For almost as long as I’ve written about tennis vacations, I have dreamed of taking part in one of the Roy Emerson Tennis Weeks at the Gstaad Palace in Switzerland. Every summer for more than 40 years, this legendary winner of 12 Grand Slam singles titles and 16 Grand Slam doubles titles has taken up residence on the red-clay courts at this historic luxury hotel, dispensing tennis wisdom and tales from the tour to an assembled group of tennis enthusiasts from all over the world.
It’s not hard to appreciate why this was on my bucket list. Who wouldn’t want to spend a week with one of the greatest tennis players ever? However there was something more: opportunities like this are becoming increasingly rare. It is unthinkable that any of this generation’s crop of Grand Slam title-holders will ever devote whole weeks to teaching and entertaining hackers after they leave the tour. Once Emerson retires—and at age 86 with bad knees, he will eventually—there is no one with anything remotely like his tennis accomplishments waiting in the wings to take his place.
Beyond Emerson himself, part of the allure of these tennis weeks is their location in Europe. After an overnight flight to Geneva, I boarded a train at the airport for the scenic two-plus hour ride, first climbing above the vineyards lining Lake Geneva and then, after changing trains at Montreux, ascending into the Alps and eventually pulling into the station at Gstaad. From there, I could look up and see the turreted Gstaad Palace perched on a hillside above, my home for the next week.
As one of the Leading Hotels in the World, the 150-room Gstaad Palace seamlessly combines elegance and authenticity. It dates to 1913 but more importantly it has been managed since 1938 (and owned since 1947) by the Scherz family. The service is unfailingly gracious and professional, from the bellman who picks you up at the train station to the waiters in the dining room. Recent renovations have kept the rooms—each seemingly a little different—thoroughly up to date. And the creature comforts continue with an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, spa, fitness center, and array of upscale shops.
Emerson’s weeklong program, which runs five hours a day in a setting at 3,000 feet, may seem more rigorous than you’d expect to find at a luxury hotel in the Swiss Alps. Yet he has developed an extraordinarily loyal international following, some of whom come if not every year then every few years. The appeal may begin on the courts; however, because the campers, Emerson, his wife Joy, and several of the pros have many of their meals together (most dining is included in the package price), a genuine camaraderie develops, spurred on by the Emersons’ wealth of stories (they met when, according to Roy, he ball-boyed for one of her matches and was smitten) from the days when Aussie players were legendary for their work ethic, rigorous training, and booze-fueled partying, though Emerson himself no longer drinks.
Camps sizes vary from 15 – 40 (he has access to other courts in town if necessary). Divided into groups of three or four by level, we spent every morning and afternoon working on technique, doing drills, and playing doubles with members of his accomplished staff. Emerson himself roamed from court to court, ensuring that each participant benefited from his expertise and encouragement. When I lost concentration in the middle of a doubles point, he was quick to poke fun, saying, “Try to do your sleeping at night.”
Midweek, the routine is pleasantly interrupted as everyone embarks on a picnic at Ruedi and Helen Wehren’s farm in the Alps, where everyone dines on a sumptuous lunch catered by the Palace chef, complemented by the Wehrens’ raclette and Alp cheeses. Another highlight is the evening when Emmo gathers everyone for dinner at a traditional Swiss restaurant.
The holiday comes to an end all too quickly. On the final evening, everyone gathers for a farewell dinner, culminating in a sing-along with Roy as he performs “Waltzing Matilda.” It is a fitting conclusion to an invigorating and harmonious week.

Accommodations
The 150-room Gstaad Palace manages to be at once elegant and unpretentious.
The prices for the Emerson weeks include lodging for six nights, instruction, all meals, one massage, use of the swimming pool and gymnasium, and taxes. The camp fills up quickly, but the Emersons keep a waiting list.

We took our family of 5 here for a wonderful break in July of 2018. Roy and Joy are truly two of the most incredible people who you will ever meet. The resort was stunning and our connecting room was exactly what we would have dreamed of for this trip. It seemed that mostly everyone was a returning guest which says a lot. Roy and Joy his wife make this a week like no other. They have very specific things scheduled for each night after you play. The tennis and courts were wonderful and the pros a ton of fun. The pool is not so great and kept way too cold. The pool in the spa however was fantastic but did not allow children except on certain days and times. This is not really a trip to take young kids…there is not enough for them to do and you will want to play tennis all day. It is more appropriate for couples or individuals. This is an experience of a lifetime and I highly recommend you go before they decide not to have it anymore!! Just amazing!!

This coming summer will be our third year of participation in the Roy Emerson tennis weeks in Gstaad, Switzerland. We first went on the recommendation of friends who had attended and were blown away by the combination of Roy’s active participation (including personal attention to each student during the week, from which I have benefited greatly!), the assembly of talented and personable pros he brings together as faculty (ratio is usually 3 students to 1 pro, lots of individual attention!), the amount of teaching and tennis–5 hours a day, much more than in a lot of the tennis camps we have researched. Yet, the schedule is very civilized, with a long lunch hour between morning and afternoon sessions. Our setting, the Gstaad Palace, is truly a Grand Hotel in the old tradition, with lovely rooms in a gorgeous setting, top-notch service, and a kitchen that consistently produces mouth-watering options, of which there are many. Plus the price is all inclusive of the tennis camp, plus room and full board. We love the hotel so much we add extra days around our tennis week. This year we have recruited 4 other members of the Palm Springs Tennis Club to join us.

To experience Roy’s tennis camp is every tennis enthusiast’s dream and one which does not disappoint. Roy and his excellent team of coaches are always encouraging and enthusiastic and it is a privilege to have on-court time with Roy during the week – not only will you enjoy his coaching but also his great sense of humour. The week is wonderfully organised by Joy who does a tremendous job ensuring each and every guest has a carefree stay. All of this takes place is the spectacular setting of the Palace Hotel where you will find wonderful food and welcoming staff who strive to make everyone’s stay memorable.

This was a bucket list trip for me the first time I went. Since then, I’ve decided it’s a yearly necessity. Just for the tennis itself, the week is amazing. Roy Emerson and his staff of pros really helped pinpoint some issues with my game. Add on the beautiful Alpine scenery, the wonderful hospitality of the Palace hotel, the great social events, and you could not ask for more. Gstaad is so picturesque and pretty easy to get to via Geneva.
SR
Five stars! The camp was great and the location is one of the most beautiful in the world.
RB
Roy and Joy Emerson host a fantastic week of tennis coaching and sociability in the unparalleled surroundings of the Gstaad Palace hotel. All standards of play are catered for by the top flight team of coaches and the hotel provides ultimate luxury between sessions. Not to be missed!
PH
This is a truely awesome week that simply leaves no room for improval. Where else in the world would you get to be at close quaters with on of the worlds true tennis legends for a week? Roy Emerson is not only a true legend and an affable person, he also has the abiltly to point out the ways in which you can improve your game which is so encouraging. And then there’s the breathtaking fantastic alpine setting and the Palace Hotel offiering a package of luxury and comfort that cannot be surpassed. The food, the staff, the rooms, the atmosphere, everything is so complete. As a long time returnee I keep coming back for more.
BT
Absolutely fabulous tennis camp – it can’t get any better! To share the tennis court with the great Roy Emerson is such an inspiration, and his lovely wife Joy takes wonderful care of all the participants. They are supported by a very experienced and encouraging team of Pros. Tennis is great, the hotel is superb, and the location in the Gstaad mountains is stunning. We have been coming for many years and are very happy to come back next summer!

I promise if there was a weakness in this tennis camp, I would tell you. It’s great for solo travelers, it’s awesome for couples. It’s perfect for teams. Just learning to play, no problem. 4.5 to 5.0. – come on to Gstaad. My husband and I have been 14 times and will be there every year until we physically can’t. I have a feeling Roy Emerson will be on the court longer than we will! He’s a fantastic coach and he only brings along other coaches with excellent credentials. And then there’s the hotel. And the food and the scenery and Switzerland. All in all it’s a can’t miss.
BB
Roy Emerson and his team of coaches made our tennis week at the Palace Hotel Gstaad a perfect combination of luxury holiday and tough tennis camp. 25 hours of intensive and instructive coaching, drills and tactical insider tips for doubles play. No weaknesses that we were aware of.
SR
This is truly tennis heaven! The setting is spectacular, the Palace Hotel is beyond compare with warm and personal staff. And then there’s the tennis: ratio of pros to participants is 1: 3 and of course Roy’s daily Instruction peppered with stories and jokes is a highlight, beautifully maintained clay courts with indoor courts readily available if rain. It has been a privilege to attend tennis weeks!
MF
Outstanding accommodations, delicious meals, breathtaking views of the Swiss mountains, all this and 5 hours of tennis instruction per day from Grand Slam Champion Roy Emerson and some of the best pros from Switzerland and places all over the world. I have attended Emerson Tennis Weeks for the past 4 summers and I can’t wait to return next year.
AB
Roy Emerson and his team run a fantastic service that goes beyond improving your game, don’t get me wrong you do that too! The setting is unbelievable with the Gstaad Palace offering every comfort imaginable, both food and service being superb. I wasn’t even a tennis buff, before I grumpily accompanied my wife the first time I went, and since then have been an absolute convert. It is an amazing holiday with tennis at its heart, and I would not pass up on it The whole week is structured brilliantly and flashes by all too fast, with a real comradery formed and friendships that continue from one year to the next. I couldn’t think of a nicer place to play tennis and with the presence of Roy all week long on the courts, laughs are guaranteed!
MB
The Gstaad Palace is an iconic hotel, and for all the right reasons, in spite of being palatial, it feels like home as it is still run by the family that own it who are very much hands on with the staff and guests. Returning each year for Roy’s tennis week is a treat in every sense, everything is familiar, the staff are fantastic, and the food superlative. Meals are served either on the beautiful sunny terrace overlooking the mountains, or in their beautiful dining rooms, with an air of elegance but informal and friendly too. The grounds of the Palace are beautiful with the Spa and pools being a focus for after tennis activities. The massages are some of the best I have ever had. Moving on to the tennis, we couldn’t be in better hands with Roy and his team, who make every session such fun to be on court. Instruction is followed by supervised play, and everyday lends itself to getting better in an atmosphere of fun and competitiveness in equal measure, with the right mindset, it couldn’t be more enjoyable. The coaches are fantastic, and the week is split up by a gastronomic picnic up in the mountains….Sound of Music style, as we have a lovely sing- a-long to end an amazing afternoon away from the courts, deepening already well formed friendships, it is a laugh! It is a unique set up, can’t be bettered, because the level of professionalism yet familiarity are beautifully balanced, and Joy, Roy’s wife, steps in quickly if there are any niggles, which there rarely are, ironing them out to meet everyone’s approval. Lastly I don’t even need to describe the accommodation at the Palace as it is nothing short of sumptuous, you wouldn’t expect anything less! So one word of advice….GO!
SS
Amazing hotel, unbelievable tennis.

Seven years ago, having never picked up a tennis racquet, my husband asked if I would like to learn the game. I understood this was a sport that occupied a lot of his time. I saw other women playing tennis and I never really had the opportunity. My husband took me out and begun to give me instructions. He lost his patients after a time and we decided to employ a pro to work with me. I worked hard and started to really like the exercise. After a year we decided to go to Europe for vacation. We found the Roy Emerson Tennis Week through the internet. When we made the reservations I thought I would be sort of excluded, and I would just be watching. Wow, was I wrong. Roy, himself took me aside and worked with me. He instructed the pro’s on what he thought I needed. I will never forget the attention I received and how much better I played after one week. I left with so much more confidence, to really be a player. Each year we find a way to go back for a week of outstanding food, magnificent scenery and great tennis. We stay in an actual palace for the week and are truly treated as royalty. You have access to a spa, with professional therapist, to give you one free massage, a work out room with machines you have never seen before. The indoor pool is vast and heated with more water massage machinery if you chose. All this is included in the price along with a trip for an outdoor picnic surrounded by the most beautiful mountains in the world. I can only tell you one thing, that I am tremendously proud of, I AM NOW RATED AS A (4.0 ) AND GOING BACK FOR MORE. Anybody interested in improving their game, should not overlook this outstanding week of learning and playing the game of tennis with several great players watching and improving your tennis. Good Luck

Start in Geneve, Switzerland and hop on the modern train through the most beautiful breathtaking country mountains in the world. When it stops in Gstaad you will have a personal car and driver pick you up and drive you to a real Palace on the mountain, that will receive you, as a most important person. That evening, you will personally meet the great Roy Emerson and his wife Joy. They will explain the weeks activities on the beautiful red clay courts that are at your disposal during the week. You will also learn that they have set up how the pro’s will carefully be working with you individually, to improve your game. Breakfast lunch and dinner are so special, that you will be begging for the recipes. When the week is over, and you have become close friends with Roy and Joy, you will have a better forehand, backhand, and serve, and be already planning how you can do this unbelievable tennis dream again.

I had the great pleasure to once again join the Roy Emerson Tennis Camp in Gstaad last September. It was a wonderful week! I felt very welcome and was very happy to improve my tennis with the great and always encouraging Roy Emerson and his excellent team of pros. The camp takes place at a magnificent five star hotel. This tennis camp is truly unique!
BT
Absolutely fabulous Tennis Camp! Roy Emerson with his stunning knowledge and experience and his great sense of humour, together with his wonderful team of pros, made our tennis improve so much! We had such a wonderful time that we booked a second week right away. Superb hotel and food too. It can’t get any better! We can’t wait to be back next year!
AM
Great program in a lovely location. Can’t beat the accommodations, food and staff.

So,, with the superb food,, ambiance and tennis, one has all they ever hoped for in a tennis vacation. NOT TO BE MISSED
MM
There are no weaknesses, in the week’s experience that is. Only in players trying to improve their games. But that too is helped by the excellent and personal instruction of Roy’s select team of pros. Roy himself is the pro-player in chief and always willing to spend individual time with participants. The exquisite setting of Gstaad and the Palace Hotel combine to make this “Tennis Heaven”. Not an exaggeration.

SUPERB Experience! I have attended many national and international tennis camps, this one takes the cake! Roy is a hands on, involved at every level, patient instructor who worked tirelessly with me to improve my game. Motivating, knowledgeable and with a great sense of humor, Roy made sure that we all benefitted from this many years of teaching experience .On and off the courts this vacation has been consistently outstanding!! Another asset of the camp is the international team of fit tennis pros who will give you a good run for your money. They will chase each ball down, play out balls and cover the entire court in doubles. :)) The setting in the Swiss Alps is a dream come true, as is the Palace Hotel which lives up to its royal name While Roy is on the courts, his wife Joy organized fun picnics, Swiss evenings & dinners filled with music and camaraderie. This camp is without a doubt an absolute ACE which should not be missed!
KO
I highly reccommend the Roy Emmerson tennis camp at the Gstadd Place. It is truly enchanting and tennis experience was five star. The instructors are very high level and do a great job of working with every player on their court. I made some great friends and learned more about tennis in a week of the Emmerson camp than I have learned in my ten years of playing. The Palace is exceptional. The overall experience was world class!!!
JB
BEST TENNIS CAMP EVER! Joy and Roy Emerson have been hosting this camp for several weeks every summer for over 40 years. Roy, one of the best players ever, remains passionate about teaching and every summer assembles a special group of pros to assist him. This takes place in a spectacular alpine setting at the exquisite Gstaad Palce Hotel. The week always goes by too quickly and leaves you counting the days until you can return.
ST
Warning: This week is addictive ! Too much of fresh Swiss air, of superb surroundings, of comforting Spa, of superlative meals & wines… A great tennis experience, the Pros are so competent, and fun too. To top it all you meet very interesting people… So BEWARE !
IS
Roys’s Tennis Camp was fantastic. If you are a beginner or a very advanced tennis player it is the place for you. You are placed with people of your playing level. Everyone who attends have a really fun time. Roy instruction of each technic was demonstrated by the other Pros at the clinic. Socializing with people who have your same interest was so enjoyable. I would highly recommend the Gstaad Palace and Roy Emerson’s Tennis. My husband and I actually stayed for 2 weeks at Roy’s Tennis Camp at the Palace. Roy and the Palace is a 5 star rating!!! A must add to anyones “buck list”
MR
My experience at Gstaad Palace as an attendee at Roy Emerson Tennis Camp was extraordinary. The tennis instruction was top notch- appropriately instructing and correcting without being imposing or demanding. My fellow ‘campers’ were from all over the world and while being tennis players and enthusiasts they have other lives, professions and interests. They were cultured and interesting people and that was an added benefit to the fun! The Gstaad Paiace is sonething special. If you have the time and the means to attend this camp do so. It is a most memorable vacation-trip-place and most importantly- tennis experience!
PH
This is the most fabulous tennis camp ever as I can only repeat as a long time returnee. First of all the magnificient setting of the superb Palace Hotel in the Bernois mountains of Switzerland is second to nothing. The pro team, the tennis session and above all Roy Emersons professional and encouraging advice all put your game on the right track. At the end of the week, typically on Friday night at the fareeell dinner you make a firm decision to come back next year.
SC
I just returned from the Palace Hotel in GSTAAD, SWITZERLAND, where I again totally enjoyed Roy Emerson Tennis Weeks! It is just outstanding in every way. I seem to return every year and it never disappoints. If you are an expert, or like me just a “club player”, Roy is able to match you with the perfect combination of players and instructors so that each day is a fabulous experience for everyone. What could be better than good tennis, a five star hotel, fabulous food, a great spa and learning from Roy Emerson!
SM
Its in an exceptional setting. Mr Roy Emerson is an exceptional person and is the heart and sole of the camp and is very professional. His tips are invaluable especially for doubles play. Stellar food and exceptional service at the resort with other activities like hiking, para gliding, golf available in case of a non tennis playing partner. Meet rather Interesting people. The only low light would be if the weather plays spoil sport and even then there are indoor courts. The high light is the gourmet picnic mid camp. Service and cuisine and spa at the resort commendable.

For a tennis buff ,experiencing & indulging in wonderful environment located in the midst of tranquil & serene place tucked away in the rolling mountains of Alps with alternating snow topped peaks…healthy and an enticing spread of fresh food….served with a touch of personal care is The Palace Hotel at Gstaad for you…. At the grand slam Roy Emerson has won 28 titles which includes 12 singles titles. At the Swiss Champiomships in Gstaad, he has won 5 singles titles & 4 doubles titles and has been running a TennisCamp for the last 40 years at the Palace Hotel. His passion to part with tennis strategies spreading to very basics along with pros of international achievements is an ultimate experience for all tennis-passionate players. Stories of tennis pros of yesteryears shared by Roy are once in a life term experience across the dinner table. Like the best of wine..year after year every visit to Roy Emerson’s tennis week grows with wonderful cerebral tastes and memories ……with huge looking forward to the next season….Joy, Roy’s wife has always been the main person behind the meticulous happenings of the tennis week..
CC
Great intense tennis clinic under guidance of the legendary Roy Emerson and his enthusiastic tennis staff. The setting in the beautiful Palace Hotel surrounded by mountains is second to none. Food, service and Spa facilities of the hotel are superb. Highly recommend this Tennis Camp!
JN
one of the best weeks i’ve ever had, the Tennis instruction level, the hotel, the food and the group – was great !!!
RT
It is a tenniscourse with a very high level: the course itself has a very high level and the hotel has a very high level.
SJ
Excellent week of tennis and relaxation. Very well structured and great group of people
OO
In a nice area, the mountains with good weather, 5 star hotel, with the 5 star lessons of Roy Emerson and his gently pro’s. Is was my 2nd time in Gstaad and I would be there next year.
GM
As a relative newcomer to the sport, I was looking for a week of concentrated tennis coaching in a nice environment with first class accommodation. Of course, the name ‘Roy Emerson’ was the first attraction to this camp, but I also asked my Swiss friends their opinions on the Gstaad Palace. Their views convinced me that this would be the right location and I duly signed up for a week in July 2011. I have to say I wasn’t disappointed in any way. Both Roy and Joy made everyone feel very welcome from the start and it was nice to mix with nice people from a variety of countries. The tennis coaches were all very experienced and above all, patient. I received a lot of individual coaching from Roy and from the other coaches and I can say that my modest game improved significantly as a result of this week. The Palace Hotel is excellent with first class facilities and fine dining and the lunchtime picnic in the mountains was quite delightful. I’m going back again in July this year.
TN
I attend the Roy Emerson Tennis week in September 2011. Roy and Joy Emerson are the consumate hosts. They both warm and hospitable. Also, Roy’s Aussie sense of humour both on and off the court was very entertaining. Because most of the coaches also stayed at the resort it meant that they ate and socialise with everyone. This I found to be a fantastic touch to the week at Gstaad. The biggest stength of this tennis week is that each player is exposed to wide variety of coaches (including Roy himself) and they cater for a diverse range of standards. Being a regular club player, I was concerned about the level of play and the amount I could learn. I was pleasantly suprised in that I learnt something from each of the coaches and that the organised scratch matches were mainly of a high level. This setup had its downside in that I found that certain coaches to be more suited to my style of play than others and because of the rotation system, I was unable to spend more time with them. Having said that, I found the experience with each coach to be pleasant and I noticed that Roy endeavoured to cater for everyone and all requests that were made. The accommodation at Gstaad Palace was impeccable. My room was superb and the staff at Gstaad Palace were friendly and polite. The food was fantastic and the service was exceptional in the restrauant. The only small issue I had was that it was not clear what food and drinks were included and excluded from the Roy Emerson week package. Of course this is only minor issue because the friendly staff at the Gstaad Palace were happy to clarify this, but it would have been nice not to have to do this. Be aware that some of the drinks at the Gstaad Palace bar are very expensive, but I suppose this is to be expected in a 5 star hotel! However, if you stick to the package deal provided, the week represents good value. Overall, I rate this week very highly and would not hesitate to recommend it to my fellow tennis players.
TS
This is as close to a Utopian experience for a tennis player as possible. The setting is amazing, with beautifully maintained clay courts laid out with a view of a glacier even in the summertime. The tennis is both challenging and instructive: Roy demonstrates a separate stroke or strategy twice a day, which is then followed by a two-hour session with either Roy or one of the seasoned pros. The week is filled with humor and good cheer, all with an exquisite array of great food and wines, a professional hotel staff that is mostly constant over the 10-years we have been there, and, if more is needed, an Olympic-size pool and world-class spa. Joy Emerson adds the final touch of fun and grace to the week, and by the end of the week you feel like you’ve joined a tennis family.
VE
simply put have had a great time. The pros, the setting, the company have been wonderful. As long as i am physically fit i will be coming annually to Gstaad and Roys camp. I cant wait until my teenager can join me at the camp and receive the occasional caustic yet spot on pearls of wisdom from the Great man himself. I am a decent player but 2 little hints from Roy and my game has improved dramatically this year. I would probably prefer a few more drills tossed in but one plays so much tennis during the week that it probably has little impact. Gstaad Palace is a sight to behold and the general atmosphere is incomparable no matter what level of tennis one plays.
JV
Paradise, with the best tennis instruction I’ve ever had. I look forward to this tennis week every year. Roy, the pro’s, the participants are all great. The Palace Hotel in Gstaad is truly 5 star.
AM
Roy Emerson has an uncanny ability to assess your strengths and weaknesses from the first few shots – and to move you around during the week, matching you with other players and coaches who will ensure you play some of the best tennis of your life! And laugh out loud while doing so! The quality is as high as you could imagine – whether we are talking about the tennis, the teaching or the Palace – quite literally – where the camp is based. The mountain scenery is spectacular – and so is the food – but I bet what you will really remember is the wonderful people – the extraordinary hotel staff, the charismatic tennis pros and, in our experience, many of your fellow players.
MP
fantastic scenery, great professional tennis coaches, friendly atmosphere, good food, excellent wine,
CS
This is the ultimate tennis week. If you love tennis, you’ll love Roy and his crew of coaches – especially his son Antony. The coaching is spot on, you’ll never have a dull moment and you’ll be in the lap of luxury at the Gstaad Palace. It is a great privilege to be coached by the great Roy Emerson and everyone gets a fair share of his time and attention. Cross racquets with Roy and your crossing racquets with a true tennis legend. And if you want something a little special in addition to the tennis, the Spa at the Palace is amazing, the villages are gorgeous and the social events organised by Roy’s wonderfully lovely wife, Joy are even more special. I’ve now been twice and I can’t wait to go again.
JM
In 2004, the USTA magazine had a centerfold in the February issue which was aerial photo of the tennis courts at the Palace Hotel. We were in out family room and I told my husband that we would need to go there that summer. He stated that he had never really had any interest in going to Switzerland. I told him that nonetheless, we were going to Gstaad, Switzerland come summertime so that we could go to the Emerson Tennis Week. I have reminded him every year since that time that I was right. We eagerly look forward to our camp week every year. The camp is true luxury and so much fun. Roy Emerson is the pro of all pros. He can assess your game in the first 15 minutes of the first session on Monday morning. He will remember from year to year what your strengths and weaknesses are and will put together instruction that is tailor made for your game. Roy and Joy (Roy’s wife) make you feel so welcome that you will instantly feel at home. It is a camp where you can go as a couple or as a solo traveler and have a great time. It is definitely a camp where if you go once, you will be hooked. I must not omit mentioning that the hotel is incredible, the staff is extraordinary, and the setting is spectacular. Gstaad is about three hours by train from Geneva. You really don’t need a car during your week at the camp. Tennis sessions are from 9:30 to 12:00 and 2:30 to 5:00 every day except Wednesday when the whole camp goes to a lovely mountain top to have a traditional Swiss picnic. This is when I remind my husband how he had never wanted to go to Switzerland. He is getting sick of the reminders.

For ten years I have attended Roy’s and Joy’s Wonderful Week of tennis at the fabulous Gstaad Palace with my doubles partner. It’s something we look forward to all year, starting the day camp ends while we are on our way back to the US. Many of the pros have become personal friends, staying in touch through the years, and the hotel Staff welcomes us back as if they’ve been waiting for us all year. It’s hard to top an experience like that!!!!
EM
Fantastic week! I have been there 5 times adding an extra week each year!! Great coaches, spectacular location the finest of the finest… It is nice to be remember each year by the hotel staff ” welcome home”… Great way to improve your game while meeting people fromm all over the world and having fun. And if you are single do not worry, you are never excluded… Highly recommended!!

Aside from the beautiful backdrop of the Swiss Alps and the idylic town of Gstaad at the 5 star Gstaad Palace, you get top notch tennis instruction by Roy and his team of instructors. Its an intense week of tennis but Roy’s charm permeates through the program. He has created a unique culture at the camp so you find that despite physically pushing yourself through 5 hours of tennis a day, your will also often find yourself laughing and smiling. The spa is an ideal spot to unwind after a long day on the courts — probably one of the best in Europe in my opinion. This was my first tennis camp vacation and I know that I will be returning in 2010. I now understand why over 90% of participants in my week were either returning participants or newbies like me who hope to return. Roy Emerson’s tennis week is a hard habit to break!

When you start with Gstaad, Switzerland, add to it a five star hotel renowned for its food, accomodations, old world service, what more is there to say…? Well, you can talk about Roy Emerson and his family. Roy, his wife Joy, and son and daughter each play a role in making, both your stay in Switzerland, and the tennis, a most memorable experience. I am an above average player, who was unsure that I wanted to participate in what one would believe was a “group” lesson. My fears quickly evaporated. Roy prepares for each class religiously. He knows your name, how you play, and how he can help you. He arranges the groups so you are constantly being challenged. The ratio of instuctors to students is near perfect. I never had a day where I felt cheated of an instuctor’s time. Roy has learned to make a group lesson an “individual” lesson, every day. There wasn’t a day when I didn’t learn something new, or be reminded of a long forgotten way of hitting the ball. This review wouldn’t be complete without mentioning, the “fun” you’ll have learning tennis from Roy. Whether it is the Aussie style or just Roy, you will find yourself laughing with Roy and walking around with a big grin on your face. The only complaint I heard, was on the last day when my many new friends and I, couldn’t believe how fast the week had flown by…I’ll be back!

Five stars! The camp was great and the location is one of the most beautiful in the world.
Roy and Joy Emerson host a fantastic week of tennis coaching and sociability in the unparalleled surroundings of the Gstaad Palace hotel. All standards of play are catered for by the top flight team of coaches and the hotel provides ultimate luxury between sessions. Not to be missed!
Great program in a lovely location. Can’t beat the accommodations, food and staff.
Roy and Joy Emerson run the most amazing tennis camp EVER. The locations is Gstaad Switzerland in the Alps. It is breathtaking beyond the imagination. The staff not to mention the Brilliant tennis lengend Roy Emerson him self is on hand with you every day,, lending his wisdom and lessons of the game. Joy and Roy make an amazing team,, their staff is superb,, teaching the clinics Roy sets up daily. This is among the Swiss Alps and the most glorious hotel in Switzerland,, the Palace Hotel. So,, with the superb food,, ambiance and tennis, one has all they ever hoped for in a tennis vacation. NOT TO BE MISSED
Warning: This week is addictive ! Too much of fresh Swiss air, of superb surroundings, of comforting Spa, of superlative meals & wines… A great tennis experience, the Pros are so competent, and fun too. To top it all you meet very interesting people… So BEWARE !
Great intense tennis clinic under guidance of the legendary Roy Emerson and his enthusiastic tennis staff. The setting in the beautiful Palace Hotel surrounded by mountains is second to none. Food, service and Spa facilities of the hotel are superb. Highly recommend this Tennis Camp!
one of the best weeks i’ve ever had, the Tennis instruction level, the hotel, the food and the group – was great !!!
It is a tenniscourse with a very high level: the course itself has a very high level and the hotel has a very high level.
Excellent week of tennis and relaxation. Very well structured and great group of people
In a nice area, the mountains with good weather, 5 star hotel, with the 5 star lessons of Roy Emerson and his gently pro’s. Is was my 2nd time in Gstaad and I would be there next year.
Joy Emerson adds the final touch of fun and grace to the week, and by the end of the week you feel like you’ve joined a tennis family.
simply put have had a great time.
Paradise, with the best tennis instruction I’ve ever had. I look forward to this tennis week every year. Roy, the pro’s, the participants are all great. The Palace Hotel in Gstaad is truly 5 star.
The mountain scenery is spectacular – and so is the food – but I bet what you will really remember is the wonderful people – the extraordinary hotel staff, the charismatic tennis pros and, in our experience, many of your fellow players.
fantastic scenery, great professional tennis coaches, friendly atmosphere, good food, excellent wine,
This is the ultimate tennis week.
