There is a lot of shouting going on in the Billabong Bar. Some 60 of us have turned up at Newk’s Tennis Ranch on a balmy October weekend, and after introductions to the pros, an hour of lively drills, and a dinner of steak, salmon, scalloped potatoes, sautéed vegetables, salad, and chocolate cake we’ve reconvened in the bar, divided now into two groups, Team Australia and Team USA, for a pep talk with our respective captains and camp co-directors, Chris Jacques and Mitch Joyce.
The actual Davis Cup-style competition won’t take place until tomorrow when we gather as teams in two separate bleachers to cheer on our respective captains and their partners in a pro doubles exhibition. Tonight, however, we’re being introduced to the fine art of “barracking,” which consists chiefly of shouting loudly to support your team coupled with hurling insults at the opponents. And for those of us on Team Australia that also means a rehearsal of the classic cheer: “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oy, Oy, Oy.” The team meetings over, many of us grab a drink at the bar and head outside to a pavilion and firepit for s’mores, entertainment by the Grand Slams—an informal band comprised of several of the pros—and a chance to get to know more of our fellow campers.
They don’t make tennis camps like Newk’s tennis ranch anymore. It is the last of a breed, a vestige of the tennis-boom era when days of banging balls were followed by nights of hanging out with the pros and new-found tennis mates. Everybody played together all day and then gathered together again for dinner, merry-making, and maybe a beverage, and entertaining one another with songs, stories, and conversation. The unwritten assumption was that anyone who loved tennis enough to spend five hours a day doing drills must be worth getting to know.
Former world No. 1 John Newcombe opened the ranch in 1968 with former Trinity University coach Clarence Mabry. Much of the teaching methodology continues to be based on the techniques Newk learned from legendary Australian Davis Cup coach Harry Hopman and on those Mabry employed when he helped launch the careers of Dick Stockton, Brian Gottfried, and Chuck McKinley. As principal owner, Newk spends as much as six weeks a year at the Ranch, including two Fantasy events (see Calendar below. Historic photos and magazine covers of Newk decorate the walls of the main lodge, as do posters of Australia. His influence permeates the camp.
The property was, in Newk’s words “a run-down dude ranch,” when he and Mabry first looked at it, but its location in the Texas Hill Country, 20 miles north of San Antonio and 30 miles south of Austin, appealed to Newk who wanted a retreat from the circuit when he was in the U.S. Today the ranch has 31 courts, four of them indoors and another four that are clay. The original ranchhouse has a pro shop, dining room with tables for eight or more, and the Billabong Bar. Behind the ranchhouse stretches a terraced deck with picnic tables in the shade of several large live oaks—a camper favorite for lunch on pleasant days—just steps from an outdoor swimming pool and hot tub. From there it is a short stroll to the adult accommodations, which consist of a mixed bag of rooms, cottages, casitas, and one- and two-bedroom condos. As the ranch has grown, so has the town of New Braunfels, so the spread no longer feels so rural and isolated as it did when I first visited—particularly given that John Newcombe Estates, a housing development and country club, has spring up on the adjacent 200 acres. Still, I surprised a couple of deer on campus as I walked to breakfast one morning and another camper spotted a javelina.
Phil Hendrie has been the Director of Tennis for the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch for the past 40+ years, overseeing both the adult and junior programs. Throughout his time at the Ranch he has coached players such as Lleyton Hewitt, Li Na, Michael Venus, Nicole Melichar, Ryan Harrison, and many more. He also has a high success rate of getting young players college scholarships. Phil heads up a staff of more than a dozen tennis professionals including Stephen Rogers and Max McDulin, the Directors of Adult Tennis.
Tennis Programs: In the adult camps, each day begins with a basic overview of the strokes on the day's agenda, generally focused on basics of technique. From there it's out to the courts and a mixture of drills, half of them with the pro doing the feeding, the other half live ball sessions, pitting campers against each other or one or more pros. There is often one or more pros who rove, pulling aside individual campers for specific advice on improving a particular stroke. Each of the morning and afternoon sessions lasts 2½ to 3 hours and often conclude with some sort of informal doubles competition. Midweek sessions add videotaping to the mix.
Court Complex: 27 hard courts (4 covered) and 4 Har-Tru courts
Court fees: None
Off Court
Fitness Center: Although it is hard to imagine why anyone who spends 5 hours on court would feel the need for a fitness center, the Ranch does in fact have one in a cinderblock building near the covered courts, principally intended for the full-time junior academy students but available to adults who feel a need for it. It has the usual weight machines and Cardio equipment along with a battery of devices intended for tennis specific exercises, including medicine balls and balance platforms. It may also come into play, as it did during my visit, in the case of rain, sending part of the group to the covered courts, part to the fitness center for an overview of tennis-specific exercises. There is no spa; however, there is a massage therapist on call.
Accommodations
Campers can choose from a variety of accommodations, all clustered around or near the courts. These range from simple rooms with two double beds to one- and two-bedroom condos, the latter with fireplaces, full kitchens, and washer-dryers.
Getting there
Seasons: Year-round with the lowest rates available from November through February.
Travel Instructions: By air: The nearest airports are San Antonio, roughly 30 minutes to the south, and Austin, roughly 45 minutes to the north. By Car: The ranch is on Highway 46 in New Braunfels, Texas. From San Antonio, take I-35 North to Loop 337. Exit and turn left following Loop 337 to Highway 46 West. Exit, turn left (west), and drive approximately 2 miles then turn left at the large water tower marked "Newks Resort." Follow the signs to the Main Lodge.
Great experience. Not only did I enjoy the team spirit and the drills, I know that I left with enough new knowledge that my game will improve. I also feel that all of the pros were very professional and a joy to be around. I hope our paths cross again. I will spread the word that this is something all tennis enthusiasts should experience.

My family and I had an unforgettable time at the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch! No matter what your age and level this place really adapts well. It is not a 5 star resort. Newks is rustic, clean, and they have made some great upgrades that reallyhelps maintain the charm yet Iincreases the comfortable. We have been 3 times and have always had a great work out. Instruction customer service and the food are first class! competively no matter what your age the pros were experts in match you with the right player for you to work on your new strokes. The pros would mold their teaching tecniques to the individual helping us to feel comfortable to learn so much more. They made it fun even o the toughest drills. The clincs were 5 hours a day, but we were able to select our package to our vacation plans. The food was excellent! And the variety was impressive! We have made lasting relationships here and learned how to keep learning more at home! The pros took care to make sure we knew that our tennis centres back home are soimportant to the process, since they work with us day in and day out! So they were actually promoting our clubs back home! They ran a tournament the week we were there called, ” Get Newked” I this event they had 100 kids hitting cone targets and playing champion challenger games in teams! We had never seen kids get so fired up. It took 2 hours while the spectators looked on. The pros started a camp fire and offered smores to everybody. They told us they were gonna take this tournament round the state to promote tennis! A rock solid tennis camp! Thank you Newks! For all awesomely aussie experiences!

Our entire team of 10 had a terrific time at Newk’s. Chris, Mitch, and Adrian, along with their amazing pros and staff, were funny, energetic, and very insightful on ways to improve our game. The condos were clean and comfortable. We had such a great time we’ve decided to make it an annual trip!
CN
I went to the John Newcombe Ranch on a last minute trip to get away from the cold. I went for a week long adult camp right before their fantasy weekend and lucked out because there was only three of us in the group! We had 2 instructors every day and I was able to play singles against a pro every day. The amount of one on one attention I got from the pros alone made this trip worth it financially for me. Their insight and video analysis has been instrumental to my game improving. The entire staff from the kitchen to maintenance to the teaching staff were all very friendly and always happy to help. They even stay in touch and interested in how you are doing after you leave the ranch. Their amenities are very basic but if you are there for a tennis program, it is plenty. I never left the ranch once. I would suggest this camp to anyone who wants to take a trip specifically for tennis. It is a lot of time on the court but it is a lot of fun and well worth it. I am already planning on coming back this fall!
BP
Overall, a group of five of us had a terrific time at Newk’s. The pros were great – good-humored, insightful, friendly, and motivating. The grounds were well maintained and our two-bedroom condo was nice in a rustic way. We’d definitely go back again.
DL
This was a great experience! I have gone for the weekend, and weeklong camps, the Pros are Aussie Awesome! It has definately improved my game….food, fun, atmosphere and great tennis! Highly recommended 🙂
MM
Newks Tennis Ranch is absolutely the best adult tennis academy around. Every time I’ve visit the Ranch, I always know it will be a funfilled week of tennis, laughing, dancing and fun! Chris (and Sal when he was there)and Adrienne and Mitch are fantastic as Directors. They teach you the skills you need to continue to improve your game at any level you might play. I will forever be a regular at Newks. They are an all around wonderful experience.
JW
Fun place to go with anyone who loves tennis as much as you do. We went with teammates, which is a great bonding experience, but it’d be just as much fun with a friend or a your spouse. Be prepared for playing a LOT!
KM
lovely tennis camp, engaged and encouraging professionals, plenty of court time and off-court fun, individualized instruction, comfortable accommodations and satisfying meals, great value for the dollar!
BH
Best value for the money. A fun getaway for the gals.
RM
Best camp experience I’ve ever had. The most fun place on earth to play tennis, in my opinion. Everyone’s like family and every time you go, you get better, no matter what. It’s awesome!
ML
Here you can have fun and work your tennis, it’s great because even when you’re working hard and improving you don’t feel like it’s too much work because of the great motivation you get from the pros. It’s a great place to make friends that are literally for life, even if you are a shy kind of person, everyone is so friendly and welcoming that you forget about all that and just have fun, make friends and work hard. These people are family. You wont find a better place. Newks is home away from home.
TH
We are a tennis family – father advanced, mother intermediate, and 10 year old junior player. Newks Ranch had something to offer for each of us. We were there over Christmas break and had a fabulous time. Mitch and Adrian led the adult program. Their energy level and knowledge of the game was very impressive. They found a way to keep all levels busy and pleased. The food was very good with a wonderful kitchen staff. The complex is well laid out with a nice pool and hot tub. The condos are well located with nice balconies overlooking the courts. The condos are dated, but fine for the purpose. Our condo had a cool loft. In the evenings, the adults enjoyed socializing at the bar. Our daughter loved the juniors program and she enjoyed staying in the dorm style accommodations with other kids.

The John Newcombe Tennis ranch is the best place, for tennis and having a great time as well, that I have been to in my life. I highly recommend this ranch.
RW
I have been to Newk’s several times and each time has been a blast! The first time I went was right as I was learning and they showed me so many things that helped me develop my game. During my most recent visit, I was one of the stronger players and the staff worked to make sure I got the instruction I needed as well as some strong match play. If you are interested (and still have some energy left), see about getting one of the guys to give you a private lesson. I highly recommend Newk’s to anyone who enjoys playing tennis. The focus is on the game, but there is a very strong social and fun aspect as well. The food is always delicious and plentiful and after they’ve worked you out, you are definitely ready for a good meal. There is a range of lodging from resort-style to more rustic sumer camp-style, so be sure you know which you are signing up for. A trip to Newk’s is also one of the most cost-effective ways of enjoying yourself and working on your game.
KK
Pat and I would like to give kudos to the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch staff that richly deserve them. Specifically: Sal, Chris and Adrian were excellent, personable instructors and meal-mates. We have returned home with much better tennis techniques which we are dutifully practicing. Our friends here in Malibu are very impressed with our improvement. We could not be happier with this fantastic “down-home” tennis ranch. This is our second time attending Newks and highly recommend it for true tennis enthusiasts.

My wife and I attended for a weekend session. Based on the reviews here, we were wonderfuly surprised & pleased with the accomidations. They were somewhat spartan, but clean, comfortable, and right next to the courts! A real plus was the washer & dryer in unit… The tennis instruction was phenominal. Chris, Sal and Adrian were all fantastic. Upon departing I was quite sad, as I remarked to my wife, “there is a lot more tennis I can learn here”. Two small demerits. At the end of the first day one of the women in our small group of 9 asked one of the pro’s “If there was one thing you could change about each of our game, what would it be?” I expected a fluffy generic answer. This guy went through each person and gave an amazingly tailored response. Everybody was just wide eyed and nodding as the knowledge came forth…until it came to me…when my turn came he confessed he hadn’t seen my game enough. (this was while we were drinking the beer he had just brought out in a cooler for us…so really, I was still very happy). The other demerit would be more on me. The last of the 3 sessions over the weekend were serve/return. I had been looking forward to the serve piece all weekend..well…for weeks really. The group we were with was struggling with slice serves/conti grip, so that was where the serve time was spent. I’d been hoping for the time to take my serve to another level, but recived reinforcement for something I was already comfortable with. Bad on me for not raising my hand and saying “this is not what I want, I want this…”. Two small demerits…and a trunk full of kudos. The best tennis instruction I have ever received. More eye opening comments/critiques than I have ever experienced. My groundstrokes are better, my volley is massively improved. My wife and I are -talking- tennis to each other! I am already negotiating with my wife on when we can go back for a full week. That could not be any higher compliment..I want to do business with Newk’s again, giving them both my dollars, and more importantly to me, my time.

John Newcombe Tennis Ranch is the best place for me and my team to interact and have a ball with one another. There is something for all of us with its outstanding combination of fun social time and exceptional tennis instruction. Counting the days until we get to come again next spring!!
DA
I had the best time at the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch this past Feb. ! It was my first visit to the Ranch, along with my whole tennis team. We loved the Pro’s, and their staff! All of them gave great technique advice. And of which I took home and used to improve my game! We will be back for more learning and drills! A big thanks to them all!!
MH
Newk’s NEVER disappoints! The tennis instruction is great thanks to the best pros in the south. It is a great way to spend a weekend if you are a tennis fan. All levels of players are welcome and the pros make sure you get the appropriate instruction for any level you play. The food is excellent too! If you have never been to Newk’s you’ve gotta go and if it’s been a while since you’ve been it’s time to go back!
BT
I was so impressed with the weekend camp at Newks. Even though it rained most of the time, we didn’t feel like we missed anything because of the covered courts and the enthusiasm of the pros. Sal is such a talented and fun pro! He does a great job keeping the drills exciting and educational, has a great rapport with the other coaches, and also is very entertaining… great sense of humor! It was a weekend I will never forget and can’t wait to go back!
MA
I love Newks! What a great tennis experience. I’ve been twice. The first time I was a relatively inexperienced player and then 4 years later with a little better skill set. Both experiences were outstanding. The pros are professional yet fun and honest. I walked away with new skills, a tan, and a few new friends. What more could you ask for? Oh, and if the tennis development program kids are there you can see some of the best young talent in the world playing! The rooms are sparse but clean and comfortable (you are there for the tennis, right?). The downtime is fun. I was there with a big group the first time and a small group the second. Both times the staff managed to make the evenings a blast. I would highly recommend Newks to those looking for a great tennis experience but not a spa:) I loved it and am working on the plans for my next trip!
MM
This is the third time I have been to Newks and I come back because I feel for the price it is good value. The food is home cooked buffet style and there is always plenty. The accommodation might not be five star but the rooms are clean and for the time that you spend in them are just fine. The tennis pros work really hard to make sure there is enough drills to keep even the most addicted tennis players happy. Groups are kept small enough so that you get to hit a good number of balls and the pros are very happy to help correct your strokes and answer questions. ‘ Evening entertainment at the bar is fun and often can continue quite late. Great value but not for those looking for a five star resort … It is all about the tennis!
RR
wonderful pros that you spend even meals and evenings with which to me makes all the difference in a tennis camp. The instruction is wonderful and fun always, and the extra interaction with the pros and staff makes Newks my New York family’s favorite tennis resort. Team family team! Food is great too. One weakness perhaps, is sometimes they can use bigger hoppers for the balls…but it isn’t a big deal.
DS
I went with my sisters team for experience and to learn tips to improve our game. Team drills were excellent and the individual tips help during play. The all around instructions with all the Pros definately help each and every one of us. We came home eager to apply all what we learned and tried to implement everything. We will return next year because it was vey helpful and a warm family oriented facility. All the staff were just wonderful
TH
Just finished a 2 day Tennis Clinic/Camp with Adrian. WOW! Was so impressed!!!! He was awesome ! I highly recommend him. Facilities and meals were wonderful. It’s nice to see so many friendly smiling faces!!!!! Would go back tomorrow, even if the weather was 104 degrees!!
DH
Just finished our first weekend adult tennis camp, and my husband and I had a wonderful time. Great tennis instruction and lots of great tennis drills covering a multitude of skills. All the pros were awesome, and Sal, the Director, did a great job organizing the event and keeping everyone pumped up! The cost can’t be beat for this experience. The price included all tennis instruction, accommodations, and meals. My husband and I are at different levels of play, but we both felt challenged during the drills and play opportunities. The ratio of pros to players was excellent, allowing alot of inividual instruction to improve specific skills. We both feel that our games will improve as a result of attending this weekend, and we look forward to coming back in the future!!
AM
My second time in a weeklong progam at Newk’s and it was wonderful. The pros put a lot of attention in meeting our expectations. They focus on the most important correction to make to improve the stroke a lot. Thank you, Sal and Justin. The overall setting, green contryside with big trees, make it a very relaxing and pleaseant stay.
TF
Another super week at Newk’s. It’s was my third year experience and it was still perfect. Got lots of drill and lots of advises to improve my strokes. Thanks a whole lot to Sal, and Justin, the pros I worked with. They really get involved and give their best to make tennis and stay very enjoyable. Actually, the whole staff make it a nice and pleasant stay. A wonderful vacation for tennis lovers.
JR
I love this place. It feels like a second home to me and my family. The coaching staff is exceptional. They go out of their way to work on your specific game and to keep everyone’s interest level high. I attended camp for a weekend last summer and it was an incredible workout. Best of all the coaches continue to stay in touch with their guests and show an real interest in hearing how their games have improved.
MH
I have taken a lot of tennis drills over the years. The great thing was that I did drills that weekend, that were completely new to me! Loved that! The teaching pros were just that, professional, yet so much fun! We did a lot of laughing during our time there!!
HK
My trip to the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch (“Newk’s”) earlier this month was the first destination tennis clinic vacation I’ve taken, and I had a great time. I went with one of my tennis teammates, and we really enjoyed ourselves. For the price I paid in the mid-$300 range for a weekend tennis camp, I received almost 12 hours of on-court time and related instruction, six meals, lodging, and a whole lot of fun. Sal and Chris, the two top tennis instructors, did a great job leading the group and were very effective in getting their points across and demonstrating what they were teaching. They also were very socially engaging chaps who seemed genuinely interested in making the whole tennis camp experience a fun and unique one for each person there. I also was impressed with the other pros who assisted Sal and Chris — all of them were helpful, engaged, personable, and did a great job of remembering people’s names. The pro to camper ratio was 4:1 the entire time we were there, and that was impressive. The live ball drills we did were the most fun and effective teaching tools of all, and the corresponding match play was great because we had the opportunity to put into practice the techniques we had just learned in the drills. There was a nice mix of campers at Newk’s, as well. There were entire tennis teams in attendance, as well as older couples, and people who flew in to go to camp solo. Sal and Chris did a nice job of setting up tennis mixers to help us meet each other. The general dining set-up (noted below) also contributed to guests socializing with each other. On the Saturday evening we were there, the staff actually hired a DJ and Karaoke set-up (which I guess they are known for), and a number of people let loose at the mic and on the dance floor. Sal, who is an accomplished and talented guitarist, also treated us to a “Name that Tune” competition prior to things heating up on the dance floor. When it’s all said and done, one thing’s for sure about the Newk’s experience…you work hard on the courts and you play hard afterwards (or if you’re like me, you play hard in spirit because you’re so bloody tired from being on the courts for eight hours in the sun earlier in the day)! 🙂 The food was plentiful and healthy and generally tasty — it was set up buffet style and people could come and go as they pleased. I would recommend more fresh fruit in the morning, but that’s really my only critique on that end. Also, the lodging was fine — mind you, I didn’t go into this trip thinking I was jetting off the to Four Seasons for some R&R. The suite I stayed in actually had a small kitchenette and living room and my friend and I had plenty of room to spread out and relax a bit between tennis and dining and socializing. I would recommend that the resort invest in longer beds, though. My bed was comfortable, but my feet literally hung over the edge of the bed a bit. I would definitely recommend Newk’s as a destination tennis resort/camp. I plan to go back next year with several more of my current teammates, and I have no doubt I’ll learn something new and keep improving my game as a result. Keep up the good work, Newk’s!
JS
I’ve been doing a week-long session at Newk’s once a year since 2007. Great experience each time. Instructors and staff are super-friendly. A week with Sal will really improve your game if you take his suggestions to heart. Recommend staying for the week and then visiting nearby Austin on the weekend for a complete Texas experience. I only wish Mayleen Ramey had been there the same week I was.
HG
Its great atmosphere and great staff! Its just awesome
MC
The John Newcombe Tennis Ranch is the perfect place to go at any time of the year. The drills and the pros are great, and the place feels like home it is perfect nothing better than this place!
RF
It was the best week of my life!! The instruction was phenomenal! My skill level greatly increased and by the end of the week, I couldn’t get back to show my USTA team what I’d learned. Sal and Mitch not only were excellent teachers, but made every session fun and challenging. The accomodations were beautifully outfitted and the beds and pillows heavenly. Each day the rooms was spotlessly cleaned. The food at every meal was amazing. The staff, from the front desk personnel to the grounds maintenance to the kitchen staff, everyone was so friendly and polite and professional. I was treated as if my father owned the place. It was exactly what you would hope to encounter on a week vacation. I can’t wait to return and I highly recommend EVERYONE to visit Newk’s. Again I say, it was the best week of my life!! You definitely won’t be sorry you came.
SB
Newks is awesome, the greatest tennis learning experience of my life. The atmosphere is fun and energetic, the staff is top-notch tennis enthusiasts that get you excited about the game. Your game is gaurneteed the improve and you’ll have fun doing it. Highlight of my year is attending Newks!
TW
I attended with my team in Jan. 2011!! It was awesome. We woke up every day and played all day. To wake up and see all those courts off of our balcony was a dream!! I am a beginner older adult (late 40s) and wish I did not have to leave!! The instructors work with you and fit your needs! And they are fun too. I am definitely going back, (I hope soon) and bringing my husband with me!!
DG
I attended Newk’s Fantasy Camp in March for the second time. Along with my tennis team, we spent several hours each day on the tennis court doing drills, as well as match play. Playing a fantasy Match with John Newcombe and the rest of the legends was quite a thrill and privilege. The ranch Pros provide an enthusiastic, fun approach to the game and are truly invested in making sure the player’s needs are met. The resort itself is clean, the hard and clay courts are well kept, and the food is delish! I will definitely be back!
JJ
Great experience! Helps your overall game improve. Great staff, good tips and goo fun!
LV
This is an amazing place to visit and where to improve your Tennis game. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and so much fun! They will ensure you have a weekend you will remember forever! I’ve been there twice and I’m planning on going back next year. My friends and I have decided to make it an annual trip. Do not think about it too much, just call and register. This place has very decent prices and you’ll get all the atention and instruction needed to raise your level of Tennis. It is a must!
CD
This has been my third year coming to Newks and every year it gets better. We started coming as a girls group and now we have included our husbands and they loved it as well. You will get some of the best tennis of your life. Sal and Chris are fantastic coaches and know how to improve YOUR game and what you need for personal improvement and not just giving you generic tips. The food is healthy and very delicious. The nights are filled with lots of fun and dancing. If you want to go off the ranch and see the sights, the New Braunfels area has lots of great places to visit. Or, just chill by the pool and relax in your downtime. When you come to Newks, you train hard, play hard and can’t wait to come back for another great weekend of tennis!
CV
Pleasant and very clean accomodations (dated decor but nice). Camps have excellent Instruction, good Food and a fun time. Great place for a family that enjoys playing and learning more about Tennis (combination of junior and adult camps makes it fun for everyone), As long as you enjoy having fun on and off the court. The pro’s and staff are great (Sal, Jacques and the whole crew) are there not only to teach but also to make the time fun.
GC
Attended the Fantasy CoEd Camp March 2011. Strengths were a more high level of player attends these camps. Competition quite a bit higher than the normal week camps or weekend camps. Weakness’ for me was more match play than drills, but just took in stride. Awesome camp to meet LEGENDS of tennis.
M(
Strengths: I am a 3.5/4.0 player and playing for several years, I have been in classes, clinics and other camps, and I can tell when the instruction is good or great and this one was GREAT! Plus the friendly environment. Weaknesses: I would create like a small tournament every day so we could put in practice what we learned right away!
KM
When I return from a trip to John Newcombe Tennis Ranch (have been three times)…I’m fired up because I play much better in my local USTA league matches. The camp was a great challenge. All the pros were personable and made tennis so fun but they were serious about enhancing what I do well in addition to improving my weaknesses. Chris Jacques is my favorite pro. He quickly assessed and accurately described movements/actions to take to improve my serve. His recommendations have made my serve better. The staff and pros are great and very accommodating. I look forward to many more trips to John Newcombe Tennis Ranch!
JS
This resort offered everything that I ever needed out of a tennis resort. The coaching (Chris Jacques, Sal Barbaro) was superb in all matters. They could key down on ones weakness and ones strengths to help improve me as a player. I was able to test out my improved strokes by testing them on many of the strong players that they had to offer. Although it was easy to get lost in all of the great scenery weaving through the resort. It was a breeze recieving the help on my game that I needed. My game was not the only thing that needed improvement, I needed an up-scale vacation. The hospitable room allowed me to relax in lesure, and being able to meet new people is always a strong point. All of the guests, tennis staff, and work staff all had great attitudes while I made myself at home. This was one of the best tennis and social expieriences that I have ever had, and you deffinately get your money’s worth.
FJ
My expirience at the ranch was AMAZING! I improved so much the summer I went, I felt really comfortable with the teachers, like Chris, Phil, & all the counselors I had an amazing summer thanks to them. The place it’s really beautiful withh all the nature without taking out everything we need & the greatest part of it is that you get to learn having fun which I think is one of the most important things, enjoy this wonderful sport.
CL
Newk’s strengths, that keep us coming back again and again, are the quality of instruction, hours on court, and the great staff. Chris Jacques in particular is just great, and so accommodating. The food is healthy and good, and the location in the hill country is ideal.
CB
Wow! Newks is a great Tennis Academy!! The staff is very friendly, you feel like you have know Chris and Sal like they were your best buddies since the begining!! i love how everyone participates and the pro staff really teaches you is stead of just feeding you balls they help you out with YOUR game and make it the best they can. This is a Top Tennis facility and i would recomend to any tennis fan to plan some sort of trip to New Braunfels Texas to check it out. Veryyyyy worth it. :):)

Overall, a group of five of us had a terrific time at Newk’s. The pros were great – good-humored, insightful, friendly, and motivating. The grounds were well maintained and our two-bedroom condo was nice in a rustic way. We’d definitely go back again.
This was a great experience! I have gone for the weekend, and weeklong camps, the Pros are Aussie Awesome! It has definately improved my game….food, fun, atmosphere and great tennis! Highly recommended 🙂
Fun place to go with anyone who loves tennis as much as you do. We went with teammates, which is a great bonding experience, but it’d be just as much fun with a friend or a your spouse. Be prepared for playing a LOT!
lovely tennis camp, engaged and encouraging professionals, plenty of court time and off-court fun, individualized instruction, comfortable accommodations and satisfying meals, great value for the dollar!
Best value for the money. A fun getaway for the gals.
Best camp experience I’ve ever had. The most fun place on earth to play tennis, in my opinion. Everyone’s like family and every time you go, you get better, no matter what. It’s awesome!
A real plus was the washer & dryer in unit…
The tennis instruction was phenominal.
Great value but not for those looking for a five star resort … It is all about the tennis!
wonderful pros that you spend even meals and evenings with which to me makes all the difference in a tennis camp. The instruction is wonderful and fun always, and the extra interaction with the pros and staff makes Newks my New York family’s favorite tennis resort. Team family team! Food is great too. One weakness perhaps, is sometimes they can use bigger hoppers for the balls…but it isn’t a big deal.
I have taken a lot of tennis drills over the years. The great thing was that I did drills that weekend, that were completely new to me! Loved that! The teaching pros were just that, professional, yet so much fun! We did a lot of laughing during our time there!!
Its great atmosphere and great staff! Its just awesome
The John Newcombe Tennis Ranch is the perfect place to go at any time of the year. The drills and the pros are great, and the place feels like home it is perfect nothing better than this place!
Great experience! Helps your overall game improve. Great staff, good tips and goo fun!
Newk’s strengths, that keep us coming back again and again, are the quality of instruction, hours on court, and the great staff. Chris Jacques in particular is just great, and so accommodating. The food is healthy and good, and the location in the hill country is ideal.
