Located in Keswick, a few miles east of Charlottesville, the 80-room Keswick Hall dates back more than 100 years. It was originally designed as an eighteen-room Georgian-Italianate villa, but after passing through several hands was eventually converted into a boutique hotel by Sir Bernard Ashley, of Laura Ashley fabrics.
The current owners, Molly and Robert Hardie, have sought both to preserve the history and update the 600-acre property into a retreat with contemporary decor and amenities. The luxury rooms and suites have been adorned with light woods, timeless furnishings, and locally inspired paintings. Among the resort’s amenities are Marigold by Jean-George, a rustic chic restaurant devoted to showcasing local products, including some grown on the estate. There is also an 18-hole Pete Dye golf course spread across the rolling terrain of central Virginia. For tennis players, however, Keswick Hall’s central amenity is the impressively renovated tennis complex, comprised of five European red-clay courts and two Claytech courts, the latter a carpet/red-clay hybrid. Tristan Venables directs the operation. Originally from Australia, he played No. 1 for the University of Denver and played the ITF satellite tour before turning to coaching. At Keswick Hall, his weekly programming includes clinics, Cardio tennis, league play, and private lessons, serving both hotel guests and members.
