Wintergreen spills down the slopes of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains roughly 45 miles west of Charlottesville. A master-planned private resort, it begins 3,800 feet above sea level at Devils Knob, where it overlooks the Shenandoah Valley, and ends in the valley of the Rockfish River. Altogether it covers 11,000 acres, 60 percent of which remains forested in evergreens, towering oaks, and other hardwoods. The forest also hold 13 species of orchids and one ancient fern bed estimated to be 1,000 years old. Some 30 miles of marked hiking trails thread through the property, with connections to one of the most scenic stretches of the Appalachian Trail.
Ecologically sensitive, Wintergreen has long followed a philosophy of preserving as much of the natural environment as possible while still carving out space for homes, condos, golf courses, tennis courts, and ski runs. Concentrating the lodging along the ridge tops at Devils Knob meant they could leave substantial tracts of forest undisturbed, and the construction that did take place adopted the colors of the earth, rocks, and trees in order to blend with the surroundings. There are thousands of condos and homes scattered through the property, but their very unobtrusiveness would lead you to guess far fewer. Deed covenants ensure that that will never change, and so does the fact that the resort is owned not by a corporation but by the property owners themselves, who don’t want to see the value of their investments undermined by the continual addition of new housing stock.
Its physical beauty aside, one reason to choose Wintergreen, especially in the summer, is that temperatures at Devils Knob are typically 10 to 15 degrees cooler than those in the surrounding lowlands. Many of the second home owners come from Washington, D.C., Richmond, and other nearby cities seeking relief from the summer swelter. And it’s no accident, therefore, that the largest of the resort’s tennis complexes drapes across a ridge at the top of the mountains.
There are two tennis complexes at Wintergreen: a small four-court (all clay) facility at Stoney Creek next to the golf clubhouse and the main 18-court complex at Devils Knob. The latter consists of 15 clay courts laid out among the evergreens and hardwoods near the top of a ridge and three hard courts beneath a tent-like pavilion. Devils Knob has a full-service pro shop, and its location puts it just down the road from the Wintergreen Spa and Aquatics & Fitness Center. (Wintergreen also owns the one hard court and pool at Rodes Farm, down in the valley, an otherwise independently managed inn and restaurant with cabins and stables.)
There's a daily roster of activities as well as an adult academy program and summer junior camps. Among the latter are 5 Nike Tennis Camps, some with an overnight option and/or tournament training option to cater to higher level players. The result is that from the time the snow melts in March or April until beyond the fall foliage season in October, these courts are a haven for avid players.
Tennis Programs: The Tennis Academy programs at Wintergreen run three or four days, some midweek, others over weekends. These run year round on the weekends, supplemented by midweek options on certain dates from June through August. In addition, private groups can book customized programs midweek from September through May. Sessions average 2 to 4 hours a day and include intensive drilling and supervised match play, much of it doubles.
The Academy aside, the resort offers a full menu of clinics such as the Advanced Workout for 4.0’s and up, Cardio Tennis, Drills for Skills, and a tactical point playing clinic called Matchplay Madness. Beyond that there are private lessons, game matching, and occasional exhibitions.
Courts Fees: Outdoors: $22/hour midweek; $26/hour weekends and holidays.
Indoors: $35/hour midweek; $45/hour weekends and holidays
Off Court
Golf Courses: Wintergreen has two distinctively different golf courses: one at the top of the mountains at Devils Knob, the other in the valley below along Stoney Creek. It also has a golf academy.
Devils Knob Course: Designed by Ellis Maples, a native of Pinehurst, North Carolina, this challenging 18-hole course follows the surprisingly flat ridges at the top of the mountain. At 3,850 feet it is the highest in the state, with 40 to 50 miles views of the Shenandoah and Rockfish Valleys. That elevation means summer temperatures are cooler than in the valley below but also limit its season to April through November. Par: 70. Length: 5,101-6,300 yards.
Stoney Creek Course: Unlike Devils knob, which is seasonal, this 27-hole championship course remains open year-round. Rees Jones designed the original 18 holes (the Monocan and Shamokin nines), giving them roomy fairways that meander along the valley floor and feature bold mounding like that found on many British courses. He returned 10 years later to add the Tuckahoe 9, which opened in 1998. He laid it out over the hills and through woods, skirting meadows and preserved wetlands. Water hazards are plentiful and so are his trademark moundings. Par: 72. Length: 5,500-7,005 yards.
Spa & Fitness Center: The Wintergarden Spa and Fitness Center stands just up the road from the Devils Knob tennis center. It has indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a sauna, a workout room with windows on the indoor pool, and a spa with 11 rooms for massages and beauty treatments. There is another small fitness center and pool at the golf clubhouse adjacent to the four clay courts in the valley at Stoney Creek.
Out of Bounds Adventure Center: Relocated to Discovery Ridge, the Out of Bounds Adventure Center is a multi-use recreation site with a 25-foot rock-climbing tower, a bungee-trampoline, paintball team competitions and target shooting, a miniature golf course landscaped with hardwood trees and shrubs, a skate park,
Some 30 miles of nature trails wind through the resort, connecting at the top with the Appalachian Trail. Mountain bikes can be rented at the Adventure Center for the 7.2 mile descent to the valley floor or to take on the challenge of the obstacles at the free-ride center. Down in the valley, there is a 20-acre Lake Monocan stocked with bass and pan fish. The lake also has a dock with canoes and paddleboats, picnic areas, volleyball, and a beach of sorts. Rodes Farm at Stoney Creek, while independent of the resort, has a complete English-oriented equestrian center.
Children's programs: The resort runs highly regarded adventurous summer children’s programs for those ages 2½ to 14. During the height of summer, there is also the option for 6 to 12 year olds of a Friday and Saturday evening program in summer so parents can have their own weekend evening out and a midweek overnight campout.
Dining: There are four restaurants at Wintergreen, three at the top of the mountain, a fourth at the golf clubhouse in Stoney Creek.
Accommodations
Getting there
Seasons: That elevation means that temperatures at the main Devils Knob tennis courts are typically 10 to 15 degrees cooler than on the valley floor below, and that helps to make Wintergreen a popular summer weekend getaway for lowlanders in places like Washington, DC, and eastern Virginia. Spring and early summer bring a spectacular display of wildflowers, autumn a blaze of fall colors.
Travel Instructions: By Air: The Charlottesville/Albemarle Airport (CHO) is 44 miles from Wintergreen.

It’s a beautiful location for tennis located at the peak of a mountain. You’ll never find better clay courts and indoor hard courts in Virginia with such great service and people.
SG
Get instructors and lovely location in the cool, sunny mountains of Virginia. Just down the road in the valley are interesting breweries and wineries for sitting outdoors. Also near Appalachian trail and other great trails and overlooks of the Shenandoah. My first choice to get away from the heat. There are a number of B&Bs in the valley if you don’t want a condo.
MN
Great instruction for a group who wants a few hours concentrated in one day at a resort that the group can drive to in a few hours.
SP
Great staff… wonderful mountaintop location.
KK
First off, the guys at the Wintergreen Tennis academy have impeccable customer service and high energy! My tennis team had a great time doing drills and playing matches over the two days we were there. I feel as though I left with great feedback and as a better player, especially for doubles.
RC
Wintergreen rocks! I really enjoyed my stay! Dave, John, and Kostyanyin are great instructors. I have already started working on my game, and incorporating a lot of things they taught me. Can’t wait to come back!
SL
My first tennis camp was at Wintergreen this summer. An avid, competitor who has taken numerous clinics all ver the country, this was one of the very best programs that I’ve participated in. The skills instruction was outstanding, and even better was the training on building match play. I can’t wait to return!
MA
The facility and instruction was phenomenal. I’ve attended all 4 majors and am a tennis fanatic. I’ve attended other tennis camps and this one has surpassed them all. Dave, Jon, and Konstatine….kudos to you guys!
JJ
I visit the resort at least 3-4 times a year. The tennis instructors are very knowledgeable and the drills and simulations have helped my game tremendously. The facility itself is very nice and the mountain setting is great. I’m already looking forward to my next visit.

Playing tennis at Wintergreen Tennis Academy / Resort in the Blue Ridge Mountains is wonderful on many levels. For starters, Jonathan and his staff are very knowledgable, enthusiastic and friendly towards players of all levels. They have a heart for teaching. I’ve picked up some great strategy for match play and improved various aspects of my game through their teaching. My wife loves the fast paced nature of “cardio tennis” and our children have thoroughly enjoyed clinics and the Nike Tennis camp held at Wintergreen. The facilities are outstanding. With over a dozen well maintained Har-Tru courts, there’s always an ability to get a court even on short notice. One of the best parts about Wintergreen is being located at 3,800 feet in the heart of the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains. Hitting tennis balls at this elevation is a real treat and the cool air allows you to play all day! I highly recommend heading to Wintergreen Resort for your next tennis vacation.
KM
It’s in a beautiful location, with a wide variety of lodgings and wonderful amenities such as excellent restaurants.
CO
The tennis coaches David and Constantine were fantastic. This was my first time at a tennis camp and I learned so much and am definitely feeling more confident and competent on the tennis court this season. I would highly recommend this academy with these coaches.
JO
This is by far my favorite place to play tennis! They have awesome pros and a very relaxed atmosphere. You can count on them to make sure you have an awesome experience! I will definitely go back soon. Their Pro Shop is somewhat limited, though.
MO
Pros and facilities were perfect. Great clinics with pros who taught useful doubles strategies that I hadn’t ever learned in 10 years of tennis lessons.
JM
The greatest doubles tennis instruction I have ever gotten!!
AR
All of the tennis pros are outstanding! They are all resourceful & extremely hardworking. The entire staff, including Anita, who are the backbone of the Wintergreen tennis staff, keep the morale upbeat, positive & focused! The staff take pride in their work & take time to foster friendships with all of their students & members. The staff treat all of the members & guests with professionalism and respect. Dave serves as a role model for professionalism & courtesy as he constantly strives to have his students & members receive the best possible ideal experience! I am lucky & fortunate to be a part of this positive & healthy tennis experience!!! I travel a great distance several times a week to hit with Dave, & for sure look forward to each & every time we have our hitting sessions!!!! I absolutely recommend Wintergreen Resort Tennis to all ages, & all levels to come & to experience the ideal tennis experience!!! Have fun…come to Wintergreen!!! You will for sure not regret it!!!

Visited here because my wife is a tennis enthusiast. Glad she brought me here, what a beautiful part of the country. If you love tennis or nature, recommend you try it. If you love both, don’t miss this place.
KS
I would definitely recommend attending a tennis academy at Wintergreen Resort. The staff is exceptional and are always open to working on skills you wish to improve. You can craft a tennis academy to your liking which helps you get the most out of your tennis experience. They really push you, but it is a lot of fun! I can’t wait to go back for my next academy.
CM
It’s a combination of great drills, personalized instruction and lots of playing time.
CH
Although I have been to a few of the resorts and had great experiences, Wintergreen is by far the best tennis resort and academy I have attended. Jon Sarosiek and the other pros have consistently been a pleasure to deal with. We enjoy going to Wintergreen so much that I began to take my tennis teams down there for practice. Regardless of the size of the class, the pros seem to find time to work with each individual. They absolutely love instructing, and their passion for the sport is infectious. The players continue to improve and enjoy themselves while doing it. Every teammate we’ve taken to Wintergreen has had only positive feedback and a thirst for more. With their welcoming personalities and professionalism, Jon and his group have found a perfect recipe for the tennis vacation.
PT
Great resort full of amenities. Instructors are highly responsive in developing a program tailored to the skills and needs of individuals and teams. All resort personnel make everyone comfortable and I can see a clear improvement in my game after only 2 days.
MS
Terrific instruction. They geared clinics toward Doubles play – which was what our group needed. Learne through play vs a lot of drills. I go a lot more out of putting new techniques to work in an actual game. Have both indoor and outdoor courts – which was a bonus since Mither Nature did not cooperate during my visit
RT
An outstanding tennis facility and academy close to home in Virginia. The tennis staff/instructors are highly qualified and work/adapt well with all skill levels. There is a mix of hard courts and har-tru courts available for play. Attention is given to all facets of the game as well as items selected by the students. Instruction is also enhanced by video analysis provided during the tennis camp. This academy is certainly worth the visit.
MC
The staff at WIntergreen is friendly and knowledgeable. The pro’s are great to work with weather you are there an hour, a day, a week or whatever. I used to be a teaching pro and I really appreciate Jonathon’s ability to get to the root of a stroke issue. Clinics are well run even with different levels of players involved. The shop is well stocked for the available space. Also great to have the indoor courts as well as the outdoor clay courts.
MH
A great four season resort with full indoor and outdoor tennis, as well as skiing in the winter, hiking in the summer, and even a full blown spa for pampering in between matches!
JB
So much to do in the area! Tennis, Golf, Wineries, Meaderies, Cideries, Restaurants, etc. The tennis instruction is top notch! Check to see if restaurants are open when you plan your trip.
CE
Great pros!!!!!!!!! Only negative is foggy weather has pushed us inside to play.
CH
The instructors are awesome. When we go as a group, all 3 instructors compliment each other in the way they teach. They don’t teach you different things. Very patient and helpful. No weaknesses found yet.
MM
Beautiful resort outside Charlottesville, Virginia. Reasonably priced, easy access to Charlottesville and an easy drive from the Washington-Baltimore area, Richmond, Virginia, and North Carolina. Tennis, golf and hiking are the main attractions spring through the fall, but plenty of other activities for all ages, including skiing in the winter. During the summer, there’s nothing like the crisp, cool days/evenings at Wintergreen. Our favorite resort.
BD
Pros, Instruction, Drills, Facilities, Flexibility of Instruction, Group availability, Proximity to the Washington, DC area.
EV
wonderful location and even better programs and instructors!!!!
AG
For social tennis players, the Wintergreen tennis academies combine the best of both. To spend a weekend in the mountains with a group of friends is a real treat. Add to that, the tennis instruction is truly exceptional! All three pros, lead by Jon Sarosiek, work together seemlessly to make the academy sessions challenging and fun. Our group has been going twice a year for over seven years. It’s something we look forward to each and every time. The only down side I can think of is when the academy comes to an end.
SW
Wintergreen Tennis is a great program. I have been several times over a period of fifteen or so years, and like all great tennis facilities, it has maintained a consistently outstanding performance. It is just a marvelous feeling driving up the mountain to the resort in mid-summer heat and feel the air cool. Turning a sweltering 95 turn to 85 or lower in invigorating. Courts are perfect har-tru, the setting is tall pines. I love it.
KC
Wintergreen and the Wintergreen Tennis Academy has provided me, simply stated, with the best tennis instruction I’ve ever received. My friends who had been there convinced me to make the trip even though it meant leaving my family during the peak vacation week we were on Cape Cod…. and wow, was it worth it! Excellent personalized instruction. Great pro to player ratio. Just the right balance of information, drills and practicing what we were learning through match play. Can’t recommend it more highly.
HT
Beautiful tennis facility with terrific coaches! Really enjoyed the cool summer temps when all of Virginia was baking…
AA
Great resort in the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia, with extremely high caliber instruction and professionals. Some of the best teaching and training in the region.
ML
The Instructors are phenomenal!! Expertise on helping my family’s tennis game was amazing. Truly would recommend spending time with Wintergreens staff.
SB
Great staff! I had an awesome time learning more strategy and tactics.
PD
Great facility with 16 Har-Tru courts at almost 4,000 feet. Instruction is fantastic and they set you up with matches when requested. Plus, you have beautiful golf, hiking biking, and some of the best alcohol tourism in the East with four breweries, 12 wineries, two cideries, and a distillery within a half hour! How do you beat that?
ST
We have a family of 4 doubles teams that travel to tennis camps all around and there are a number of things that have stood out at Wintergreen that ultimately make it our favorite camp. First and foremost, the level of instruction is unlike any we’ve ever experienced. It seems that every ball we touch is made useful by being a step toward improvement. And ultimately, the level of play for our entire family is drastically improved with each visit (of which there have now been 7). While I believe that to me most important for a good tennis camp, the following makes the experience even that much better: the pros have fantastic attitudes, are incredibly flexible to meet your needs, have an eye for quick, effective habit changes, and put obvious effort into both adjusting their instruction with the evolution of the game as well as customizing the curriculum to the particular group’s needs. If I had to pick a single drawback to the resort, it would be that it’s so far from city life that there are just a few restaurants to choose from. But that’s hardly a weakness in the eyes of some and certainly doesn’t impact the tennis game.
ME
Tennis Instruction is spot on. Great Pros that listen to you! They have helped me and my team become better tennis players and more competitive.
JK
Wintergreen has great weather because it is cooler ip in the mountains when hot elsewhere, the coaches are too notch and the courts are well maintained and very nice to play on. Jon, the head pro, has a knack for assisting even with a single lesson and they’re great at dealing with groups.
CG
Strong tennis instruction with a focus on strategy for high level players and technique for beginners to intermediate. The Director/staff have the BEST customer service. Its a must visit if your in the Midatlantic or visiting the area!
BH
As a a tennis teaching professional at a fitness & wellness center and a former college player now USTA league player, I would highly recommend Wintergreen Tennis Academy to anyone. Their teaching staff is exceptional. The knowledge and enthusiasm each one of them brings to each player that attends their academies is the best I’ve ever seen. I was there for business, but had the chance to observe them coaching and interacting with their guests. I also have countless tennis playing friends that return there each year for the great instruction they receive on the court and an all around fun experience they have at the beautiful resort in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Wintergreen Resort and the tennis academy should be awarded and noted for their top notch tennis instruction, very well kept and clean facility, outstanding resort amenities, and much more. I am looking forward to my next visit!
SS
Instruction at tennis academy was fabulous. I’d like to see the pro shop carry more selection for us fuller sized women. When I was there recently they had one top that was size XL, and no tennis dresses or skirts in that size.
DT
The instructors are energetic, amusing and encouraging. They try to engage every one in conversation and banter with all. The 9 hours of instruction over 3 days flew by. Fantastic time was had by all.
BG
Recently had the opportunity to attend a tennis academy weekend. Great experience. Easy enrollment, excellent instructions by very professional teachers, reasonably price, friendly atmosphere and would highly recommend participating to anyone.
VS
My favorite place for 3 main reasons: exceptional instructors, from the head tennis pro on down; abundance of outdoor clay courts in exceptional shape ((about 20 courts); and the beauty of being in the mountains, with both the scenery, low humidity & cooler temps in the otherwise hot summer of the valley. August has low 80s & 70s temps!! Love the tennis academies–have been to several in past few years. Lots of other stuff to do on the mountain…ski, golf, hike, fitness center, pool, mountain bike from the ski lifts, kid’s activities & game & play area, etc. something for everyone. Good restaurants also. Love this place!! The only weak area might be there is only 3 indoor tennis courts, but the tennis academies & daily classes take precedence; however that means getting a court for ur own use can be a challenge on rainy days.
JR
Great facility and great staff. Academy and clinics are top notch.
FM
It can be a trek from DC to Wintergreen but it is worth the ride. The scenery and mountain air will refresh your spirit! The housing is first class and my friends and I enjoy the tennis facility. We go twice a year to improve our skills and the instruction is top notch. We are always better players when we leave!
We want to see your racquet sports vacations! When you’re documenting your trip, tag @TennisResortsOnline on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn and use #TROAdventures for a chance to be featured on our page.

If I had to pick a single drawback to the resort, it would be that it’s so far from city life that there are just a few restaurants to choose from. But that’s hardly a weakness in the eyes of some and certainly doesn’t impact the tennis game.
Tennis Instruction is spot on. Great Pros that listen to you! They have helped me and my team become better tennis players and more competitive.
Wintergreen has great weather because it is cooler ip in the mountains when hot elsewhere, the coaches are too notch and the courts are well maintained and very nice to play on. Jon, the head pro, has a knack for assisting even with a single lesson and they’re great at dealing with groups.
Strong tennis instruction with a focus on strategy for high level players and technique for beginners to intermediate. The Director/staff have the BEST customer service. Its a must visit if your in the Midatlantic or visiting the area!
Instruction at tennis academy was fabulous. I’d like to see the pro shop carry more selection for us fuller sized women. When I was there recently they had one top that was size XL, and no tennis dresses or skirts in that size.
The instructors are energetic, amusing and encouraging. They try to engage every one in conversation and banter with all. The 9 hours of instruction over 3 days flew by. Fantastic time was had by all.
Recently had the opportunity to attend a tennis academy weekend. Great experience. Easy enrollment, excellent instructions by very professional teachers, reasonably price, friendly atmosphere and would highly recommend participating to anyone.
Great facility and great staff. Academy and clinics are top notch.
It can be a trek from DC to Wintergreen but it is worth the ride. The scenery and mountain air will refresh your spirit! The housing is first class and my friends and I enjoy the tennis facility. We go twice a year to improve our skills and the instruction is top notch. We are always better players when we leave!
