Set amid the horse farms, citrus groves, and multi-million-dollar houses in the hills 24 miles north of San Diego, Rancho Valencia hugs the eucalyptus-capped slope of a secluded valley not far from Rancho Santa Fe. The access road loops around the 18 courts—built in three clusters connected by walkways—before ending in front of a Spanish Colonial-style clubhouse inspired by old Rancho Santa Fe estates.
For a tiny resort it has remarkable breadth of dimensions, not only the tennis but a spacious outdoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi, a 10,000-square-foot spa, a croquet court, and putting green. The nearest golf course is immediately adjacent, though guests have privileges at half a dozen in the area. And all of the rooms are just short walk from the resort’s award-winning restaurant.
Tennis Staff: As evident from the large number of courts relative to rooms, Rancho Valencia has had a deep devotion to tennis ever since it opened. Head tennis pro Eduardo Sanchez has roots at Rancho Valencia dating back to 1989 when he helped launch the John Gardiner Tennis Camps here. The Gardiner method underpins his teaching—he learned it from Grand Slam singles and doubles champion Ken Rosewall, who was then the tennis director—but he wins over the resort guests with his passion for the game and diligent pursuit of client-focused service. “I just love what I do,” he says of his devotion to teaching. “I have always just wanted this place to succeed.” A boutique resort with no golf course and a large tennis complex is an anomaly—a “white elephant,” Sanchez calls it. “It’s surprising we’re still here,” he notes, alluding to resorts whose tennis courts fell victim to condominium development. “We’re lucky to have private owners [the Jacobs family of Qualcomm] who take price in what we do.”
Taking care of guest’s needs extends to finding games. “[The entire teaching staff] is responsible for game matching and we have three ladies who play leagues and know the local players,” he told me. “We don’t just set up games with players of the same level [using the UTR system]; we try to match chemistry as well, even if that means recruiting players from other clubs.”
Tennis Programs: It’s emblematic of the resort’s service focus that the daily clinic goes beyond the usual hour of drills. It covers all aspects of the game and expands or contracts based on the number of players: 90 minutes for one-on-one, expanding to 150 minutes if at least two are signed up and maxing out a four players. Either way, the session includes a juice break and pro/student match play. There are family options as well and a weekend men’s drop-in doubles. SES Tennis Center Fundraising Pro-Am. Every fall, Sanchez stages a pro-am as a fundraiser for the SES Tennis Center in Tecate, Mexico, a public facility he founded in memory of his late son, Sean Eduardo Sanchez. As many as two dozen pros take part, pairing with amateurs for an afternoon of tennis followed by a barbecue. For more information, visit SES Tennis Center Fundraising Pro-Am.
Court Complex: There are 16 hard courts (none with lights) and two new red-clay courts, a rarity in South California that has proved so popular that they’ve thinking of putting in two more. And what had previously been a tennis court has been converted into four pickleball courts. The courts have been arranged in three clusters variously called Palm, Citrus, and Sycamore for the trees planted around them. Court time is free.
Off Court
Children's programs: Although you may not at first expect Rancho Valencia to lure families, it does accommodate guests with kids by offering summer and holiday tennis camps for juniors. During the summer months, the Junior Ranchers Kids Camp, which provides organized swimming, crafts, sports and more, is also available to guests. In addition, there is a junior tennis academy for those ages 7 to 20 that although established for the children of members also welcomes the children of guests.
Dining: The Pony Room, which spills out on the adjoining terrace, stands out both for its locally sourced “Coastal Ranch” cuisine and its views of the valley. An inviting bar within specializes in craft cocktails and tequila. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all available here.
Spa & Fitness Center: At 10,000 square feet, the Spa at Rancho Valencia is very large relative to the number of rooms. Decor runs to hand-crafted European tiles and Italian fountains, while the treatments focus on using such local ingredients as avocado, grape seed, and natural healing agents from the ocean. The treatment rooms open onto private outdoor gardens. A saline pool is part of the complex, as is a yoga studio seasonally open to a reflecting pool with an island platform at its center. The fitness center has moved here as well, offering such wellness workouts as yoga, Pilates (private Reformer Sessions and group mat classes), spinning, TRX, and a suite of Cardio machines each with personal televisions. Remarkably all of these classes—some 75 in all—are free to registered guests.
Golf. Although it lacks a golf course of its own, the resort has playing privileges at several nearby courses, free loaner clubs, and the option of a golf package, which can include nearby Torrey Pines Golf Course, home of the 2008 U.S. Open.
Outdoor heated lap pool with adjacent Jacuzzi, complimentary mountain bikes, maps of walking/jogging trails in nearby hills.
Accommodations
Short of booking a luxury condominium at some of the better tennis resorts, nothing comes close to the elegance, comfort, or spaciousness of Rancho Valencia’s accommodations. Lodging at the resort consists of 49 lavish suites and a 3-suite Hacienda. The basic suites—if “basic” is the right word for these lavish spaces—have three floor plans. The smaller Del Mar suites are technically junior suites since there is no wall separating the bedroom from the living area. However, at 850 square feet, these suites hardly deserve the diminutive “junior.” The 1,200-square-foot Rancho Santa Fe suites, by contrast, do have a completely separate bedroom and more space than most one-bedroom condos. The newest Grove Suites are, like Del Mar, technically junior suites, but provide a very ample 1,000 square feet of living space. All three types have a sitting room with a fireplace, a private patio with views of the surrounding hills, and a mammoth tiled bath with separate soaking tub and steam shower.
All of these suites have been spread through some 20 casitas perched in a garden of flowers and trees on a grassy knoll above the clubhouse, except the newest Grove Suites, which cling together along the rim of a ravine overlooking an olive grove. Personally, I have never found anything to criticize about any of these accommodations so I was stunned when in 2012 the resort closed to conduct a gut renovation. How, I wondered, could they possibly improve on what they had? Now that I’ve stayed there, I can only say that these great suites have been made even better. The wood floors that replaced the terracotta tile are much more elegant, the bathrooms have been greatly enhanced with Spanish tile, Toto automatic toilets, and Bang & Olufsen stereos. No detail went unnoticed, from the 600-thread-count sheets to the remarkably soft robes and towels. The well-chosen furnishings and artwork have a one-of-a-kind feel. There is, of course, a full home entertainment center with a large flatscreen TVs (supplemented by two smaller ones in the bedroom and bath). The mini fridge comes stalked with unexpected—and complimentary—snacks and non-alcoholic beverages, and the coffee maker is by Illy and comes with a selection of pods. Scattered throughout are plants, fresh flowers and beeswax candles. As in the past, fresh-squeezed orange juice and a newspaper are delivered just outside the front door each morning. There is room service, of course, and so when you add that outdoor terrace—many with private Jacuzzis—it’s no wonder that guests have been known to seldom leave their room.
Getting there
Seasons: Year-round; The climate here, 7 miles from the ocean, borders on ideal. Average high temperatures in January hover in the mid 60s and even in August it is possible to sleep comfortably without having to turn on the air conditioning, especially since the rooms have ceiling fans.
Travel Instructions: The resort is 24 miles from San Diego International Airport (SAN).
This is my happy place. I love absolutely everything about Rancho Valencia. The accommodations are unsurpassed — and we’ve stayed at some pretty incredible places around the world. While it’s a pricy place and not somewhere we can ‘pop into’ on a whim, it’s worth the price tag and the effort to get there. We’ve been twice and it was just as wonderful the second time as it was the first. We played two days. Once with Edurado, who is a legend, and once with Todd, who is just the most incredible guy you’ll ever meet. Both provided a great lesson for four of us of varying levels. I absolutely cannot wait to get back and highly recommend Rancho Valencia as a bucket list destination. Do it!!!!

This resort is gorgeous, private and the rooms are loaded with details of luxury. We especially enjoyed the comfy bed, patio privacy with private hot tub, and luxury bathroom. The spa was very charming with healthy perks, but the couples massages were a bit pricey. As a tennis professional who has worked at two top rated tennis resorts on Longboat Key, Florida, I was very impressed with our tennis experience and enjoyed our private clinics with Edwardo and Todd. Todd’s lesson after us was running late and he offered additional time and “played in” our clinic with the ladies three against two which made it more competitive for the the guys. The resort has a mix of soft and hard courts. So if you prefer soft you should request them in advance. We came with another couple who had been there previously to celebrate my birthday. In addition, on Sunday 9/19 we happened to meet Garbine Muguruza before her practice session, and she graciously took a photo with us. Lastly, we drove a complimentary Bentley to dinner on two nights of our stay. What a great birthday at a great resort!

Rancho Valencia is simply just perfect.

Phenomenal amenities. Multiple plexipave hard courts and European red clay courts, all in impeccable condition and surrounded by beautiful scenery drenched in constant sunshine. Only thing better than the resort facilities is the amazing coaches. Coaches are all former D1 or ATP/WTA players that have a wealth of experience coaching collegiate and highly ranked professional players some of whom still play on tour. These coaches also work with top level juniors in southern California. They are masters at improving stroke mechanics, technique, tactics for all levels of players from aspiring juniors to recreational 4.0/4.5 USTA players and beyond.

Quite simply stated, this resort is a special place. It offers a combination of recreational excellence and luxurious accommodations that I have not experienced previously. I would recommended it highly.

Rancho Valencia is an idyllic setting and the pros will work you as hard as you’re willing to work. The level of instruction is superb, as are the amenities!

The tennis experience was superb – exactly what I was looking for. I booked in advance with no problem: clinics, private lessons and some match-ups for games. I worked with different coaches, and all were excellent at customizing the clinic or lesson to the participants. In addition to great quality professional coaches, there are other added bonuses: an incomparably beautiful setting in a mature citrus orchard and a sycamore forest, many courts including hard and clay, smoothies delivered in the middle of the clinics and the excellent spa on the same property. Coming to this tennis resort has been on my bucket list for years. Now I’m hoping this was the first time of many. (FYI: I am a high 3.5/low 4.0 player, both singles and doubles. My opinion is that my comments would also apply to lower and higher levels.) The spa at Rancho Valencia is second to none (and I’m very picky about my massages! Particularly the ability to do deep tissue and sports massages. Every practitioner was outstanding.)

We go to Rancho Valencia every year to play tennis. It’s just a super facility with wonderful, friendly, great tennis pros. You couldn’t find a better place to play tennis and enjoy good food and the wonderful people who work there. It’s just a delight. Every year we return for more tennis and fun and every year we’re very happy we did.

Love the ambiance of this Resort! Peaceful, understated luxury, gracious staff, great layout of Casitas, clean rooms. Only negative was the hard mattress.

Amazingly private and serene environment. Beautiful grounds and room amenities cannot be beat. Wonderful service at every turn. Spectacular restaurants.

The pro Doug Faila, was terrific! I really enjoyed hitting with him. In fact, he was the best pro I’ve ever hit with. The sunken court was wonderful, which I specifically requested. The only comment I would make is that the director of tennis, Robin White, was not as accommodating and friendly when I specifically requested the sunken court which I had reserved. Can’t wait to go back and play!

Well organized Great courts Very pleasant

This is an absolute amazing hidden getaway. It comes with amazing wonderful pros a beautiful boutique hotel and a unparalleled spa. There is fresh squeezed orange juice at your door in the morning, the mini fridge is stocked and free of charge and there are sports cars available to drive without charge. It is the true peaceful getaway at the highest level of service. All that said, the best part is the tennis tailored to your needs and level. Since we have found this gem, we go every year.

Absolutely outstanding tennis resort! I’ve been all over the US and this one is top notch in every regard – setting, staff, pros, facilities, court surfaces, etc. Highly recommend it!

The most peaceful and most beautiful resort I have ever been to!

I have traveled to Rancho Valencia four times in the past six years. I travel with my husband and children (ages 10-15). What I love about the tennis at Rancho Valencia is that the programming works for everyone in my family. It is great for my two daughters who are competitive junior usta players. It is perfect for my 10 year old who is moving from green dot balls to real balls. It works for my husband who doesn’t play that often and it is amazing for me, a 4.5 league player. The tennis pros are all wonderful and they work with you to arrange a great tennis schedule. The courts are fantastic and the setting could not be more beautiful. When I enter the property, I feel transformed. You can’t help but relax when you are there. The accommodations are also five star.

Gorgeous setting just north of San Diego. You stay at a luxury resort that has, in its compound, a first rate tennis center with 18 tennis courts that are just minutes from your villa.

For the past five years my tennis partner and I have been leading a group of twelve ladies on a tennis trip to the beautiful Rancho Valencia. From the moment we arrive to the moment we leave, the service and amenities are top-notch. We play tennis approximately four hours per day over a long weekend. Our tennis program is coordinated through the fabulous Robin White, Director of Tennis. She tailors our program based upon our input which we love. Her staff of pros are always spot-on and take the time to listen to our feedback to customize their instruction; and they are all really fun! Off the court, we thoroughly enjoy the two restaurants on property (the food is amazing!) as well as the workout center and spa. The rooms are beautifully appointed with luxurious linens, fabulous bath products and a cozy fireplace. Each room has a spacious private patio to relax in the warm San Diego sun. Every morning we are delighted by the delivery of freshly squeezed orange juice to our rooms. In the evenings after dinner we enjoy relaxing around the fire pits with a few cocktails and recapping our day. The laughs are abundant! Our group is so happy with our experience at Rancho Valencia we don’t ever want to take this tennis trip anywhere else, even considering the travel time from the East coast. This resort is really special. The beautiful location coupled with the impeccable service, top notch tennis program, fantastic food and amazing room amenities have us coming back year after year.

Strengths – Quaint, beautiful, luxurious, fabulous instruction, well-maintained courts, friendly staff, wonderful spa, charming rooms! Weaknesses – None!!!! Favorite tennis resort I have even been to!

Rancho Valencia is tennis and vacation paradise. The tennis facilities are impeccable (particularly with the addition of two red clay courts), and the professional staff friendly and are the best technically I have found anywhere. The resort itself is simply our favorite place to spend a few days. Rooms, food, staff, environment, weather, spa, yoga, gym, spinning, etc. etc. – it’s just the best.

Most magnificent resort! Relaxing yet plenty of activities. Tennis facility is beautiful!

Our stay at Rancho Valencia Resort was a dream come true. I got restored in just three days of yoga playing tennis and enjoying the whole experiennce. Outstanding service! The tennis lessons were amazing. I had a lesson with Eduardo Sanchez and one with Robin White. The lessons are worth every penny! It is impressive to see how experienced they are to pick on what you need to work on to move to the next level and the tools they use to make a very quick transformation!

Rancho Valencia is a magnificent resort. Our casita was beautifully appointed. It was spacious and well appointed. Service throughout the resort was great. The staff seemed truly happy. Food was delicious. Tennis facility is first class. We took a 2 1/2 hour clinic one morning with Steve. He was great. We got a lot out of it. Marie set us up for mixed doubles play with club members the next two mornings. She was very accommodating. We had a great time and rank Rancho Valencia Tennis as best we have ever experienced.
DS
The most fantastic place. Tennis coaching is the best in the world, as are the facilities. More importantly though, all the people are so nice, fun, kind and helpful. On top of this, you have the resort itself, which is one of the best in the world.
MA
Incredible facility and fantastic pros. I’m an active 4.5 and played with several of the pros. Would recommend Doug and Arturo in particular. Arturo even brought out his son as a hitting partner while standing next to me at the baseline adjusting my strokes and providing tactical inputs and critiques. I will return here several times per year going forward!
