After more that 30 years of running tennis camps, New England Tennis Holidays (NETH) founder Kurt Grabher has passed the reins (and ball hoppers) on to Duncan Yarworth, who’s been part of the NETH staff since 2015. Duncan Yarworth, New England Tennis Holidays, Waterville Valley, NHA college player from Massachusetts, Yarworth has a breadth of tennis camp experience, having worked with adults and juniors at the Nike Amherst Tennis Camps in Massachusetts and later with the Cliff Drysdale Tennis programs at Stratton Mountain in Vermont before joining NETH. He has now taken charge of the popular New England Tennis Holiday adult programs at Waterville Valley Resort in New Hampshire. As in the past, his camps will run five hours a day on selected dates from late May into early October and will be staffed by many of the experienced pros who’ve themselves been fixtures of NETH’s summer gatherings.
There are few more beautiful places for tennis than Waterville in summer. 18 red-clay courts carpet the floor of a valley ringed by the peaks of the White Mountains. The full-service resort radiates out from a Town Square comprised of shops, restaurants, and a pond, whose waters spill over a rocky flume into a creek. Inns, lodges, and condo complexes fan out around it. Tennis aside, recreation at the resort includes a 9-hole golf course, fitness center (with two indoor courts and a spa), watersports on the pond, a chairlift to the top of the mountain (where there are hiking and mountain biking trails), and even ice skating. That makes it an ideal getaway for families, while the tennis adds an appeal to groups and singles.
Golf Courses: The resort has a 9-hole golf course, which winds around the valley floor; however guests also have privileges at the public Owl’s Nest Golf Course in Thornton, roughly a dozen miles away. Designed by Cornish, Silva & Mungeam, Inc., this 6,818-yard, par 72 championship course follows the natural topography of the Pemigewasset River and the White Mountain National Forest. It has five sets of tees on each hole, bentgrass fairways and manicured greens, which makes it accessible to golfers of any skill level.
Spa & Fitness Center: The Athletic Club has swimming pools, whirlpools, saunas, steam rooms, an indoor jogging track, and a selection of weights and cardiovascular equipment. Massages are also available.
Kayaks, pedal boats, and canoes are available for use on Corcoran’s Pond, there are mountain bike trails and a mountain-bike park, an ice-skating rink, hiking trails to the summits of the valley’s 4,000-foot peaks, and a gymnasium for basketball and indoor floor hockey.
Hiking trails abound, including a scenic 11.5-mile stretch of the Long Trail along the crest of the Green Mountains. The region is also laced with back roads suitable for bikers, both mountain and road. Summer Mountain Activities opens late in June and offer downhill mountain biking, zipline, bungee trampoline, scenic lift rides, and disc golf.

Children's programs: Waterville Valley Resort runs a summer recreation camp for children ages 4 to 16. Activities vary by age, including some specifically for teens. The resort also operates a free valley-wide shuttle bus to make getting around easy.
Dining: There are half a dozen places to eat in Waterville, from delis and pizzerias to seafood and steaks in the Wild Coyote Grill at the Athletic Club.

NETH at Suugerbush is our favorite tennis destination. Everyone in our family is an avid tennis player and we always look for challenges and ways to improve. NETH does a great job at that via its superb pro staff, great variety of drills, and fun atmosphere. Whatever your level of play, NETH should be your destination! Thanks, NETH!

It was an overall ok experience. Food was not consistent in terms of quality, of the 4 nights we were there, 2 nights food was exceptional and the other two below average. The Common Man restaurant menu was extremely limited and they charged us extra for two juices, nickle and diming the customer is not a good way to make me come back… for that the Common Man will get a low rating here and on urbanspoon online. The timber restaurant in Claybrook was exceptional for two dinners and one dinner was below average (not sure what happened that night). Claybrook suite rooms are great, very clean and good service, food at the Golf Club was repetitive and very limited menu, food was ok. Tennis camp was good, some instructors were better than others, Curt was an exceptional instructor, the others not so much when compared to Curt. Overall it was a good experience and I would reccomend it, however there are certain areas the need improvement as mentioned above.
ET
Great instructors, good food! I improved my form in 3 days!
NL
Just returned from a two day camp at Sugarbush over the weekend. FANTASTIC all the way around! The coaching, accomodations, and food were all spectacular. My wife and I are already making plans to return with a group of friends as well as our USTA teams. I would highly recommend this camp to any player that is looking for excellent coaching as well as first class amenities.
DB
It was awesome. I was able to get the forehand, back hand, and all techniques so I could utilized them properly in a game.
DP
I’ve attended a tennis camp every June over the last four years, and the one at Sugarbush, VT in June, 2012 was by far the best. The knowledge of the game and level of teaching by all the pros was excellent! I particularly liked Curt, who gave that extra effort and exhibited genuine interest in the improvement of each player.
LG
I had an excellent first trip to NETH over Memorial Day wknd! The program run by pros Curt and Perk was a good mix of stroke technique, drills and game playing. Their instruction was very professional- perceptive and constructive –they really pinpointed key improvements to my strokes, serve and court movement-and even calmed my focus. The pace was intense and challenging but not bootcamp-they’re super personable and make it fun! Being critiqued a la videotape was immensely helpful. We lunched and had dinner together with the pros and there was lots of tennis talk in addition to getting to know the group. Sugarbush is a high-end resort and I loved being in the middle of the stellar Green Mountains. A treat was the heated pool and hot tubs for après tennis. I took home a better game, improved strokes and can’t wait to go back!
RO
This was the first time ever that I had attended a tennis camp – and it couldn’t have gone better. The teaching pros were patient and the feedback was wonderful. I found the video taping most helpful. Seeing was believing. Now to work all this into my game. The setting was wonderful with the mountains as a backdrop. The conditions of the outdoor courts were excellent. The hotel accommodations were superb, and I enjoyed dinner and tennis conversation with the pros at the end of the day. I couldn’t expect any more from the camp and I would look forward to doing this again.
BK
The entire vacation was exceptional for me. Starting from the staff who took my questions and assisted me in booking my stay over the phone, right through the on-court instruction, this was an extremely enjoyable experience for me. Of course, the highlight was the tennis instruction. We had a number of instructors during the week, but the mainstays were Kurt and Perkins. Both were extremely personable, and gave terrrific instruction on everything from swing techniques to position on the court, strategy, even down to what the options are when winning the raquet spin at the start of a match. There was always something to learn. Video analysis was extremely helpful in aiding me to address some bad habits. What I can tell you most is that when I hit a shot the way Kurt and Perk showed me to hit it, the shot is so much better than it ever was before. From forehand to backhand, top-spin to slice, it all got better for me in a one week stay. My visit was early in May as well and the group was very small, but I considered that a benefit as the instructor ratio was superb, and I got more reps due to the small class size. Accomodations were outstanding, and the meals were fantastic. I’ll definitely go back again, probably the same week next year. I don’t recommend that YOU go that early in the season, only because I want to have all that instruction for my very small class size again. 😉
AC
The instructors were excellent. Very detailed, focused, personable and kind instruction. The camp is at a good pace, I went for three days and could have stayed longer. Good drills with a lot of thought and explanation of how the drills contribute to your game vs. just drilling and running around. The video instruction was very helpful. My only negative is that I went early season in which the resort was empty and the camp attendance low, which was not so great for a solo camper. But, the tennis instruction was excellent.
JL
Everything was beyond my expectations– the accommodations, the instruction, and the teaching pros. Great combination of instruction, drills, games, video analysis of strokes, customization of instruction for your level and style of play.
JS
Excellent teaching pros, courts, accomandations, food and views – what more can you ask for and yet there is more. They go out of their way to please and make sure you are taken care of – I come up by myself and I never have to have a meal on my own, even if the other participants have not signed up for meals, 1 or more of the pros will have dinner with me. I really have nothing put good things to say about NE Tennis Holidays.
LM
Attended New England Tennis Holidays at North Conway, NH for years. Our group wanted to change locactions to New England Tennis Holidays at Sugarbush – what a grand decision! Location was lovely – tennis courts, coach’s and lessons were superb. Highly recommend this location!
JK
The courts were in very good condition, the instruction was mostly good. We had 3 different instructors, one was good with breaking down the stroke production, another was good with doubles strategy, and the last was very personable. It would have been helpful for more video analysis on all the strokes & serves. Overall it was a good camp.
KP
First time at this location. The tennis courts were fabulous! The instruction was super. The student/teacher ratio was excellent. On the first day there were 9 students/4 pros. Day two 10 students/3 pros. Very individual attention. I would highly recommend this tennis camp to every one!!! I will be back again next year.
NK
Beautiful setting excellent staff
AR
Instructors were excellent, good focus on technique and form. Kept us moving.
PW
Great instruction. Finally, a camp that focuses on individuals instead of just drills, drills, drills. Of course, you get that, too.
PM
New England Tennis Holidays provided an extremely enjoyable week… it fostered a congenial atmosphere between the coaches and the players (and between the players themselves) and most everybody seemed to be having fun. Vermont is beautiful and the courts are wonderful. The only drawback would be that, if you’re looking for a drill-sergeant-like approach with coaches that force you (under stress) to get better, this place is not for you. The coaches make suggestions, they don’t bark orders. I think they remember that people are there on holiday. Some people prefer the other type of coaching; you won’t find it here.
ST
Strengths include a fantastic setting with quality indoor and outdoor courts, a variety of excellent teaching pros, videotape analysis of forehand, backhand, volley and serve over a 4-day period, excellent meals and lodging. Not really a weakness but more its character, this camp is geared for the amateur club player. Advanced players should consider going elsewhere unless you come in a group of 4 or more.
JF
The instructors were very good; they are able to address the needs of tennis players at all levels. The amenities at Sugarbush are very good. I can’t think of any weaknesses.
BM
Very good coaching; staff knows how to tweak strokes, not change.
HA
Sugarbush is beautiful place to be in August if you’re visiting from Florida. Instructors were personable and very well trained. Great way to tune up your game.
ET
The instructors are very knowledgable. Ratio of students to instructors is good. The courts are beautiful.
TD
Great camp…always pick up new tips. Pros work on keeping it simple (less is more) which helps me incorporate what I learned.
AH
The teaching pros really keyed in on small changes that made a big difference in my strokes. They did a great job catering to all levels. The weather was perfect and the area is beautiful.
RC
Had a great time. My one disappointment concerned the interface (or lack thereof) between the video work and subsequent instruction. We got a good video analysis of our service motions, for example, but then no opportunity to work with coaches on improving those motions. In general, I would have liked less drill and more instruction.
AW
Surrounded by the beauty of the Sugarbush resort, NETH offers an excellent summer camp experience. The pleasant, engaging and good-spirited professionals attempt to personalize instruction in an atmosphere of relaxed camaraderie. The only drawback is the variability in the level of camp participants.
RS
Highly skilled instructors that really spoke to your game, not general instruction sets. They watched and actively worked on taking the skillset you brought to camp and refine it, not change everything into a one size fits all tennis game. And to think, this quality instruction came wrapped in fantastic summer weather and a great vacation spot. I could not imagine a better tennis camp package. We will be back for many years to come.
AL
Great tennis instruction, pros pay attention to individuals, remember from day to day, year to year, what you need to work on, how you’ve progressed, what’s best for your game, your individual style: I was very impressed by this aspect of the instruction, the time the pros take going over videos of our strokes and really watching us as we hit. There are good clay courts, weather was amazing so never saw the indoor facilities. Lovely setting in Sugarbush, nestled amid hills. I loved the “camp” aspect, having lunch and dinner together, plan to keep in touch with new friends, sad to leave.
BB
Strengths: Beautiful setting, excellent restort amenities, 4 nice outdoor Har-tru courts, good pros, fun program, great people, video tape/instruction, lots of fun! Weaknesses: Not enough individual attention, a bit too much “talking”, not enough match play. The drills did not always reinforce the theme of the day.
BF
Strengths – 1)Quality, humor, dedication of teaching pros – they all work TIRELESSLY to make your stay fun and educational. 2) You are rotated amongst the pros throughout the day ALL of whom give you lots of individual advice. 3) Fellow campers of all skill levels are warm and friendly. New people start each day and everyone is welcomed. Weakness: Coffee in hotel was terrible! Bring your own kcups and use lobby keurig. One couple brought their own coffee grounds to use in the hotel room.
BB
Very well organized. Staff very friendly and approachable. Got some good group lesson skills and strategy and some individual pointers.
JS
we love love love it there always. the best!! fun and easy to understand instruction. Great location. food yummy and nice lodgings.
DF
A great learning experience in a gorgeous mountain setting. The instruction is first-rate and so much fun. I just played my first post-camp match, and, wow, I could actually see the difference in my game already.
DG
great place great pros wonderful tennis
RS
My daughter and I had a wonderful time at the NETH camp in Sugarbush. The instructors were not only extremely qualified and dedicated to helping us improve our game, their warm personalities made everyone (at every level) feel comfortable and happy to be there. Their ability to express movements in colorful, memorable ways worked so well – I will remember the concepts for many years to come. We had such a great time – we never stopped smiling for the entire 3 days! We didn’t want to leave and are already planning our next holiday with NETH. Thank you Kurt and Kurt, Michael, JJ, Roz, Perkins, and David!
JT
Strengths: great pro to student ratio, very effective teaching method, great use of humor, music trivia. Weakness: not much of a nightlife in area, stores, including convenience stores, close at 9pm.
HR
Excellent experience. The tennis camp is well organized, many of the same pro’s are back year after year, and the setting and accommadations are first rate. My ninth time visiting this camp and have fun everytime. You’ll hit plenty of balls, learn something everytime, meet alot of nice people and really enjoy yourself.
SG
the pros at NE Tennis camp are great. they make the chore of changing habits enjoyable with an effective method. The accommodations are more than adequate and the courts are wonderful.
AK
I found the methodology of the staff to be well thought out and presented. The staff was capable of communicating the execution and purpose of the exercises and I felt I learned how to correct many of the flaws in my game. I was concerned that five hours of instructional tennis in one day was going to be more pain than gain but was very pleased, when at the end of the second day, I was still fully functional and able to drive myself home (four hours away).
AF
We went to New England Tennis holidays this summer and had a terrific time. Our kids went to camp for the first time, and we got to go to camp as well! Kurt and his team were all fabulous – the attention was really individualized, and the staff was both fun and friendly. My husband and I do not play at the same level, and this was just not a problem at all. We really enjoyed the experience at Sugarbush and will go back. We may try to get to Vero Beach as well! Thanks for a super experience.
TC
The New England Tennis Holiday at Sugarbush provides a fantastic balance of fun and top notch professional tennis coaching. I learned so much in the week that I visited and have been able to easily apply all the learnings to my game. You can’t miss with New England Tennis Holidays!!!
MR
I highly recommend this camp. The tennis instruction was clear and well organized. The videotaping and the follow up critique were very helpful. The pace of the camp was very comfortable. The accomodations and the food were excellent and the setting spectacular. I will definitely go back.
SL
A very enjoyable tennis experience due to the knowledgeable and easy-going pros, Curt and Mark, who challenged us with drills that were varied, fun and effective. Video analysis was very revealing and informative. Sometimes the pace was a bit slow and the instruction was more focused on weaker players due to the unevenness of the skill levels of the different campers, but I think the pros tried to handle the situation as best as they could.
BB
The pros were able to quickly identify weaknesses in my game and gave useful tips on how to make improvements. The video analysis is extremely helpful, but what would make it even better is to tape us both before and after receiving instruction to help reinforce what we’ve learned. Each day included a good mix of technique and strategy. The five hours per day went really quickly!
DP
An excellent instructional tennis experience in a small group setting with lots and lots of one-on-one interaction with the instructors. While the emphasis was on movement and doubles strategy, all aspects of the game were covered. The camp was held at a brisk pace and was a friendly, welcoming, non-intimidating place for all attendees. Fabulous instructors – friendly, realxed, and approachable. Wife-willing, I will be back!
TP
This was my 7th year at the New England Tennis Holidays camp and the 2nd year at the location in Sugarbush. Once again, it did not disappoint. My friend and I signed up for the very first weekend of the year in May 2011 and were lucky enough to be the only 2 players at camp. I was thrilled that Curt Johnson was the pro again (he was last year) and I feel that I was really able to elevate my game. I plan on going again later in the season and highly recommend it to anyone considering a tennis camp.
GD
The setting in the Vermont Green Mountains is a fabulous summer destination. Comfortable temperatures, well built and maintained Har-Tru courts, excellent teaching staff make for an environment conducive to learning and, just as important, having fun.
MM
The tennis camp at Sugarbush was excellent. The use of video analysis of serve was very beneficial, and the level of instruction was outstanding. There was a nice blend of instruction, coaching, and game play. The instructors were very skilled and the facilities were excellent. The individual attention to different skill levels was a plus!

My husband and I do not play at the same level, and this was just not a problem at all. We really enjoyed the experience at Sugarbush and will go back. We may try to get to Vero Beach as well! Thanks for a super experience.
The New England Tennis Holiday at Sugarbush provides a fantastic balance of fun and top notch professional tennis coaching. I learned so much in the week that I visited and have been able to easily apply all the learnings to my game. You can’t miss with New England Tennis Holidays!!!
I highly recommend this camp. The tennis instruction was clear and well organized. The videotaping and the follow up critique were very helpful. The pace of the camp was very comfortable. The accomodations and the food were excellent and the setting spectacular. I will definitely go back.
The setting in the Vermont Green Mountains is a fabulous summer destination. Comfortable temperatures, well built and maintained Har-Tru courts, excellent teaching staff make for an environment conducive to learning and, just as important, having fun.
