Over four decades after the first condominiums were constructed on Kiawah, the island’s glorious 10-mile-long beach remains a nesting ground for thousands of endangered loggerhead turtles and its protected wilderness still provides a home for deer, bobcats, alligators, and more than 200 species of birds. But make no mistake about it: civilization has arrived in a big way. Two resort villages, five golf courses, an expansive racquet club—the former site of the U.S. Clay Court Championships and a Fed Cup tie—a 255-room hotel, and more than 500 resort-managed villas and homes trail through a landscape where once there was only woods and marsh.
Tennis Resorts Online has consistently ranked the Kiawah Island Golf Resort one of the top tennis facilities, if not the No. 1 resort. Kiawah has earned the top spot so many times that it has caused tennis directors at some competing resorts to question whether the rankings are rigged.
But make no mistake, they’ve won fair and square. The tennis program here benefits from a number of world-class features, including:
- A first-rate teaching staff that is as engaging and knowledgeable as any team, with more than a dozen pros on island during peak times
- A daily clinic and drill lineup that is fast-paced, fun and caters to everyone from beginners to college-level players
- A strong kids’ program, including popular summer camps and a year-round residential tennis academy
- A fast-growing pickleball community, with dozens of people participating in clinics and open-play sessions at any given time
But the tennis program is but a small part of Kiawah’s overall appeal. Part of the allure of this place is that it offers something for everyone. Beachgoers marvel at its 10 miles of pristine white sand coastline. Golfers rave about its five championship courses. Families rise before dawn—trust us, it’s worth it—to catch a glimpse of the island’s endangered loggerhead turtles, some of which weigh over 300 pounds. And people congregate at low tide every day to watch local dolphins strand feed, a spectacle Netflix captured in its popular nature series, Animal.
The resort occupies virtually all of the 10,000-acre island from which it takes its name. Charles Fraser, famous for his sensitive development of Sea Pines Resort, laid the original plans for Kiawah, which opened in 1976. Roughly half of the island is to remain in its original state, and the variety of vegetation—some native, some planted—is impressive. Much of the development clusters near East Beach, home to an elegant beachfront hotel—a Forbes Travel Guide 5-Star winner called the Sanctuary—and a Forbes 5-Star winning spa, all just steps from a tennis and pickleball complex named for the resort’s longtime emeritus tennis director Roy Barth. The island’s far eastern end, by contrast, embraces many private houses and the two most famous golf courses, Osprey Point and the Ocean Course. An on-property shuttle makes going from place to place easy, so does an extensive network of bike paths. The resort itself is close enough Charleston to make forays into the historic city easy—driving time is about 45 minutes—yet far enough removed that the island feels like its own destination.
As the name suggests, the resort puts great stock in its five golf courses. Each of the 18-hole layouts bears the name of a different architect. Gary Player designed and then redesigned Cougar Point, complete with a stately clubhouse near the resort entrance. Renovations to Tom Fazio’s Osprey Point and to Pete Dye’s incredible links-style Ocean Course—which has hosted a Ryder Cup and multiple PGA Championships—retained the structure of both courses, while adding elements that improve the experience for golfers. Jack Nicklaus reimagined his Turtle Point Course. The fifth course, Clyde Johnston’s Oak Point, is in Kiawah River Estates just outside the entrance to the island.
In spite of its absence from the resort’s name, tennis—and, to a growing extent, pickleball—are as enmeshed in this place as any activity. Until recently, there were two racquet clubs. Though only one remains, it has benefited from the more than $200 million that the resort has spent in recent years on facility upgrades and enhancements, with more on the way. As part of those expenditures, the Roy Barth Tennis Center built 10 additional Har-Tru tennis courts, bringing its total to 22 (three of them hard and lined for pickleball; the resort is also building six new dedicated pickleball courts in 2023).
This sprawling complex benefits from its location near The Sanctuary, a world-renowned hotel just a four-minute walk away. Until his retirement in early 2018, former touring pro Roy Barth had been the only tennis director the resort had ever known. Barth handed the reins reigns to his son Jonathan, who himself had been head pro at the resort since 1999. Together they’ve designed one of the country’s foremost tennis programs, one almost perennially ranked No. 1 in our annual reader poll. (Roy, meanwhile, has written a book, Point of Impact, and has a website with on-court tips and videos from his teaching career.

Kiawah has a world class tennis resort. Exceptional facilities, instructors, and off court amenities.
Excellent tennis instruction – best I’ve ever received. My game improved tremendously in a short amount of time. Would highly recommend to anyone!
What a two week experience my family had this summer. The tennis was suberb. My grandchildren had a great time in the Junior Camp. The swimming pool was great. Tennis was great and they arranged games for my wife and I. Johnathon was a excellent teacher. We are planning on going back next July.
I recently had the pleasure of spending a week at Kiawah Island. I spent most mornings at the tennis facility; I cannot speak highly enough of the experience. Even before we arrived, Luke and his exceptional customer service team made us feel welcomed and valued. Their attention to detail and genuine care for us set the tone for an unforgettable tennis experience.
The tennis program itself was outstanding. I had the privilege of working with the head professional- David Boyd- several days. From the very beginning, I was impressed with his ability to offer simple tips that made a big impact on my tennis game and others in the class as well. Other days, I joined the Tournament Tough group. Barry, tennis professional, facilitated an entertaining yet rigorous drill-class. If I’m sweating that much, I may as well get in a few laughs too. Their expertise and engaging teaching styles turned every class into an enjoyable and memorable experience.
What truly stood out was how much my kids enjoyed their time on the courts, thanks in large part to the college summer help staff. The younger staff members connected wonderfully with my children. They created a friendly, yet tough, atmosphere that made tennis enjoyable for them.
The Kiawah Island Tennis club combines top-notch facilities with a warm and welcoming staff, making it a paradise for tennis enthusiasts of all ages. Almost forgot…on the way home my kids (12 and 14) voted KIAWAH best beach vacation ever! We can’t wait to return!
Participating in the tennis drill sessions at the Roy Barth Tennis Center is always a major highlight of my time at Kiawah. I highly recommend them to anyone, regardless of past tennis experience. The coaches are knowledgeable and friendly, and they run the tennis sessions in a very fun and constructive manner.
Love the new courts and proximity to the beach!
Jonathan Barth runs an excellent tennis facility. He is a skilled tennis player and the consummate kind of pro that everyone feels comfortable with. Jonathan Barth is cheerful, friendly, and looks for individual ways to help people. The clinics are always great fun and well run The facility is beautiful well kept and the pro shop always has lovely things to buy. We always look forward to playing there.
This was our fourth trip to Kiawah with my family and as always the place exceeded my expectations. The entire staff is super friendly and kind. They really go the extra mile trying to set up fun matches and social play during your stay. I took several clinics and they are great. We really like the fact that they have a teaching method consistent across all coaches. They may explain things with their own style but the message is always consistent. besides tennis, we love coming here as we are able to take bike rides on the beach, and around the island. My husband is more into golfing so it is great as we are both able to meet our expectations on the things we want to do. Kiawah island is our favorite place to go on vacation!
I visited Kiawah Island Resort this past weekend and absolutely loved it. they accommodated my entire family with social play and the lessons and clinics were outstanding. I took a few lessons with the director Jonathan Barth and despite how busy he was with all the programs and events that they ran, he took the time to work on my game and gave me some tips that are still paying dividends. the setting of this place is just amazing. plenty of beaches and great dinning options as well. we don’t play as much pickleball but gave it a try and it was a blast. we are definitely getting back to Kiawah soon!
Fantastic programs. Would not hesitate to recommend Kiawah Island Resort to tennis enthusiasts.
Get ready to have the perfect vacation.
My family visited Kiawah in June 2023 and has been our favorite vacation spot because of the tennis for the several years. We really enjoy the tournament tough clinics as it was a great way to meet other players while getting a great workout and instruction.
Love vacationing and visiting Kiawah on weekends.
Great as a family vacation, or a romantic getaway too!
Kiawah can’t be beat for a family and friends vacation! Over the last year, we have been there with family and friends and have been there for a tennis tournament. We love playing tennis at the Roy Barth Tennis Center in the clinics, kids play in the academy and we all play pickleball. The pros are outstanding and the resort is beautiful! The houses and condos are beautiful and well equipped. We bike to the tennis center and to the pools and fitness center. We love Kiawah and will continue to go back annually! Our favorite vacation of the year!
The Staff was outstanding and the resort wonderful! Great Tennis and Pickleball. Going back this summer with my family

There is no better place to visit than Kiawah Island for a vacation. The tennis facility is outstanding! A wonderful vacation spot for couples and family!
Kiawah is my favorite place to play tennis! They go out of their way to make sure I am in the right programs and also help me find matches to play while I am there. The junior programs are also great! I can’t wait to get back there soon.
