Wintergreen spills down the slopes of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains roughly 45 miles west of Charlottesville. A master-planned private resort, it begins 3,800 feet above sea level at Devils Knob, where it overlooks the Shenandoah Valley, and ends in the valley of the Rockfish River. Altogether it covers 11,000 acres, 60 percent of which remains forested in evergreens, towering oaks, and other hardwoods. The forest also hold 13 species of orchids and one ancient fern bed estimated to be 1,000 years old. Some 30 miles of marked hiking trails thread through the property, with connections to one of the most scenic stretches of the Appalachian Trail.
Ecologically sensitive, Wintergreen has long followed a philosophy of preserving as much of the natural environment as possible while still carving out space for homes, condos, golf courses, tennis courts, and ski runs. Concentrating the lodging along the ridge tops at Devils Knob meant they could leave substantial tracts of forest undisturbed, and the construction that did take place adopted the colors of the earth, rocks, and trees in order to blend with the surroundings. There are thousands of condos and homes scattered through the property, but their very unobtrusiveness would lead you to guess far fewer. Deed covenants ensure that that will never change, and so does the fact that the resort is owned not by a corporation but by the property owners themselves, who don’t want to see the value of their investments undermined by the continual addition of new housing stock.
Its physical beauty aside, one reason to choose Wintergreen, especially in the summer, is that temperatures at Devils Knob are typically 10 to 15 degrees cooler than those in the surrounding lowlands. Many of the second home owners come from Washington, D.C., Richmond, and other nearby cities seeking relief from the summer swelter. And it’s no accident, therefore, that the largest of the resort’s tennis complexes drapes across a ridge at the top of the mountains.
There are two tennis complexes at Wintergreen: a small four-court (all clay) facility at Stoney Creek next to the golf clubhouse and the main 18-court complex at Devils Knob. The latter consists of 15 clay courts laid out among the evergreens and hardwoods near the top of a ridge and three hard courts beneath a tent-like pavilion. Devils Knob has a full-service pro shop, and its location puts it just down the road from the Wintergreen Spa and Aquatics & Fitness Center. (Wintergreen also owns the one hard court and pool at Rodes Farm, down in the valley, an otherwise independently managed inn and restaurant with cabins and stables.)
There's a daily roster of activities as well as an adult academy program and summer junior camps. Among the latter are 5 Nike Tennis Camps, some with an overnight option and/or tournament training option to cater to higher level players. The result is that from the time the snow melts in March or April until beyond the fall foliage season in October, these courts are a haven for avid players.
Tennis Programs: The Tennis Academy programs at Wintergreen run three or four days, some midweek, others over weekends. These run year round on the weekends, supplemented by midweek options on certain dates from June through August. In addition, private groups can book customized programs midweek from September through May. Sessions average 2 to 4 hours a day and include intensive drilling and supervised match play, much of it doubles.
The Academy aside, the resort offers a full menu of clinics such as the Advanced Workout for 4.0’s and up, Cardio Tennis, Drills for Skills, and a tactical point playing clinic called Matchplay Madness. Beyond that there are private lessons, game matching, and occasional exhibitions.
Courts Fees: Outdoors: $22/hour midweek; $26/hour weekends and holidays.
Indoors: $35/hour midweek; $45/hour weekends and holidays
Off Court
Golf Courses: Wintergreen has two distinctively different golf courses: one at the top of the mountains at Devils Knob, the other in the valley below along Stoney Creek. It also has a golf academy.
Devils Knob Course: Designed by Ellis Maples, a native of Pinehurst, North Carolina, this challenging 18-hole course follows the surprisingly flat ridges at the top of the mountain. At 3,850 feet it is the highest in the state, with 40 to 50 miles views of the Shenandoah and Rockfish Valleys. That elevation means summer temperatures are cooler than in the valley below but also limit its season to April through November. Par: 70. Length: 5,101-6,300 yards.
Stoney Creek Course: Unlike Devils knob, which is seasonal, this 27-hole championship course remains open year-round. Rees Jones designed the original 18 holes (the Monocan and Shamokin nines), giving them roomy fairways that meander along the valley floor and feature bold mounding like that found on many British courses. He returned 10 years later to add the Tuckahoe 9, which opened in 1998. He laid it out over the hills and through woods, skirting meadows and preserved wetlands. Water hazards are plentiful and so are his trademark moundings. Par: 72. Length: 5,500-7,005 yards.
Spa & Fitness Center: The Wintergarden Spa and Fitness Center stands just up the road from the Devils Knob tennis center. It has indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a sauna, a workout room with windows on the indoor pool, and a spa with 11 rooms for massages and beauty treatments. There is another small fitness center and pool at the golf clubhouse adjacent to the four clay courts in the valley at Stoney Creek.
Out of Bounds Adventure Center: Relocated to Discovery Ridge, the Out of Bounds Adventure Center is a multi-use recreation site with a 25-foot rock-climbing tower, a bungee-trampoline, paintball team competitions and target shooting, a miniature golf course landscaped with hardwood trees and shrubs, a skate park,
Some 30 miles of nature trails wind through the resort, connecting at the top with the Appalachian Trail. Mountain bikes can be rented at the Adventure Center for the 7.2 mile descent to the valley floor or to take on the challenge of the obstacles at the free-ride center. Down in the valley, there is a 20-acre Lake Monocan stocked with bass and pan fish. The lake also has a dock with canoes and paddleboats, picnic areas, volleyball, and a beach of sorts. Rodes Farm at Stoney Creek, while independent of the resort, has a complete English-oriented equestrian center.
Children's programs: The resort runs highly regarded adventurous summer children’s programs for those ages 2½ to 14. During the height of summer, there is also the option for 6 to 12 year olds of a Friday and Saturday evening program in summer so parents can have their own weekend evening out and a midweek overnight campout.
Dining: There are four restaurants at Wintergreen, three at the top of the mountain, a fourth at the golf clubhouse in Stoney Creek.
Accommodations
Getting there
Seasons: That elevation means that temperatures at the main Devils Knob tennis courts are typically 10 to 15 degrees cooler than on the valley floor below, and that helps to make Wintergreen a popular summer weekend getaway for lowlanders in places like Washington, DC, and eastern Virginia. Spring and early summer bring a spectacular display of wildflowers, autumn a blaze of fall colors.
Travel Instructions: By Air: The Charlottesville/Albemarle Airport (CHO) is 44 miles from Wintergreen.

Beautiful place to enjoy many activities as well as relaxation!

Our kids have loved attending tennis clinics and private lessons at Wintergreen. The pro’s have worked with them on fundamentals at the appropriate level and made it fun for them. My wife and I have also attended tennis clinics and private lessons and found the pro’s to be knowledgable and friendly. We would consider spending more time at Wintergreen generally, and playing tennis there specifically, if they made two improvements: First, if they created a more social atmosphere based on a reliable calendar of events (ex. Cardio Tennis every Saturday at 10am, 105 every Sunday at 2pm, Beginner Tennis every Monday at 4pm etc.) and Secondly, if they published the calendar in an easy to find place on the website and in regular emails. Currently, it feels like tennis is ad hoc and hard to find or register for on the website, but pickleball is more prominently displayed. Our family has had a membership for over a decade and it still takes an act of Congress to figure out what tennis activities will be offered on the weekends we are planning to visit. How hard would it be to set up an “On the Mountain This Week” form on the website where members could list their name, phone number and level of play then other members / guests could message them to set up a match?

Was hoping for something like league tennis to help find opportunities to play more.

You can not play summer Pickleball anywhere nicer …beautiful new courts and cool mountain air. Best time of year to enjoy the sport!! Here during the winter or colder temps? The indoor courts can curb your Pickleball fix… Don’t know how to play? Want to learn better techniques? You will not find better instruction than lessons with Colleen. She is fabulous in so many ways…but for me…she has been able to help me understand the game and has taught me easy ways to remember the instruction. Can not imagine a better teacher for a beginner or advanced player. Purchasing a pack of lessons is the way to go if you are spending more than a weekend on the mountain. Highly , highly recommend her instruction.

I have been playing pickleball for five years and it wasn’t until I started taking lessons from the Wintergreen pro team that my game really started to improve. Maybe that’s on me :(, but I cannot speak more highly about their approach and ability to teach. The facility is top notch with six new designated pickleball courts in the most beautiful setting in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Layer play with a visit to their amazing spa – pure bliss.
SS
An amazing tennis experience! Both Steve (Director) and Colleen (Head Coach) were very welcoming and exceptional teachers. The facility is outstanding ! A must visit for tennis enthusiasts year round.
KE
My high school aged daughter who plays varsity tennis in Southern California took three private lessons with Colleen. Colleen is an amazing coach! She is very knowledgeable and her instruction technical. At the same time her lessons are dynamic and focused on reinforcing correct form. We hope to work with her again on our trip to Wintergreen next year.

We created a four day clinic for my wife and me with Colleen Campbell’s leadership. As 65+ 3.5-4.0 players, we wanted and received high energy and exceptional quality tennis instruction. She quickly began to examine and analyze our strokes and game personalities. Both of us take clinics and semi-individual lesson multiple times a month… okay, multiple weekly. The fantastic thing about Colleen’s insight, she spotted and began helping us work on several small yet important hitches and other items where “laziness and familiarity” had allowed to enter our games. We came away from the four day clinic excited about the new/ old items that were brought to our attention. We have gone home with some fantastic adjustments that should prove big dividends as we play back home and around our state & region. My wife is already talking with some of her USTA teammates and other tennis friends about scheduling another clinic with Colleen. My wife and I retired with the desire to play tennis as our #1 outlet. We have friends in their late 80’s-90’s playing highly competitive tennis… they are our role models. Colleen recognized and encouraged us both to find ways to build up, strengthen, stretch, and help our bodies recover with those goals in mind. The biggest weakness in this self-created clinic was we only gave her four days to work her magic. It was a fantastic experience. Looking forward to doing this again in the near future.

We will definitely be back. The tennis courts are superbly maintained. The tennis instructors are enthusiastic and make every drlll challenging. The setting is absolutely gorgeous and in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Wintergreen is well known for skiing but the tennis really shines. It is a hidden gem and we know because we’ve played all over including Europe but never realized a comparable facility was within driving distance!

Strengths: Everyone were very friendly and engaging with guest. I had the opportunity to work with the tennis pro. She did not try to change my game, but game me excellent tips to make it better. I used them today in my match (6/10/22). The view was breath taking. I can’t wait to go back
ND
Excellent experience! From the group lessons to the private lesson the the tennis staff was so informative and helpful with my overall game. Ethan in particular helped me so much better understand the equipment I am using and found me the right type of string to be hitting with. Something I rarely used to think about before picking up my racquet
JF
My tennis experience at Wintergreen has been exceptional. I have participated in many academies and taken quite a few lessons. The instructors/pros are quick to interpret what I need to work on. They keep lessons and group play engaging and fast paced. I highly recommend any time spent in the court with one of their wonderful pros. Worth every penny and a whole lot of fun!

Tennis academies and staff are awesome!

Excellent instruction from professional experts.
GM
Had a wonderful 2-day group instruction experience at the Wintergreen Tennis Academy. The coaches were lively, highly experienced and knowledgeable, easy to work with. I learned a lot. They were committed to getting through all the basics and more and I’m sure my game will improve. The facility is top-notch as is the whole Wintergreen Resort area. Instructions on some of the drills were confusing. I would have enjoyed a little more direct feedback on my play and doubles strategy while we were playing.

Best place on earth!

I live full time at wintergreen so is hard to respond to these questions. It’s a great resort or I would not have chosen to retire here. Good golf and racquet sports, hiking and skiing

For our short retreat, we were specifically looking for a resort that had indoor Pickleball. Bonus is that it was in the mountains. We had private Pickleball lessons with Colleen and were very pleased with her instruction. She was observant and picked up on where my husband and I needed the most assistance. She frequently used analogies when explaining moves and tips of the game which made the teaching fun and relatable. Colleen was friendly and and positive and we will be sure to request her when we return. Our favorite feature of our condo was the amazing view of the mountains where we were able to watch a beautiful sunrise each morning. Our 2nd favorite feature was that the condo included a fireplace. We loved how the resort offered complimentary chopped wood and we took advantage of it each evening. We will be returning to Winterplace!

I’ve taken tennis lessons with some of the best teaching pros all over the country (in Tulsa, Pittsburgh, Richmond, Dallas, New Braunfels, TX, Naples, FL and other places) and have played on many surfaces (hard court around the world including Cape Town, South Africa, and even the White House Tennis Court; grass at Oxford University in England; and red clay in Germany). I’m a 73 year old, 4.0 player who competes in National USTA tournaments in my 70s age group, so I have a pretty good idea what an outstanding tennis lesson is. Colleen Campbell’s lesson was one of the best I’ve had, rivaled only by lessons with my older son, Jeremy Carl, an Elite Professional who’s coached nationally ranked juniors, teaches at Belle Haven Country Club in Alexandria, VA and has co-authored two best-selling books on tennis (The Complete Coach and The Complete Player). I mention all this to highlight how impressed I was with Colleen Campbell. She helped me on so many levels in only an hour and a half! She is very well-trained, has beautiful strokes, and zeros in quickly on whatever will improve your game. Having worked with Vic Braden, she is able to bring to her lessons the kind of science and technique Vic has mastered with his unique style of coaching players. Because my wife and I like Wintergreen (we met our tennis pro son, his wife and daughter–who is a strong junior player–for Thanksgiving there a couple of years ago and will do so again), I’m sure we will be back. And when we return to Wintergreen, I hope to stay longer so I can get more lessons with Colleen Campbell! Also, the indoor courts are really well-lit with a surface that is easy on the joints. Wonderful tennis facility.
VJ
Colleen was amazing and gave great instruction. She brought lots of energy and great drills and improve our game! Highly recommend her!
GC
We just got home from a trip of 8 women who went for tennis instruction and trips to local wineries. Shelly was our instructor each day. As we are all mostly novices, we learned so much in one week. I loved her teaching drills and individual instruction! The resort is beautiful! We rented a house on property that was very comfortable. I will definitely return to Wintergreen!
SC
Our group just returned home from a 5 day tennis workshop. Shelly was masterful at teaching 8 women, of varying abilities, something new every day. The tennis center is well equipped (indoors and out), the ball machine is worth the expense especially if you have enough to use it in 15 minute intervals. The trolley pick up is very reliable for inter-resort transportation. Did not visit the gym or the spa, the pool was adequate. Not a very walkable resort. The nearest real grocery store (or any store) is 30 minutes away. There is no nightlife that we were aware of, no real restaurant selection and no entertainment. What there is though, is mother nature at her finest.
RH
The pros at Wintergreen are top notch. They kept the intensity and energy up the entire three days of our clinic. The strategy for doubles play was amazing and kept our attention throughout. I play tennis almost daily and am rated 4.0, and while I have a membership at a Richmond club with pros, these clinics have surpassed my expectations and were absolutely worth every dollar. The facility and courts were in great shape too. We plan on coming back for a third clinic soon!
CS
Always high energy, no wasted time on the court while keeping it fun. Kostyantyn and each Wintergreen pro are first class!
LC
David, Kostyantyn, and Ryan are the greatest! We just finished our third tennis academy and we learn more every time. They are all extremely knowledgeable and skilled and make learning fun!
JA
We’ve had a variety of lessons over the years but this experience vastly exceeded all. The instructors were outstanding and tailored their content to each player’s abilities and method of learning. Kostyantyn and Ryan made the entire weekend a lot of fun for our whole party! Overall this was a great location and best instruction we’ve had, bar none.
JK
My husband and I had a great weekend at Wintergreen tennis Academy. The instruction was excellent , and you could tell our professional (Shelly) really enjoyed coaching. There wasn’t a lot of downtime and we were able to do a lot of drills based on what we wanted to work on. Great place and great staff, highly recommend! I would go back!
JC
Outstanding clear instruction. Coaches made assessment and created a program that worked on our weaknesses. Meaningful constructive breakdown of things we were doing right and wrong. Learned so much and ready to sign up again.
SG
Excellent tennis instruction. Learned new strategies that I have never been taught before and I regularly take lessons/clinics. Coaches were super fun and really high energy. Kept the group moving and switched around our group on 2 courts constantly. Coaches observed our strengths and weaknesses and taught to what was needed. overall such a great tennis academy and can’t wait to go to Wintergreen for tennis again!
SP
A group of my friends and I went up for the weekend for the Tennis Academy. We had such a blast! The tennis instruction was face paced, high energy and very informative. We are 4.0 players looking to take our court strategy and movement to the next level and this did not disappoint. We will be back!!!! Loved our instructors!!
KM
Both instructors were high energy, personable, fun and very informative. We enjoyed learning new tactics to take out tennis to the next level. The hours spent were fun and fast paced, I felt like I certainly got my monies worth and plan to come back again!
MC
Excellent tennis instruction packed into 8 hours. There is still plenty of time to enjoy the resort and surrounding area.
LW
Excellent tennis academy experience with great instruction on strategy as well as technique.
SM
Love all the instructors and instruction at the resort. Been attending for years and look forward to continuing for many more!
PB
Exceptional experience with the personable & skilled pros!! Learned a tremendous amount about strategy, shot selection and technique! Overall, an incredibly positive outstanding learning experience! I look forward to returning for additional instruction.
DH
I have been to Tennis Camp several years and this was by far the best one yet. Kostyantyn and Ryan put a great plan together for our group. I am having a ball using my new tools on the courts.
JR
Attended the weekend Wintergreen Tennis Academy for the second time and had David as the instructor all weekend. He was excellent–no nonsense, listens and observes carefully, makes great recommendations and leads very helpful drills. I couldn’t be more satisfied.
RM
This is the best Tennis Academy for Doubles Strategy and identifying areas for stroke improvement. My group is so happy with the last Academy we attended. Kostyantyn is the best! My tennis game is improved because of this Academy and the staff!
KL
Great get away during covid 19
MS
It is important to note at the that because of COVID, Wintergreen has not been able to open all of their resort amenities. Tennis and golf are fully open, and the pool and lakefront are open on limited hours. Restaurants and shopping at the resort are mostly open only on weekends. Unfortunately some of the other attractions, particularly for kids (ziplines! archery!), remain closed. These will be a draw for us in the future. That said, our experience at Wintergreen was outstanding. We planned a family tennis vacation for a family of 4 at all different levels of tennis, and Kostyantyn, Ryan, David, and Shelley did a great job taking care of us. As an initial matter, they were very proficient as pros in being able quickly to spot the flaws in our game and tactfully and encouragingly help us fix them. Shelly instantly diagnosed a nagging problem I had with my serve and not only fixed it, but gave me the tools so I can fix it myself if it shows up again. She was also very patient with my beginner daughter, and had her smiling and hitting the ball in the court before the end of the lesson. The kids enjoyed David’s fast pace and competitions (Jailbreak!) so much that they forgot all about their video games. And Kostyantyn’s and Ryan’s cardio sessions had me sweating buckets (Kostyantyn still maintains he took it easy on me) with just the right balance of cardio and instruction. I could feel my fitness and my game getting stronger every day. The tennis staff are exceptional. They’re a clear strength. The facilities are also excellent, though it appears COVID has prevented the resort from undertaking some routine maintenance this year. This didn’t affect the quality of the tennis at all – merely cosmetic issues like fencing and landscaping. They have something like a dozen outdoor har-tru courts that are in great shape and three very nice indoor courts for the winter or when the mountain weather becomes unpredictable. We stayed in a spotless, newly-restored condominium with a beautiful mountain view that was walking distance from the tennis center. And the rates were much more economical than several other resorts we investigated. And that is perhaps the second nicest characteristic of the Wintergreen tennis program – the mountain location at around 3500 feet. This meant that we had sunny 70s and low 80s all day long in mid-July while the valleys below baked in the 90s. Our visit was a great success. We planned a vacation with tennis at the center with other activities added in. COVID prevented us from taking advantage of some of the other activities, but didn’t hurt the tennis at all. We look forward to thrashing our tennis friends back home with our new skills, and to coming back again when the resort is able to open fully.
We want to see your racquet sports vacations! When you’re documenting your trip, tag @TennisResortsOnline on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn and use #TROAdventures for a chance to be featured on our page.

Always high energy, no wasted time on the court while keeping it fun. Kostyantyn and each Wintergreen pro are first class!
David, Kostyantyn, and Ryan are the greatest! We just finished our third tennis academy and we learn more every time. They are all extremely knowledgeable and skilled and make learning fun!
Outstanding clear instruction. Coaches made assessment and created a program that worked on our weaknesses. Meaningful constructive breakdown of things we were doing right and wrong. Learned so much and ready to sign up again.
Both instructors were high energy, personable, fun and very informative. We enjoyed learning new tactics to take out tennis to the next level. The hours spent were fun and fast paced, I felt like I certainly got my monies worth and plan to come back again!
Excellent tennis instruction packed into 8 hours. There is still plenty of time to enjoy the resort and surrounding area.
Excellent tennis academy experience with great instruction on strategy as well as technique.
Love all the instructors and instruction at the resort. Been attending for years and look forward to continuing for many more!
Exceptional experience with the personable & skilled pros!! Learned a tremendous amount about strategy, shot selection and technique! Overall, an incredibly positive outstanding learning experience! I look forward to returning for additional instruction.
I have been to Tennis Camp several years and this was by far the best one yet. Kostyantyn and Ryan put a great plan together for our group. I am having a ball using my new tools on the courts.
Attended the weekend Wintergreen Tennis Academy for the second time and had David as the instructor all weekend. He was excellent–no nonsense, listens and observes carefully, makes great recommendations and leads very helpful drills. I couldn’t be more satisfied.
This is the best Tennis Academy for Doubles Strategy and identifying areas for stroke improvement. My group is so happy with the last Academy we attended. Kostyantyn is the best! My tennis game is improved because of this Academy and the staff!
Great get away during covid 19
