Saddlebrook Resort has a well-deserved reputation for staging one of the most—if not, the most—demanding tennis programs on the planet. The underlying philosophy owes much to the training techniques of the legendary Australian Davis Cup coach and notorious taskmaster Harry Hopman. His was a taxing regimen designed at once to improve technique and push the envelope of his charge’s stamina and endurance. That reputation for toughness draws aspiring juniors to its academy and committed adults, the latter attracted to the blend of rigorous workouts and Saddlebrook’s full resort amenities.
Saddlebrook Resort garnered awards for its design when it opened in 1981. The 480-acre layout, 25 miles north of Tampa, places the lodging, restaurants, shops, a lakesize swimming pool, tennis courts, spa, golf clubhouse, and meeting rooms at the center of a halo of golf fairways, condos, and residential neighborhoods. Centralizing all of the major amenities creates what they call a “Walking Village.” Foliage is lush, ponds and lakes dot the property, and birds are abundant, including several endangered species for which this is a refuge and a rookery.
This is hardly the setting you’d expect for the mother of all hard-core tennis camps, but having all those amenities provides relief from the rigors of the daily regimen while its guard gate provides privacy and security—one reason touring pros visit between tournaments to work on their games. Its juniors, both live-in and short term, hope the program will set them on the road to greatness (or at least a college scholarship), while adults come looking to get in shape, test their physical mettle, or perhaps search for a magic elixir to cure, once and for all, the flaws in their game. It is also often true that the adults frequently underestimate the physical demands a program like this makes, and that even though none has ever in his or her life played five hours of tennis a day, they somehow think they are ready for five hours a day of drills.
Although the historical philosophy of the program has to push you to the point that your game breaks down, find what is salvageable in the rubble, and rebuild from there. That said, after my last visit I came away thinking that this approach has mellowed somewhat in recent years. In my early participation in the Hopman program, as it was known then, I remember being chastised for ignoring a feed too wide for me to reach, only to have the next fed wider until I learned that it was crucial to make an attempt even when you thought you had no chance of reaching the balls. I remember, too, the so-called “bucket of ball” drills and “kamikaze” drills that had you scampering right and left and back again until you pleaded exhaustion or the pro was convinced you’d had enough.
My sense is that while the regimen remains demanding, the boot-camp approach has been abandoned. None of the pros on my latest visit adopted an in-your-face drill sergeant’s demeanor (though I was told that if that’s what you want, it is available). Instead, they established key concepts essential to hitting well—early preparation, eyes on the ball, full follow-through—and then ran drills and competitive exercises to put those concepts into practice. Still, there were times when we were grateful for the break afforded by the need to pick up balls.
Although there are exceptions, you typically stay with the same pro throughout your stay (barring his or her days off), so they oversee your progress first-hand. They tailor the work to the abilities of the campers they oversee. Rather than stand in one place and hit picture-perfect strokes, you pretty much have to run for every ball. Like the pros, you’ll do a lot of two-on-one drills, and if your skills permit it live-ball drills and competitive games with the other campers on your court. The process can be exhilarating, demoralizing, or both, but you will come away from this program knowing where you stand with respect to your aerobic conditioning and what you really need to do to take your game to the next level.
If courts alone were the measure of a great tennis resort, then Saddlebrook would rank near the top. It has 45 courts altogether, including hard, clay, red clay, Rebound Ace (the surface formerly used at the Australian Open) and grass, all of which—the grass included—are available to guests. The major complex is near the center of the resort. There is a secondary complex a mile away in Lakeside Village, which is also the site of the 3,000-square-foot fitness center and high-performance complex and where the juniors enrolled in the academy work out. All of the courts are laid out in clusters of two to five separated by an awning-covered patio furnished with chairs and a refrigerated water fountain.
Tennis Staff: Although Harry Hopman, the legendary Australian Davis Cup coach, died in 1985, the organization he built survives. The core group of staff, many longtime Saddlebrook pros, expands and contracts based on how many adults are enrolled in the programs—as many as are needed to keep the student:pro ratio at 4:1 of less.
Tennis Programs: Although the resort itself offers some perfunctory stroke-of-the-day clinics (run by tennis-academy staff), the real reason a tennis player would come here is the Hopman-inspired camps.
Unlike some other dedicated facilities and college-campus programs, Hopman’s does not include any meals in the package, so for other dining you’re left to fend for yourself at the quite good but pricey restaurants at the resort itself or pile into cars for trips beyond the resort. Caveat: The Saddlebrook program can be among the most physically demanding of all the camps, so start a workout regimen weeks before you come down. Bring two pairs of tennis shoes, several changes of clothes (washers and dryers are available in each lodging cluster), a hat, sunblock, two racquets if you have them (broken strings are commonplace), and overgrip.
Off Court
Golf Courses: Saddlebrook has two 18-hole courses, both designed by Arnold Palmer, and an Arnold Palmer Golf Academy. Tee times for any of the following courses can be reserved.
Palmer Course: This course is characterized by open, undulating fairways, and an abundance of lakes, streams and ponds. Par: 71. Length: 5,212-6,469 yards.
Saddlebrook Course: Though flatter than the Palmer course, this one is also tighter, with tree-lined fairways and water on most of its holes. Par: 70. Length: 5,183-6,603 yards.
Spa & Fitness Center: The 7,000-square-foot Spa in the walking village has 12 treatment rooms offering massages, hydrotherapy treatments, and some beauty services; however, it is currently closed. Campers who can still walk at the end of the day are welcome to use the 3,300-square-foot, state-of-the-art fitness center in Lakeside Village, a 10-minute walk from the Superpool, but it’s rate that anyone does so. It has a full line of Cybex equipment plus treadmills, stair steppers, recumbent bicycles, elliptical trainers, and rubber-encased freeweights all in rooms with views of a swimming pool or volley ball pit. Personal trainers are on hand to help you craft a workout regimen. There is also an adjacent high-performance sports center, which offers specialized training programs often to professional athletes.
The centerpiece of the resort is its half-million-gallon, amoeba-shaped Superpool, said to be the largest in Florida. At 270 feet long, it is vast enough to contain a 25-meter lap pool, water volleyball and water basketball courts, and a diving area. Around it are children’s wading pools and two heated whirlpools. There is another swimming pool near the Sports Village & Fitness Center. Otherwise, recreation run to bike trails around the property and bass fishing in the privately stocked lakes.
Children's programs: The S’Kids Club operates year round providing supervised activities for kids ages 4-12.
Dining: The TD’s Sports Bar has light fare and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Dempsey’s Steakhouse is currently closed; however it’s menu prime beef and seafood is available at TD’s Sports Bar. There’s also a pool bar for lunch and poolside cocktails.
Accommodations
There are a total of 790 rooms and suites at Saddlebrook, most of them in 50-unit clusters variously arrayed near the main clubhouse and pool, or out along the golf fairways. Each cluster has an ice machine and washer/dryer. The most basic accommodation is a hotel room with two double beds and a private balcony or patio. The alternatives are one- and two-bedroom suites (which anywhere else would be called condos). These have full kitchens (with coffee makers and dishwashers; most have microwaves, if not you can request one), separate living and dining areas, and one or two bedrooms, each with a full bath. The living room opens onto a patio or balcony. High-speed Internet access is available throughout the resort.
Anyone who enrolls in the Saddlebrook International Tennis program is eligible for discounted room rates. By booking tennis and lodging together, you get a deluxe guest room, 5 hours/day of intensive tennis, complimentary court time, daily lunch, and access to the fitness center and spa. One- and two-bedroom suites with full kitchens are also available.
Getting there
Seasons: The resort and its Hopman tennis programs operate year-round; however, given the grueling nature of these clinics, you should think twice about coming in summer—unless, of course, you want to work out in hot, humid conditions. Principally for that reason, the camps are generally two to three times larger during the fall, winter, and spring than in summer.
Excellent teaching; great pros; Will definitively go back.
AM
In a nutshell – outstanding family trip – This was the best tennis vacation I have had: we all IMPROVED, all had fun, and all want to go back as soon as possible! Some specifics: Our group was one adult and 2 children. We have been to other tennis camps (intense, 4-5 hours per day) in the northeast and enjoyed them greatly, but I am speechless as to the quality of Hopman. I improved so much and so did the children – I’ve never returned from a trip feeling such a sense of accomplishment. I actually FIXED several bad habits! And I know what I need to work on next. I think the number one reason is the quality of the pros. They are definitely a notch above; they are not just professional players but professional teachers. All are so well grounded in fundamentals, amazing teaching resumes, really dedicated to teaching and making each person better, able to adapt their teaching style to different learning styles within the same group. High energy, positive, invested. Bottom line – they are serious about their teaching and they are effective. I spent several days there and had a chance to work with several. A few people to mention in particular: Larry, amazing with kids of all ages and abilities and dispositions – a truly gifted teacher in all aspects of the game, physical and mental, I can’t say enough good stuff about him. My kids benefited greatly from his efforts and he was a real star feature of our trip. Also great with video critique and making you really understand body mechanics. Farley, awesome teacher, really able to work with a group with incredibly different playing styles, understand each players issues, and work each drill or session to make each person feel like they are getting a private lesson level of attention/focus. Jaime, great with kids and adults, he comes across as gentle and patient but he is tireless and focused on fundamentals – so good at changing bad habits. AJ – again, so good at changing bad habits and bringing my technique up a notch, great energy and encouraging attitude, picks out one problem at a time, fixes it, moves on, he works hard yet never breaks a sweat. Rob – great with kids and adults, rapid fire drills, he is a perfectionist, always encouraging but he has eagle eyes and never misses anything, I think he can get any advanced player to improve. Justin – I worked briefly with him – another tried and proven professional at identifying problems and improving them – I learned many new concepts in doubles from him that I can’t wait to use at home. Not sure of spelling – Ty / Thai / Tai – he was monitoring everying and making sure things were progressing smoothly – he is on top of stuff, making sure every one is on the right court with the right group and right pro – he will swoop in for 5 minutes and provide really key advice. Tennis facilities – the courts were immaculately maintained. The balls are very good quality, none flat. Well stocked with water and gatorade and towels at each court. Lodging – very nice and clean. Mattresses and sheets super comfortable. We stayed in a condo unit with kitchen. Kitchen was a bit under-furnished for people who want to cook the majority of their meals (maybe it was only our unit, but for example, only teaspoons in drawer, no soup size or larger size spoons). General location – super easy to and from Tampa International Airport! Environment – loved seeing alligators!, plentiful egrets, falcons (peregrine falcon stood 6 feet from our porch!!), ibis, woodpeckers, herons, and all sorts of East Coast birds (cardinals…). Next time I plan to bring to bring my binoculars and bird books and walk the golf cart paths! Amenities – pool was lovely, kids enjoyed so much after a long day of tennis. It is very large, most of it not too deep, and well situated so adults can relax at tables/chairs or near a bar while watching kids. Pool-side ‘store’ had some key items we were missing like arm floaties and toys and sunscreen. I wish they had swimming lessons for kids possible. Spa was very professionally run, a real treasure. We did not use any golf facilities. Food – Each restaurant is actually quite different, so if you don’t care for the food at one, don’t pass off on trying others. Dempsey’s Too (closer to the spa and main office) was our favorite. Great grouper sandwich and soup. Tennis pro shop – very well stocked on supplies and ready to string a racquet on short notice. My only request (if the market supports) would be more diverse brand offerings in women’s clothes, and more kids sizes. Staff – I never had a poor interaction with anyone, from valet to main desk to bell hop — all were excellent, professional. Overall, I have no criticism of our stay here. I was happy and the kids were happy. The pros were a real notch above. We all improved our game significantly and we all can’t wait to go back.

Saddlebrook Resort offers a terrific tennis experience. That is why I have been going there annually for the last few years. My practice is to train for five days and take a day off in the middle of my stay. The five-hour tennis programme is demanding, without being overly regimented. Instruction is available at all levels, for adults and children. The instructors will take you as far as you want to go and, if you feel the group to which you have been assigned is not appropriate, management is open to moving you from one group to another. This year, my tennis was enriched by the personal attention of Justin, Zora and Howard. Overall, a great vacation that allows for actively improving the quality of one’s game. An added bonus is the variety of wildlife, especially water birds and wintering birds, on the property.

I have been to this adult camp many times and I am always impressed with the teaching staff. All of them are very enthusiastic about improving your game/ strokes and they don’t give up on you! Tai and Sean have been particularly helpful as well as Larry. They gage your level accurately and provide the right coach for whatever they see you need. I would recommend this camp strongly for anyone of any level !
KM
We all applaud the enthusiastic and professional tennis staff who coordinated a fabulous tennis experience according to my team’s level, interests and schedules. A wonderful Women’s Tennis Getaway for drills, fun and fitness. Trying to coordinate this group vacation was a bit difficult in regards to communicating with the resort supervisor. Once we received all the rooming and instructional details, it was a pleasure. When we arrived, check in was a bit unorganized but we enjoyed the stay tremendously. Getting taxis for off site travel was almost impossible. Food and drinks and staff on site were great.
KH
Instructor Zora Vlckova made my experience at Saddlebrook extraordinary. This deadly lefty was patient, thorough, and enthusiastic as she worked on my strokes. We did drills, had a lot of laughs, and learned a great deal on the courts during the three days I was there. I can’t wait to return for more learning and fun.
BW
first let me say i’ve only been playing tennis ten years and started late in life, but I love it. now that i’ve retired i try to play daily. i’ve always enjoyed my lessons and clinics and i’m constantly trying new venues. in the top 50 i’ve tried six. BUT, i always come back to Saddlebrook. we’re not beach people and the surrounding area gives the wife and children and grandchildren options and for the last five years we have done the Thanksgiving week, where i do 5hrs on the crts and the girls go shopping, to the theater, exploring local sites and restaurants (three great restaurants on site, we do the thanksgiving buffet every year). Howard Moore and his staff push you and tweak you without bruising your ego. If you want to improve your game and have a pleasant outing with family and friends try it. if you get a chance remember to look me up next Thanksgiving, Lord Willing i’ll be there.

I came here with my husband and three children to play tennis and visit family in the area. We absolutely loved the 3 hour daily morning tennis program. The tennis staff were for the most part very professional and knowledgeable about tennis. For people who love tennis this is a dream resort. We were all in tennis heaven. There were a few tennis instructors who stood out. Zora was fabulous. I wish I could have had her for more days. She gave me a great workout. The kids loved Tai and we were absolutely thrilled to be able to have a fabulous tennis clinic for the children completely in Spanish with Jaime. Rob kept kept the intensity high. Mike forever changed my forehand and gave me excellent tips to take with me. I would recommend that if you are participating in the tennis clinic you be very proactive about exactly what you are looking for when organizing your tennis experience. I wish I had been more proactive. We were disappointed about the continuous usage of single use plastic water bottles. It would be more cost effective to supply a reusable bottle and have water coolers. We dutifully hung our towels up yet they supplied fresh ones every day. Yet the sheets were not clean when we checked in.
BB
Have been there 6 times over the years and have loved it every time. Staff has changed a lot since I first attended, but Howard always made it fun and always tries to be accomodating to individual needs. The entire staff is friendly and the resort is very nice, especially the pool! If you want to hit a lot of balls and meet some nice people at the same time, you can’t go wrong with Saddlebrook!
WR
This is as hard core a tennis program as you desire. They will put you thru it or let you “vacation” thru…your choice. Eager to please. Justin was fun.
AJ
Saddlebrook is one of the finest vacation experiences we have had. World-class tennis instruction for both adults and juniors, both experienced and beginners. Staff are so friendly and accommodating.
NH
Definitely THE best tennis vacation of my life. Friendly & accommodating tennis staff. An outstanding leader in Howard Moore who sees to it that you get what you want from the Academy sessions….Howard is a hospitality professonal that cant be found even in teh best 5* resorts. Due to the intesity of repition, the key thing you will come away with is a better feel for the ball with increased confidence in your strokes.
RB
Went to Saddlebrook a few days ago for a long tennis weekend. I’ve been many times and it never fails to impress! Worked with AJ and Justin this last time who were both excellent and very positive. They really helped me with my serve which is an area I struggle with. We even played some social mixed doubles with Zora–a pro we’ve worked with before–but who was kind enough to give us a game after hours:)
JS
My wife and I just returned from Saddlebrook. We did three days of the adult tennis camp with another couple. The instruction was excellent. The instructors were committed to helping each of us improve our technique and understanding of each stroke. Because of the small groups each of us had one on one time with various instructors where we got great feedback. We particularly thought that Mike and Justin were terrific. They cared about our progress, worked us hard but also made it fun. We will definitely return and hopefully soon!
SS
Excellent instruction!! Great time, tons of exercise, we will be back 🙂
CS
We had a great 4 days hete. Our instructor Zora Vlckova did a amazing job teach us how to master many strokes. She cover all the strokes we needed to know and serving. She did a great job breaking it down step by step how to hit each stroke. I really enjoy having her and it was a great benefit to my game. I will definately come back and recommend her and Saddlebrook. Larry did a great job with the video analysis. He broke it down what I need to work on. It was very helpful and will improve going forward .
RR
I went to Saddlebrook with two girlfriends to celebrate my 50th birthday doing what we love— playing tennis. We were not disppointed! We stepped into a lush tropical paradise with a very attentive staff throughout. The tennis courts were very well maintained and the instructors we met were very thorough and analytical. Our personal Pro, Zora, was able to pinpoint the areas where I needed improvement the most and in a few days help me improve my game. The video analysis was especially helpful in allowing me to understand where I needed improvement. All in all an excellent tennis camp! I was also able to e joy the Spa, pool and hot tubs as a much needed recovery routine. Over it all!
SB
Great tennis experience! The Hopman tennis program certainly is for players who really want to improve their games. My coach Zora Vlckova was outstanding. She was great at working with my strokes and tuning them to perfection. She was really determined to make a difference. I will surely bring many new tips for my game back home. Overall the staff was very friendly and attentive. Howard, Shawn, Tai and their tennis crew are doing an excellent job. I highly recommend anyone looking for a tennis vacation to come to Saddlebrook; you won’t be disappointed. Besides tennis Saddlebrook has a really outstanding pool area and great restaurants. I will definitely come back!
SS
The best tennis instruction I have ever had. Intense and focused. Changed my game for the better…..loved our relentless instructor Justin….everything was top notch. All the coaches were extremely professional, supportive and they all seemed to be working together to make the experience the best it could possibly be. Apart from the humidity I loved it. Can’t wait to go back.
MB
I highly recommend Saddlebrook’s tennis program. I am about a 3.0 ladies player, and member of the NY Athletic Club (NYAC). I learned a tremendous amount from the Saddlebrook coaches, and enjoyed personalized attention beyond what I’d imagined. I am so pumped to use what I learned in my tennis back home, and confident that I’ve gained skills (& tricks!) that will improve my game significantly.
DK
Had a wonderful experience both on the tennis court and at the resort. Had an opportunity to work with Zora Vlckova and found her to be an outstanding tennis professional. I definitely feel that my game has improved as a result of her advice and instruction and my experience at Saddlebrook.
JK
Excellent facility with great coaching. Specifically, a young female instructor Zora was outstanding. She was knowledgeable, patient, very pleasant, provide excellent coaching and significantly improved my game. I would highly recommend her as an instructor and will ask for her in the future.
PK
Excellent instruction. Second time back. I have been to the top 5 camps in the US. All are very good, but Saddlebrook teaches the most. The instructors pay attention to form, stroke, legwork, serve, volley, etc. The other camps focus more on drills. Not much in correcting bad habits. The clay courts are beautiful and well maintained. Temperature in Tampa can get hot. The resort is worn and aged but adequate and clean. Nice fitness center and pool. Breakfast is the best meal. Adequate lunch. Dempsey steakhouse for dinner. Good restaurants close by. Watching an under 18 yo tournament this past weekend was a plus. Many of the kids had perfect form.
KM
I just returned from a 3 day/2 night quickie trip to Saddlebrook Resort for the main purpose of working on my tennis game, but also wanted some much needed R& R . I did some preliminary checking and this place sounded awesome. Let me tell you, it did NOT disappoint on any level. The tennis instruction was top-notch. They work you hard, (so be prepared), but they are there to help you on whatever your tennis needs may be. My instructor, Justin, was exactly what I needed. He was tough, but he was fun, and he worked with me to improve many aspects of my game in just the 3 days I had with him. The class sizes are small (no more than 4 to an instructor), and sometimes you even have one on one time with them. I can’t say enough about the instructional staff. They are excellent in every way. The facilities are simply outstanding. The grounds are manicured and picturesque. The 500,000 gallon pool is a welcome respite after the hours spent on the on court and the accommodations were everything depicted on the website. Could not have been happier with my stay. Already planning my return visit with members of my team coming back with me!
PW
Saddlebrook Resort has an amazing staff. Our groop of 11 had 3 instructors. All instructors were excellent. 1. The best was Justin. He was gregarious, instructive, to the point. Learned a lot. Just enough stores to make it fun. Rob was great as well. Also learned a lot. Especially loved his rapid fire drills. Just a tad too many stories. We saw them as time wasted. I learned a lot from Mike as well. My forehand will never be the same. He was a little rough around the edges, and our group either loved him or was frustrated by him, but with a little guidance, I think he will present himself well in the future. He REALLY wanted us to get better! Howard, who heads the program was a wonderful and colorful part of our experience. i cannot wait to go back!
KH
I learned the most I ever learned this trip. I mostly contribute this to The pro Mike! He explained things so clearly that it was easy to learn. I have been drilling for 20 years and wish the pros would of told me the things Mike did. My partner and I did an extra drill with Mike on strategy that was awesome. I am a 3.0 and I had a 3.5 match yesterday on 2nd court and won 6-1 6-1 and the fist thing we did was texted Mike and thanked him! We did have 2 other woman that just started tennis and don’t really drill, that may have complained about Mike but they should not of complained! Mike is very passionate with his teaching, witch I love, and they misunderstood his teaching and that is ashame because they could of learned so much from him. When we go back to Saddlebrook I would differently want Mike to instruct us! We wish we had him here in PA!!
LS
I learned so much at Saddlebrook Tennis Resort. Eleven women went on a tennis camp trip to this resort. Of the three tennis camp vacations I have been on, this one was the best. I was treated like an adult and given very good instruction. We didn’t do any silly games or jump over or around cones. We worked on strokes and improving our games.
DN
I had a fabulous 3 days and 15 hours if intense tennis. I was concerned that a 4:1 ratio would be too slow but – wow I was wrong. We hit a ton of balls, the drills were fast both in terms of ball feed but also court moment. Justin was a straight talker meaning you knew if your technique was off – even a bit off – but he was also an encourager – cheering for you to move faster and set the ready position quicker. I highly recommend Saddlebrook for anyone totally into tennis. BTW the pros are all totally into what they do – they arrive early to hit 1:1 with you, stay late and if there is an extra pro they say “who want to work on something 1:1 with me?” – this is the only Academy I have been to but its hard to envision a more challenging – yet accepting experience.
TM
I attended on October 16,2015. I had a fantastic workout and was able to work on my weak shots with Zora. There were only 2 in our group. We had feedback on nearly every shot! I was impressed as well as others to see Howard and Tai working with folks on the court. Zora was an excellent instructor and I had a great workout and came home with plenty to work on in my game. I highly recommend Saddlebrook for a great clinic!!
LR
I had a wonderful time in Saddlebrook with a great coach Matthew Broom. Courts are very good, in great shape, good balls in quantity and quality. He chose the people with the same level to practice with me. I would certainly come back as soon as I can to have another week there. Thanks guys!
TC
I wanted to work on my game intensively for a few days, and wondered whether it was worth it to travel to Saddlebrook from the Northeast in August. The answer is absolutely “yes” because Howard and Tai run a discliplined, demanding but friendly program with a laser focus on getting the tennis right. They are real pros. Justin did a great job in 3 days ironing out some chronic kinks in my forehand that previously resisted any coaching- very appreciative of that. And Lauren spent a terrific half hour putting my game thorugh the paces. Five hours a day in August can be a challenge (although you can skip any session and hang out at the resort, and the pros are very encouraging), but back home the improvement in my game is totally clear. No question in my mind I made the right choice. Thanks guys.
BB
This was the first tennis camp I’ve attended and I’m please I chose Saddlebrook Tennis. The adult tennis program is exactly as they described – intense and demanding. The coaches, Matt and Tai, were very helpful in fine tuning my strokes. I have already recommended Saddlebrook Tennis Camp to my friends. Can’t wait to come back and spend more that two days.
CL
Excellent tennis camp. Great instruction from the coaches. My game vastly improved over my 4 days in the Hopman program. The coaches were great at working with my strokes and fine-tuning them to perfection. I cannot wait for my next visit.
JP
I spent 5 days at the adult tennis camp and think it was truly a great tennis experience, exactly what I was hoping for!! The tennis staff was top notch, especially Tai Lam and Matt Broom. Howard Moore kicked the day off with great, easy to understand tennis instruction and the rest of the day was spent learning and drilling home the instructions needed to improve my game. The resort was very nice with a large pool and excellent restaurants. The hotel staff was helpful and accommodating. I would highly recommend Saddlebrook if you are looking for an excellent facility to improve your game. I look forward to returning sometime soon.
CM
I just returned from another visit from Saddlebrook and LOVED it even more. I had Justin as our instructor which made it very productive and enjoyable. Justin is one of the best instructors I have ever had there. Thank you Howard for taking good care of me and my daughter! We will be back!!
LM
Great Staff / Instruction / Program . Drills are awsome .

Nothing but great things to share about Howard, Zora and the amazing staff at Saddlebrook! I had to chance to return with a mate for our fourth visit. Having played at several other camps across the US, this continues to rate at the top for a few reasons. First – the staff do everything they can to make it an exceptional experience for you. They put thought into structuring the groups and if you aren’t happy they are more than happy to work with you. It is a drama-free environment and they handle requests and re-positioning with utmost professionalism. Second, the tennis instruction is second to none. Their instructors know how to read people and to push you and make you better. Each time I come out knowing the three things I need to focus on for the next year. And throughout what are indeed grueling 5 hours each day, we have a blast with the pros and fellow classmates. Lastly, the resort is really well run. Good food, great pool, great golfing (I hear) for those interested. Given the choice, I’m going back to Saddlebrook again. I just can’t say enough good things!
BS
Great tennis atmosphere. Lots of people who love the game in the camps

I had an amazing experience at the Saddlebrook tennis program. The student to pro ratio is fantastic and the instruction looked really good throughout all the courts. I want to give a shout out to my pro, Mike Harley, who gave my counterparts and I his best throughout the week. With temperatures in the high 90’s and high humidity, Mike kept his energy high throughout the 5 hour training days which in turn kept his students energy high. He was attentive to each of us throughout the day providing challenging drills and so much expert advice. He genuinely cared about improving our games. I look forward to putting this knowledge transfer to work come game time. I would definitely attend this program again and ask for Mike Harley. Thanks again Mike !!

I had decided to spend two weeks in a tennis camp with my wife and kids (7 and 8 years old) during our summer vacations. I live in SAmerica and wanted the campus to be in the US because I would like my kids to study there in the future and thought that it was a good way to increase their exposure to the culture. It was risky, we all like tennis but spending two weeks on a tennis camp with two kids playing tennis non stop for so long, bearing in mind that they are not used to this… but, here we go…After a bit of research it was easy to understand that it had to be in Florida (Recognized Tennis Meca in the US). It took me a bit longer to decide the place, I did a lot of research until I got to a short list of the top places (By the way this website was really helpful), I exchange many emails with them and spoke with each several times, I did not have a price restrictions, just wanted to mitigate the potential “kids fed up” risk and instead have a great family experience. I ended choosing Saddlebroke and could only say that it exceed my expectations. They were better than any other resort helping me to make the decision, the work done by Alice Zimmer supporting that process was way better than any other competitor. In the process I had several great conversations with Howard Moore, tennis director and outstanding guy (In other competitor I did not manage to get the guy on his position on the phone), that really got interested about the kids in order to mitigate that risk on my mind. And that very well explained in a transparent way, what was Saddlebroke good at not talking a single bad word about any competitors (Absolute English Gentleman). After spending two weeks there I could only say that the place really exceeded my expectations. The Tennis Pros that were assigned to the kids were just exceptional, only good words about Zora… Amazing skills to deal with a 7 years old girl and to keep her happily playing for 3h a day for two weeks, and what to say about Larry Robison, nicest person we meet these vacations that with his outstanding teaching technique and ability with kids has taken the game of my 8 years soon to a completely different level. My wife was also very happy when she was assigned Tai (Which planet is this guy from??? Great Asset for Saddlebroke) And I have the honor to be couched 5h a day for two weeks by Kevin Raley, an amazing 21 years old pro that is able the get the best out of you and take you to the next level with little words and having the ball rolling, never met someone that age so mature and with such a conscious knowledge of tennis. (This guy is to Saddlebroke what James Rodrigues is and more important will be to Real Madrid, if you like soccer you will understand). We went in a very quiet time of the year, the groups were smalls but they divided the people very well in levels. Howard Moore, Sean, Tai and Alice Zimmerman were very receptive to any comments and did always react quickly to resolve any issues. The resort has got a very nice nature with many animals, as well exceptional tennis and golf infra, accommodation, restaurants, SPA, pool…. And also an Academy oriented to facilitate the complex life of sport talented kids that need to combine studies with intense training and competition in either tennis or golf, up to a point were they have to decide to either go to college or to become pros. Our kids had English in the Academy after the tennis and we had a chance to visit the place with Ms. Nona Wagh( Ex professional tennis player and now an amazing education professional), and to get to speak to students there, parents of some of them, and also what I think is the biggest asset of this resort in terms of tennis, Alvaro Betancur (Ex-Profesional Player and Academy Head Coah and no question the Cristiano Ronaldo of the team in a humble version, probably Zidane makes more sense but he does not play any more), and were really pleased with what we saw and the feed back from all of them. It is also good that the resort has houses that could be rented long term, so the infrastructure is there in case the family would need to follow a future Rafa Nadal. In fact what I think is very good is that you have got all the infra inside the same resort, I do not know of any other place with the Academy inside. The infra in general was excellent and complete but if criticizing anything I guess that this will be the rooms of the hotel, they are correct but a bit old and I guess that an update is needed. It is something not that important to me after spending 5h a day of such a good tennis, but is good to go with the right expectations. Breakfast is very good and the resort has got only two restaurants but the region has got many alternatives. I was also very well impresed by the number of profesional players that passed through this resort an an early age, or to see John Isner or the american team really training there day after day. It is remarkable that they do not use that information to claim that they have created these players as other well known resorts do. In this context Saddlebroke could seem too humble or even stupid not to take more advantage of this, but what really demonstrate is respect because we all know that player becomes figure thanks that a combination of things. After been there I had the opportunity to play in other places in Florida with people from the US and Canada and was also very well impressed by the way they all spoke about Saddlebroke as a wish to go there one day. Same impresions with people from the US that I met there and that come back year after year and only talks good things about the place. I just can say that hopefully we will be back!

The Hopman Tennis Program at Saddlebrook is superb! I have had many wonderful experiences over decades in tennis, yet I was astounded at the thorough, accomplished, generous and hard-working professionals in this program. I received pitch-perfect, sophisticated instruction amidst great fun and camaraderie. I especially enjoyed the opportunity to improve my training and conditioning, for which this program is renown. I look forward to returning to Saddlebrook/Hopman many more times!

The tennis clinics are excellent. The pros could not be better. If you want to change instructors or the court no problem. Howard is always friendly, cordial and professional. He quickly makes you feel at home at Saddlebrook. My wife and I look forward to returning to Saddlebrook soon.

7th year in a row…guys trip to Saddlebrook! This is the highlight of our year. Tai was on vacation this week so we worked with a number of the pro’s. Miko was an outstanding pro who broke down our game in about 2-3 minutes and improved our ability by the end of the day. The entire staff welcome us back every year and we can’t wait to be back. 1 piece of advice…avoid eating too many Irish nachos 🙂

Just finished four days at Saddlebrook program and as always was a great experience. Worked with Zora 3 days and Justin one day. Both were wonderful and patient teachers and really helped me with my game. This is probably at least my 10th time to Saddlebrook and I can’t wait to return soon!

Rooms were spacious, grounds were beautiful, food was amazing. Tennis staff was awesome. Knowledgeable, helpful, and a lot of fun. I went on a girls trip for the first time, and we’re already planning our next trip

I recently returned from a girls trip to Saddlebrook with 5 tennis friends. The facility was nice. The resort employees were all very accommodating. All the tennis pros were awesome! There were 4 players to every pro and we stayed with that group the whole weekend. It is a great getaway for anyone interested in lots of tennis!
MR
Loved that there was always a court available to hit on. And we had our choice of hard or clay. The instruction was great and loved that they provided fruit and drinks for us during drills.

The resort and tennis programs were “1st Class”! The accomodations were great. Entertainment by the pool during the day was great. The tennis facility and program offered was stellar, very accomdating to our group of six. The individual instructions were very knowlegable and made it a lot of fun. We did wish for more nightlife entertainment in the evening, like band instead of just a DJ. The DJ was great in his own right.

I came to Saddlebrook with 5 girlfriends to enjoy a weekend without children and play tennis. We enrolled in the Hopman tennis instruction for 3 hours a day of lessons/drills. It was awesome. The instructor to student ratio was 1:4 and the instructors were knowledgeable and fun. We played a ton of tennis, learned new tips and skills, enjoyed the food, drinks and atmosphere. We look forward to making this a yearly trip for our tennis team.

Myself and 5 of my team mates came out for the Hopman tennis program. Instructor/student ratio was 4:1 Our instructors were extremely knowledgeable and personable. Shawn McGee, the Adult tennis Director was always available on the courts. He truly had an interest in the players attending the Hopman program. The atmosphere around the tennis center is fun and geared towards any level of tennis.
We want to see your racquet sports vacations! When you’re documenting your trip, tag @TennisResortsOnline on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn and use #TROAdventures for a chance to be featured on our page.

Excellent teaching; great pros; Will definitively go back.
Instructor Zora Vlckova made my experience at Saddlebrook extraordinary. This deadly lefty was patient, thorough, and enthusiastic as she worked on my strokes. We did drills, had a lot of laughs, and learned a great deal on the courts during the three days I was there. I can’t wait to return for more learning and fun.
first let me say i’ve only been playing tennis ten years and started late in life, but I love it. now that i’ve retired i try to play daily. i’ve always enjoyed my lessons and clinics and i’m constantly trying new venues. in the top 50 i’ve tried six.
This is as hard core a tennis program as you desire. They will put you thru it or let you “vacation” thru…your choice. Eager to please. Justin was fun.
Saddlebrook is one of the finest vacation experiences we have had. World-class tennis instruction for both adults and juniors, both experienced and beginners. Staff are so friendly and accommodating.
Excellent instruction!! Great time, tons of exercise, we will be back 🙂
We had a great 4 days hete.
Had a wonderful experience both on the tennis court and at the resort. Had an opportunity to work with Zora Vlckova and found her to be an outstanding tennis professional. I definitely feel that my game has improved as a result of her advice and instruction and my experience at Saddlebrook.
Excellent facility with great coaching. Specifically, a young female instructor Zora was outstanding. She was knowledgeable, patient, very pleasant, provide excellent coaching and significantly improved my game. I would highly recommend her as an instructor and will ask for her in the future.
I had a wonderful time in Saddlebrook with a great coach Matthew Broom. Courts are very good, in great shape, good balls in quantity and quality. He chose the people with the same level to practice with me. I would certainly come back as soon as I can to have another week there. Thanks guys!
Excellent tennis camp. Great instruction from the coaches. My game vastly improved over my 4 days in the Hopman program. The coaches were great at working with my strokes and fine-tuning them to perfection. I cannot wait for my next visit.
I just returned from another visit from Saddlebrook and LOVED it even more. I had Justin as our instructor which made it very productive and enjoyable. Justin is one of the best instructors I have ever had there. Thank you Howard for taking good care of me and my daughter! We will be back!!
