More than 30 people were already on the teaching courts when I joined one of the morning drop-in clinics Sea Colony runs on weekdays. It was approaching July, when every one of some 2,200 condominiums and homes fill up with summer guests and homeowners. While the beach is unquestionably the biggest draw, tennis with 34 hard and clay courts, 6 of them indoors, could easily lay claim to being the No. 2 reason people opt to vacation at Sea Colony.
Many owners told me that the deciding factor in their purchase of a home At Sea Colony was the quality of the tennis, both for them and their kids. Apart from those midweek clinics, Sea Colony’s summer roster lures players to the courts with Live Ball and Cardio sessions, doubles clinics, Nike Adult Camps, Sea Colony’s own tennis camps, custom-designed tennis getaways with optional mental-toughness component, social pro-run round robins, and a mix of junior programs running the gamut from drills and games for 4- to 7-year-olds to Nike tennis camps and tournament tough training. And the year is otherwise peppered with exhibitions, junior tournaments, demo days, and more. At any season the staff is there to help set up games, aided now by the ability of guests and members to sign up online. All of this is designed to keep tennis in the forefront of people’s consciousness.
Sea Colony dates to the early 1970s and has something of a split personality. Route 1 divides two completely different neighborhoods. On one side is the beach—a broad boulevard of soft sand bordered by dunes over which looms a phalanx of frankly rather stark 10-to-14-story towers, their harshness somewhat relieved by long dune-fronting boardwalks, broad patios, and the occasional swimming pool, one of them indoors. On the opposite side of the highway, a tiny marketplace of shops and restaurants marks the entrance to a leafy and altogether tranquil community of residential streets with low-rise condominiums and homes, lakes, ponds, swimming pools, and a $7.5 million fitness and aquatics center, linked to one another and the beach by trams and dedicated bike paths.
Sea Colony boasts a top-tier tennis and pickleball facility—a three-time winner of the USTA Outstanding Facility of the Year award, most recently in 2022—and a wide range of programs that serve as a tremendous asset. This excellence is further enhanced by the friendly and always-helpful staff. With a talented team of professionals, including college and former college players, Sea Colony continues to deliver exceptional racquet sports experiences for players of all levels.
Tennis Programs: During the busy summer season, there are daily adult clinics, daily Cardio sessions, and a variety of junior clinics for various ages from Monday through Friday. There are as many as five round robins weekly during the busy summer. At any season the staff is there to help set up games, aided now by the ability of guests and members to sign up online (see Sea Colony Tennis for a detailed overview of all things tennis). And roughly once a month from April to October, some sort of special event—a professional, sanctioned, or social tournament, a visiting pro, or an exhibition—rounds out the program. And during the summer months of June to August there are two or three NIKE adult tennis camps each month (ALERT: these tend to sell out early). Beyond that, Sea Colony offers tailor-made weekend camps for small groups.
On paper, this all appears to be rock-solid choice of tennis options, but what sets them apart is the number of participants. On a day in August when temperatures had soared above 95 degrees, more than 30 adults and juniors turned out for the 10 a.m. intermediate clinic and another 30-plus attended the advanced clinic. I also counted 20 beginners in afternoon junior clinic, which had astutely been scheduled for the indoor courts.
Tennis aside, Sea Colony has also made the move into pickleball with four permanent courts and blended lines on 14 of the tennis courts and an additional 4 permanent courts, a total of 8 with lights. Certified pickleball instructors are available for clinics and private lessons, supplemented by pickleball and hybrid tennis and pickleball camps for adults (including some for advanced pickleball), and NIKE camps for juniors. Instruction aside, Sea Colony stages pickleball clinics, social round robins, and a variety of morning and evening Open Plays sessions for all levels. Court Complex. Although there are four lighted hard courts at the beach, the real tennis action takes place at the main tennis center. It comprises six indoor hard courts with sandwiched between another six outdoor courts and 14 Har-Tru courts. There are and additional four hard courts in the trees across the road, two of those now sporting blended lines to accommodate pickleball. Grand Central Station for tennis is the pro shop on the ground floor of the indoor building. Above it, a long viewing area overlooks the indoor courts and has a bar for use in special events. It opens in back onto a broad deck with a panoramic perspective on the Har-Tru courts, where The Vacasa Pro Women’s Open, a $25K Pro Circuit event, takes place in May. Although the pro shop closes at 7 p.m., those well-lighted indoor courts remain open on a first-come, first-served basis until 10 p.m.
Court fees: None, not even for the indoor courts.
Off Court
Beach: Sea Colony fronts ½ mile of Bethany Beach, a broad boulevard of soft sand washed by the Atlantic Ocean. A free shuttle takes guests from Sea Colony West (where the tennis center is) across Route 1 to the beach.
Fitness Center:Â A short walk from the tennis center is $7.5 million multi-use fitness and aquatic center with indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a snack bar, gymnasium, and a well-equipped workout room. Personal trainers are available as are a variety of classes, including spinning, Zumba (both aquatic and dry land), yoga, Barre toning, and water aerobics.
Bike paths lace Sea Colony West making it easy for kids to get from houses and townhomes there to the tennis courts, fitness center, or marketplace (though to reach the beach they have to cross busy Route 1).
Children's programs: Colony Kids and Club Sea Colony take kids for 2 and 4 hours respectively for a mix of swimming, games, crafts, and other diversions.
Dining: The Marketplace at the entrance to Sea Colony has two restaurants: several restaurants, Fin’s Ale House and Armand’s Pizza among them, but there are numerous other choices within easy driving distance in Bethany and Fenwick Beaches.
Accommodations
Lodging consists of 1-to-5 bedroom condos and houses, some oceanfront, others near the tennis complex. During the summer, one-week bookings are required.
Getting there
Seasons: Year-round thanks to its indoor courts.
Travel Instructions: The nearest major airports are Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI) and Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), each roughly a 2½-hour drive from Bethany Beach. The alternative is to fly into Salisbury Regional Airport (SBY) in Salisbury, MD, which is approximately 45 minutes’ drive south of Bethany Beach.
great atmosphere at the tennis facility.. love the har-tru surfaces. Tennis instructors great.. The beach location adds a bonus to the tennis facility.. after tennis can relax at the beach or the pools.. fitness center very good.. Staff good at matching for games and hitting.. plentiful choice of rental properties to stay at while using the tennis facility. Crowded indoor during inclement weather.

Terrific facility with great teachers
RF
Strengths: 1) Outstanding personnel, including the Tennis Director (Thomas Johnston), his staff, and the teaching pros; 2) 34 perfect courts (14 Har-Tru, 6 indoor, 14 pro-surface outdoor), all of which are in like-new condition; 3) fully stocked newly renovated pro shop, which includes a world-class racket-stringing professional (Krista); 4) surrounded by a beautiful vacation environment less than 1 mile from the Atlantic ocean; 5) numerous great restaurants within a few miles of the complex Weaknesses: None

Sea Colony Tennis Camp is a terrific facility. The grounds are beautiful and wonderfully maintained. The clubhouse was recently expanded and refurbished, and is among the most player-friendly I have ever seen. The staff is top-drawer and professional in every sense of the word, and makes every effort to accommodate guests and residents alike. A variety of events is offered for every player level. Lighted courts are available for those who prefer to play in the cool of the evening. The only criticism I have to offer is that, if you prefer to play at 7 AM, sometimes water is not available court-side. And I do wish they would make some kinds of snacks and athletic drinks available in the pro shop.
JK
The setting is idyllic – a tennis resort located within a beach community. Its proximity to major cities (DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia) make it a an easy weekend trip. I have visited here both on and off season. In season, the beach community is very vibrant with lots of visitors and wonderful restaurants. For tennis, the daily clinics are well attended with over 4 to 6 courts of participants, grouped by skill level. The clinics are very well run and focus on a different skill set each day. In the offseason, the community is extremely quiet and many of the restaurants are not open year round. It is a great time to attend a camp. The camps run Friday through Sunday and are a real bargain. The recently expanded indoor courts now have 6 courts available; the only negative of the expansion is the camps are so popular that you may not have much time with one of the actual Sea Colony pros – pros from the nearby area are brought in to help run the clinics. The ones that worked with our group were good and were flexible with working on areas which we wanted to focus. They even videotaped some of our strokes, which was very helpful in seeing where you could improve.
SG
They run excellent clinics for all levels of play. The court our kept in great shape and they have 2 different surfaces hard and clay. The instructors make the clinic fun while working on differnt shots. The clinics are reasonablly priced and you can get extra court time to play on your at most times. It is tranquil and beautiful there and I always have a great time.
BG
The strengths were: We received personalized suggestions and instruction in the context of being instructed as a group. We combined strategy sessions with the basics (including improving strokes, volleys and servces). The atmosphere was stimulating, yet also relaxing. We watched videos of ourselves and the analysis was incredibly helpful.
VL
The coaching staff members are excellent particarly learning from the Director of Tennis Thomas. The coaches explain very clearly to us what we need to do or work on. The video taping of our serves are great to correct the techniques for better serve in the future. It will be great to expand the video taping to the ground strokes and volleys. We have a lot of fun in the 3 days camp!!
ML
I thought the instruction and facilities were excellent. I would love to come again!
BC
I thought this was an excellent camp. The instructors knew my name by the end of the first session, kept pointers on the positive side, worked with my exsisting strokes, did not overwhelm me with to much information, and kept the camp flowing (little standing around time). Overall there were very helpful and positive.
JK
The camp was great and instruction very helpful

Sea Colongy teennis camps are absolutely fabulous! A great way to spend a winter weekend with friends!
SR
Great facility. Great drills and instruction. Kept us moving.
CD
Beautiful location. Excellent facilities. The courts are in perfect shape. The coaches provide well directed drills aimed at improving specific skills.using a lot of positive reinforcements and personal attention. Everyone who plays tennis should experience a Sea Colony camp.
ES
Great drills. They kept us moving and focused on just a few things rather than overwhelming us with too many tips. Instructors were very fun and very helpful. Would love to come back. The facilities were AWESOME!
JM
Top-notch tennis program with fun, engaging professionals. Many skills were improved, new lessons learned, old habits broken and memories of a lifetime created! My large group from Harford County women tennis players are now returning twice a year for this camp! Worth every penny….what are you waiting for??

I have vacationed at Sea Colony since 1990 – always renting/staying in the nearby Sea Colony West tennis community villas/verandas. The tennis instruction/organization of clinics and private lessons is OUTSTANDING. Thomas Johnston has brought back to this special tennis facility a new level of professionalism. Thomas is a terrific teacher/mentor and so encouraging to those of us requiring constant “remediation” of our game! Thomas recruited back as #2 pro Alex Justiniani. Together, Thomas and Alex run a very popular summer vacationer clinic program at the same time as hosting a strong junior development/Nike camp. I have personally benefitted from knowing the younger teen/pre-teen players – the commitment shown to the adult player and to the developing player by Thomas is unsurpassed. I have participated in tennis programs at NE Tennis Holidays, Hilton Head’s Stan Smith and Van Der Meer programs. The best individualized training/attention that I have received has been from Thomas Johnston at Sea Colony!
MM
Thomas and Alex are hands down the most talented and insightful pros I’ve ever worked with. Whether it’s doubles strategy, serve or stroke production they have made me a better, smarter player.
MB
I had a blast during our camp at the Sea Colony! We received wonderful instruction from very knowledgeable pros that will help propel my game to the next level.
TP
Thomas Johnston is a real asset at Sea Colony, he has impeccable experience and knows how to create a well rounded and complete tennis program. Keep him happy Sea Colony…he is a big part of us coming to your resort every year. I know we are not the only ones who feel this way. Thanks Thomas.
BC
I attended a camp in September and was blown away by the attention to detail each instructor gives. The Director of Tennis, Thomas Johnston, has a wonderful program set up to cater all ages and ability levels. Thomas’ personality and his hospitable nature will surely have us back in no time! We loved Sea Colony!
RS
Thomas and Dexter were very accommodating of the needs of our group (10-player team) and made sure to provide quality instruction to each player. Dexter was with us the most; his suggestions and helpful hints created nearly unbeatable doubles teams during our season. Our singles players, however, benefited from the attacking drills and recognizing the importance of court positioning to shot selection. The various drills were challenging, but were fun & competitive, and our collective improvement over a five day period was amazing. The facility is fantastic – renovations just about complete – a ton of outdoor courts (in great condition) and on the one rainy day, we were able to use the indoor courts without any problem. We definitely will return and have only good things to say about both the tennis and the accommodations at Sea Colony!
MB
Great drills and detailed instruction! Our pro Alex was terrific and lots of fun!
MO
Great place and awesome tennis pros in particular, Alex!!!
MW
Well organized, good drills, good coaching. The building was in the midst of being renovated without a convenient bathroom. It might have been nice to have had the weekend camp discounted because of this, and the entry wasn’t easy to get in and out. This is of course a temporary inconvenience. Expressed some specific interest in working on serves but little time spent on serving. A previous time we were videotaped and this was very helpful. This time it wasn’t included. The Director on previous visits has been involved in coaching. Again, not available this trip.
LB
Our Tennis instructor Alex always provides both a great workout and very construct improvements to my game. I always leave my Sea Colony tennis weekends feeling my game has improved. This is completely due to the skill, manner and professionalism of our coach Alex.

This is our favorite weekend of each tennis season. Our 2.5 women’s tennis team goes for an intense weekend of clinics and instruction. The lessons are so wonderful that we absolutely leave as better tennis players. Plus it’s a great bonding experience for our team. Sea Colony has so much to offer as far as amenities. But it’s biggest assest is it’s instructors. They are so talented, great at telling us how to tweak our strokes and their work makes all the difference in our games. Amazing experience!
JD
Sea Colony is the best resort I have been to. It has great pros who are friendly, learn your name, and really want to help you learn. Sea Colony has also done a great job of promoting tennis at all levels. By this I mean you will find games from 3.0 to 5.0 on any given day, and it is not too clique-y. I think this welcoming spirit comes from the tone set by the pros, who don’t just focus on the best players.
TP
The Sea Colony Junior Tennis Program is fantastic! Unmatched on the Eastern Shore of Maryland (and beyond). The program works to introduce young tennis players through high school players to tennis, but more than that it works to develop these players into competitive players who have a passion for the game. The instructors definitely have a real interest in developing these future tennis players – you can tell this through their professionalism, fun on the courts, hard work and drive that they deliver. I drive over an hour to and from Sea Colony so my daughter can be part of this program – and it is worth every minute!
SC
The tennis program is the best I have ever participated in. The instructors are friendly and knowledgeable…they make clinics fun and you learn so much.
MM
Although I have not personally been a participant of a camp at Sea Colony, the many positive comments I have heard about the instructors are wonderful. The only negatives I have heard is about the facility which this year was noisy, dusty and dirty – which stands to reason with all the work which is going on.
TR
We really enjoyed our instructor, Alex who gave us valuable insights on our game individually and as a doubles team. Loved all the net play, ground strokes, overheads (that we really don’t do a lot of with our pros back home)and serves. It was so personal and felt like I could bring my game up a notch after these lessons. I would absolutely return and with more friends!!

Sea Colony Tennis in Bethany Beach, DE has it all– excellent in all categories–facilities, location, staff –providing learning/ growing, playing opportunities for all ages and abilities. It is a great place to vacation and to live. I highly recommend Sea Cony Tennis. I have visited ,vacationed, and participated in other tennis communities. I rate Sea Colony superior to all.

We love Sea Colony. The setting is beautiful and the resort has a low key family-fun type of atmosphere. The tennis staff does a great job of interacting with folks who are vacationing there, and the instruction is top-notch.
CD
Great tennis camp – very informative and they kept us moving the entire time. Pros were friendly and knowledgable. Great ladies weekend!
CF
Cardio tennis and clinics should be for owners only and significantly cheaper
DA
I just love it. I think the summer drop-in sessions on M – F, really help beginner to advanced players hone their skills at a great price. Plenty of pro’s to assist. For the past two years I have come with fellow lady players to a weekend clinic which is fabulous. Pro “Alex” is the best . . . informative, challenging and charming as well. I highly recommend.

Camp was great. the pros were most helpful. Been going gor about 5 years with a group of ladies and last year was the best.
