The 18-story Naples Grande Beach Resort anchors a 23-acre property just inland from the Gulf of Mexico behind a 200-acre mangrove estuary called Clam Pass Park. From the balcony of my room, I can look west across those mangroves and east across the red-tile roofs of the tennis villas and the 15 Har-Tru courts of the tennis complex beyond.
As is often true in Florida, activity on the courts has started early; everyone, it seems, wants to play in the mornings and in fact I’ll be there shortly to join a men’s drill session. But though the courts are already busy, the hotel lobby is almost deserted. There is, I’ve been told, a large conference group in house; however, the meeting rooms are mostly on the second floor—an escalator ride up from the lobby—and thus out of the mainstream, leaving me with the sense of having the hotel largely to myself.
That circumstance is unusual, and not typical of my previous visits to the property. Though set up to handle large conference groups, the hotel also has the amenities to attract leisure guests, chief among them a 7-mile-long ribbon of sand along the Gulf of Mexico. To reach the beach and the resort’s watersports center, guests can hop a free shuttle or stroll along a .6-mile-long boardwalk that winds through the mangroves and over a canoe trail. To that natural feature the hotel adds a suite of distractions of its own, including a free-form swimming pool with a waterslide and waterfall and a second oval pool with cabanas and a hot tub, a pool-front fitness center, a spa, a kids club (also right off the pool), golf privileges, a lobby restaurant and bar, and, of course, tennis.
The main cluster of courts fans out from a single-story red-roofed air-conditioned pro shop with a flatscreen TV, basic tennis essentials, limited clothing and equipment, and a display of wooden racquets. The tennis-management company Peter Burwash International (PBI) installed Scott Pennington to direct the facility. Originally from Virginia, he played college tennis for Virginia Commonwealth and then headed to Europe where he played German Club team tennis and cycled around the E.U., including a trip from Prague to Vienna. He brings an extensive tennis resume to Naples, including a USPTA Elite certification, stints as a USTA Competition Training Center coach, National Zonal Coach, and Southern Section Davis/Fed Cup coach and experience at a variety of clubs in South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, and Florida.
Tennis Programs: In any given week, guests can look forward to daily clinics, cardio tennis, group and private and group lessons, monthly member and guest events, and more. His staff includes a full-time tennis attendant to see to all player needs include matching. A local membership ensures a base for the drill sessions and activities as well as for guests looking for a game, and the hotel allows outsiders to play, so even on occasions when the hotel itself has few players, the courts see a lot of use.
Court Complex: There are 15 Har-Tru courts, 5 of them with lights, just a 2-minute walk from the hotel lobby.

Beach: A boardwalk through a mangrove estuary connects the hotel with a 7-mile-long beach on the Gulf of Mexico.
Golf: Guests have privileges at the nearby Naples Grande Golf Club, a par-72 layout designed by Rees Jones.
Spa and Fitness Center: The Zen-inspired Spa at Naples Grandehas 12 treatment rooms in a cluster of pavilions set in gardens just above the swimming pools. Before and after treatments guests have access to an outdoor relaxation space with lounges and to a labyrinth for meditation. Light lunches are available from a special spa menu. The Fitness Center, which spans 8,000-square feet, overlooks the mangrove estuary from the 3rd floor. A room key provides access 24/7 to the workout room, sauna, steam, and lockers supplemented by a yoga studio. Personal trainers are available.
Children's Programs: The hotel runs a kids’ program for those ages 4 to 12, basing in out of a room off the swimming pool and entertaining them with arts and crafts, video games, television, and sports and recreation.
Dining: Coffee, pastries, and breakfast sandwiches are available at Spressi in the hotel lobby while Aura serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with an emphasis on locally. Dinner options range from small plates, to flatbreads, pasta, and local grouper. For drinks, you can head to the simply title The Bar in the hotel lobby.

This was our first time in Naples for tennis. The facilities were terrific and a very active club. The clinics were a great mix of abilities and found them both fun and helpful. The best part of the trip was working with the 2 Pros there, Donald and Paulo. I felt I really improved and they quickly targeted areas of my play that would help me improve the most. We had lessons, participated in daily clinics that were really excellent and Donlat was able to get me matches every afternoon. We both made great improvement that stayed with our games, and the recognition by the pros of some small changes that made major impact speaks to the experience and professionalism both Donald and Paolo bring to the sport. In addition it was a really nice, friendly and social place where we both felt at home after the first hour! We highly recommend the resort as a great winter getaway to brush up on our game!

The PBI Tennis Center, overseen by the Director of Tennis – Adri Atkinson, at the Naples Grande Beach Resort is an outstanding tennis and resort venue. As much as we love the resort location, Gulf views, service, food and amenities we love the tennis there even more. Adri runs great group clinics as well as some of the best individual hitting and/or lesson sessions I have been engaged in. Adri is both technically proficient – and transfers that to your stroke and game, but she also provides convincing encouragement to execute the shots you are working on. Critically, Adri is very personable and puts fun, along with some work, into striving to make you a better shot-maker and overall player. We usually travel down to Naples a couple of times a year to stay at the resort – but we usually make that trip because we are actually more excited just to hit with Adri. The resort and the PBI Tennis Center is a great place to be for a week or two!

I participated in two different tennis activities while I was staying at the resort. The first was a clinic that had different levels involved, but the pros were able to make the clinic beneficial for everyone involved. The did a good job on keeping the pace going and making it fun and still taught some great skill drills. The second thing I did was to take a private lesson with Chip. I had asked what I wanted to work on and told him that I wanted him to play a few games with me so he could see which parts of my game he thought he could most help me with. He did a great job, explained techniques in a way that I would be able to work on them on my own once I returned home. I really feel that this was a place to go not only for the accommodations, but also for the tennis and the pro’s that were there to help.

Just returned from an awesome vacation with my tennis gals! We played two hours and took two hour clinics each day for our 4 day getaway. Lots of great tennis! Courts in great shape. Thoroughly enjoyed our clinic time with Chip, Ian and Adri who made every lesson exciting and fun! Learned some good strategy to take back with us to our USTA matches – everyone learned and left playing way better than we started! We always search out a Peter Burwash International tennis resort FIRST when planning a trip. You can pick up with one of the outstanding pros anywhere and continue on your “learning ladder”. That said, The PBI tennis center at Naples Grande Beach Resort pulls us back for repeat visits (from New York) whenever we can. Yes, the hotel is great and comfy, but the time spent on the court playing tennis with 1 of their pros UPS your game while having a great time- you can’t beat that combination! Adri, Chip, Ian make a great team……..I am already dreaming of when I can go back!

Tennis is always fun at the PBI center at the Naples Grande Resort. The pro’s are friendly and certainly know their tennis, whether it is in a clinic or a private lesson. This year I got to know Chip Shade after knowing his younger brother JD Shade for a few seasons. Chip is very friendly and knows his tennis, but most importantly he and his colleagues Adri (the tennis Director) and Ian stress that most of us are there to have lots of fun while playing energetic tennis. Everyone on staff is cheerful and always send us home with a smile.

I pick vacation resorts that have tennis courts and tennis pros to hit with. Naples Grande is the place to stay in Naples if you like tennis. Lots of clay courts. And the pros are terrific. I hit with Chip Shade 3 times and my son hit with both Chip and Ian. They make it fun and you get a good workout with an hour lesson. Good tips during the course of the hit in a very relaxed hitting session. I highly recommend the experience. Plus, as a bonus, Stan Smith and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario were there for a business conference.

My wife and I spent a week in Naples and, although we did not stay at the resort, we took full advantage of the excellent tennis facilities there. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We had a very good lesson with Chip, and also participated in a clinic. Our only minor complaint was that the clinic focused solely on doubles strategy and did not include any stroke instruction. Chip and the staff took very good care of us and we would highly recommend this resort to others.

I recently spent a long weekend at the Naples Grande so that I could participate in the PBI Cup. This was my second experience with Adri Atkinson and the great staff at the Naples Grande Tennis Club. I am from MA and played in the event as a guest, and was treated like a regular at the Club not only by the staff but also by the other players. Adri paired me up with another player for the first day of the doubles event and I could not have asked for a better partner – which is a testament to the type of players they attract in Naples. I would absolutely recommend the Club to anyone who is vising Naples, or who happens to be traveling through that area and wants to get out on some very well-maintained clay courts. The coaching is solid and Adri is always there to greet you with a big smile. The intangibles set Naples Grande Tennis Club apart.

We had an odd number for doubles so he alternately rallied with different partners while the rest of us played a game. The prices were reasonable. I then returned solo to take his morning clinic. Tennis instruction from Adri, Brendan, and Chip was excellent for 9 ladies from our Nalta team in Tennessee. The 3 were energetic, fun, and organized with our morning and afternoon clinics. Adri kept in touch before and during our stay at Naples Grande Resort. It rained for 1.5 days, but the tennis staff was ready to go the next day! We learned some new tennis strategies, and we also worked on this during clinic with the pros. The only negative I could see was a small tennis shop, but this was very minor. The small restaurant, Aura, has very slow and poor service; food is minimal; this was the weakest part of the vacation.

We (6 ladies) were traveling to Naples for a quick get-a-way from the cold up North. We did not stay on the resort so my review is just for tennis. I communicated Brenden prior to our arrival. I was able to set up a two day private clinic with Brenden which was very easy. He answered all my questions…even where to go for dinner. The instruction was great and very flexible. The tennis complex was nice, lots of courts. The pro shop could have been stocked with a little more. The cost was a little higher then other locations but the communication and amenities made us choose Naples Grande. We loved Brenden and would return.

We had a fantastic stay at Naples Grande. There was a big group of U.S. and we all loved the instruction we got on the tennis courts. Brendan, Adri, Lino, Chip, all the staff were amazing. The club was a little tired. Rusted fences, the spectator benches were warped and loose, some cracked pavements etc. The place needs some TLC. I took a hitting lesson with a nice pro Chip who hit with me ( I was 7 week post knee surgery) so we rallied cooperatively, and hit some volleys. Nice guy gave me plenty of time, and was gracious with his time afterwards to talk some tennis. Pro shop poorly stocked.

Thoroughly enjoyed our clinic time with Chip, Ian and Adri who made every lesson exciting and fun! Learned some good strategy to take back with us to our USTA matches – everyone learned and left playing way better than we started! They are extremely professional and talented and really enjoyed themselves on the courts with our group! Highly recommend!
We always search out a Peter Burwash International tennis resort FIRST when planning a trip. You can pick up with one of the outstanding pros anywhere and continue on your “learning ladder”. That said, The PBI tennis center at Naples Grande Beach Resort pulls us back for repeat visits (from New York) whenever we can. Yes, the hotel is great and comfy, but the time spent on the court playing tennis with 1 of their pros UPS your game while having a great time- you can’t beat that combination! Adri, Chip, Ian make a great team……..I am already dreaming of when I can go back!
This resort had great courts with a strong support from the pros. I did a clinic, 2 sessions with pros, and lots of doubles with a local group and thoroughyl enjoyed my time there. PBI seems to consistently provide great tennis experiences!
Tennis is always fun at the PBI center at the Naples Grande Resort. The pro’s are friendly and certainly know their tennis, whether it is in a clinic or a private lesson. This year I got to know Chip Shade after knowing his younger brother JD Shade for a few seasons. Chip is very friendly and knows his tennis, but most importantly he and his colleagues Adri (the tennis Director) and Ian stress that most of us are there to have lots of fun while playing energetic tennis. Everyone on staff is cheerful and always send us home with a smile.
I pick vacation resorts that have tennis courts and tennis pros to hit with. Naples Grande is the place to stay in Naples if you like tennis. Lots of clay courts. And the pros are terrific. I hit with Chip Shade 3 times and my son hit with both Chip and Ian. They make it fun and you get a good workout with an hour lesson. Good tips during the course of the hit in a very relaxed hitting session. I highly recommend the experience. Plus, as a bonus, Stan Smith and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario were there for a business conference.

I highly recommend the tennis program at Naples Grande Beach Resort. Chip Shade is an excellent instructor and a great guy. I participated in his clinics every morning and they were fun, a good workout and a great way to start the day. I also took a private lesson with Chip which is fabulous! I learned a lot and had fun doing it. Chip has a very friendly, relaxed, positive way about him and he was also one of the best instructors I’ve ever had.
My wife and I spent a week in Naples and, although we did not stay at the resort, we took full advantage of the excellent tennis facilities there. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We had a very good lesson with Chip, and also participated in a clinic. Our only minor complaint was that the clinic focused solely on doubles strategy and did not include any stroke instruction. Chip and the staff took very good care of us and we would highly recommend this resort to others.
What an incredible time at Naples Grande Beach resort with Chip Shade. I am new to tennis and my lessons with Chip were great. Such a good teacher and he made it very enjoyable. Fast paced, efficient, and fun. Just what i was looking for. Thanks Chip for introducing me to tennis! Shane SD
Chip and the staff were very accommodating for our group. They provided a first class clinic tailor made to the abilities of our group. I highly recommend this facility and lessons with Chip. I have been taking clinics and lessons for about 25 years and my experience was excellent. I will be putting together a huge group of tennis players for a girls tennis trip based on my experience at the Naples Grande Resort. For reference, our level is 4.5 and we have a ton of collective experience with tennis trainers and facilities. This was an A+!!! Can’t wait to come back!

March 2016 was my first time at the Naples Grande and my family and I had a great time and the tennis was the icing on the cake! The clinics were very helpful and the private sessions with Chip and Brendan will go a long way toward getting my game ready for summer. Thank you very much to Adri and team!
I go to the Naples Grand (and have been for the past 5 years) because of the fantastic tennis instruction, specifically Adri, the the head pro there. Not only has she taught me the strategy behind the game of tennis, but she makes the lessons and the game of tennis so much fun. In 25 years of playing tennis, no teacher has improved my game like Adri – she has brought my game to the next level.
The tennis instructors at the Naples Grande, and Adri in particular, are phenomenal. Very skilled and fun. There are many courts to play on and they are very well-kept. The hotel is great as well- nice beach and near lots of good restaurants.
The pros are phenomenal teachers.
For the past five years, my husband and I have visited Naples Grande twice a year. Adri Atkinson and her staff have always welcomed us warmly adding to the enjoyment of our stay at the hotel. This past March we brought our 10 yr. old grandson who was introduced to tennis for the first time. He had daily lessons with Brendan Easterling who turned him into a tennis devotee. The instruction was perfectly geared to a child. He learned so much and enjoyed every time playing because of Brendan’s skill.
Our family’s experience at the Naples Grande Beach Resort was excellent! One of the main reasons we have chosen (twice) to stay at the Naples Grande twice is the great tennis facility. We were welcomed by the friendly staff especially Natasha. We enjoyed daily family tennis on the well-maintained Har Tru courts, and both the kids and I enjoyed taking lessons from the pros Brendan and Chip. These guys really know their stuff! And they are super fun and friendly.
this was a great tennis experience. the pro chip shade was wonderful. i was coming off a illness and he brought me back perfectly,not too fast or too slow. iam now back home playing better than ever ! i shall be indebted to him forever.
My family and I visit the Naples Grande tennis program every year, and it is always exceptional. The staff there Adri, Chip and Brendan are terrific and very skilled teachers. They easily taught my entire family including kids ages 7, 11 1nd 14 as well as my husband and myself. The atmosphere is lively and very good tennis players attended the daily clinics, always a good challenge. The tennis program is a significant reason why we always return to Naples, it never disappoints!
I recently had a stay at the Naples Grand Beach Resort. My goal was to get some tennis help-forehand was falling apart. Chip Shade broke it down and was a huge help to get me back on track! I love this tennis pro, he is the best! The resort is very nice, 14 tennis courts and well managed.
I recently spent a long weekend at the Naples Grande so that I could participate in the PBI Cup. This was my second experience with Adri Atkinson and the great staff at the Naples Grande Tennis Club. I am from MA and played in the event as a guest, and was treated like a regular at the Club not only by the staff but also by the other players. Adri paired me up with another player for the first day of the doubles event and I could not have asked for a better partner – which is a testament to the type of players they attract in Naples. I would absolutely recommend the Club to anyone who is vising Naples, or who happens to be traveling through that area and wants to get out on some very well-maintained clay courts. The coaching is solid and Adri is always there to greet you with a big smile. The intangibles set Naples Grande Tennis Club apart.
Chip Shade the tennis pro was great. We arrived and he immediately made us feel comfortable. We had an odd number for doubles so he alternately rallied with different partners while the rest of us played a game. The prices were reasonable. I then returned solo to take his morning clinic. He was excellent at evaluating our games and very strategic in keeping u engaged at very different levels. I would highly recommend Chip’s morning clinic.
Tennis instruction from Adri, Brendan, and Chip was excellent for 9 ladies from our Nalta team in Tennessee. The 3 were energetic, fun, and organized with our morning and afternoon clinics. Adri kept in touch before and during our stay at Naples Grande Resort. It rained for 1.5 days, but the tennis staff was ready to go the next day! We learned some new tennis strategies, and we also worked on this during clinic with the pros. The only negative I could see was a small tennis shop, but this was very minor. The small restaurant, Aura, has very slow and poor service; food is minimal; this was the weakest part of the vacation.
I can’t say enough about the team of pros at naples grande beach resort. They handled our awkward group of 9 very well, kept us moving, we learned a lot. The resort is pricy, but the tennis program makes it worth it. Highly recommended,,
just got back from Naples and though the weather left something to be desired my tennis lessons with Chip were exceptional. I took home many usable tips for my game and Chip was very positive and encouraging .As I was not staying at the Naples Grande I was very surprised I could access such a high level program. next time I visit Naplesi will stay at the resort to have easier access to the tennis
Second year in a row taking lessons from head pro Brendan Easterling, what a great instructor! Brendan makes instruction fun! He works to make the chances in your game become habit. All aspects of my game have improved tremendously due to working with Brendan. Wish I lived closer so I could hit with him more often. Naples Grande has a great tennis facility. Great setting and the courts are in great shape.
My husband and I made a return visit to Naples Grande solely because we enjoyed the tennis instruction so much. Adri, Chip and Brenden are excellent instructors. You walk away definitely feeling like you have elevated your game. Looking forward to going back as soon as we can.
Another great vacation at NRG. Adri, Chip and Brendan run a great programme with lots of fun and social aspects. I took a number of private lessons with Brendan who really improved the requested aspects of my game. It’s difficult to think of a nicer environment to play and enjoy the game. Looking forward to visiting Stanglwirt, as well.
We (6 ladies) were traveling to Naples for a quick get-a-way from the cold up North. We did not stay on the resort so my review is just for tennis. I communicated Brenden prior to our arrival. I was able to set up a two day private clinic with Brenden which was very easy. He answered all my questions…even where to go for dinner. The instruction was great and very flexible. The tennis complex was nice, lots of courts. The pro shop could have been stocked with a little more. The cost was a little higher then other locations but the communication and amenities made us choose Naples Grande. We loved Brenden and would return.
We had a fantastic stay at Naples Grande. There was a big group of U.S. and we all loved the instruction we got on the tennis courts. Brendan, Adri, Lino, Chip, all the staff were amazing. We loved all the different drills and exercises we tried but most of all I enjoyed the encouraging and positive feed back we got from each coach. Definitely a program I would try again.
The club was a little tired. Rusted fences, the spectator benches were warped and loose, some cracked pavements etc. The place needs some TLC. I took a hitting lesson with a nice pro Chip who hit with me ( I was 7 week post knee surgery) so we rallied cooperatively, and hit some volleys. Nice guy gave me plenty of time, and was gracious with his time afterwards to talk some tennis. Pro shop poorly stocked.
Outstanding tennis instruction. After an hour lesson with Brendan, my daughter’s serves when from 5 mph to 50 mph (only slight hyperbole)
Top rate instruction with Adri and her staff including Chris and Scott. Beautiful well maintained courts and the city of Naples is a plus. Can’t go wrong with PBI
I had a fantastic time a Grande Beach. The staff, particularly the tennis pros were fantastic and made the whole 2 weeks really enjoyable. Their enthusiasm is unmatched and I feel like I really learnt so many things to add to my game. I would definitely go back in a heart beat.
