More than 30 people were already on the teaching courts when I joined one of the morning drop-in clinics Sea Colony runs on weekdays. It was approaching July, when every one of some 2,200 condominiums and homes fill up with summer guests and homeowners. While the beach is unquestionably the biggest draw, tennis with 34 hard and clay courts, 6 of them indoors, could easily lay claim to being the No. 2 reason people opt to vacation at Sea Colony.
Many owners told me that the deciding factor in their purchase of a home At Sea Colony was the quality of the tennis, both for them and their kids. Apart from those midweek clinics, Sea Colony’s summer roster lures players to the courts with Live Ball and Cardio sessions, doubles clinics, Nike Adult Camps, Sea Colony’s own tennis camps, custom-designed tennis getaways with optional mental-toughness component, social pro-run round robins, and a mix of junior programs running the gamut from drills and games for 4- to 7-year-olds to Nike tennis camps and tournament tough training. And the year is otherwise peppered with exhibitions, junior tournaments, demo days, and more. At any season the staff is there to help set up games, aided now by the ability of guests and members to sign up online. All of this is designed to keep tennis in the forefront of people’s consciousness.
Sea Colony dates to the early 1970s and has something of a split personality. Route 1 divides two completely different neighborhoods. On one side is the beach—a broad boulevard of soft sand bordered by dunes over which looms a phalanx of frankly rather stark 10-to-14-story towers, their harshness somewhat relieved by long dune-fronting boardwalks, broad patios, and the occasional swimming pool, one of them indoors. On the opposite side of the highway, a tiny marketplace of shops and restaurants marks the entrance to a leafy and altogether tranquil community of residential streets with low-rise condominiums and homes, lakes, ponds, swimming pools, and a $7.5 million fitness and aquatics center, linked to one another and the beach by trams and dedicated bike paths.
Sea Colony boasts a top-tier tennis and pickleball facility—a three-time winner of the USTA Outstanding Facility of the Year award, most recently in 2022—and a wide range of programs that serve as a tremendous asset. This excellence is further enhanced by the friendly and always-helpful staff. With a talented team of professionals, including college and former college players, Sea Colony continues to deliver exceptional racquet sports experiences for players of all levels.
Tennis Programs: During the busy summer season, there are daily adult clinics, daily Cardio sessions, and a variety of junior clinics for various ages from Monday through Friday. There are as many as five round robins weekly during the busy summer. At any season the staff is there to help set up games, aided now by the ability of guests and members to sign up online (see Sea Colony Tennis for a detailed overview of all things tennis). And roughly once a month from April to October, some sort of special event—a professional, sanctioned, or social tournament, a visiting pro, or an exhibition—rounds out the program. And during the summer months of June to August there are two or three NIKE adult tennis camps each month (ALERT: these tend to sell out early). Beyond that, Sea Colony offers tailor-made weekend camps for small groups.
On paper, this all appears to be rock-solid choice of tennis options, but what sets them apart is the number of participants. On a day in August when temperatures had soared above 95 degrees, more than 30 adults and juniors turned out for the 10 a.m. intermediate clinic and another 30-plus attended the advanced clinic. I also counted 20 beginners in afternoon junior clinic, which had astutely been scheduled for the indoor courts.
Tennis aside, Sea Colony has also made the move into pickleball with four permanent courts and blended lines on 14 of the tennis courts and an additional 4 permanent courts, a total of 8 with lights. Certified pickleball instructors are available for clinics and private lessons, supplemented by pickleball and hybrid tennis and pickleball camps for adults (including some for advanced pickleball), and NIKE camps for juniors. Instruction aside, Sea Colony stages pickleball clinics, social round robins, and a variety of morning and evening Open Plays sessions for all levels. Court Complex. Although there are four lighted hard courts at the beach, the real tennis action takes place at the main tennis center. It comprises six indoor hard courts with sandwiched between another six outdoor courts and 14 Har-Tru courts. There are and additional four hard courts in the trees across the road, two of those now sporting blended lines to accommodate pickleball. Grand Central Station for tennis is the pro shop on the ground floor of the indoor building. Above it, a long viewing area overlooks the indoor courts and has a bar for use in special events. It opens in back onto a broad deck with a panoramic perspective on the Har-Tru courts, where The Vacasa Pro Women’s Open, a $25K Pro Circuit event, takes place in May. Although the pro shop closes at 7 p.m., those well-lighted indoor courts remain open on a first-come, first-served basis until 10 p.m.
Court fees: None, not even for the indoor courts.
Off Court
Beach: Sea Colony fronts ½ mile of Bethany Beach, a broad boulevard of soft sand washed by the Atlantic Ocean. A free shuttle takes guests from Sea Colony West (where the tennis center is) across Route 1 to the beach.
Fitness Center:Â A short walk from the tennis center is $7.5 million multi-use fitness and aquatic center with indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a snack bar, gymnasium, and a well-equipped workout room. Personal trainers are available as are a variety of classes, including spinning, Zumba (both aquatic and dry land), yoga, Barre toning, and water aerobics.
Bike paths lace Sea Colony West making it easy for kids to get from houses and townhomes there to the tennis courts, fitness center, or marketplace (though to reach the beach they have to cross busy Route 1).
Children's programs: Colony Kids and Club Sea Colony take kids for 2 and 4 hours respectively for a mix of swimming, games, crafts, and other diversions.
Dining: The Marketplace at the entrance to Sea Colony has two restaurants: several restaurants, Fin’s Ale House and Armand’s Pizza among them, but there are numerous other choices within easy driving distance in Bethany and Fenwick Beaches.
Accommodations
Lodging consists of 1-to-5 bedroom condos and houses, some oceanfront, others near the tennis complex. During the summer, one-week bookings are required.
Getting there
Seasons: Year-round thanks to its indoor courts.
Travel Instructions: The nearest major airports are Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI) and Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), each roughly a 2½-hour drive from Bethany Beach. The alternative is to fly into Salisbury Regional Airport (SBY) in Salisbury, MD, which is approximately 45 minutes’ drive south of Bethany Beach.
Arranged a special family tennis camp in May 2012 for my sister’s 50hth. WONDERFUL time was had by all from beginner 10-year old to 4.5 60 year old! Stayed at a lovely condo, walked to courts, wonderful instructors and facilities.
AK
Sea Colony is by far the best tennis facility on the east coast! The pros cater their teaching methods to the pupil, not necessarily changing the stroke, but perhaps only tweeking their stroke for improved results. I’m looking forward to attending another camp soon.
SB
The staff was kind and very knowledgeable. We covered all the highlights and it was perfectly paced (especially for me). My favorite thing about it was that we got to do free play at the beginning instead of the end of each day. Sometimes I wish we could have covered less variety and concentrated on getting a few things down pat, but I don’t think that was a huge negative and I don’t think that’s what the group as a whole wanted. I will absolutely return! I’m looking forward to seeing the new courts completed and the pro shop reopened. I missed getting my Tshirt!
JM
I loved our clinic. The instructors were great and fun to work with. I was looking for a better understanding of doubles strategy because I’m a singles player transitioning to more doubles this year. I thought 3 hours for a clinic was going to be too long, but the time went fast. The instructors all worked very well together. I plan to take a clinic or a lesson everytime I go to Bethany. Weakness-I can’t really think of any.
TZ
When I joined the Simpler Camp from Maryland, I was familiar with Sea Colony and their wonderful staff. They met every expectation and more. Great instruction with fun doubles drills along with a very professional and upbeat staff of Tennis Professionals. You will be very pleased to come to this beautiful resort, with the best tennis facility and staff.Thank you Krista, Thomas, Alex and Dexter. Thank you for a wonderful time!
TA
I learned more from this tennis clinic than any clinic I have ever atteneded. The pros are not only very knowledgeabe, they possess outstanding communication skills making it easy to understand what they want you to do and making it easy to implement new techniques. I’ve been playing tennis for almost 40 years and cannot say enough good things about the coaches.
MH
This was the best camp I had been to in the 10 years I’ve been going to camps. The instruction was personable and appropriate for out level (4.0). All 6 of us had great pointers to take-away and practice, and we’re already interested in doing this again in the Fall (instead of waiting another year)! Thank you, Thomas and Alex!!!
ME
Sea Colony is a fantastic place for teams to get ready for their season. The professional instructions were right on for our level and the pros were willing to adjust to meet our needs. Great place and Great Pros.
PC
Outstanding tennis instruction. Pros kept us moving at all times. Fun and energetic staff. Great strategic tips and individiual pointers.

I attended a weekend tennis camp during February so I was not able to be able to take advantage of the resort offerings that would be available in the summer. Additionally, the pro shop and indoor courts were under construction so I cannot accurately comment on those amenitities however, it sounds like the new structure will be amazing and I cannot wait to see it next year. That being said, I had a great time and enjoyed the tennis! The pro staff was very helpful, friendly and personable, and full of good tips on strokes, court positioning and strategy. It was a pleasure working with the staff and getting the personal attention. I know I will play better this year as a result of my time at this camp. I highly recommend their camps and clinics and will definitely be back for more.
DH
Sea Colony is wonderful. The staff is friendly no matter what – they do whatever they can to make you feel comfortable. The pros are EXCELLENT (Thomas and Alejandro)! I learn so much when I go there and they way it is conveyed makes it very easy to remember and apply later. I will definitely return again and again! I am also looking forward to the construction being finished and it’s good to see them making improvements.
AM
My 3.5 league team went as a group to the Sea Colony tennis club for a total of 8 hours of instruction time over a weekend. Tom, Alex and Dex were wonderful instructors who worked to improve our game by working on movement on court and ball direction. They also gave insightful instruction on individual players swings but without changing up everything that usually only results in more confusion. I can honestly say that that one weekend improved my game.
SH
Excellent tennis weekend with great instruction, fun drills and helpful tips.
EO
The instruction is consistent, positive, and accurate. The pros are friendly and made us all feel successful. We will definitely return next year!
TH
Great facilities and tremendous pro-staff! We returned for a weekend camp after going last year and it was even better! The video anaysis was incredibly useful and the take-home handout has been a great reminder of things covered during the weekend.
GM
Our 6th year at Sea Colony. The operation of the tennis center has significantly improved since Thomas Johnston arrival. Head pro Alex is superb in both clinics and lessons. There are couple of other younger pros that are coming along in the intensity of instructions. The courts condition is superb. Great place for families keen on tennis, however there is plenty other staff to do- beach, golf and YES shopping just 10 miles away.
KB
Sea Colony is a great resort that has so many things to offer including wonderful everyday (mon-fri) clinics depending on your skill level and also great pros.
SO
Sea Colony and Sea Colony Tennis Resort are ideal for both a relaxing seaside getaway combined with tennis. The resort has excellent housing accommodations with abundant crystal clear pools, miles of beach and always available tennis courts. We rented through ResortQuest and found them to be extremely helpful, honest in their offerings and impressively friendly. BTW, the residents and staff (including local waitstaff) were probably some of the most helpful and cheerful people we have ever met while on vacation. It certainly adds to the quality of your stay. Regarding Sea Colony Tennis, I as a 3.0-3.5 player, certainly gained in my tennis skills and doubles strategy. Thomas Johnston, as the new director, maintains a very well run tennis facility. The courts are immaculate and fresh cold water on every court certainly adds to the positive atmosphere. Thomas and Alex Justiniani, the Head Pro, are two of the best tennis pros-in my opinion. They quickly identified the skills my husband and friends and myself needed to improve and provided us with usuable tips. Some of the two worded idioms they use for motivation and knowledge are indispensable. On doubles strategy, they have helped our game tremendously. The other pro, Dexter, is new, and shows good promise. He specifically is very good with pouching systems and serve improvement. We were enrolled in the daily clinics and the Fri-Sun. Tennis Camp. And, the only real negative involves the daily clinics. They are often lacking in intensity (as Ponte Vedra’s Robin Leach)and very short on any instruction. The price per person for an hour of $20/25 is very steep for just a few non-intensive drills. Sometimes the number of participants would exceed the four ratio (one pro per 4 players) and then it really got annoying. The junior pros need much more training before they conduct drills. Compared to Ponte Vedre and Cliff Drysdale Tennis School at Stratton, where the clinics are all conducted by top pros daily. My suggestion would be for the junior pros to assist in the daily clinics. The three day weekend camp was also worthwhile…with one caveat. Three hours seemed too long a stretch. Perhaps, two hours is much more suitable per session. The pros and the players seem to run out of enthusiasm. While we were there, Sea Colony was hosting a semi-pro women’s single tournament. It was so enjoyable to watch. We would highly recommend Sea Colony and its Tennis Facility and camp. It is great place to enjoy your tennis and beach and sea resort.
KS
Definitely nothing to complain about, it was a wonderful experience and I think I actually have a forehand shot now! 🙂 Thank you.
TK
I highly recommend Sea Colony tennis camp. The teaching staff are top notch and highly effective. I learned more from our instructor, Alex Justiani, in one hour than in years of drills & clinics! He had a knack for explaining and demonstrating techniques in a way that could be quickly grasped and applied. My husband and I will definitely come back.
LD
We are a group of eight women who play tennis together in Northern Virginia. We went to Sea Colony for a 3 day camp and the experience was exceptional. The instructors were fun, friendly, very engaging, and really knew how to give instruction and run great drills. I will be returning in the future for this camp again.
JM
Thomas and Alex are not only super pros with great teaching styles, they are lots of fun. Our group chose a 3 day camp with about 3 hours of tennis each day leaving plenty of time for socializing and some really great food. Since it was mid week and off season Bethany Beach was very peaceful. I would highly recommend Sea Colony for anyone looking to improve their tennis and to relax away from their busy city lives.
EG
Just completed the Sea Colony Weekend Tennis Camp with 7 friends. Thomas and Alex are fantastic pros. They gave us very useful strategy hints as well as individual technique improvements. They are extremely knowledgeable tennis professionals who are also very entertaining. We had a lot of fun and everyone came away with specific tips on how to improve our game.
RB
Great tennis program and outstanding beach resort. Solid, highly qualified tennis instruction and staff. Clinics are focused and exciting. Facility is outstanding with both indoor and outdoor courts.
KJ
beautiful resort and facility. the staff is great with my kids and keeps them motivated throughout the lessons.
JO
Great Facility, and very professional staff. New programs and events always happening! Junior program is on the rise with a promising future.

The Sea Colony Tennis Camp is a top rate program with very personable and knowledgeable instructors who will improve your game in just one weekend. They offer private and group sessions for all skill levels and my favorite is the Cardio Tennis session. This will not only improve your tennis game but will increase your heart rate higher then you ever thought it would go. Located in a pristine tennis community with several amenities including Har-Tru courts, hard courts, indoor and outdoor pools, weight rooms, indoor and outdoor basketball courts and best of all, a short walk to the Atlantic Ocean to relax until the next day’s tennis class. Your dining choices range from casual to a more elegant setting and for nightly entertainment you have several choices from a family atmosphere right next to Sea Colony, to a more party atmosphere just a few miles north and south of Sea Colony. The only problem with going to Sea Colony is that you won’t want to leave. A visit to Sea Colony will be something you won’t regret.
LG
Strengths: Instruction was great. Well thought out. Moved our group continuously and energetically through multiple skills instruction. Instructors were very knowledgeable and eager to help. The spirit of the weekend was high intensity with light heartedness. Weaknesses: I didn’t stay long enough.
GQ
I went there during February and took 7 of my tennis buddies. The head pro helped our experience out by allowing both groups to play on side by side courts the entire weekend; and I know he had to move some folks around to accomodate that. The facility indoor is fantastic. The Ocean view even in February was fantastic. The unit accomodations were first rate, very clean and attractively priced. Nearby restaurants added to a great weekend. I have been taking my tennis buddies there for 8 years in a row for a winter tennis getaway, and it keeps getting better every year. Thanks Tom Johnson and Sea Colony. Great job.
BB
All skill levels are made to feel welcome. Very inclusive.
KA
Have visited and participated at this wonderful tennis club over the years — and have always experienced superb results– whether for basic or specific needs, social or advanced recreational tennis, individual or group lessons, clinics, gender oriented or open, adult, adolescents, or seniors, etc. More recently, specifically planned USTA team weekend camp last year, including video pointers, preparing for my team’s MidAtlantic USTA Nationals Competition in Surprise, Arizona. Tennis site offers a full range of other activities and is located minutes from the Atlantic Ocean. Bring a bike or rent one and enjoy off-court-time fun! Indoor facilities available for those needing ac or weather prevents use of their outdoor courts. A win-win location and Club.
RW
Friendly, capable staff. Good communications to members via email. The pro in charge is outstanding. The indoor court surfaces are showing their age.
RP
Strength: Great drills. Worked on all different types of shots and also alot of strategy. Emphasis on communication and playing smart. Great facilities and all around a fun and educational experience. Video analysis and speed testing. Weaknesses: One of the instructors did not seem very enthusiastic (He was just an assistant helping out I think)
DC
Excellent facility, well maintained outstanding staff. Everyone works hard at making guests feel more than welcome, more like a friend.
JL
This camp was great. The strengths were the drills and instruction we received. The weakness was lack of additional tennis besides the clinics.
AB
One strength was instructor Alex, very enthusiastic and energetic. Weakness pace was way too slow. A few of the instructors talked way to much and did not feed enough balls. Too basic, was not advanced enough for higher level of play
CA
I loved the Sea Colony tennis camp so much I went a second time last year with my other tennis team. Thomas and his staff, especially Alex, were awesome instructors. They had great tips and made it fun while taking our questions and thoughts seriously. I was bumped up to 4.0 this year and I have them to thank for it.
LO
Awesome tennis instructors and facilities. Instructors really take the time to know you and your game and quickly became coaches for our doubles teams. Well underway with our season and we are using all of the instruction to remain undefeated!
CW
I would highly recommend the Sea Colony Tennis Weekend Camp for players looking to improve their game or as a team tuneup for league play. We received personalized attention from the knowledgeable pros there, and received tips on technique, strategy, and the mental game. The level of our group was 3.5 to 4.0, and we found the level appropriately challenging. The facility was in good shape, and there are a number of housing choices in the community. We did the camp in the early Spring, and found the accommodations to be very reasonable. The community is very attractive, and includes nice fitness centers and pools. The Bethany Beach/ Rehoboth area is very nice, with lots of restaurants, shopping, and beautiful beaches.
BS
Excellent tennis instruction, kept the kids moving. Interactive and respectful. Good, clean facilities.
LV
Highly recommend: friendly, helpful, lovely environment, enthusiastic instruction. Could have league play/teams or more social events.
GW
Fabulous facility. Many courts so reserving is not an issue. Well maintained courts and clubhouse. Part of an incredible resort complex, you have tennis, the beach, pools, Oceanside condos, woodland villas, variety of children and adult activities (when you need a break from all that tennis) and lots of shops and restaurants—-all within close walking distance. Bethany Beach and its area was just rated one of top ten best secrets in the world!!!
DR
friendly, good teaching, great facillities
NB
Excellent teaching and friendly atmosphere
IS
Great location, great weather, exceptional tennis facility and abundant competent friendly staff. Alex helped me a lot with one handed backhand. He was Delaware teaching pro of the year. Can’t wait to go back.
DS
Sea Colony is amazing for kids! My son has thrived in their private lessons and clinics program. He has developed a love for the sport that is nurtured each summer by the team at Sea Colony.
TB
Great facility with nearly 40 courts that are just a few minutes walk to the beach. The staff is top-notch and they offer terrific and affordable clinics nearly every morning for players of all levels. Just a 2-3 hour drive from Philadelphia, Wilmington, Baltimore, and Washington, DC.
CA
Super instructors and lots of tennis courts. Very capable staff and courteous staff. Lots of fun clinics, plus the staff will match you up with players at your level if you are from out of town.
GS
Personalized coaching, amazing instruction and superb facilities. One of the best Tennis experiences I’ve had. The resort could benefit from having bar and diner.
MM
Thomas and Alex do a superb job with players of every level. They provide each player with practical, specific tips at the end of every clinic. They both bring great energy to the court!

Friendly, capable staff. Good communications to members via email. The pro in charge is outstanding. The indoor court surfaces are showing their age.
Excellent facility, well maintained outstanding staff. Everyone works hard at making guests feel more than welcome, more like a friend.
This camp was great. The strengths were the drills and instruction we received. The weakness was lack of additional tennis besides the clinics.
One strength was instructor Alex, very enthusiastic and energetic. Weakness pace was way too slow. A few of the instructors talked way to much and did not feed enough balls. Too basic, was not advanced enough for higher level of play
Awesome tennis instructors and facilities. Instructors really take the time to know you and your game and quickly became coaches for our doubles teams. Well underway with our season and we are using all of the instruction to remain undefeated!
Excellent tennis instruction, kept the kids moving. Interactive and respectful. Good, clean facilities.
Highly recommend: friendly, helpful, lovely environment, enthusiastic instruction. Could have league play/teams or more social events.
Bethany Beach and its area was just rated one of top ten best secrets in the world!!!
friendly, good teaching, great facillities
Excellent teaching and friendly atmosphere
Great location, great weather, exceptional tennis facility and abundant competent friendly staff. Alex helped me a lot with one handed backhand. He was Delaware teaching pro of the year. Can’t wait to go back.
Sea Colony is amazing for kids! My son has thrived in their private lessons and clinics program. He has developed a love for the sport that is nurtured each summer by the team at Sea Colony.
Super instructors and lots of tennis courts. Very capable staff and courteous staff. Lots of fun clinics, plus the staff will match you up with players at your level if you are from out of town.
Personalized coaching, amazing instruction and superb facilities. One of the best Tennis experiences I’ve had. The resort could benefit from having bar and diner.
Thomas and Alex do a superb job with players of every level. They provide each player with practical, specific tips at the end of every clinic. They both bring great energy to the court!
