As part of an ongoing investment in its already world-class racquet facilities, Boar’s Head Resort installed brand-new Har-Tru clay courts, debuting just in time for the annual Women’s Open in April. The upgraded surfaces, featuring Hydrocourt technology, promise more consistent footing, improved durability, and longer daily play, enhancing both the player experience and the spectator product. And there’s no better stage for their unveiling than this prominent tournament.
A Spring Tradition: The Women’s Open
The Boar’s Head Resort Women’s Open has become a staple of the spring calendar in Charlottesville and on the ITF circuit. Played on clay, the event has drawn rising stars and future champions to Central Virginia for more than two decades, including Danielle Collins, Madison Keys and Jessica Pegula.
Formerly known as the Boyd Tinsley Clay Court Classic, the tournament reflects the deep ties between the resort, the local tennis community, and the University of Virginia. Each April, fans have the rare opportunity to watch high-level professional tennis in an intimate, accessible setting, often spotting tomorrow’s biggest names before they break through on the global stage. This year’s tournament benefits the Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation. Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital provides mission-driven community outreach to support the health needs of underserved persons and to improve the overall health and well-being of our community.
With the introduction of the new Har-Tru courts, the 2026 edition promises to elevate the experience even further, both for competitors and spectators alike. The tournament runs April 20 – April 26, 2026. More information, including live streaming and tickets can be found here.
A Premier Tennis Destination—Rooted in UVA Excellence
Tennis isn’t just an amenity at Boar’s Head Resort. The property serves as the home facility for University of Virginia men’s and women’s tennis programs. The on-site tennis complex is among the finest in collegiate athletics, featuring indoor and outdoor courts, a six-court stadium, and seating for more than 1,000 spectators.
Over the years, the facility has hosted NCAA and ITA championships, USTA and ITF events, and ATP Challenger tournaments, cementing its reputation as one of the premier tennis hubs on the East Coast.
For resort guests, that translates into something unique: the chance to play, train, and spectate in the same environment as elite collegiate and professional athletes.

More Than a Resort: A Historic Virginia Experience
Set on nearly 600 acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Boar’s Head Resort blends tennis with a rich sense of place. The property traces its roots back to the 18th century, when it served as a stop for travelers heading west, and later evolved into one of Virginia’s most distinctive resorts.
Today, it offers 168 rooms, a full-service spa, golf at Birdwood, miles of trails, and a wide range of curated experiences, from wine tours to outdoor recreation.
Its proximity to Monticello and the picturesque grounds of the University of Virginia only adds to its appeal, making it as much a cultural destination as it is an athletic one.
A Year-Round Tennis Calendar
While the Women’s Open is a highlight, it’s far from the only marquee event on the calendar. Boar’s Head Resort regularly hosts professional and collegiate competitions, including ATP Challenger events and major ITA championships. Recent tournaments have brought top-tier talent to Charlottesville, reinforcing the resort’s status as a year-round tennis destination.
This steady cadence of events creates an atmosphere where tennis is always in season, whether you’re training, competing, or spectating.
Why It’s the Perfect Summer & Fall Tennis Getaway
While April’s Women’s Open offers a compelling reason to visit, Boar’s Head Resort truly shines as a tennis travel destination throughout the summer and fall. The warmer months bring ideal conditions for clay-court play, along with a full slate of clinics, camps, and social events. By late summer and early fall, the energy ramps up again as the college tennis season approaches, offering fans the chance to watch Virginia Cavaliers competition in a premier setting.
Off the court, Charlottesville comes alive with vineyard tours, farm-to-table dining, and scenic mountain excursions, making it easy to pair serious tennis with a memorable getaway.
Hear from TRO Guests Who Have Visited Boar’s Head Resort
🎾🎾🎾🎾🎾 “I went to Boars Head for adult tennis academy for the first time last year and had an absolute blast. So much so, a trip this year was planned immediately after. Brian and his coaches not only make the experience fun, but helped me learn a lot and think about things in different ways, helping me improve my game. So happy to have this new annual tradition with my friends.”
🎾🎾🎾🎾🎾 “2026 was the third year our 3.0/3.5 group decided to go to Boar’s Head. Brian is top notch, and so were other Pros. Brian varied the games/drills over the two days and made sure we swapped around a lot. We were tired but wished we booked a full 2hrs. Facilities are fantastic. Food and accommodation were great. Highly recommend Brian and his team for your tennis clinic/camp needs. Saw some much better players being put to work so all skills levels can enjoy.”
