Jonathon markson tennis is just the best. It doesnt seem to matter which country you are in, they always have the best pros! Not only are the pros completely awesome teachers, they are also fabulous personalities and so interestng. The resort choices they give you are fabulous, i absolutely loved my apartment/ resort. I have attended adult Jonathon markson tennis in Italy and Portugal and i can tell you, it would be very difficult to find a better experience. I am a coach, and i have been to many many fine usa resorts, but they pale to this experience.
I attended the single player week on early November. It was a mix of players who had come on their own or with a small group of friends. Everybody mixes in over the week. Most arrive Sunday and leave Saturday. Vasco who has been part of the set up for many years has moved to Lisbon but Luis still heads up the week and has a team of great coaches. We lost half and hour of play to a shower in the week but the weather in early November was ideal for tennis in the mid 20’s. I was in a group of four and the groups are well matched on the larger weeks, we were 17 in total spread across 4 courts. At least half the players had been before. The seafood in Portugal is first class. We had the usual 3 hours in the morning and the chance to play latter in the afternoon. Luis organises a tournament on the Friday afternoon. Extra solo lessons can be booked (Euro30). Luis has 30+ year of coaching experience and always adds something to your game The hotel is adequate on and bed and breakfast basis but their is the option to stay in self catering flats. For Sunshine Fresh Sea Air and Tennis its hard to beat
I did not book via Markson but directly with Tennis Academy Mallorca which is based in Paguera 30 minutes from Palma. The centre runs a regular weekly camp that runs 9-12pm Monday to Friday.(295Euro) When you book you are taking pot luck on the level of the other participants. On my most recent visit my wife who is an improver was not going to play but in fact a number of those booked in were at her level so they had two groups one improvers and another of solid club players. This worked out well but you could be in a mismatched group. The centre itself has 15 clay courts and the course uses the two courts next to the club house. I must have been here 5 or 6 times in March and May and can only recall one short 30 minute break for rain. The weather at these times of year is ideal for outside tennis. The course consists of basket drills and a mix of games. The chief instructor Ali Yenilmez is usually on court and ensures that this is a high quality camp. Paguera is a German resort and has a good range of hotels. I have stayed in the Valentin Reina which is 5 minutes walk from the centre.
Tennis – Luis and Vasco did a very good job at running the program, they assesed quickly the areas to improve on for each person. I have come back with a better serve and forhand. 9/10
Location/Resort – this is a fantastic location resort – the rooms are spacious (I mean spacious) and clean and modern. The pool area is fantastic. Close to the Beach and the town of uz is walking distance, Lagos is a 5 min car ride. 9/10
I will go back.
I went for the adult week in 2006. Had fun with other participants but in general having been on other tennis holidays I wouldn’t recommend this week. The coaches were of mixed standard – some good, some not so good and class sizes were too big to get focussed instruction. The lodging was only ok and definitely not worth the money – similarly the food was suitable for kids more than adults. If I was going again I’d just pay for the coaching and be a non resident. Have had much better lessons and value in Spain on my own organised trips.
