From almost everywhere within the 3,500 acres of Sunriver Resort Sunriver and Mt. Bacheloryou can see the snow-capped volcanic cone of Mt. Bachelor and other peaks of Oregon's Cascade Range. Located 15 miles south of Bend, this low-key, very outdoors oriented resort/residential community comprises a vast array of recreation for the whole family, from golf and tennis to horseback riding, canoeing, whitewater rafting, hiking, and fly fishing. Some 30 miles of bike trails lace the property, stitching together the various recreational venues—among them more than 30 tennis courts—with a lodge, condos, houses, spa, and even its own airstrip.

Tennis Features

Broadly speaking, Sunriver has two independent tennis operations: the 26 hard courts at Tennis Hill, which are under the aegis of the Sunriver Resort Owners Association (SROA) and the seven courts at Sage Springs Club and Spa (adjacent to the Sunriver Lodge), which are under the Sunriver Resort. If that seems confusing, it's because it is.

Tennis Hill. Although celebrating its 38th year of operation, Steve Vaughan's Wild West Tennis is new to Sunriver. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, he and his staff of USPTA- and USPTR-certified pros offer private lessons, daily clinics and drill sessions, specialty clinics, tournaments, and player matching services on the 26 hard courts at Tennis Hill. He also offers weekend camps on selected weekends. Phone: 541-593-5707. Court fees: None with an owner access card.
Sage Springs Club and Spa. This complex consists of four outdoor courts (accessible to those staying anywhere within the resort) and three indoor courts, whose use is restricted to those who rent through Sunriver Resort. Eric Nokes oversees this program, which runs year-round and offers a variety of adult and junior clinics, lessons, and social events. Phone: 541-593-3714. Court fees: $10/hour outdoors.

Your Call

Here's what others have had to say about Sunriver Resort, Sage Springs Club & Spa, and

  • 4½-Ball Rating "I have been going to Sunriver for the last couple of years and was disappointed when I heard that Reed Anderson was no longer going to be running the Tennis Program at Tennis Hill. I went down this year not really wanting to like the new program but found that to be impossible. I have to say that the four days of lessons with Steve were the best and have changed my game more than anyone has ever before. He was able to make small changes to both my forehand and backhand so that now I feel that I can hit hard and get the ball to drop in the court. I also feel that I have plenty of time to prepare for each shot and can ensure that I have good footwork to go with good strokes.
spaceSteven is great at working with people of varying levels in the same class. I have found out recently when I attended a different tennis camp that this is not a skill all coaches have developed. The first day my husband and I were in the 1st session in the morning with three beginners. Steven was able to run drills and vary how he was feeding the ball so that we all were challenged.
spaceSteve uses the ball machine during lessons so that he can be on the same side of the net as you when you are hitting. Because of this I think he saw things that I was doing that caused unnecessary movement in my ground strokes.
spaceSteve has all sorts of fun "toys" (e.g. training aids) to help you with your game. Everything from a radar gun to a thing to make you bend your knees or another thing to help you with your volleys. It was cool to see how "fast" my serve was!
spaceMy husband and I are already planning our trip to Palm Springs for one of Steve's camps during the Pacific Life Open. I would highly recommend Steve's tennis camps!"

  • 3½-Ball Rating "good skills training, relaxed program with emphasis on drills followed by round robin play. It could be grouped by skill level."—G.S., Int., August 2008
  • 3½-Ball Rating "This is a great camp - fun and informative and my game always improves. Steve hires several excellent pros to assist him and changes the lessons according to the level of the group. He is very good about incorporating all levels into games so that everyone feels comfortably challenged. Pros are also willing to stay and help with individual tips and sometimes play along side you to help, too. I look forward to this camp every year!"—G.A., Int., August 2008
  • 4-Ball Rating "courts maintained beautifully, not even pine needles were seen on the court. look forward to a return visit next year"—E.B., Adv. Int., July 2008
  • 4½-Ball Rating "Good family site for all sports. Tennis camps with Steve Vaughan are worth spending time in Sun River. Good freinds, beautiful scenery, and memories to be made!"—T.E., Adv., July 2008
  • 4-Ball Rating "Always a great time. Great instruction, drills, game situations and balls boys/girls. Fun people in a teriffic setting."—K.B., Adv. Int., July 2008
  • 4-Ball Rating "Great drills and lot of attaction to help you with your game. Location is great (Central Oregon)court are like new. You'll make lots of new best freinds.       "—H.A., Adv. Int., July 2008
