The Sagamore Resort

Bolton Landing, New York

The historic Sagamore Resort stands just inside Adirondack State Park, the largest state park in the country. To the north and west extends a 6-million-acre preserve of high peaks and rolling hills laced with glacier-sculpted lakes, brawling rivers and high-country trails. Portions of this scenic north country—which covers more area than the state of Massachusetts—have changed little since Samuel de Champlain passed through in 1609.

The Sagamore occupies all of Green Island, one of 300 that speckle the 32-mile-long lake. A causeway connects it to the mainland and an area once known as Millionaires' Row for the wealthy mansions that lined the shore. The original Sagamore hotel opened in 1883 during Lake George's gilded age. Fires destroyed it and its successor, but not even the Depression could prevent a third from being built on the site in 1930. That rambling, 100-room white-clapboard landmark survives and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Oriented toward the lake, it has an apron of lawn that spills down to a private beach and a marina, where guests can check out small motorboats to explore Champlain Lake on their own or head out on charter fishing boats for lake trout and land-locked salmon. But the lure is not limited to the water. In 1928, noted designer Donald Ross personally laid out the Sagamore's scenic if hilly 18-hole golf course through the forests on the mainland and it has recently been restored using his original blueprints. Tennis players, meanwhile, have a complex of 4 clay and 1 hard courts, set in the middle of the island a few hundred yards from the hotel. There is a pro on site during the May-to-October tennis season.

Guests can also arrange horseback rides or white-water rafting trips. Lake George itself affords a variety of recreation, including waterskiing, kayaking, boating, fishing, and scuba diving and snorkeling. A former disco, with glass doors out onto a terrace above the lake, has been converted into an excellent fitness center and that in turn has been supplemented by a pampering spa. And during the summer there are supervised children's programs and Sagamore's own sailing school.
