Set in the courtyard of a 1940s hacienda and bordered by terraced beds of flowers, trees, and its own restaurant, the sunken clubhouse court at the La Quinta Resort & Club has always seemed like a symbol of the resort’s commitment to tennis. Tennis there burst onto the national stage in 1978 when a consortium of former players led by Charlie Pasarell set out to build the finest resort tennis club on the planet. It became one of the first resorts to offer all three playing surfaces—hard, clay, and grass (though the grass is now gone)—and Pasarell and company made sure it rose to national attention by staging a professional tournament that eventually spawned into own stadium. Those were heady days and the tournament was the springboard for what is now the BNP Paribas tournament in nearby Indian Wells.
From the very beginning, I’ve been one of La Quinta’s staunchest partisans. Its Clubhouse Court is hands-down the most beautiful court at a resort anywhere, and the later addition of a spa next door and a courtside fitness center only seemed to add to the allure. At 21 courts—16 hard and 5 Har-Tru—it remains one of the larger resort complexes in the desert, and the facility has supplemented its tennis with the addition of 8 pickleball courts. The setting is magnificent, the rooms exceptionally comfortable, the cuisine excellent.
The original Spanish hacienda-style hotel and its 20 cottages opened in 1926 and immediately attracted Hollywood celebrities and California moguls, who braved 20 miles of bad road beyond Palm Springs to reach this retreat among citrus trees at the foot of the starkly imposing Santa Rosa Mountains. Since then the road has improved and the resort grown to 620 casitas and 98 villas. Yet this doesn’t feel like a large hotel. The scale remains low—nothing taller than two stories—and the rooms have been cleverly arranged around numerous small garden-like courtyards each containing a small swimming pool and hot tub (all in all, there are 41 pools and 53 hot tubs).
Although it is no longer difficult to reach the rest of Palm Springs desert and its many restaurants and galleries, there is little incentive to leave the resort. All the rooms are a short stroll from a flower-bedecked plaza of shops and restaurants, so why get in your car when you can stroll over to the Adobe Grill for fishbowl-size margaritas served in hand-blown glassware from Guadalajara or its superb dishes from various regions of Mexico, like grilled rack of lamb with roasted corn and date tamale from the Yucatan or Caldo de Mariscos, a southwestern bouillabaisse? Unless you’re here in March and have tickets to the Indian Wells Tennis Tournament, you’ll be perfectly content staying on property, playing tennis and relaxing at the spa or around one of the pools.
The consortium that started the tennis club—Charlie Pasarell, Arthur Ashe, Stan Smith, Bob Lutz, Tom Gorman, Marty Riessen, Roscoe Tanner, and Dennis Ralston—guaranteed by location and design that the courts would be a focal point of the resort. Tables from a restaurant and bar, now renamed Centre Court Cafe and filled with tennis photos, spill out onto the flower-filled patio overlooking the sunken clubhouse court. The complex is further anchored by a swimming pool, fitness center, and tennis pro shop. The effect encourages hanging out, before and after matches.
Tennis Staff: Kevin Connolly took over as tennis director on March 1, 2019. A graduate of South Carolina’s Coastal Carolina University, where he played Division 1 NCAA tennis, Connolly has been part of the desert tennis scene since 1992, most recently as the director of the Peter Burwash International-managed Westin Mission Hills Resort. He inherits a well-oiled program, known for its quality game matching and a roster of weekly activities that include drill sessions, clinics, Cardio tennis, and, during periods of peak demand, junior clinics.
Court Complex: There are 21 tennis courts—16 hard and 5 Har-Tru—and 8 pickleball courts.
Off Court
Golf Courses: Golfers who stay here can test themselves on 90 inspired holes, including the TPC Stadium, Jack Nicklaus Tournament, and Greg Norman courses at nearby PGA WEST and the resort’s own Pete Dye Mountain and Dunes courses. If they come up lacking, they can always check into the acclaimed Jim McLean Golf School.
Spa & Fitness Center: La Quinta 23,000-square-foot spa is remarkable for its elegant South of the Border architecture and abundant outdoor treatment rooms that manage to be both private and open to views of the sky, stars, and haunting desert mountains. Workout enthusiasts got a 4,000-square-foot fitness center adjacent to the tennis clubhouse. That handsome building has counterpane windows on both sides, with the cardiovascular equipment set to look out on the courts, and contains a full suite of LifeFitness machines and dumbbells as well. The center also has a lengthy roster of daily workouts, including yoga, Pilates, aqua-aerobics, stretch classes, and power walks.
Accommodations
There are 786 rooms, suites and villas mostly arrayed around gardenlike courtyards with swimming pools and outdoor whirlpools.
Getting there
Seasons: The resort is open year-round but confine your tennis vacation to the period from October to early May. High season typically begins in mid January and extends through April.
Travel Instructions: The resort is 19 miles from Palm Springs International Airport.

This is an absolutely beautiful resort. Our group of 8 intermediate ladies were privelged to receive a couple of lessons from Tom Gorman himself (and Leif and Jim the other pros)and he was incredible. He treated us as if we were great tennis players (we are definately intermediate club players). He made us feel like a million dollars. The tennis courts were in great condition and the clubhouse staff were very friendly. I honestly cannot think of a single weakness.
PK
Under the leadership of Tom Gorman, La Quinta has resumed its position of leadership among tennis resorts. Mr. Gorman, his fellow professional instructors, and the clubhouse staff make this place nothing short of ideal. The staff goes out of its way to arrange matches, and Mr. Gorman and the other pros offer top-flight instruction. There are, simply put, no weaknesses. You will have a blast — great tennis, the opportunity to make some pals, excellent training facilities for those committed to workouts. Five stars all the way.
TT
The courts are in phenominal shape the the tennis staff is very friendly. there are no bad days in La Quinta! I was there a week and got matched to several quality 3.5-4.5 players making my vacation a blast. They also had a complimentary clinic with Tracy Austin that was great for my daughters and I. La Quinta is a great spot for families and tennis. I also got a nice round of golf in on their mountain course.
JS
La Quinta is clearly one of the best and most traditional tennis resorts around! The weather cannot be beat and they have the best staff to help schedule tennis for all levels. They have very experienced tennis professionals who are willing to work with a kid’s strengths and weaknesses. Only downside, is it gets busy during the BNP Parabas tournament!
AF
gorgeous grounds; beautiful weather; Tom Gorman was a super instructor and super nice
MC
Great Weather, Friendly staff, skilled pro’s, picturesque setting, and plenty of oppurtunities to get out and play–La Quinta is the real deal for tennis. With 20+ courts, including clay and hard, and Tom Gorman and other pro’s teaching, everyone has a chance to learn or play. Tracey Austin gives free clinics around Easter and Thanksgiving which are very helpful and fun. I love visiting La Quinta and plan to return.
EF
Excellent and personal instruction. Outstanding customer service. Excellent facilities, especially with adjacent fitness center and spa.
MC
Great weather, great coaching, beautiful setting, great matches.
AH
La Quinta has some of the best instructors we have ever encountered. Great with families. Our kids want to come back year after year, simply for the tennis. Ian and Jim are outstanding instructors.
MD
Strengths: EXCELLENT tennis program… my kids LOVE it & beg to go back there for the clinics as well as individual instruction. The instructors have a wonderful way of making hard work very fun; they remember your name and make you feel very much part of the whole scene. Great facilities, beautiful location. Only weakness is sometimes slow service at the resort for restaurants and administration (check-in/out).
SB
Outstanding facilities, staff, instruction, fitness center in beautiful setting
DB
great facilities, motivating & energetic coaches in a gorgeous setting. picture perfect weather most of the year. with good variety of player levels, there were always good players with which to set up matches. we’d come back for sure!
DK
Great facility, exceptional at setting up games. Many of the players stay at the hotel and practice on the courts during the Indian Wells Tournament in March.
RL
I visited this resort wanting some adult tennis clinics and the tennis atmosphere with the Indian Wells BNP Open at the same time. I use to play tennis alot but as time gets awaay from you and so does your tennis skills I was somewhat shy about my current level. Nevertheless I did attend a few morning adult sessions. The staff was very courteous and helpful and made my class very enjoyable. I felt relaxed and really enjoyed the time spent. I would recommend going here to anyone at any level. Ian, Lief and Jim were great instructors and mde the class fun and entertaining for all levels. I will be back again later this year or same time next year to soak up the tennis at this great resort. Weather was in 80’s in March shich was also a bonus.
AF
Tennis nirvana. Beautiful, low-key, 5 minutes to Indian Wells Tennis Garden. All the pros stay and practice there during BNP Paribas, so what does that tell you?
HN
Greatest resort ever. Great courts. Great tennis game arranging. Best resort in the country.
MK
Tom Gorman and his staff run a superb tennis operation. The courts are in absolutely excellent condition. Go there during the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and you will see ALL the TOP players practinng at La Quinta. Many also stay there. I got to play on a court next to wherre Roger Federer was practicing and was able to speak to him and exchange tennis stories.
CD
The resort offers numerous courts, hardcourt and clay, and pros who really are top notch, foremost the head pro, legendary Tom Gorman, who seems like a “tennis whisperer” in his ability to suss out problems in your game almost instantly. Courts are well taken cared for, and the setting is beautiful. Only “regret” is that the resort no longer keeps grass courts; we visited La Quinta in 1995 and got to play on the two grass courts the resort had at the time, which was an incredible experience. But in the desert it’s easy to understand why that sort of court might not have been smart to maintain year-round. Unlike many other tennis resorts we’ve been to over the years, La Quinta offers so much more than just tennis – fabulous golf, pools, spa, restaraunts, fitness facilities. And the setting can’t be beat!
BL
Beautiful facility; great clinics; great staff. La Quinta offers Ladies Day, Men’s Day, match making, doubles strategy, and daily clinics during the busy season.
BL
I is an interesting and beautiful resort. You can go there any time of the year and you will see fasinating people, famous people and people just like us. It’s the best. The resort is prefectly maintained and the employees are always willing to answer any question or help you in any way.

My wife and I just returned from a 5 day stay at La Quinta Resort. We had both been reasonably decent tennis players but, for various reasons, had stopped playing for several years. Tom Gorman and his excellent staff worked with us to jump start the process of regaining our games. By the time we had left, we were both ecstatic with the progress we had made and were clear on what techniques we needed to practice to complete the complete recapture of our games. The facilities were excellent and the teaching superb. We also used ball machines to practice what we had learned in the private lessons. In addition to the excellent tennis instruction, the setting of the accomodations was fantastic as were the on-property restaurants. We are already planning our return to LaQuinta for our vacation next year.
BB
Whatever your level of play the adult and children tennis clinic were a lot of fun. The professionals were well organized.
BM
Love this place. Very professional coaches and staff. Facilities were great.
PS
I went to the clinic and the coaches and Tom Gorman were excellent.

A friend on my USTA team visits La Quinta regluarly and convinced us to make it stop number five in our post-retirment tennis mini-vacations. Four nights in early December, five gorgeous days, excellent tennis instruction and game matching. The clinics are very informative as well as popular. My wife loved the women’s day play but the men’s was full when we checked in (call ahead to make sure you get put on the list). All the staff are exceptional in helping with all aspects of tennis. An added bonus was finishing Christmas shopping and paying for about half the cost with casino winnings. Really convenient having a heated saltwater pool and spa just outside our casita door. A return visit in 2010? Definitely!

We are a family of 5 with 3 kids – 10yrs(twins) and 11yrs. We live in Singapore and wanted a tennis holiday as we are all keen players. I contacted a number of tennis schools in the Palm Springs area to arrange lessons for the kids (3hrs in the morning & 2 hrs in the afternoon) and for my wife and I (3hrs in the morning) over 7 days. Tom Gorman’s response was the best and La Quinta Resort looked great on the internet. It is a long way from Singapore to La Quinta but the trip was more than worth the effort. Tom and his staff were exceptional. They could not do enough for us. Tom arranged for 3 different coaches over the week for the kids in addition to himself, which gave them input and instruction from slightly different perspectives. My wife and I worked with Tom, who’s insight into the game of tennis is unsurpassed. All of our games have improved. This was topped off by the La Quinta Resort itself having an historic charm which we have not experienced elsewhere. We cannot wait to return.
DV
The tennis courts are wonderful. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I took lessons with Tom Gorman, former Davis Cup Champion, and they were great. Extremely informative and helpful. La Quinta definitely had one of the nicest tennis facilities I have seen.
TT
The courts are always in great shape and the staff is very helpful. i’ve had great luck setting up challenge matches when traveling on vacation. Love the option for clay and hard court. A bit bummed they no longer have grass courts but i guess you can’t have it all. Special bonus is that my family loves to be there due to the weather, pools, golf, and courts.
DT
The tennis staff made sure our experience was first rate. Ian’s cardio lesson was intense and certainly made the muscles burn. This was the best girls getaway ever!
MS
I have been taking tennis lessons for years with minimal impact to my game until I took a lesson with Tom Gorman at La Quinta. He was an incredible instructor and gave me simple tips to improve my serve and forehand. He is an amazing teacher and the environment at La Quinta is second to none.
BK
Tom Gorman and staff were terrific. Worked with our corporate group and made things fun! Plenty of courts and courteouse staff. I would definetly recommend LaQuinta to others.
LB
Excellent one-on-one lessons with Tom Gorman himself!
TP
Tom Gorman was great wih our young children (almost 5 and 8)

My 9 year old son and 15 year old daughter have participated several times in the tennis camps offered at this resort. They are a fabulous way for my kids to learn techniques, sportsmanship, and how to have fun with the game. The coaches are wonderful! They offer creative games to build skills and keep all ages interested. I have a very talkative and active son and they are always positive and able to direct him to focus on tennis in an upbeat and individualized manner. He has learned a great deal and has been asked to play in a tournament in our home state.
TB
The facility is amazing, great hard and clay courts, the fee that they charge to use the courts is OUTRAGEOUS!! you are already paying high rates for the hotel and they tag on an additional $20.00 per night ‘resort” fee but this does not include tennis. Also, we stayed for a week and would have liked to be able to pay a weekly rate, there were four of us that play tennis and $25.00 an hour per court in this economy is ridiculous
KH
We were so impressed with La Quinta. We intended to sit by the pool all week and play maybe one or two days of tennis. Instead we played every single day! The courts are great, the weather is terrific and the staff is super friendly and skilled, especially pro Ian Mindell (whose wife sells amazing salsa by the way). The lessons, doubles clinics, cardio tennis, ladies days, kids clinics were all great! I couldn’t get my 8-year-old son off the court!
RD
GREAT facility with clay and hard, very friendly staf to help arrange games, demonstrations, excellent pros and lessons offered weekly. La Quinta resort has been THE place to be in March during the Indian Wells tournie, as for 2 weeks the best players in the world practice on the club’s center court and entertain guests with practice routines (volley ball tennis with Roddick is a favorite) and matches. Perfect tennisweather every day also helps. The reason the players choose to come there to practice is obvious: the place is a champion’s heaven.
LB
Great atmosphere for tennis. Lots of players and lots of courts, clay and hard. Center Ct. will take your breath away. It has been used by nearly every major tennis pro in the last 20 years. I enjoyed watching the Pros practice during the Indian Wells Tournament. Anyone can play on it with a reservations, no extra charge. Great historic Hotel with unbeleivable grounds, more than 50 acres. Fun teaching Pros and Tom Gorman the Tennis Director. This is a well kept secret.
BB
Outstanding tennis courts, both har-tru and hard surface. 4 extremely helpful knowledgable, teaching Pros. Beauitful desert sourounding and a great historic up-dated hotel with individual units on 60 acres. Fine dinning and the best hot dogs and hamburgers anywhere. The shop staff worked very hard to set-up good gamees with members and other hotel guests.
CP
Amazing tennis facility and world class instruction. Can’t be beat on the west coast!!
CA
Great support staff! They had my wife and me on the court with quality competition whenever we were available. Also, the courts were in perfect condition and the sun was out the whole time! It was a wonderful five days!
BM
What could be better than playing tennis under clear blue skies with beautiful mountain views just over your shoulder? LaQuinta Resort is the perfect setting for tennis, but that’s not the only reason it’s my favorite destination. The Tennis and Fitness Center is superb, and the staff is both knowledgeable and friendly. They make you feel right at home, no matter what level you play. The private lessons I’ve taken have been excellent (especially “Coach Jim”) and the clinics are both challenging and fun! I’ve met some great people on the courts at LaQuinta, both pros and guests alike. I will continue to visit LaQuinta as often as possible to play tennis in “paradise” and highly recommend it to others.
CS
The facility was beautiful the staff courteous and hepful, Tom introduced himself and treated us as if we were pro’s. I vacationed during the 1st week of Indian Wells and have never been so up close and personal with the pro’s who praticed and put on exibitions at different times throughout my stay. The courts played nice and were very well maintained, I plan on vactioning their in the future.
JA
A wonderful resort in a beautiful setting. Great tennis pedigree. Tom Gorman runs a fabulous tennis center with enthusiastic coaches and an efficient game matching service. I would recommend it to anyone.
AM
My family and I have had the pleasure of visiting LaQuinta Resort in the winter months (Christmas/New Year) and again this spring at the height of the BNP Paribas Tournament. Without a doubt, it is a premier tennis experience for any level player. If you love the game of tennis, you will love LaQuinta. My husband and I have four boys and we all play tennis. We have searched for a tennis resort that satisfies our adult tennis needs (clinics, private lessons, court time) as well as those of our children (camps, privates) and have found LaQuinta to be the perfect solution. From the well maintained courts (hard and clay) to the exceptional grounds to the professional teaching staff and courteous pro shop staff, any tennis player feels right at home playing at this resort. Everyone is willing to go above and beyond to ensure a terrific tennis vacation. Aside from the tennis, we also loved the 40 plus pools, the dining, accomodations and the other recreational activiites offered for both adults and children alike. We are anxiously awaiting our next trip to LaQuinta. Every time we go, our tennis games are rejuvenated!
LM
There are many strengths at LaQuinta. The daily clinics were great. I find that I leave every year with a few tips which help me in my team tennis. Also, Cindy set up some challenging doubles matches for me with members and other guests. La Quinta is a magical place to be during the Indian Wells tournament. So many of the top players practice there on center court – so inspiring and such a gorgeous venue!
GR
A week of near perfect tennis. Lessons with Tom Gorman, who provided extremely practical, accessible insight started off a week of great clinics, beneficial private lessons from several helpful pros, and plenty of competitive singles and doubles matches in an unforgettably ideal setting. Will make plans now to return in 2010 for a week.
KM
Excellent accomodations. Staff at tennis club were wonderful. Very helpful!
BR
There are lovely well maintained courts at La Quinta Resort. I thought the instruction was good – not great. It had a well organized office that tried to accommodate court requests but it was very busy and not always possible to get a court when you wanted.
AW
Nice courts, friendly and courteous staffs, tennis pros very skilled. Weakness – very few clinics/drill sessions available.

Amazing tennis facility and world class instruction. Can’t be beat on the west coast!!
Great support staff! They had my wife and me on the court with quality competition whenever we were available. Also, the courts were in perfect condition and the sun was out the whole time! It was a wonderful five days!
A wonderful resort in a beautiful setting. Great tennis pedigree. Tom Gorman runs a fabulous tennis center with enthusiastic coaches and an efficient game matching service. I would recommend it to anyone.
Excellent accomodations. Staff at tennis club were wonderful. Very helpful!
There are lovely well maintained courts at La Quinta Resort. I thought the instruction was good – not great. It had a well organized office that tried to accommodate court requests but it was very busy and not always possible to get a court when you wanted.
Nice courts, friendly and courteous staffs, tennis pros very skilled. Weakness – very few clinics/drill sessions available.
