Set in the courtyard of a 1940s hacienda and bordered by terraced beds of flowers, trees, and its own restaurant, the sunken clubhouse court at the La Quinta Resort & Club has always seemed like a symbol of the resort’s commitment to tennis. Tennis there burst onto the national stage in 1978 when a consortium of former players led by Charlie Pasarell set out to build the finest resort tennis club on the planet. It became one of the first resorts to offer all three playing surfaces—hard, clay, and grass (though the grass is now gone)—and Pasarell and company made sure it rose to national attention by staging a professional tournament that eventually spawned into own stadium. Those were heady days and the tournament was the springboard for what is now the BNP Paribas tournament in nearby Indian Wells.
From the very beginning, I’ve been one of La Quinta’s staunchest partisans. Its Clubhouse Court is hands-down the most beautiful court at a resort anywhere, and the later addition of a spa next door and a courtside fitness center only seemed to add to the allure. At 21 courts—16 hard and 5 Har-Tru—it remains one of the larger resort complexes in the desert, and the facility has supplemented its tennis with the addition of 8 pickleball courts. The setting is magnificent, the rooms exceptionally comfortable, the cuisine excellent.
The original Spanish hacienda-style hotel and its 20 cottages opened in 1926 and immediately attracted Hollywood celebrities and California moguls, who braved 20 miles of bad road beyond Palm Springs to reach this retreat among citrus trees at the foot of the starkly imposing Santa Rosa Mountains. Since then the road has improved and the resort grown to 620 casitas and 98 villas. Yet this doesn’t feel like a large hotel. The scale remains low—nothing taller than two stories—and the rooms have been cleverly arranged around numerous small garden-like courtyards each containing a small swimming pool and hot tub (all in all, there are 41 pools and 53 hot tubs).
Although it is no longer difficult to reach the rest of Palm Springs desert and its many restaurants and galleries, there is little incentive to leave the resort. All the rooms are a short stroll from a flower-bedecked plaza of shops and restaurants, so why get in your car when you can stroll over to the Adobe Grill for fishbowl-size margaritas served in hand-blown glassware from Guadalajara or its superb dishes from various regions of Mexico, like grilled rack of lamb with roasted corn and date tamale from the Yucatan or Caldo de Mariscos, a southwestern bouillabaisse? Unless you’re here in March and have tickets to the Indian Wells Tennis Tournament, you’ll be perfectly content staying on property, playing tennis and relaxing at the spa or around one of the pools.
The consortium that started the tennis club—Charlie Pasarell, Arthur Ashe, Stan Smith, Bob Lutz, Tom Gorman, Marty Riessen, Roscoe Tanner, and Dennis Ralston—guaranteed by location and design that the courts would be a focal point of the resort. Tables from a restaurant and bar, now renamed Centre Court Cafe and filled with tennis photos, spill out onto the flower-filled patio overlooking the sunken clubhouse court. The complex is further anchored by a swimming pool, fitness center, and tennis pro shop. The effect encourages hanging out, before and after matches.
Tennis Staff: Kevin Connolly took over as tennis director on March 1, 2019. A graduate of South Carolina’s Coastal Carolina University, where he played Division 1 NCAA tennis, Connolly has been part of the desert tennis scene since 1992, most recently as the director of the Peter Burwash International-managed Westin Mission Hills Resort. He inherits a well-oiled program, known for its quality game matching and a roster of weekly activities that include drill sessions, clinics, Cardio tennis, and, during periods of peak demand, junior clinics.
Court Complex: There are 21 tennis courts—16 hard and 5 Har-Tru—and 8 pickleball courts.
Off Court
Golf Courses: Golfers who stay here can test themselves on 90 inspired holes, including the TPC Stadium, Jack Nicklaus Tournament, and Greg Norman courses at nearby PGA WEST and the resort’s own Pete Dye Mountain and Dunes courses. If they come up lacking, they can always check into the acclaimed Jim McLean Golf School.
Spa & Fitness Center: La Quinta 23,000-square-foot spa is remarkable for its elegant South of the Border architecture and abundant outdoor treatment rooms that manage to be both private and open to views of the sky, stars, and haunting desert mountains. Workout enthusiasts got a 4,000-square-foot fitness center adjacent to the tennis clubhouse. That handsome building has counterpane windows on both sides, with the cardiovascular equipment set to look out on the courts, and contains a full suite of LifeFitness machines and dumbbells as well. The center also has a lengthy roster of daily workouts, including yoga, Pilates, aqua-aerobics, stretch classes, and power walks.
Accommodations
There are 786 rooms, suites and villas mostly arrayed around gardenlike courtyards with swimming pools and outdoor whirlpools.
Getting there
Seasons: The resort is open year-round but confine your tennis vacation to the period from October to early May. High season typically begins in mid January and extends through April.
Travel Instructions: The resort is 19 miles from Palm Springs International Airport.

Both of us (one experienced tennis player; one a beginner) found LaQuinta Resort to offer the perfect tennis vacation – morning clinics with talented and extremely helpful (and fun) pros, and a very welcoming staff at the tennis center. We have been twice this year. Of course, best is being there during the PGA tournament. Players stay at LaQuinta and practice daily on the courts. Very exciting.
BH
From the beautiful desert scenery and climate to the superb level of instruction and service, La Quinta Resort and Tennis club is the best in the industry. La Quinta’s friendly, knowledgeable staff and pros operate at a level superior to all others. My 3 gals pals and I discovered we had learned more in one week than years of tennis instruction. Under the direction of Tom Gorman, coaches Wolavka, Mindell, Leif and Flesch, all have an eye for deciphering the details and tiny adjustments required for individual improvement. We all left as better players, equipped with new skills, game & practice plans, enthusiasm and a lifetime full of cherished memories! Thank you La Quinta Â
JG
Best tennis desk in the country. Superb on setting up games and follow-thru. Terrific facility in every respect. Â
BH
Fabulous tennis vacation with excellent clinics by competent and friendly staff who were pros at working with the mix of beginners and more advanced attendees while providing useful tips aimed at each individuals’ level of readiness. Attentive and helpful desk staff. Great full service resort (pools, hot tubs, restaurants etc) Â

I highly recommend LaQuinta for a tennis getaway. The teaching staff is outstanding. I hadn’t visited in over a year and the staff remembered me and my game. A simple gesture, but one with great significance to me. The Pro Shop staff went out of their way to schedule clinics and matches for me, as we had rain during our visit. I thought my long tennis weekend was going to become a “wash-out”, but to my surprise, I played more than I had intended due to their diligence. I could go on and on, but I’ll keep it simple…visit LaQuinta soon and often, you will not be disappointed! Â

Three days of FANTASTIC tennis at La Quinta! Sibling reunion – 10 adults – skill levels from beginner to USTA champs. Tom Gorman had tips, tricks and drills to meet all of our needs! Everyone walked away with new techniques to practice at home. The resort is one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited.
MO
Tom Gorman was incredible. I organized a family reunion and with 8 of us varied in ages and levels he made 3 days of clinics really fun and valuable to all of us. Our rooms were gorgeous and we are planning another family reunion again at La Quinta next year! Â
JB
On a recent stay at La Quinta Resort I was mosted impressed with Tom Gorman, Director of Tennis, his program and the facility. I was part of group staying at the resort, and all of us plan to return for another great tennis experience and the wonderful amenities at this resort. We will return and tell our friends to go visit this resort. Â
LF
Tom Gorman and La Quinta resort made my tennis team’s experience fabulous. We have had clinics with Tom for 3 years and highly recommend him to other tennis teams. Â

I enjoyed the wonderful experience of Tom Gorman’s teaching at La Quinta Resort recently. I was most impressed with the resort and with him and his facility. My entire group of tennis players were really excited with the resort and time spent in La Quinta. We will tell all our friends and will return often. Five Stars to Tom and his great program at one of the most beautiful resorts ever! Â
JC
La Quinta is the finest tennis resort my wife and I have ever experienced. The atmosphere was very elegant and casual at the same time. The head pro Tom Gorman made the tennis fun and a great learning experience. We are devinitely recommending this resort to our friends and will return in the near future. Â
LC
Tom Gorman, the Director of Tennis, is a superb instructor and runs a first-class facility with a highly professional staff. I’m a tournament-level senior player and Tom provided tremendous insights while putting me completely at ease. A couple of lessons with Tom delivers more usable information than many pros can provide in a lifetime. Â
PP
The most beautiful setting for tennis….great friendly staff for both kids and adults…picturesque and they have maintained the grounds beautifully. Â
EM
Coach Tom Gorman’s tennis program is exceptional. His staff includes wonderful coaches.Ian, Lief and Jim are terrific instructors for juniors and adults. These coaches take the time to get to know their students as people and as tennis players. The advice offered has always improved our games as well as our sons. We have been fortunate to take many tennis vacations and this program tops the list. The courts are also maintained beautifully!
JD
The setting is spectacularly beautiful, the facilities are awesome and the instruction is the best we’ve ever experienced. We’d recommend La Quinta without reservation. Â

It would be difficult to imagine a more perfect tennis teaching experience than that at La Quinta! Our family enjoys cardio and drill clinics at resorts across the country. The organization, instruction and friendliness of the La Quinta staff tops them all. I’d have to search hard for a weakness but perhaps the beginning drills were too advanced, but they make them work well, and provide encouragement and improvement for all levels.

This is an AMAZING spot to vacation. The facility is beautiful, the tennis pro’s are great! Tom Gorman fixed my serve in 20 min. The food and wait staff treated us like pro VIP’s and the weather was perfect. It was the first week of December and a great break from the upcoming holiday season. I played tennis on every surface as well as a few matches on the beautiful center court. Can’t wait to go again. Â
JM
The Pro Staff is 5 star. Tom Gorman, Director of Tennis, is a substantial part of US Tennis History. The grounds of the resort are OZ like with dinning at the resort and the City of La Quinta there are more choices than days in most vacation. If golf is also on your agenda The Resort and PGA West have the challenge for you. This is the “Total package” for fun in the sun year round, just bring sunscreen and a Panama Hat for summer months. Play early and relax by or in the pool in the afternoon. This is The Place to Be. Â
DF
First Class facilities and staff! Gorgeous property – 5 Star in every way. This is one of the top resorts in the world.
MB
La Quinta offers the best of everything – first class tennis facilities and instruction, five star accommodations & dining, beautiful grounds, attentive staff – all in an idyllic, casual and unpretentious setting. Tom Gorman and his staff are incredibly patient and able to tailor instruction to your needs. With 23 courts and over 53 hot spas, La Quinta is a tennis lovers dream! Â

La Quinta Resort was a fantastic destination for a tennis vacation. The setting is so beautiful, the weather is great and the coaching staff are invaluable.

One of the best trips I have ever taken. Went on a group trip with members of my tennis club. Beautiful grounds, exceptional food and top notch facilities. Loved the private feel of accomodations and the many pools and hot tubs for all the casitas. Playing on center court was a highlight, as well as playing barefoot on the grass at PGA West facilities. Tom Gorman and staff went out of their way to provide us with a memorable experience. Participated in clinics, round robins and match play and played on grass, hard courts and clay. Â
SM
UNBELIEVABLE! Superb accommodations, hospitality and tennis opportunities. we were treated like royalty and had non stop fun and great tennis. Can’t wait to go back. Â

This was the most AMAZING 4 days. The resort is beautiful, the courts are amazing and the staff is top notch. We also had the extreme pleasure of spending time with Tom Gorman, as a tennis fan, this was a once in a lifetime experience- except I am already hoping for a repeat trip! I do not have a single negative thing to say! We had wonderful clinics and then were able to have match play with local tennis members. We played hard courts, clay and grass all in the same day! The rooms were amazing and the 42 pools and spas spread out throughout the resort were wonderful. The food was also fabulous. I would tell anyone who asks-this is a MUST for any tennis fan (although, with the golf and other activities, you don’t even need to play tennis to love La Quinta).
JJ
Best Vacation my wife and I have had in 20 years of being married! Enough tennis and golf for both of us to not get bored. We were treated like royalty — from cozy robes in our room to use in the 42 swimming pools and jacuzzis to the warm fireplace in our room and all over the property. The teaching staff at the tennis facility was knowledgable and very friendly. Always someone to play with. The golf was AWESOME and that coming from someone who has lived in golf heaven all his life — Hawaii! Â
LL
The tennis pros are 5 star. With Tom Gorman as Director this resort has taken huge steps upwards over the past years. The accomadations meet any desires, from a basic hotel room to a villa you can have it at the La Quinta Resort. Recreation is anything that does not need an ocean. Weather is fantastic and the food is whatever you want at the resort from the pool bar/cafe to 5***** dining, add in the restaurants of La Quinta, Palm Deasert and Rancho Mirage and you have to bust it on the courts and gym for at least 4 hrs a day. A must go. Â
NW
Had a great tennis vacation at La Quinta. They had matches for my wife and I every day and my kids attended the Junior camp. The coaches were fun and instructive with all the kids. My kids wanted to keep going every day. Â
AW
La Quinta is so  beautiful, always able to play tennis, great family place, our kids had a blast at the kids camp and had wonderful lessons from the pros. They are great with the kids, so motiviating, funny and awesome teachers. We had so much fun and the all of the staff are super nice and helpful. Great vacation spot for tennis lovers or even if you don’t play tennis. Surrounded by mountains, great weather, tons of courts and pools.
MG
It’s already the third time we go there, with my wife and my daughter, and we couldnt find a better way to spend the holidays. Tennis is treated very seriously, but tediously and heavy, there was a great clinic with Tracy Austin, who has an incredible energy and passionfor the game, she helped everybody, from the little kids with the racket in hand for the first time, to the semi-pro teens. Bottom line, the best place you can pick for family and tennis. Â
GV
I’ve recently turned 50 and have noticed a deterioration of my game. Jim and Ian were superb in reminding me what is essential in a forehand and backhand stroke to keep the level of competition elevated. It was refreshing to hear a new explanation of the basic strokes, hear a lot of what players my age tend to do, and ultimately focus on getting back to proper mechanics and improving the quality of my game. This is the third year in a row I’ve looked forward to taking lessons/clinics at La Quinta resort because the coaches/teachers are cheerful, helpful (they always make it a point to memorize all players names; a nice touch) and make it a goal to personalize each relationship and instruction to each individual.
JJ
great coaches and excellent instruction; friendly staff; Coach Jim is wonderful w/ kids
RC
Superb tennis instruction with previously nationally ranked tennis pros, director previously ranked #8 in world. World class facilities and friendly helpful staff in world class resort in Southern California. It does not get any better than this. Â

This is our 5th year attending the La Quinta Tennis Camp and we love the program. My son was introduced to the sport of tennis via one of their camps and now plays 4 days a week at home in Minnesota. We attend their camps twice a year (Thanksgiving & Easter). The tennis pros are wonderful with kids, they are able to keep the kids very engaged and focus yet they keep it fun. My son and daughter always looked forward to going to the camp! The facilities are also great, you couldn’t ask for a better view (mountains) and the weather is almost always perfect. We highly recommend there tennis programs to anyone with a passion for the sport! Â
LP
I visited the resort with 7 other girls from Texas and we had the best time. The drills were great, I never wanted them to stop. But since we could play again later it was no problem. The couryard setting for the casitas made it easy to be with your friends at the private pool and treat it like your own back yard. I can’t wait to go again and I hope I can drill more with Tom, Ian and Leif. Have a great season and see you soon.Â
DK
Overall, La Quinta is a great resort. There is plenty to do for everyone, especially tennis, golf and of course, swimming. For the runner in you there is also a beautiful trail that runs near the resort that travels alongside the mountains and a wash gully – very pretty area. We’ve been coming to La Quinta for almost 10 years, every Thanksgiving, as a family reunion. We rent out 5-6 villas in the Santa Rosa Cove or Tennis Villas, for the the 28 of us. Â For the last several years we’ve put our kids in the group lessons offered and they have been excellent. The coaches – Jim, Ian and Leif, are great with kids. They have the right level of energy, discipline and enthusiasm. Our kids love the lessons and are excited to go every year. The games the coaches use keep the lessons at a fast paced, with inventive games like tennis ‘pinball’ and ‘tower of terror’ that I can only wish I had as a kid taking lessons a long time ago! Kudos to the La Quinta team for fomenting such fun program for the kids. We’ve noticed how the tennis lessons over the years have just gotten better and better, and all the coaches are here year after year, which is a great sign of consistency and growth with the program.

Houston, Texas ladies had the pleasure to visit LaQuinta Resort & Club last week. What an awesome facility! We were very fortunate to have instuctions from Coach Tom, Coach Ian and Coach Leif. Focused on doubles drills, very challenging & informative. Have full intentions of returning to La Quinta someone! Thank you Ladies in the pro shop as well, we felt right at home.

Cindy and her staff are great at setting up matches….the Courts are great and everyone is friendly

A tennis paradise! I was there during the BNP Paribas Tournament and it was a delight to see all the top players who were staying at the Resort. Tom Gorman does a great job organizing tennis for guests plus keepnig the stars happy!

For the last several years we’ve put our kids in the group lessons offered and they have been excellent.
