Wintergreen spills down the slopes of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains roughly 45 miles west of Charlottesville. A master-planned private resort, it begins 3,800 feet above sea level at Devils Knob, where it overlooks the Shenandoah Valley, and ends in the valley of the Rockfish River. Altogether it covers 11,000 acres, 60 percent of which remains forested in evergreens, towering oaks, and other hardwoods. The forest also hold 13 species of orchids and one ancient fern bed estimated to be 1,000 years old. Some 30 miles of marked hiking trails thread through the property, with connections to one of the most scenic stretches of the Appalachian Trail.
Ecologically sensitive, Wintergreen has long followed a philosophy of preserving as much of the natural environment as possible while still carving out space for homes, condos, golf courses, tennis courts, and ski runs. Concentrating the lodging along the ridge tops at Devils Knob meant they could leave substantial tracts of forest undisturbed, and the construction that did take place adopted the colors of the earth, rocks, and trees in order to blend with the surroundings. There are thousands of condos and homes scattered through the property, but their very unobtrusiveness would lead you to guess far fewer. Deed covenants ensure that that will never change, and so does the fact that the resort is owned not by a corporation but by the property owners themselves, who don’t want to see the value of their investments undermined by the continual addition of new housing stock.
Its physical beauty aside, one reason to choose Wintergreen, especially in the summer, is that temperatures at Devils Knob are typically 10 to 15 degrees cooler than those in the surrounding lowlands. Many of the second home owners come from Washington, D.C., Richmond, and other nearby cities seeking relief from the summer swelter. And it’s no accident, therefore, that the largest of the resort’s tennis complexes drapes across a ridge at the top of the mountains.
There are two tennis complexes at Wintergreen: a small four-court (all clay) facility at Stoney Creek next to the golf clubhouse and the main 18-court complex at Devils Knob. The latter consists of 15 clay courts laid out among the evergreens and hardwoods near the top of a ridge and three hard courts beneath a tent-like pavilion. Devils Knob has a full-service pro shop, and its location puts it just down the road from the Wintergreen Spa and Aquatics & Fitness Center. (Wintergreen also owns the one hard court and pool at Rodes Farm, down in the valley, an otherwise independently managed inn and restaurant with cabins and stables.)
There's a daily roster of activities as well as an adult academy program and summer junior camps. Among the latter are 5 Nike Tennis Camps, some with an overnight option and/or tournament training option to cater to higher level players. The result is that from the time the snow melts in March or April until beyond the fall foliage season in October, these courts are a haven for avid players.
Tennis Programs: The Tennis Academy programs at Wintergreen run three or four days, some midweek, others over weekends. These run year round on the weekends, supplemented by midweek options on certain dates from June through August. In addition, private groups can book customized programs midweek from September through May. Sessions average 2 to 4 hours a day and include intensive drilling and supervised match play, much of it doubles.
The Academy aside, the resort offers a full menu of clinics such as the Advanced Workout for 4.0’s and up, Cardio Tennis, Drills for Skills, and a tactical point playing clinic called Matchplay Madness. Beyond that there are private lessons, game matching, and occasional exhibitions.
Courts Fees: Outdoors: $22/hour midweek; $26/hour weekends and holidays.
Indoors: $35/hour midweek; $45/hour weekends and holidays
Off Court
Golf Courses: Wintergreen has two distinctively different golf courses: one at the top of the mountains at Devils Knob, the other in the valley below along Stoney Creek. It also has a golf academy.
Devils Knob Course: Designed by Ellis Maples, a native of Pinehurst, North Carolina, this challenging 18-hole course follows the surprisingly flat ridges at the top of the mountain. At 3,850 feet it is the highest in the state, with 40 to 50 miles views of the Shenandoah and Rockfish Valleys. That elevation means summer temperatures are cooler than in the valley below but also limit its season to April through November. Par: 70. Length: 5,101-6,300 yards.
Stoney Creek Course: Unlike Devils knob, which is seasonal, this 27-hole championship course remains open year-round. Rees Jones designed the original 18 holes (the Monocan and Shamokin nines), giving them roomy fairways that meander along the valley floor and feature bold mounding like that found on many British courses. He returned 10 years later to add the Tuckahoe 9, which opened in 1998. He laid it out over the hills and through woods, skirting meadows and preserved wetlands. Water hazards are plentiful and so are his trademark moundings. Par: 72. Length: 5,500-7,005 yards.
Spa & Fitness Center: The Wintergarden Spa and Fitness Center stands just up the road from the Devils Knob tennis center. It has indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a sauna, a workout room with windows on the indoor pool, and a spa with 11 rooms for massages and beauty treatments. There is another small fitness center and pool at the golf clubhouse adjacent to the four clay courts in the valley at Stoney Creek.
Out of Bounds Adventure Center: Relocated to Discovery Ridge, the Out of Bounds Adventure Center is a multi-use recreation site with a 25-foot rock-climbing tower, a bungee-trampoline, paintball team competitions and target shooting, a miniature golf course landscaped with hardwood trees and shrubs, a skate park,
Some 30 miles of nature trails wind through the resort, connecting at the top with the Appalachian Trail. Mountain bikes can be rented at the Adventure Center for the 7.2 mile descent to the valley floor or to take on the challenge of the obstacles at the free-ride center. Down in the valley, there is a 20-acre Lake Monocan stocked with bass and pan fish. The lake also has a dock with canoes and paddleboats, picnic areas, volleyball, and a beach of sorts. Rodes Farm at Stoney Creek, while independent of the resort, has a complete English-oriented equestrian center.
Children's programs: The resort runs highly regarded adventurous summer children’s programs for those ages 2½ to 14. During the height of summer, there is also the option for 6 to 12 year olds of a Friday and Saturday evening program in summer so parents can have their own weekend evening out and a midweek overnight campout.
Dining: There are four restaurants at Wintergreen, three at the top of the mountain, a fourth at the golf clubhouse in Stoney Creek.
Accommodations
Getting there
Seasons: That elevation means that temperatures at the main Devils Knob tennis courts are typically 10 to 15 degrees cooler than on the valley floor below, and that helps to make Wintergreen a popular summer weekend getaway for lowlanders in places like Washington, DC, and eastern Virginia. Spring and early summer bring a spectacular display of wildflowers, autumn a blaze of fall colors.
Travel Instructions: By Air: The Charlottesville/Albemarle Airport (CHO) is 44 miles from Wintergreen.

Good, serious work outs with dedicated and knowledgeable coaches. Lots of discussion about court strategies and then putting these in play on the court. No weaknesses with regard to the tennis, but don’t go there if you are looking for nightlife. But then you would probably be too tired to go out after the tennis sessions.
JM
Tennis academies are fantastic. I learned so much about positioning and strategy from David and Jon. Have taken lots of lessons in my tennis ‘lifetime’ and these guys are truly exceptional. Hidden treasure up there on that beautiful mountaintop!

Great Staff…excellent!!
EM
I cannot recommend Wintergreen enough! This is a fantastic camp in a fantastic setting. The pros (Jon, Dave and Konstantin) are excellent. They quickly dial in to your strengths and weaknesses, then quickly set up an instruction plan to improve your game play.
JM
Awesome tennis weekend!

I attended my 4th academy this past weekend (Jan 2016) at Wintergreen. I feel like our instructor, Dave Hardy, listened to our group’s requests for the things we wanted to work on and identified things in our game play that could use improvement. He worked on it all! I feel more confident about my game and came home with some great things to continue to work on. Our group of 5 went out to dinner at the resort and also used the spa and fitness center. All were great experiences. Try Wintergreen! You will love it!
CK
Let the pros know your skill level and ask ahead if you want to focus on certain areas of your game.

Wintergreen is simply gorgeous! Great summer escape from the mid-Atlantic heat. And the clay courts are fabulous! Knowledgable, friendly instructors – or just do what we did, rendevous with the family for a tennis smack down family “tournament”! Much fun
KA
Our two daughters attended tennis camp at Wintergreen and had a wonderful experience. The coaches were exceptional and the girls really improved their tennis after only one week. They worked hard but also had fun! In the cool, beautiful mountains of Virginia, this is an ideal setting to enjoy the sport.

The weekend tennis academy is the absolute best. I attended the July 2015 9 hour academy and was very pleased to see we also received a half hour of private instruction in addition to the scheduled activity. Jon runs a first class operation. All instructors are extremely knowledgable, patient and have a wonderful sense of humor. We played hard, learned a lot and had fun. I’ve been going to Wintergreen’s tennis classes for the past 7 years, and have seen major improvements in my game.
SM
Wonderful experience for my whole family! The kids and adults attended both group and private lessons and enjoyed every minute of it. All of the instructors were positive, knowledgable, and made the experience both worthwhile and fun. They are able to meet you at your level and help push you to the next. Thanks to the entire staff for all you did to make our tennis experience at Wintergreen amazing!
DR
Attended a weekend instructional academy June 19-21,2015. Jonathon S, the director of tennis was our instructor and was excellent. The group was small with two 4.0 and two 4.5 players, the instruction was on point focusing on strategy, positioning, shot selection and some mechanics. The situational drills and doubles positioning strategy were very good. We also managed to spend time on singles strategy and movement. Overall all the value and quality of instruction not to mention the mild summer weather at elevation make it a solid tennis destination.

Wintergreen Resort is an excellent facility. I have been there several times over the past 2 years — strictly for tennis instruction. The teaching staff is incredibly knowledgeable and very friendly. Although I was focused on tennis when I went, I know that they have excellent golf and skiing opportunities (during the proper seasons) and the mountains having several excellent hiking options.
KC
I’ve been to Wintergreen many times and have always had a great experience, looking forward to a return trip. The staff and pros are friendly, helpful, and engaging – they’re always looking for feedback on how to improve the attendees’ specific experiences with the mission of helping the attendees meet any goals they may have set for themselves for that specific session. This, in addition to the high energy and numerous types of drills the programs offer, is very refreshing. Definitely a nice change of pace from other programs where you just wait in a line until you’re mindlessly fed tennis balls! The only real negative (if it even is a negative) that I’ve experienced is that the resort CAN be tough to get to, since it’s on a mountain. However, it’s definitely worth the trek, because once you’re up there, the scenery is gorgeous. The resort also has a bunch of other amenities (a spa, skiing/snowboarding, etc) that make a longer trip definitely worth the time.
JJ
The tennis facility is great. The teaching staff is top notch. I have been going for the last two years and they have helped my game tremendously. I’ve done group class as well as personalized sessions. I highly recommend anyone from beginning to advanced to attend.
CR
Excellent instructors, great at tailoring tennis clinics to your needs and at helping already solid players get a lot better. Also very enjoyable guys to work with. Highly recommend!

Great retail!! I have been to Wintergreen Tennis multiple times- family-like atmosphere with outstanding customer service. These people really understand the hospitality industry!!
DM
The pros at Wintergreen make the experience fun and challenging from day one. They are very personable, learn names quickly, and are there to make sure all of our needs (tennis and beyond) are met. They mix up the sessions to give a good variety. Each time, I leave as a better player and having a great vacation.
BL
Wintergreen Pros are players who can teach. They dynamically adjust teaching methods to suit individual and group needs. They are always prepared with a plan for the session. They can teach any level. If you are an experienced player, they tweak what needs to be tweaked, nothing more, nothing less. They don’t try to change your game so much that it destroys what you have built. Lastly, their friendliness and personability is 2nd to none. If you are a tennis enthusiast of any level, you will find that the experience at Wintergreen will make you a better player.
CG
The Resort has become one of the premier adult team training sites in the country. Teams from the Midatlantic all train here and many have won Nationals because of it. A mix of strategy and concepts make Wintergreen Resort one of the best and affordable experiences. If you have a team, bring it to Wintergreen. We won a National championship because of it. You can to!!!
KA
Great location, tennis activities for all ages and ability levels, and the BEST STAFF!!
PL
Extremely customized tennis academy that focuses on ideals and concepts that will improve your game immediately. Amazing staff!! Our team goes twice a year- we now consistently make it to sectionals and nationals!!

Wintergreen is a lovely, family mountain resort. The tennis is terrific, especially in the late spring through early fall, when the temperature is 10 – 15 degrees cooler up the mountain than in the valley. Great teaching by Jon, Dave, and Constantine, and the Academies really improve your tennis, especially doubles strategy. Plus they are fun. Top notch place on the top of the mountain.
LA
The ultimate tennis resort. Great setting, great instructors. Play inside or outside. In addition great lodging, restaurants, and a world class spa.

Excellent tennis facilities in an idyllic mountain setting with skilled, friendly instructors.

Wintergreen Resort has some of the nicest tennis facilities I have visited in the fifty years I have been playing. The courts are immaculate and well kept in all seasons. The clubhouse is modern, well equipped and comfortable. I highly recommend it to players of all skill levels!

The instruction was tailored to each individual. The feedback was continuous, constructive, and well communicated. There is so much I’ve taken away from the instruction received over the 3 days. Wintergreen Tennis Academy is truly a quality program!
BP
The pros are fantastic. Always positive and always have ways to improve or adjust for the best results. Highly recommend their academy for any level of tennis player.
SB
It’s always a great time here (it’s my third year playing at the resort). Every year the program exceeds my expectations and I feel that the staff offer new and innovative ways to approach the game. This academy is the best!
BC
The best “boutique” style tennis academy in the world. Everything is SO customized to the individual/team needs. The three instructors were outstanding in hour they communicated, articulated, and organized OUR tennis academy. We will now go back at least 3 times annually!!
LM
The tennis pros at Wintergreen are all excellent instructors and friendly, they teach a consistent strong modern style and have fun unique drills to really drive it home. This isn’t a “country club easy drills, feel good, sugar coat your bad game” type of place. If you’re looking for a vacation experience that has a relaxing atmosphere yet will truly get your game to the next level, look no further.
LM
This is wonderful. Love coming here. The coaches are awesome

The staff at the Wintergreen Tennis Academy is top notch; true professionals in every way. We have been going twice a year for 7 years and every time we go we learn so many new strategies and nuances of the games. Our whole team’s doubles play has improved ten fold. The best thing is that they keep really good notes on each team and can taylor the academy to fit our needs.

From the facilities to the instructors, this camp has it all. The professionalism and instructing is second to none. I have been to other tennis camps in the past and this one is by far the best

The Wintergreen Tennis Academy Professionals have uniquely developed a highly personalized and effective level of tennis instruction within a resort atmosphere. Wintergreen Professionals connect with players in a manner that is more like what you expect from a Home Town Club. The group is seasoned, they work well together and understand the 360 degree experience desired by weekend tennis warriors.
KL
The resort has plenty of outdoor clay courts and three indoor courts, surrounded by the large trees of the Shenandoah valley. The instruction is top notch and will definitely help your game. Just come eager to learn and have fun.

All the pros at Wintergreen are knowledgeable, fun, and know how to push your game to the next level. Wintergreen is set in a beautiful location and has many other opportunities for recreation. We just returned from a wonderful 2015 tennis academy weekend at Wintergreen with 4 other couples! Excellent instruction and seamless transitions – our group included 3.0 ladies, 4.0 men, and everything in between! Everyone – all levels – came away happy, and over dinner we argued over which pros we liked the best! Hope to return next year!
BC
The weekend tennis academy provided 8 hours of fast paced, fun filled superior instruction. I have attended other tennis clinics and this one is probably my favorite ever. All of the pros were knowledgeable, high energy, and FUN! I will definitely get another group together and do this again!
