Set beside the James River within easy access of historic Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown, Kingsmill Resort takes its name from one of the earliest settlers, Richard Kingsmill, a prominent member of the Virginia Company, which King James I charged with setting up a colony in North America.
The 2,900-acre resort drapes across what was once a plantation. Originally developed in 1969, it now encompasses three 18-hole golf courses, a 15-court tennis complex, a spa and fitness center, a marina, river pool, spring and summer children’s programs, conference facilities, four restaurants, and some 400 condos and cottages.
Director of Racquet Sports Davy Hairston played Division I tennis for the University of Virginia, graduating with a degree in International Relations. He came to Kingsmill Resort late in 2022, having both managed resorts in the Caribbean and Davy Hairston, Kingsmill Resort, Williamsburg, VA taught and directed tennis programs in Virginia and Georgia. At Kingsmill, he has put together a diverse seasonally varied roster that strikes a balance between the neeeds of guests and those of members.
Courts Complex: The facility consists of 13 spaciously laid out Har-Tru courts‐one of them a stadium‐as well as two hard courts and four pickleball courts. A large pro shop looks out across the complex from atop a grassy knoll, making the whole facility an attractive place to play.
Off Court
Golf Courses: Two 18-hole courses meander through the property: the Pete Dye-designed River Course, which borders the James River, and the Plantation Course, which Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay laid out through a landscape of water hazards, ravines, and deep woods.
Spa & Fitness Center: The spa offers a variety of Swedish and therapeutic treatments as well as hair and nail salons. There is also a well-equipped Fitness Center in the Sports Club that houses the tennis pro shop.
There are indoor and outdoor swimming pools at the Sports Club as well as a lazy river near the James River. Bikes are available for use on property or through neighborhoods of Kingsmill. The marina on the James River has slips for 15 transient ships as well as well as a variety of rental watercraft including jet skis, kayaks, pontoon boats, paddle boards, and fishing poles. Finally, scenic running and walking paths lace the resort.
Children's programs: During spring and summer, the resort runs an Explorers Kids Club that bundles sporting activities, swimming, arts and crafts, and other diversions for kids 5 to 12. It offers full-day (9 am-4 pm) and half-day options. Parents looking to entertain their children on their own can make use of the nearby Busch Gardens amusement park.
Dining: There are several dining options, including The Mill, a bakery and coffee shop adjacent to the tennis pro shop; the seasonal James Landing Grille alongside the James River; Eagles in the golf clubhouse; and Elements 1010 for casual family dining with views of the river.
Accommodations
Accommodations, which are scattered around the property in lowrise buildings, range from guest rooms and 1-to-3-bedroom kitchen-equipped condos to 3- and 4-bedroom cottages.
Getting there
Season: Year-round, though tennis season (and the clay-court season) typically extends from March to November.
Travel Instructions: The nearest airport is Virginia’s Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport (PHF), which is 25 minutes’ drive away. The alternatives are Richmond International Airport (RIC) and Norfolk International Airport (ORF), each about 50 minutes drive away
