The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel has what even a local cab driver describes as “the best beach on the island.” Kauna’oa Bay is a long crescent of white sand, fringed with obligatory palm trees, and follows the outline of a shallow cove anchored by lava-rock promontories. The hotel sits atop one of those rocky outcrops in a garden of exotic flowers and trees, surrounded by Asian and Pacific sculptures from the Laurence S. Rockefeller collection. The facility is located off to one side of the terraced hillside and hosts 9 tennis and 8 pickle-ball courts, the lowest tennis court is so close to the sea that you can hear the sound of waves breaking on the black-lava rocks.
Tennis almost never snags such prime real estate, and several years ago previous tennis director committed the unthinkable act of taking a chainsaw to some of the tennis complex’s exuberant foliage, which goes wild in the tropical heat and fertile soil, in order to open up those sea views. If that requires coping with a bit more wind on some days, it seems like a reasonable trade off since it means being able to gaze at the ocean at changeovers and perhaps spot a whale sounding just offshore.
Though now owned and managed by Prince Resorts Hawaii, the hotel was an early foray by Laurance S. Rockefeller into luxury resort development. Prior to building the resort, he looked at a black lava rock desert 25 miles north of the town of Kailua-Kona and envisaged a luxury golf and tennis resort. Everyone thought he was crazy; he proved them wrong by attracting a wealthy international clientele, who actually liked the fact that there were no telephones or televisions. As one of the first RockResorts, Mauna Kea became a synonym for the ultimate resort vacation.
Both the traveling public and the resort have changed over the intervening decades, and the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel shares this coast with more than half a dozen resorts, all of them carved out of black lava rock. Few of them afford a more beautiful setting for tennis or have as much on-court activity, a fact reflected in its consistent Top 100 rating in the list we compile annually based on vacationer reviews.
Tennis director Craig Pautler is actually in his second stint overseeing this tennis operation. Although his return in 2004 was not quite so dramatic as an eruption of the Kilauea Volcano at the southern end of the island, it did alter the Hawaiian resort tennis landscape. Pautler, who was there in 1977-82 before moving next door to the Mauna Lani and then up to his daughters’ former prep school in Waimea, lives and breathes customer service. Stroll through the glass doors of the pro shop, and you’ll be greeted by someone who seems genuinely thrilled that you came and will ask, almost without fail, “Can we get you a game?” or otherwise find out about your tennis needs.
The weekly calendar is a blend of private instruction, clinics and social and competitive round robins, along with kids’ programs during the summers and busy holiday periods and a ball machine for the hard core who just want to hone strokes. What brings avid players back year after year, however, is the tirelessly attentive tennis staff, who understand how important it can be just to play. They not only put together singles, doubles, or mixed doubles matches, often drawing on their own stable of active local members, but they also deliver a continual supply of towels and ice water throughout your time on court.an we get you a game?” or otherwise find out about your tennis needs.
Since his return, Pautler has revitalized the program and beautified the complex and constantly worked to keep make improvements. Courts are resurfaced regularly on a rotating basis, old furniture is replaced, structures painted. It took him just over a year to take Mauna Kea to the No. 1 position among Hawaii’s tennis resorts, but from his perspective staying ahead of the competition requires continual attention to every aspect of the tennis experience, from keeping the courts clean (he and his pros, not the landscaping staff, personally wash every court every few weeks because that way they’re more likely to notice other things needing attention) to making sure every guest’s needs are met and more. With him back on court, this entire stretch of the Kohala Coast—and the tennis resorts on the rest of the Hawaiian Islands for that matter—once again have a working model of superlative service.

Beach: A perfect crescent of beach, generally regarded as one of the finest resort beaches in the Hawaii, lines the Kauna’oa Bay immediately below the hotel.
Golf Courses: Robert Trent Jones, Sr. designed the 18-hole Mauna Kea Golf Course, which ranks among the finest in Hawaii. It is characterized by elevation changes, large undulating greens, and strategically situated bunkers. Its third hole, which borders an oceanfront inlet lined with lava rock, is so stunning that it’s often chosen as the site for weddings. Guests also have access to the nearby Hapuna Golf Course, which was designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay and won awards for its environmental sensitivity. It begins near the shore and climbs to 700 feet above sea level.
Mauna Kea’s fitness center consists of two rooms, one paneled with wood and filled with Cardio equipment and dumbbells, the other lined with mirrors and furnished with a dozen LifeFitness stations. The boutique spa is nearby, though rather than have your treatments in rooms there, you can just as easily book them for locations at the Tennis Garden, a spot beneath mesquite-like kiawe trees right along the ocean, or in your own room.
Children's programs: The resort’s children’s program entertains kids ages 5-12 year-round and focuses on outdoor activities as much as possible, utilizing both the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and nearby sister property, The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort. The staff at Seaside Tennis Club also expands junior tennis offerings during major holidays and summers.

The Seaside Tennis Club at Mauna Kea Beach Resort is truly first class – starting with the warmth and hospitality of Chris in the pro shop and then including everyone we encountered there. We took two private lessons from pros Dan and Andre. Both were excellent. And then two group clinics which were very fun, instructional and good exercise. The clinics and lessons flew by. The setting of the club on the beach is outrageously beautiful and the condition of the facility was first class. We thoroughly enjoyed this tennis experience and can’t wait to return!

What is not to love about playing tennis on the most modern cushioned tournament level courts with the waves crashing off to the side and watching the whales and dolphins play? This is the most blissful and fantasy-filled tennis setting ever. The tennis staff is just superb. My kids love playing here because Coach Wayne is just a master of kid psychology and bringing out the best in them in tennis and in their lives. He has the kindness and determination to find the unique traits that make every kid special to be their champion. He turns kids into heroes while also teaching them high level tennis! On the adult side, Coach Tim is just a joy to work with. He does a lot of adult tennis/cardio clinics and they are so popular you really have to plan ahead to get in, but it is worth every second to spend an hour in his exceptionally funny trash talk tennis clinic.

In my opinion, the seaside location of the tennis facility makes it second to none. There’s nothing quite like having your serve toss interrupted by a gigantic humpback whale breaching a couple hundred yards offshore! Staff are excellent, very accommodating, and helpful in setting up games with similar level players. Coaching staff is great, with kids as well as adults. My family’s favorite place to stay on the Big Island, if not the world!

The MKB is one of our all-time favorite destinations. My first visit was in 1976 and we go as often as practical. The hotel itself is outstanding with comfortable rooms, friendly staff and an amazing setting. The beach is second to none in the islands. The food has always been excellent as well. And while the hotel is a bit isolated (if a 15-20 minute drive can be considered isolated), it is not an inconvenience to rent a car and drive a few minutes to get elsewhere. Or, simply stay on property the whole time (and use the shuttle to the sister property) as you will not be at a loss for things to do or places to eat. The tennis facility has always been next level. What was established decades ago has only been improved upon over the years. Craig Pautler has created, and maintained, an outstanding all around program. He has brought together a tremendous staff that does everything they can to make sure everyone gets attention and the tennis experience is as awesome as possible. The location of the courts, the cleanliness of the facilities, and the efforts of the staff make every visit fantastic. If you’ve never been, go. You won’t be disappointed.

We stop hitting occasionally to watch the whales. The weather, year round, is obviously great. This is the only place my wife and I go on vacation. Every day we go to the fitness center, then to a buffet breakfast, and soon after to tennis. After a shower it’s to the beach or pool for the rest of the day until a romantic dinner. Our room always has a full ocean view. Covid has slowed us down, but we can’t wait to get back soon.

The Seaside Tennis Club is part of the Mauna Kea Resort. It is the most amazing tennis setting of any resort I have stayed at. They have 8 or 9 tennis courts and 8 pickleball courts. The courts are set right next to the ocean which provides a beautiful landscape while playing. And lends a cool ocean breeze while playing. Our tennis experience for the entire family was spectacular. The junior tennis program is phenomenal. Coach Wayne has created a model program wherein he teaches life lessons, good sportsmanship, and confidence through the vehicle of tennis. The kids develop strong bonds with the other kids and those friendships continue throughout the day across all of the resort activities–Make friends at tennis, bodyboard all day long next to each other and get your families to go to dinner together. Many of the friendships continue year to year as a lot of the same kids come back for various vacation periods. My wife and I visit the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel every year. The main reason we stay here is because of the outstanding tennis program Craig runs at Seaside Tennis. The courts are right on the water and this time we could see whales breaching off the coast, adding to the uniqueness of this resort. All of the pros are first rate and they have really helped my game, even though I have been playing a long time. I have never not been able to get a match here, and I have witnessed the staff jumping through hoops to get a guest on the court with an appropriate opponent/partner.

We met three of the four women in the pro shop — Cheryl, Monica and Myrish are all enthusiastic and friendly, willing to help with whatever is needed, whether reserving court time, lessons, match play, or simply answering questions about the facility, the hotel or the area in general. The 11 courts are in a beautiful setting right next to the ocean. Just blame any missed ball on looking at the scenery! It’s a plausible excuse here. We worked with pro Brad Karen twice during our stay. He’s the consummate resort pro, working on whatever part of your game you want and not trying to tweak everything about your shot just enough to mess it up (that’s not what vacation is for!). Any change he suggested was minor and truly a fix to a bad habit, not making your stroke “his way.” Since we had just returned to tennis shortly before the trip, we did not ask them to set us up for match play or participate in any clinics, but those options are available. The biggest negative was that I really wasn’t enamored with the clothing selections in the pro shop. I have purchased virtually every tennis outfit I own on vacation and thought I’d be doing the same thing this trip, but I left empty-handed. As with any stay on Hawaii, be prepared for year-round humidity and drink lots of water. If you can adjust to the weather, you’ll have a grand time here. We’re looking forward to returning many times in the future! By the way, if you’re looking for a place to have dinner, the hotel’s Manta restaurant was wonderful.

The tennis center is located on a beautiful piece of land with gorgeous ocean views and refreshing ocean breezes. Our 4 year old daughter had a lesson with Coach Brad, and she was thrilled. Brad was super engaging, encouraging and had her seeing improvement within 30 minutes. She had such a great time, she asked to have another lesson the very next morning. The same day as her lesson, the center was hosting a junior state championship, but it did not interfere with the tennis lessons and everything seemed to be moving along seamlessly. We could not have had a better experience. Thank you!

The facilities are wonderful! Unheard of location for the tennis courts right by the water. The staff is very friendly, ethical, helpful. The pro shop is great! The only disappointment is that the tournaments are getting less attended by players from out of the state Over 35 years ago. we stated playing both tournaments one in April one in September. Now the April one has been cancelled do to poor attendance. Last year the September one was attended mostly by locals. I feel the lack of attendance is that the old pro Jay Paulson advertised, sent invitations and entry forms.. The new one does none of those things. Friends that used to attend said they thought it wasn’t done any more as they did not get an an entry form or saw anything on the tennis magazines. I strongly suggest at least sending out entry forms and advertise on their web site.. . It is a great opportunity for good tennis, hotel lodgings ( reduced room rates and amenities for players) and terrific getaway!

The Seaside Tennis club at the Mauna Kea Beach Resort is spectacular. We were welcomed by friendly and accommodating staff, who brought cold water and scented towels – a very nice touch during the heat of summer in Hawaii. The setting is gorgeous as the courts are right next to the ocean. The pictures do not do it justice! The courts were in excellent shape. We borrowed rackets and a ball hopper, which was handy. The best part is we were able to play with our 6-year old son. The Director of Tennis, Craig Pautler, chatted with us and gave our son treats and even a medal! Apparently, during whale season, you can see the whales from the court – where else can you do that?!? Everyone was friendly and nice, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time at this wonderful facility!

Craig Pautler runs a wonderful tennis center with fun to be had by any age or tennis ability. The courts desperately need to be re-done at the foundation level. Tennis balls are often deflected due to cracks in the court surface and some courts are unplayable. The fences and wind screens need to be replaced. The setting is exceptional and quite beautiful and unlike almost any other resort. The facilities are showing their age and could use some TLC. However, the staff makes the experience as pleasant as possible.

I have enjoyed visiting Mauna Kea, as it was my first time visiting, I especially enjoyed playing tennis as it was my favorite sport to play. During, my stay at Mauna Kea I have experienced the Hawaiian cultural dance and food. The highlight of my stay was that I was able to play tennis every day with amazing coaches to help me improve my tennis skills. I have participated in tennis tournaments such as the “Social Round Robin”. The members, staff and the coaches were very nice to me. The members always gave me tips on how to predict the opposition by looking at how much space is available on my side of the court and after the members invited my family to a barbeque that they hosted. We spent 12 days at Mauna Kea in June and July of 2018. Most of those days our boys, ages 12 and 15, participated in the junior tennis clinics with Wayne Barnes. What an amazing and helpful experience. Our boys had such a great time learning the game from a true professional in Mr. Barnes. He made the experience very fun, however they improved greatly during their time with him. I can’t imagine a better preparatory venue and teaching professionals than we witnessed at Mauna Kea. My wife and I also participated in some of the adult tennis clinics and were equally impressed with the fun, competition and training. This is a beautiful tennis club! The courts are in excellent condition, and the staff is friendly, warm and welcoming. There are plenty of courts so we had no problem reserving courts for when we wanted to play. The only “problem” is the stunning view of the ocean, and the pretty landscaping surrounding the courts. Both my wife and I are no longer playing tennis, but our four grandkids (age 8-13) took lessons and attended daily clinics for nearly three weeks. Because the Mauna Kea has such amazing activities/facilities for the kids, there was only one arranged match although the four kids played together in the late afternoon several times; in all cases the staff went out of its way to make the tennis events highly successful. The tennis professional are especially skilled at motivating kids while providing expert tennis instruction. Our kids can’t wait to get to the court every day.

This place is AMAZING!!!. I have been to 7 of your top 100 tennis resorts and this one beats them all. Unbelievably friendly, charismatic, and detail oriented staff. Cheryl, Myrish, and the rest of the girls who schedule do a great job, with followup calls when plans changed! They are so on top of this clubs functions that it was very reassuring to me before we came we would have great tennis. They got me a fun match with either a local or visitor every day I asked. My son a top 40 in his USTA region worked with pros and got quality matches with other traveling juniors. You will never find more beautiful court situation. Right on the blue ( and I mean BLUE) pacific ocean yet protected from wind by the most amazing tropical fragrant landscaping. They bring you ice cold water with lemon and ICE TOWELS!! The resorts of Mauna Kea and Hapuna Beach Princess, and both resort guests can use facility, are amazing for all you would expect out of elegant high quality Hawaiin hotels with the most prime locations. Both have rare (on the big island) sand beaches that are amazing. A scenic lava trail connects the 2 resorts….and by virtue of its location on the island it virtually NEVER rains!! There is truely no category for how beautiful and tranquil this setting is. Thanks to pro Wayne for connecting us with fun teens pro/partners. Your enthusiasm is contagious. I watched him with other folks and can tell he is that rare individual who is good with little kids, junior aspirers, older men and women. He talked with my son for a half hour after their training….about tennis and life, he loved that. Wayne really cares about this gem of a place and the members and guests who play there. Now I am not a golfer but this apparently is also a top resort for golf and seeing the layout and how it sits on beautiful bluffs above the ocean I thought about it. Have gone to Mauna Kea for decades and it feels like going home. The tennis pros are truly professionals and we have hit with them for years. Love that there is not a new set of pros every year that you have to get to know. Craig, Brad, and Hector are friendly, fun, positive, relaxed, and very skilled, with great ability to just tweak a few things while you are on vacation to improve your game without trying to remake your stroke in 10 days. They are just as good with kids of all ages as they are with adults. Stunning setting next to the ocean!! Love that it is on-site and easy to walk to in the morning. I’ve visited the Mauna Kea properties for more than 10 years and by far–my favorite place. The pros at this facility are long term experts at improving your game. You can’t help but leave a better player. Craig Pautler has assembled a group of pros which span the spectrum of talent. Which ever you select Dan, Brad, Hector, or Wayne you can’t go wrong. We all have our favorites and Hector Mendoza is my preference when going onto the court. Hector quickly analyzes your level of play and then sets out to help you improve weaknesses he sees and strives to make you a better player when you leave the court. Visiting Mauna Kea Tennis is a great experience. I recommend it for anyone wanting to play a game or do the daily clinics.

Court 11 by the ocean has got to be one of the most beautiful tennis courts in the entire world. Play tennis, then watch the whales when switching sides between games. The weather is warm, but not too warm, and hardly any rain there at all. Try it – you like it. Correct that, try it – you’ll love it.

Seaside Tennis at Mauna Kea Resort was a fantastic experience! Our group included 7 children aging in range from 14-27, plus two sets of parents. The children ranged from inexperienced, to highly competitive, high school and college players. Wayne and his team were unbelievably friendly and accommodating, and catered to our diverse group. They managed to create clinics and round robins that tested the high level players, in addition to building the skills of the less experienced players, all while keeping us together as a group. Since we had a big group and changing interests each day, we ended up rescheduling several times, and coming back looking for extra courts. The team couldn’t have been more flexible and really did a great job of working with us. One member forgot her tennis shoes in NY and they chased up a pair for her to use the week we were there. The first day we were there , we did the regularly scheduled clinic. This was perhaps the only disappointment of the week as the level was a bit low for everyone. We quickly adjusted and asked for private lessons with Wayne, who we observed on an adjoining court. The rest of the week was simply outstanding and on many days we played in the morning, then came back in the afternoon for a group lesson with Wayne just because it was so much fun. Mid week Wayne organized a family round robin tournament for us, including Mauna Kea tennis glasses for the winners, which were fiercely battled for. We highly recommend Wayne and his team for: serious tennis players who want a tune up, high level rec players who want to sharpen skills, as well as beginners who want to develop their game. We will definitely be back and next time will organize our vacation around this fantastic facility. Thanks Wayne for a family vacation we will not forget!

Our 13 year old son came home from summer camp and announced that he was going to be playing tennis instead of baseball, where he had done very well. He loved the responsibility of getting the ball in his hands for every play, for owning the wins and losses himself. That spring we went to Mauna Kea in Hawaii during the spring break prior to tennis season to dust off the East Coast wintery cobwebs and get back into the swing of things. The teaching staff there was phenomenal. Our son took a lesson every day with Craig, who worked with him on his technique as well as the mental aspects of the game. He arranged games with local tennis players, and even invited him to play in a round robin tournament. It was fantastic to be able to get instruction in the morning and to have match play in the early evenings. In between there was golf, snorkeling, paddle boarding, whale watching and reading. In addition to our son’s tennis instruction, I (mother), too, played in the morning clinics. The focus was on doubles play and encouraging us all to be more assertive in our net play. I am neither horrible nor terrific, as were the others in the clinic. It was a fun and pleasant start to the mornings. And the staff was always there with a pitcher of ice cold water and a towel just when you needed it. The location is spectacular. The resort is a favorite of the whole family. We spent three spring vacations at the resort. We have plans to return again and again.

We have been coming to the Mauna Kea for four years, specifically for the amazing youth tennis program. Tennis pros Wayne and Craig create such a positive, fun and productive tennis experience for my two boys, ages 7 and 9. The kids have a ball and eagerly participate in clinics with Wayne and private or semi-private lessons with both Wayne and Craig. They help the kids learn and improve on the court. These coaches nurture and grow the kids’ enthusiasm for tennis. Wayne and Craig are so thoughtful, positive, and encouraging. My boys have a BLAST on the courts at the Mauna Kea. Other tennis pros include Hector, Dan and Brad — they too at times have worked with my kids and have also provided great tennis instruction with positive coaching and tennis JOY. The tennis courts are nested adjacent to the ocean, with shade provided by gorgeous, well maintain trees and tropical plants. One can see and hear the white water for the ocean waves in the background. While the environment at the Mauna Kea tennis courts is spectacular, and all the bells and whistles of a super fancy resort — yet the environment is so friendly, open and relaxed. It is a gift to be able to participate in the Mauna Kea tennis program!

The Mauna Kea Beach Resort is the most fabulous tennis vacation spot we have been to. We have been to many,, but the staff,, tennis courts ,, lovely setting,, is specatular to any tennis adventurer. To play tennis along the sea with breathtaking views of visiting whales, dolphins is hard to concentrate on ones tennis game. Craig and his staff are wonderful to be on the courts with . The three most important things we require when we go on vacation are: Great Tennis facilities, amazing beach/ocean, and romantic location. The Mauna Kea has it all, but in our opinion, the tennis is definitely the highlight of our vacation. We’ve been going to the Mauna Kea two to three times a year for over a decade. We are USTA 4.5 players and when we make our reservations to go to the Mauna Kea we e-mail Craig to let him know when we are coming and Craig and his staff make arrangements for us to play every morning with either resort guests or local members/residents. Our matches are always fun and competitive and we have very much enjoyed getting to know some of the residents. The tennis courts are located in one of the most beautiful places in the world – the ocean view court being our favorite. Last time we were there it was difficult to not be distracted by the whales that were swimming past us.

The tennis facility at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is by far and away the most amazing tennis center in the world. And I can say that having played and traveled globally for tennis. The courts are directly on the ocean, only a small cliff separates you and the ball from the crashing waves below. The courts themselves are always in the best shape. In fact, I’ve visited once a year for the past 18 years, and I’ve never thought to myself that the courts needed to be resurfaced, they are impeccably maintained. The staff too makes it all the more welcoming. And it truly is the little things that push it over the edge, cold water, shade on the courts for players and spectators, ice cold towels waiting for you at the change overs. Couldn’t be better as every thing you could imagine is covered! A huge congratulations to Craig and his team for creating an unsurpassed tennis experience!

The Tennis at the Seaside Tennis Facility at the Mauna Kea Beach Resort is fabulous. From the stunning seaside tennis courts to the impeccable service provided by the professional staff, this resort is a must for any tennis player. The front desk staff does an outstanding job of match making for hotel guests. The club membership represents all levels of tennis well. The local club members are friendly and very willing to have guests join their groups. Craig Paulter, the Director of Tennis, has made this resort the hub for Big Island Tennis. The staff makes sure you are never short on fresh, cold water and towels at your court. They also work hard to make sure you are happy with the quality of tennis you are getting at the Seaside Tennis Club. If you are visiting the Big Island in the winter, court eleven is where you want to be. It is not uncommon for your match to be delayed so you can watch the humpback whales just beyond your court! Once you have experienced the Mauna Kea Resort, you will not be able to wait for your return visit.

It was our first tennis entered vacation (we are 3.0 and 3.5 level players), and we absolutely loved it. The staff were very friendly and we learned an incredible amount in a short period of time. Because it is an upscale resort, we were worried that perhaps the staff/and or other players would be “stuck up”, however this was not the case. Everyone was down to earth, helpful and accommodating. Pretty mazing to be able to play tennis right next to the ocean as well. They kept us well hydrated with cold iceboater delivered to the courts and we attended the clinic every morning. If the clinic was full (8 people) we did drills which were fun and engaging, with 3 or 4 in the clinic the instructor was very good at one to one and group skills development. We will start saving for our next rip to this tennis resort!

The Tennis club at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel comprises ten excellently maintained hard courts right by the ocean. The pros, lead by Craig Pautler, are friendly and excellent teachers who make the tennis, at whatever level, fun and challenging. My wife and I spent the last week there with the original intention of maybe hitting a few balls once or twice. My wife is a beginner and I used to be a decent player but hadn’t played for nearly 20 years. One lesson there had us coming back for more every day. My wife is now able to rally with steady and satisfying ground and approach shots and I am now fully conscious of all the bad habits I have to overcome to return to form. It is no exaggeration to say that our tennis experience made our stay at Mauna Kea one of the best vacations we’ve ever had and now we are already planning and dreaming about our next trip. If you have a kid who is thinking of playing this is the place for your first introduction b/c Craig Pautler and team are tremendous and make the experience really fun! They understand that tennis is a lifelong sport and that you need to love it or you will not make it. They do a nice job wrapping in the fundamental aspects in digestable bites for children and are capable of ramping the subject matter at a pace that matches the child’s abilities and maturity. the only negative would be that on a windy day it can be a little windy 🙂

The Mauna Kea Tennis Club is truly exceptional. The views are no doubt the best in the world. Where else can you watch whales breech while playing tennis? The coaches are extremely experienced and challenging while encouraging players at all levels. True professionals. There are many activities to join in including clinics, individual lessons and doubles play. The non-coaching staff is also uniquely gracious. They are experts at arranging games with locals and other guests, and always deliver water and towels with a smile. The leadership of Craig Pautler is evident throughout. He is warm and friendly, while maintaining the high standards that the clientele of this facility demands. This makes for an exceptional tennis experience. Amazing! My husband and I have been here twice, and we’ll be back again. First of all, the venue is like no other in the world for tennis. Sure, they put great golf courses on the water, but usually, tennis courts are an afterthought, in some, unused parking lot. The courts are right on the water, and it’s a wonderful and spectacular distraction! Secondly, the pros are great! Craig Paulter runs great team! We loved Dan! With a week of lessons, my game play skyrocketed! We’ve recommended this to many of our friends, and a few have actually taken lessons from Dan, as well. They loved it! We’ll be back!

WOW! Where do I begin??? First, it is the MOST PICTURESQUE facility I have ever seen, and I have played all over the planet. Playing tennis just yards away from the Pacific Ocean (in full view from most courts) is simply awesome. Between November and March, you can see whales from the courts! Unbelievable. The tennis instructions are simply fantastic. Over a period of two weeks, we worked with two instructors, finally settling on one in particular that matched our goals. Dan was simply terrific. His instructions improved our games tremendously. We both inched up at least a half level; me from a 4 to 4.5 and my wife from a 3 to a 3.5. Matching for games is also great. They are very good at finding matches for you. The place is simply one of the best places on the planet. Hands down. Beautiful location, quality instructions and great player-matching. What else can you ask for?

The Seaside Tennis Club at Mauna Kea Beach Resort is truly first class – starting with the warmth and hospitality of Chris in the pro shop and then including everyone we encountered there. We took two private lessons from pros Dan and Andre. Both were excellent. And then two group clinics which were very fun, instructional and good exercise. The clinics and lessons flew by. The setting of the club on the beach is outrageously beautiful and the condition of the facility was first class. We thoroughly enjoyed this tennis experience and can’t wait to return!
What is not to love about playing tennis on the most modern cushioned tournament level courts with the waves crashing off to the side and watching the whales and dolphins play? This is the most blissful and fantasy-filled tennis setting ever. The tennis staff is just superb. My kids love playing here because Coach Wayne is just a master of kid psychology and bringing out the best in them in tennis and in their lives. He has the kindness and determination to find the unique traits that make every kid special to be their champion. He turns kids into heroes while also teaching them high level tennis! On the adult side, Coach Tim is just a joy to work with. He does a lot of adult tennis/cardio clinics and they are so popular you really have to plan ahead to get in, but it is worth every second to spend an hour in his exceptionally funny trash talk tennis clinic.
It is beyond a doubt the best place to go if you love tennis and/or pickleball. From the unbeatable views, the perfectly maintained courts and grounds, and the warm and inviting staff, it is unbeatable.

In my opinion, the seaside location of the tennis facility makes it second to none. There’s nothing quite like having your serve toss interrupted by a gigantic humpback whale breaching a couple hundred yards offshore! Staff are excellent, very accommodating, and helpful in setting up games with similar level players. Coaching staff is great, with kids as well as adults. My family’s favorite place to stay on the Big Island, if not the world!
The MKB is one of our all-time favorite destinations. My first visit was in 1976 and we go as often as practical. The hotel itself is outstanding with comfortable rooms, friendly staff and an amazing setting. The beach is second to none in the islands. The food has always been excellent as well. And while the hotel is a bit isolated (if a 15-20 minute drive can be considered isolated), it is not an inconvenience to rent a car and drive a few minutes to get elsewhere. Or, simply stay on property the whole time (and use the shuttle to the sister property) as you will not be at a loss for things to do or places to eat. The tennis facility has always been next level. What was established decades ago has only been improved upon over the years. Craig Pautler has created, and maintained, an outstanding all around program. He has brought together a tremendous staff that does everything they can to make sure everyone gets attention and the tennis experience is as awesome as possible. The location of the courts, the cleanliness of the facilities, and the efforts of the staff make every visit fantastic. If you’ve never been, go. You won’t be disappointed.

Director of Tennis Craig Pautler makes sure everyone visiting feels they are more than welcomed and has a fun time. The location of the courts right next to the ocean is amazing. We stop hitting occasionally to watch the whales. The weather, year round, is obviously great. This is the only place my wife and I go on vacation. Every day we go to the fitness center, then to a buffet breakfast, and soon after to tennis. After a shower it’s to the beach or pool for the rest of the day until a romantic dinner. Our room always has a full ocean view. Covid has slowed us down, but we can’t wait to get back soon.
We have been at the Mauna Kea for over 40 years, and it is still favorite place to be at. We missed a couple of years because of Covid and current health issues. The TENNIS COURTS are stunning, and the pro staff is second to none. Craig Paulter is also a living legend, and his group of highly skilled, super friendly, knowledgeable tennis pros are the coolest for any level of player. They will make you feel like family in no time. The annual SMASH TENNIS classic is a must if you can make a trip in December. The view from our suite overlooked nightly manna ray feedings and the friendly parrots. Feeding the koi fish is a family favorite. Mauna Kea is a one-of-a-kind beach location with safe and easy swimmable surf. Pull up a beach lounge chair and stall all day. Family-friendly, but also great for couples or solo trips – easy day trips, hiking, waterfalls, water activities too many to count, incredible golf course, great local foods within short driving distance – didn’t even have time to try the spa, but there’s always the next visit. Mauna Kea Resort has it all: beautiful, seaside tennis and pickleball courts, an outstanding staff all over the resort, but especially at the tennis center, great junior programs, wonderful restaurants, incredible ocean views, a wide, well-maintained beach, and comfortable, modern rooms. I’ve played tennis all over the US and in Europe, and nothing beats the setting at Mauna Kea’s Seaside Tennis Center. You can see whales breaching just offshore if you are there at the right time of year. Craig Pautler and his staff make sure the courts are clean and the players get in as much tennis as they want. In 2023 my wife and I had the pleasure of staying at the resort again (we’ve stayed around 20 times) and this time brought our children and grandchildren with us. My family and I have been vacationing at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and playing tennis at their Seaside Tennis Club for more than 20 years. The Club is exceptionally well managed by Craig Pautler who doubles as my favorite tennis pro. The tennis facilities are immaculate, and the courts are maintained at the highest level. The longtime staff is warm and friendly and anticipates your every need. I will be returning to the Mauna Kea in a couple of months and am counting the days until I am back on the court with Craig.
The Seaside Tennis Club is part of the Mauna Kea Resort. It is the most amazing tennis setting of any resort I have stayed at. They have 8 or 9 tennis courts and 8 pickleball courts. The courts are set right next to the ocean which provides a beautiful landscape while playing. And lends a cool ocean breeze while playing. The tennis and pickleball staff are really knowledgeable and fun to take a lesson from. When looking for a resort vacation, the Mauna Kea has it all!

My family and I had an amazing vacation at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel the past two weeks. We played tennis at the Seaside Tennis Club on property. Our tennis experience for the entire family was spectacular. My children participated in the morning juniors clinics with Wayne and he does a superior job instructing and making tennis fun for all the kids. My two daughters played every day we were here at there request. Additionally, my wife and I played in the adult clinics with Andre, Brad, Tim and Dan. Food was not the best and not worth how much it was and service wasn’t phenomenal but still an incredible experience and will be coming back. (Try and go to different hotels and places for food)
My partner and I took a lesson with Tim DiDonato, one of the pros at Mauna Kea, and he was fabulous. In an hour he had us notably up-leveling our strokes. Plus, he was friendly, sociable, amiable, and funny. We had a blast, and highly recommend Tim to anyone looking for skilled instruction. The junior tennis program is phenomenal. Coach Wayne has created a model program wherein he teaches life lessons, good sportsmanship, and confidence through the vehicle of tennis. The kids develop strong bonds with the other kids and those friendships continue throughout the day across all of the resort activities–Make friends at tennis, bodyboard all day long next to each other and get your families to go to dinner together. Many of the friendships continue year to year as a lot of the same kids come back for various vacation periods. And the nexus of all of this is Coach Wayne and his ability to meld kids from all over the world into a friend group that are all working hard on getting better at tennis.
Without a doubt the highlight was watching our kids play tennis in Coach Wayne’s tennis clinic. He made the experience fun, taught them important skills and brought all the kids together as friends and companions throughout our stay.

We were at the Mauna Kea in early April for 2 weeks and everyone once again, had a trip of a lifetime. One of my partners is just arriving this week for 10 days @ the Mauna Kea for there 10 time. The tennis garden has undergone huge capital improvements including Rebound Ace surfacing, painting, new fencing. It is a beautiful environment and the staff is fantastic.
Before Covid we used to go twice a year as our destination resort. Tennis every day. Surely the most beautiful tennis facility in the world. Craig Pautler and his staff make you feel as if you are the most important guest there. Everyone is happy and upbeat. Highly recommend this incredible facility and setting. I just spent 8 nights at Mauna Kea and played tennis for 2-3 hours almost every day. Daily clinics with Dan and Tim were excellent, high energy, and lots of fun. Found it super easy to set up doubles matches with other clinic players. The courts are in very good shape and the pro shop staff brought out ice water at least a few times during the hour. My wife and I visit the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel every year. The main reason we stay here is because of the outstanding tennis program Craig runs at Seaside Tennis. The courts are right on the water and this time we could see whales breaching off the coast, adding to the uniqueness of this resort. All of the pros are first rate and they have really helped my game, even though I have been playing a long time. I have never not been able to get a match here, and I have witnessed the staff jumping through hoops to get a guest on the court with an appropriate opponent/partner.

My wife and I have been to The Big Island 7 other times, and besides the time our daughter got married on the Kohala Penninsula, this has been our favorite trip here from Florida. I love the tennis center at the Mauna Kea . I brought my racket this time and had a ball using their “PLAYMATE” ball machine. All the staff I came in contact with were terrific. Very friendly, helpful and welcoming. I felt at home right away. Of course it does hurt that after working up a sweat on the courts, you can walk or jog right down to the awesome beach and take a great swim. Perfect! Thank you.
Beautiful tennis center and courts overlooking the ocean. The Mauna Kea Resort boasts the finest beach. The staff is very friendly. Great for families or adults. Brad did a great job teaching my adult children ages 20 and 23. He had them playing games with competent strokes after six days of lessons. He is very clear and direct with his instruction. He challenged them while making it fun. My wife also liked him a lot.

We go every year. 12 courts on the Ocean. can’t get any better than this. Whales and dolphins jumping in season! The staff is very good. You get 2 jugs of ice water, one wiith lemon, a vase with flowers in it and towels all brought to your table in the shade. This is a beautiful tennis club situated on the coast of the blue waters of Kauna’oa Bay. Tennis clinics and private lessons are offered every day by engaging pros and the Sunday mixed doubles round robin was loads of fun. I will make this a return experience.
The Seaside Tennis at Mauna Kea Beach Resort is a gem! All across the board — ocean setting, shop staff, pro’s, accessibility, ease of play — all outstanding. We’ve never found anything like it. If you’re looking for flashy and slick, this is not your place. But if you want good old fashioned tennis, authentic Hawaii, old school pro’s all in the most breathtaking setting — you’ll love it.
The 9am tennis clinics at the Mauna Kea are outstanding. The pros are great at giving a great clinic, no matter the group size or the varying levels of players. My husband and I have done clinics and private lessons with Brad for the past four years and always look forward to his fun and helpful coaching style. All of the pros are terrific. If you’re staying at the hotel or nearby, this is the clinic to try!
Without a doubt, the professional tennis pro team at this hotel, and its setting is outstanding! You can’t go wrong with the setting if you are going to book a court for your own game, or if you want to be put into a game, or a clinic, or even if you want to take a lesson: the level of professionalism is tops and worth every dollar. We had the best time! The coaches are the best. So friendly and give individual attention to each child. They instantly know your child’s strengths and build on it. The instruction is communicated well. Everyone who works there are beyond friendly and personable. We will come back and wish we lived here to see them all the time. Thank you for a great tennis! My son who is 3 loves tennis and played in the program.
Wayne at the Mauna Kea tennis courts was beyond belief. My kids came in without any tennis experience and after only like five lessons they’ve improved an extraordinary amount. The kids loved him too.
It was a first trip to the Big Island in more than 20 years; in the past, we had stayed at the Orchid Mauna Lani (now the Fairmont). This time, we stayed at the Hapuna Beach Resort and were very pleased that its sister property, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, had a tennis complex with guest signing privileges. Makes it so easy. We met three of the four women in the pro shop — Cheryl, Monica and Myrish are all enthusiastic and friendly, willing to help with whatever is needed, whether reserving court time, lessons, match play, or simply answering questions about the facility, the hotel or the area in general. The 11 courts are in a beautiful setting right next to the ocean. Just blame any missed ball on looking at the scenery! It’s a plausible excuse here. We worked with pro Brad Karen twice during our stay. He’s the consummate resort pro, working on whatever part of your game you want and not trying to tweak everything about your shot just enough to mess it up (that’s not what vacation is for!). Any change he suggested was minor and truly a fix to a bad habit, not making your stroke “his way.” Since we had just returned to tennis shortly before the trip, we did not ask them to set us up for match play or participate in any clinics, but those options are available. The biggest negative was that I really wasn’t enamored with the clothing selections in the pro shop. I have purchased virtually every tennis outfit I own on vacation and thought I’d be doing the same thing this trip, but I left empty-handed. As with any stay on Hawaii, be prepared for year-round humidity and drink lots of water. If you can adjust to the weather, you’ll have a grand time here. We’re looking forward to returning many times in the future! By the way, if you’re looking for a place to have dinner, the hotel’s Manta restaurant was wonderful.

The tennis center is located on a beautiful piece of land with gorgeous ocean views and refreshing ocean breezes. Our 4 year old daughter had a lesson with Coach Brad, and she was thrilled. Brad was super engaging, encouraging and had her seeing improvement within 30 minutes. She had such a great time, she asked to have another lesson the very next morning. The same day as her lesson, the center was hosting a junior state championship, but it did not interfere with the tennis lessons and everything seemed to be moving along seamlessly. We could not have had a better experience. Thank you!
The facilities are wonderful! Unheard of location for the tennis courts right by the water. The staff is very friendly, ethical, helpful. The pro shop is great! The only disappointment is that the tournaments are getting less attended by players from out of the state Over 35 years ago. we stated playing both tournaments one in April one in September. Now the April one has been cancelled do to poor attendance. Last year the September one was attended mostly by locals. I feel the lack of attendance is that the old pro Jay Paulson advertised, sent invitations and entry forms.. The new one does none of those things. Friends that used to attend said they thought it wasn’t done any more as they did not get an an entry form or saw anything on the tennis magazines. I strongly suggest at least sending out entry forms and advertise on their web site.. . It is a great opportunity for good tennis, hotel lodgings ( reduced room rates and amenities for players) and terrific getaway!
Tennis facility and instruction is world class. Wayne worked with our six year old son who had never played, and our son said the best part of his vacation was tennis. The ocean-side courts are spectacular and I literally can’t imagine a better place to learn and play.
The Seaside Tennis club at the Mauna Kea Beach Resort is spectacular. We were welcomed by friendly and accommodating staff, who brought cold water and scented towels – a very nice touch during the heat of summer in Hawaii. The setting is gorgeous as the courts are right next to the ocean. The pictures do not do it justice! The courts were in excellent shape. We borrowed rackets and a ball hopper, which was handy. The best part is we were able to play with our 6-year old son. The Director of Tennis, Craig Pautler, chatted with us and gave our son treats and even a medal! Apparently, during whale season, you can see the whales from the court – where else can you do that?!? Everyone was friendly and nice, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time at this wonderful facility!
Craig Pautler runs a wonderful tennis center with fun to be had by any age or tennis ability. The courts desperately need to be re-done at the foundation level. Tennis balls are often deflected due to cracks in the court surface and some courts are unplayable. The fences and wind screens need to be replaced. The setting is exceptional and quite beautiful and unlike almost any other resort. The facilities are showing their age and could use some TLC. However, the staff makes the experience as pleasant as possible.
I have enjoyed visiting Mauna Kea, as it was my first time visiting, I especially enjoyed playing tennis as it was my favorite sport to play. During, my stay at Mauna Kea I have experienced the Hawaiian cultural dance and food. The highlight of my stay was that I was able to play tennis every day with amazing coaches to help me improve my tennis skills. I have participated in tennis tournaments such as the “Social Round Robin”. The members, staff and the coaches were very nice to me. The members always gave me tips on how to predict the opposition by looking at how much space is available on my side of the court and after the members invited my family to a barbeque that they hosted. Overall, I had an outstanding experience at Mauna Kea. I look forward to visiting Mauna Kea next year.
When you combine the sound of waves crashing onto the beach and endless views from every court, you have a world class tennis experience. Mine was made even better when introducing my oldest daughter (5) to the game of tennis for the first time in Hawaii. Wayne was an incredible instructor for our daughter and the group of kids she played with all week. She will never forget her first time on a tennis court and it’s a big thanks to the world class treatment at Mauna Kea Tennis.
We have vacationed several times a year since 2104, always having our grandchildren enrolled in lessons and clinics with all four pros. Without exception our grandkids (ages now 10-14), look forward to their hours of tennis, are proud of their improvement and have learned to love a lifelong game. All four teaching pros have amazing reservoirs of patience, humor and a surplus of of techniques for improving skills all appropriate to the level of their tennis students.
We spent 12 days at Mauna Kea in June and July of 2018. Most of those days our boys, ages 12 and 15, participated in the junior tennis clinics with Wayne Barnes. What an amazing and helpful experience. Our boys had such a great time learning the game from a true professional in Mr. Barnes. He made the experience very fun, however they improved greatly during their time with him. I can’t imagine a better preparatory venue and teaching professionals than we witnessed at Mauna Kea. My wife and I also participated in some of the adult tennis clinics and were equally impressed with the fun, competition and training. I would highly recommend this facility to families and tennis enthusiasts. The facility and the setting are second to none. The views are amazing and the courts and related facilities are professionally maintained. Again – I was extremely pleased with the entire experience and highly recommend Mauna Kea’s Seaside Tennis Club.
Amazing and uncrowded scenic courts with friendly staff!
We go to this resort every year. We are a family of four tennis players. My girls age 11, and 14 love playing here. The staff is awesome, very accommodating, and knowledgeable. Wayne, Hector and Brad are excellent pros and very knowledgeable. My girls just adore Wayne! The ladies in the pro shop are awesome as well, making sure our every need is taken care of. The facility is the best tennis facility I have ever been to. Between the staff and the facility, it’s simly heavenly to go there for a tennis vacation. What a gem!
We come to Mauna Kea every year and our children adore the tennis programs. They love Craig and Dan and Hector. They are amazing coaches and take the time to make our kids feel important. Our kids always improve their skills before we leave. We think the courts and program here at the Mauna Kea are the best anywhere. We look forward to our return next year.
I have been coming to Mauna Kea Beach for 40 years on and off. I always look forward to playing tennis on their courts. Last year my grandchildren took the tennis camp and I enjoyed watching them learn to love tennis as much as I do. Some of the same pros are still teaching lessons which is a testiment to the longevity of the tennis program. I always like to pick up something from the pro shop too! I’m planning on taking a lessson in January when I come back to visit.
Mauna Kea is absolutely one the most beautiful tennis resorts in the world! We have traveled all over the world to many beautiful resorts, and none compare to the ocean view you have adjacent to the Mauna Kea courts! The oceanfront location and natural beauty surrounding the facility is something you just can’t find elsewhere these days. Also, the tennis director is the best and teaching staff is amazing – very friendly, experienced, helpful, and kind!!
NOTHING like it ANYWHERE! Absolutely BEAUTIFUL, including the sunsets over the ocean views, which are visible from all the courts. And the sound of the Pacific waves washing ashore. Where can you play tennis and watch whales between shots? Lovely staff and old world service! Incredible enthusiasm from wonderful Coaches, and outstanding Children’s camps! Wayne Barnes (Our son’s instructor) is an amazing Coach who your children will love! He’s wonderful with children and an inspiration!

The facilities at Mauna Kea are unparalleled. Gorgeous ocean views and terrific staff. I had five days of lessons with Hector Mendoza. This is the second time I worked with him and can’t wait to come back. I always learn so much. The resort is our favorite in Hawaii with the best beach.
The Mauna Kea Seaside Tennis Resort is the most beautiful facility and ocean view I have ever seen. The service from their staff is outstanding and teaching pros do a fantastic job instructing at all levels. We have gone several years in a row and hope to continue each year enjoying this wonderful tennis resort.

Great place to visit
This is a beautiful tennis club! The courts are in excellent condition, and the staff is friendly, warm and welcoming. There are plenty of courts so we had no problem reserving courts for when we wanted to play. The only “problem” is the stunning view of the ocean, and the pretty landscaping surrounding the courts. It’s easy to get distracted by such beauty!
This resort is phenomenal and the best part is that they make everyone feel welcomed. Has all the potential to be snobby and pretentious. However, it is the exact opposite. Everyone is down to earth and whatever your skill level or background, there is always a feeling of being welcomed. Brad and Hector are both excellent teaching pros and the members are extremely friendly and open to including you in their games.
Both my wife and I are no longer playing tennis, but our four grandkids (age 8-13) took lessons and attended daily clinics for nearly three weeks. Because the Mauna Kea has such amazing activities/facilities for the kids, there was only one arranged match although the four kids played together in the late afternoon several times; in all cases the staff went out of its way to make the tennis events highly successful. The tennis professional are especially skilled at motivating kids while providing expert tennis instruction. Our kids can’t wait to get to the court every day.
The Mauna Kea Resort is the best location ever! We did not take any lessons because we had a group of 6 who all played tennis. We were given all of the court time we needed and the staff was very responsive. They brought us towels and water and lots of refills.
I am rapidly closing in on 70 yrs. old (?), and played competitive tennis most of my teenage & adult life until disc problems & knee surgery discouraged me from playing the last 7 years… I have missed the game and the exercise terribly, and while vacationing at Mauna Kea, I got it in my head to arrange a 30 minute “rally” with Wayne Barnes, the pro at Mauna Kea. What a great guy, and what a great setting ! It was a “meaningful” muscle memory bonanza..The key was to have fun, and enjoy something special that I had done most of my life. And I did, thanks to Wayne, a super positive human being, very empathetic to my story. I plan on getting back to tennis on a regular, realistic schedule..Thanks Wayne !!
This place is AMAZING!!!. I have been to 7 of your top 100 tennis resorts and this one beats them all. Unbelievably friendly, charismatic, and detail oriented staff. Cheryl, Myrish, and the rest of the girls who schedule do a great job, with followup calls when plans changed! They are so on top of this clubs functions that it was very reassuring to me before we came we would have great tennis. They got me a fun match with either a local or visitor every day I asked. My son a top 40 in his USTA region worked with pros and got quality matches with other traveling juniors. You will never find more beautiful court situation. Right on the blue ( and I mean BLUE) pacific ocean yet protected from wind by the most amazing tropical fragrant landscaping. They bring you ice cold water with lemon and ICE TOWELS!! The resorts of Mauna Kea and Hapuna Beach Princess, and both resort guests can use facility, are amazing for all you would expect out of elegant high quality Hawaiin hotels with the most prime locations. Both have rare (on the big island) sand beaches that are amazing. A scenic lava trail connects the 2 resorts….and by virtue of its location on the island it virtually NEVER rains!! There is truely no category for how beautiful and tranquil this setting is. Thanks to pro Wayne for connecting us with fun teens pro/partners. Your enthusiasm is contagious. I watched him with other folks and can tell he is that rare individual who is good with little kids, junior aspirers, older men and women. He talked with my son for a half hour after their training….about tennis and life, he loved that. Wayne really cares about this gem of a place and the members and guests who play there. Now I am not a golfer but this apparently is also a top resort for golf and seeing the layout and how it sits on beautiful bluffs above the ocean I thought about it. But for tennis ….this is my happy place! Thanks again Wayne, and staff, we can’t wait to come back!!!

The tennis professional and programs at Mauna Kea are exceptional in every respect. Besides being the most gorgeous setting in all of Hawaii, they offer wonderful, friendly and professional instruction for the whole family. It really is a special place. I have noticed that many resorts have scaled back their tennis or have even moved there tennis courts off site. This is unfortunate on many levels. For our family we come to Mauna Kea because the tennis so convenient. Craig, Brad, Dan and Hector are just wonderful too. You just can’t find this kind of tennis program at any old resort. We love it here and will continue to come back each year because of the facility and the wonderful tennis programs.
Have gone to Mauna Kea for decades and it feels like going home. The tennis pros are truly professionals and we have hit with them for years. Love that there is not a new set of pros every year that you have to get to know. Craig, Brad, and Hector are friendly, fun, positive, relaxed, and very skilled, with great ability to just tweak a few things while you are on vacation to improve your game without trying to remake your stroke in 10 days. They are just as good with kids of all ages as they are with adults. Stunning setting next to the ocean!! Love that it is on-site and easy to walk to in the morning. Few places make tennis a pleasant and easy extension of your hotel/resort experience rather than making it another transaction with a third party, without the service and personal attention you get from being a valued guest. A rarity in this regard!! One of the central reasons we love Mauna Kea and continue to return. Hope they never lose it! Very sad to hear they were going to convert 3 courts to homesites. That is a bad, shortsighted decision.

Mauna Kea Tennis. What more can be said for the location with ocean on two sides of the courts. Hard to keep your eye on the ball with such beauty around you. I’ve visited the Mauna Kea properties for more than 10 years and by far–my favorite place. The pros at this facility are long term experts at improving your game. You can’t help but leave a better player. Craig Pautler has assembled a group of pros which span the spectrum of talent. Which ever you select Dan, Brad, Hector, or Wayne you can’t go wrong. We all have our favorites and Hector Mendoza is my preference when going onto the court. Hector quickly analyzes your level of play and then sets out to help you improve weaknesses he sees and strives to make you a better player when you leave the court. Visiting Mauna Kea Tennis is a great experience. I recommend it for anyone wanting to play a game or do the daily clinics.

I took a clinic at the club during my vacation last week. The clinic lead by Hector was excellent. Hector was enthusiastic and provided positive helpful feedback to all eight adults in the clinic. I was particularly impressed with his ability to do so in our relatively diverse group ,in terms of age and playing ability (though all had some tennis experience). I should also mention Cheryl in the pro shop who was warm, efficient and made every effort to make the tennis experience a pleasant one.
Six years in a row coming to Mauna Kea. We go for the beach and the tennis. There is no other complex as beautiful. The pro’s, Craig and Wayne, make us feel like members. A must visit.
It is a wonderful place to play tennis, relaxed if you want to be relaxed and have a good time, more competitive if you want that. Court 11 by the ocean has got to be one of the most beautiful tennis courts in the entire world. Play tennis, then watch the whales when switching sides between games. The weather is warm, but not too warm, and hardly any rain there at all. Try it – you like it. Correct that, try it – you’ll love it.
Fantastic staff – I took lessons from 3 coaches and all of them were very helpful and friendly. I can’t imagine any club that is more beautiful than Mauna Kea. The staff brought ice cold water as well as dry and iced towels to us multiple times during our court reservation. First class treatment!

Seaside Tennis at Mauna Kea Resort was a fantastic experience! Our group included 7 children aging in range from 14-27, plus two sets of parents. The children ranged from inexperienced, to highly competitive, high school and college players. Wayne and his team were unbelievably friendly and accommodating, and catered to our diverse group. They managed to create clinics and round robins that tested the high level players, in addition to building the skills of the less experienced players, all while keeping us together as a group. Since we had a big group and changing interests each day, we ended up rescheduling several times, and coming back looking for extra courts. The team couldn’t have been more flexible and really did a great job of working with us. One member forgot her tennis shoes in NY and they chased up a pair for her to use the week we were there. The first day we were there , we did the regularly scheduled clinic. This was perhaps the only disappointment of the week as the level was a bit low for everyone. We quickly adjusted and asked for private lessons with Wayne, who we observed on an adjoining court. The rest of the week was simply outstanding and on many days we played in the morning, then came back in the afternoon for a group lesson with Wayne just because it was so much fun. Mid week Wayne organized a family round robin tournament for us, including Mauna Kea tennis glasses for the winners, which were fiercely battled for. We highly recommend Wayne and his team for: serious tennis players who want a tune up, high level rec players who want to sharpen skills, as well as beginners who want to develop their game. We will definitely be back and next time will organize our vacation around this fantastic facility. Thanks Wayne for a family vacation we will not forget!
Five days of tropical bliss at Seaside Tennis at Mauna Kea Resort. The location is “on the ocean” and crashing waves greet every volley, lob and serve. The matches organized by the pro shop were perfectly balanced. The clinics were well organized and the pros made the clinics exciting. The pro shop staff are friendly, helpful and truly “service” minded.
Hard to find a better setting than this one. A well-established program that hasn’t diminished with time but has only gotten better. A good mix of local club members and hotel guests. Courts always had activity and all seemed to be enjoying themselves. A group of excellent, dedicated teaching pros are there to assist players of all levels. A place I will visit again as soon as I can.
Seaside Tennis Club at the Mauna Kea Resort has unbelievable views to complement an excellent staff. Craig Pautler runs an exceptional tennis program at this resort club. We return every year for a few weeks and have never been disappointed. Craig is very sociable, has a great eye for stroke technique and sets up matches for my daughter , who is a ranked junior player. The courts are in great condition and every court has ocean views. The club is very active with programs for both hotel guests and local residents.
Played today at 11AM although warm and windy the courts were pretty much free of wind. Two ice cold pitchers of water along with iced towels were brought curtsied by the wonderful staff. The friendliest people work there.
The best tennis facility there is for the tennis courts..the people who run the facility..the tennis coaches….and the membership. They have really good players who they set you up with to play si goes or doubles…. They work hard at filling your request. Everyday they have a clinic …they have afternoon Round Robins… It’s a treat to keep going back to the Mauna Kea to play golf. Just the best
My husband and I immensely enjoy playing tennis at the Mauna Kea. The setting directly on the Ocean Front is Idyllic, one of the most breath taking settings in the World. The staff is super friendly and helpful and try to cater to all of our needs. It is also a very lively and fun environment with many players of all ages and skill level. We both would highly recommend staying and playing at the Mauna Kea.
Our 13 year old son came home from summer camp and announced that he was going to be playing tennis instead of baseball, where he had done very well. He loved the responsibility of getting the ball in his hands for every play, for owning the wins and losses himself. That spring we went to Mauna Kea in Hawaii during the spring break prior to tennis season to dust off the East Coast wintery cobwebs and get back into the swing of things. The teaching staff there was phenomenal. Our son took a lesson every day with Craig, who worked with him on his technique as well as the mental aspects of the game. He arranged games with local tennis players, and even invited him to play in a round robin tournament. It was fantastic to be able to get instruction in the morning and to have match play in the early evenings. In between there was golf, snorkeling, paddle boarding, whale watching and reading. In addition to our son’s tennis instruction, I (mother), too, played in the morning clinics. The focus was on doubles play and encouraging us all to be more assertive in our net play. I am neither horrible nor terrific, as were the others in the clinic. It was a fun and pleasant start to the mornings. And the staff was always there with a pitcher of ice cold water and a towel just when you needed it. The location is spectacular. The resort is a favorite of the whole family. We spent three spring vacations at the resort. We have plans to return again and again.
Director and staff at Seaside are the best. Where else can you get a friendly welcome from the director and pickup your conversation right where you left it a year ago? Craig is truly great. The welcoming hospitality of Monica and Cheryl keep us coming back year after year.
We have been coming to the Mauna Kea for four years, specifically for the amazing youth tennis program. Tennis pros Wayne and Craig create such a positive, fun and productive tennis experience for my two boys, ages 7 and 9. The kids have a ball and eagerly participate in clinics with Wayne and private or semi-private lessons with both Wayne and Craig. They help the kids learn and improve on the court. These coaches nurture and grow the kids’ enthusiasm for tennis. Wayne and Craig are so thoughtful, positive, and encouraging. My boys have a BLAST on the courts at the Mauna Kea. Other tennis pros include Hector, Dan and Brad — they too at times have worked with my kids and have also provided great tennis instruction with positive coaching and tennis JOY. The tennis courts are nested adjacent to the ocean, with shade provided by gorgeous, well maintain trees and tropical plants. One can see and hear the white water for the ocean waves in the background. While the environment at the Mauna Kea tennis courts is spectacular, and all the bells and whistles of a super fancy resort — yet the environment is so friendly, open and relaxed. It is a gift to be able to participate in the Mauna Kea tennis program!
My husband I unfortunately no longer play tennis so the following comments are based on the phenomenal enthusiasm of my son and four grandkids who weep when they leave and whoop when they arrive. They take lessons, clinics, play in “adult round robin” events and simply “play” on their own. This means that all our comments are based their astonishing experiences with tennis at the Mauna Kea.
My four grandkids and son all weep on leaving the Mauna Kea and will take lessons, clinics and as often as possible each day, starting as early as possible. Especially pleasing was the staff’s willingness to teach a “family” clinic and arrange for the youngsters to play in with established “adult” groups. We are hardly home and the kids clamor Coaches Craig and Wayne but love all five!
To say that the Mauna Kea is one of my favorite places in the world would be an understatement! I visited last summer with my daughter for a wedding and my past memories of the resort we all met and exceeded. The tennis garden is exactly that, one of the most picturesque places to play on the planet! My daughter and I enjoyed the courts and especially Craig Pautler’s hospitality. After all, the pro is the personality of the property!
Best tennis resort ever.
Our family used the Tennis Program for our two children who absolutely loved the experience. The staff are outstanding. They are patient, kind and incredible coaches. They continue to inspire our children. This experience is always a highlight for our kids. I highly recommend this tennis program, our kids can’t wait to go back.
This tennis facility is tops in all of our travels. Great staff , well kept courts and playing next to the beach was amazing. Plan to finish play at sunset and enjoy the ocean view. We went with a group and all of us hold great memories.
The ocean views from the courts are breathtaking. I have played in the early evening listening to live Hawaiian music from the lawn behind the courts and watching the ocean court side. It is nothing short of magical.
The Mauna Kea Beach Resort is the most fabulous tennis vacation spot we have been to. We have been to many,, but the staff,, tennis courts ,, lovely setting,, is specatular to any tennis adventurer. To play tennis along the sea with breathtaking views of visiting whales, dolphins is hard to concentrate on ones tennis game. Craig and his staff are wonderful to be on the courts with . After a tough session you get to jump into the ocean,, and enjoy the ambiance of Hawaii. Need it say more???? One of the best in the world and close to us too!!!!
The three most important things we require when we go on vacation are: Great Tennis facilities, amazing beach/ocean, and romantic location. The Mauna Kea has it all, but in our opinion, the tennis is definitely the highlight of our vacation. We’ve been going to the Mauna Kea two to three times a year for over a decade. We are USTA 4.5 players and when we make our reservations to go to the Mauna Kea we e-mail Craig to let him know when we are coming and Craig and his staff make arrangements for us to play every morning with either resort guests or local members/residents. Our matches are always fun and competitive and we have very much enjoyed getting to know some of the residents. The tennis courts are located in one of the most beautiful places in the world – the ocean view court being our favorite. Last time we were there it was difficult to not be distracted by the whales that were swimming past us.
The tennis facility at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is by far and away the most amazing tennis center in the world. And I can say that having played and traveled globally for tennis. The courts are directly on the ocean, only a small cliff separates you and the ball from the crashing waves below. The courts themselves are always in the best shape. In fact, I’ve visited once a year for the past 18 years, and I’ve never thought to myself that the courts needed to be resurfaced, they are impeccably maintained. The staff too makes it all the more welcoming. And it truly is the little things that push it over the edge, cold water, shade on the courts for players and spectators, ice cold towels waiting for you at the change overs. Couldn’t be better as every thing you could imagine is covered! A huge congratulations to Craig and his team for creating an unsurpassed tennis experience!
Fantastic location right on the ocean. Watch the whales go by and play tennis on 11 great courts. Instructors friendly, courteous and my wife and I have seen our tennis game improve significantly. Visit here at least 4 times a year from NYC. Weather perfect virtually all the time. Games can easily be arranged by staff. Resort is absolutely stunning!
Fabulous location right along the ocean! Staff is friendly and welcoming providing great service. Facilities are very accommodating. We love to play at Mauna Kea!
The Tennis at the Seaside Tennis Facility at the Mauna Kea Beach Resort is fabulous. From the stunning seaside tennis courts to the impeccable service provided by the professional staff, this resort is a must for any tennis player. The front desk staff does an outstanding job of match making for hotel guests. The club membership represents all levels of tennis well. The local club members are friendly and very willing to have guests join their groups. Craig Paulter, the Director of Tennis, has made this resort the hub for Big Island Tennis. The staff makes sure you are never short on fresh, cold water and towels at your court. They also work hard to make sure you are happy with the quality of tennis you are getting at the Seaside Tennis Club. If you are visiting the Big Island in the winter, court eleven is where you want to be. It is not uncommon for your match to be delayed so you can watch the humpback whales just beyond your court! Once you have experienced the Mauna Kea Resort, you will not be able to wait for your return visit.
It was our first tennis entered vacation (we are 3.0 and 3.5 level players), and we absolutely loved it. The staff were very friendly and we learned an incredible amount in a short period of time. Because it is an upscale resort, we were worried that perhaps the staff/and or other players would be “stuck up”, however this was not the case. Everyone was down to earth, helpful and accommodating. Pretty mazing to be able to play tennis right next to the ocean as well. They kept us well hydrated with cold iceboater delivered to the courts and we attended the clinic every morning. If the clinic was full (8 people) we did drills which were fun and engaging, with 3 or 4 in the clinic the instructor was very good at one to one and group skills development. We will start saving for our next rip to this tennis resort!
The Tennis club at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel comprises ten excellently maintained hard courts right by the ocean. The pros, lead by Craig Pautler, are friendly and excellent teachers who make the tennis, at whatever level, fun and challenging. My wife and I spent the last week there with the original intention of maybe hitting a few balls once or twice. My wife is a beginner and I used to be a decent player but hadn’t played for nearly 20 years. One lesson there had us coming back for more every day. My wife is now able to rally with steady and satisfying ground and approach shots and I am now fully conscious of all the bad habits I have to overcome to return to form. It is no exaggeration to say that our tennis experience made our stay at Mauna Kea one of the best vacations we’ve ever had and now we are already planning and dreaming about our next trip. We can’t wait to play more tennis there. Thank you Craig and all your staff.
Tennis at Maune Kea is a spectacular resort tennis experience. The clinic offered each morning was excellent for all skill levels. It was a high spot of our stay. Bravo! the courts and overall ambience of the tennis center and staff is absolutely top notch

Excellent facility but the coaches are fantastic. If you have a kid who is thinking of playing this is the place for your first introduction b/c Craig Pautler and team are tremendous and make the experience really fun! They understand that tennis is a lifelong sport and that you need to love it or you will not make it. They do a nice job wrapping in the fundamental aspects in digestable bites for children and are capable of ramping the subject matter at a pace that matches the child’s abilities and maturity. the only negative would be that on a windy day it can be a little windy 🙂

The Mauna Kea Tennis Club is truly exceptional. The views are no doubt the best in the world. Where else can you watch whales breech while playing tennis? The coaches are extremely experienced and challenging while encouraging players at all levels. True professionals. There are many activities to join in including clinics, individual lessons and doubles play. The non-coaching staff is also uniquely gracious. They are experts at arranging games with locals and other guests, and always deliver water and towels with a smile. The leadership of Craig Pautler is evident throughout. He is warm and friendly, while maintaining the high standards that the clientele of this facility demands. This makes for an exceptional tennis experience. Wherever in the world I get a chance to play, I cannot help but compare it to the Mauna Kea and the Mauna Kea always wins!

What could be more ideal than tennis at MKB? Of all the resorts we have been to, MKB is the most outstanding – tennis pro, professionalism, friendliness, lessons, courts, and the ocean views.
Courts are fantastic with some positioned right on the ocean. Great quality surfaces and good wind protection. The tennis facility feels like it is a cornerstone of the resort not an afterthought. Great clubhouse, friendly staff, a good variety of players and an excellent teaching staff. My shout out to Dan. I had 2 lessons and had one match arranged and both were fun. Match was competitive.
Amazing! My husband and I have been here twice, and we’ll be back again. First of all, the venue is like no other in the world for tennis. Sure, they put great golf courses on the water, but usually, tennis courts are an afterthought, in some, unused parking lot. The courts are right on the water, and it’s a wonderful and spectacular distraction! Secondly, the pros are great! Craig Paulter runs great team! We loved Dan! With a week of lessons, my game play skyrocketed! We’ve recommended this to many of our friends, and a few have actually taken lessons from Dan, as well. They loved it! We’ll be back!
WOW! Where do I begin??? First, it is the MOST PICTURESQUE facility I have ever seen, and I have played all over the planet. Playing tennis just yards away from the Pacific Ocean (in full view from most courts) is simply awesome. Between November and March, you can see whales from the courts! Unbelievable. The tennis instructions are simply fantastic. Over a period of two weeks, we worked with two instructors, finally settling on one in particular that matched our goals. Dan was simply terrific. His instructions improved our games tremendously. We both inched up at least a half level; me from a 4 to 4.5 and my wife from a 3 to a 3.5. Matching for games is also great. They are very good at finding matches for you. The place is simply one of the best places on the planet. Hands down. Beautiful location, quality instructions and great player-matching. What else can you ask for?
