More than 30 people were already on the teaching courts when I joined one of the morning drop-in clinics Sea Colony runs on weekdays. It was approaching July, when every one of some 2,200 condominiums and homes fill up with summer guests and homeowners. While the beach is unquestionably the biggest draw, tennis with 34 hard and clay courts, 6 of them indoors, could easily lay claim to being the No. 2 reason people opt to vacation at Sea Colony.
Many owners told me that the deciding factor in their purchase of a home At Sea Colony was the quality of the tennis, both for them and their kids. Apart from those midweek clinics, Sea Colony’s summer roster lures players to the courts with Live Ball and Cardio sessions, doubles clinics, Nike Adult Camps, Sea Colony’s own tennis camps, custom-designed tennis getaways with optional mental-toughness component, social pro-run round robins, and a mix of junior programs running the gamut from drills and games for 4- to 7-year-olds to Nike tennis camps and tournament tough training. And the year is otherwise peppered with exhibitions, junior tournaments, demo days, and more. At any season the staff is there to help set up games, aided now by the ability of guests and members to sign up online. All of this is designed to keep tennis in the forefront of people’s consciousness.
Sea Colony dates to the early 1970s and has something of a split personality. Route 1 divides two completely different neighborhoods. On one side is the beach—a broad boulevard of soft sand bordered by dunes over which looms a phalanx of frankly rather stark 10-to-14-story towers, their harshness somewhat relieved by long dune-fronting boardwalks, broad patios, and the occasional swimming pool, one of them indoors. On the opposite side of the highway, a tiny marketplace of shops and restaurants marks the entrance to a leafy and altogether tranquil community of residential streets with low-rise condominiums and homes, lakes, ponds, swimming pools, and a $7.5 million fitness and aquatics center, linked to one another and the beach by trams and dedicated bike paths.
Sea Colony boasts a top-tier tennis and pickleball facility—a three-time winner of the USTA Outstanding Facility of the Year award, most recently in 2022—and a wide range of programs that serve as a tremendous asset. This excellence is further enhanced by the friendly and always-helpful staff. With a talented team of professionals, including college and former college players, Sea Colony continues to deliver exceptional racquet sports experiences for players of all levels.
Tennis Programs: During the busy summer season, there are daily adult clinics, daily Cardio sessions, and a variety of junior clinics for various ages from Monday through Friday. There are as many as five round robins weekly during the busy summer. At any season the staff is there to help set up games, aided now by the ability of guests and members to sign up online (see Sea Colony Tennis for a detailed overview of all things tennis). And roughly once a month from April to October, some sort of special event—a professional, sanctioned, or social tournament, a visiting pro, or an exhibition—rounds out the program. And during the summer months of June to August there are two or three NIKE adult tennis camps each month (ALERT: these tend to sell out early). Beyond that, Sea Colony offers tailor-made weekend camps for small groups.
On paper, this all appears to be rock-solid choice of tennis options, but what sets them apart is the number of participants. On a day in August when temperatures had soared above 95 degrees, more than 30 adults and juniors turned out for the 10 a.m. intermediate clinic and another 30-plus attended the advanced clinic. I also counted 20 beginners in afternoon junior clinic, which had astutely been scheduled for the indoor courts.
Tennis aside, Sea Colony has also made the move into pickleball with four permanent courts and blended lines on 14 of the tennis courts and an additional 4 permanent courts, a total of 8 with lights. Certified pickleball instructors are available for clinics and private lessons, supplemented by pickleball and hybrid tennis and pickleball camps for adults (including some for advanced pickleball), and NIKE camps for juniors. Instruction aside, Sea Colony stages pickleball clinics, social round robins, and a variety of morning and evening Open Plays sessions for all levels. Court Complex. Although there are four lighted hard courts at the beach, the real tennis action takes place at the main tennis center. It comprises six indoor hard courts with sandwiched between another six outdoor courts and 14 Har-Tru courts. There are and additional four hard courts in the trees across the road, two of those now sporting blended lines to accommodate pickleball. Grand Central Station for tennis is the pro shop on the ground floor of the indoor building. Above it, a long viewing area overlooks the indoor courts and has a bar for use in special events. It opens in back onto a broad deck with a panoramic perspective on the Har-Tru courts, where The Vacasa Pro Women’s Open, a $25K Pro Circuit event, takes place in May. Although the pro shop closes at 7 p.m., those well-lighted indoor courts remain open on a first-come, first-served basis until 10 p.m.
Court fees: None, not even for the indoor courts.
Off Court
Beach: Sea Colony fronts ½ mile of Bethany Beach, a broad boulevard of soft sand washed by the Atlantic Ocean. A free shuttle takes guests from Sea Colony West (where the tennis center is) across Route 1 to the beach.
Fitness Center:Â A short walk from the tennis center is $7.5 million multi-use fitness and aquatic center with indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a snack bar, gymnasium, and a well-equipped workout room. Personal trainers are available as are a variety of classes, including spinning, Zumba (both aquatic and dry land), yoga, Barre toning, and water aerobics.
Bike paths lace Sea Colony West making it easy for kids to get from houses and townhomes there to the tennis courts, fitness center, or marketplace (though to reach the beach they have to cross busy Route 1).
Children's programs: Colony Kids and Club Sea Colony take kids for 2 and 4 hours respectively for a mix of swimming, games, crafts, and other diversions.
Dining: The Marketplace at the entrance to Sea Colony has two restaurants: several restaurants, Fin’s Ale House and Armand’s Pizza among them, but there are numerous other choices within easy driving distance in Bethany and Fenwick Beaches.
Accommodations
Lodging consists of 1-to-5 bedroom condos and houses, some oceanfront, others near the tennis complex. During the summer, one-week bookings are required.
Getting there
Seasons: Year-round thanks to its indoor courts.
Travel Instructions: The nearest major airports are Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI) and Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), each roughly a 2½-hour drive from Bethany Beach. The alternative is to fly into Salisbury Regional Airport (SBY) in Salisbury, MD, which is approximately 45 minutes’ drive south of Bethany Beach.
Great head coach Thomas. Good drills and excellent courts.

Loved this camp. Learned a lot and had so much fun doing it. The pros were insightful and great to work with. I would definitely do this again!
TR
Teaching staff was wonderful. We received wonderful iinstruction and reminders how it should be done. I had a really nice time.
DF
Excellent weekend doubles getaway. Thomas is a skilled director as well as a personable pro. Alex brings quality instruction to your level.
JA
Awesome tennis facility and camp. It was well organized and the staff was not only energetic but creative with teaching methods. I would definitely go back and recommend it highly to others.
JM
The teaching staff provide an overall enjoyable experience. They combine tennis expertise with the ability to quickly assess a student’s abilities. With younger individuals (8 and under), they insure a balance of instruction and fun is maintained. This connection with students and players keep us returning week after week!
SP
The tennis staff and facilities are great!

The Sea Colony youth clinics run Monday thru Thursdays from 5pm to 7pm is one of the best run ‘sports’ clinics my kids have ever been a part of and they have played everything from Gymnastics, Swimming, Softball, Basketball, Lacrosse, Golf & Field Hockey. For 2 hours the kids are active and learning PLUS having fun!
JO
My son has been attending The Sea Colony Junior Tennis Program for the last 2 years, and his overall tennis skills have improved dramatically. Also, the kids and coaches set a nice enviroment that lets the kids have a sense of belonging. My son, especially likes the fitness activites they do on a daily basis.
RZ
The camp staff was simply top notch and we learned alot, got reinforcement and tips in other areas, and had a great deal of fun doing so. Thomas, Alex, and Keith were terrific. We will certainly do this again and again.
SI
I was visiting from New England. The staff was excellent and matched me up with some great partners.
I just returned from a weekend camp at Sea Colony and the very next day I won a match that had intimidated me. Thomas and the pros under his leadership are so knowledgeable, engaging, and fun! I loved getting individualized advice, a variety of drills, and on-court coaching during games. If you are looking for a great tennis weekend in the mid-Atlantic states, don’t miss Sea Colony.
KW
I had the best workout summer ever. Cardio tennis program is the best I have ever taken. Amazing cardio workout. The staff could not be friendlier and the tennis pros were the best. I can not wait to get back next summer. I brought all my friends who came to visit us to Cardio and everyone loved it-even my husband who is hard to please! My one friend, who is a triathlete, even said it was an exceptional workout and wished she could find a cardio tennis program at home that matched the one at Sea Colony.
JD
Sea Colony Tennis continues to offer me quality tennis instruction (both stroke and strategy) in a friendly, constructive, and postivie way(s). The Pro Shop manager (Kristen) has in the past and is presently personable, professional, and tries to ensure customer satisfaction. Alex, Thomas, Rob, and Brad as tennis instructors (professionals)were ‘at the top of their game(s)’. Each brings their personality, their experience, and excitement for the game of tennis to each clinic I attend, AND make a point of saying something to me (and the other ‘tennis bums’) as we hang around before, during, and after our ‘paid’ time. The people of Sea Colony Tennis make Sea Colony Tennis, and I highly recommend them! The Web page could use some help (from my vantage point).: 1)ability to get ‘signed up’ for clinics would be a help 2)Weekend clinics (which are highlighted) did not happen during my stay (Labor Day on). This should be announced on the Web page (not that it would make a difference in my going to Sea Colony – but it does make a difference in WHEN I get to Sea Colony) 3)Although I am able to thoroughly enjoy the clinics, a warm up time would be nice.

My children and I spent two terrific weeks at Sea Colony Tennis Resort this summer! The tennis instruction we received was exceptional at all levels — from my youngest beginners to more advanced adult, competitive play! We had private lessons daily and participated in the daily clinics. The facilities are state-of-art and beautiful.
JD
Had the time of my life! Went to Bethany for the week and enrolled in all the classes I could! I even got my extended family to join me in the Cardio tennis as they saw how much fun I was having! The instructors were great and I did take back several things to work on! I will definitely be going back each year if not more.
GG
Returned to the courts at sea colony this summer after a few years away and was very pleased to see the fresh energy and commitment of the staff. Thomas is engaging and welcoming and the instructors I had provided individual encouragement and strategy tips to suit each players game. It was challenging, fun and I highly recommend checking out the courts and classes at sea colony.
MB
The cardio tennis and clinics were well organized and tons of fun. The pros were skilled and friendly! I would definitely recommend sea colony tennis to anyone visiting
KS
Tom Johnston and his staff are friendly, knowledgable, and very talented. I attended the advanced clinic where they had 4-5 people per court. Concentrated on different part of the game each day but always teaching strategy and court coverage. Definitely improved my game. I took a private from Tom also. He picked up on subtlties to change which gave me instant improvement.
MM
Great instruction, outstanding coaches, amazing facilities and superb customer service. Crista, Pablo, Sasha and all of the guys in the Tennis Shop offered outstanding support. Thomas and Alex are exceptional! Thank you for a great summer!
MM
Fun time and great tennis at Sea Colony Resort! Thomas Johnston and his teaching professionals do a superior job of providing a high level of tennis and great workouts at their daily, advanced clinics. Great energy atmosphere! Highly recommend jumping in thse daily clinics during the summer.

Successful weekend tennis tournament at SEA COLONY RESORTS in Bethany Beach, DE – Corporate League Challenge. Staff very friendly! Location very convenient to 40+ players from Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey & Pennsylvania! We’ve already book dates for May 2012!!
MT
I attended a three-day doubles skills and strategy clinic, and would recommend Sea Colony for a low pressure, friendly environment. Particular high points were the excellent value for money and the superb tennis facilities. I didn’t have the chance to form much of an impression about the instruction, as it was a group clinic, but I do have to say two instructors in particular Alex and Dave – had several helpful comments. In fact, there were two pieces of advice that were so valuable that they made the whole weekend worthwhile.
JJ
This camp was fantastic! They really focus on minor tweaks, that really help to improve one’s game, rather than giving too much info that doesn’t stick. They are also incredibly fun, energetic and engaging. The video replay was extremely helpful.
JF
Outstaning program, very active with hitting alot of balls. Fabulous instruction from the pro Tom.
SC
Spent a weekend here with tennis instruction Fri night, Saturday, and Sunday. Different pro each day; each one was qualified and had different strengths. Good instruction, nice tennis facility.
SC
I very much enjoy the “Stroke of Day” morning clinics. Wish they were two hours instead of one. I was recently accommodated last minute in weekend clinic–nice to have this happen since it seems weekend clinics are booked well in advance and fill quickly. The new head pro Thomas is excellent. I like the facility very much–it is attractive and inviting, and located in a really nice resort beach community. I will go back often for the tennis and beach experience.
TS
I took my boys tennis team to Sea Colony and it couldn’t have been a better experience. The knowledgeable and cordial staff helped me and the kids have a great experience
PI
Strengths- Pros effectively communicate how to perform a certain stroke and provide appropriate feedback during instruction. Weaknesses- Changed one of the clinic time schedules that was agreed upon in the contract to an earlier time (from 09am to 08am).
DZ
The tennis program at sea colony is absolutely outstanding. The junior program in particular is extremely energetic, well-organized and fun. My daughter is a sectionally ranked player and she has improved immensely from her participation in the clinics and private lessons offered by the staff of Sea Colony coaches. The coaches are knowledgeable, energetic and take a personal interest in the progress of each of their students. I would encourage any parent of an aspiring junior tennis player to vacation in the wonderful town of Bethany Beach and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to improve their child’s success on the court.
DF
good instruction, nice courts. fun drills.
DC
Beautiful grounds, excellent instructors who provide great drills and tactics.Friendly staff and personal attention. No weaknesses noted.

The recent changes at Sea Colony have had a vast improvement on the whole tennis experience. The staff is warm and friendly but most importantly encouraging and knowledgeable. They have a gift for teaching in a way that is meaningful and fun at the same time. I’m already playing a more productive game as a result of what I learned. I would definitely return, as a matter of fact I look forward to it again next year.

Roving pros with great positive attitude while rotating drills & players with individual help as while. Thomas is a great leader/pro. Â
JM
Thomas was energetic and knowledgeable. He kept the drills interesting and relevant. I learned some new things and had fun. Overall a great tennis weekend with my friends and teammates. Â
MH
Loved the mini-camp. I was always disappointed when a session ended each day because it was fun and informatative. They were very accomodating and understanding with special circumstance that came up before the trip. The lead pro, Thomas, is extremely knowledgeable, personable, and up-beat, and he worked in lots of variety. He cared about what WE wanted to learn and tailored each day to our requests. Only weakness was that one of the 3 pros was not up to par. Overall recommendation would be to increase the intensity of the camp with a couple more energetic (aerobic) drills. Replacing the one pro with a more energetic pro would in itself, contibute to the intensity level. Other than that, the overall experience was fantastic. Â
KH
This was a great tennis clinic. Thomas created a relaxed environment where new skills could be learned, while having fun. He is amicable, yet focused so he gives feedback while building you up. He is good about circulating a group so that everyone gets feedback. Alex was another pro that works with him and was very helpful. Pete is fun and helpful but a little slower and lacks a little energy, otherwise a great guy. Explaining the drill and then showing you how to do it was most helpful. Many of us are visual learners so that is easier to follow and then imitate. Thank you for a great weekend full of laughs and great tennis. Â
TB
The instruction was unsurpassed. The class was fast-paced, and we got a lot of tips on how to improve our technique and our strategy. The instructors clearly enjoyed teaching, so the class was always high-energy and lots of fun. Â

After spending 4 days at an excellent camp in Florida, I really wasn’t all that psyched to go to Sea Colony simply because it’s the beginning of March and it’s cold. So indoor tennis it is. I’ve even taken the weekend 3-day (8 hour camp before – back in the days of Dave Marshall). But I have to say that I was more than pleasantly surprised. We had amazing instruction! The first day we worked on strokes but only after our coach ALEX spent some time hitting with us to really get a feel for where we were. The tips and lesson were right on the money. EXCELLENT! The next day we did another 3 hours of court positioning and strategy for doubles while incorporating the new techniques learned the day before. I finally get it! THOMAS was super! He actually got the message across to me that where I was standing was causing me to lose points. I now know when to move to the net and when NOT to. An epiphany! I would highly recommend the weekend clinic with Thomas and Alex to anyone serious about learning how to improve their game. Fun guys, great lessons, good workout, AWESOME VALUE for $200. Â
CL
I recently attended a tennis weekend camp at Sea Colony with some members from my USTA team. That was my first experience with a tennis camp, and I really enjoyed it. The indoor facility is nice, and it’s warm even when it is freezing cold outside. The instructors, Tom and Alex, are very personable. They emphasized only a few main points over the weekend, but they mixed up the drills so that we never did the same one twice. After the weekend, I definitely noticed an improvement in my doubles game. My only criticisms are that we were introduced to open-stance hitting, but we were never given enough time to adequately practice it. It might have been better to skip that. And, at first the pace of the drills was a little slow compared to what the team is accustomed, but it did increase as the weekend passed. I’m sure that if we had mentioned that we preferred a faster pace, then the instructors would have complied from the beginning. Overall, I recommend the program, and I hope to attend another weekend camp soon. Â
SH
Good instruction. Enjoyed drills that focused on doubles strategy and movement rather than swing technique. Â
TB
I brought 10 of my tennis players from upstate NY to Sea Colony for a weekend tennis camp. Within 20 minutes of being on the courts, my players were already hitting better. The instructors were extremely helpful and very personable. My players (and parents) were pleased with the weekend and it was much more than I had expected! Will definitely do it again next year and highly recommend for coaches/parents of kids interested in learning about the game of tennis.
HZ
Sea Colony was wonderful! I would highly recommend it to all!! So fun and informative. Â
SF
Great Pros (especially Tom and Alex!), responded to our requests, kept the ball moving when asked to speed it up. Â
JM
Instruction was fantastic. All coaches are very knowledgeable, friendly and fun. I was there on a ladies tennis weekend, which gave us 8 hours of instruction. We never did the same drill twice, which was great, and we all learnt A LOT! We are looking forward to returning next year ….. great atmosphere! Â
LM
After attending weekend camps the past 3 years I can honestly say I got the most out of this one. I play doubles and the focus on doubles strategy/positioning was great. I really enjoyed all the mental aspects of tennis that was incorporated into this camp. The pros did a great job in teaching concepts in a simple manner. Experienced great cardio tennis. Did drills I have never done before . Video analysis was very helpful. Would highly recommend Thomas and his staff. Â
DS
We had a great experience at Sea Colony this January. We are a group of 12 3.5 women, and we really enjoyed the instruction provided by Tom and Alex and their other instructors. Everything was explained and demonstrated clearly. I walked away with some new tactics to take my game to the next level. The facility is also very nice. Â
KE
I had an amazing time. All the coaches were so pleasant the entire time. Â

Overall, I recommend the program, and I hope to attend another weekend camp soon. Â
Good instruction. Enjoyed drills that focused on doubles strategy and movement rather than swing technique. Â
Sea Colony was wonderful! I would highly recommend it to all!! So fun and informative. Â
Great Pros (especially Tom and Alex!), responded to our requests, kept the ball moving when asked to speed it up. Â
I had an amazing time. All the coaches were so pleasant the entire time. Â
I love Sea Colony, its the greatest place I’ve ever hit.
