As the first American location for a Mouratoglou Tennis Center, Horseshoe Bay Resort has raised the bar for resort tennis experiences. Offering coaching and clinics with tennis and pickleball professionals certified in the unique methodology behind Mouratoglou’s global success, resort guests have access to exceptional amenities, services, and exclusive perks. Horseshoe Bay Resort may be set on 7,000 acres of Texas Hill Country real estate once sacred to the Comanche Indians, but there is nothing Lonesome Dove-ish about it.
For one thing, it fronts Lake Lyndon B. Johnson (better known locally as Lake LBJ), a constant-level reservoir of the Colorado River. Thus, here, deep in the heart of Texas, 46 miles from Austin, resort guests and the people who live or weekend there can dig their toes into that rarest of inland features, a beach, fronted by waters that in summer can reach 80 degrees. Admittedly, that strand is a more welcome anomaly than a primary reason to visit. The real draw can be traced to the resort’s 12 tennis courts—6 of them red clay—and 14 pickleball courts arrayed around an Oriental garden, three Robert Trent Jones Sr. 18-hole golf courses, an 18-hole Zoysia grass putting course, a spa and fitness center, a jungle kids’ club, several swimming pools, a collection of colorful exotic birds, hotel or condo lodging, a marina and yacht club (with a beach), and a private jet center.
When it came to the tennis courts, Horseshoe Bay Resort took advantage of that spacious footprint and scattered them around a verdant oriental garden of trees, ponds, sculptures, and wooden walkways, just steps from the hotel. Four red clay border one side of the garden, and four hard can be found on the opposite side, slightly removed from the rest. There are four additional hard courts and 14 pickleball courts a little south of the garden, and then off of their own, in a northern part of the garden are two additional red clay courts partly embraced by the narrow grass fairways of the 18-hole putting course. Out there, you may feel you’re playing on someone’s private courts.
Courts, however appealing, still need programing and that has come at the hands of Israel Castillo, Director of Racquet Sports at the Mouratoglou Tennis Center at Horseshoe Bay. With a rich background that includes 15 years as director at prestigious resorts and clubs, Israel expertly oversees both the tennis and pickleball programs. His infectious enthusiasm for racquet sports and teaching is evident in the culture he has created among the teaching staff at Horseshoe Bay Resort.
Playing a key role in bringing The Mouratoglou Tennis Center to Horseshoe Bay, Castillo traveled to Nice for one-on-one training and certification in the Mouratoglou methodology which is now offered by the full team of international racquet professionals he has assembled, including a head tennis pro and a head pickleball pro. Resort guests and members have access to elevated learning and play through dynamic round-robin play sessions, specialized clinics, and a spectrum of private and group lessons. In addition, there are weekend camps, customized holiday and summer programs, and personalized instruction.
Beyond that, Castillo capitalizes on the rarity of those red-clay courts to stage well-attended tennis tournaments, while similar events for pickleball lure as many as 250 participants for competition on their eight pickleball courts. The latter sport has proven so popular that Castillo hired a dedicated pickleball pro and the the resort has agreed to add an additional 14 pickleball courts. All this comes on the heels of a recent sprucing up of the entire complex, including resurfacing of the hard courts, new fencing, windscreens, awnings, shade structures, and furniture.
Court Complex: There are six red clay and eight hard tennis courts and 14 pickleball courts all set in and around a garden with ponds, bridges, and trees, and sculptures.
Court fees: $25/hour; clay court $30/hour
Off Court
Beach: The Waterfront Beach is the dreamiest retreat for luxury lounging. The sandy beach area offers loungers with umbrellas, two regulation sand volleyball courts, The Shack food truck, a fully stocked Sand Bar, as well as kayak, paddle board and Sea-Doo rentals. But the dreamiest part is floating perfectly on the edge of Lake LBJ, the Waterfront Floating Pool, the only one of its kind in North America. On the deck of the Floating Pool, guests enjoy poolside loungers, or you can upgrade your fun in the sun with a private cabana. All pool deck seating enjoys food and beverage service.
Golf Courses: There are three 18-hole championship golf courses, all designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., and an 18-hole putting course.
Slick Rock: Opened in 1972, and renovated in 2016, this first of the resort’s courses winds through the lush Texas Hill Country’s granite outcrops, native oak, cedar, persimmon, and Eldarica pines. Visual highlight is the so-called “Million Dollar” 14th hole, where the cart path crosses a 35-foot waterfall, making it instantly Instagrammable and gives the front nine a different look and feel from the more open and rolling back nine. Par 72, 6,867 yards.
Ram Rock: Known as the “Challenger,” Ram Rock is by far the most difficult of the three—in fact, readers of the Dallas Morning News have frequently voted it the most difficult in all of Texas. Jones invested it with narrow fairways, natural streams, an abundance of water and sand, rock gardens, granite outcroppings, blind tee shots and all manner of trees, bushes, and plants. Its signature No. 4, an island hole, is said to be tougher than the TPC at Sawgrass. Par 71, 6,926 yards.
Apple Rock: Named “Best New Resort Course in America” by Golf Digest when it opened, Apple Rock follows the contours of some of the most elevated and scenic of Horseshoe Bay’s land. Native oak, elm, and persimmon trees frame the fairways as they cross the rocky terrain, much of it with views of Lake LBJ. Though not especially tight, the course demands well-placed drives and accurate club selection to avoid its 50+ bunkers and sand traps. Par 72, 6,999 yards.
Whitewater: Though a putting course, this 18-hole, par 72 layout is 1,712 yards in length, with Bermuda grass greens bordered by waterfalls and grazing flamingos.
Spa & Fitness Center: The Bayside Spa has 13 treatment rooms offering a range of services including facials, massages, aromatherapy, manicures and pedicures. Both men’s and women’s lounges have saunas, steam rooms, and whirlpools. The Marina Del Bay Movement Studio, which overlooks Lake LBJ, has a full range of cardio and weight-training equipment as well as daily aerobics classes, yoga studios, nutritional programs, and personal trainers. Guests of the hotel have their own fitness center on two floors with windows on a swimming pool and red-clay courts just outside.
The resort has four swimming pools, one of them heated.
The Marina is both home to private boats and to a fleet of luxury rentals, including ski boats with drivers, Sea-Doos, and fishing boats with professional guides.
Children's programs: The Jungle Kids’ Club, a two-story indoor climbing gym and arts and crafts center entertains kids from potty-trained to age 12.
Dining: There are seven restaurants, lounges, and food outlets, headlined by the Waterfront Bar & Grill for seafood and views of the lake. J’s Restaurant and Bar, in the hotel, features barbecue and Texas Hill Country cuisine. comfort food. The Market in the lobby of the hotel has morning pastries, deli sandwiches, ice cream, and Starbuck’s.
Accommodations
Four options: The Tower, a centrally located hotel whose 249 rooms and suites have views of the lake through floor-to-ceiling windows; Palm Villas, 1-to-three-bedroom apartments with kitchenettes or kitchens conveniently located just behind the hotel and adjacent to the tennis courts; The Residences, whose 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom fully equipped condos have gourmet kitchens, high-definition flat-screen televisions, spacious balconies with lake views, washers and dryers, plus for the Signature Residences, concierge services and access to the members-only Yacht Club; and the Private Home Rentals, as large as four bedrooms and situated in various locations throughout the resort.

For arrival from Austin International Airport, the resort is a quick 59-mile drive through the scenic Texas Hill Country. For regional travel, the Mouratoglou Tennis Center at Horseshoe Bay Resort is a short drive from vibrant cities including Austin, Houston, San Antonio and Dallas.
Not worth the money. We did not like the format. It’s fine to mix in 3.0 to 4.0 for a few drills, but when you do match plays, you need to put people in their respective ranking groups. One of my friend who is a 4.0 had 2 hours of match play on the last day with a 3.0 playing against 2 other 3.0 so what is the value of that for my 4.0 friend? would have been so much more instrumental if they had a dedicated coach for each court where you get constant feedback vs the 4 coaches walking around constantly. Certainly, they had some great advice and instructions but just not enough based on the format. Shout out to Alex who gave the best advice and tips to me personally.

We recently took a trip to Horsehoe Bay with a group of ladies from our local tennis team. We couldn’t recommend it more.
The tennis facilities are beautiful with wind guards and beautiful new branding with the Mouratoglou logo. There is a small tennis shop with cute clothes. And there is the cutest resident dog on the courts.
We stayed in the new signature condos which were beautiful and walking distance away from the courts. There were several restaurants to choose from for lunch and dinner, and a little hotel shop with coffee and to go snacks.
The best part of the trip was 100% the tennis coaching. We had the pleasure of working with Israel and Elliott. Both were wonderful. So personable, friendly and helpful. They took the time out to get to know each of us, both personally and as a tennis player. They worked with us in pairs, fours, and individually on strokes and technique. They also taught us drills we could easily implement at home.
We chose to do the written review at the end of our camp, which came via email. I don’t think this is necessary. They give you lots of feedback during the training sessions, and the review was basically just a recap of this.
All and all, can not recommend enough. Go!

I would suggest checking out this resort and tennis program for those looking to hone in on specific skills to improve their game. I attended multiple sessions over multiple days and found each one was unique and very enjoyable.
Israel and Elliot were extremely knowledgeable and passionate about tennis. The extra care they took with our sessions in teaching us was amazing.
Definitely excited to go back to Horseshoe Bay!

I recently had the pleasure of attending Horseshoe Bay with a group of tennis girlfriends and I must say, it was an unforgettable experience for any one who loves tennis. We enjoyed all of the amenities during our stay, including the pools, hot tubs, and a great selection of restaurants on-site. One of the standout features of this resort was undoubtedly the coaching staff. Our two coaches, Israel and Elliot, were incredibly knowledgeable and demonstrated their expertise in tennis from the very first session. Their passion for the game was evident, and they successfully created an inviting atmosphere where players of all skill levels felt comfortable and excited to learn.
What impressed me the most was how both coaches took the time to get to know each participant individually. They assessed our skill levels, listened to our goals, and tailored their coaching styles to suit our needs. This personalized approach made a huge difference in my learning experience, as it allowed for focused practice and constructive feedback that genuinely helped improve my game.
Each session was filled with a combination of drills, match play, and instructional feedback, which kept things lively and engaging. I particularly appreciated how the coaches incorporated fun into every lesson, turning what could have been tedious basics into enjoyable challenges. Their energy and enthusiasm were contagious, making our sessions an absolute blast. We are already looking forward to returning next year!

Wonderful Experience!
Horseshoe Bay was a great destination for our ladies tennis group. We enjoyed the amenities of the resort, restaurants and hot tub when we were off the courts. We had access to the yacht club; restaurant, pool, hot tub and beach which were beautiful. The tennis was the highlight of our stay! Israel and Elliott were wonderful; a wealth of knowledge providing constructive feedback. Their ability to analyze our individual styles/techniques, provide feedback and adjustments in a personalized way was amazing! We had so much fun, the days flew by! We really appreciated their flexibility in working around weather to get all of our clinic hours in. We now have an added perspective of the game that resonates with each of us, leaving with strategies and tools to enhance our game. We can’t wait to return!

I came to the resort with some friends of mine from my tennis team and we were blown away . We had an amazing and very personal experience from the moment we arrived . The tennis camp was a 3 day affair but the first day was cancelled due to rain. Israel the director told us right away not to worry that we could make up the time we missed which we did . He offered to meet with us that evening to go over the weekend plans and we spent a pleasant happy hour chatting with him . Saturday we started our tennis camp and it was top notch from start to finish. Elliot was the tennis pro we were with all weekend long but Israel made sure to continuously stop in to check on us thru the camp and would give us pointers as well . We learned everything from dynamic stretching to new revolutionary techniques and suggestions. Elliot our assigned pro was from Belgium and had played division one college tennis and had also done pro tournaments. He was very personal and professional and insightful as to what we needed to work on. Both mornings it was damp the night before so we got to try out the resort’s clay courts. Which were great ! They felt more forgiving on your joints . We brought extra shoes to use on clay but in reality it wasn’t as messy as I expected . When I played on clay courts in Latin America , it was so dusty and messy but because they were taking care of the courts ( apparently clay should be watered every so often – I had no idea! ) they were less messy . They really just got your shoes a little dirty instead of that total mess I was used to on clay . On Sunday at the end of our time with Elliot and Israel, we sat down off the courts and they recapped the main points of what we had learned. The next day they followed up with a recap of the weekend with individual pointers which I loved . We can’t wait to go back! One last thing to mention is that it did not feel competitive which I was a little nervous about . It felt like everyone was a die hard tennis fan and just wanted to learn and improve! Everyone got along really well!! We really could not have asked for more ! Also the resort is gorgeous . We had some great meals and enjoyed the pool and hot tub when we weren’t playing tennis .

I left a review raving about the excellent instruction and facility, but I forgot to mention the Clay courts! They are well-maintained and gorgeous — and gave us the option of playing when it was wet outside. They were absolutely incredible to play on and I highly recommend to all! We also loved playing on the hard courts, which is what we’re more accustomed to. Bring extra shoes for the Clay in case it’s dusty.

Excellence! My tennis girls and I spent the weekend in bliss at Horseshoe Bay. The tennis experience was top notch. We all left with a refreshed view on our technique and strategy. Elliot was a delight. Professional, and very attuned to what each player needs. He knows how to provide just enough feedback to inspire change, without overloading. The rest of the resort is stunning! Enjoy!!

I had the greatest experience at our tennis camp with Israel and his team. I learned a ton and was able to think about aspects of my game that I hadn’t considered before. I couldn’t recommend this program more!!

I recently attended a weekend tennis camp with Israel and staff and had the absolute best time. More than that, I left a better tennis player. It was VERY VERY hot when we attended and the staff was SO personable and so locked in, and I never once even felt the heat. It was amazing instruction with two instructors that were not pre occupied on their phones or frantically rushing us to hurry on to the next lesson. As a player who averages playing three times a week, we are not beginner players, and this camp was certainly a confidence booster and allowed me to return to Dallas with a lot of great insight in to my specific game vs brand, generalized instruction/advice. I would absolutely return to play more tennis at this weekend adult camp and recommend this without reservation to anyone looking to further their game. ADORABLE, PRECIOUS court puppy was an added bonus.

The Mouratoglou tennis center at horseshoe bay is my favorite place for tennis. As a member, I have always had fabulous lessons from Israel and his team. He was able to identify small issues with my preparation/swing and modify which made a huge difference to my overall play.
This fall I brought my tennis team to the adult tennis camp. The content of the 3 day camp was fabulous!! We had Israel and Elliot as our instructors. They were exceptional at overall teaching, drills, pace of play, etc. Our entire team was grateful for the coaching we received. We are a picky group when it comes to instructors but I cannot recommend this program enough. Each session focused on a different area of play (baseline, net play, doubles strategy, etc). I hope our team can do this camp each fall to prepare for our season.
Also, the courts are beautiful and the pro shop has great rackets/shoes if you are in need. Highly recommend if you are trying to get to the next level in your tennis game!

This is the second time I’ve played on these clay courts, and they are by far the worst I’ve experienced. The first time, I was placed on Court 1, and it felt like they forgot to turn off the sprinklers. The surface was lumpy, and every push-off felt like I was digging holes in the court. The balls bounced unpredictably, and if my opponent got lucky, the ball would just roll instead.
For the second round, I specifically requested one of the front courts (6-10) but was again placed on Court 1.
This year, it was the same issue. I could tell how poorly maintained they were just by looking at how dirty the balls were after a few minutes. Courts 6-10 were slightly better but still far from acceptable. Playing through a constant drizzle and navigating holes all over the court made it a disappointing experience. The baseline was so caked with muddy clay that it was near impossible to see.

Elliot was a knowledgeable and personable instructor. I felt short changed on serve, backhand , and foot work instruction. I would have preferred less game playing time and more time to instruction and drills

Wow! What an awesome experience all around. Israel, the Director, and his staff are top notch. Fantastic instruction with the perfect combination of fun, great drills, technical instruction and a beautiful facility! We also played pickleball…14 dedicated pickleball courts. This was a perfect weekend for our USTA team.

My tennis team went down for the weekend to do an adult tennis camp and it was AMAZING! The instructor to player ratio was perfect (4:1) and despite varying levels within the group, we were given actionable tips, clear explanations of strategy/why and left with a short list of areas to focus. Isreal, Madison, Rebecca and Alex are all top-notch and we are counting down the days until we get to come back and do it all over again. Highly recommend!

I have attended the tennis package/weekends several times and each one has been an outstanding experience! Israel Castillo, the tennis director, is an exceptional tennis instructor and facilitator.
