Set in northern Vermont's Mad River Valley, Sugarbush is best known as a winter ski destination. In summer, however, the focus shifts to tennis, golf, hiking, mountain biking, Sugarbush Resortand other forms of mountain recreation. Guests can choose from a variety of one-to-
four-
bedroom condos, variously located slopeside, adjacent to the Health & Racquet Club, or elsewhere along the access road and mountain. Well-organized children's programs make it popular with families.

For tennis players the lure has long been the Health & Racquet Club, whose courts cascade through the trees a few hundred yards below the slopes. It has four Har-Tru and two hard courts outdoors and another two hard courts indoors, as well as a complete fitness center, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and an indoor rock-climbing wall. It is also the staging area for a suite of summer-long day camps for kids ages 6 to 13 as well as several special themed camps on specific dates variously focused on mountain biking, adventure, or golf. Junior tennis camps also run all summer with the option of combining tennis with golf. And beginning in May 2010, Sugarbush becomes the site for New England Tennis Camps.

Tennis Staff. Tennis director Ross Greene took over the program in March 2009 after four years as a staff pro. A former college player in Pennsylvania, he inherited an Ross Greene, Sugarbush Resort, Warren, Vermontestablished program but had set out to tweak it when I visited him. He had already added Cardio tennis once a week and two weekly beginner clinics. In keeping with the family orientation, the weekly summer calendar also offers half-day and full-day junior camps, while adults can look forward to a couple of round robins, stroke-of-the-day clinics, and private lessons. The website also lists half-day and full-day adult camps, though those tend to take place on request rather than on a weekly basis, or as Greene put it, "Putting together your own group is encouraged." By putting together your own group you can also dictate the focus of the camp. "I'm flexible," says Greene. "I'll work with the people to keep them interested." And if you need people to fill out the numbers he can often recruit them from local members and second-home owners, many of whom are avid players.
Tennis Programs. In addition to the general tennis programming provided by Greene, Sugarbush now hosts New England Tennis Holidays programs. Its founder, Kurt Grabher, will personally run these five-hour-a-day sessions, offering packages that include lodging and some meals.
Courts & Fees. There are 4 Har-Tru and 2 hard court outdoors and 2 hard courts indoors. Court fees: Free to guests and camp participants outdoors; $20/hour indoors.

Other Recreation

Golf Courses. The resort has a one 18-hole championship course open from May into October.

Sugarbush Golf Club: Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed this 18-hole course. It has a classic mountain layout, notable for its great views and for punishing errant shots. Par: 72. Length: 5,231-6,464 yards. Open May to October.

Fitness Center. Located adjacent to the tennis courts, the Health Club has both indoor and outdoor swimming pools and Jacuzzis and a complete indoor fitness center offering a climbing wall, cardio equipment, free weights, circuit training, and squash and racquetball courts. They run over 25 hours of group fitness classes per week, yoga, Tae-kwon do, and aqua aerobics among them. The indoor facilities include saunas, a co-ed steam room, personal training, massage rooms, and the tennis pro shop.

And ... Hiking trails abound, including a scenic 11.5-mile stretch of the Long Trail along the crest of the Green Mountains. The region is also laced with back roads suitable for bikers, both mountain and road. There's also a zipline.

Children's Programs

From late June to late August, the resort runs a Summer Adventure Camps for kids ages 4-13 designed to keep them busy swimming, playing tennis and golf, hiking, learning about nature, and doing arts and crafts from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Lodging

Accommodations at Sugarbush comprise a variety of condo complexes, with units ranging in size from one to four bedrooms. The newest of these is the Clay Brook at Sugarbush at the new Lincoln Peak Villages at the base of the mountain. Its units range from studios to five-bedroom suites, all with full kitchens. The Sugarbush Inn, where I've frequently stayed, was closed for the summer when I visited in 2009. Finally, though not part of the resort, there is also the elegant Pitcher Inn, part of the Relais & Châteaux group, in Warren Village.

Restaurants

In summer, there are some half dozen choices, beginning with Timbers in the new Clay Brook. There are other choices along the access road or on into the nearby town of Warren itself.
