After more that 30 years of running tennis camps, New England Tennis Holidays (NETH) founder Kurt Grabher has passed the reins (and ball hoppers) on to Duncan Yarworth, who’s been part of the NETH staff since 2015. Duncan Yarworth, New England Tennis Holidays, Waterville Valley, NHA college player from Massachusetts, Yarworth has a breadth of tennis camp experience, having worked with adults and juniors at the Nike Amherst Tennis Camps in Massachusetts and later with the Cliff Drysdale Tennis programs at Stratton Mountain in Vermont before joining NETH. He has now taken charge of the popular New England Tennis Holiday adult programs at Waterville Valley Resort in New Hampshire. As in the past, his camps will run five hours a day on selected dates from late May into early October and will be staffed by many of the experienced pros who’ve themselves been fixtures of NETH’s summer gatherings.
There are few more beautiful places for tennis than Waterville in summer. 18 red-clay courts carpet the floor of a valley ringed by the peaks of the White Mountains. The full-service resort radiates out from a Town Square comprised of shops, restaurants, and a pond, whose waters spill over a rocky flume into a creek. Inns, lodges, and condo complexes fan out around it. Tennis aside, recreation at the resort includes a 9-hole golf course, fitness center (with two indoor courts and a spa), watersports on the pond, a chairlift to the top of the mountain (where there are hiking and mountain biking trails), and even ice skating. That makes it an ideal getaway for families, while the tennis adds an appeal to groups and singles.
Golf Courses: The resort has a 9-hole golf course, which winds around the valley floor; however guests also have privileges at the public Owl’s Nest Golf Course in Thornton, roughly a dozen miles away. Designed by Cornish, Silva & Mungeam, Inc., this 6,818-yard, par 72 championship course follows the natural topography of the Pemigewasset River and the White Mountain National Forest. It has five sets of tees on each hole, bentgrass fairways and manicured greens, which makes it accessible to golfers of any skill level.
Spa & Fitness Center: The Athletic Club has swimming pools, whirlpools, saunas, steam rooms, an indoor jogging track, and a selection of weights and cardiovascular equipment. Massages are also available.
Kayaks, pedal boats, and canoes are available for use on Corcoran’s Pond, there are mountain bike trails and a mountain-bike park, an ice-skating rink, hiking trails to the summits of the valley’s 4,000-foot peaks, and a gymnasium for basketball and indoor floor hockey.
Hiking trails abound, including a scenic 11.5-mile stretch of the Long Trail along the crest of the Green Mountains. The region is also laced with back roads suitable for bikers, both mountain and road. Summer Mountain Activities opens late in June and offer downhill mountain biking, zipline, bungee trampoline, scenic lift rides, and disc golf.

Children's programs: Waterville Valley Resort runs a summer recreation camp for children ages 4 to 16. Activities vary by age, including some specifically for teens. The resort also operates a free valley-wide shuttle bus to make getting around easy.
Dining: There are half a dozen places to eat in Waterville, from delis and pizzerias to seafood and steaks in the Wild Coyote Grill at the Athletic Club.

We visited this camp 5 times over the years and found it to be an excellent way to improve your game and have a great time doing it! Their strengths are the friendly and professional staff who were very knowledgeable and helpful in finding your weaknesses in your mechanics and making the correct changes. The 4 players to 1 instructor ratio is great so you often get one on one instruction. The weaknesses is the place isn’t directly on a resort but the facilities are nearby [Editor’s Note: that’s changed now that tney’ve moved to Sugarbush]. Â

We were very pleased with our tennis experience and feel like our games have been lifted to a new level. We found the coaching remarkably intuitive, positive, and constructively critical. The lunches were healthful and consistently very good. The dinners were mediocre. We are planning to return to NETH this winter in Vero Beach and hope to find at least some of the excellent coaches in residence there.
MM
Had a blast. My first tennis camp ever and I cannot wait to do it again. The NETH staff made the camp challenging but fun and Sugarbush was fabulous.
SL
Traveled to this camp with 8 women. It was my second year going. Some people in my group have returned 5 years straight at different locations! Pros new how to break skills down. I actually learned something!!!! Accommodations were 6 star. I would highly recommend this camp to players of all ability.
AM
Well designed program. Instruction level is generally strong and occasionally world class (especially Kurt, the founder). Good ratio of pros:students, often 3:1 or better although it was towards the end of the season. 5 hours of tennis per day is great. Some use of a ball machine with low pro supervision, but overall not excessive. Having pros join the group for lunch and dinner adds cohesion to the group. Sugarbush is a beautiful venue, with decent accommodation (condos are a little dated but perfectly fine, and hotel rooms are a little small but nice) and a very good restaurant. Tennis facilities need a bit of work – har tru coverage of courts was patchy and the indoor courts are dark. Tennis guests have use of the sports club including its pool and hot tub.
EO
I really enjoyed the tennis camp and learned a lot. The pros were exceptional, attentive, patient and provided both group and individualized instruction and feedback. I appreciated that they were well-prepared and extremely knowledgeable. Along with structure to our activities they created a fun and collegial environment, including music and trivia. The pros and other players were great company at dinner and accommodations at the resort well very nice, including jacuzzi and sauna.
BW
Overall, a very well run tennis program. Drills were fast paced and interesting. The instruction was helpful and emphasized how to simplify your game. The facility is nice, but you definitely need a car. Definitely a very good value, with meals being included.
SW
I’ve been to several different tennis camps, and NETH is definitely the best. Also, if you liked Burlington and North Conway, the new site at sugarbush is MUCH better than either of them. And unlike every other tennis camp i’ve heard of or tried in new england, it is completely no risk as there are indoor courts right there. No worries about unpredictable vermont weather. Kurt Grabher and his team are pretty famous in this world for their teaching methodology, which is based on a simple approach to your stroke and to the game, that emphasises an economy of movement that enables you to be there, ready, for each shot, and to use your opponents strength to your own advantage. it’s amazing actually. And the whole thing is both fun and organised — building a point in stages and then playing very fun drills and live points to drive the message home. Lots of fun and hitting lots (and i mean lots) of balls. It was crazy when I was there at the end of august. I was there for five days, and people were coming and going depending on their own vacation days, and of the 20 or so people that i saw there, i would say 15/16 were repeats. It’s getting to be like a family reunion at NETH. I can’t wait for christmas to catch them in Vero Beach!!
PD
I visited NETH last August for two days. The ratio of instructors to students was very good, 4 to 1 using four clay courts. The teaching staff were very competent and friendly. The instruction covered both doubles and singles with emphasis on volleys, serve and ground strokes in that order. Personally, since net play is my strong point I would prefer a bit more on ground stroke practice and technique. The location surrounded by the Vermont mountains is great and so are the hotels nearby. Overall it was a good experience.

My husband and I have attended 3 of New England Tennis Holidays tennis camps at various locations. We came away from each determined to return and we felt validated that we wanted to work with this particular company. The recent trip to Sugarbush far exceeded our expectations. First of all, my husband and I are at two different levels of play. The excellent pros were able to address both of our needs in a way that we were more than satisfied. They gave wonderful insights and I don’t mind saying that they were just fun to be with for 5 hours a day! Very experienced, professional and personable. You can’t beat the beauty of the locale. We found much to do in our off time. The food was of a gourmet level and meals were at various restaurants. Would we go back? Most certainly at every opening in our schedules. A most special operation, for sure!
JS
Very good instruction and excellent drills which kept everyone having fun!
MB
Staff was accommodating to one’s tennis needs; camp fosters congenial social atmosphere
DN
Outstanding teachers, very friendly. Impressed that they joined you for dinner and let them bend their ears off hours. I was impressed with the number of returnees – including one couple who have gone to at least a dozen of their camps, a few of the visits at their Florida site. Weakness: little hard to locate site, tho not problem for me. Courts are tiered, tho again, not a problem. Strongly recommend.
MC
I have been attending this camp for years and it never fails to satisfy. This is the first time I have been to their gorgeous Sugarbush location. The pros are always phenomenal. I really enjoye the small group instruction as well as the large group social aspect for meals. I can’t wait to go again next summer!
LF
This was my first tennis getaway and it was great. The instructors were friendly and helpful. They gave individual attention as needed and made it fun. Having meals together was a great way to get to know the other players.
KM
Great tennis instruction; fun drills that helped reinforce what we were learning; beautiful setting. Overall,I would highly recommend NETH.
JM
Kurt and staff provide a very professional and relaxed atmosphere that is perfect for the recreational player such as myself. They meet you at your skill level and provide you with instruction and tips to elevate your play to the next level. They made each day fun, yet filled with great tennis intruction.
DS
I recently attended the New England Tennis Holidays camp at Sugarbush Vt. The instruction was out- standing. I highly recommed this camp.
BH
This was my eighth NETH Camp experience and as usual it was great. The new Sugarbush location brought some changes, but the wonderful basics were there – attractive location, spectacular pros and always something new learned.
WA
This is my third year with New England Tennis Holidays. I have recommended it to all of my friends. It is my first year at Sugarbush. My friends and I stayed in a slope side condominium, beautiful views from our deck and very close to the tennis courts. Kurt and the gang of pros provide a product that no tennis player should miss. It is always fun and I take away a couple of things each year that improve my game.
RK
After 2 days at New England Tennis at Sugarbush, I can volley, with confidence. Need I say more.
MR
My wife and I are 4.0 players and we had previously visited NE Tennis in Vero Beach FL; we were so impressed with Kurt and the gang, we decided to take a flyer and try Sugarbush. As with Vero, GREAT pros, beautiful setting, nice condo ….we would give it a 9.9 out of 10; .1 deduction for the lousy sandwich at lunch served at the golf bar. We would go back and highly recommend it.
MW
This last visit to NETH was my 4th. This is a fun camp and the instruction is great. I have been playing since I was about 6 and I always get new insight into my game at NETH. Student:Instructor ratio seems to be around 4:1. There is valuable video analysis each day. Everyone takes lunch together. One of the instructors goes to dinner with the campers at a local upscale restaurant. The facility at Sugarbush is excellent. We stayed in the Claybrook Resort which is new and did not disappoint in any way. I foudnh it all much better than the former location in Cranmore. Courts were in great shape. When it rained one day we went inside. What else can I say … I would go again in a heartbeat.
LS
This is a great camp. The pros know their trade and give you what you need at your level to progress. I have recommended this camp to all my friends and plan on going again next year. Did I mention it is great fun and you can’t beat the setting in the mountains. I have attended this camp in the past and will continue every year after.
NS
I spent five fun days at NE Tennis at Sugarbush in July. This was my second vacation with them (last year I spent a week in their program in Essex, VT). The teaching was as good or better than at Essex (and it was darn good there). The accommodations at Claybrook were great (I had a whirlpool bath in my room, delightful after a day on the courts). The only downside was that I was the only camper for 2 of the 5 days–not so fun when traveling solo–but I give them a lot of credit for running the camp just for me and the personal attention helped me made some real progress on my serve. I hope to be back next summer!
WJ
Fun atmosphere. Helpful tips. Great location.
AX
This was my first time at a tennis camp and I have to say I came away very pleased with the experience. The pros were very friendly but firm with their instruction. The group instruction activities were fun but the pros also took the time to look at each persons game. The accommodations at the Clay Brook Hotel were also excellent. A good bargain all around in a beautiful part on New England. I would recommend this to anyone.
JI
An excellent tennis camp for anyone of any skill level. The pros were exceptional and helpful for all aspects of the game. Would highly recommend for anyone considering a tennis getaway. Playing with Roscoe Tanner rocked!
MD
The tennis instruction was excellent. The staff was patient, explained things thoroughly and made it fun. I would definitely recommend NE Tennis Holidays in Sugarbush. It’s a beautiful setting with a lot to offer.
NM
Great instruction from all of the pros. They all really made an effort to seek out individuals and give specific instruction as groups were going through drills. Accomodations at Claybrook were excellent in all respects.
PG
Just returned from camp. Great tennis instruction in a beautiful area of VT. Outdoor clay courts are excellent with good indoor courts for rainy days. Pros excel in excellent customer service and reality approaches toward improving your game. Loved the drills and doubles strategies.
LR
I just returned from a weekend at New England Tennis Holiday tennis camp at Sugarbush Vermont. I’ve been to quite a few tennis camps in the past but I have nothing but great things to say about this tennis camp. The drills were extensive and covered all of the aspects of my tennis game. The accomodations were wonderful and the food was excellent. The pros were great and we had alot of personal attention. I will definitely be returning to Sugarbush next year!
SW
Many of our friends at our tennis club raved about New England Tennis Holidays tennis camps. My wife and I are just back from a 3 day camp at its new facility at Sugarbush and understand why our friends are so enthusiastic about NETH. The standard of instruction was excellent, emphasizing the essentials of the tennis different strokes and eliminating the superfluous and harmful portions of our strokes. Since our return to club play, we have both noticed a substantial improvement in our games. The level of teaching is matched by the accommodations and amenities of the Sugarbush resort. Our room at the new Claybrook hotel was excellent, the pools, hot tubs and fitness facilities were first rate and the food (all meals included) was delicious. It is excellent value and a wonderful mini-vacation.
SK
My husband and I were beginners at tennis. We had a great time!! The instructors are kind and skilled and the accomodations are totally luxurious. Its a great place to work on your skills.
EA
My tennis group just returned from a fabulous weekend with New England Tennis Holidays at Sugarbush and can’t wait to return next year! The instruction continues to be first rate, but the move to the Claybrook at Sugarbush is such an improvement where accomodations are concerned. We enjoined the spaciousness of a great condominium while possessing the amenities of a full service hotel. All the meals were superb and even though our weekend presented itself with some rain, the ability to move indoors allowed us to fully take advantage of all our tennis instruction. Anyone wanting a first rate tennis camp in a fabulous location should come here.
BC
Excellent tennis instruction, with individualized attention. Comfortable lodging and excellent food. A great tennis camp.
MP
Wish the courts were not so spread out
DP
The accommodations were great, except that the tennis court layout was a little too spread out, with only a single court on each bank. It would have have been better if the pros rotated, to save a little time. Otherwise, it was fun teasing Kurt when he got to talking and the tennis was fun.
EL
I had a great time spending five days at New England Tennis Holidays in Vermont. I learned a great deal about playing tennis from wonderful instructors. At the same time, every day of instruction was fun. I had never played a game of tennis and couldn’t even serve. Now I have a game and even can think strategy. I will do it again soon. Great value, great instructors.
BB
Kudos to New England Tennis Holidays for offering a tennis camp at Sugarbush VT. The accomodations at Claybrook Hotel are top-notch. The suites were palatial and luxurious, including comfy bathrobes (the sign of a first-rate hotel). The attached Timbers Restaurant was convenient and the food was excellent. From Boston, the drive is only 3 hours. I highly recommend the New England Tennis Holidays tennis camp at Sugarbush VT!
TC
NE Tennis Holidays at Sugarbush was just the recharge I was looking for – both for my tennis game and life! The quality of over ten hours of tennis instruction was outstanding. The friendly, experienced staff knew just how to provide feedback to the more “experienced” player to improve all aspects of the game – baseline, volleys, serves and doubles strategy. The staff used immediate feedback both live and in video very effectively. Lunches at the charming golf course clubhouse were perfect – with plenty of delicious meal choices to appeal to all. After a wonderful day, the “apres-tennis” experience was perfect! We dined at the grand Timbers (a superior menu in a stunning restaurant – yet still intimate and comfortable), swam in the sparkling pool and lounged in the relaxing spa at the spectacular Claybrook condos, amid the picturesque Vermont mountains. Next year can’t come soon enough!
PH
This was a great day of tennis. The pros did great with the large group. I was only there one day and I feel that I will take what I learned on that day home and apply it too my individual game. The spot was beautiful and the resort and food was great. You had to work really hard and I think having a time to socialize with the pro afterwards was great too. I will definitely like to go back next year for the entire weekend. PH for PP- May 2010

This is my 3rd year in a row attending a New England Team Tennis Holiday’s Camp. This year they moved from North Conway, NH to Sugarbush Vermont. What a beautiful location! Views of the mountains, rivers running in and around the tennis courts, outstanding accomodations at Clay Brook resort etc. The drive was only about 1/2 hour longer than it had been in the past couple of years when we went to North Conway, New Hampshire. Kurt and staff (of which have been with him numerous years) were excellent and gave good tips to all. I truly look forward to this annual trip each year.
KH
New England Tennis Camp at Sugarbush was much nicer than at Cranmore. The condos were beautiful, the food at dinner was supurb, and lunch at the golf course was great – with spectacular views. The drive was a little longer for us, but well worth it. Kurt and his staff run a terrific camp. I got a lot of individual pointers despite our large group. I agree with one review that it would be more timely if the pros moved court to court instead of the players. I will be returning next season again. Sugarbush was a good move! We also all enjoyed the pool and especially the hot tub right outside of our condo.

We had a large group participate this year at Sugarbush VT, New England Tennis Holiday Tennis camp weekend. A wonderful time was had by all! I really enjoyed the tennis instruction and great clay courts at New England Tennis Holidays in Sugarbush. I can’t wait to go out and use all that I’ve learned! The tennis pros were very helpful with tips and techniques that will be sure to improve my game. I especially liked the volley instruction. Vermont is beautiful and our condos were beautiful!
MS
Very attentive and professionnal pros. Covering technics and strategy in depth. Videos of ourselves and comments by the pros every day.
MS
Being over 60, I was concerned that 10 hours of tennis over the weekend would leave me exhausted. Instead, I was invigorated and I’m eager to put into practice all the suggestions made to improve, rather than change my game. For the most part, the pros gently made corrections that will help me play more effectively as I age. The pool and hot tub were a great way to stretch out and relax after a day with friends. However, I’m not sure if I was able to burn off all the calories I consumed as the food was scrumptious! The view and accommodations were well worth the extra driving time.

I just returned from my third Tennis Holiday and Sugarbush is a refreshing change from NH. Although the drive was a little longer, the scenery was so superb the extra time flew by. The accommodations at Clay Brook and the dining were exceptional. Having lunch at the Golf Club was a nice change of pace. The courts are well maintained and the instruction was excellent. Kurt, Matt, Curt, Mike, Matt, David, Raz and the rest of the staff are extremely helpful in what it will take to get your game to the next level. The only downside I experienced was the courts are separated, so there is a lot of walking. It may be more efficient to have the pros rotate instead of the players. In addition, it would have been nice if the groups are changed from the morning to the afternoon sessions or from the first day to the second day. Thank you again for a Great Weekend! Stay Squared!
KV
The new venue for New England Tennis Holidays at Sugarbush in Vermont is breathtaking. The Clay Brook Resort offered the best accommodations our group has ever enjoyed and we all agreed that the Saturday evening dinner at the Timbers was superb. We enjoyed a relaxing lunch both days at the golf course while taking in the spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. Although we were their first big group at Sugarbush, they were well organized and kept things moving with different stations of drills, time on the ball machine and the dreaded but useful videotape analysis. The tennis instruction provided by Kurt and his staff of pros is excellent and keeps us coming back year after year.

Fun atmosphere. Helpful tips. Great location.
An excellent tennis camp for anyone of any skill level. The pros were exceptional and helpful for all aspects of the game. Would highly recommend for anyone considering a tennis getaway. Playing with Roscoe Tanner rocked!
The tennis instruction was excellent. The staff was patient, explained things thoroughly and made it fun. I would definitely recommend NE Tennis Holidays in Sugarbush. It’s a beautiful setting with a lot to offer.
Great instruction from all of the pros. They all really made an effort to seek out individuals and give specific instruction as groups were going through drills. Accomodations at Claybrook were excellent in all respects.
Just returned from camp. Great tennis instruction in a beautiful area of VT. Outdoor clay courts are excellent with good indoor courts for rainy days. Pros excel in excellent customer service and reality approaches toward improving your game. Loved the drills and doubles strategies.
My husband and I were beginners at tennis. We had a great time!! The instructors are kind and skilled and the accomodations are totally luxurious. Its a great place to work on your skills.
Excellent tennis instruction, with individualized attention. Comfortable lodging and excellent food. A great tennis camp.
Wish the courts were not so spread out
The accommodations were great, except that the tennis court layout was a little too spread out, with only a single court on each bank. It would have have been better if the pros rotated, to save a little time. Otherwise, it was fun teasing Kurt when he got to talking and the tennis was fun.
The staff at NETH is as conscientious and consistant as ever. This was my third time attending a NETH camp, my first at Sugarbush, VT and I felt the move is a terrific improvement in accomodations! Thank you Curt, Kurt, Matt, Dave , Ras,and Eric , great job! B. DiGiorgio, Massachusetts

Very attentive and professionnal pros. Covering technics and strategy in depth. Videos of ourselves and comments by the pros every day.
