  • 5-Ball Rating "THE BEST TENNIS EXPERIENCE EVER!!!"—B.T., Adv., April 2024
  • 5-Ball Rating "The John Newcombe Tennis Ranch is the best! Been coming for several years with a group of my ladies. The tennis, the pros, everything I’ve experienced at NEWKS are top notch. You feel like you’re part of the family. Can’t wait to come back!!!"—C.G., Low Int., April 2024
  • 4-Ball Rating "Great Pros, Great Staff, Fantastic price! Loved covered courts as a backup if it rained or if to windy to play outdoors. The food was pretty good. Clean rooms. Have re-booked over and over. We go 2 times a year. (we may start going 3 times a year!)"—S.B., Low Int., July 2023
  • 4½-Ball Rating "Think "better than average sleepaway camp." The place is not posh, but the Adult Weekend Getaway is comfortable, easy and fun. Since my first visit as a self-described intermediate beginner looking for confidence to bridge from private lessons to match play, I go solo once or twice a year. The group has numbered from 12 one weekend to 40 for another, including a ladies' league group of 10 that flew in from Colorado, with ages ranging from late 20s to 3 or 4 retirees; the camp staffs as many pros as needed to keep a low ratio. Every single pro I've met there has been really knowledgeable and friendly. To restate the obvious, the getaway is about tennis. You play all day, indoors or out, rain or shine. I would not recommend this place for absolute beginners or the non-player who just wants to tag along. The program is packed and doesn't lend itself to halfway participation. Accommodations range from 2-bunk cabins to hotellike rooms with balconies and even townhouse-looking units I saw only from outside. Lodgings are clean and comfy but spartan, a great place to stow your stuff, lay your head and relax under a hot shower, but you won't be tempted to lie in all day. The food is best described as hearty and moderately healthy camp fare served buffet-style. You won't see aspic (or chicken nuggets, for that matter), but the enchiladas or the turkey sandwich you build after 3 hrs on the courts will taste scrumdillyumptious. The last night is FUN. I have fond, if slightly sodden, memories of impromptu midnight tennis after an evening of chatting and dancing. I'm ready to go back this fall."—P.G., Int., July 2023
  • 4-Ball Rating "Tennis fantasy is an rare & exceptional experience. you are one of 60 to 100 campers. you will be coached and taught by 12 to 16 Pros who have won Grand Slams. They are legends of the game, (namely John Newcomb, Roy Emerson, Rod Laver, Mark Whitford, The Jensen brothers etc.. They put you into one of 4 teams, then they coach you, on court, while you are playing matches. for 3 to 4 days. There are 2 days of drills and basically one on one coaching. You eat with them, drink with them and have a lot of fun. You socialize with your fellow campers and the Legend Pros. Food is good and plentiful, beer is unlimited, so is the wine at dinner. I've been there 9 times. Some campers have gone back every year. 1 week in the fall for guys level 3.5 & up. 1 week for mixed in the spring."—R.W., Adv. Int., May 2023
  • 5-Ball Rating "Always Looking forward to another wonderful fun tennis experience. Meeting new tennis, people, meeting our friends there and most,of all the pros."—P.B., Int., January 2023
  • 5-Ball Rating "Thinking about a tennis vacation. Then think no more because there is really only one place to go. The John Newcombe Tennis Ranch. The wife and I have been going for years, and we can both honestly say that we NEVER had a bad time. Deep in the heart of the beautiful Texas hill country, the setting is beautiful as are the grounds;big shout out to those who keep it looking that way. Accommodations are just what you need. Hey folks, this is a ranch and not one of those overpriced resorts. Shout out to housekeeping for keeping the rooms clean. Food is terrific and very nourishing. Shout out to the kitchen staff. Oh yes,the tennis. Let's just say whether you are a serious tournament player,or a beginner or somewhere in between, then Newks is the place for you. Whatever YOU desire, the fantastic pros will do their very best to make it happen. It's really YOUR ranch from the time you check in until you check out. You want clay courts, they've got clay courts. You want covered courts, they've got those as well. You want individual attention in order to refine a specific stroke, they will work with you to help achieve YOUR goals. The drills are designed around the game based approach philosophy in that each is simulating actual match play. These drills not only allow you to work on technique, but they also test your fitness as well. Trust me,you will improve, but most importantly, you will have more fun than you thought possible both on and off the court. Adrian,Nick,Adam and all of the pros are there for one thing, and that is to make sure you have the time of your life. Trust me,you will. There is one problem however: the time goes by way too quickly but by the end of your stay, you will say:I'll Be Back!!!!!!! I can just about guarantee that you will be back....again and again and again... It's an addiction, but a good one to have. Overall assessment: BEST IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!"—M.M., Adv., June 2022

  • 5-Ball Rating "The John Newcombe Tennis Ranch (Newks), has changed my life, I want to spend every day in New Braunfels, TX on the ranch. There’s no place on earth with a more positive and revitalizing energy. Everywhere you look, whether it be at the staff or the customers, there’s always a smiling face. 10/10 would recommend to any tennis lovers of all levels to choose Newks next time you want to live out your tennis fantasy."—Z.C., Adv., June 2022

  • 4½-Ball Rating "John Newcombe Tennis Ranch is by far one of the best tennis resorts for groups looking to have fun and practice their skills/technique at a very affordable rate! I’m from Chicago and have been going to their weekend Adult tennis camp for the past 5 years. It’s so popular with my Chicago tennis teams/friends that I’m bringing 20 people this year! Location: it’s less than an hour from Austin and San Antonio airports so it’s really convenient. We love to hang out in Austin after the weekend camp is over. Value: accommodations, meals and 6 hours of tennis are all included in one weekend package. I’ve been to a few tennis camps around the country and Newks is far by the least expensive without compromising on a great tennis experience. Staff: if you want to have a fun tennis getaway, the pros at Newks definitely deliver! The camp director Adrian and his staff always bring the energy, friendliness, fun and great tips. They keep you moving with dynamic drills, music and coaching. Accommodations: this is a tennis ranch, so it’s more rustic and less of a 5 star resort. But that’s why my group loves it. It’s all about tennis. There’s a pool and hot tub, but we really enjoy the 2 bedroom/2 bath condos that sit right off the clay and hard courts. And all the accommodations are close to the main hall. Entertainment: other than the tennis, the nightly entertainment by the staff is one of the reasons we visit Newks every year! The pros stay on the ranch and join the campers for Aussie style games, karaoke and camp fires. We really enjoy the fun and friendly atmosphere and the camaraderie amongst the staff and patrons. If you’re looking for a fun, affordable, memorable tennis getaway with a group, couples or even by yourself, than John Newcombe Tennis Ranch is the way to go!"—B.A., Adv. Int., May 2022
  • 4½-Ball Rating "This is our favorite place to go and play tennis and enjoy life. We loved it so much we got married there during the lockdown! It holds a very special place in our hearts. The food is wonderful and we always meet the nicest people. Tennis drills keep you moving the whole time and we always learn something new. Adrian does a fantastic job on the adult side and Fossil Phil is incredible with the kids. We will continue to go back year after year."—D.S., Adv., May 2022

  • 4½-Ball Rating "Just returned from a weeklong camp at John Newcombe Tennis Ranch. I have been to many well run tennis camps, but this one was by far my favorite. Intense tennis training in a fun environment with other tennis enthusiasts. The pros were terrific and I left with not only improved skills, but practical ways to make continued improvement at home. I found that many of the other campers are repeat visitors (some as many as 7+ times) and I can see why. If you are looking for a camp whose focus is on improving all elements of your game, this is it. Camp is ideal for single travelers given the fun and welcoming atmosphere. Shoutout to Adrian who runs a great program. Can't wait to go back in 2022!"—L.P., Adv. Int., November 2021
  • 5-Ball Rating "If you haven't been to the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch for a weekend getaway or for a fantasy camp recently, you're missing out. The program has been markedly upgraded in the past 2 to 3 years and is a can't miss week or weekend. As someone who has been going at least 2 x year for the last 20 years, I am appreciative of the changes in the last 2 or so years. Adrian and Mitch are two of the most fun people around yet incredibly profession. The energy is fantastic and the exception tennis instruction is only exceeded by the after hours social life."—M.F., Adv., November 2020
  • 4½-Ball Rating "I loved it. They worked me hard and instructors were absolutely great, so much energy and enthusiasm. Food was incredible, Ranch was kept spotless. Living quarters were extremely comfortable and clean. We had a problem with our room and, with no hesitation, they accommodated us and changed our room! Six of us went to the Ranch and all 6 of us want to go back again."—R.R., Adv., November 2019
  • 5-Ball Rating "Tennis. This is what Newks is. Truly... Newks is one of the few places I can come to and feel both on vacation and at home. People say this place doesn’t change, I disagree, it only gets better each time I come. This year I came with my nephews and had them join the junior camp while I plaid in the adult camp with Adrian and Gregor... they haven’t stopped asking me when they can come back. Truly a dream for an uncle to hear, Phil, Mitch, Mariel and Esther run a truly world class junior tennis camp experience. We’ll be back, just have to wait a couple more months! Find the time to give your tennis game the best gift you can give it, get yourself to Newks!"—C.K., Adv., April 2019

  • 5-Ball Rating "John Newcombe Tennis Ranch is AWESOME!! Our son as gone to their Summer and Winter Youth Camps for several years, and each time he has had an amazing time and improved his game. The campus is BEAUTIFUL, the courts are excellent and plentiful, and the coaches are top notch! You won't find a better value, better coaching, more beautiful setting or more fun experience anywhere! Their High School Winter Weekend Camps are terrific as well! We highly recommend!"—M.B., Adv. Int., April 2019
  • 4½-Ball Rating "I had an exceptional week at the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch! It met all my expectations and then some! The coaches were all professional and personable. Adrian, Gregory #legend, Price, Hunter, Juan and Chris are top notch instructors and gave us great direction with every lesson. My game improved! I was not able to volley, lob, and serve return confidently until they were covered by the team of coaches. This def is more valuable than private lesson imo because you are more invested in the development of your tennis game while being in the ranch, living and breathing tennis for a week. The coaches all have great personalities and always made us feel welcomed. My group and I, again, had an amazing time and I couldn't of asked for a better time out! Money, travel, and time well spent! I came out of this camp a better tennis player for sure! I also started listening to more country music which is a great thing!"—C.A., Int., April 2019
  • 5-Ball Rating "Just finished a girls trip to John Newcombe's Tennis Ranch and had a BLAST!!! This was my first tennis camp experience, but have to say it will definitely be hard to beat. Three of us stayed on the ranch for their full week program and couldn't have asked for a better vacation. Here are my thoughts about the trip: Tennis - We opted in for the full week of tennis (full of 3 hour mornings and 2.5 hour afternoons -- WOW)! Before coming to the ranch, wasn't sure I'd survive! For reference: We are used to hitting 2-3 hours at a time, 2-3 times per week at home. Let me tell you, the tennis pros did an amazing job tailoring to our skill set. Not only was the pace perfect, but we each came back better players and with fitter bodies ;) Insider Hint: We brought in a massage therapist three evenings of the week for 1-hour deep-tissue massages (YES -- talk about fair-weather tennis players!!) However, this was KEY to playing 100% the next day and learning/making the most out of our time there. Pros - Adrian, Hunter, Price & Gregor Honestly: the nicest/coolest guys work at the ranch!! Not only are they REALLY good tennis players that know how to clearly articulate their coaching tips, they're also extremely hospitable, friendly and HILARIOUS!! (+bonus: they're all AMAZING dancers) -- the evenings are full of nothing but laughs & good times!! Every day, the pros rotate with the multiple adult groups at the camp. I found this to be really beneficial -- getting new perspectives on different techniques. One way or another, one of their suggestions/tips would stick with my playing style. The Ranch & Food - The Ranch is a BEAUTIFUL gem just outside of San Antonio. The tennis courts are cleanly kept and even though the majority of courts are outdoors (both clay and concrete), they have a fair number of indoor courts for rainy weather -- so you won't miss out on a single day of tennis! The food at the ranch was REALLY good as well. Three meals a day - buffet style - with MORE than enough options to leave full and powered up for your next lesson. Only miss: found that the bar would close a little early some nights. Although there were a few liquor stores nearby, we didn't have a mini-fridge to keep our drinks cool...didn't stop us from having a great time though! Accommodations - The three of us stayed in a room with two queen beds and one bathroom. More than enough room! The beds were comfy, bathroom had good space, but honestly we didn't need to spend much time there since the staff kept us busy during the days & exhausted in the evenings that we went straight to sleep! Down-side: Unfortunately, by the time we booked our trip, all the rooms with in-suite laundry were taken. This would have been KEY with all the dirty tennis outfits...not that we ran out of clothes, but the dirty laundry would make the room smell if it wasn't air-packed away! Other Notes - As I mentioned, I went with two others to the ranch and we had an amazing time! I would definitely recommend going with friends around the same level -- they do a great job of keeping you all together on top of introducing you to others and meeting new people. Would I Go Back? 100% YES To all the staff at John Newcombe's: Thank you for an AMAZING vacation week at the ranch. Couldn't have asked for a better time - you all exceeded our expectations (which were high to begin with lol) and we can't wait to see you again soon!!"—J.T., Adv. Int., April 2019

  • 2-Ball Rating "My husband I bought a weekend package from a silent Auction. We go on at least 3 tennis vacations a year and I don't want to be negative, but so far this was our least favourite. We were very disappointed in the tennis instruction. We spent quite a few hours on court, but it was in groups with too many people and every 20 minutes you switched to another court with a different coach. You were just fed balls. It's fine for people who just want to hit some tennis balls and socialize, but don't go there to work on anything. The lodging was not that great either. Sorry."—D.V., Adv., April 2019
  • 5-Ball Rating "I've been to The Ranch on several occasions now since 2018. It's an easy drive from Houston (or many other areas in Texas for that matter). While the hill country setting is incredibly calm and beautiful, the hard work you put on the courts with the pros is the most rewarding piece of the vacation. The pros are not only supportive, encouraging, informative, and very good at what they do, they're also very easy to talk to and understand while your get some of the most consistent and repetitive practice you may ever experience. It's hard work and it's not to be taken lightly, and it's so worth it."—D.A., Low Int., April 2019
  • 4½-Ball Rating "I look forward to visiting The Ranch every year! I’ve been going to the Ranch for nearly 10 years and every time I end my week having learned something new. 30 hours on the courts over 5 days certainly helps me groove my strokes. The pros are great and although the instruction is in groups, they are always willing to work with you. Tell them your goals for the week and they will focus on that for you throughout the week. The more you interact with them, the more you will get. This is THE best bang for your buck that you can get anywhere."—B.D., Adv., April 2019

Every instructor has an Amazing skill to impart the knowledge you need to continue your game after the instruction i have attended Newks weekend programs for almost 20 years at least once a year. I always learn a new technique or idea to improve my game. I also bring organize a group of ladies to attend the weekend camp once a year. The talented pros learn everyone’s name, talents and always an interesting tidbit about each individual lady and make each of us feel so empoweried. I have attended lots of tennis programs and camps, but Newks is consistently a top program!"—J.G., Adv. Int., April 2019

The staff exhibit incredible teamwork which translates into a tremendous all-around experience on and off court. The instruction from Adrian, Greg, Ryan, et al was superb and, as a bonus, they made me laugh all day long. Even though I should have been exhausted after 7 hours on court that Saturday, the Newk's staff's enthusiasm powered me through! Highly recommended for anyone!"—R.L., Adv. Int., April 2019

  • 5-Ball Rating "Last fall my family and I wanted to get away for some fun in the Hill Country. I chose John Newcombe tennis Ranch because I've been there before and it's always been a great time. The Scenic Hills and trees and beautiful countryside always make it feel peaceful and scenic with plenty to do in the area. We always have a great time whether we staying at the ranch or go out for a bit of fun in green or other areas close by. The tennis instruction and the tennis activities are unmatched to any other place I've been. The Pro Shop is always well stocked with creative fun things to buy. I've never had my kids participate in the kids programs but knowing how well they've done over the years and watching them through their exercises and practice you can tell it is a top-notch program. Everyone you meet there whether it's staff or other guests are always friendly and sociable. We've never had a bad trip or bad experience. The rooms are great and the food is delicious. And when the kids are out having a good time it's a great place for the parents to sit back and have a little bit of a romantic evening. I can't wait to go back again soon. A few years ago we had a couple go with us and it was just us for adults and that was a great time too because we got to hang out more at the bar and go out on the town. I also know that if you're lucky sometimes you can even see John Newcombe or other famous players around the ranch. Lots of historic photos and lots of stories that the staff and owners can tell. It's a fantastic time."—A.H., Int., April 2019

I have made friends there over the years who I still keep up with. The atmosphere there is strongly encouraging. The pros are able to create successful and beneficial matches for each player, giving you a variety of opponents with a different playing style. Aside from tennis, the ranch offers a variety of recreational activities that are very entertaining. The food is good as well! • 5-Ball Rating "I grew up going to the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch and eventually joined the ranks of staunch tennis camp fanatic turned camp counselor turned academy pro. While most would say I'm easily entertained, I've never been nearly as easily impressed, but Newk's impressive with very little effort apart from honest intention to bring people of all ages and skill levels together to share in the camaraderie of sport and kinship. Little did I know that first summer of '99 Newk's would prove the single most magical and remarkably communal diversion from the monotony of being a teenager and fuel my love for tennis and fitness for decades to come. Apart from necessary expansion and a handful of luxurious upgrades to accommodate increasing popularity, the Ranch has changed very little about the way it conducts business and is still headed up by a swarm of incredibly sharp and sidesplittingly hilarious Aussie tennis elites. If you're reading this, please take these words for truth: the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch is the most dynamic, engaging, unassuming, heart-expanding, team building, non-judgmental tennis getaway on the planet bar none."—D.N., Adv., April 2018
  • 3½-Ball Rating "Lots of drills but very little individual instruction. Many of the 'Pros' are 18 year high school students. Too much tennis in a short amount of time. 8 hours of drills in one day is too much for an adult body. Then another four hours the next morning. Some of us had more. Several of us came home with injuries."—M.B., Int., April 2018

  • 3-Ball Rating "Strengths are the great people that show up for the tennis. Good players and fun folks - lots of fun tennis and camaraderie. The clinics were not always the promised 4:1 ratio so less hitting and more waiting than optimal at times. Chris, the main pro, is a great personality and tried to keep the energy up. I did get a few useful pointers from the pros and we still hit a lot of balls. Rain on Saturday night meant playing on soggy clay courts on Sunday which was not so great, but don't know what the covered courts would have been like. I went for the 3 days of tennis - Friday through Sunday. The Friday evening clinic is barely an hour, and Sunday ends up being less than 2 hours of tennis rather than 3, loosing 30 minutes to "chalk talk" at the start and 30 minutes after for "awards". So what looks like 1 full and 2 half days of tennis is closer to 1 full plus less than a half. For those of us with time off at a premium, it would be better to start earlier on Friday or go later on Sunday and call it 2 days. Still a great value for the price, with all meals and accommodations and lessons included. The food was great and just right for a tennis camp - plentiful and tasty but still reasonably healthy with lean meats and good options for veggies and always a big salad at lunch and dinner...and always a nice dessert. Best to go with a buddy or group of friends for the party atmosphere. The place generally seems a little tired and in need of some TLC and sprucing up around the grounds and so forth. The room was pleasant and comfortably furnished. One serious deficiency - no ice machine or readily available ice for water, for sore joints, etc., you have to ask for ice from the kitchen or bartender or front desk attendant...unless you get clever and start hoarding it from the ice set out for drinks during meals. No surprise then that there's no ice bucket in the room!"—C.R., Int., April 2018

They are skilled and passionate about teaching and can zoom in and identify problem areas in each individuals strokes. A weekend at the ranch will for sure bring your game to the next level! • 5-Ball Rating "John Newcombe Tennis Ranch, a place where I found my passion in tennis. This place is full of big personalities with a lot of heart for the game. I trained in the academy for 6 years. Within my first year, I went from a beginner level who had never played a tournament before to being a top ranked player in the state and playing in national tournaments. I can attest to the quality of the training and instruction, with the emphasis on the "this ain't no country club" mentality. Fossil Phil is the heart and soul of this ranch and there is no other man who loves the sport more and who can motivate you to dream big, strive for greatness and push the limits. All the coaches make the atmosphere fun while providing top level instruction. I will always share a special bond with the fellow students and staff I made through the academy. The academy fosters a community centered around the sport and the willingness to work together, train hard and achieve goals. "Team, Family, Team" was a motto coined during my years and it rings true to this day. I made lifelong friendships that span the globe. Thank you, John Newcombe Tennis Ranch for the tennis, the discipline, the work ethic, the friendships and the memories."—A.T.,  April 2018

  • 5-Ball Rating "I spent many years of my youth going to Newks. I started off at the camp where they would place people in different groups according to their experience level and they made each group so much fun! All of the staff was incredible and so easy to get along with and they really helped improve my game. Each day when practice was done, there were different activities people could participate in such as soccer and things alike and it was really easy to make friends in these friendly competitions. The amentites of the camp were really nice as well because you lived with groups of people and always had the best time. After spending many summers at the camp, I decided to go a step further and join the summer academy which was a bit more intense but super beneficial for my game. The academy focused more on tennis but there was still free time in the evenings and on the weekends. The times I spent at Newks were some of the best of my life and I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone."—L.F., Adv. Int., April 2018

They do a wonderful job accommodating the program to what you would like to work on in addition to running a variety of drills. They also try to give you a social experience. I would say that some of the “younger” pro’s at times are a little more interested in placing/putting the ball away rather giving you the chance to hit another ball. This is not the entire group. This is a place for fine instruction and many hours on the court. You can’t beat the value, and I’ve been to other resorts."—M.K., Adv. Int., April 2018

The Pro's are fantastic and they work so hard to make sure you get the most from their program. The lead pro Chris is especially hard working and so fun! The only weakness I would mention is the rooms. In the two bedroom condos there is one really nice big room and then one tiny one yet the charge for both is the same. On the positive side of the accommodations, the food was great. I would definitely go again."—J.H., Int., April 2018

The accommodations were very nice, simple but very functional and neat, and clean. Bathrooms were comfortable and stylish. Chris Jacques is a very funny, larger than life type character, who kept us laughing but also was always working to make us better tennis players. He made the trip especially fun and memorable with his antics and dry one liners "nice facial expressions Steve!" or "Let's show some enthusiasm Sam!" The resort is tucked away in beautiful TX country and is a relaxing get away where you can be as serious or fun as ya want. The staff is hilarious while also informative. • 5-Ball Rating "If you want to think of a tennis camp of a life time memory. This is theeeee camp! I went to Newks in '91 as a junior. I am back now in 2018. It is like seeing your long lost love again. What has been consistent and stay consistent? The love and friendliness here. Scott Jacques has made all this possible. Scott has a big heart and he will make sure everyone is well taken care of with passion and love. Even a beginner will turn into a believer after this trip. I can guarantee that. I have heard two testimonies already while leaving the camp. They both said they want to play more tennis. The grace of this camp can be felt everywhere! How can we not win after this camp?! This camp preaches grace. And grace always wins. Bring this to your tennis game and you will see instant results. They made us feel special in our own way?! Isn't that what tennis is all about? It will change your tennis game, your life. There's a reason why this is the second best tennis academy resort in the world. You will gain a lot of knowledge without any pressure or even knowing it. It is that cool! I am talking world class training without even acknowledging it. That is consistency... Talk about staying modest and humble. This is it!"—A.C., Pro, April 2018

  • 4½-Ball Rating "Just returned from a week at the Tennis Ranch. It was an exceptional week of excellent instruction. Strengths: individual attention, high quality feedback, consistent positivity. I also greatly enjoyed watching the Academy Students who were inspiring in both their abilities but also in their total acceptance of a bunch of 3.5 to 4.0 over 50's watching their drills. Food was delicious and plentiful. Chris, Weston, Hunter and Eric all were dedicated to the task at hand of improving the play of a foursome of very average players. I went with my 78 year old dad who has never really taken a lesson and he had a great time. I definitely will return. I also enjoyed side adventures to New Braunfels and Austin. All other camps were super expensive, this one is super reasonable and extremely worth the money."—A.R., Adv. Int., December 2017
  • 4-Ball Rating "Strengths - Instructors were very willing to customize, esp. if you told them exactly what you needed to work on - Chris, Hunter, and Tyler were fantastic and always eager to help with specific actionable tips - Very positive social atmosphere with regular shared meals - Nice hearty breakfast buffet - Great value for the dollar - If you are a strong player, pros will often be matched up to play with you (at least for me) Weaknesses - Some instructors were basically robotic feeders and didn't really offer any advice - A bit too much match play for me (probably 20% of time) as I wanted more drills to focus on skill development - Too many of the drills and games (and even doubles play) intermixed very disparate levels (e.g. 3.0 and 4.5 probably should not play doubles together) - Limited food variety at lunch and dinner can get tedious - My children also did the youth tennis program, but none of them could tell me any specific advice they got (hard to say how much to believe this though) Overall This is a great place for the dollar and I'd highly recommend it. I also went to Saddlebrook this year. I'd say that while I got more in terms of tennis development from Newks, my child got more out of Saddlebrook. Of course, Saddlebrook has a much posher facility, but it also costs much, much more."—J.R., Adv., November 2017
  • 4-Ball Rating "I have been going to Newks for 25 years now, or thereabouts, because I have lost count. I just keep coming back, usually during mid October for the weekend right before the Legends Week. It is a busy weekend but feels like an old friends' homecoming trip because of the great friends I have made at the Ranch for well over two decades. I love this place so let me just be clear about that from the get go. Anyways, strengths. The emphasis is on fun here and that is the primary reason why I keep returning. Sure, you can drill til you drop in the daily clinics and drills, particularly if the Texas heat is upon you. You can also find good doubles and singles match ups if your body can withstand all the tennis. Chris Jacques remains in charge of adult tennis at the Ranch and he has become a dear friend as well as a great pro. Chris's style is Aussie laid back and that continues to work for me. His cadre of teaching pros, which gets replenished somewhat each year, continues to be strong. This is not a camp intended for those who want a lot of individual attention and lessons. It is really much more of a group phenomenon. That said, any guest can arrange for private lessons if they so choose, you just gotta find the time to do it and of course, private lessons are not part of the affordable camp fee. The condos are not 5 star and there always seems to be something idiosyncratic about them, but they are comfortable and close to the courts. Great places to hang out with your mates. But if you are looking for 5 star accommodations, this ain't your place. It remains rustic with no illusions of being a Michelin property or resort. As for the food, the food on the Ranch is served buffet style and while it is not gourmet by any means, hey, it does the trick. If you want to explore local cuisine, you can always make excursions in to New Braunfels for BBQ and other good food, and the 45 minute trek to Austin puts you in culinary heaven. As for weaknesses? My pet peeve has always been the hot tub. They only have one and it is relatively small. While they replaced the old tub a few years ago, the new tub in my view is only somewhat better. Wish they would invest the $s in a bigger tub so that more of us could enjoy it over the long weekend. Another weakness in my view is the older har-tru courts. While these have underground hydration, these green clay courts suffer from inconsistent hydration and are not on par with other tennis locations that have good har-tru courts. Would be awesome if Newk and company would be able to put out some $s to upgrade these courts for those of us who really need the softer surface. The hard courts, by the way, were in rock solid shape overall on my last visit. One other very minor critique. For years, one of the things I looked forward to with each visit to Newks was getting my Newks Ranch T-shirt which used to be given to each guest. This year, the Ranch no longer provided the free T-shirt. I don't really know why this was but what I can say is that some of the 1st timers that I brought with me to the Ranch this past October were disappointed in not receiving their T shirt. They wanted to wear it proudly upon returning home and my feeling is the shirt really does help promote the Ranch. Oh well. Otherwise, let me finish by saying that I have encouraged many many friends to visit the Ranch over the years, and many have and many continue to do so. And, those of us who do return again and again do so for three primary reasons. One, it is all about the fun. Two, we have made incredible friends. And last but not least, Newks is truly a great tennis camp. I will be back in October 2018!"—G.S., Adv., November 2017

The second time I went there was for the Halloween weekend with a bigger party of 15. We joined anther 36 players for a great group of 51. The visit was incredible. The staff was able to give the same level of attention and assistance to the large group as the small. Once again, my game improved. During the Halloween weekend we attending the Halloween party. There was a small group (14) people during the week I was there and I really got know everyone and play with everyone multiple times. The only thing that I was confused by was on the friday morning session (our last session). The night before, the weekend group arrived. There about 20 or so people. I didn't realize that they would be joining our friday morning session. It completely changed the dynamic of the camp for the group that I was in. The drills were different, there were quite a few different pros that I didn't know and that didn't know me, and a lot of new tennis players. I did not enjoy this session. It was difficult to play with that many new people and I felt like I was not able to continue working on what I had been working on all week, because the new pros did not know what I had been working on and the drills were different to accommodate the large group of incoming players. It would have been helpful to know this ahead of time and/ or to keep the groups separate for their last session."—K.H., Int., April 2017

I guess that is why my wife and I have been there 10 times in the last four years. We have done the weekend clinic eight times and the weeklong clinic twice. You will get more tennis then the body can handle and an overload of useful and specific info tailored to your game. To me the best thing they do is to keep it to a 4 to 1 ratio, 4 guest per pro. No standing around here, you will work your butt off while getting lots of constructive instruction and have a great time while you are doing it. The ROI (return on investment) is fantastic. Our 10 hours of instruction at the weekend clinic cost about 70% of what 10 hours of lessons would cost at my local tennis facility. Not to mention that the price also includes the accommodations and 10 great meals. The staff is HIGHLY trained and very personable. I am a Coach Education Tutor and Tennis Director in the UK and we have been taking players there from our programme based in Liverpoolfor over 20 years and I have to say the experience is life changing! There's an unbelievably friendly atmosphere there - you are always made to feel part of a Tennis Family, whether it's on the Junior Camps, Academy or Adult Programme. Everyone goes away feeling they've done well and counting the days untill the next visit! Great coaching team led by Phil Hendrie on the Academy and Chris Jacques on the Adult Programmes - both totally motivational and committed to ensuring each and every player is valued. Our players always feel they can let go on court and work like they've never done before! The coaching is active, high intensity and above all, total fun! FANTASTIC camp, FABULOUS pros and staff - It was the best money I have spent in a long long time. I learned so much from the pro's - they were all so knowledgeable, friendly and FUN - what an awesome experience I will be coming back over and over and bringing and telling everyone I know. Thank you for an incredible experience. The accommodations were perfect I loved being right on the courts - the food was so good and the service great. I really can only think of one thing that would of improved it would of been if I could of stayed longer --- Great time and Great memories made. Thanks again for one of the best times i have had in some time."—M.G., Int., February 2017
  • 4½-Ball Rating "The John Newcombe Tennis Ranch is an excellent tennis camp. We were two tennis leagues vsiting from the Houston area and we all felt that we came away with new skills and an even greater love for the game. The pros kept us busy on the court with very few breaks. We enjoyed the way the camp is set up where you basically work on your own skills so you are not evaluated and put into specific groups which can cause hurt feelings and resentment. The pros made it a lot of fun while at the same time constantly letting you know what you did well but also correcting your grib, your swing etc. - the reason you were there! The food was delicious. I cannot think of any weaknesses - perhaps a few more lit sign to make it easier to find your way around the camp at night!"—S.A., Low Int., January 2017

They do a wonderful job of balancing great instruction with accommodating their guests and making it a wonderful vacation. We take our children who do the kids camp, and it is amazing as well. They mean it when they say " team, family, team"! We return from Aladka year after year because it never fails to be a wonderful experience. I would not hesitate to recommend this resort to anyone."—C.H., Int., December 2016

One hour hitting session with pro on day of arrival was great way to unwind and eval by staff. Pro to student ratio was 2 or 3 to one, better than the stated 4:1. Pros were very attentive, gave valuable feedback and available as needed and at ate meals with guests. A week-long program of 4 1/2 days resulted in23 hours of tennis, a very good value. Played on well maintained clay entire time per group choice. And-the hitting and the pros were all fun."—R.W., Low Int., September 2016

Country location with deer coming right up to you, yet not too far from I-35 and minutes from San Antonio or Austin if flying in. Not only is the tennis instruction great, but the pros are hilarious entertainers as well, and go out of their way to make sure you get whatever you want, inviting requests. Pros even entertain at Sat night Karaoke and dancing, so have something for everyone. Home cooking type food is great too."—D.G., Int., May 2016

  • 5-Ball Rating "The Legends event at Newcombe's Tennis Ranch continues to be the best tennis event I have ever been to. Steve Contardi does an outstanding job organizing the event. John Newcombe and the Legends really reach out and make this event like no other. The campers are divided into 4 teams each captained by a group of legends and assisted by ranch pros. I have been a Dunnie for all but one of the years I have been attending. As such, I have had Fred Stolle, Dick Stockton, Mark Woodforde most of that time. While they enjoy annoying me, teaching me, coaching me, mostly they have become my friends. I say this with great humility. One of the great treats of the Legends is dinner. In my case usually accompanied by Fiery Fred and other campers. At the end of the meal, Newk will call up a panel, to discuss an issue about past or present tennis. Insights are provided that would most likely be available to most any tennis player. The event has remained pretty much the same every year. There will be special years like the 25 anniversary or the year Rod Laver was a legend, but every year is special, I assure you. I should note that the Ranch has upgraded the rooms substantially over the past two years, making the the experience much more comfortable. The Ranch staff are very friendly and really take care of you. Highly recommended even though the price at 4k+ might seem high. You will never experience anything like this."—T.H., Adv. He is working extremely hard to secure a college scholarship playing tennis. He enjoyed his time at Newcombe's greatly. He went back to train during his Christmas vacation so my wife and decided to stay on the ranch as well. The staff there was very professional, accommodating and pleasant to deal with. The condo was peaceful and relaxing. We enjoyed our time there as much as our son did. We will most definitely be returning to Newcombe's for tennis and vacation. The ranch is secluded enough to peaceful but close enough to Austin and San Antonio to where you can find plenty to do. We give John Newcombe's a 10."—M.B., Adv., January 2016
  • 4½-Ball Rating "I am a 4.0 singles player in my early 60s. I have have been to many tennis camps over the years, ever since I won a week at Nick Bolletierri's in 1988. These include Saddlebrook and New England Tennis Holidays as well as VanderMeer and Vic Braden. The John Newcombe Tennis Ranch was, hands down, the absolute best. Id' return there in a heartbeat. The pros were excellent — attentive, fun, engaged, energetic, knowledgable, and able to convey their knowledge to a wide variety of adult player types who already, for better or worse, have well developed tennis styles and habits. They respected our tennis “personalities" while helping us build on them to improve. In addition to that — and the super venue -- the other true key for me was the heart of the program: i.e., the intermingling of well-conceived drills with frequent point play. Bringing us back to game situations again and again did not allow me to forget that competition is the intended end result of learning and practicing good form. In addition, the video analysis was 30 minutes long and obviously highly detailed.... The ratio of players to pros was part of what made it so special. In the five days I was there we never had more than six people in the program. It was mid-week. Weekends are far more populated, I am told. Still the ratio of pros to players is always one to four, I am also told. Also adding to the delightfulness, on four days out of five the weather was perfect. On the fifth day, there was a monsoon and we experienced the covered courts, but they are not a problem. Just a little noisy if the rain is pounding, as it was on that day... The food is delicious and plentiful at every meal. At dinner, there is always a substantial protein (steak, salmon, chicken breast) and a big dessert (layer cake, cheesecake). Don't go to John Newcombe if you expect to diet! I stayed in a cabin and it was nicely appointed, with maid service (bed made and towels changed) daily. I hear there is hiking nearby; I hope to take advantage of it next time. Also, a pool and jacuzzi -- in October the former was a little too chilly for me. When you're not playing tennis yourself, it's fun and instructive to watch the juniors at the Academy (Li Na, Ryan Harrison, and Leyton Hewitt have all trained here).... I'd like to give a special thanks to my pros: Adrian, Mitch, Josh, and Chris Jacques; also James and Gregor from Scotland. The guys not only helped with the physical, but they reinforced the mental side by always exemplifying the right attitude on court! Conclusion: I took away not just a few tips but a refreshed outlook on the game -- my game. Postscript: I played singles with my regular partner yesterday. We usually split sets and then play a tiebreaker. This time it was a two-set win for me: 6-3, 6-3. Thanks, guys!"—J.S., Adv. Int., November 2015
  • 2½-Ball Rating "Whilst looking for a tennis camp/retreat/vaycay, upon much research...my husband and myself found ourselves at a tennis ranch...yes..John Newcombe's tennis ranch to be exact. If you like 1968, this is your place because the accommodations have barely been touched. The condo is a must because of the washer/dryer. The cleaning crew will make your bed every day but don't expect them to mop your floors or wipe your sink. Five days of toothpaste residue sure adds up. We phoned ahead to make sure there would be campers at our level (USTA 4.0-4.5). We were assured by the tennis director, Chris Jacques, that we would be taken care of. In the end, we were accommodated by hitting with academy pros, other locals were brought in, but not before we raised a stink after a disappointing first two days of 3.0 basic tennis drills. Newk's advertises karaoke, cocktails and comradery with the tennis pros and other campers...we had none of it. The pros did join us for the average meals, 15 of which were included, and we had pleasant conversations. We retired to our condo after dinner around 7:30p because there was really nothing to do on the campus. We heard from another adult tennis camper that the adult weekends have a lot more people, more pros and more fun. Perhaps that was our mistake. We should have tried a tennis weekend with a lot more campers first. We had no idea that there were only four other campers and we traveled a long way from Florida so a weekend wouldn't have made a lot of sense. In the end, Ryan, Ammon, Chris and the other academy pros did make the effort to raise our skill level during the week. We are appreciative of that. There is a lot of reference to John Newcombe's approach to tennis during the week. There were some interesting insights. We would have liked to have seen Ryan play more live tennis with us. We really never saw Ryan hit a rally ball so its unclear to us if he can actually play tennis. We suspect he can, because he was able to dissect our serves and other strokes during the included video analysis shot during the first day of camp. He essentially relied on Ammon, a super nice pro with adequate high-school level tennis ability. The one day Chris joined us, we saw that he had a lot of lefty talent and he did hit in with us. Overall, if you are a 2.5 to 3.5 player, the adult tennis academy is right for you. They do attempt to maintain a 4:1 or better ratio. Advanced (4.0+) players should probably look elsewhere."—T.B., Adv. Int., June 2015

THese people will seriously become your extended family! When i went to Newks as a 12 year old i was a "beginner". However, I was inspired by the elite athletes around me and they pushed me to become better and better. If it were not for attending Newks every Summer I would not have become the college tennis player that i became. Newks is a wonderful place to improve your tennis game, get in shape, and spend your summer! Newks is truly a diamond in the ruff and I am so glad that I found it. Whether you or a beginner or Nadal this place is for you! On a scale of 1-10 this camp gets an 11. OUt of this world! Rock solid!"—E.C., Adv., April 2014

  • 5-Ball Rating "I have been to quite a few tennis camps over the years and Newks Tennis Camp is by far my favorite one! My last two years of high school our tennis team as a whole went twice a year; once in the spring and again in the fall. Every camp substantially enhanced our teams skill and performance. Similarly, my own performance and technique were remarkably improved. Not only does the camp make you a better player but also it is actually a lot of fun! The staff is incredible and they make sure that everyone has a great time. They are always bright spirited and make sure every day is full of laughter and joy. The camps are full of fun activities as well as abundant playing time. I would truly choose Newks Tennis Camp over any other."—K.R., Int., April 2014

The diversity of knowledge and experience is a players wet dream, there will always be someone you can relate to and learn from, whether you are a first year beginner, or a lifetime competitor. Not to mention they'll throw one back and share stories/tennis theory in the Waltzing Matilda (the on ranch bar with the most fantastic bar tenders around) to whoever is willing to listen after a long productive day slapping fuzz on court. A truely magical place in the tennis world. I highly recommend 'NEWKS' to any lover of the game, good food, great atmosphere, and (normally with few exceptions) great weather."—T.J., Adv., April 2014
