More than 30 people were already on the teaching courts when I joined one of the morning drop-in clinics Sea Colony runs on weekdays. It was approaching July, when every one of some 2,200 condominiums and homes fill up with summer guests and homeowners. While the beach is unquestionably the biggest draw, tennis with 34 hard and clay courts, 6 of them indoors, could easily lay claim to being the No. 2 reason people opt to vacation at Sea Colony.
Many owners told me that the deciding factor in their purchase of a home At Sea Colony was the quality of the tennis, both for them and their kids. Apart from those midweek clinics, Sea Colony’s summer roster lures players to the courts with Live Ball and Cardio sessions, doubles clinics, Nike Adult Camps, Sea Colony’s own tennis camps, custom-designed tennis getaways with optional mental-toughness component, social pro-run round robins, and a mix of junior programs running the gamut from drills and games for 4- to 7-year-olds to Nike tennis camps and tournament tough training. And the year is otherwise peppered with exhibitions, junior tournaments, demo days, and more. At any season the staff is there to help set up games, aided now by the ability of guests and members to sign up online. All of this is designed to keep tennis in the forefront of people’s consciousness.
Sea Colony dates to the early 1970s and has something of a split personality. Route 1 divides two completely different neighborhoods. On one side is the beach—a broad boulevard of soft sand bordered by dunes over which looms a phalanx of frankly rather stark 10-to-14-story towers, their harshness somewhat relieved by long dune-fronting boardwalks, broad patios, and the occasional swimming pool, one of them indoors. On the opposite side of the highway, a tiny marketplace of shops and restaurants marks the entrance to a leafy and altogether tranquil community of residential streets with low-rise condominiums and homes, lakes, ponds, swimming pools, and a $7.5 million fitness and aquatics center, linked to one another and the beach by trams and dedicated bike paths.
Sea Colony boasts a top-tier tennis and pickleball facility—a three-time winner of the USTA Outstanding Facility of the Year award, most recently in 2022—and a wide range of programs that serve as a tremendous asset. This excellence is further enhanced by the friendly and always-helpful staff. With a talented team of professionals, including college and former college players, Sea Colony continues to deliver exceptional racquet sports experiences for players of all levels.
Tennis Programs: During the busy summer season, there are daily adult clinics, daily Cardio sessions, and a variety of junior clinics for various ages from Monday through Friday. There are as many as five round robins weekly during the busy summer. At any season the staff is there to help set up games, aided now by the ability of guests and members to sign up online (see Sea Colony Tennis for a detailed overview of all things tennis). And roughly once a month from April to October, some sort of special event—a professional, sanctioned, or social tournament, a visiting pro, or an exhibition—rounds out the program. And during the summer months of June to August there are two or three NIKE adult tennis camps each month (ALERT: these tend to sell out early). Beyond that, Sea Colony offers tailor-made weekend camps for small groups.
On paper, this all appears to be rock-solid choice of tennis options, but what sets them apart is the number of participants. On a day in August when temperatures had soared above 95 degrees, more than 30 adults and juniors turned out for the 10 a.m. intermediate clinic and another 30-plus attended the advanced clinic. I also counted 20 beginners in afternoon junior clinic, which had astutely been scheduled for the indoor courts.
Tennis aside, Sea Colony has also made the move into pickleball with four permanent courts and blended lines on 14 of the tennis courts and an additional 4 permanent courts, a total of 8 with lights. Certified pickleball instructors are available for clinics and private lessons, supplemented by pickleball and hybrid tennis and pickleball camps for adults (including some for advanced pickleball), and NIKE camps for juniors. Instruction aside, Sea Colony stages pickleball clinics, social round robins, and a variety of morning and evening Open Plays sessions for all levels. Court Complex. Although there are four lighted hard courts at the beach, the real tennis action takes place at the main tennis center. It comprises six indoor hard courts with sandwiched between another six outdoor courts and 14 Har-Tru courts. There are and additional four hard courts in the trees across the road, two of those now sporting blended lines to accommodate pickleball. Grand Central Station for tennis is the pro shop on the ground floor of the indoor building. Above it, a long viewing area overlooks the indoor courts and has a bar for use in special events. It opens in back onto a broad deck with a panoramic perspective on the Har-Tru courts, where The Vacasa Pro Women’s Open, a $25K Pro Circuit event, takes place in May. Although the pro shop closes at 7 p.m., those well-lighted indoor courts remain open on a first-come, first-served basis until 10 p.m.
Court fees: None, not even for the indoor courts.
Off Court
Beach: Sea Colony fronts ½ mile of Bethany Beach, a broad boulevard of soft sand washed by the Atlantic Ocean. A free shuttle takes guests from Sea Colony West (where the tennis center is) across Route 1 to the beach.
Fitness Center:Â A short walk from the tennis center is $7.5 million multi-use fitness and aquatic center with indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a snack bar, gymnasium, and a well-equipped workout room. Personal trainers are available as are a variety of classes, including spinning, Zumba (both aquatic and dry land), yoga, Barre toning, and water aerobics.
Bike paths lace Sea Colony West making it easy for kids to get from houses and townhomes there to the tennis courts, fitness center, or marketplace (though to reach the beach they have to cross busy Route 1).
Children's programs: Colony Kids and Club Sea Colony take kids for 2 and 4 hours respectively for a mix of swimming, games, crafts, and other diversions.
Dining: The Marketplace at the entrance to Sea Colony has two restaurants: several restaurants, Fin’s Ale House and Armand’s Pizza among them, but there are numerous other choices within easy driving distance in Bethany and Fenwick Beaches.
Accommodations
Lodging consists of 1-to-5 bedroom condos and houses, some oceanfront, others near the tennis complex. During the summer, one-week bookings are required.
Getting there
Seasons: Year-round thanks to its indoor courts.
Travel Instructions: The nearest major airports are Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI) and Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), each roughly a 2½-hour drive from Bethany Beach. The alternative is to fly into Salisbury Regional Airport (SBY) in Salisbury, MD, which is approximately 45 minutes’ drive south of Bethany Beach.
My whole family ( all 14 of us) LOVE going to Sea Colony!! At Sea Colony Tennis Center, we were treated like a part of their family. The staff are very friendly and helpful all the time. The lessons are tailored to various levels of players. We have a wide range of players of different ages in my family. We were all able to have fun every time we were there. Sea Colony Tennis Center is the place I recommended to so many of my friends and they have been taking their children there for lessons and family vacations. 5 star facility and 5 star service. Oh, one more thing. As a small business owner with many employees and a homeschool mom, I’ve learned so many valuable lessons by watching Thomas Johnston coaching his staff and his students. He is a true servant leader who leads by example.
LP
I loved the mini-camp (3 days, 8 hours of instruction). The instructors offered corrections to various aspects of my game. The clinics also were challenging and fun. I was totally impressed that they remembered our names!
HG
We have visited Sea Colony for several years. Most of our USTA team attends just prior to season starting. It’s the best tune up for a competitive season. The houses are beautiful and we have always enjoyed Bethany Beach restaurants. Of course the tennis facility and coaching have been the best part of the visit.
JM
Awesome tennis resort! We’ve been to many tennis resorts throughout the years, and Sea Colony is by far the best. Great tennis instruction, highly recommend it. We will be going back this year for sure!
PB
The tennis instruction is top notch at Sea Colony. A “hitters” list is kept, so it’s easy to try to find a game. The courts are always well maintained. The facilities are clean. The grounds are “manicured”
GO
tons of well kept courts, both hard and soft. Very responsive stringing, with a really nice clubhouse, and many covered outdoor sitting areas. Six indoor courts, daily drills. Access to other amenities like fitness center and pools if you stay at the facility. Sometime to many people per court during peak times. Hard to get privates at times due to heavy drill schedule
AC
The staff treats everyone lequalky regardless of level; they always take the time to guide you in lessons and where you want to improve. Cardio tennis is one of the best I’ve experienced.
BE
Five Star facility and teaching pro’s for any age and skill level!
JK
Best facilities anywhere.
MW
The instructors were very personable and showed an interest in all levels. They were exceptional in strategy and movement exercises. They did a great job of critiquing, while pointing out strengths as well. The weakness in the whole affair was the composite courts. They were very hard and concrete like but in great shape!
KL
Thomas was a fabulous instructor. Gave us a few things to work on–didn’t overload us with too much information where we were trying to change our entire game. Positive and encouraging attitude. And the clinic was a workout too! Highly recommend doing a team clinic with him!
EW
We had a wonderful clinic last weekend! The pros were fabulous — quickly assessing areas for each of us to focus on and giving us strategies for improving our games. Awesome serving advice! Thanks for everything.
SW
We hosted a USTA Tennis on Campus event here for the first time and the site was spectacular. The courts were great, the proximity of the condo’s was great and the staff was fabulous. I highly encourage you to host your next event here!
EM
Spent two weeks this summer at Sea Colony and found the tennis center to be outstanding. The cardio and other clinics were excellent and instruction a very positive experience. Courts are top notch and the facility is well maintained. If you are vacationing at Sea Colony or in the general area of Bethany Beach, I recommend you check it out. There are no weaknesses !!
DY
They instructors were great and very helpful. They tailored the lessons to our abilities and weaknesses. Would highly recommend!
JG
Strengths: Pleasant staff, Court availability. Weakness: No one responds to the hitters list(those looking for a match)
CP
Great tennis facility in a full-service resort area at the Delaware beaches. Great instruction quality.
EG
Sea colony is a fantastic tennis resort. I have been attending the summer stoke-of-the-day clinics during the summer over the past 5 years. Thomas Johnston does a wonderful job staffing the clinics with superior summer pros and grouping the daily participants into fun cohesive groups (from a mix of sometimes more than 30 players). The daily cardio clinic is fantastic- a great workout and very fun. I have also participated in the tennis camp weekends twice, they do a great job.
SY
My instructors at Sea Colony were exceptional. I had group instruction with 3 other friends. We did one session on doubles strategy/practice, and another session on the modern forehand. I felt like I learned more in those sessions than I’d learned in years of clinics at my home club and other clinics.
JC
I am so impressed with the Sea Colony Tennis Camp. I have stayed at their condos a few times and I always take the group lessons with several of my friends. I continue to pick up new tips on my serve and strokes from the coaches. I love their courts and the setting is beautiful. I highly recommend Sea Colony to tennis enthusiasts! The coaches and facility is top notch! I am returning there in May!!
RK
The facility has recently been upgraded and is excellent. There are indoor and outdoor courts. Great lounge area. The instructors are excellent. Availability is challenging during the season. There are a lot of camps and schools for all ages. My kids really enjoy the facility. We use it year round.
JM
Nothing comes close to the tennis clinic and instruction experience at Sea Colony ! It’s consistently worthwhile and a good investment for your strokes and game !!!
CB
Great vacation area. Great tennis with excellent instructions and clinics. You can play tennis all day with clinics and instruction, can always find someone that is will to play for a game or just to hit, but don’t forgot the amenities of the resort with pools, exercise, and the great beach and shopping. Great place for family. Have to come and see Sea Colony. You will always want to come back for more.
DH
It was great! The pros were excellent. We had an 8 hour camp and we wish it was longer!
TB
The setting is most appropriate for our group who plays indoor tennis throughout the winter months. I really enjoy the facility.
PS
Excellent location with great amenities.
TD
I love having Sea Colony so nearby! They have top notch professional running the camp & the facilities are also beautiful.
RB
I encourage my friends to visit the camp whenever they come to Bethany Beach. Sea Colony provides the best tennis accommodations and players no matter what level of play. My grand daughter has received excellent instructions at 8 years old. I try to attend a clinic or social at least once each year.
AD
Very friendly and technically proficient staff members. Enjoyed the video analysis and doubles tactics training in particular. Facilities are very nice.
JB
Great Tennis and beach vacation with fantastic amenities
HC
My best friend and I took a clinic at Sea Colony last summer and totally enjoyed it. The instructors were friendly and knowledgeable and the class was fast paced and fun. We will be coming back this summer!
PA
This is such a great place for your tennis team to go to enjoy a great weekend of clinics. I went in February and was so impressed with how organized they were and the amount of information that I learned and took home. Just by learning one technique for doubles I have improved my game tremendously. You truly do receive the one on one attention even in a group of 9. Already planning to go back again this year with my team.
FF
Sea Colony is a wonderful place for a family vacation with a rich Tennis program for all ages. It is professional, it is fun and you always want to comeback.
KM
Thomas Johnson is an exceptional instructor and leader of the Sea Colony tennis program. Thomas is available, enthusiastic, a good communicator, and supportive,. His staff demonstrate the same skills, which are the positives we, the students, need to see to have an exceptional experience. Thank you, Thomas, for your hard work and dedication to making Sea Colony an outstanding tennis resort.
CP
Wonderful instruction, friendly staff and learned a lot!
DH
Nice courts and good for kids. I don’t like the fact the only sweep the hartru courts twice a day. You can’t sweep yourself so if your not the first person on they will not be fresh. If you are an advanced tennis player (4.5) you will find a hard time finding a match to your ability. The advance clinics aren’t very advanced. One bad experience I had was while in an advance clinic the pro whacked me in the eye with a tennis ball very hard. Sea Colony didn’t even consider compensating me, not even for that clinic which I felt was pretty poor judgment. While it was an accident it took at least a month (no joke) before my eye to feel right again. We mainly went there for the kids, my son was in the Nike tennis camp. He had a very good time at the camp and his instructor Alex was excellent. Unfortunately I don’t think Alex is there anymore. We are going back this year to give it another try and we will see. Sea Colony is kids friendly, there are plenty of activates for the kids. The price is a little high, if you are willing to travel further distances you can get more for your dollar in South Carolina but if you want to stay local its not bad.
MH
Thomas and his staff are very knowledgeable, professional and fun. I would highly recommend it!
SR
Wonderful pros for all levels High energy and attentive and accommodating One of the best clinics I’ve attended. Can’t think of any weaknesses
ND
Beautiful tennis complex with great passionate tennis instruction.
MG
Excellent daily clinics for all levels conducted by personable and highly qualified instructors. Attractive facility and relaxed and accomodating staff.
DW
My husband and I have taken two vacations at the Sea Colony, primarily for the tennis and wonderful pools and proximity to the ocean. We love the instructors and way they have clinics at different times in the morning. This allows us to trade off being with our son in the morning. The clinics are fun and very helpful. I’ve also visited during the fall with my tennis team and found the clinic incredibly helpful. we’re planning on going back this year again!
MO
Very good instruction that’s both fun and useful. Sessions are packed with helpful tools and techniques. The price is reasonable. Overall good value.

Sea Colony Tennis Center has a great atmosphere that seems to be built upon a sincere love of the game. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. The courts are in great shape and well cared for.

SG
Great classes. Cardio, 3.5 etc
BW
Very well run resort. Amazing pro’s and manager.
LS
The best tennis camp ever, and very affordable. Great coaching and beautiful and numerous courts to play. It is like tennis heaven. The surroundings and new additions to the indoor courts is just amazing. We live here at least 6 months and come often just for my tennis. I play matches almost every day and sometimes 2 times a day. My fave is mixed doubles. We have been here since March. Going home to PA in May..back in May also (the 3rd week).
KR
Extremely knowledgeable instructors, top-notch indoor and outdoor courts, and great location. I enjoy the HD videos they make during tennis clinics which show you exactly where you can improve your server or ground strokes.
CM
A great and friendly place to visit or live! Has so much to do for all ages and a healthy and happy atmosphere:)

Thomas is a great tennis instructor. Most of the other pros are also top notch, but schedule at least one session with Thomas. Facilities are terrific. My tennis team travels there once a year for a weekend of lessons, and we look forward to it every year.
We want to see your racquet sports vacations! When you’re documenting your trip, tag @TennisResortsOnline on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn and use #TROAdventures for a chance to be featured on our page.
