A teacher for 15 years and certified by the USPTA, he’s currently offering daily drills for adults and kids, private lessons, and a weekly round robin and working to put together a list of players available for game matching.
The hotel itself stands out for the number and convenience of its amenities and diversions. Almost everything you could want in a Hawaii vacation is steps from your spacious room, including not only that tennis complex but also a blissful “Spa Without Walls,” whose treatments take place in outdoor thatched huts called hales set in their own private tropical garden. The two lodging wings of the hotel frame a vast free-form pool, which stretches almost to the coast. Families love the small lagoon, protected from the waves by a lava-rock frame and lined with white sand. There is also a watersports center staffed by a crew of beachboys who, among other things, give surfing lessons.
Otherwise the hotel is known for its a Keiki Aloha children’s program (ages 5-12), four restaurants (one a sushi bar), a gourmet deli, four bars and lounges and even a field of ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs left on the ancient lava flows. Travel Instructions: From Kona International Airport, turn left at the stoplight at the airport exit onto Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway 19 and drive north for 19½ miles. Turn left (toward the ocean) at the entrance to Mauna Lani and follow Mauna Lani Drive for about a mile to a roundabout (or traffic circle). Enter the circle and take the first right, which is North Kaniku Drive. Proceed for another mile until you see the entrance to The Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii at the end of the drive.
I squeezed in as much tennis as possible while here for an extended work retreat in Nov. 2019 (pre-pandemic). Booking an instructor was super easy as the tennis shop is expertly run. Instruction was very good and I definitely got a lot of 1:1 time with the coach. I had one match with another tennis player there mainly for golf but since he packed his racquet he was ready. The courts are very well maintained, but there wasn’t a lot of tennis going on.

We ususually play here at the Orchid and at Mauna Kea Resort. The Orchid is my second choice to play. They have alot of courts and there is lots of availability. One thing though the courts a very dirty. The balls are black in about 10 minutes. But it is a beautiful spot and the resort is really nice.

This is a terrific resort to enjoy both the natural world and tennis. The morning clinics were great, with a nice mix of drills and live ball /match emulation. The instruction was clear and concise. The pro, Ron, focused on only a few tips at a time- and each one improved my game. The private lessons were equally awesome. My children, also loved the instruction and they have different levels of proficiency. There are at east nine courts so it was relatively easy to fine a court in the shade and while well used we never had difficulty finding a court.

I attended two tennis clinics while at the Fairmont. The instruction was good for the people that attended both days. I wish there were more tennis strategies, drills and more instructions and tips for each individuals that were playing. Seems like the instructions were meant for every participants and were not individualize. Need more ball feed and court play. Perhaps indicate level of the clinic. It will help with the different drills and type of play. I was with an individual who was just starting which made it frustrating for me. Overall it was still fun.

My husband and I have been coming to this beautiful island for a few years. What we love about it is that we can play tennis everyday of the week no matter where we stay at. We are staying at the Mauna Lani Resort this year and because of a friend’s suggestion got a membership at the Fairmont Tennis Club. The shop is willing to set up games for us with other guests/players as well. Three of the courts have night time lights and even if the shop is closed, the staff offer cards for us to turn on the lights, at our own leisure, for cooler evening play. My only suggestion would be a small venue to purchase fresh juices or smoothies to enjoy at their lovely tables after play.

I was surprised at the number of courts and how well-kept they are for a non-tennis resort. I never had trouble getting a court, and I did a drill class, rented the ball machine for practice and played with my daughter and son a few times. The staff can even find you a partner at your level either finding a guest or a local. Some of the locals come to play at this facility. It is beautiful, with some shade on some courts, gorgeous trees and fauna surrounding it, and water and towels provided on every court. Can’t say enough about a great tennis experience during my family vacation.

The courts are set in a matured landscape with shade and lots of flowering plants. The daily “clinic” at 0900 offers a chance to meet new folks and warm up. The facility was very gracious to host our Stafford HIlls Club for 5 days of tennis. The Fairmont is quite nice and staying within walking distance to the courts was great. Although the Fairmont is an upscale resort, the tennis facility is very-laid back and welcoming. And the instructors’ number one priority is improving your tennis and enjoyment of the game! My teenage daughter had a private lesson with Liane. She plays on the high team and I am a 4.0 player. I couldn’t play because I am injured but watched the lesson. I was so jealous. Amazing experience! The resort itself is so nice, it was exactly what I was looking for, one of the most relaxing I have stayed at on Hawaii and the location was very nice. The tennis instructor was very knowledgeable, she knew what she was talking about and she made the lesson easy to understand and helped improve my stroke and my grasp of tennis. Her name was Liane. My sister and I took two lessons with Jon, the head pro, at the Fairmont Orchid. I had not played in over a decade and Jon made re-entry into tennis easy and fun. The staff at the front desk lent me some great racquets and we had a blast with Jon. He was sensitive to the heat and made sure we were having fun and not taking it too seriously. My only regret is that we didn’t get to play with Jon more. The courts were beautiful and the setting was lush.

My sister and I took two lessons with Jon, the head pro, at the Fairmont Orchid. I had not played in over a decade and Jon made re-entry into tennis easy and fun. The staff at the front desk lent me some great racquets and we had a blast with Jon. He was sensitive to the heat and made sure we were having fun and not taking it too seriously. My only regret is that we didn’t get to play with Jon more. The courts were beautiful and the setting was lush.
This is the second time around for our family and our 3 kids couldn’t wait for their lessons from John Griesser. John’s passion and love of the game are infectious. John, keep up the good work and we look forward to learning more from you next February.

If only one or two people show up for the daily clinic, then you get a private or semi-private lesson at no extra cost.Best court rates:$30 per hour per court not $30 per person! Focus is on fun and positive reinforcement. Significantly improved my forehand – forever! Best tennis vacation ever! We did not stay at the Orchid but it is a beautiful Hotel on the ocean.
