The 410-acre The Resort at Longboat Key Club straddles the southern tip of a long, narrow barrier island opposite Sarasota. It consists of two developments: Islandside, which borders the beach and Gulf of Mexico, and Harbourside, a primarily residential enclave, which faces Sarasota Bay.
Hotel guests bed down in the 226 rooms and suites in a cluster of mid rise towers just behind the beach on Islandside, where there are eight Har-Tru courts, a spa, fitness center, and 18 of the resort’s 45 golf holes. However, the focal point of the resort’s tennis activity can be found at the $4.5 million Tennis Gardens, three miles away along Sarasota Bay in Harbourside. This handsomely designed facility has 20 Har-Tru courts, one of which is a stadium with seating for 500 spectators, as well as a full service pro shop and an outdoor players’ lounge. The USTA named it Facility of the Year when it opened in 2009, and for several years it served as the host site for the Sarasota Open, a men’s professional tournament.
Briana Harris Francois had a history with the Tennis Gardens even before taking over as tennis director. Previously, she directed the club’s summer camps while also teaching adults as a member of the professional staff. Born in Ohio, she took up tennis at age 13 and showed so much talent she earned a scholarship to train at IMG Academy in Bradenton and another to attend Ohio State University. She left in her junior year to compete on the WTA satellite tour and then returned to Ohio State to finish her degree. A series of coaching opportunities followed, which eventually led her and her husband to move to Sarasota and an opportunity to direct the junior program at Celsius Tennis Academy and then summers at the Resort at Longboat Key Club. She also established her own B. Harris Kids, a free youth tennis and tutoring program for needs-based and at-risk kids in the community of Sarasota.
Tennis Programs: Like Palm Beach, Sarasota has a social season from November to April when seasonal residents return and activity on the courts intensifies. During that period, having the eight additional courts at Islandside helps meet demand for the desirable morning time slots. To help shift that demand, the club began offering more programs in the afternoons, in the way of Cardio tennis, singles strategy, doubles strategy, and live-ball drills.
Activities like those allow people to just drop in. But LBK’s success can also be traced to the changing demographics, with younger members playing afternoons while their kids are in school And because there are kids, the resort also stages junior clinics during the summer and major holidays.
Among the staff is Sammy Aviles, a near legend on Longboat Key for his years with the Bollettieri tennis academy and then the now sadly shuttered Colony Beach & Tennis Club.
Court Complex: There are 20 Har-Tru courts at Harbourside Tennis Gardens and another eight at Islandside.
Court fees: None for hotel guests
Off Court
Beach: The resort lies near the southern end of the 14-mile-long white-sand beach that lines the Gulf of Mexico coast of the island of Longboat Key. The dunes remain intact at this end, so to reach the beach you use any of several walkways. Once there you’ll find beach watercraft, lounge chairs, umbrellas, and cabanas.
Golf Courses: The resort has 45 holes of golf.
Links on Longboat Course: Water hazards come into play on all 18 holes of this 6,748-yard, Par 71 course laid out along the Gulf of Mexico. Pink and white oleander and more than 5,000 palm trees line the fairways, which trail through a bird sanctuary. Harbourside Course: Willard Byrd of Atlanta originally designed the three nine-hole courses—Red Hawk at 3,314 yards, White at 3,342 yards, and the Blue Heron at 3,314 yards—that make up Harbourside. These were later reconfigured by designer Ron Garl, who added more contour and elevation and improved the putting surfaces. Situated on the Sarasota Bay side of the island, these 27 holes trail through stands of live oak, sabal palms, palmetto, and southern pine. Playing here is a different experience from Islandside, at once more open and more trap riddled.
Spa & Fitness Center: The 4,000-square-foot Fitness Centre stands just a short stroll from the Islandside lodging at one end of the building containing the golf pro shop and Spike’n Tees open-air restaurant overlooking Islandside’s Links on Longboat course. The fitness center consists of an aerobics room with windows on three sides and a mirror on other and views of the Islandside golf course. There are three adjoining rooms offering high-tech cardio equipment, free-weights, and strength training equipment.
There is a beachfront swimming pool at the Resort Center, where they occasionally screen movies outdoors. There is also a 291-slip marina on Sarasota Bay in the Harbourside development.
Dining: Several dining options are available ranging from formal to poolside casual. At The Resort you will find Sands Pointe, which merges Florida, Mediterranean, and European culinary traditions (e.g., pan-seared black grouper, veal chop with mushroom sauce, Kansas City strip loin) from its perch overlooking the pool and beach. There is also poolside and beachside service from Barefoot’s Bar & Grille, and Spike ‘n Tees, which overlooks the Islandside Links on Longboat golf course serves breakfast, lunch, and fresh fruit smoothies. Within Harbourside, the choices are Portofino Ristorante and Bar for northern Italian cuisine overlooking the marina and The Tavern & Whiskey Bar in the Harbourside golf clubhouse for farm-to-table fare.
Accommodations
The resort lodging consists of a cluster of seven white concrete towers rising from four to 10 stories and constructed in a halo around the Resort Center just behind the dunes lining the Gulf of Mexico beach. Their unprepossessing appearance is deceptive: The rooms themselves turn out to be very spacious—none smaller than a suite—with broad deep balconies or terraces and handsome interiors. The best have views of the beach; the rest overlook the lagoon or golf course. All have full kitchens, washer-dryers, and wired and wireless Internet access.
Getting there
Seasons: Year-round, however busiest from November into April.
Travel Instructions: The nearest airport is Sarasota Bradenton International (SRQ), which is 9 miles away and accessible on several national and commuter airlines as well as Canadian Airlines. The alternative is to fly into Tampa International Airport (TPA), 72 miles to the north. Rental cars and shuttles are available at both airports.
We have just returned from The Resort at Longboat and I can’t commend it high enough! As a family of 4 who all love tennis, we were not disappointed in anyway. The staff are exceptional and sorted with Jon a 2:1 with our children as there was no ‘kids camp’ that particular week. Randy was an exceptional coach our kid adored him 🙂 and so were Sammy/Mirage & Ken. A particular highlight was with Jackie who ran the ‘live ball’ session, ‘wow!’ a fanastic energetic well thought out hour & a half of great tennis! I have to say the pro-shop was just the most amazing well stocked shop I have been to – I was like a kid in a sweet shop??we had to buy another suitcase to fit my purchases in – Jackie the lady who orders the tennis outfits has exquisite taste. I must also mention the wonderful attentive ladies in the pro-shop, Sandy, Sandra & Polly, you are all wonderful ladies, thank you for making our stay so amazing.
AC
Tennis Pro Shop has an extensive variety of tennis apparel and gear for men, women and children. The service was wonderful, personal and attentive! The coaching staff were friendly and very experienced. Took a clinic and private lesson from Ken Howard and I learned so much in such a short period of time. Had my racquet restrung in less than 12 hours based upon my playing needs. They even arranged for a match opportunities during our stay. The facilities are beautifully maintained and the staff are friendly, helpful and accommodating. What a wonderful weekend we enjoyed at the Longboat Key Club! We’ll definitely return!
BI
Beautiful surroundings. Instructor at clinic a little too basic for higher levels, but always come away with some tips long forgotten
SB
Fantastic facilities with top notch instruction and clinics. Jackie was particularly good and runs a high intensity clinic that is a lot of fun.
JP
I traveled to Longboat Key Resort with tennis and relaxation on my mind and I was not disappointed. We signed up for the daily clinic and also took a private with Sammy. His knowledge of the game is unsurpassed and he explained things in a way that made sense for me. He did not try to change my game, but made a few minor adjustments that will make a big difference in my technical abilities, doubles strategy, shot selection, and mindset. The tennis gardens are beautiful. They are located about 3 miles from the resort so you will need to grab a shuttle or rent a car. There was absolutely no traffic or crowded beaches while we were there in June. The resort is a little dated, but it is very clean, the staff is friendly and helpful, and the beaches are gorgeous. You can find packages that include beach chairs and a resort credit or possibly find a USTA discount. I’m already planning to bring my team here for a girls’/tennis trip!
WV
Match arranging and private tennis lessons were fantastic.
KC
My husband and I visit the resort at least three times a year and we’re convinced they have the best amenities. The clinics are thorough and helpful for what your needs are. They pair you with same strengths and handicap that good practice and games are challenging and rewarding. Never leave with visiting the ProShop. Helpful staff!
JF
The pro shop staff is exceptional!!! The choice of tennis clothes are unbelievable!! I can text the pros upon my arrival and they schedule my lessons and times to play. The entire staff makes you feel welcomed!!!! My only regret is that I wish I could stay longer!!
BM
Fabulous Tennis setting with awesome pros. Longboat Key is the best!

Great resort and Great tennis. Har-tru court are immaculate. Ken Howard arranges matches and hitting. Ken is great instructor with great insights as to how to improve your game and strategies. Best hour lesson I ever had. Gary Hurewitz

Great!

The Tennis Gardens are beautifully maintained and very busy all day, every day! The Staff in the Pro Shop are extremely helpful in setting up matches for you if you’re interested, as well as booking your court time, helping you find the right size among the AMAZING collection of tennis attire, and even about suggestions for fun beach walks or a good lunch out. They try very hard to get you on the court when you want to be on the court, and they go to great lengths to make sure you are happy.
PB
Longboat Key offers beautiful weather and a beautiful facility close to the beach. The green clay courts are immaculate and the clubhouse is beautiful. The staff is eager to assist with game matching. Unfortunately, the Sarasota area is more of a retirement community, and finding high level players for clinics and match play may be a challenge.

We have been going to Longboat Key Club and Resort for the past 5 to 6 years, every year, 2 to 3 times a year. It is most wonderful and very relaxing to just get away. I smile when I hear my kids at home planning their activities for their vacation at LKB, swimming, playing in the sand, tennis, fishing & shopping. The staff know us and really take care of us. Thank you very much to Miss Jackie for your fun sunny tennis. LBK is becoming our home away from home. I really want to Make Longboat Key Club & Resort Great Again!!!
BL
This is a wonderful gem for the tennis player and fan to enjoy and relax. Very professional facilities and wonderful restaurants. My family had lots of fun playing tennis and going fishing. We met a friendly professional tennis instructor Jackie B and my kids love hitting the fuzzy yellow balls. We will be back.

The “Tennis Gardens” at the Longboat Key Club offers 20 beautiful, well-kept har-tru courts. Amazing teaching staff and clinics! Pro shop well stocked with lots of great clothing and equipment choices. Super friendly staff. A great place to meet other friendly and welcoming players. In spite of having a lovely court-side lounge, the Tennis Gardens has very limited food service. However, there are excellent dining options at the golf course (next door) and the resort hotel.
RD
The Tennis Gardens at Longboat Key Club are beautiful. The staff at the pro shop was very friendly and helpful. My husband and I enjoyed great tennis every day on our vacation. The staff set up matches with vacationers staying at the resort and also residents who are members of the club. Even when there were last-minute cancellations or someone did not show up for a game, Ken managed to wrangle up people so that we did not miss any of our tennis matches that were scheduled. I would definitely return to the resort. We had a wonderful time.

This resort is lovely. From the beach views to the tennis center, to the easy access to all the culture and dining in Sarasota. The resort units are modern and so well kept. We were happy adult “campers”.

The staff at the hotel at Longboat Key Club and the Tennis Gardens were extremely accommodating, fun, interesting and interested in my vacation. Arrangements were made easily and the staff exceeded my expectations with kindness, interactions and always made every request possible thru out the stay. Thank you.

The Tennis Gardens at Longboat Key Resort is amazing! The courts are always in perfect condition, the staff is superb, and the weather perfect! This is the third year in a row that my wife and I have stayed at the resort, and every year we love it even more! The staff arranges competitive (and fun) matches for all players. This is, by far, the best tennis program at at resort!

My husband and I have been going to the Longboat Key Club every year for the past 6 years, primarily for the fabulous tennis facilities and instruction there. My husband is a 4.0-4.5 player. He enjoys the games with the players he is matched with there and relishes the privates he takes with the top tennis pros to get some kinks out of his game. I just started playing as an older adult. The pros at Longboat are superb and have become my friends over the years. I generally take a private every day and join the 1 hour clinic, which is always useful and fun. Some resorts we’ve visited have 3 hour clinics, which is far too long for me. Besides, Longboat Key is adjacent to Sarasota, which features fabulous restaurants, movie theaters, live theatrical events, and more. The club has a great pool and is right on the beach, so we often take long beach walks in the afternoons. All in all, this is our favorite place to visit, to play tennis, and to learn the game.
PG
Incredibly beautiful and well maintained Courts. Staff is very competent and welcoming. Membership is not inexpensive but staying at the resort gets you full privileges. Match arrangements are excellent. Certainly the best tennis resort we’ve stayed at.
SM
Great tennis program. Lots of courts. Very good instruction

Jackie was wonderful!!! Great pro in clinic and private setting!!! Excellent facility and staff…the best I have seen!

My recent holiday stay at the Longboat key club was fantastic. The desk staff at the Tennis Gardens (Susan, Sandy and Polly) did a great job putting together matches and slotting me into daily clinics and live ball sessions. The pro staff (Randy, Ron, Maraj, Scott and Jackie) did a wonderful job creating a fun, learning environment while challenging all abilities in the clinics. On top of it all I got a great deal thru the USTA discount program they have. The only weakness is I had to return home to northern new England to play indoors.
RG
The pro shop staff was extremely nice and went out of their way to set up matches for us during our stay. The facilities were very great. The courts were in fabulous shape, and the weather was perfect, which made for a magnificent first anniversary trip. For private lessons, request Sammy.

Great facilities. Fantastic coaches. Helpful staff especially Susan in the tennis shop.
KP
Excellent tennis facility. The courts are well maintained and the staff is very friendly. I especially recommend tennis pro Prakash Maraj who is a wonderful, enthusiastic teacher. His “Family Secrets” were very helpful in improving my game. He was able to see what I needed and guided me to become a better tennis player.

Fabulous 3 days at the resort at LBK with girlfriends for a birthday party. Loads of tennis, spa, beach and lots of laughs. The tennis facilities at LBK Club are unrivaled. Beautiful setting on a lake, meticulously maintained, just fabulous. The pros were excellent and the tennis concierge, Zo, was a 10! Can’t wait to go back. Pro shop was full of beautiful tennis clothes and shoes, love it all!
JR
I just returned from a 3 day girls tennis trip to LBK. The resort is fabulous, right on the ocean, 5 star service and amenities. The tennis facility if possible is even better! They have a concierge, Zo, who is so accommodating. We only had 6 girls for our last day, and she offered to play with us and get an 8th person. Went way out of her way to make our trip extra special. The pros were great, the entire experience was 5 STARS!! Love LBK resort!
TG
I had a great stay at the resort and Zo, the concierge for tennis hooked me up with great matches and pick up play over the weekend. Susan was in the pro shop was great as well. Courts were emacs late and pros were very experienced. Thanks for a great time! I’ll be sore for days:)

My stay at the resort at Longboat Key Club was exceptional. It emcompassed a private beach with white sand and clear water, a great pool, spacious room with fully equipped kitchenette and laundry, and housekeeping who cleaned the rooms twice a day, as well as other amenities and facilities. A variety of great restaurants were located in close proximity (1-3 miles). The Tennis Gardens at Longboat Key Club really made my stay even more special. The Staff were friendly, professional, and flexible. The courts were in top conditions. I enrolled in two tennis clinics with Jackie, a tennis pro, who really pushed me to play with intensity and kept me motivated. I also took 1 hour private lesson with Sammy who gave me lots of feedback and invaluable advice on how to become a better player. Lastly, I would like to thank Zo, the tennis concierge at The Tennis Gardens for pairing me up with other players for singles and doubles matches, as well as for being so attentive and providing great service which really made me feel welcomed and at home. I will definitely be back!

I wanted to give a special shout out to John Woods, Director of Tennis at The Longboat Key Resort, and his staff for making my vacation a truly memorable one. John is a Texas native, a Texas Tech alum and brother of former UT women’s coach Dave Woods. And after hitting with me all week, he invited me to play in a Friday happy hour exhibition for resort guests and club members along with a couple of 5.0+ ringers. But going the extra mile seems to be par for the course at the LBK Resort. In past visits, Woods’ staff has made extra efforts to find competitive matches for me, even during the slowest time of year. From the stunning clubhouse to the 20 pristine Hydrogrid Har-Tru courts to the lush tropical surroundings, this place is about as close to tennis paradise as you’re going to find. If you’re looking to combine a five-star tennis experience with one of the very best beaches in the continental U.S., then you can’t go wrong with Longboat Key.
RG
Great environment. Arranged competitive matched for my wife & me. Very friendly & accommodating. Will return.
MO
Matching service is the best.
GB
Strengths: Finding matches for guests. Zo did a great job; courts in great condition; nice cafe at tennis club. No weaknesses.
PW
A really excellent tennis destination. Susan was great at booking courts and getting my racquets restrung on time. Zoe was able to book me for doubles each day and joined us to play on our last day. A really beautiful facility, great food. Golf course was exceptionally well manicured. Excellent, well maintained clay courts. This was my third visit and I plan to keep coming back!
LG
the instructors (particularly Miraj) were great!!! beautiful facility, I’d definitely go back!
WW
Beautiful Facility – Friendly People – Good Pros No real weaknesses
AL
Great experience
MD
Fantastic tennis facility. We stayed at the Resort for a week and thoroughly enjoyed the tennis. Very friendly staff that go out of their way to make sure your tennis needs are met. Special shout-out to Susan who was very helpful. Complimentary demo rackets. Complimentary use of ball machine. Lots of tennis pros that you can book lessons with. Lots of clinics, etc. They will also find you a player at your level though I did not use that service.
JW
Beautiful facility. Courts in excellent condition. Court location is in a quiet area away from any roads or noise. Very pleasant playing conditions. Multiple pros an site. Large pro shop with great selection and very friendly staff. The staff arranged match play for my wife and I. The only weakness we found was the 3 mile distance from the main resort facility to the tennis gardens. A beautiful and short drive though in an elegant area of Longboat Key, FL. The resort offers a free shuttle but we used our rental car instead. Courts were also available on site at the resort but we did not play there. We thought the short drive to the tennis gardens was worth the drive. The resort had a USTA package which we chose. Included free breakfast for the two of us, free court time and a $25 credit at the pro shop which my wife took advantage of and returned home with a new tennis outfit! We were treated very well there. Had a great trip.
KR
A delightful holiday in everyway. We had a spectacular room which was incredibly spacious and with the most wonderful view of the Gulf. The highlight of our trip was our time at the tennis gardens. Jackie is a superb instructor who clearly wants you to be the best you can possibly be. Her approach, her drills, her demeanor, her focus and commitment are unsurpassed. She is the reason we return to Longboat. This is the perfect holiday for us and we are already planning our next visit.
MW
I love the tennis gardens at Longboat Key, and have gone there twice in the last 6 months. Everyone is so friendly; in particular the pros! My favorite pro is Jackie Bohannon, and she is the reason I went there the first time, and the main reason I go back. Jackie is a phenomenal coach; giving constant feedback, being encouraging, really knowing the game as well as equipment, making each player feel that she genuinely wants you to improve and believes you can,… Thank you Jackie, and all the staff at LBK; I’ll definitely be back!
DW
Super Friendly and Welcoming Club ! As a Guest sometimes an open environment is tricky but that was not the case on our first visit. We were invited to all functions and we were able to play Tennis twice daily and more if we accepted the inventions. 5 Star Resort because of the People, Accessibility to Member’s Activities and Facilities. Over All Service was well above our Expectations!
HH
Courteous: will always find you a match or just a cout.
RR
Best tennis club I have ever known, Zoe the concierge and John the head pro are top notch. I highly recommend to all my friends, and have been coming here for many years.
JD
One of our favourite tennis resorts! Great facilities, great staff, great tennis!
AT
Beautiful, well-groomed tennis facility. Excellent pro staff, including Sammy Aviles who has the ability to inspire change, improve technique and instill new match strategies. The resort location on the white sand beach on the Gulf of Mexico is beautiful, although the lobby is small and dated, and the 10-minute ride between the resort and Tennis Gardens facility isn’t the most convenient. On balance, though, the beach location, excellent tennis instruction, clinics and friendly vibe carry the resort to the top of my list!
We want to see your racquet sports vacations! When you’re documenting your trip, tag @TennisResortsOnline on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn and use #TROAdventures for a chance to be featured on our page.

Great environment. Arranged competitive matched for my wife & me. Very friendly & accommodating. Will return.
Matching service is the best.
Strengths: Finding matches for guests. Zo did a great job; courts in great condition; nice cafe at tennis club. No weaknesses.
This was my third visit and I plan to keep coming back!
the instructors (particularly Miraj) were great!!! beautiful facility, I’d definitely go back!
Beautiful Facility – Friendly People – Good Pros No real weaknesses
Great experience
Fantastic tennis facility. We stayed at the Resort for a week and thoroughly enjoyed the tennis. Very friendly staff that go out of their way to make sure your tennis needs are met. Special shout-out to Susan who was very helpful. Complimentary demo rackets. Complimentary use of ball machine. Lots of tennis pros that you can book lessons with. Lots of clinics, etc. They will also find you a player at your level though I did not use that service.
Courteous: will always find you a match or just a cout.
Best tennis club I have ever known, Zoe the concierge and John the head pro are top notch. I highly recommend to all my friends, and have been coming here for many years.
One of our favourite tennis resorts! Great facilities, great staff, great tennis!
