There is a lot of shouting going on in the Billabong Bar. Some 60 of us have turned up at Newk’s Tennis Ranch on a balmy October weekend, and after introductions to the pros, an hour of lively drills, and a dinner of steak, salmon, scalloped potatoes, sautéed vegetables, salad, and chocolate cake we’ve reconvened in the bar, divided now into two groups, Team Australia and Team USA, for a pep talk with our respective captains and camp co-directors, Chris Jacques and Mitch Joyce.
The actual Davis Cup-style competition won’t take place until tomorrow when we gather as teams in two separate bleachers to cheer on our respective captains and their partners in a pro doubles exhibition. Tonight, however, we’re being introduced to the fine art of “barracking,” which consists chiefly of shouting loudly to support your team coupled with hurling insults at the opponents. And for those of us on Team Australia that also means a rehearsal of the classic cheer: “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oy, Oy, Oy.” The team meetings over, many of us grab a drink at the bar and head outside to a pavilion and firepit for s’mores, entertainment by the Grand Slams—an informal band comprised of several of the pros—and a chance to get to know more of our fellow campers.
They don’t make tennis camps like Newk’s tennis ranch anymore. It is the last of a breed, a vestige of the tennis-boom era when days of banging balls were followed by nights of hanging out with the pros and new-found tennis mates. Everybody played together all day and then gathered together again for dinner, merry-making, and maybe a beverage, and entertaining one another with songs, stories, and conversation. The unwritten assumption was that anyone who loved tennis enough to spend five hours a day doing drills must be worth getting to know.
Former world No. 1 John Newcombe opened the ranch in 1968 with former Trinity University coach Clarence Mabry. Much of the teaching methodology continues to be based on the techniques Newk learned from legendary Australian Davis Cup coach Harry Hopman and on those Mabry employed when he helped launch the careers of Dick Stockton, Brian Gottfried, and Chuck McKinley. As principal owner, Newk spends as much as six weeks a year at the Ranch, including two Fantasy events (see Calendar below. Historic photos and magazine covers of Newk decorate the walls of the main lodge, as do posters of Australia. His influence permeates the camp.
The property was, in Newk’s words “a run-down dude ranch,” when he and Mabry first looked at it, but its location in the Texas Hill Country, 20 miles north of San Antonio and 30 miles south of Austin, appealed to Newk who wanted a retreat from the circuit when he was in the U.S. Today the ranch has 31 courts, four of them indoors and another four that are clay. The original ranchhouse has a pro shop, dining room with tables for eight or more, and the Billabong Bar. Behind the ranchhouse stretches a terraced deck with picnic tables in the shade of several large live oaks—a camper favorite for lunch on pleasant days—just steps from an outdoor swimming pool and hot tub. From there it is a short stroll to the adult accommodations, which consist of a mixed bag of rooms, cottages, casitas, and one- and two-bedroom condos. As the ranch has grown, so has the town of New Braunfels, so the spread no longer feels so rural and isolated as it did when I first visited—particularly given that John Newcombe Estates, a housing development and country club, has spring up on the adjacent 200 acres. Still, I surprised a couple of deer on campus as I walked to breakfast one morning and another camper spotted a javelina.
Phil Hendrie has been the Director of Tennis for the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch for the past 40+ years, overseeing both the adult and junior programs. Throughout his time at the Ranch he has coached players such as Lleyton Hewitt, Li Na, Michael Venus, Nicole Melichar, Ryan Harrison, and many more. He also has a high success rate of getting young players college scholarships. Phil heads up a staff of more than a dozen tennis professionals including Stephen Rogers and Max McDulin, the Directors of Adult Tennis.
Tennis Programs: In the adult camps, each day begins with a basic overview of the strokes on the day's agenda, generally focused on basics of technique. From there it's out to the courts and a mixture of drills, half of them with the pro doing the feeding, the other half live ball sessions, pitting campers against each other or one or more pros. There is often one or more pros who rove, pulling aside individual campers for specific advice on improving a particular stroke. Each of the morning and afternoon sessions lasts 2½ to 3 hours and often conclude with some sort of informal doubles competition. Midweek sessions add videotaping to the mix.
Court Complex: 27 hard courts (4 covered) and 4 Har-Tru courts
Court fees: None
Off Court
Fitness Center: Although it is hard to imagine why anyone who spends 5 hours on court would feel the need for a fitness center, the Ranch does in fact have one in a cinderblock building near the covered courts, principally intended for the full-time junior academy students but available to adults who feel a need for it. It has the usual weight machines and Cardio equipment along with a battery of devices intended for tennis specific exercises, including medicine balls and balance platforms. It may also come into play, as it did during my visit, in the case of rain, sending part of the group to the covered courts, part to the fitness center for an overview of tennis-specific exercises. There is no spa; however, there is a massage therapist on call.
Accommodations
Campers can choose from a variety of accommodations, all clustered around or near the courts. These range from simple rooms with two double beds to one- and two-bedroom condos, the latter with fireplaces, full kitchens, and washer-dryers.
Getting there
Seasons: Year-round with the lowest rates available from November through February.
Travel Instructions: By air: The nearest airports are San Antonio, roughly 30 minutes to the south, and Austin, roughly 45 minutes to the north. By Car: The ranch is on Highway 46 in New Braunfels, Texas. From San Antonio, take I-35 North to Loop 337. Exit and turn left following Loop 337 to Highway 46 West. Exit, turn left (west), and drive approximately 2 miles then turn left at the large water tower marked "Newks Resort." Follow the signs to the Main Lodge.
Loved everything about it. Instruction was too notch. Instructors were fun, funny, and skilled. Downtime was a blast! Highly recommend and can’t wait to go back!

Love Newks!! Our team goes every year and we always feel like we leave with several new techniques, a feeling of improvement in our tennis play and a better knowledge of the game!! Could not ask for a more fun and talented group of coaches and instructors. They always have postive feedback and are not shy about pointing out your areas that need improvement, which is why we go!!
RR
Newk’s is awesome sauce! I have a wonderful time everytime I am there!! The food is incredible and the bar is a blast! Love it!!
CB
I was a new player but girlfriend is open level and we both left better players than when arrived. Chris and Sal were patient with me and tailored made the drills to fit mine and everyone else’s levels. And then we finished for the day, they made each night a blast. Plus I left with teaching materials to work on my game at home. Can’t wait to get back to take a game off of Chris 🙂

I have been to Newks many times and the experience has always been incredible rewarding and beneficial for both myself and my tennis game. If you are looking around for a tennis resort, look no further: Newks is the place to be.

Awesome!!! The pros here are beyond just good coaches, they all have fun outgoing personalities and fantastic attitudes that make this place a must-go for anyone at any level of tennis. Each pro made a point of learning everyone’s names from the start of the weekend that immediately connected all 40+ of us to them and made us feel special. Their outstanding sense of humor was a bonus appreciated by all and their instruction was most helpful. Accommodations were OK and food was not as healthy as I hoped for but I would highly recommend this place for anyone looking to have a ton of fun learning, laughing and looking to up their game!

Had a great time. Went for the week tennis camp. Expectations were not only met but exceeded. Pros were skilled, friendly, patient, fun and encouraging. Would encourage friends to go but not my club opponents as the teaching is exceptional. Very good coach to player ratio (1 to 4). Food was excellent. Rooms more than adequate for a ranch setting. Great value for the money. Can’t wait to go back.

The motto of the onsite full-time Junior Academy is ‘Team, Family, Team’. As an adult guest as soon as you arrive you are made to feel part of the ‘Team’. The coaches, Chris, Mitch and Adrian eat with you throughout the week and are genuinely interested in you as well as your tennis goals for the week. The bottom line is they really do care. It is obvious that coaching tennis is more than just a job for them and the enthusiasm and energy they show on court is infectious. I am a Tennis Pro from Ireland and this has been my second time at the ranch. I came to not only improve my own game but to learn from what the coaching team at John Newcombe do so well so I could transfer that back into my own coaching program back home. It is evident that the coaches have years of experience and knowledge and I guarantee no matter what your standard you will improve your tennis dramatically. I came away from my time at the ranch feeling that I had really improved my own game but also gained a wealth of coaching knowledge. More importantly the passion and love for the game shown by the coaching staff has energized me and I can’t wait for the new season to begin. The food and accommodation are great too. Simple but tasty home cooked food is exactly what you want after a hard days tennis and the rooms are always fresh and clean. John Newcombes caters for all types of tennis guest, singles, couples or families. As a tennis pro I was really interested in the junior academy which is headed up by the legendary Phile Hendrie ‘Fossil’. It is obvious that the Academy is a family with everyone working together to pursue their tennis goals. With expert coaches on hand and an inspiring atmosphere this place is perfect for any junior who is serious about improving their tennis. The Academy runs year round but there are numerous ‘junior camps’ throughout the year for those who are on vacation and want the John Newcombe experience. All in all John Newcombes is heaven for anyone who loves tennis. It may sound cheesy but it’s true, I was welcomed as part of the Team when I arrived but I felt like part of the Family by the end. I can’t wait to go back!

As a junior camper at Newks the friendly pro staff and the outgoing director of junior tennis Fossil Phil Hendrie engages you in the game in a way that you become immediately energized to play. There philosophy of entertaining players through matches instead of intensive drills proved to be one of the best ways to improve my game as a whole. Although about 30 percent of the camp involves drilling clinics less emphasis is placed on stroke analysis and more emphasis is place on the analytics of the game it self. The experiences and friendships created at Newks have been some of the best in my life and without these relationships I would be a very different person than I have grown up to be. I can’t thank this place enough for how it has defined me!
SS
This is the perfect camp you could ever ask for. My first time coming here was last summer and I went originally for two weeks but I loved it so much that I stayed for an extra two weeks. The coaches are the best you could ever ask for. I’d recommend this to anyone who willing to get better at tennis and build friendships with pther campers for life!!!

I’ve been going to John Newcombe’s Tennis Ranch for years and not only was it amazing the first time but it continues to get better! The staff is phenomenal and the feedback is always very positive. They make the week very enjoyable while substantially improving your game at the same time. I always recommend it to the people I play with back home and to anyone I meet who’s looking for a Tennis resort!

I give Newk’s a 5 star rating. I am a mother of two wonderful teen age children and what touched me the most was Chris Jacques’s comment that my children were “naturals.” This shows generosity with praise, perception, and devotion to students, the hallmark of a great teacher, and I should know since I am a university professor. I also admire Newk’s for other teachers as well. In particular Adrian and Sid come to mind as exemplary teachers with Chris Jacques as a beacon. Really, all the support staff seemed really enthusiastic and committed to tennis pedagogy. To sum up, the teachers at Newk’s are patient and kind, the atmosphere is rigorous and fun, and the best part for me is watching my children learn a great sport in a great place, close to my home. So yes, mates out there, enroll your kids here. Good Day!

I have been to Newks three times, twice as part of a group and this past weekend on my own. Each time, I have found the experience to be awesome! This is the place to go for an energy filled weekend of tennis. All of the pros are energetic and enthusiastic. They are constantly providing feedback and assistance to everyone there. The services provided are well worth the price…a weekend full of tennis instruction, good food, and clean comfortable accommodations. I don’t believe you can get as much anywhere else for the price of a weekend at Newks.
DH
What a place. Yes the tennis is good. Great instruction…great facilities. ..prime location. What keeps me coming back is the bond that I formed with everyone out there. I’ve traveled across the world but there is no place that is a better escape for me than Newk’s. I’ve known Chris Jacques for almost 10 years now. He and the staff there would do anything to not only help you improve your game but to have a wonderful experience. This place is like no other.
LP
Absolute best camp I have ever been to! I got the chance to meet people from all over the world and still to this day I keep in touch with them! The different levels of tennis you get to play there is unbelievable. All in all, I went there to get better at tennis and I came out physically and mentally stronger from this camp! You would have such a great time just as I did!
CH
It’s a really nice camp where you meet a lot of people. I had an awesome time overthere with a lot of tennis. The pro’s give you positive feedback, so you can keep growing in your game. After the tennis there is time to relax and have drink in the bar. The first night we had a campfire and I actually ate my first s’more (sorry, I’m not American). The second night we had a Halloween party and there was a good vibe. This whole weekend was tennistastic!
MS
My husband and I visited Newk’s Tennis Ranch for a fun tennis weekend away. The facility is definitely a ranch, so do not expect a 5 star hotel. However, the rooms are very clean, and the staff is great. The staff leads an energetic weekend of tennis with a lot of fun events throughout the weekend. Food is included in the stay and is good. The tennis drills appeared to be geared for beginner to intermediate level players. We were slightly disappointed in the drills and instruction for our levels. Basic groundstroke, serve etc instruction was given. Also, very little match play is available. Additionally, doubles tactics, strategy, shot selection etc was not given. Newk’s advertises 4:1 player to pro ratio on the court. Sometimes this was the case, and sometimes there were more players on the court. If you are a higher level player wanting high level coaching, this may not be the best place for you. If you are looking for a weekend away to hit a lot of tennis balls, this is a great place to visit.
CM
As a lefty, I was thrilled to discover that the tennis director was also a lefty as I’ve never received tennis instruction from another lefty! I finally received useful instruction on my serve and return as it pertains to me. I would have rated the pro-shop outstanding because they have everything you could possibly need, but everything in there is either Babolat (the Ranch’s sponsor) or Fila- no variety in vendors. I did the week long adult tennis camp and would recommend it to anyone.
AK
My fiance and I are serious about improving our tennis game and we chose the perfect place to get serious instruction with a fun atmosphere. We did the week long adult tennis camp during the third week of August and there were 4 other adults in our group. The tennis director was our constant instructor throughout the week with him parterning with other directors or assistants for each clinic based on their talents. We had a total of 9 clinics over 5 days covering every aspect of the game. Since there’s always two instructors and with only six adult participants (a rarity I think…), we got a lot of attention. The lunch was always delicious with a fresh salad bar, soup, cold cuts and a designated hot meal of the day. It was the most serious instruction we’ve ever received, and it’s also the most we’ve ever laughed on the tennis courts. The instructors are always light hearted, accomodating, respectful, and overall down-to-Earth great tennis players! Some special touches that I appreciated were that they always had towels for us out on the courts, fresh cold water, they give out awards at the end of camp, and we all had an awesome dinner at a Texas historical favorite restaurant in nearby Gruene,TX. I feel that my tennis game has improved and I’m looking foward to another solid tennis vacation next year.
MD
The camp is run perfectly! Always enjoy going to newks
GF
Excellent tennis instruction. Top notch staff. Not the best lodging, but good.
MH
For someone who is serious about working on their tennis this is the place to come. The instruction is second to none and all the staff are very welcoming and go out of there way to make your stay memorable. As a tennis coach myself I wanted to attend the adult camp to pick up some ideas and relax and play myself. The great thing is that all standards are catered for whether you are an seasoned club player or are just starting out. The rooms are clean and the food fantastic. Which is exactly what you want after a hard days tennis. I would recommend this camp to anyone and can’t wait to go back.
GM
I just had the opportunity to take part in the week-long adult program at the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch and it was simply fantastic. The level and quality of instruction and sound advice provided by all the directors and pros is just stellar and exemplary. For anyone wishing to really focus on their game and technique, this is by far the best way to do it. Chris, Mitch, Adrian and Nelson provide a non-intimidating and fun environment for one to improve their game. I will certainly be returning.

I brought my beginning level tennis team to Newks last winter. Most of us have been playing 2 years or less. It was a great experience. We learned way more than expected and had a fabulous time! The food was great, the rooms were comfortable and we even had a great time with the night life! The staff was young and energetic. And, met each player where they were. Everyone benefited from the weekend. We will be going back!
MF
Great instruction and fun
FS
Newks is a very positive and fun environment for people of all ages. First time I went over there was 3 years ago, and I have gone again every year after that. Newks is addicting! The professionals who work there always make sure you have the time of your life! And they are really friendly and helpful with international players, plus the pros speak several different languages. No weakness! I love Newks!
LA
Fun place where tennis is the focus. Rooms need help but comfortable. Pros fun and try to make day and nights fun
LW
Strengths: GREAT on court instruction, very fun atmosphere both on and off the courts. I can’t wait to go back! Great for large groups, small groups or the individual. Weaknesses: If you are looking for a fancy pants, spa type destination, this is a little more basic than that! That being said, the food is fantastic and the lodging quite comfortable.
TL
Fantastic. Unparalleled instruction with a great atmosphere. Fantastic weather and a great value.
VC
This place is unbelievably awesome. Rustic, full of fun in every aspect. Beautiful hill country atmosphere! No one is left out. Everyone is treated like they are apart of a winning team. The instruction & drills are solid. You are guaranteed to improve ur game! After all the hofine meal, music, singing & dancing! The massages I received from Vanessa BODYWERKS were the best I’ve ever experienced – amazing! This place takes you to a very positive, upheartedly. Call for your reservatiocanplyour time for the best affordable tennis time you have ever had. Ossyi ossy issy oih.

Intense tennis program with friendly helpful Pro’s that Are always available. You will have tons of FUN & your game will greatly improve! Newk’s is affordable with lovely cabins and great food. That’s why I go 2 or 3 times a year!!
KH
Great coaches, know exactly what they are doing, very friendly and well qualified

When anyone asks me about going to a tennis camp, I always respond “JUST GO TO NEWK’S”….you’ll know why when you get there! From the lovely setting in the Hill Country of Texas, to the warm reception by Newk’s staff, to the EXCELLENT INSTRUCTION by the great tennis pros there, you are set to have a good time!! The setting is my retreat from home, the tennis is so much fun and I always feel that my tennis improves a notch each year I go. I’ve been there 7 or 8 times, and keep going back. I’ve met people there, who I have stayed in contact with over the years, and both the setting and the staff has facilitated such a great atmosphere that I love to go back. One of the highlights of my ‘tennis experience’ from going to Newk’s for a fantasy camp with John Newcombe and Roy Emerson. To have had such great personal coaching by those two men was just unbelievable and would be a real gift to someone or to yourself to experience! You will not go wrong going to Newk’s and the value for dollar is outstanding!!
MS
Fantastic spirit and engagement. The tennis and tennis instructio are top quality but the best thing is the amazing staff and their readiness to make your tennis vacation the best it can be.
RA
We love Newks! Awesome staff, great tennis, fun Saturday night parties. A definite must do. Plus of course the outlets at San Marcos the day before tennis!
KS
Great Tennis. Play 4.5 women’s and always learn something new. Food is amazing. Beautiful setting. Easy short drive from San Antonio or Austin airports. Massage therapist do a great job with sports massage. Adult weekend camp perfect for a team, couple or just buds. All skill levels and really works out great with all the drills. The pros do a great job of mixing it up.
KD
Great instruction. Also a fun time. Great meals. I learned a lot and played a lot of tennis. I cannot wait to go back. My son has also been a few times and loves the junior program.
LM
I began as a student in the tennis academy and a camper during summer camps when I was 9 years old. This place became a second home to me and I attended from year to year until I was old enough to become a counselor. I am now out of college and can still say passionately that John Newcombe Tennis Ranch, along with the staff and the experiences that came with this place, had an enormous amount of influence on my tennis game, as well as helped to develop some of the most prized relationships I still have with people I met there. I would recommend this facility to anyone, of any age. You can’t put a price on the value I hold in my heart for Newks!
PF
Excellent facilities, fun atmosphere, coaches very knowledgeable about the game of tennis.
MB
Greatest place in the world. Tons of great tennis, team building, and family atmosphere. Would send my children there year round. Phil and Chris run the best camp in the world.
KB
Awesome! Great instructors and a beautiful facility!
KR
It was awesome! I’ve been 4 times and I have had so much fun!
CW
Had a fantastic time every time. The pros are great, the grounds are beautiful, and if you want to play a lot of tennis, this is the place.
DS
One of the only resorts where the tennis camp is truly a camp for the adults. The pros are not only excellent in their instruction on the court and make it fun on the court BUT they also heavily socialize with the adults off court. This makes the experience unique and exceptional as they share their tennis stories, culture, etc. with the participants. Whether you go alone or with a team of friends, the pros make you feel comfortable and part of the overall experience.
BF
Sent my son there to improve his game and he became a top high school player and went on to play at college. I took lessons from Cris Jacques (Pro) and thourghly enjoyed my sessions and learned so much that I dramatically improved my game and wins in USTA league games. I will go back this year to further improve my skills and understanding of the game.
CE
Wow ! This place is amazing, my kids and I are both campers there and it is been more than a camp for us, its our most anticipated getaway and we never enjoy leaving. My kids love the pro staff there, they are very informative and patient people who love the game of tennis and recognize all the kids for their efforts, attitudes and ability. The food is top notch and healthy and the cabins are comfortable. Without a doubt will you find such a family environment and high level of tennis anywhere else. Cant wait to get back.
CM
I have attended both the summer junior camps and the year round academy. Both are wonderful and I wouldn’t want to attend anywhere else. The staff is great, food is one of the best tennis resorts I’ve seen and the tennis is top notch. After attending for however long you wish, it’s not like you’re just leaving a tennis ranch, it feels as if your leaving a newly found home with new family. It’s a great experience and it’s wonderful.
EM
We had taken a group to the tennis camp for the past few years. We always have a great time. It’s a work hard play hard kind of environment. If you love tennis, it’s a great place to be!!
CT
The Ranch is an awesome tennis experience. The instruction and tennis is first class. We did 5 hours of clinic for 5 days and they had something new each day. We had eight in our group and 4 or 5 other people in our clinics. They had 4 or 5 Pro’s working with each clinic, a very good ratio of students to Pro’s. Lots of energy by the staff and very good drills and strategy. Our package included 3 meals a day, the food was amazing. I was so nice not to have to worry about cooking or going out to each each day. Overall tennis and food would get five stars. The accommodations were the only weakness here. The condo units are in need of updating. I believe they were in the process of doing just that. Would rate the accommodations 2.5 to 3 stars. Overall we had a great time and would go again.
RK
Newks was fantastic! The atmosphere was everything I could have wanted. The weather was lovely. The staff was smart, knowledgeable, and great at encouraging students to dig deep and continue to work! The kitchen did a wonderful job with the food, the rooms were nice, and the ranch itself is very pretty. I really want to go back already!!
We want to see your racquet sports vacations! When you’re documenting your trip, tag @TennisResortsOnline on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn and use #TROAdventures for a chance to be featured on our page.

The services provided are well worth the price…a weekend full of tennis instruction, good food, and clean comfortable accommodations. I don’t believe you can get as much anywhere else for the price of a weekend at Newks.
The camp is run perfectly! Always enjoy going to newks
Excellent tennis instruction. Top notch staff. Not the best lodging, but good.
Great instruction and fun
Newks is a very positive and fun environment for people of all ages. First time I went over there was 3 years ago, and I have gone again every year after that. Newks is addicting! The professionals who work there always make sure you have the time of your life! And they are really friendly and helpful with international players, plus the pros speak several different languages. No weakness! I love Newks!
Fun place where tennis is the focus. Rooms need help but comfortable. Pros fun and try to make day and nights fun
Fantastic. Unparalleled instruction with a great atmosphere. Fantastic weather and a great value.
Fantastic spirit and engagement. The tennis and tennis instructio are top quality but the best thing is the amazing staff and their readiness to make your tennis vacation the best it can be.
We love Newks! Awesome staff, great tennis, fun Saturday night parties. A definite must do. Plus of course the outlets at San Marcos the day before tennis!
Great instruction. Also a fun time. Great meals. I learned a lot and played a lot of tennis. I cannot wait to go back. My son has also been a few times and loves the junior program.
Excellent facilities, fun atmosphere, coaches very knowledgeable about the game of tennis.
Greatest place in the world. Tons of great tennis, team building, and family atmosphere. Would send my children there year round. Phil and Chris run the best camp in the world.
Awesome! Great instructors and a beautiful facility!
It was awesome! I’ve been 4 times and I have had so much fun!
Had a fantastic time every time. The pros are great, the grounds are beautiful, and if you want to play a lot of tennis, this is the place.
We had taken a group to the tennis camp for the past few years. We always have a great time. It’s a work hard play hard kind of environment. If you love tennis, it’s a great place to be!!
