When former Top 10 player Tim Mayotte was a student at Stanford, he used to travel to the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club to play in the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championships. “I don’t know if it’s nostalgia or what, but I used to always get such a kick out of playing there,” he remembers. “Obviously the setting was so great—it’s right on the beach. There was something about the courts—somebody told me that they were built way deep, that they went way down, so there was kind of a solidness about the way the ball bounced off the court. For me, it was the ultimate hardcourt experience. It sticks in my mind as one of the great places.”
La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club ranks as one of Southern California’s iconic beachfront resorts. It was a beach and yacht club until 1935, when the current owner Bill Kellogg’s great grandfather bought it, added four tennis courts, and began to run tournaments that featured the likes of Bill Tilden, Bobby Riggs, and Jack Kramer. Since then it has attracted a Who’s Who of tennis legends, professional, collegiate, and nationally ranked amateurs. It’s showcase tournament, the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles, is the second oldest in California (after the Ojai) and fifth oldest in the nation. But is its day-to-day devotion to social tennis that accounts for its popularity among avid tennis players. One key to its renown is its tennis host, schedules courts and puts together matches—singles, doubles, or mixed—drawing whenever necessary on a large and diverse stable of local players. That game matching aside, however, its clinics and round robins are clearly geared to mere tennis mortals, with activities for B and C players.
To get a sense of the atmosphere of LJBTC, it is easiest to think of it as a club that also happens to have lodging. Guests often come for a week or more at a time, frequently year after year. “Guests come back the same time every year,” notes Bill Kellogg, the fourth generation to run the club. “If they book the same room for the same week two years running they get priority.” During any given week in the summer, 60% to 70% of the guests have typically been there before. To encourage socializing, the club makes barbecues available to those who want to grill on the beach and twice a week sets up to larger shared grills for anyone to use. “People end up sharing desserts, or whatever,” says Kellogg.
Its tennis pedigree dates to 1935 when William Kellogg, a newspaperman, bought the La Jolla Beach & Yacht Club, installed four tennis courts, and began to run tournaments that featured the likes of Bill Tilden, Bobby Riggs, and Jack Kramer. There are photos on the wall outside alongside Court 2 of such tennis notables as Maureen Connelly, Dennis Ralston, Rafael Osuna, Stan Smith, Jack Kramer, Pancho Segura, and Frank Sedgman among others, and there’s a case full of tennis trophies inside near the Walnut Lounge that includes many of the hundreds of gold balls won by Dodo Cheney, a frequent competitor here. The Pacific Coast Doubles, the fifth oldest tournament in the country, takes place there every March, drawing players from such formidable tennis powerhouses as Stanford, UCLA, USC, and Pepperdine. It also hosts three USTA national hardcourt championships: the Men’s and Women’s 40s, the Father and Son, and the National Women’s 50s-80s Championships. Today there are a dozen hard courts for 90 rooms and suites, none more than a few steps from a private beach.
Tennis Staff: Tennis director Conan Lorenzo, who played Division I tennis at Washington State University, has more than a decade of professional teaching experience, including Conan Lorenzo, Tennis Director La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, La Jolla, Californiaa five-year stint as Director of Junior Programs at San Diego’s George Barnes Junior Tennis Center. After expanding La Jolla’s junior programs, he moved up to the overall directorship. He continues to enhance the already solid programming, pointing to the high quality of the teaching staff. “Half of our pros are high-performance certified,” he notes. He wants guests to feel they’re part of a family and welcome at any of the tennis activities. “Anyone who comes here is going to get a chance to play any kind of tennis they want,” he told me.
Tennis Programs: The weekly roster runs the gamut from private lessons to clinics, workouts, Cardio tennis, and adult mixers. The yearly calendar is studded with tournaments—the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championships that drew Tim Mayotte here among them—both spectator and participant. Game matching has a very high priority. And there are junior academy programs over the year-end holidays and in summer.
Court Complex: 12 hard courts, 8 with lights, and 2 pickleball courts. Court fees: None.
Off Court
Beach: The resort fronts 2,200 feet of private coastline. Dolphins can often be seen swimming off shore, and there are kayaks for rent nearby. And because this is a private beach, liquor is allowed (something not true of public beaches in San Diego County).
Golf Courses: The resort has a 9-hole par-3 golf course and a golf academy, both for adults and juniors.
Spa & Fitness Center: The fitness center comprises two adjoining rooms, one with about a dozen Cybex stations plus dumbbells and balls; the other with about the same number of cardio pieces and TVs. Massage services are available next door.
A passageway from the beach leads to a Junior Olympic outdoor heated swimming pool with lap lanes, set in an inner courtyard.
Children's programs: The resort’s emphasis on tennis extends to juniors who have a wide range of programs. Those include year-round after-school and weekend group tennis clinics and junior matchmaking. For more information about these programs, contact the tennis department at 858-551-4616.
Dining: There are several dining options, all with oceanfront settings. The exclusive Club Dining, open only to members and hotel guests, serves regional cuisine that emphasizes local, artisanal, and seasonal ingredients. Immediately adjacent, The Walnut Lounge serves cocktails and light bites. They are complemented by the iconic Marine Room, a San Diego staple for the past 80 years, remarkable for its award-winning cuisine, views of sunsets over the ocean cove, and its unusual location: it protrudes so far into the beach that waves sometimes crash against its foundation.

Our family loves the LJBT. We have four daughters and we play as a family with a pro regularly. I also have family reunions each summer and we do round robins with cousins, etc. The pros are fantastic. My stroke is what it is because of the pros there. I take regular lessons at two country clubs in Dallas (and have been for over 20 years) but nothing compares!

My husband and I are still talking about our stay at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club in California. My initial reason for choosing La Jolla was the fact that it has a beach as part of its property. Having gone to other tennis resorts that claim easy access to a beach, the opposite was true: it was tough to park, pay as the meter ran out and inconvenient. This resort has it all. The beach, a cove, is part of the property. One of the restaurants has an entire wall of windows to capture seabirds, surfers and jumping fish! Although La Jolla B&T Club offers a lot, everything is so well placed that one does not have to walk far or drive to get to different things. The guest desk, open 24/7, the pool, the spa pool, the tennis shop and sign up area, the restaurants with exceptionally great food, comfortable seating among the gardens and parking are all in a central area. From there the many beautiful courts spread out but are all easy to access as are the little golf course and parking. I would say that the atmosphere at a resort is one of the most important intangibles and this one is quiet but busy with people headed to all the offerings or enjoying the offerings. Every employee we met went out of their way to help with something you need, be it in the dining room, in your room, using the grounds, exploring the nearby area or going for a trip outside the resort. My hair dresser visited the city of La Jolla a week after we did, unbeknownst to me, and said she could stay for a long, long time. All I can say is she should have seen the resort and she would have felt the unique relaxation and welcoming we felt from the physical facilities and the people. We were able to create our own package with the help of the front desk personnel and we now know what a great deal we got. Simple terrific holiday!

Strengths: Location, tennis facilities Weakness: Accomodations are old and outdated. Capital Improvements need to reflect the prestige of the area and cost of rooms

My family’s favorite vacation destination. Tennis, beach, golf, amazing food, sunsets. Something for everyone in an extremely friendly environment. Great staff.
ST
I love to play tennis and upon arriving as a hotel guest at the La Jolla facility I was shocked by the quality and condition of the tennis facility and didn’t know until we checked in that we were granted access to these tournament courts. Throughout our stay, I spent time watching the instruction, which was extremely professional. I will choose this location due in part to the tennis facility along with everything else.
EL
La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club is the ultimate family beach vacation. Our time spent here is always an annual highlight for our family.

Beautiful place! Excellent tennis pros! We have visited two years in a row and are planning to return for a third year this fall. The rooms are very comfortable and well cared for. I love the vintage feel of the whole place – all with top notch facilities, dining and staff! Everyone there is very friendly – feels like you are back for a visit to your hometown! The tennis instruction is excellent – I always learn new techniques and just have a blast playing on the beautiful courts. Love it!

Love the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. Literally on the Pacific Ocean- this resort provides great tennis and beach fun. Both the hotel and tennis staff are warm and always helpful. I’ll never forget a fabulous dinner we had in their first class restuarant as we watched the sun set on the ocean-truly a memory forever. A must for one looking for good and tennis and relaxation!
JH
Beautiful location on the beach. Friendly staff. Nice accomodations. Close to shops and restaurants.

We are so pleased with our Easter vacation. Would love to make it an annual event. Loved the beach bbqs and fires on the beach with friends to end our great days. Watching the children on Easter and all the great events was wonderful. Don’t play tennis but just loved it. Thanking La Jolla beach and tennis. Can’t wait to come again. Will recommend to all friends

Great tennis facilities and you are right on the ocean… A gem of a property!
CS
amazing location, directly on the ocean and less than 10 minutes from downtown LaJolla. Tennis facilities are very good. The rooms and public spaces in the hotel are a bit dated, and could use some renovations.
KM
La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club is a wonderful destination for the overall getaway. The tennis was great, and there are plenty of othe activities to take part in while you are there, or just relax on the beautiful beach.

This is a wonderful summer family place. We always could find an open court when we wanted one and it was great to cool off at the beach after a game.
PC
Top notch instruction, great food and location and a beautiful and comfortable place to vacation.

Staff was very welcoming & helpful; rooms were clean. Dining was not to quality that I expected.

Excellent vacation setting with a traditional environment. Several activities on sight and within close driving. Our family can stay there for a week without leaving and find something new every day! Great staff both on the court and in the office. Our family has been coming for over 40 years. We’d like to stay more often, however the cost prohibits us from booking in the summer time anymore. We do try and visit as often as possible.
CO
If you are going to the San Diego area and you like to play tennis there is no better place to stay the the LJB&T…great location to all communities in & around the San Diego area, on the beach, great restaurants within minutes of the resort and good tennis at all playing levels.
TE
My wife, son and I had a great time at La Jolla. It is rich in tennis tradition, which is important to my family and the beauty of the club and hotel is second to none. We played tennis and enjoyed the dining along the beach. It was a life memorable experience having coffee and seeing the dolphins swimming right off the shore. We look forward to coming back.

Friendly and helpful staff and amazon scenery! One of the best!

The tennis courts are well maintained and set back from the beach but not too far – you can still hear and feel the ocean breeze. The resort itself is simply wonderful and a must-not-miss for anybody who loves the the beauty of the Pacific Ocean.

Fantasdtic……and full of old fashion “clubby” chram……..I take my family there at least 16 time s a year !!
DP
Top notch in every way. We have been 3 times in the last couple of years for a week each and look forward to returning. Great restaurants within walking distance and very close to the Village and San Diego
FS
We found the facilites extremely clean; the grounds beautifully maintained, and the staff went the “second-mile” in striving to answer any question or meet any need we had. We’d highly recommend this wonderful facility, especially for families:)
LC
Loved it. The weather was beautiful, the courts were well-maintained, the staff was very helpful. The rooms were getting a little run-down and the courtside water wasn’t cold but that isn’t stopping me from returning again this year.
SD
Wonderful! Have been going there annually for 27 years. Perfect for young families, but wonderful for anyone! We go each year with another family who plays tennis. My children play tennis, my husband and I don’t. We go for the “Beach” part of what the club offers.

This is a great tennis and beach club, a great kept secret of the best when it comes to great tennis and great amenities. It doesn’t get any better when it comes to exceptional tennis facilities and beautiful beaches. A true jewel of North America Resorts.

We had a quiet 2 room suite and 2 bath fully functional kitchen right on the beach The pool area is great for little ones and bigger kids. The restaurant/staff is very nice and accomadating. You are close to great restaurants in town and of course Sea World is only 25 mins away..This place is great for family fun. Young and old will have a wonderful time.
LS
We wanted to be ON the beach..we have 3 small children under 9 years old..the room was ok, could have been bigger–but LOVED being so close to the beach, which is why we came..loved the walk to town..the bbq on the beach at night and the service for the bbq set up. The pool area is just ok, nothing special..the room, also nothing special..we dont play golf, or tennis really-but took a court for an hour–we came for the beach experience and we had fun–very laid back..We usually go to the Hotel Del, and the price points are similiar..But, the Del is classy, the resort spotless, so many restaurants, tons of things for kids to do–the room VERY nice and we had a junior suite..as large, if not larger than your 1 bedroom..
HL
Rooms and facilities and staff and beach and ambience etc etc are all exceptional, there are plenty of activities for everyone in our family including our four children aged 11 through 18. A stellar property!
WB
they have hosted the father/ daughter national hardcourts for the last 2 years. the courts were available to competitors for warmups and fun matches during our stay. the staff was extremely welcoming during our stays. location is idyllic- a 150 yard long veranda runs 15 yards from the ocean. the hotel ran cookouts on the beach for all the participants. great nearby restaurants of every kind. resort is owner operated for at least 2 generations; great tennis people. grounds contain a 9 hole chip and putt course for giggles.

I have been on six continents and consider myself an extensive world traveler. I’ve stayed in everything from youth hostels to five star luxury resorts. There is no place on earth like the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club! Having lived in La Jolla for several years, it always feels as though I’ve returned home upon check in. There is a certain warmth and charm and quaintness to the place as it hasn’t changed much in all the years it’s been there. There are so few properties on the sand in California, and this one is by far THE BEST. The staff is wonderful, and the food is respectable. The beachside service is exceptional, and there are fantastic activities for children. The rooms could use a little TLC, but the views more than make up for that! It is extremely rare to find a resort that is perfect for both romantic getaways and family vacations, but the LJB&TC pulls it off with flying colors! It is truly a gem of a place and is an excellent example of the “the jewel” that is La Jolla.
DN
My family has been summer vacationing here for the past 20+ years. It is an experience like no other…The beach is pristine, cleaned every day, and is just steps from your backdoor. Country club service on the beach…it doesn’t get better than that. Don’t forget to reserve your outdoor bbq pit from the beach concierge. Cooking outdoor with all of the other families/guests/members is quite an experience. There is no comparison to this property. Don’t expect much from the rooms…they are spacious and right on the beach. Bite the bullet and pay for a room facing the water.
WN
Fantastic location and fantastic staff. Older buildings, but that even lends to it’s charm.

Strengths- Just a great place to be. Right on the beach, wonderfuld views, great restaurants nearby, so relaxing, great tennis, wonderful staff. Weakness – Can be pricey.

Our family has a history of visiting this fine outstanding resort. You really have everything you need: great beach, great weather, fantastic atmosphere. You can shop. We really like the cove walk. It is fun to walk over from the beach club along the cliff to downtown La Jolla.

Beautiful, relaxing, actually, ON THE BEACH.

Tennis Camp was awesome experience! Pros were very helpful, friendly, and seemed truly interested in improving our game! The instruction was top notch–my tennis game was so inspired when I left there! I gained so many great tips from the pros while there! It is the best, the setting, the history and tradition. I don’t feel there is another place like it.

Excellent private with head pro, beautiful setting with amazing views. Apartment directly on water with dolphins and sea lions in view. Fire pits on the beach at night. Very comfortable atmosphere with friendly staff! Our accommodations were more than I expected, was very pleasantly surprised! Just a short drive to downtown La Jolla shopping and restaurants. Definitely going back when it is warmer and take some tennis friends!

The setting is wonderful, on a beautiful stretch of sandy beach in La Jolla. The bonfire and marshmallow roast the beach concierge set up for us was magical. This is one of our favorite places. Our room, though spacious, quiet and comfortable, was a bit outdated.
WM
If you love tennis in a beach resort atmosphere with great restaurant choices, you can’t beat the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
MB
Stayed during the Pacific Coast Doubles Tournament. Watched some outstanding matches, and the tournament was run exceptionally. The staff from the maid to the management was very accommodating. Looking forward to next year.
JG
The staff is very helpful, friendly and out to please the guest in every way. The restaurant is especially good! Accomodations are varied and very comfortable. We don’t stay for the tennis, but for a solid accomodation in La Jolla. Weakness is that upkeep on buildings is less than A+.
We want to see your racquet sports vacations! When you’re documenting your trip, tag @TennisResortsOnline on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn and use #TROAdventures for a chance to be featured on our page.

The setting is wonderful, on a beautiful stretch of sandy beach in La Jolla. The bonfire and marshmallow roast the beach concierge set up for us was magical. This is one of our favorite places. Our room, though spacious, quiet and comfortable, was a bit outdated.
If you love tennis in a beach resort atmosphere with great restaurant choices, you can’t beat the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
Stayed during the Pacific Coast Doubles Tournament. Watched some outstanding matches, and the tournament was run exceptionally. The staff from the maid to the management was very accommodating. Looking forward to next year.
The staff is very helpful, friendly and out to please the guest in every way. The restaurant is especially good! Accomodations are varied and very comfortable. We don’t stay for the tennis, but for a solid accomodation in La Jolla. Weakness is that upkeep on buildings is less than A+.
