With 31 hard and clay courts, 12 of them indoors, and a six-court stadium for the UVA tennis teams, Boar’s Head appears as a very bright blip on any tennis vacationer’s radar. That’s a huge complex for a resort with only 168 rooms, and the fact that it sits in the foothills of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains near such historic sites as Thomas Jefferson’s mountaintop home Monticello and the handsome University of Virginia campus that he founded only adds to the allure.
The entire resort, including its expansive Sports Club, is owned by the University of Virginia Foundation. As a result, the club also serves as the home site for the University of Virginia’s tennis teams. They can play, train, and host tournaments outdoors on their dedicated complex of six hard courts or indoors at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. What’s more, there are ATP and WTA Pro Challenger events that take place during the spring and fall which provide opportunities to see great tennis up close at no cost (Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek are past participants).
Boar’s Head Sports Club, which has long served local members and the University of Virginia teams magnificently, also has an interest in the needs of hotel guests. With a deep roster of tennis professionals under head pro Troy Porco, it has the staff to mount a broad program of weekly events, including several weekly clinics of various sorts—Beginner/Intermediate, Advanced, Cardio, and “Drills For Thrills”—every day of the week. There are also year-round junior camps/clinics (available to the children of hotel guests), run by Ohio State University standout and former ATP touring pro Ralf Steinbach, and an adult tennis academy—with customized programs offered most weekends—headed by seasoned ALTA coach Brian Glass.
Tennis Staff: Troy Porco oversees the entire Boar’s Head Tennis Club program. He played collegiate tennis at Florida International University and then went on to coach the Auburn University women’s team and helped to coach the UVA women’s team before joining the Boar’s Head staff.
Court Complex: There are 9 outdoor hard courts and 10 outdoor clay courts. Those are supplemented by 12 indoor hard courts. Pickleball has six indoor courts (on courts they share with tennis) and 6 permanent outdoor courts. All of that is in addition to the new 6-court stadium reserved for UVA tennis teams and competition.
Off Court
Golf Courses: Davis Love II recently redesigned the resort’s championship Birdwood Golf Course creating what is, in fact, a brand-new golf course, to the degree that some of its holes are on new land and others are now played in the opposite direction. Six sets of tees mean the par-71 course plays from 4,000 to 7,200 yards. Its signature 16th, 17th, and 18th fairways wrap around the historic Birdwood Mansion. In addition, there is a 6-hole, pad-3 course.
Spa & Fitness Center: The Boar’s Head Spa is once again open following a complete renovation. The tennis courts are part of the Sports Club, a sprawling complex comprising a Junior Olympic swimming pool and two other pools, a state-of-the-art fitness center with a Cardio theater and Cybex weight-training, a climbing wall, squash and racquetball courts, some 55 weekly classes (among them Pilates and water aerobics), kids’ programs, and child care.
Dining: There are four food outlets at the Boar’s Head, chief among them the recently renovated Mill Room in the restored 1834 grist mill. It focuses on fresh, local ingredients and has a lounge and outdoor seating. In addition, you have the choice Racquets Restaurant and the outdoor Deep End Bar & Grill, both located at the Sports Club, as well as the Birdwood Ba & Grill in the golf clubhouse.
Accommodations
The 170 rooms occupy four four-story buildings in stone and cafe-au-lait-colored clapboard with gables on their shingle or metal roofs. The decor runs to four-poster beds and brass lamps, typical of a country estate, but with modern amenities like high-speed Internet access. Some have fireplaces and balconies. Views tend to be of the lake or verdant countryside.
Getting there
Seasons: Year-round
Travel Instructions: The nearest airport is Charlottesville-Albemarle Regional Airport (CHO), which is 10 miles from the resort.
The tennis programs and instructors are amazing. The pickle ball program is fun and growing especially with dedicated courts being built right now. Great club!!

We enjoyed the clinics and the staff very much.
TY
Beautiful setting and atmosphere, friendly staff, great amenities and options. All around wonderful!
SS
Boar’s Head Resort offers one of the best tennis experiences around. Not only are the pros and programs amazing, but there is an extra energy in the air because the top-ranked UVA tennis teams share the space. You may leave the court to find the UVA women playing Duke or the UVA men battling Wake Forrest. Kids love it here, with a climbing wall, ping pong, a pool, squash, tennis, and all kinds of other activities, organized and free-range.
BM
Locared in an area that has many other options such as vineyards, hiking, and many historical sites.
KY
I am a regular member and find the tennis programs extremely strong as are the coaching staff.
JK
Boar Head’s strengths are the friendly coaches and the wide variety of classes available daily. The vibe is very relaxed and facilities are excellent. I can’t think of any negatives.

It’s the greatest spot you can imagine in a beautiful area. If you’re a tennis player and you don’t go enjoy this place you are really missing out. It’s the best I’ve seen.
MW
Great facilities. Staff that’s highly motivated to ensure your satisfaction. .
KV
I’ve been to Boar’s Head Resort for their tennis camp three times and love it! The pros are exceptional and, even though we are in a group, they take time to work with each person individually. I have improved my timing, strokes and strategy every single time. The facilities are top notch. I can’t wait to go again.
LR
Nice and friendly staff at this resort. The head tennis pro runs a terrific tennis program with a fantastic staff of pros to fit everyone’s needs and personality. The gym was just retrofitted with all new equipment. The newly renovated restaurant is going to be awesome!!
MK
This is a truly amazing resort. With 14 outdoor courts & 12 indoor courts, you can always find a court to use. There are a multitude of drop in clinics at every level to choose from, and many tennis professionals. Love it!
KM
The resort ihas been in renovation and expansion mode for the last few years. The beautifully designed and newly renovated dining areas and resort lobby are ready to open just in time for the outdoor spring tennis season in beautiful Charlittesville, Virginia.
JD
Great clinics and winnerup sessions Great instructors
MM
Love the Boar’s Head Tennis scene. The facilities are unrivaled, and the pros have the time and ability to meet the needs of every level player. There is an active group of local players – of all abilities – who take advantage of the club’s welcoming atmosphere.
CS
Strengths are the availability of both indoor and outdoor, in particular outdoor clay courts; drop-in clinics, leagues, and social play for all levels; and quality of tennis instructors. Weaknesses include the scheduling of maintenance that impedes early morning play times during the indoor season. High fees for court time during peak hours. Need a more expansive pro-shop for tennis.
PJ
Dave Hardy has set up two custom weekend academies for me and my partner. We are 3.0 players (singles and doubles). He did a great job meeting us where we are and helping us identify specific improvements to our mechanics/technique. The facility is top-notch, with great locker rooms, gym, pool, on-site restaurant, parking. Charlottesville is a great weekend getaway for couples! Recommend staying downtown for easy access to restaurants. Boar’s Head is a 10-minute drive outside the city center.
BM
Great value and plenty opportunities to get on the court.
JS
Excellent facilities and staff. Tough restaurant situation while they undergo renovation.
CM
Fabulous instructors- Jon, Dave and Troy are some of the best I’ve experienced. They are clear in their explanations, purposeful with the demonstrations and activities, and all have s great sense of humor which makes the experience fun. Will definitely attend again and again!
LG
Jon and Dave are amazing instructors, always well prepared with fun drills and great doubles strategies. They have improved my game significantly.
NJ
Charlottesville is such a wonderful place to come for a tennis vacation. The Boars Head Tennis Academy was great for my group of ladies. We all play together a great deal and we need to work on strategy not technique. The pros at this facility catered a special program designed for our group. Everyone’s game was improved by taking this together. Grab a group of players and come enjoy learning and playing together! You will not regret it.
WB
Awesome facilities. Great pros. Superior instruction. Excellent communications. Competitive rates. And fun!
CR
Simply wonderful. The Tennis instruction was great, informative and fun. The lodging was very comfortable and we could walk to the Tennis facility which was outstanding!
BN
Superb tennis academy with top-notch instructions. The things I learned there have been incredibly useful in my league play. The guts are professional, but also friendly and down-to-earth. The teaching method is always positive. The facilities are very nice and often have tournaments to watch. I will certainly return!
DG
This camp was perfect for me. As an adult who has experience, the lessons were designed to build on my strengths. The pacing was intense but accommodated my comfort level. The setting in Charlotte siville was gorgeous. One of the best experiences I have had
BD
Outstanding instructional tennis academy and clinics with hands-on pros. Excellent guidance on strategy, movement and positioning. Individually works with each of the group participants on their requested weaknesses or areas of improvement. Great follow up from the instructors on lessons/clinics. A favorite of our northern Virginia tennis group with many happy players, experience in playing and improvement of our entire tennis game.

With 12 beautiful indoor hard courts, 10 Har-Tru clay courts, additional outdoor courts, a world-class squash facility, pools, fitness facilities, and all the great amenities you would expect from a world class resort, Boar’s Head offers a great experience to its members and guests. The staff is friendly and helpful, and multiple pros are always available to help improve your play. If you’re a tennis lover, this is a must if your travel plans include central Virginia.
KC
The Boars Head is an amazing full service tennis resort with a first class tennis pro, Jon Sarosiek. You can play indoors or outdoors, on well maintained clay or hard surface courts . If you are segueing to pickle ball, that is offered as well. There is a new, world class squash facility in case you want to continue to broaden your racquet skills. There are hiking trails and three large pools including a “quiet” adult pool adjacent to the Boars Head Inn Spa. The fitness facility boasts private cycling studios, yoga and a wide assortment of fitness classes as well as state of the art fitness equipment.
RK

Awesome, welcoming and easy. It will be even better when the newly designed golf course and 3 par course are finished. Tennis club, pools, spa, fitness are top notch.
SM
The Boar’s Head is a humming place–LOTS of social events, beautiful indoor hard-surface and outdoor clay courts, and a busy work-out area with excellent personal trainers. The facility is able to accommodate professional tennis tournaments as well as USTA-sponsored tournaments and charity events. The racquet ball center is one of the top tournament sites in the country. Pickleball enthusiasts will be pleased with both indoor and outdoor court time, as well as qualified instructors. The Boars Head also sponsors national-level pickleball tournaments. Top this off with a large swimming pool and an outside cafe overlooking the pool area. The Birdwood Golf Course is within walking distance and offers its own cafe for snacks and drinks with a beautiful mountain view. The historic University of Virginia campus is just a few minutes away. The city of Charlottesville and the surrounding areas offer lots of dining choices, local wineries, cideries, and craft breweries.

Awesome Inn, great food. Incredible indoor tennis facility. And, just in case, a world-class squash facility as well.
GF
Great coaching, well kept facility with many courts. The kids scene here is particularly good. They socialize, play tennis, and have a great time together.
JD
This is hands down the best tennis resort I have attended. They consistently have a plan and the drills complement the plan so that players have a clear direction. My game has grown so much in the years I have worked with Jon and Dave. I highly recommend his camp/clinics.
CG
These guys at Boar’s Head are amazing! They listen, they watch and they strive to make everyone be a better tennis player. They really pay attention. I have attended a few tennis academies from these pros and learn many new things each time. The facility is top notch as well as the training you’ll get from Jon & Dave. 5 stars guys! Really there are no weaknesses that I can think of. Maybe a better discount in the tennis shop? I have traveled the country taking many tennis clinics and I’m proud to have these guys only an hour away from me. Besides Charlottesville, Virginia is amazing place to visit with Mountains, wineries, breweries and great for foodie people.

Just got back from a tennis weekend at the Boars Head Resort and couldn’t be happier with the way it went. Everything from the instruction/advice, drills and overall organization of the training exceeded my expectations. Jon and Dave ran a great clinic for me and 5 other guys – lots of hard work and lots of fun. They kept the intensity level high for 3 hours of drilling and gave great advice on some improvements I could make to my game. The resort and facilities were top notch. Courts were in excellent condition (played on both indoor hard and outdoor clay) and the amenities of the club were great. I have been to tennis resorts all over the country and The Boars Head ranks right up there with the best. If you are looking for a beautiful resort, great facility and excellent instruction – you will find them all at the Boars Head.
JC
Boar’s Head is a great racquet-sport facility (not only tennis, but also squash and pickleball). Courts are professional-quality (UVA’s men’s and women’s tennis and squash teams train and play there), and the staff is friendly and highly competent. We’ve become members at Boar’s Head, and I can say that it has been one of the best decisions that our family has ever made!
AB
Amazing facility. Beautiful tennis courts and spa. Great food and excellent service.
GF
Fantastic coaches working hard (they’re so dedicated) in a really good facility with indoor and outdoor courts. Many players at all levels (including kids) to match with. A really good, friendly yet competitive kids scene. Kids playing chess or doing homework while waiting for their matches. My kids just can’t get enough of it they love it so much. Pro tournaments and social tournaments regularly scheduled.
CB
Boars Head is nestled in the beautiful Virginia rolling hills and has an excellent tennis program. The courts are very well maintained and the facilities are beautiful and highly functional. The coaching staff has a lot of experience, but what sets them apart is their attention to each player and their very apparent LOVE for tennis. Had a blast!
PR
Great tennis, great pro.

I am a club member and very much enjoy the Tennis program. The pros are great, selection of tennis clinics and courts for play. There has been an increased interest by resort guests which I like…to meet and play with different people. This past fall there was a guest who fled one of the hurricanes in Florida. Her name was Jasmine and she was a good player. She came to clinics daily and we became friends. She has family in the area and plans to come back when in town. That is a good sign for Boars Head….how I feel about Tennis resorts I visit in my travels.

The Boar’s Head is an amazing place. It is the perfect place for families and retirees alike. The staff at this Sports club and Resort are helpful and accommodating. They make the experience even more special. Whether you want to be a full time member or you are visiting short term, the Boar’s Head is the place to be.

I absolutely loved my time spent hitting at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Dave was just one of the many amazing instructors who absolutely served as a role model for both respect & professionalism as he was both persevering & tireless with his teaching. Dave was always so positive & he was quickly able to see his students abilities & limitations. He made it his priority, to look for the quintessential experience for each, & all of his students!!! Looking for a truly fabulous time learning new techniques with your tennis & having a wonderful experience? Well, then Boar’s Head should be your new Tennis Destination!!! It was an absolutely beautiful, breathtaking & fun place to visit in the Blue Ridge Mountains, & you can have a fabulous time playing tennis for sure, along with all of the other wonderful things available!!!
