There is a lot of shouting going on in the Billabong Bar. Some 60 of us have turned up at Newk’s Tennis Ranch on a balmy October weekend, and after introductions to the pros, an hour of lively drills, and a dinner of steak, salmon, scalloped potatoes, sautéed vegetables, salad, and chocolate cake we’ve reconvened in the bar, divided now into two groups, Team Australia and Team USA, for a pep talk with our respective captains and camp co-directors, Chris Jacques and Mitch Joyce.
The actual Davis Cup-style competition won’t take place until tomorrow when we gather as teams in two separate bleachers to cheer on our respective captains and their partners in a pro doubles exhibition. Tonight, however, we’re being introduced to the fine art of “barracking,” which consists chiefly of shouting loudly to support your team coupled with hurling insults at the opponents. And for those of us on Team Australia that also means a rehearsal of the classic cheer: “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oy, Oy, Oy.” The team meetings over, many of us grab a drink at the bar and head outside to a pavilion and firepit for s’mores, entertainment by the Grand Slams—an informal band comprised of several of the pros—and a chance to get to know more of our fellow campers.
They don’t make tennis camps like Newk’s tennis ranch anymore. It is the last of a breed, a vestige of the tennis-boom era when days of banging balls were followed by nights of hanging out with the pros and new-found tennis mates. Everybody played together all day and then gathered together again for dinner, merry-making, and maybe a beverage, and entertaining one another with songs, stories, and conversation. The unwritten assumption was that anyone who loved tennis enough to spend five hours a day doing drills must be worth getting to know.
Former world No. 1 John Newcombe opened the ranch in 1968 with former Trinity University coach Clarence Mabry. Much of the teaching methodology continues to be based on the techniques Newk learned from legendary Australian Davis Cup coach Harry Hopman and on those Mabry employed when he helped launch the careers of Dick Stockton, Brian Gottfried, and Chuck McKinley. As principal owner, Newk spends as much as six weeks a year at the Ranch, including two Fantasy events (see Calendar below. Historic photos and magazine covers of Newk decorate the walls of the main lodge, as do posters of Australia. His influence permeates the camp.
The property was, in Newk’s words “a run-down dude ranch,” when he and Mabry first looked at it, but its location in the Texas Hill Country, 20 miles north of San Antonio and 30 miles south of Austin, appealed to Newk who wanted a retreat from the circuit when he was in the U.S. Today the ranch has 31 courts, four of them indoors and another four that are clay. The original ranchhouse has a pro shop, dining room with tables for eight or more, and the Billabong Bar. Behind the ranchhouse stretches a terraced deck with picnic tables in the shade of several large live oaks—a camper favorite for lunch on pleasant days—just steps from an outdoor swimming pool and hot tub. From there it is a short stroll to the adult accommodations, which consist of a mixed bag of rooms, cottages, casitas, and one- and two-bedroom condos. As the ranch has grown, so has the town of New Braunfels, so the spread no longer feels so rural and isolated as it did when I first visited—particularly given that John Newcombe Estates, a housing development and country club, has spring up on the adjacent 200 acres. Still, I surprised a couple of deer on campus as I walked to breakfast one morning and another camper spotted a javelina.
Phil Hendrie has been the Director of Tennis for the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch for the past 40+ years, overseeing both the adult and junior programs. Throughout his time at the Ranch he has coached players such as Lleyton Hewitt, Li Na, Michael Venus, Nicole Melichar, Ryan Harrison, and many more. He also has a high success rate of getting young players college scholarships. Phil heads up a staff of more than a dozen tennis professionals including Stephen Rogers and Max McDulin, the Directors of Adult Tennis.
Tennis Programs: In the adult camps, each day begins with a basic overview of the strokes on the day's agenda, generally focused on basics of technique. From there it's out to the courts and a mixture of drills, half of them with the pro doing the feeding, the other half live ball sessions, pitting campers against each other or one or more pros. There is often one or more pros who rove, pulling aside individual campers for specific advice on improving a particular stroke. Each of the morning and afternoon sessions lasts 2½ to 3 hours and often conclude with some sort of informal doubles competition. Midweek sessions add videotaping to the mix.
Court Complex: 27 hard courts (4 covered) and 4 Har-Tru courts
Court fees: None
Off Court
Fitness Center: Although it is hard to imagine why anyone who spends 5 hours on court would feel the need for a fitness center, the Ranch does in fact have one in a cinderblock building near the covered courts, principally intended for the full-time junior academy students but available to adults who feel a need for it. It has the usual weight machines and Cardio equipment along with a battery of devices intended for tennis specific exercises, including medicine balls and balance platforms. It may also come into play, as it did during my visit, in the case of rain, sending part of the group to the covered courts, part to the fitness center for an overview of tennis-specific exercises. There is no spa; however, there is a massage therapist on call.
Accommodations
Campers can choose from a variety of accommodations, all clustered around or near the courts. These range from simple rooms with two double beds to one- and two-bedroom condos, the latter with fireplaces, full kitchens, and washer-dryers.
Getting there
Seasons: Year-round with the lowest rates available from November through February.
Travel Instructions: By air: The nearest airports are San Antonio, roughly 30 minutes to the south, and Austin, roughly 45 minutes to the north. By Car: The ranch is on Highway 46 in New Braunfels, Texas. From San Antonio, take I-35 North to Loop 337. Exit and turn left following Loop 337 to Highway 46 West. Exit, turn left (west), and drive approximately 2 miles then turn left at the large water tower marked "Newks Resort." Follow the signs to the Main Lodge.
Strengths are the great people that show up for the tennis. Good players and fun folks – lots of fun tennis and camaraderie. The clinics were not always the promised 4:1 ratio so less hitting and more waiting than optimal at times. Chris, the main pro, is a great personality and tried to keep the energy up. I did get a few useful pointers from the pros and we still hit a lot of balls. Rain on Saturday night meant playing on soggy clay courts on Sunday which was not so great, but don’t know what the covered courts would have been like. I went for the 3 days of tennis – Friday through Sunday. The Friday evening clinic is barely an hour, and Sunday ends up being less than 2 hours of tennis rather than 3, loosing 30 minutes to “chalk talk” at the start and 30 minutes after for “awards”. So what looks like 1 full and 2 half days of tennis is closer to 1 full plus less than a half. For those of us with time off at a premium, it would be better to start earlier on Friday or go later on Sunday and call it 2 days. Still a great value for the price, with all meals and accommodations and lessons included. The food was great and just right for a tennis camp – plentiful and tasty but still reasonably healthy with lean meats and good options for veggies and always a big salad at lunch and dinner…and always a nice dessert. Best to go with a buddy or group of friends for the party atmosphere. The place generally seems a little tired and in need of some TLC and sprucing up around the grounds and so forth. The room was pleasant and comfortably furnished. One serious deficiency – no ice machine or readily available ice for water, for sore joints, etc., you have to ask for ice from the kitchen or bartender or front desk attendant…unless you get clever and start hoarding it from the ice set out for drinks during meals. No surprise then that there’s no ice bucket in the room!
DR
A must for all junior players. I spent many months there as a junior. It was a great experience. Most of the senior management remain – only gives confidence that the experiment will be all the same, but better due to more investment in facilities.

FIRST RATE TENNIS CAMP The Newks’s tennis program is not only FUN but amazing because it caters to each person’s level and is great prep for competitive league play. My group goes at least once a year. Chris and all the pros bring tremendous energy and have a great sense of humor and explain things effectively and clearly. They are skilled and passionate about teaching and can zoom in and identify problem areas in each individuals strokes. A weekend at the ranch will for sure bring your game to the next level! I can’t wait to return!
KW
Really fun. Lots of balls.
GZ
Very customer friendly, relaxed ambiance, extremely tennis focussed. Perfect for any tennis afficionado.

John Newcombe Tennis Ranch, a place where I found my passion in tennis. This place is full of big personalities with a lot of heart for the game. I trained in the academy for 6 years. Within my first year, I went from a beginner level who had never played a tournament before to being a top ranked player in the state and playing in national tournaments. I can attest to the quality of the training and instruction, with the emphasis on the “this ain’t no country club” mentality. Fossil Phil is the heart and soul of this ranch and there is no other man who loves the sport more and who can motivate you to dream big, strive for greatness and push the limits. All the coaches make the atmosphere fun while providing top level instruction. I will always share a special bond with the fellow students and staff I made through the academy. The academy fosters a community centered around the sport and the willingness to work together, train hard and achieve goals. “Team, Family, Team” was a motto coined during my years and it rings true to this day. I made lifelong friendships that span the globe. Thank you, John Newcombe Tennis Ranch for the tennis, the discipline, the work ethic, the friendships and the memories.
KS
We’ll run camp out with great instruction and a fun atmosphere.

I spent many years of my youth going to Newks. I started off at the camp where they would place people in different groups according to their experience level and they made each group so much fun! All of the staff was incredible and so easy to get along with and they really helped improve my game. Each day when practice was done, there were different activities people could participate in such as soccer and things alike and it was really easy to make friends in these friendly competitions. The amentites of the camp were really nice as well because you lived with groups of people and always had the best time. After spending many summers at the camp, I decided to go a step further and join the summer academy which was a bit more intense but super beneficial for my game. The academy focused more on tennis but there was still free time in the evenings and on the weekends. The times I spent at Newks were some of the best of my life and I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone.
MK
The director, Chris, knows what he’s doing. His direction is spot on. They do a wonderful job accommodating the program to what you would like to work on in addition to running a variety of drills. They also try to give you a social experience. I would say that some of the “younger” pro’s at times are a little more interested in placing/putting the ball away rather giving you the chance to hit another ball. This is not the entire group. This is a place for fine instruction and many hours on the court. You can’t beat the value, and I’ve been to other resorts.
CM
The environment the workers create makes you feel right at home! Located in the beautiful Texas Hill country, there really is no place like it. If you ever get the opportunity the go stay at Newks Ranch, TAKE IT! They accommodate all needs, gratefully!
EL
Great atmosphere ! Lots of drills and live play.
DB
This is the best value of the tennis resorts. Excellent tennis instruction and drills all week long, or all weekend long if you prefer.
SS
Lots of tennis fun with professional and friendly staff.
FQ
Great place to spend a week training tennis, great facilities with a healthy environment, I recommend it a lot!!!
GD
I loved Newks! Great people, environment, coaches, etc. I’ve been about three times and I absolutely loved it. I definitely learned a lot along with having a good time!
JH
This camp was amazing. All the tennis you could ever want to play plus extra events in the evening for socializing. The Pro’s are fantastic and they work so hard to make sure you get the most from their program. The lead pro Chris is especially hard working and so fun! The only weakness I would mention is the rooms. In the two bedroom condos there is one really nice big room and then one tiny one yet the charge for both is the same. On the positive side of the accommodations, the food was great. I would definitely go again.
BK
I attended this tennis camp many times and I absolutely loved it. Everyone there was so friendly and the instructors were always pushing us to succeed. I met a bunch of friends at Newks, who I am still friends with today, and it was one of the greatest experiences. Between the fitness with Fossil Phil and the Get Newked games, I had a great time! I never had any problems, which led me to go there so many times. I highly recommend going here to have fun, meet new friends, and play tennis!
PK
I had a great time at the resort and thought everything and everyone was top notch. I thought the food was terrific and the tennis pros very nice and very knowledgeable. The accommodations were very nice, simple but very functional and neat, and clean. Bathrooms were comfortable and stylish. Chris Jacques is a very funny, larger than life type character, who kept us laughing but also was always working to make us better tennis players. He made the trip especially fun and memorable with his antics and dry one liners “nice facial expressions Steve!” or “Let’s show some enthusiasm Sam!” I would definitely go back and highly recommend.
EB
Went from not knowing how to play in 7th grade to being State champ in Singles by my sophomore year thanks to the individualized coaching and relationship with the coaches at Newcombe. They make sure everyone feels like family. They push you when you need pushed and love ya when you need loved. The resort is tucked away in beautiful TX country and is a relaxing get away where you can be as serious or fun as ya want. The staff is hilarious while also informative. Both my mom and I have partaken in adult camps as well and have met lifetime friends. The instructors and staff are amazing. The Texas sun doesn’t hurt the whole experience. Highly recommend.

John Newcombe Tennis Ranch has an outstanding team of tennis instructors!!! They are excited! Passionate!!! Positive!!! I have 3 daughters, 13, 9 and 3…… my older girls were introduced to the game through Newks Quick Start Program when we first moved to New Braunfels, where the Newks Tennis Ranch is located. Relocating and saying good bye to our home town was a bitter sweet feeling…. New School’s and a new neighborhood…. Moving to a small town and being the new kid wasn’t easy for my girls, but coming out to Newks and being around these young exciting people with such positive Can Do attitudes helped my girls find their way!!! I’m deeply grateful to The John Newcombe Tennis Ranch “ Newks” for being so incredibly encouraging! Fantastic! Encouraging! And am so happy to see my girls enjoying Tennis!!!! A timeless sport! A life long sport ! I can see my daughters coming back to Newks Ranch for a lifetime!

1.Overall wonderful experience 2.Staff is very friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, entertaining, & funny 3. You leave feeling like you have most definitely worked hard at learning something but you have just had a relaxing vacation too 4. The drills are fabulous and you work hard but at the same time you are having fun
AH
Great place to go for beginners and advanced tennis players!! Great drills & Great food!! Staff is very friendly!! Can’t wait to go back!! Chris is awesome!! I also had the privilege of meeting John Newcomb!! ??????

John Newcombe Tennis Ranch is the best place on this planet for improving your tennis and having great fun at the same time. Newks has a special feel to it. You can’t help but love it. The coaches are amzing and the facilities are world class. Everyone there makes you feel like you are on a big team but it also is a very relaxing place to be. Tennis and fun are the most important things to the entire staff and if you are looking for those things Newks is the place to be.
CJ
Newks is truly the happiest place on earth to me. I’ve gone at least once a year for the past 10 years. Every single member of the staff from the courts to the kitchen to maintenance and everything in between is hardworking and dedicated to providing the best possible experiences. I could not give a higher recomendation.
EE
John Newcombe Tennis Ranch is a top notch organization. Very few businesses today operate with the high level of expertise and energy as they do at Newks. The motto “Team-Family-Team” is one that they live by, and lifelong friends were made here. I was able to have many opportunities that would not have been available to me without this organization and many of my best childhood memories were at the academies and camps I attended. If you are looking for a upscale country club feel for your vacations and getaways there are some new options but that is not what makes Newks what it is. If you are looking for exceptional instruction and fun above all else then this is the place for you.
CH
I always have a great time when I visit JN. The pros are great to work with and very informative and patient during the lesson. The listen to what your struggling with and formulate a strategic lesson to make your game better.
ED
I’ve been going to Newks since I was 12. I started out going to their junior camps and then their tennis academy. Once I was an adult, I worked as a pro at their academy. This place will forever be a part of my life. Every time I go back I feel like family. The Team Family Team motto is real. I’ve made lifelong friends and connections. The training for the academy is also world class.
AK
Phenomenal place! Great tennis, great staff, and beautiful location! Whether looking for a summer camp for your kid or a getaway weekend for yourself, a trip to the ranch will not disappoint. And they make you feel like family.
AP
Such a great atmosphere to be around! Super nice people and a lot of tennis! He perfect summer camp and academy combo. Staff is super energetic and are great with the kids on and off the court. It is in the middle of nowhere so you do feel like you are at camp. And the WiFi is spotty… but other than that it’s great!
AG
The Ranch is an amazing tennis facility!!! They do it all! From adult clinics, weekly and weekend, to junior academy and summer camps. The ranch is where I learned how to play tennis and because of it my life has forever been changed. Phil Hendrie and Chris Jacques are the most top notch directors you have ever seen. I hope everyone in the tennis world gets a chance to experience this amazing venue.
CC
Most amazing tennis experience! Prepare to work!
CL
We absolutely love Newk’s. The tennis is great, the instructors are awesome. We always learn a lot when we go, but the main thing we love about Newk’s is that it is always SO MUCH FUN! The instructors are super nice and easy and fun to hang out with. Again, the tennis is awesome, but so is having a beer by the outside fire pit in the evening. Highly recommend!!!!!!!
DB
Fun experience with a genuine team!
BC
I found some of my closest friends here and it was a great tennis experience. I would recommend all my tennis friends to go. They put you in the tennis level you need to be in and play some great competitive tennis.
AJ
Took my family to the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch and Wow were we all blown away, by its professionalism, enjoyment and character. Coming from Australia it bought us back home and added with the unique Texas charm and spirit! Tennis was competitive and fun with all of us coming away better tennis players, but more importantly a new enjoyment for the game. Staff where friendly professional and so much fun Accomodation pleasant and comfortable, food outstanding For us we will be back and more than once 100% the best family experience we’ve had together. Go Newks!
AC
The staff is great, in particular the Director Chris Jacques. He has tons of experience and balances great expertise with loads of laughter! You will surely have a good time.
AC
If you want to think of a tennis camp of a life time memory. This is theeeee camp! I went to Newks in ’91 as a junior. I am back now in 2018. It is like seeing your long lost love again. What has been consistent and stay consistent? The love and friendliness here. Scott Jacques has made all this possible. Scott has a big heart and he will make sure everyone is well taken care of with passion and love. Even a beginner will turn into a believer after this trip. I can guarantee that. I have heard two testimonies already while leaving the camp. They both said they want to play more tennis. The grace of this camp can be felt everywhere! How can we not win after this camp?! This camp preaches grace. And grace always wins. Bring this to your tennis game and you will see instant results. They made us feel special in our own way?! Isn’t that what tennis is all about? It will change your tennis game, your life. There’s a reason why this is the second best tennis academy resort in the world. You will gain a lot of knowledge without any pressure or even knowing it. It is that cool! I am talking world class training without even acknowledging it. That is consistency… Talk about staying modest and humble. This is it!
MW
This is the best tennis camp. I have been here four times and wanting to go again. I’m also planning on going to the other camp in Florida. Keep up the good work
AR
Just returned from a week at the Tennis Ranch. It was an exceptional week of excellent instruction. Strengths: individual attention, high quality feedback, consistent positivity. I also greatly enjoyed watching the Academy Students who were inspiring in both their abilities but also in their total acceptance of a bunch of 3.5 to 4.0 over 50’s watching their drills. Food was delicious and plentiful. Chris, Weston, Hunter and Eric all were dedicated to the task at hand of improving the play of a foursome of very average players. I went with my 78 year old dad who has never really taken a lesson and he had a great time. I definitely will return. I also enjoyed side adventures to New Braunfels and Austin. All other camps were super expensive, this one is super reasonable and extremely worth the money.
JR
Strengths – Instructors were very willing to customize, esp. if you told them exactly what you needed to work on – Chris, Hunter, and Tyler were fantastic and always eager to help with specific actionable tips – Very positive social atmosphere with regular shared meals – Nice hearty breakfast buffet – Great value for the dollar – If you are a strong player, pros will often be matched up to play with you (at least for me) Weaknesses – Some instructors were basically robotic feeders and didn’t really offer any advice – A bit too much match play for me (probably 20% of time) as I wanted more drills to focus on skill development – Too many of the drills and games (and even doubles play) intermixed very disparate levels (e.g. 3.0 and 4.5 probably should not play doubles together) – Limited food variety at lunch and dinner can get tedious – My children also did the youth tennis program, but none of them could tell me any specific advice they got (hard to say how much to believe this though) Overall This is a great place for the dollar and I’d highly recommend it. I also went to Saddlebrook this year. I’d say that while I got more in terms of tennis development from Newks, my child got more out of Saddlebrook. Of course, Saddlebrook has a much posher facility, but it also costs much, much more.
GS
I have been going to Newks for 25 years now, or thereabouts, because I have lost count. I just keep coming back, usually during mid October for the weekend right before the Legends Week. It is a busy weekend but feels like an old friends’ homecoming trip because of the great friends I have made at the Ranch for well over two decades. I love this place so let me just be clear about that from the get go. Anyways, strengths. The emphasis is on fun here and that is the primary reason why I keep returning. Sure, you can drill til you drop in the daily clinics and drills, particularly if the Texas heat is upon you. You can also find good doubles and singles match ups if your body can withstand all the tennis. Chris Jacques remains in charge of adult tennis at the Ranch and he has become a dear friend as well as a great pro. Chris’s style is Aussie laid back and that continues to work for me. His cadre of teaching pros, which gets replenished somewhat each year, continues to be strong. This is not a camp intended for those who want a lot of individual attention and lessons. It is really much more of a group phenomenon. That said, any guest can arrange for private lessons if they so choose, you just gotta find the time to do it and of course, private lessons are not part of the affordable camp fee. The condos are not 5 star and there always seems to be something idiosyncratic about them, but they are comfortable and close to the courts. Great places to hang out with your mates. But if you are looking for 5 star accommodations, this ain’t your place. It remains rustic with no illusions of being a Michelin property or resort. As for the food, the food on the Ranch is served buffet style and while it is not gourmet by any means, hey, it does the trick. If you want to explore local cuisine, you can always make excursions in to New Braunfels for BBQ and other good food, and the 45 minute trek to Austin puts you in culinary heaven. As for weaknesses? My pet peeve has always been the hot tub. They only have one and it is relatively small. While they replaced the old tub a few years ago, the new tub in my view is only somewhat better. Wish they would invest the $s in a bigger tub so that more of us could enjoy it over the long weekend. Another weakness in my view is the older har-tru courts. While these have underground hydration, these green clay courts suffer from inconsistent hydration and are not on par with other tennis locations that have good har-tru courts. Would be awesome if Newk and company would be able to put out some $s to upgrade these courts for those of us who really need the softer surface. The hard courts, by the way, were in rock solid shape overall on my last visit. One other very minor critique. For years, one of the things I looked forward to with each visit to Newks was getting my Newks Ranch T-shirt which used to be given to each guest. This year, the Ranch no longer provided the free T-shirt. I don’t really know why this was but what I can say is that some of the 1st timers that I brought with me to the Ranch this past October were disappointed in not receiving their T shirt. They wanted to wear it proudly upon returning home and my feeling is the shirt really does help promote the Ranch. Oh well. Otherwise, let me finish by saying that I have encouraged many many friends to visit the Ranch over the years, and many have and many continue to do so. And, those of us who do return again and again do so for three primary reasons. One, it is all about the fun. Two, we have made incredible friends. And last but not least, Newks is truly a great tennis camp. I will be back in October 2018!
EJ
I only attended the adult tennis camp (did not stay or eat there). It was a smaller group of 7-8 people in the heat of July in Texas. The instruction was terrific and I really enjoyed myself. It was 5 hours of tennis a day and was a terrific value. I would attend again.
SS
It is hard to beat the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch, why? Well their pros are first notch. They actually do care more about you then about themselves , are very versatile and you are going to get a ton of ball hitting up to 2 sessions 5 hours per day. Also afterwards, they make an effort to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner with you during your stay. It is not a customer experience, it is more like family. I have been there about 6 times and will go back again, heck they even know my name down there , try to find a resort where you are not just another number, at Newks you won’t feel left out. Guaranteed!
AC
It’s the best tennis program in the country! Amazing pros who make it fun while implementing the very best instruction!!!
TC
I went to the John Newcombe Ranch twice in 2016. The first time was in March, I was part of a small group of 5 people. We had two pros on court for the entire time. The instruction was fantastic and the accommodations were wonderful. We especially liked the food, which was on site and inclusive. My game improved from this short week. The second time I went there was for the Halloween weekend with a bigger party of 15. We joined anther 36 players for a great group of 51. The visit was incredible. The staff was able to give the same level of attention and assistance to the large group as the small. Once again, my game improved. During the Halloween weekend we attending the Halloween party. It was so much fun we are going this year at Halloween again. I strongly recommend this resort because of the amazing level of instruction and the fun, total vacation, experience.
CR
Absolutely awesome tennis venue- legendary bunch of pros who live and breathe the sport. These folks know the game better than anyone and clearly love sharing all of their skills and experiences with anyone who passes through- 10 out of 10 from a genuine Aussie- if you are looking for the ultimate tennis experience look no further than Newks!!!!!
FR
My fourth trip to Newk’s was every bit as good as the previous three, so I guess you can conclude I’m a satisfied customer. There are several things that keep me coming back: high quality instruction, a great attitude on the part of the staff and guests, comfortable lodgings, good food, warm sunny days, and all at an affordable price. If you’re looking for fancy, up-scale amenities, Newk’s may not be at the top of your list, but for a fun and beneficial tennis experience, it’s tough to beat. (Tip: go to the nearby winery for a surprisingly good tasting event.)
AH
The John Newcombe is a state of the art tennis resort in which one feels the positive vibe at the moment you set a foot on the place. The moment you step on the court, you feel the energy the Professional Staff brings in. Not only are they great at giving outstanding instruction, but they are also high level ex college players or at some point Professional Tennis Players. They are very down to earth individuals, and you will easily make a connection with them,or in case of the Adult Program grab a beer with them.It doesn’t matter what your skill level or whether you are a clay courter or a indoor warrior,I can guarantee you that you will feel the satisfaction of playing your best tennis at the moment you put your racquet in the bag.Don’t forget to bring your kids to camp too.Their junior program is world class. Not only will they improve their tennis and matchplay, but will have their time of their lives off and on the court. The overall experience the JNTR is once in a lifetime opportunity to fall in love with the game of tennis for the first time or renewing vows.By the time you leave,I can guarantee you will not only feel good about yourself on and off the court, but also you made strong friendships with the staff. The magic of this place happens when you return, because I guarantee once you return you will feel like you never left.

Love every aspect of it! The tennis pros are amazing! Courts are in great shape! Adult weekend program is incredible and so much fun! We even had a lesson from John Newcombe himself! Can’t say enough good things about it.

Love, Love, Love going to Newks! I recently wore a Newks sweatshirt while on a trip from Texas to Ala. and a complete stranger spotted it in the Atlanta airport. She came up to me and it stemmed a conversation about how great it is to attend events at the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch. I like that it’s a “Ranch” not a “Country Club” but some may find the accommodations rustic. It has a hometown atmosphere, even if you’re not from Texas, like me. The pros make everyone feel welcome and are gifted at improving a player’s tennis game, no matter their level. My family includes intermediate, strong-intermediate and advanced players of 3 different age groups. We’ve all taken advantage of either the weekly clinics, the academy commuter program and the summer camps…Newks truly has something for everyone.
We want to see your racquet sports vacations! When you’re documenting your trip, tag @TennisResortsOnline on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn and use #TROAdventures for a chance to be featured on our page.

Really fun. Lots of balls.
The environment the workers create makes you feel right at home! Located in the beautiful Texas Hill country, there really is no place like it. If you ever get the opportunity the go stay at Newks Ranch, TAKE IT! They accommodate all needs, gratefully!
Great atmosphere ! Lots of drills and live play.
This is the best value of the tennis resorts. Excellent tennis instruction and drills all week long, or all weekend long if you prefer.
Lots of tennis fun with professional and friendly staff.
Great place to spend a week training tennis, great facilities with a healthy environment, I recommend it a lot!!!
I loved Newks! Great people, environment, coaches, etc. I’ve been about three times and I absolutely loved it. I definitely learned a lot along with having a good time!
Newks is truly the happiest place on earth to me. I’ve gone at least once a year for the past 10 years. Every single member of the staff from the courts to the kitchen to maintenance and everything in between is hardworking and dedicated to providing the best possible experiences. I could not give a higher recomendation.
I always have a great time when I visit JN. The pros are great to work with and very informative and patient during the lesson. The listen to what your struggling with and formulate a strategic lesson to make your game better.
Phenomenal place! Great tennis, great staff, and beautiful location! Whether looking for a summer camp for your kid or a getaway weekend for yourself, a trip to the ranch will not disappoint. And they make you feel like family.
Most amazing tennis experience! Prepare to work!
Fun experience with a genuine team!
I found some of my closest friends here and it was a great tennis experience. I would recommend all my tennis friends to go. They put you in the tennis level you need to be in and play some great competitive tennis.
Go Newks!
The staff is great, in particular the Director Chris Jacques. He has tons of experience and balances great expertise with loads of laughter! You will surely have a good time.
This is it!
This is the best tennis camp. I have been here four times and wanting to go again. I’m also planning on going to the other camp in Florida. Keep up the good work
Just returned from a week at the Tennis Ranch.
I only attended the adult tennis camp (did not stay or eat there). It was a smaller group of 7-8 people in the heat of July in Texas. The instruction was terrific and I really enjoyed myself. It was 5 hours of tennis a day and was a terrific value. I would attend again.
Guaranteed!
It’s the best tennis program in the country! Amazing pros who make it fun while implementing the very best instruction!!!
