The Inn at Perry Cabin sits at anchor alongside Chesapeake Bay in St. Michaels on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Both the name and inspiration date to 1816, when a naval veteran of the War of 1812, Samuel Hambleton, built the original inn—now the north wing of the hotel—to resemble the Commodore’s cabin on the USS Niagara, a cabin once occupied by Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, for whom he was aide-de-camp.
Over the years the property has gone through numerous transformations—private home, farm, riding stable—before finally emerging as an intimate luxury resort with 75 rooms and a wealth of amenities, among them a waterfront restaurant, a pub, an 18-hole Pete Dye golf course, a spa and fitness center, an outdoor pool, a marina with a fleet of yachts, and a handsome complex of three Har-Tru tennis courts managed the Cliff Drysdale Tennis.
The mainland approach to the inn is a brick-paved alley of linden trees leading to the main entrance and a low-rise cluster of gabled white-clapboard buildings set off by nautical blue shutters. As inviting as that corridor is, the more appropriate means of arrival, given the region’s maritime history, is by boat across Chesapeake Bay, heaving to at the resort’s marina. (On request, the resort will send one of its yachts to meet you in Annapolis.) Either way, once there, you don’t really need a car: the shops, restaurants, and historic homes of St. Michaels are within easy walking—or biking—distance, as is the 18-acre waterfront campus of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, the Inn’s next-door neighbor. the Inn’s small footprint—25 acres landscaped with flowers, magnolias, cypress—means none of its distractions are very far away with one exception: the golf course, which can be reached by free shuttle. That’s the charm of it. You can settle in here on the Eastern Shore, play tennis or golf or bocce, go sailing, explore the bay on a kayak, bike into town, or get a massage and never be far from your well-appointed room or a feast of local oysters or crab.

20 Reviews on “Inn at Perry Cabin”
One of my favorite tennis vacations to date! Matt was an exceptional pro and did a great job tailoring the lessons and clinics to what we needed to work on, with lots of high energy! Inn at Perry Cabin is a stunning destination with beautiful accommodations and out of this world dining. 10/10 would come again!
I stayed at the Inn this past weekend, I took clinics on Friday, Saturday & Sunday with Matt. The clinics were so much fun and it seems like the club has a great program. The pro shop is a little small but the clinics, courts, and resort as a whole are amazing.
We are recently new members of the Links at Perry Cabin which includes the use of the tennis center. We are new to tennis and the pro Matt Kirkham has been great working with us and fitting us in for lessons and the right clinics. We are looking forward to the rest of the season playing tennis here!
I was staying at the resort for the weekend and took some lessons from the tennis pro Matt, he was great on the court and the Har Tru courts were amazing. I would definitely recommend this location to others and the tennis facility was pristine as was the rest of the resort!
We are Members of the Links at Perry Cabin and enjoy the tennis amenities but would like to see more classes or programs/group play and needs better pro shop.
I had such an amazing time at the Inn and got to play tennis while I was there. Not expecting much at first until I met Andrew! Andrew is the director and head pro at the Inn and is phenomenal. He was willing to help and very communicative. He was such a great instructor, the best I’ve ever had, I wish I could have taken more lessons.
I stayed for a few days and spent time hitting with Andrew and participated in the weekend clinics. Andrew was a blast to work with and had a deep understanding of the game while also explaining in ways that I could understand. I’m sure to take up tennis back at home now, and can’t speak any more highly of Andrew and the program he runs here!
The tennis program opened in 2018 under the excellent leadership of Rob Wright. The following year Andrew Reilley took over and made it even better. The Har-Tru courts are in beautiful condition and Andrew is very accommodating in arranging times for lessons. He is an excellent pro and a very fine young man,
The Inn at Perry Cabin is a beautiful resort with many amenities. The recent addition of 3 hard tru tennis courts are fantastic. There have been many improvements and upgrades to the resort the past 2 years which have made it truly a destination not to be missed.
My wife and I just started taking beginner lessons. Rob Wright , the Tennis Pro, has been fantastic keeping us motivated and improving our skills. The New Clay Court Facilities look great.
The Inn at Perry Cabin by Belmond has three terrific tennis courts with lights that dry in an instance, and a truly wonderful tennis program and tennis instructor named Rob Wright. I played the number one position my sophomore junior and senior years on my high school team that was undefeated over eight years,. I won the State Championship my senior year, and was a tennis instructor myself during my college years. I say this to give background to the fact that I know what it takes to have a good tennis program, and the Inn at Perry Cabin has such a program.
I’ve been visiting the Inn at Perry Cabin for a number of years and have always enjoyed It’s elegant charm. To my delight, the Inn added three absolutely gorgeous clay tennis courts. I took two lessons from the tennis pro, Rob Wright, and found him to be a great instructor. I would give this resort a resounding five star rating!!
Rob, the tennis coach, was very accommodating to both your schedule and needs of what you want to focus on during session. Very helpful with instruction and have variety drills to practice the skills . Not sure if it is an amenity but a ball machine would be great to have and be available to guests if they wish to practice hitting without the lessons or in free time
The pro, Rob Wright, was professional and helpful. The har-tru courts were pristine.
I literally hadnt picked up a racket in 20 years and the instructor Rob was GREAT. He got me right back into the swing of things and provided great insight and most importantly kept it fun! I would DEF RECOMMEND.
Rob Wright is an excellent tennis pro! He is part of a great new team at the Inn at Perry Cabin
Rob is a fantastic instructor with great enthusiasm for his clients! Extremely patient and really catered to my needs during the lesson. Rob went above and beyond to assist with my learning of the basics and general understanding of the sport. I enjoyed the lesson so much that I took a second the next day! We will be back to this beautiful resort for more lessons with Rob!
I must admit that I was tentative about taking a tennis lesson with Rob Wright because I am not that good of a player but after my lesson with Rob I was couldn’t wait to take my next lesson! Rob was an exceptional teacher, very kind, very patient and was constantly making me feel as though I was an awesome player :-). Additionally, Rob was very accommodating regarding the time I could take my lesson (which in retrospect was not ideal since it was in the middle of a hot day) but again he was very kind and even had extra water bottles for me. Excellent experience with an excellent teacher (Rob Wright).
Rob was a patient, kind and knowledgeable instructor. He was great one on one and in a group setting. He touched on all kinds of strategies for singles and doubles. He is also great with correcting form on volleys, groundstrokes and technique. The new hartru courts at The Inn at Perry Cabin are beautiful. I look forward to playing there in the future.
Exceptional facilities! Rob, our instructor, went above and beyond to make sure everyone in the group was engaged and active. Delightful experience!
