The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel has what even a local cab driver describes as “the best beach on the island.” Kauna’oa Bay is a long crescent of white sand, fringed with obligatory palm trees, and follows the outline of a shallow cove anchored by lava-rock promontories. The hotel sits atop one of those rocky outcrops in a garden of exotic flowers and trees, surrounded by Asian and Pacific sculptures from the Laurence S. Rockefeller collection. The facility is located off to one side of the terraced hillside and hosts 9 tennis and 8 pickle-ball courts, the lowest tennis court is so close to the sea that you can hear the sound of waves breaking on the black-lava rocks.
Tennis almost never snags such prime real estate, and several years ago previous tennis director committed the unthinkable act of taking a chainsaw to some of the tennis complex’s exuberant foliage, which goes wild in the tropical heat and fertile soil, in order to open up those sea views. If that requires coping with a bit more wind on some days, it seems like a reasonable trade off since it means being able to gaze at the ocean at changeovers and perhaps spot a whale sounding just offshore.
Though now owned and managed by Prince Resorts Hawaii, the hotel was an early foray by Laurance S. Rockefeller into luxury resort development. Prior to building the resort, he looked at a black lava rock desert 25 miles north of the town of Kailua-Kona and envisaged a luxury golf and tennis resort. Everyone thought he was crazy; he proved them wrong by attracting a wealthy international clientele, who actually liked the fact that there were no telephones or televisions. As one of the first RockResorts, Mauna Kea became a synonym for the ultimate resort vacation.
Both the traveling public and the resort have changed over the intervening decades, and the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel shares this coast with more than half a dozen resorts, all of them carved out of black lava rock. Few of them afford a more beautiful setting for tennis or have as much on-court activity, a fact reflected in its consistent Top 100 rating in the list we compile annually based on vacationer reviews.
Tennis director Craig Pautler is actually in his second stint overseeing this tennis operation. Although his return in 2004 was not quite so dramatic as an eruption of the Kilauea Volcano at the southern end of the island, it did alter the Hawaiian resort tennis landscape. Pautler, who was there in 1977-82 before moving next door to the Mauna Lani and then up to his daughters’ former prep school in Waimea, lives and breathes customer service. Stroll through the glass doors of the pro shop, and you’ll be greeted by someone who seems genuinely thrilled that you came and will ask, almost without fail, “Can we get you a game?” or otherwise find out about your tennis needs.
The weekly calendar is a blend of private instruction, clinics and social and competitive round robins, along with kids’ programs during the summers and busy holiday periods and a ball machine for the hard core who just want to hone strokes. What brings avid players back year after year, however, is the tirelessly attentive tennis staff, who understand how important it can be just to play. They not only put together singles, doubles, or mixed doubles matches, often drawing on their own stable of active local members, but they also deliver a continual supply of towels and ice water throughout your time on court.an we get you a game?” or otherwise find out about your tennis needs.
Since his return, Pautler has revitalized the program and beautified the complex and constantly worked to keep make improvements. Courts are resurfaced regularly on a rotating basis, old furniture is replaced, structures painted. It took him just over a year to take Mauna Kea to the No. 1 position among Hawaii’s tennis resorts, but from his perspective staying ahead of the competition requires continual attention to every aspect of the tennis experience, from keeping the courts clean (he and his pros, not the landscaping staff, personally wash every court every few weeks because that way they’re more likely to notice other things needing attention) to making sure every guest’s needs are met and more. With him back on court, this entire stretch of the Kohala Coast—and the tennis resorts on the rest of the Hawaiian Islands for that matter—once again have a working model of superlative service.
Off Court
Beach: A perfect crescent of beach, generally regarded as one of the finest resort beaches in the Hawaii, lines the Kauna’oa Bay immediately below the hotel.
Golf Courses: Robert Trent Jones, Sr. designed the 18-hole Mauna Kea Golf Course, which ranks among the finest in Hawaii. It is characterized by elevation changes, large undulating greens, and strategically situated bunkers. Its third hole, which borders an oceanfront inlet lined with lava rock, is so stunning that it’s often chosen as the site for weddings. Guests also have access to the nearby Hapuna Golf Course, which was designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay and won awards for its environmental sensitivity. It begins near the shore and climbs to 700 feet above sea level.
Mauna Kea’s fitness center consists of two rooms, one paneled with wood and filled with Cardio equipment and dumbbells, the other lined with mirrors and furnished with a dozen LifeFitness stations. The boutique spa is nearby, though rather than have your treatments in rooms there, you can just as easily book them for locations at the Tennis Garden, a spot beneath mesquite-like kiawe trees right along the ocean, or in your own room.
Children's programs: The resort’s children’s program entertains kids ages 5-12 year-round and focuses on outdoor activities as much as possible, utilizing both the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and nearby sister property, The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort. The staff at Seaside Tennis Club also expands junior tennis offerings during major holidays and summers.
Dining: Manta takes full advantage of its views of the gardens and sea on Manta Point for a menu that focuses on locally available seafood, beef, lamb, and vegetables prepared in an exhibition kitchen. Manta offers an extensive wine list that has won Wine Spectator Awards. Manta is complemented by the Copper Bar, now newly transformed with new art and a skylight but with the same views of the bay and a menu of craft beers, artisanal cocktails, tapas, entrées and sweets.

Besides being the most gorgeous setting in all of Hawaii, they offer wonderful, friendly and professional instruction for the whole family. It really is a special place. I have noticed that many resorts have scaled back their tennis or have even moved there tennis courts off site. This is unfortunate on many levels. For our family we come to Mauna Kea because the tennis so convenient. Craig, Brad, Dan and Hector are just wonderful too. You just can’t find this kind of tennis program at any old resort. We love it here and will continue to come back each year because of the facility and the wonderful tennis programs.

Have gone to Mauna Kea for decades and it feels like going home. The tennis pros are truly professionals and we have hit with them for years. Love that there is not a new set of pros every year that you have to get to know. Craig, Brad, and Hector are friendly, fun, positive, relaxed, and very skilled, with great ability to just tweak a few things while you are on vacation to improve your game without trying to remake your stroke in 10 days. They are just as good with kids of all ages as they are with adults. Stunning setting next to the ocean!! Love that it is on-site and easy to walk to in the morning. Few places make tennis a pleasant and easy extension of your hotel/resort experience rather than making it another transaction with a third party, without the service and personal attention you get from being a valued guest. Mauna Kea Tennis. What more can be said for the location with ocean on two sides of the courts. Hard to keep your eye on the ball with such beauty around you. I’ve visited the Mauna Kea properties for more than 10 years and by far–my favorite place. The pros at this facility are long term experts at improving your game. You can’t help but leave a better player. Craig Pautler has assembled a group of pros which span the spectrum of talent. Which ever you select Dan, Brad, Hector, or Wayne you can’t go wrong. We all have our favorites and Hector Mendoza is my preference when going onto the court. Hector quickly analyzes your level of play and then sets out to help you improve weaknesses he sees and strives to make you a better player when you leave the court. Visiting Mauna Kea Tennis is a great experience. I recommend it for anyone wanting to play a game or do the daily clinics.

I took a clinic at the club during my vacation last week. The clinic lead by Hector was excellent. Hector was enthusiastic and provided positive helpful feedback to all eight adults in the clinic. I was particularly impressed with his ability to do so in our relatively diverse group ,in terms of age and playing ability (though all had some tennis experience). I should also mention Cheryl in the pro shop who was warm, efficient and made every effort to make the tennis experience a pleasant one.

It is a wonderful place to play tennis, relaxed if you want to be relaxed and have a good time, more competitive if you want that. Court 11 by the ocean has got to be one of the most beautiful tennis courts in the entire world. Play tennis, then watch the whales when switching sides between games. The weather is warm, but not too warm, and hardly any rain there at all. Try it – you like it. Correct that, try it – you’ll love it.

Seaside Tennis at Mauna Kea Resort was a fantastic experience! Our group included 7 children aging in range from 14-27, plus two sets of parents. The children ranged from inexperienced, to highly competitive, high school and college players. Wayne and his team were unbelievably friendly and accommodating, and catered to our diverse group. They managed to create clinics and round robins that tested the high level players, in addition to building the skills of the less experienced players, all while keeping us together as a group. Since we had a big group and changing interests each day, we ended up rescheduling several times, and coming back looking for extra courts. The team couldn’t have been more flexible and really did a great job of working with us. One member forgot her tennis shoes in NY and they chased up a pair for her to use the week we were there. The first day we were there , we did the regularly scheduled clinic. This was perhaps the only disappointment of the week as the level was a bit low for everyone. We quickly adjusted and asked for private lessons with Wayne, who we observed on an adjoining court. The rest of the week was simply outstanding and on many days we played in the morning, then came back in the afternoon for a group lesson with Wayne just because it was so much fun. Mid week Wayne organized a family round robin tournament for us, including Mauna Kea tennis glasses for the winners, which were fiercely battled for. We highly recommend Wayne and his team for: serious tennis players who want a tune up, high level rec players who want to sharpen skills, as well as beginners who want to develop their game. We will definitely be back and next time will organize our vacation around this fantastic facility. Thanks Wayne for a family vacation we will not forget!

The matches organized by the pro shop were perfectly balanced. The clinics were well organized and the pros made the clinics exciting. Hard to find a better setting than this one. A well-established program that hasn’t diminished with time but has only gotten better. A good mix of local club members and hotel guests. Courts always had activity and all seemed to be enjoying themselves. A group of excellent, dedicated teaching pros are there to assist players of all levels. My husband and I immensely enjoy playing tennis at the Mauna Kea. The setting directly on the Ocean Front is Idyllic, one of the most breath taking settings in the World. Our 13 year old son came home from summer camp and announced that he was going to be playing tennis instead of baseball, where he had done very well. He loved the responsibility of getting the ball in his hands for every play, for owning the wins and losses himself. That spring we went to Mauna Kea in Hawaii during the spring break prior to tennis season to dust off the East Coast wintery cobwebs and get back into the swing of things. The teaching staff there was phenomenal. Our son took a lesson every day with Craig, who worked with him on his technique as well as the mental aspects of the game. He arranged games with local tennis players, and even invited him to play in a round robin tournament. It was fantastic to be able to get instruction in the morning and to have match play in the early evenings. In between there was golf, snorkeling, paddle boarding, whale watching and reading. In addition to our son’s tennis instruction, I (mother), too, played in the morning clinics. The focus was on doubles play and encouraging us all to be more assertive in our net play. I am neither horrible nor terrific, as were the others in the clinic. It was a fun and pleasant start to the mornings. And the staff was always there with a pitcher of ice cold water and a towel just when you needed it. The location is spectacular. The resort is a favorite of the whole family. We spent three spring vacations at the resort. We have plans to return again and again.

We have been coming to the Mauna Kea for four years, specifically for the amazing youth tennis program. Tennis pros Wayne and Craig create such a positive, fun and productive tennis experience for my two boys, ages 7 and 9. The kids have a ball and eagerly participate in clinics with Wayne and private or semi-private lessons with both Wayne and Craig. They help the kids learn and improve on the court. These coaches nurture and grow the kids’ enthusiasm for tennis. Wayne and Craig are so thoughtful, positive, and encouraging. My boys have a BLAST on the courts at the Mauna Kea. Other tennis pros include Hector, Dan and Brad — they too at times have worked with my kids and have also provided great tennis instruction with positive coaching and tennis JOY. The tennis courts are nested adjacent to the ocean, with shade provided by gorgeous, well maintain trees and tropical plants. One can see and hear the white water for the ocean waves in the background. While the environment at the Mauna Kea tennis courts is spectacular, and all the bells and whistles of a super fancy resort — yet the environment is so friendly, open and relaxed. It is a gift to be able to participate in the Mauna Kea tennis program!

The three most important things we require when we go on vacation are: Great Tennis facilities, amazing beach/ocean, and romantic location. The Mauna Kea has it all, but in our opinion, the tennis is definitely the highlight of our vacation. We’ve been going to the Mauna Kea two to three times a year for over a decade. We are USTA 4.5 players and when we make our reservations to go to the Mauna Kea we e-mail Craig to let him know when we are coming and Craig and his staff make arrangements for us to play every morning with either resort guests or local members/residents. Our matches are always fun and competitive and we have very much enjoyed getting to know some of the residents. The tennis courts are located in one of the most beautiful places in the world – the ocean view court being our favorite. Last time we were there it was difficult to not be distracted by the whales that were swimming past us.

The tennis facility at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is by far and away the most amazing tennis center in the world. And I can say that having played and traveled globally for tennis. The courts are directly on the ocean, only a small cliff separates you and the ball from the crashing waves below. The courts themselves are always in the best shape. In fact, I’ve visited once a year for the past 18 years, and I’ve never thought to myself that the courts needed to be resurfaced, they are impeccably maintained. The staff too makes it all the more welcoming. And it truly is the little things that push it over the edge, cold water, shade on the courts for players and spectators, ice cold towels waiting for you at the change overs. The Tennis at the Seaside Tennis Facility at the Mauna Kea Beach Resort is fabulous. From the stunning seaside tennis courts to the impeccable service provided by the professional staff, this resort is a must for any tennis player. The front desk staff does an outstanding job of match making for hotel guests. The club membership represents all levels of tennis well. The local club members are friendly and very willing to have guests join their groups. Craig Paulter, the Director of Tennis, has made this resort the hub for Big Island Tennis. The staff makes sure you are never short on fresh, cold water and towels at your court. They also work hard to make sure you are happy with the quality of tennis you are getting at the Seaside Tennis Club. If you are visiting the Big Island in the winter, court eleven is where you want to be. It is not uncommon for your match to be delayed so you can watch the humpback whales just beyond your court! Once you have experienced the Mauna Kea Resort, you will not be able to wait for your return visit.

It was our first tennis entered vacation (we are 3.0 and 3.5 level players), and we absolutely loved it. The staff were very friendly and we learned an incredible amount in a short period of time. Because it is an upscale resort, we were worried that perhaps the staff/and or other players would be “stuck up”, however this was not the case. Everyone was down to earth, helpful and accommodating. Pretty mazing to be able to play tennis right next to the ocean as well. They kept us well hydrated with cold iceboater delivered to the courts and we attended the clinic every morning. If the clinic was full (8 people) we did drills which were fun and engaging, with 3 or 4 in the clinic the instructor was very good at one to one and group skills development. We will start saving for our next rip to this tennis resort!

The Tennis club at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel comprises ten excellently maintained hard courts right by the ocean. The pros, lead by Craig Pautler, are friendly and excellent teachers who make the tennis, at whatever level, fun and challenging. My wife and I spent the last week there with the original intention of maybe hitting a few balls once or twice. My wife is a beginner and I used to be a decent player but hadn’t played for nearly 20 years. One lesson there had us coming back for more every day. My wife is now able to rally with steady and satisfying ground and approach shots and I am now fully conscious of all the bad habits I have to overcome to return to form. It is no exaggeration to say that our tennis experience made our stay at Mauna Kea one of the best vacations we’ve ever had and now we are already planning and dreaming about our next trip. If you have a kid who is thinking of playing this is the place for your first introduction b/c Craig Pautler and team are tremendous and make the experience really fun! They understand that tennis is a lifelong sport and that you need to love it or you will not make it. They do a nice job wrapping in the fundamental aspects in digestable bites for children and are capable of ramping the subject matter at a pace that matches the child’s abilities and maturity. the only negative would be that on a windy day it can be a little windy 🙂

For our family we come to Mauna Kea because the tennis so convenient. Craig, Brad, Dan and Hector are just wonderful too. You just can’t find this kind of tennis program at any old resort. We love it here and will continue to come back each year because of the facility and the wonderful tennis programs.
Have gone to Mauna Kea for decades and it feels like going home. The tennis pros are truly professionals and we have hit with them for years. Love that there is not a new set of pros every year that you have to get to know. Craig, Brad, and Hector are friendly, fun, positive, relaxed, and very skilled, with great ability to just tweak a few things while you are on vacation to improve your game without trying to remake your stroke in 10 days. They are just as good with kids of all ages as they are with adults. Stunning setting next to the ocean!! Love that it is on-site and easy to walk to in the morning. Few places make tennis a pleasant and easy extension of your hotel/resort experience rather than making it another transaction with a third party, without the service and personal attention you get from being a valued guest. A rarity in this regard!! One of the central reasons we love Mauna Kea and continue to return. Hope they never lose it! Very sad to hear they were going to convert 3 courts to homesites. That is a bad, shortsighted decision.

Mauna Kea Tennis. What more can be said for the location with ocean on two sides of the courts. Hard to keep your eye on the ball with such beauty around you. I’ve visited the Mauna Kea properties for more than 10 years and by far–my favorite place. The pros at this facility are long term experts at improving your game. You can’t help but leave a better player. Craig Pautler has assembled a group of pros which span the spectrum of talent. Which ever you select Dan, Brad, Hector, or Wayne you can’t go wrong. We all have our favorites and Hector Mendoza is my preference when going onto the court. Hector quickly analyzes your level of play and then sets out to help you improve weaknesses he sees and strives to make you a better player when you leave the court. Visiting Mauna Kea Tennis is a great experience. I recommend it for anyone wanting to play a game or do the daily clinics.
We go for the clinic, lessons, round robins and arranged matches. We have been going there for almost ten years and participate daily.

I took a clinic at the club during my vacation last week. The clinic lead by Hector was excellent. Hector was enthusiastic and provided positive helpful feedback to all eight adults in the clinic. I was particularly impressed with his ability to do so in our relatively diverse group ,in terms of age and playing ability (though all had some tennis experience). I should also mention Cheryl in the pro shop who was warm, efficient and made every effort to make the tennis experience a pleasant one.
Six years in a row coming to Mauna Kea. We go for the beach and the tennis. There is no other complex as beautiful. The pro’s, Craig and Wayne, make us feel like members. A must visit.
It is a wonderful place to play tennis, relaxed if you want to be relaxed and have a good time, more competitive if you want that. Court 11 by the ocean has got to be one of the most beautiful tennis courts in the entire world. Play tennis, then watch the whales when switching sides between games. The weather is warm, but not too warm, and hardly any rain there at all. Try it – you like it. Correct that, try it – you’ll love it.
Fantastic staff – I took lessons from 3 coaches and all of them were very helpful and friendly. I can’t imagine any club that is more beautiful than Mauna Kea. The staff brought ice cold water as well as dry and iced towels to us multiple times during our court reservation. First class treatment!

We spent 6 nights in a villa at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. The Mauna Kea Tennis clinic was outstanding and catered to everyone’s tennis levels even when sharing clinic sessions. Thank you for making our pre-Christmas holiday so enjoyable.
My son (7) participated in tennis camp during our vacation. Coach Wayne was fantastic and the facilities were beautiful. I highly recommend it.
Seaside Tennis at Mauna Kea Resort was a fantastic experience! Our group included 7 children aging in range from 14-27, plus two sets of parents. The children ranged from inexperienced, to highly competitive, high school and college players. Wayne and his team were unbelievably friendly and accommodating, and catered to our diverse group. They managed to create clinics and round robins that tested the high level players, in addition to building the skills of the less experienced players, all while keeping us together as a group. Since we had a big group and changing interests each day, we ended up rescheduling several times, and coming back looking for extra courts. The team couldn’t have been more flexible and really did a great job of working with us. One member forgot her tennis shoes in NY and they chased up a pair for her to use the week we were there. The first day we were there , we did the regularly scheduled clinic. This was perhaps the only disappointment of the week as the level was a bit low for everyone. We quickly adjusted and asked for private lessons with Wayne, who we observed on an adjoining court. The rest of the week was simply outstanding and on many days we played in the morning, then came back in the afternoon for a group lesson with Wayne just because it was so much fun. Mid week Wayne organized a family round robin tournament for us, including Mauna Kea tennis glasses for the winners, which were fiercely battled for. We highly recommend Wayne and his team for: serious tennis players who want a tune up, high level rec players who want to sharpen skills, as well as beginners who want to develop their game. We will definitely be back and next time will organize our vacation around this fantastic facility. Thanks Wayne for a family vacation we will not forget!
Five days of tropical bliss at Seaside Tennis at Mauna Kea Resort. The location is “on the ocean” and crashing waves greet every volley, lob and serve. The matches organized by the pro shop were perfectly balanced. The clinics were well organized and the pros made the clinics exciting. The pro shop staff are friendly, helpful and truly “service” minded.
Hard to find a better setting than this one. A well-established program that hasn’t diminished with time but has only gotten better. A good mix of local club members and hotel guests. Courts always had activity and all seemed to be enjoying themselves. A group of excellent, dedicated teaching pros are there to assist players of all levels. A place I will visit again as soon as I can.
Seaside Tennis Club at the Mauna Kea Resort has unbelievable views to complement an excellent staff. Craig Pautler runs an exceptional tennis program at this resort club. We return every year for a few weeks and have never been disappointed. Craig is very sociable, has a great eye for stroke technique and sets up matches for my daughter , who is a ranked junior player. The courts are in great condition and every court has ocean views. The club is very active with programs for both hotel guests and local residents.
Played today at 11AM although warm and windy the courts were pretty much free of wind. Two ice cold pitchers of water along with iced towels were brought curtsied by the wonderful staff. The friendliest people work there.
The best tennis facility there is for the tennis courts..the people who run the facility..the tennis coaches….and the membership. They have really good players who they set you up with to play si goes or doubles…. They work hard at filling your request. Everyday they have a clinic …they have afternoon Round Robins… It’s a treat to keep going back to the Mauna Kea to play golf. Just the best
My husband and I immensely enjoy playing tennis at the Mauna Kea. The setting directly on the Ocean Front is Idyllic, one of the most breath taking settings in the World. The staff is super friendly and helpful and try to cater to all of our needs. It is also a very lively and fun environment with many players of all ages and skill level. We both would highly recommend staying and playing at the Mauna Kea.
Our 13 year old son came home from summer camp and announced that he was going to be playing tennis instead of baseball, where he had done very well. He loved the responsibility of getting the ball in his hands for every play, for owning the wins and losses himself. That spring we went to Mauna Kea in Hawaii during the spring break prior to tennis season to dust off the East Coast wintery cobwebs and get back into the swing of things. The teaching staff there was phenomenal. Our son took a lesson every day with Craig, who worked with him on his technique as well as the mental aspects of the game. He arranged games with local tennis players, and even invited him to play in a round robin tournament. It was fantastic to be able to get instruction in the morning and to have match play in the early evenings. In between there was golf, snorkeling, paddle boarding, whale watching and reading. In addition to our son’s tennis instruction, I (mother), too, played in the morning clinics. The focus was on doubles play and encouraging us all to be more assertive in our net play. I am neither horrible nor terrific, as were the others in the clinic. It was a fun and pleasant start to the mornings. And the staff was always there with a pitcher of ice cold water and a towel just when you needed it. The location is spectacular. The resort is a favorite of the whole family. We spent three spring vacations at the resort. We have plans to return again and again.
Director and staff at Seaside are the best. Where else can you get a friendly welcome from the director and pickup your conversation right where you left it a year ago? Craig is truly great. The welcoming hospitality of Monica and Cheryl keep us coming back year after year.
We have been coming to the Mauna Kea for four years, specifically for the amazing youth tennis program. Tennis pros Wayne and Craig create such a positive, fun and productive tennis experience for my two boys, ages 7 and 9. The kids have a ball and eagerly participate in clinics with Wayne and private or semi-private lessons with both Wayne and Craig. They help the kids learn and improve on the court. These coaches nurture and grow the kids’ enthusiasm for tennis. Wayne and Craig are so thoughtful, positive, and encouraging. My boys have a BLAST on the courts at the Mauna Kea. Other tennis pros include Hector, Dan and Brad — they too at times have worked with my kids and have also provided great tennis instruction with positive coaching and tennis JOY. The tennis courts are nested adjacent to the ocean, with shade provided by gorgeous, well maintain trees and tropical plants. One can see and hear the white water for the ocean waves in the background. While the environment at the Mauna Kea tennis courts is spectacular, and all the bells and whistles of a super fancy resort — yet the environment is so friendly, open and relaxed. It is a gift to be able to participate in the Mauna Kea tennis program!
My husband I unfortunately no longer play tennis so the following comments are based on the phenomenal enthusiasm of my son and four grandkids who weep when they leave and whoop when they arrive. They take lessons, clinics, play in “adult round robin” events and simply “play” on their own. This means that all our comments are based their astonishing experiences with tennis at the Mauna Kea.
My four grandkids and son all weep on leaving the Mauna Kea and will take lessons, clinics and as often as possible each day, starting as early as possible. Especially pleasing was the staff’s willingness to teach a “family” clinic and arrange for the youngsters to play in with established “adult” groups. We are hardly home and the kids clamor Coaches Craig and Wayne but love all five!
To say that the Mauna Kea is one of my favorite places in the world would be an understatement! I visited last summer with my daughter for a wedding and my past memories of the resort we all met and exceeded. The tennis garden is exactly that, one of the most picturesque places to play on the planet! My daughter and I enjoyed the courts and especially Craig Pautler’s hospitality. After all, the pro is the personality of the property!
Best tennis resort ever.
Our family used the Tennis Program for our two children who absolutely loved the experience. The staff are outstanding. They are patient, kind and incredible coaches. They continue to inspire our children. This experience is always a highlight for our kids. I highly recommend this tennis program, our kids can’t wait to go back.
This tennis facility is tops in all of our travels. Great staff , well kept courts and playing next to the beach was amazing. Plan to finish play at sunset and enjoy the ocean view. We went with a group and all of us hold great memories.
The ocean views from the courts are breathtaking. I have played in the early evening listening to live Hawaiian music from the lawn behind the courts and watching the ocean court side. It is nothing short of magical.
The Mauna Kea Beach Resort is the most fabulous tennis vacation spot we have been to. We have been to many,, but the staff,, tennis courts ,, lovely setting,, is specatular to any tennis adventurer. To play tennis along the sea with breathtaking views of visiting whales, dolphins is hard to concentrate on ones tennis game. Craig and his staff are wonderful to be on the courts with . After a tough session you get to jump into the ocean,, and enjoy the ambiance of Hawaii. Need it say more???? One of the best in the world and close to us too!!!!
The three most important things we require when we go on vacation are: Great Tennis facilities, amazing beach/ocean, and romantic location. The Mauna Kea has it all, but in our opinion, the tennis is definitely the highlight of our vacation. We’ve been going to the Mauna Kea two to three times a year for over a decade. We are USTA 4.5 players and when we make our reservations to go to the Mauna Kea we e-mail Craig to let him know when we are coming and Craig and his staff make arrangements for us to play every morning with either resort guests or local members/residents. Our matches are always fun and competitive and we have very much enjoyed getting to know some of the residents. The tennis courts are located in one of the most beautiful places in the world – the ocean view court being our favorite. Last time we were there it was difficult to not be distracted by the whales that were swimming past us.
The tennis facility at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is by far and away the most amazing tennis center in the world. And I can say that having played and traveled globally for tennis. The courts are directly on the ocean, only a small cliff separates you and the ball from the crashing waves below. The courts themselves are always in the best shape. In fact, I’ve visited once a year for the past 18 years, and I’ve never thought to myself that the courts needed to be resurfaced, they are impeccably maintained. The staff too makes it all the more welcoming. And it truly is the little things that push it over the edge, cold water, shade on the courts for players and spectators, ice cold towels waiting for you at the change overs. Couldn’t be better as every thing you could imagine is covered! A huge congratulations to Craig and his team for creating an unsurpassed tennis experience!
Fantastic location right on the ocean. Watch the whales go by and play tennis on 11 great courts. Instructors friendly, courteous and my wife and I have seen our tennis game improve significantly. Visit here at least 4 times a year from NYC. Weather perfect virtually all the time. Games can easily be arranged by staff. Resort is absolutely stunning!

The Tennis at the Seaside Tennis Facility at the Mauna Kea Beach Resort is fabulous. From the stunning seaside tennis courts to the impeccable service provided by the professional staff, this resort is a must for any tennis player. The front desk staff does an outstanding job of match making for hotel guests. The club membership represents all levels of tennis well. The local club members are friendly and very willing to have guests join their groups. Craig Paulter, the Director of Tennis, has made this resort the hub for Big Island Tennis. The staff makes sure you are never short on fresh, cold water and towels at your court. They also work hard to make sure you are happy with the quality of tennis you are getting at the Seaside Tennis Club. If you are visiting the Big Island in the winter, court eleven is where you want to be. It is not uncommon for your match to be delayed so you can watch the humpback whales just beyond your court! Once you have experienced the Mauna Kea Resort, you will not be able to wait for your return visit.
It was our first tennis entered vacation (we are 3.0 and 3.5 level players), and we absolutely loved it. The staff were very friendly and we learned an incredible amount in a short period of time. Because it is an upscale resort, we were worried that perhaps the staff/and or other players would be “stuck up”, however this was not the case. Everyone was down to earth, helpful and accommodating. Pretty mazing to be able to play tennis right next to the ocean as well. They kept us well hydrated with cold iceboater delivered to the courts and we attended the clinic every morning. If the clinic was full (8 people) we did drills which were fun and engaging, with 3 or 4 in the clinic the instructor was very good at one to one and group skills development. We will start saving for our next rip to this tennis resort!
The Tennis club at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel comprises ten excellently maintained hard courts right by the ocean. The pros, lead by Craig Pautler, are friendly and excellent teachers who make the tennis, at whatever level, fun and challenging. My wife and I spent the last week there with the original intention of maybe hitting a few balls once or twice. My wife is a beginner and I used to be a decent player but hadn’t played for nearly 20 years. One lesson there had us coming back for more every day. My wife is now able to rally with steady and satisfying ground and approach shots and I am now fully conscious of all the bad habits I have to overcome to return to form. It is no exaggeration to say that our tennis experience made our stay at Mauna Kea one of the best vacations we’ve ever had and now we are already planning and dreaming about our next trip. We can’t wait to play more tennis there. Thank you Craig and all your staff.
Tennis at Maune Kea is a spectacular resort tennis experience. The clinic offered each morning was excellent for all skill levels. It was a high spot of our stay. Bravo! the courts and overall ambience of the tennis center and staff is absolutely top notch

Excellent facility but the coaches are fantastic. If you have a kid who is thinking of playing this is the place for your first introduction b/c Craig Pautler and team are tremendous and make the experience really fun! They understand that tennis is a lifelong sport and that you need to love it or you will not make it. They do a nice job wrapping in the fundamental aspects in digestable bites for children and are capable of ramping the subject matter at a pace that matches the child’s abilities and maturity. the only negative would be that on a windy day it can be a little windy 🙂

The Mauna Kea Tennis Club is truly exceptional. The views are no doubt the best in the world. Where else can you watch whales breech while playing tennis? The coaches are extremely experienced and challenging while encouraging players at all levels. True professionals. There are many activities to join in including clinics, individual lessons and doubles play. The non-coaching staff is also uniquely gracious. They are experts at arranging games with locals and other guests, and always deliver water and towels with a smile. The leadership of Craig Pautler is evident throughout. He is warm and friendly, while maintaining the high standards that the clientele of this facility demands. This makes for an exceptional tennis experience. Wherever in the world I get a chance to play, I cannot help but compare it to the Mauna Kea and the Mauna Kea always wins!
