Saddlebrook Resort has a well-deserved reputation for staging one of the most—if not, the most—demanding tennis programs on the planet. The underlying philosophy owes much to the training techniques of the legendary Australian Davis Cup coach and notorious taskmaster Harry Hopman. His was a taxing regimen designed at once to improve technique and push the envelope of his charge’s stamina and endurance. That reputation for toughness draws aspiring juniors to its academy and committed adults, the latter attracted to the blend of rigorous workouts and Saddlebrook’s full resort amenities.
Saddlebrook Resort garnered awards for its design when it opened in 1981. The 480-acre layout, 25 miles north of Tampa, places the lodging, restaurants, shops, a lakesize swimming pool, tennis courts, spa, golf clubhouse, and meeting rooms at the center of a halo of golf fairways, condos, and residential neighborhoods. Centralizing all of the major amenities creates what they call a “Walking Village.” Foliage is lush, ponds and lakes dot the property, and birds are abundant, including several endangered species for which this is a refuge and a rookery.
This is hardly the setting you’d expect for the mother of all hard-core tennis camps, but having all those amenities provides relief from the rigors of the daily regimen while its guard gate provides privacy and security—one reason touring pros visit between tournaments to work on their games. Its juniors, both live-in and short term, hope the program will set them on the road to greatness (or at least a college scholarship), while adults come looking to get in shape, test their physical mettle, or perhaps search for a magic elixir to cure, once and for all, the flaws in their game. It is also often true that the adults frequently underestimate the physical demands a program like this makes, and that even though none has ever in his or her life played five hours of tennis a day, they somehow think they are ready for five hours a day of drills.
Although the historical philosophy of the program has to push you to the point that your game breaks down, find what is salvageable in the rubble, and rebuild from there. That said, after my last visit I came away thinking that this approach has mellowed somewhat in recent years. In my early participation in the Hopman program, as it was known then, I remember being chastised for ignoring a feed too wide for me to reach, only to have the next fed wider until I learned that it was crucial to make an attempt even when you thought you had no chance of reaching the balls. I remember, too, the so-called “bucket of ball” drills and “kamikaze” drills that had you scampering right and left and back again until you pleaded exhaustion or the pro was convinced you’d had enough.
My sense is that while the regimen remains demanding, the boot-camp approach has been abandoned. None of the pros on my latest visit adopted an in-your-face drill sergeant’s demeanor (though I was told that if that’s what you want, it is available). Instead, they established key concepts essential to hitting well—early preparation, eyes on the ball, full follow-through—and then ran drills and competitive exercises to put those concepts into practice. Still, there were times when we were grateful for the break afforded by the need to pick up balls.
Although there are exceptions, you typically stay with the same pro throughout your stay (barring his or her days off), so they oversee your progress first-hand. They tailor the work to the abilities of the campers they oversee. Rather than stand in one place and hit picture-perfect strokes, you pretty much have to run for every ball. Like the pros, you’ll do a lot of two-on-one drills, and if your skills permit it live-ball drills and competitive games with the other campers on your court. The process can be exhilarating, demoralizing, or both, but you will come away from this program knowing where you stand with respect to your aerobic conditioning and what you really need to do to take your game to the next level.
If courts alone were the measure of a great tennis resort, then Saddlebrook would rank near the top. It has 45 courts altogether, including hard, clay, red clay, Rebound Ace (the surface formerly used at the Australian Open) and grass, all of which—the grass included—are available to guests. The major complex is near the center of the resort. There is a secondary complex a mile away in Lakeside Village, which is also the site of the 3,000-square-foot fitness center and high-performance complex and where the juniors enrolled in the academy work out. All of the courts are laid out in clusters of two to five separated by an awning-covered patio furnished with chairs and a refrigerated water fountain.
Tennis Staff: Although Harry Hopman, the legendary Australian Davis Cup coach, died in 1985, the organization he built survives. The core group of staff, many longtime Saddlebrook pros, expands and contracts based on how many adults are enrolled in the programs—as many as are needed to keep the student:pro ratio at 4:1 of less.
Tennis Programs: Although the resort itself offers some perfunctory stroke-of-the-day clinics (run by tennis-academy staff), the real reason a tennis player would come here is the Hopman-inspired camps.
Unlike some other dedicated facilities and college-campus programs, Hopman’s does not include any meals in the package, so for other dining you’re left to fend for yourself at the quite good but pricey restaurants at the resort itself or pile into cars for trips beyond the resort. Caveat: The Saddlebrook program can be among the most physically demanding of all the camps, so start a workout regimen weeks before you come down. Bring two pairs of tennis shoes, several changes of clothes (washers and dryers are available in each lodging cluster), a hat, sunblock, two racquets if you have them (broken strings are commonplace), and overgrip.
Off Court
Golf Courses: Saddlebrook has two 18-hole courses, both designed by Arnold Palmer, and an Arnold Palmer Golf Academy. Tee times for any of the following courses can be reserved.
Palmer Course: This course is characterized by open, undulating fairways, and an abundance of lakes, streams and ponds. Par: 71. Length: 5,212-6,469 yards.
Saddlebrook Course: Though flatter than the Palmer course, this one is also tighter, with tree-lined fairways and water on most of its holes. Par: 70. Length: 5,183-6,603 yards.
Spa & Fitness Center: The 7,000-square-foot Spa in the walking village has 12 treatment rooms offering massages, hydrotherapy treatments, and some beauty services; however, it is currently closed. Campers who can still walk at the end of the day are welcome to use the 3,300-square-foot, state-of-the-art fitness center in Lakeside Village, a 10-minute walk from the Superpool, but it’s rate that anyone does so. It has a full line of Cybex equipment plus treadmills, stair steppers, recumbent bicycles, elliptical trainers, and rubber-encased freeweights all in rooms with views of a swimming pool or volley ball pit. Personal trainers are on hand to help you craft a workout regimen. There is also an adjacent high-performance sports center, which offers specialized training programs often to professional athletes.
The centerpiece of the resort is its half-million-gallon, amoeba-shaped Superpool, said to be the largest in Florida. At 270 feet long, it is vast enough to contain a 25-meter lap pool, water volleyball and water basketball courts, and a diving area. Around it are children’s wading pools and two heated whirlpools. There is another swimming pool near the Sports Village & Fitness Center. Otherwise, recreation run to bike trails around the property and bass fishing in the privately stocked lakes.
Children's programs: The S’Kids Club operates year round providing supervised activities for kids ages 4-12.
Dining: The TD’s Sports Bar has light fare and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Dempsey’s Steakhouse is currently closed; however it’s menu prime beef and seafood is available at TD’s Sports Bar. There’s also a pool bar for lunch and poolside cocktails.
Accommodations
There are a total of 790 rooms and suites at Saddlebrook, most of them in 50-unit clusters variously arrayed near the main clubhouse and pool, or out along the golf fairways. Each cluster has an ice machine and washer/dryer. The most basic accommodation is a hotel room with two double beds and a private balcony or patio. The alternatives are one- and two-bedroom suites (which anywhere else would be called condos). These have full kitchens (with coffee makers and dishwashers; most have microwaves, if not you can request one), separate living and dining areas, and one or two bedrooms, each with a full bath. The living room opens onto a patio or balcony. High-speed Internet access is available throughout the resort.
Anyone who enrolls in the Saddlebrook International Tennis program is eligible for discounted room rates. By booking tennis and lodging together, you get a deluxe guest room, 5 hours/day of intensive tennis, complimentary court time, daily lunch, and access to the fitness center and spa. One- and two-bedroom suites with full kitchens are also available.
Getting there
Seasons: The resort and its Hopman tennis programs operate year-round; however, given the grueling nature of these clinics, you should think twice about coming in summer—unless, of course, you want to work out in hot, humid conditions. Principally for that reason, the camps are generally two to three times larger during the fall, winter, and spring than in summer.
We have been to the Saddlebrook Tennis Resort many times and we always have a great time. Their is sometihing for every age and all levels of player. The program offers daily half or full day tennis clinics with great pros and no more than 4 people on a court at once.
PW
Back from a five day package and it was wonderful….as ever. Have been about six times over the last 20 years and always feel like my game has gone up a notch or two from the intense drills. They make it fun but work you really hard and you know your gaming is changing for the better every day! Aside from the tennis, the resort is fabulous with great accommodations, a fabulous gym and spa. Come, Enjoy!
EM
I had a great time at Saddlebrook’s adult tennis camp. The instructors are top-notch and the morning drills are a good combination of technique improvement and match play. I was paired with equally skilled tennis players, so our drills & matches were helpful and fun. In addition, I enjoyed being in a wonderful all-around resort setting (golf, pool, restaurants, sports bar) after playing tennis for five hours each day. Saddlebrook has a warm pleasant atmosphere, so time off the court is very relaxing and enjoyable. Strengths: great instruction, useful drills & games, & physically demanding. Weaknesses: none overall but for more advanced adult players I’d prefer more instruction about strategy & shot selection, more advice about off-court physical training, and more focus on serves & service returns.
AM
I would recommend Saddlebrook for any adult that is serious about improving their stamina and game. I was only able to attend for a weekend, but plan on going back as soon as possible. Everyone on the staff- especially Nona- were exceptional. The pros don’t sugar coat anything about your game, but that was what I was looking for in a clinic. Saddlebrook is an EXCELLENT investment in your game!
JT
The tennis was great! We learn so much and the 5 hours goes by way too fast. The instructors and other people are really nice makes it really fun and a good workout too.
MB
A great tennis experience! Director Howard Moore and the entire professional staff make your stay a fun and positive learning experience. You are well matched for your skill level with changes make when requested. My wife and I were just at Hopman’s for a 2 day min camp and I’ll return for 5 days next year. if you want to learn and improve this is it!
MD
The tennis programme was world class. Coaches were terrific with no more than 4 students per coach. Tennis was intense but exhilarating. My wife and I picked up many tips that will help us become better tennis players. Also met som e very nice people from all over with similar interests. In fact, for many it was a repeat visit to Saddlebrook. If you are looking for an active vacation, this is the place!
MB
Loved the “walking village”. Great food and beautiful setting. Loved having option of 5 hours of tennis. Also liked the demonstrations at the beginning of the day by the pros. Excellent instructors and a good mixture of drills and play. Our 4th visit and will be back.
AC
Saddlebrook Resort was an exceptional experience. I spent the weekend to attend a weekend and was able to attend 2 tennis 1/2 clinics, workout at the fitness center and go to the spa. What a beautiful setting. The tennis pro’s were fantastic!!!
PF
Beautiful setting, outstanding tennis. The pros are excellent diagnosticians and help you make feasible adjustments to your game. Helps to be in good shape before you go — the humidity is deceiving — but no one gave me grief when I said needed to sit. They also made a point of ensuring that the Gatorade cooler was full and urging us to drink plenty of fluids. The food is excellent but expensive and the portions are huge — be careful ordering lunch if you are planning to get on the court soon afterwards! I travelled single and had no problem finding people to hang out with for dinner or at the bar (when I had the energy to do so). Rooms were large and clean — can’t say much more because I came back each evening and collapsed in bed (btw the Saddlebrook bed is deservedly legendary). I hope to come back soon.
TP
Fantastic!! Amazing conceptually, logistically, interpersonally!!! Tennis director available, excellent tailoring to a particular player and a particular context. The setting is ideal. The only weakness is humidity and heat, but those are confined to the summer. Other major strengths are courts will all possible surfaces, good restaurants, and the possibility to catch glimses of the intensive training of tour players.
JC
Saddlebrook resort is extremely well kept and everyone there is friendly and helpful. The tennis instruction was great and I made significan progress in a week. The pairings in the different courts were well done and this allows for good and challenging sessions where you feel motivated to give your best. The staff does a great job on your technique both through the video analysis of your strengths and weaknesses and on the court, understand well your physical condition and provided refreshments throughout the day to help keep us hydrated and energized. I recommend it for any level tennis player that is motivated to improve dramatically his/her game.
NR
I was looking to get my tennis game better and to lose a bit of weight, I achieved both of my goals at Saddlebrook Tennis. Howard Moore is the ultimate Professional. The first day I got there he asked me if I needed anything, I said I usually ice my hand and elbow after playing. Howard comes back 5 minutes later with a huge cooler filled with ice. That is the kind of treatment You get at Saddlebrook. The pros like John,Steve,Vlad, and Marc all worked with me on my game and I was treated like a member of the family. I am coming back for Thanksgiving with a few of my Tennis Friends. I really had a great time at the Saddlebrook Tennis Program and I think it has to be the best Tennis Program in the Country. Super Happy with my Results !!!
WR
Thanks for a great two days of tennis instruction! John, the technician, spotted flaws in my swing that improved my play 100%. Steve, the annalist, took video and broke my strokes down even further, step by step! And then there is Shawn, the bone crusher, drilling through eye opening tactics, how to wear down your opponents; his quote “5 hours with us, and a 1 1/2 hour match will be a piece of cake.” Howard spent 1/2 hour past our time drilling volleys with the enthusiasm ‘real coach’! Well it was well worth it, my wife, my kids had plenty to do at the pool while I filled my day with the game I love!
GT
Much to my liking and beyond my expectations was Saddlebrooks Resort’s intense adult tennis program and accommodations. Having to be able to take advantage of the summer’s special resort and tennis packages my visit was inviting financially as well as desirous to a novice who wishes to improve her performance level within a short period of time(3 days). Specifically, professionalism, expertise, and caring attitde was demonstrated always by the tennis program staff: Howard, Nona, Mark, Steven and of course, my ever patient, most encouraging and supportive coach/instructor, Vlad. The program’s staff w/the help of a video tape evaluation quickly assessed my strengths and weaknesses and placed me in a training program that would improve my tennis skills. The “based on needs” approach and the intensity of the designed personal program was so valuable. Again, w/hardwork and Vlad, I truly believe I did improve as well as also have a list of take home skills to work on. The Saddlebrook Resort provided lodging and services that were most hospitable and accommodating no matter what one requested. The 1-bedroom suite was conveniently located to the tennis courts and the center of things; restaurants, pool area, the spa etc. The modern, attractive furnishings w/ the well-equipped kitchen, and the daily housekeeping was most satisfying. I loved the hot shower, lots of soft towels, beds/sheets as they were so comforting and welcomed @ the end of the 5 hour tennis day. After day one, if it wasn’t for the acommodations, I thought that I better pray for rain because the “old bod” wasn’t going to make it to day two. Also, I loved the touch of having an umbrella in the room! I would also like to thank Pam for that great massage and Chester who showed me the ropes upon arrival.
MT
The Best tennis program! Fully recommend it. Focused, entertaining and relaxing, all at the same time. We participated in the 3 day adult program and we could have stayed for two weeks. The courts were in excellent condition. Steve, our tennis instructor was funny yet demanding and inspiring. Nona, the tennis coordinator was gracious and a great host. They both made us feel like we were back at camp but with a whole lot more luxury!!
CJ
This is my second year to attend the tennis academy at Saddlebrook. The instructors really go the extra mile for the students. Howard Moore, the director, personally stayed an hour after the afternoon session was over to help my husband with his serve. They truely care that the students learn and improve their game. We will be back next year.
AB
I attended a week of Tennis here and it was GREAT! The resort is absolutely awesome, very well kept, true 4-star with great staff and amenities (great Golf!). I’ve never been to any other Tennis camps, but my experience here was fabolous. I got LOTS of court time, good to great instruction and TOTALLY improved my game from 3.0 to almost 4.0 within a week! Only wish I had one instructor for the whole week as it may get confusing with multiple coaches. I was there in early September (low season), it was HOT and rained a bit here or there, but on the positive you may get lucky and get 1:2 and even 1:1 instruction! It’s quite hot and humid though, so make sure your fitness is up there. If you go in low season, make sure you rent a car to get around, and I recommend not going alone as it gets quite boring in the evenings (high season could be different). Overall, a great experience, great resort, very well maintained courts, good organization, friendly staff, perfect instruction for my level of tennis, and reasonable rates. I will definitely go back.
KO
For a resort consistently ranked as top-ten nationally, I was quite disappointed with my experience at Saddlebrook. My particular instructor was technically quite weak, barking instructions from across the net at the group of four 40-50s something women like we were 15 year old boys. I am quite athletic and was interested in learning proper technique, but the others in my group had been playing for years and had no interest in changing their games. The instructor had no ability to adapt to the varying needs of the group. There were other issues with this instructor that I won’t belabor. The strengths of Saddlebrook are the number of hours of court time they have each day. I travelled in early April, a slower time when (according to one woman who had been there many times) many of the more experienced instructors head north. The facilities are beautiful–clay courts which are very well maintained, higher-end accommodations and very nice pools and golf courses. It’s a high-end resort, so if, (like me) you have the midwestern value of wanting to park your own car, or find a bite to eat that won’t cost you an arm and a leg, it’s not easy to do at Saddlebrook. It’s not a great place to travel alone because most people come as groups/families and there are no group activities or real feelings of connection with the instructors or others in the group.
DA
I loved my 5 days at Saddlebrook. As a fairly advanced player who recognized I’ve been doing a number of things technically wrong, I went to Saddlebrook hoping the pros would take the time to deconstruct and rebuild my strokes from the ground up. And that’s just what they did. I was there strictly for the tennis but the resort itself was beautiful with a magnificent pool. I’ll be back next year.
TS
My family stayed at the Saddlebrook Resort in June 2008. We had a great stay there, the setting is beautiful and we were right near the huge swimming pool so it was a short walk from our room to the pool. We were primarily there for our son to attend the tennis camp for a week but my wife, other son, and I enjoyed relaxing by the pool and watching the camp as well. Our 12 yr old son had a very valuable and productive week at the camp. He had a hard time adjusting to the humidity at that time of year so Howard & Nona saw to it that he got the down time and individual attention from one of the coaches, Oscar to work on his game. Oscar was very patient in helping our son improve his 1-handed backhand and he came away with tremendous confidence after camp. Also, the sessions our son had with Saddlebrook’s fitness trainer, Dee, were exhausting but helped him realize that he also needs to work on fitness to improve at the game. In addition, Howard was very kind to help me get some hitting time on the ball machine as I was recuperating from an injury. I also had a chance to work out in the world-class fitness facility that Pat Etchebery uses with many pro athletes. Overall, the attention that Howard Moore (tennis director) and Nona put into making our experience a good one was phenominal and unprecedented. We recommend Saddlebrook resort highly.
KM
My husband and I went to Saddlebrook in January 2009 and loved it so much we returned with our whole family in April. The tennis program was amazing! Nona the tennis coordinator, is a sweetheart! She really works so hard to keep all of the guests happy! She is very dedicated and brings great character to Saddlebrook. Howard, the head director is a great teacher! We were lucky to have him as an instructor and I learned ALOT!
KL
Hopman at Saddlebrook is a great adult vacation and tennis skill building getaway. The hotel / resort is really very good (spacious, clean and modern rooms well decorated and maintained), onsite restaurants far better than you might expect and service is generally very responsive. Tennis with Hopman is plenty aggressive for 30+ adults (five hours on the courts each day leaves most completely exhausted) and the pros are very very good. All surfaces available, including grass (limited timeframes it seems). Court maintenance is very good. The har-tru courts dry out in the afternoons (those without underground watering). I like that you stay with the same pro for multi-day visits.
AS
Excellent condos and facilities.
HG
I have been to the Saddlebrook Resort for the tennis camps for the last 7 years and I keep coming back year after year. The staff here is exceptional. The pros work with you on whatever needs improvement in your game. They are open to suggestions as to what you want to work on and are not rigid as to a specific schedule that they follow. The staff at the office is amazing. They remember your name when you come in and it makes you feel special when someone sees you and welcomes you by name. I have been to several tennis camps and this is the only one that I would recommend to anyone that asks.
AU
I have played tennis at over 6 different tennis resorts and I always come back to Saddlebook. The Hopman tennis program is far superior to any other tennis program out there. The morning and afternoon sessions are intense, educational and fun! The pros are extremely knowledgeable and skilled instructors. Howard, Nona and Gervis are exceptional. Their adult camps are well run and informative. The grounds are beautiful. I cannot recommend the Hopman Tennis program enough. I will be back next year!
KH
adult tennis coordinator, Nona, was great. she accommodated everyone’s desire without compromising other’s needs. The tennis pro, Shawn McGee, was best I have ever had. He assess’s every player’s strength and weakness, and works to improve the weakness with firm discpline, yet makes you feel very comfortable, rather than intimidating. I definitely plan to go back there in near future
WC
This is my 6th trip to Saddlebrook during the past 3 years. I participated in 5 days of tennis, which I think is an optimum number. Strengths: 1. Howard Moore, program director and Nona Wagh, are very responsive to players needs and make sure that players are happy with their groups. One morning, I was placed with a group that was below my level and I raised my concerns and after lunch, I was switched to a higher level group. 2. As always, its a treat training under Howard who is an exceptional coach. In a few minutes, he can assess your stroke deficiencies, and improve them whether the problems are with the grip, back swing, follow through, footwork, etc. 3. Daily demonstrations of the various strokes by Howard and his team provide good visual effect of what one should be doing. 4. I liked the fact that I was with 4 different tennis pros in 5 days because I got different perspectives from all of them and worked with different drills. 5. Drinks and fruits provided during the clinics are welcome. But it seems that they dont provide daily towels anymore! 6. The restaurant and spa are excellent although pricey. 7. The Saddlebrook grounds is very nice, has a big pool and a poolside cafe. 8. Saddlebrook resort is an easy 30-50 minutes drive, depending on rush hour traffic, from Tampa airport.
Weaknesses: 1. The quality of tennis instructions do vary from pros to pros. Some pros may suit a player’s needs better than others. For example, some pros may only do drills without providing much instruction on stroke development, while others may do both, etc. Thus, in order to maximize your satisfaction from the tennis camp, you should be aware of what you want to achieve from the camp, be it tennis drills, stroke development, more instructions, burning calories, etc!!! 2. The quality of housekeeping can be improved. 3. The on site restaurant has added a few new items in their menu which is a small step in the right direction.
KU
Director Howard Moore is an exceptional teacher and runs a great camp. He and his assistant Nona are terrific at making sure you are placed with players of your ability provided that you speak up and tell them politely what your needs are. I was the only one in my group at my advanced ability so I always needed to be placed on a court without my other friends and it worked out great because of Howard and Nona’s attention to detail. Howard was also exceptional in teaching me how to improve my strokes without trying to make me start over and completely redo everything. He is an excellent pro. Only weakness of the place is there are some pros who arent as exceptional as Howard and if you get one of them, your experience can be less than ideal.
JF
They are so responsive to the needs of each player. I was looking for more drills and less strategy work and I told them afte the morning session. When I got back from lunch I was in another group practicing drills!
CM
This was the best tennis experience I have ever had. Great instuction. Got moved around to different instuctors to get work on each area of my game. Great staff, great setting. I have already booked to go back for three weeks this summer. Can’t say enough great stuff about this place.
TM
Excellent instructors that help all parts of your game. Well organized, excellent facilities in all regards.
LR
I just returned from a 3 day trip to Saddlebrook as part of the Hopman camp. It was a great trip! Five hours a day of very good tennis, nice accommodations, lovely grounds, great staff. I definitely recommend it. The instruction was awesome. In just 3 days, I picked up a lot of tips that will help improve my game. Even in warm up, they immediately pointed out things I was doing wrong so I could correct them (don’t want to ingrain bad habits). I went solo, and was very comfortable. There were other solo travelers there as well. Everyone was very friendly, and had the opportunity to be social and hang out with others, or have a quiet time in my suite (very nice one bedroom suite). Food was tasty and the wait staff very friendly and helpful. Some of the pros were practicing when I was there (James Blake and Martina Hingis and others). The staff let us know the pros were practicing and arranged a shuttle to take us to another group of courts so we could watch the practice. Nona, the coordinator, very good about placing people in groups of similar skill levels and with the right pros for their personalities and respective game styles. I really appreciated her efforts to make sure everyone was happy and was getting the best instruction possible. I hope to get back very soon, and recommend it to anyone who wants a tennis vacation. Solo, with friends, with spouse or family (they have lots of activities for kids too).
SH
This is the best Tennis Camp for intermediate players. They really work you hard and it is fun to play so well.
CL
Excellent teaching on the court, with energy and enthusiasm; extremely well organized; good for adults and juniors, travelling as a family
SW
Just back from a weekend of Hopman Tennis Camp at Saddlebrook with 2 friends. This was our second consecutive annual trip. Cannot say enough positive about the whole experience. It’s extremely well organized, the instruction is top notch (we had Oskar and Scott) and they will push you as far as you want. The accommodations were very nice, ours was a clean, spacious 2 bedroom suite with a kitchenette, extremely clean with excellent maid service. The instructors did an excellent job keeping us all engaged all the time while also pausing to provide individual attention as necessary. I left there with about 3 or 4 points that, if I improve on them, will make a considerable difference on my game. The Breakfast provided is also excellent. The only thing I can tink to complain about is that the massage service at the Spa, while excellent, is overpriced. We will be going back to Saddlebrook for years to come. the quality of the experience does not make you want to try anything else.
MG
The Saddlebrook experience was fantastic. Great setting, outstanding coaching/teaching, and a wonderful facility. I look forward to going back.
WP
Tremendous on court coaching matched with outstanding fitness training. Perfect balance. I’ve taken my high school tennis team to Saddlebrook for a number of years and I couldnt ask for better preparation for the season. They are able to match all ability levels and push each individual to their fullest potential.
DD
I used to be a lone golfer in a tennis family, however, thanks to Saddlebrook tennis instruction I have learned the game and developed a strong interest and passion for the game. I am now playing 3.5 USTA team tennis. My family continues to attend Saddlebrook tennis training 1 to 2 times per year and they just love the program. Our kids have directly benefited from the instruction and fitness drills. Success of the student is important to the teaching pros! The pros are knowledgeable, motivated and excellent communicators. They can immediately indentify and offer tips to improve weak areas of your game and offer ways to capitalize on your strengths. If you come with a goal in mind, you will leave fully satisfied! While at Saddlebrook, I only hope you have the chance to meet the excellent group of teaching pros like Howard, Craig B., Alvaro, Ed D., Oscar, Martin, Lee, Tai, Nona, Larry, Mark, John F and Vlad. Just a great group of people and talent at your finger-tips! Now get to Saddlebrook! Play some tennis and have a great time!
RA
I wish to laud Saddlebrook Tennis once again. I have been there 3 times and each time I have left with complete satisfaction with both the tennis program and the resort in general. It is an ideal holiday for the type A tennis type and non tennis spouse. While I toiled in the mid-day sun my wife luxuriated sittling around the pool reading the New York times.
TA
I am a 5.0 ex college player, aged 28. I just spent 7 days at Sadllebrook and i found it intense and detail orientated even for high level players. The intensity of the drills on court and the attention for details make you legs work hard. The program is specifically designed to address technique and tactics for singles and doubles from the very basics to the very specifics thanks to the long term international experience of the pros. Howard Moore and his team make sure that, in addition to the group lessons, each player is looked on an individual basis in order to address his specific needs. This combination makes the program unique and a top class experience. As i said the intensity is high and the program is demanding from a physical and a mental perspective so be ready and prepared to work hard. It was also a bonus to see James Blake, Gabashvili and others training and playing. I have been in different camps and playing for 20 years now and i don’t see anything which can be compared to this in the world.
NW
This is without doubt the best tennis resort for adults. It has everything. Huge number of courts in very good condition, a very good coaching programme that is designed to ensure that everybody gets the best out of their invested time and money. We have been going there for a number of years and intend to continue doing so.
NG
I’ve taken talented junior players–both male and female–to the Hopman Tennis program as part of a spring break training program for the better part of 20 years now. As always, the on-court experience is first-rate; my players get the chance to hit lots of balls in an effort to scrape the rust off at the end of a Northeastern winter. They get good coaching and some useful match play simulation in the course of their week at Saddlebrook. What’s clearly improved in recent years is the quality of the accommodation and the food for the junior players. Saddlebrook and the Hopman Tennis program clearly have worked at raising their game and it shows. Highly recommended.

I have mixed feelings about the tennis instruction. I thought there was too much emphasis on stroke mechanics as opposed to point play and strategy; on the other hand I did not fuss about it and went along with what they were doing and I must admit my strokes are more consistent than before. The accomodations are very good, and the breakfast buffet is wonderful. One annoyance is that your car is confiscated upon checkin and you must use the valet every time you want to leave the resort for dinner, etc. I will definitely return but next time will be more forceful about what I want to work on.

Saddlebrook is the best place to go for thorough tennis instruction in “tennis haven”. We stayed a couple days longer this trip & it really helped to solidify what Steve was teaching me. Very Professional training. I learned so many new tips, and put them to use immediately. (The beautiful weather was a bonus!!)

This was my second trip to Saddlebrook to participate in the Hopman Tennis clinics. My return visit was equally good. The pro to player ratio was between 3-4 to 1 and the level of instruction for me a a 4.0 rating was excellent. In particular Sean, my instructor, for much of the 3 day trip was extremely helpful to my game. The food was good, although access to some of the resorts restaurants for dinner was difficult at times due to the several weddings taking place. Everyone at the resort was very friendly and it was easy to make friendships with other players in the tennis programs. The tennis facilities were well groomed and maintainned. Having the opportunity to play on both red clay and grass courts was an added bonus. Returning to my home town club, I felt my game had improved as a result of my Saddlebrook trip. I look forward to returning next year again.

Over the past 3 years, my family has visited Saddlebrook 5 times and we have never been disappointed in our stay. The tennis instruction has been great and we have always come away feeling like the pros were truly interested in seeing you improve. Nona has done a great job organizing the tennis and making sure you are happy with your court and pro. I would highly recommend Saddlebrook for your next tennis vacation.

I recently went to the Saddlebrook Hopman Tennis Program for the Christmas and New Year’s break and was extremely pleased and thrilled with the overall tennis camp and my vacation there. My tennis game improved to a great extent and I had a blast with all the new friends made, doing what we all enjoy most: tennis. The coaching I received was outstanding. The instructors were very patient and helpful in improving all aspects of my game. The instruction they provided was super and helped bring my game to the next level, technically, mentally and physically. Although I occasionally switched instructing pros throughout my 2 week stay, all of them focused on the little details that make the big difference in the game, provided different perspectives of my game and all of them brought on the court their enthusiasm and passion. The lessons learned from the world-class pros not only improved my game over the two weeks spent there, they were instructions that I could take away to apply long term, to continuously improve my game. The Saddlebrook resort was luxurious. Apart from the delightful scenery, there were plenty of activities to enjoy in the afternoon after enduring tough day on the courts. Playing on the varying court surfaces (har-tru, red clay and even grass) was very exciting and a great experience. The planned nightly activities, pool and hot tub, basketball and volleyball courts were all an excellent way of relaxing or enjoying a free-time afternoon with all my active friends. The meals were always delicious and perfect after a tennis session. The rooms were exceptional and satisfying for a well-deserved rest after a fully packed day. The highlight of my trip was spending some time training with the program director Howard Moore. Howard’s (along with all the other instructors’) leadership and enthusiasm truly make this camp one of the best in the world. This was an experience of a lifetime and I am surely planning a visit back to the Saddlebrook Tennis Program. Dave C., Canada

Took my 3rd trip to Hopman program in mid-January and it actually exceeded my previous visits. Participation on the first day seemed to be much lower than my experiences in previous years with only ~10 people there on Friday. But i was in luck with two of them being 4.5 players on my court who matched up well with me. The instruction was once again superb with Alban and Shaun doing a great job on court with us. Plus we were given 20 min private lessons each by Shaun to work on whatever we wanted to work on. We also did some video analysis of our strokes which was terrific and the instructors provided lots of good feedback on what we needed to work on. Once again, the excellent leadership of Howard Moore shines thru and makes this a second-to-none tennis program. Can’t wait for my next trip back.

I spent two full days in the adult tennis program at Saddlebrook. I learned so much there, I believe my game is going to be transformed. My instructor was Scott Brooke. He was simply outstanding and tireless. He worked us hard and he identified specific aspects of my shots that I could improve. I came home and wrote a full page of things I learned from Scott that I’m going to put in practice. Also, Nona, the lady who matches up students with instructors, is also an amazing Saddlebrook employee. She has an remarkable ability to remember everyone’s name and she is very flexible and driven to achieve customer satisfaction.

We have been to the Saddlebrook Tennis Resort many times and we always have a great time. Their is sometihing for every age and all levels of player. The program offers daily half or full day tennis clinics with great pros and no more than 4 people on a court at once.
The tennis was great! We learn so much and the 5 hours goes by way too fast. The instructors and other people are really nice makes it really fun and a good workout too.
Loved the “walking village”. Great food and beautiful setting. Loved having option of 5 hours of tennis. Also liked the demonstrations at the beginning of the day by the pros. Excellent instructors and a good mixture of drills and play. Our 4th visit and will be back.
Saddlebrook Resort was an exceptional experience. I spent the weekend to attend a weekend and was able to attend 2 tennis 1/2 clinics, workout at the fitness center and go to the spa. What a beautiful setting. The tennis pro’s were fantastic!!!
This is my second year to attend the tennis academy at Saddlebrook. The instructors really go the extra mile for the students. Howard Moore, the director, personally stayed an hour after the afternoon session was over to help my husband with his serve. They truely care that the students learn and improve their game. We will be back next year.
Excellent condos and facilities.
I will be back next year!
adult tennis coordinator, Nona, was great. she accommodated everyone’s desire without compromising other’s needs. The tennis pro, Shawn McGee, was best I have ever had. He assess’s every player’s strength and weakness, and works to improve the weakness with firm discpline, yet makes you feel very comfortable, rather than intimidating. I definitely plan to go back there in near future
This is my 6th trip to Saddlebrook during the past 3 years. I participated in 5 days of tennis, which I think is an optimum number.
Strengths:
Weaknesses:
They are so responsive to the needs of each player. I was looking for more drills and less strategy work and I told them afte the morning session. When I got back from lunch I was in another group practicing drills!
This was the best tennis experience I have ever had. Great instuction. Got moved around to different instuctors to get work on each area of my game. Great staff, great setting. I have already booked to go back for three weeks this summer. Can’t say enough great stuff about this place.
Excellent instructors that help all parts of your game. Well organized, excellent facilities in all regards.
This is the best Tennis Camp for intermediate players. They really work you hard and it is fun to play so well.
Excellent teaching on the court, with energy and enthusiasm; extremely well organized; good for adults and juniors, travelling as a family
The Saddlebrook experience was fantastic. Great setting, outstanding coaching/teaching, and a wonderful facility. I look forward to going back.
Tremendous on court coaching matched with outstanding fitness training. Perfect balance. I’ve taken my high school tennis team to Saddlebrook for a number of years and I couldnt ask for better preparation for the season. They are able to match all ability levels and push each individual to their fullest potential.
This is without doubt the best tennis resort for adults. It has everything. Huge number of courts in very good condition, a very good coaching programme that is designed to ensure that everybody gets the best out of their invested time and money. We have been going there for a number of years and intend to continue doing so.
