More than 30 people were already on the teaching courts when I joined one of the morning drop-in clinics Sea Colony runs on weekdays. It was approaching July, when every one of some 2,200 condominiums and homes fill up with summer guests and homeowners. While the beach is unquestionably the biggest draw, tennis with 34 hard and clay courts, 6 of them indoors, could easily lay claim to being the No. 2 reason people opt to vacation at Sea Colony.
Many owners told me that the deciding factor in their purchase of a home At Sea Colony was the quality of the tennis, both for them and their kids. Apart from those midweek clinics, Sea Colony’s summer roster lures players to the courts with Live Ball and Cardio sessions, doubles clinics, Nike Adult Camps, Sea Colony’s own tennis camps, custom-designed tennis getaways with optional mental-toughness component, social pro-run round robins, and a mix of junior programs running the gamut from drills and games for 4- to 7-year-olds to Nike tennis camps and tournament tough training. And the year is otherwise peppered with exhibitions, junior tournaments, demo days, and more. At any season the staff is there to help set up games, aided now by the ability of guests and members to sign up online. All of this is designed to keep tennis in the forefront of people’s consciousness.
Sea Colony dates to the early 1970s and has something of a split personality. Route 1 divides two completely different neighborhoods. On one side is the beach—a broad boulevard of soft sand bordered by dunes over which looms a phalanx of frankly rather stark 10-to-14-story towers, their harshness somewhat relieved by long dune-fronting boardwalks, broad patios, and the occasional swimming pool, one of them indoors. On the opposite side of the highway, a tiny marketplace of shops and restaurants marks the entrance to a leafy and altogether tranquil community of residential streets with low-rise condominiums and homes, lakes, ponds, swimming pools, and a $7.5 million fitness and aquatics center, linked to one another and the beach by trams and dedicated bike paths.
Sea Colony boasts a top-tier tennis and pickleball facility—a three-time winner of the USTA Outstanding Facility of the Year award, most recently in 2022—and a wide range of programs that serve as a tremendous asset. This excellence is further enhanced by the friendly and always-helpful staff. With a talented team of professionals, including college and former college players, Sea Colony continues to deliver exceptional racquet sports experiences for players of all levels.
Tennis Programs: During the busy summer season, there are daily adult clinics, daily Cardio sessions, and a variety of junior clinics for various ages from Monday through Friday. There are as many as five round robins weekly during the busy summer. At any season the staff is there to help set up games, aided now by the ability of guests and members to sign up online (see Sea Colony Tennis for a detailed overview of all things tennis). And roughly once a month from April to October, some sort of special event—a professional, sanctioned, or social tournament, a visiting pro, or an exhibition—rounds out the program. And during the summer months of June to August there are two or three NIKE adult tennis camps each month (ALERT: these tend to sell out early). Beyond that, Sea Colony offers tailor-made weekend camps for small groups.
On paper, this all appears to be rock-solid choice of tennis options, but what sets them apart is the number of participants. On a day in August when temperatures had soared above 95 degrees, more than 30 adults and juniors turned out for the 10 a.m. intermediate clinic and another 30-plus attended the advanced clinic. I also counted 20 beginners in afternoon junior clinic, which had astutely been scheduled for the indoor courts.
Tennis aside, Sea Colony has also made the move into pickleball with four permanent courts and blended lines on 14 of the tennis courts and an additional 4 permanent courts, a total of 8 with lights. Certified pickleball instructors are available for clinics and private lessons, supplemented by pickleball and hybrid tennis and pickleball camps for adults (including some for advanced pickleball), and NIKE camps for juniors. Instruction aside, Sea Colony stages pickleball clinics, social round robins, and a variety of morning and evening Open Plays sessions for all levels. Court Complex. Although there are four lighted hard courts at the beach, the real tennis action takes place at the main tennis center. It comprises six indoor hard courts with sandwiched between another six outdoor courts and 14 Har-Tru courts. There are and additional four hard courts in the trees across the road, two of those now sporting blended lines to accommodate pickleball. Grand Central Station for tennis is the pro shop on the ground floor of the indoor building. Above it, a long viewing area overlooks the indoor courts and has a bar for use in special events. It opens in back onto a broad deck with a panoramic perspective on the Har-Tru courts, where The Vacasa Pro Women’s Open, a $25K Pro Circuit event, takes place in May. Although the pro shop closes at 7 p.m., those well-lighted indoor courts remain open on a first-come, first-served basis until 10 p.m.
Court fees: None, not even for the indoor courts.
Off Court
Beach: Sea Colony fronts ½ mile of Bethany Beach, a broad boulevard of soft sand washed by the Atlantic Ocean. A free shuttle takes guests from Sea Colony West (where the tennis center is) across Route 1 to the beach.
Fitness Center: A short walk from the tennis center is $7.5 million multi-use fitness and aquatic center with indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a snack bar, gymnasium, and a well-equipped workout room. Personal trainers are available as are a variety of classes, including spinning, Zumba (both aquatic and dry land), yoga, Barre toning, and water aerobics.
Bike paths lace Sea Colony West making it easy for kids to get from houses and townhomes there to the tennis courts, fitness center, or marketplace (though to reach the beach they have to cross busy Route 1).
Children's programs: Colony Kids and Club Sea Colony take kids for 2 and 4 hours respectively for a mix of swimming, games, crafts, and other diversions.
Dining: The Marketplace at the entrance to Sea Colony has two restaurants: several restaurants, Fin’s Ale House and Armand’s Pizza among them, but there are numerous other choices within easy driving distance in Bethany and Fenwick Beaches.
Accommodations
Lodging consists of 1-to-5 bedroom condos and houses, some oceanfront, others near the tennis complex. During the summer, one-week bookings are required.
Getting there
Seasons: Year-round thanks to its indoor courts.
Travel Instructions: The nearest major airports are Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI) and Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), each roughly a 2½-hour drive from Bethany Beach. The alternative is to fly into Salisbury Regional Airport (SBY) in Salisbury, MD, which is approximately 45 minutes’ drive south of Bethany Beach.
Sea Colony Tennis has become like a second family to me and my family. My son, almost 6, has been taking tennis lessons with Coach Alex for 1.5 years and Alex is phenomenal. He cares about my son, he’s patient, and takes the time to teach my son the game of tennis. He keeps it fun but also pushes my son to learn and be better. Coach Ethan and Coach Chris, thank you for playing with my son as well, for truly keeping it fun and helping him want to come back for more! The staff at Sea Colony are so welcoming. Krista always welcomes us with a smile and runs the pro shop very well. Shout out to Insu and the custodial staff who keep Sea Colony spotless and beautiful! Excited to see what the future holds for our family journey at Sea Colony tennis!

The staff and programs is remains a great as ever. In all the years I have never gad a bad thing to say.

Sea Colony is the best! Great atmosphere, settings, staff. Overall the best ever in the Delmarva area.
SO
I’ve had the pleasure of taking part of several clinics and found them fun, well structured and a great workout. The staff is friendly and provide great information and instruction. I recommend to anyone that’s looking to play tennis in Bethany.
JK
Best overall beach/pickleball/tennis resort in the East! Especially if you are a multisport athlete. So many pools, the beach, tennis, pickleball, great gyms (2!), and close to tons of great restaurants! Wonderful family resort! GREAT staff!
IM
Great tennis! Love the clinics and staff and instructors always give 100%.
RK
With a perfect setting on the southern Delaware coastline the facility is simply amazing. Beautiful landscaping abound and both a vibrant tennis and Pickleball program this is the perfect destination for couples, or families
DW
Sea Colony is the best racket-sport facility on the Eastern Shore. The welcoming environment, knowledgeable and extremely personable staff and opportunities are above the rest. This year they had Lindsey and Riley Newman (professional pickleball players) come to the facility to host clinics, and it was the experience of a lifetime. Whether I am playing in open play or preparing for tournaments, every time I step on to the court it’s a vacation in itself. Alejandro Justiniani and staff go above and beyond to make all feel welcomed and provide an excellent experience.
MS
The tennis and pickleball staff at Sea Colony is outstanding. Beautiful resort, gorgeous beach, and so many things to do in lovely Bethany Beach.
MC
I participate in weekend tennis camps 1-2x a year plus the tournaments. I also love the tennis clinics and cardio. The pros are amazing and everything is well run!! Im only disappointed when it’s over.
DT
Outstanding tennis resort with excellent pro staff, a pristine private beach and 12 heated pools, located a short drive from many NE metropolitan areas. Sea Colony Tennis is a true gem. The tennis center is high-energy, with more than 80+ clinics each weeks, for both tennis and pickleball. Our whole family plays tennis and we’ve done the adult camps as well as the children camps and besides improving a great degree, we also loved it. It offers socials, tournaments and clinics year-round, and well-priced private lessons with full-time pros who pay attention to your whole game and genuinenely take pride in their craft, helping you improve your game. Sea Colony is the best kept secret on the East Coast, being a real resort with a pristine private beach, state of art Fitness Center and incredibly well maintained heated pools. There are several young couples with children moving in the area, with the main draw being the SC tennis programs and SC swim team. Most of the pros have been here for many years and are incredibly talented and invested. A special shutout to Alex and Ethan for creating new childrens’ programs to cater to developing Advanced Intermediate Middle schoolers in a well-curated group. I shouldn’t really review SC Tennis because I’d love to keep it a secret and to ourselves (shhh), but all of these guys’ hard work should be rewarded! We’ve done camps and clinics at several resorts and USTA campuses and SC is still our favorite. Truly outstanding tennis resort.
HG
Sea Colony is a tennis-lovers destination. We rent a condo in the resort every spring and fall to participate in tennis programs.
DD
We’ve been a part of tennis communities in MA & FL – Sea Colony is clearly an outstanding resort for both tennis AND pickle ball. Instructors are top notch/on par with any of the best instructors we’ve ever met and always friendly/encouraging!
KO
Sea Colony is an outstanding tennis resort with indoor and outdoor courts. The resort has an exceptional staff who prove outstanding lessons. I have taken lessons from Alex, Chris and Thomas. Currently I am taking weekly lessons from Chris and my game has improved immensely. I also play in Alex’s clinics which are challenging and fun. Krista, who runs the pro shop is very helpful, friendly and accessible. She is fantastic. Sea Colony is an asset to Delaware and the Eastern Shore.
RW
The program at Sea Colony is amazing, Tennis and Pickleball are flourishing with high-energy programs and staff.

The tennis Program under Alex Justiniani is the best .
JK
This is our third time and we’re already planning our 4th. We usually come with one other couple and have 1 instructor dedicated to us. We’re thinking of increasing to 4 total couples where we’d have 2 instructors for the 8 of us. Instruction has always been great and everyone is super friendly. We’d highly recommend it to everyone of all levels. We’re 3.5-4.0 players and it’s perfect.
EW
sea colony is exceptional. Alex and team are awesome. I will defin be going back. Dont miss out on this tennis camp you will love it
LO
The Sea Colony tennis weekend camp was fantastic. This is my second year and it was just as great as last year.
ER
Attended the Nike Tennis Camp for a weekend in August. The staff and facility are the highlights, but all aspects fo the camp were fantastic. They created a very welcoming atmosphere for all levels. Our group of 12 ranged from 2.5s to 4.5s and the atmosphere allowed for seamless play and fun. Highly recommend.
BF
I took tennis lessons in the month of June with Alex. He is an amazing instructor. He raised my technical and mental skills significantly.
EM
It’s not just the Tennis Facilities but an overall great family vacation experience that everyone should try. If you’re an empty nester consider traveling to Sea Colony in the fall (Sept-Oct) when rental rates are reduced, ocean water is wonderful and all ammenities are operating. Tennis Staff: Alex, Thomas, Krista and Ethan are oustanding. Excellent instruction and the tennis pro shop provides all equipent, clothing and equipment maintenance.
RC
Came for the tennis but was encouraged to try pickleball. Had fun. Nice group of players.

Great tennis facilities and instruction, very well run

Thomas is a brilliant tennis professional and a joyful presence.

Alex and his staff were amazing catering to our entire team needs. Not only did they touch on everything we asked for, they went above and beyond their duties and made sure we all had a great time. I would recommend Sea Colony Tennis to anyone!

I introduced the sport of tennis to my son when he was 4 years old. We reside in southern Delaware and have visited other nearby tennis facilities. Nothing comes close to Sea Colony Tennis. My son is now 5 and we are so blessed to call Sea Colony our tennis home. The staff is so friendly and the facilities are amazing. Alex Justiniani is the real deal. He has helped my son take it to the next level in less than a year. Alex has a passionate heart for the sport and more importantly, for the player’s successes on and off the court. He is the USTA teaching professional of the year for a reason. My family is beyond blessed to be on this journey with Alex and Sea Colony. Vamos!
DC
The instructors were top notch. Our group of 12 ranged in skill level from 2.5 to 4.0 and the drills we did benefited us all. Fun atmosphere to learn and play.

We came for a group tennis camp with our tennis friends. We were 6 couples and stayed in 2 condos on site. We had a fantastic time. Check-in/ check-out were smooth. The condos were very well maintained with plenty of linens and kitchen equipment. The tennis camp was fantastic with very engaged pros. All of us had a wonderful time. I would highly recommend it.
EK
Alex, Thomas and Josh were amazing. I am an absolute beginner, attending camp with couples of varying experience. I never felt like I was dragging the program down, and everyone helped me learn at my level. I highly recommend Sea Colony to everyone and not to be worried if you are a beginner!
DM
We participated in a large group (12) attending the Tennis Camp. The activities and lessons were outstanding. I would highly recommend and we will return. Thank You!
JL
Great group camp! The instructors, Thomas, Alex and Joshua were very accessible and the drills were fun and informative. We also did a private lesson which was great.
KC
Days 1 and 2 of the Nike camp were amazing, but day 3 was a waste of my time. The instructor on day 3 did not build on what was taught on the first two days. In addition, I spent all of day 3 listening to what should not be done versus what should be done. Day 3 needs restructuring and all the assistants should be on the same page. Also, try to include all players in the matches.
BG
Great coach to student ratio. Thomas was very helpful, working with all of our different skill levels.
MJ
In Southern Delaware, we are fortunate to have excellent tennis programs and facilities at Sea Colony. Built during the nationwide “tennis craze” of the late 1960’s, early 1970’s (may we fondly remember those days), Sea Colony has endured by offering excellent outstanding outdoor and indoor playing conditions and excellent instruction. Every time I have taken a clinic or a drill at Sea Colony, I’ve learned something new that has improved my game. Only three minor weaknesses: first, for nonmembers of the facility and nonresidents of the Sea Colony complex, I’ve never perceived much interest in the facility’s arranging matches. Second, limited number of indoor courts (handy in inclement weather) although in recent years the number of indoor courts has increased. Third, some of the outdoor hard courts have been striped to accommodate playing pickleball, potentially distracting competitive tennis players trying to play tennis on those courts. If the pickleball fad does not fizzle (compare hula hoops, racquetball, etc.), then I’d prefer that Sea Colony build a few regulation pickleball courts (without, of course, displacing any tennis courts). Let tennis courts be tennis courts, and give the pickleballers their own courts. Sea Colony always should prioritize tennis over pickleball.
MW
Prepare to work hard by participating in creative drills to hone your game skills. Learn strategy and reinforce mental aspect of game. Sea Colony tennis camp never disappoints. For me it’s an annual adventure with friends who want to up their game.

My 4.0 USTA tennis team visits Sea Colony for a weekend of tennis annually before the start of the season. The staff is excellent, providing quality instruction along with humor and personality. They are open to our questions and do their best to provide the perfect balance between improving our game, while being realistic about our potential. We consistently have a wonderful time and would highly recommend a visit.
