Saddlebrook Resort has a well-deserved reputation for staging one of the most—if not, the most—demanding tennis programs on the planet. The underlying philosophy owes much to the training techniques of the legendary Australian Davis Cup coach and notorious taskmaster Harry Hopman. His was a taxing regimen designed at once to improve technique and push the envelope of his charge’s stamina and endurance. That reputation for toughness draws aspiring juniors to its academy and committed adults, the latter attracted to the blend of rigorous workouts and Saddlebrook’s full resort amenities.
Saddlebrook Resort garnered awards for its design when it opened in 1981. The 480-acre layout, 25 miles north of Tampa, places the lodging, restaurants, shops, a lakesize swimming pool, tennis courts, spa, golf clubhouse, and meeting rooms at the center of a halo of golf fairways, condos, and residential neighborhoods. Centralizing all of the major amenities creates what they call a “Walking Village.” Foliage is lush, ponds and lakes dot the property, and birds are abundant, including several endangered species for which this is a refuge and a rookery.
This is hardly the setting you’d expect for the mother of all hard-core tennis camps, but having all those amenities provides relief from the rigors of the daily regimen while its guard gate provides privacy and security—one reason touring pros visit between tournaments to work on their games. Its juniors, both live-in and short term, hope the program will set them on the road to greatness (or at least a college scholarship), while adults come looking to get in shape, test their physical mettle, or perhaps search for a magic elixir to cure, once and for all, the flaws in their game. It is also often true that the adults frequently underestimate the physical demands a program like this makes, and that even though none has ever in his or her life played five hours of tennis a day, they somehow think they are ready for five hours a day of drills.
Although the historical philosophy of the program has to push you to the point that your game breaks down, find what is salvageable in the rubble, and rebuild from there. That said, after my last visit I came away thinking that this approach has mellowed somewhat in recent years. In my early participation in the Hopman program, as it was known then, I remember being chastised for ignoring a feed too wide for me to reach, only to have the next fed wider until I learned that it was crucial to make an attempt even when you thought you had no chance of reaching the balls. I remember, too, the so-called “bucket of ball” drills and “kamikaze” drills that had you scampering right and left and back again until you pleaded exhaustion or the pro was convinced you’d had enough.
My sense is that while the regimen remains demanding, the boot-camp approach has been abandoned. None of the pros on my latest visit adopted an in-your-face drill sergeant’s demeanor (though I was told that if that’s what you want, it is available). Instead, they established key concepts essential to hitting well—early preparation, eyes on the ball, full follow-through—and then ran drills and competitive exercises to put those concepts into practice. Still, there were times when we were grateful for the break afforded by the need to pick up balls.
Although there are exceptions, you typically stay with the same pro throughout your stay (barring his or her days off), so they oversee your progress first-hand. They tailor the work to the abilities of the campers they oversee. Rather than stand in one place and hit picture-perfect strokes, you pretty much have to run for every ball. Like the pros, you’ll do a lot of two-on-one drills, and if your skills permit it live-ball drills and competitive games with the other campers on your court. The process can be exhilarating, demoralizing, or both, but you will come away from this program knowing where you stand with respect to your aerobic conditioning and what you really need to do to take your game to the next level.
If courts alone were the measure of a great tennis resort, then Saddlebrook would rank near the top. It has 45 courts altogether, including hard, clay, red clay, Rebound Ace (the surface formerly used at the Australian Open) and grass, all of which—the grass included—are available to guests. The major complex is near the center of the resort. There is a secondary complex a mile away in Lakeside Village, which is also the site of the 3,000-square-foot fitness center and high-performance complex and where the juniors enrolled in the academy work out. All of the courts are laid out in clusters of two to five separated by an awning-covered patio furnished with chairs and a refrigerated water fountain.
Tennis Staff: Although Harry Hopman, the legendary Australian Davis Cup coach, died in 1985, the organization he built survives. The core group of staff, many longtime Saddlebrook pros, expands and contracts based on how many adults are enrolled in the programs—as many as are needed to keep the student:pro ratio at 4:1 of less.
Tennis Programs: Although the resort itself offers some perfunctory stroke-of-the-day clinics (run by tennis-academy staff), the real reason a tennis player would come here is the Hopman-inspired camps.
Unlike some other dedicated facilities and college-campus programs, Hopman’s does not include any meals in the package, so for other dining you’re left to fend for yourself at the quite good but pricey restaurants at the resort itself or pile into cars for trips beyond the resort. Caveat: The Saddlebrook program can be among the most physically demanding of all the camps, so start a workout regimen weeks before you come down. Bring two pairs of tennis shoes, several changes of clothes (washers and dryers are available in each lodging cluster), a hat, sunblock, two racquets if you have them (broken strings are commonplace), and overgrip.
Off Court
Golf Courses: Saddlebrook has two 18-hole courses, both designed by Arnold Palmer, and an Arnold Palmer Golf Academy. Tee times for any of the following courses can be reserved.
Palmer Course: This course is characterized by open, undulating fairways, and an abundance of lakes, streams and ponds. Par: 71. Length: 5,212-6,469 yards.
Saddlebrook Course: Though flatter than the Palmer course, this one is also tighter, with tree-lined fairways and water on most of its holes. Par: 70. Length: 5,183-6,603 yards.
Spa & Fitness Center: The 7,000-square-foot Spa in the walking village has 12 treatment rooms offering massages, hydrotherapy treatments, and some beauty services; however, it is currently closed. Campers who can still walk at the end of the day are welcome to use the 3,300-square-foot, state-of-the-art fitness center in Lakeside Village, a 10-minute walk from the Superpool, but it’s rate that anyone does so. It has a full line of Cybex equipment plus treadmills, stair steppers, recumbent bicycles, elliptical trainers, and rubber-encased freeweights all in rooms with views of a swimming pool or volley ball pit. Personal trainers are on hand to help you craft a workout regimen. There is also an adjacent high-performance sports center, which offers specialized training programs often to professional athletes.
The centerpiece of the resort is its half-million-gallon, amoeba-shaped Superpool, said to be the largest in Florida. At 270 feet long, it is vast enough to contain a 25-meter lap pool, water volleyball and water basketball courts, and a diving area. Around it are children’s wading pools and two heated whirlpools. There is another swimming pool near the Sports Village & Fitness Center. Otherwise, recreation run to bike trails around the property and bass fishing in the privately stocked lakes.
Children's programs: The S’Kids Club operates year round providing supervised activities for kids ages 4-12.
Dining: The TD’s Sports Bar has light fare and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Dempsey’s Steakhouse is currently closed; however it’s menu prime beef and seafood is available at TD’s Sports Bar. There’s also a pool bar for lunch and poolside cocktails.
Accommodations
There are a total of 790 rooms and suites at Saddlebrook, most of them in 50-unit clusters variously arrayed near the main clubhouse and pool, or out along the golf fairways. Each cluster has an ice machine and washer/dryer. The most basic accommodation is a hotel room with two double beds and a private balcony or patio. The alternatives are one- and two-bedroom suites (which anywhere else would be called condos). These have full kitchens (with coffee makers and dishwashers; most have microwaves, if not you can request one), separate living and dining areas, and one or two bedrooms, each with a full bath. The living room opens onto a patio or balcony. High-speed Internet access is available throughout the resort.
Anyone who enrolls in the Saddlebrook International Tennis program is eligible for discounted room rates. By booking tennis and lodging together, you get a deluxe guest room, 5 hours/day of intensive tennis, complimentary court time, daily lunch, and access to the fitness center and spa. One- and two-bedroom suites with full kitchens are also available.
Getting there
Seasons: The resort and its Hopman tennis programs operate year-round; however, given the grueling nature of these clinics, you should think twice about coming in summer—unless, of course, you want to work out in hot, humid conditions. Principally for that reason, the camps are generally two to three times larger during the fall, winter, and spring than in summer.
My husband and I visited Saddlebrook during FedCup. It was my 3rd visit and his first. We were warmly greeted by the Hopman staff. They remembered me from previous visits and I was able to work Larry again, who greatly improved my game the previous visit. This resort is so friendly and welcoming…I felt like I was coming back to see old friends. After extensively researching similar programs, you cannot find this quality of instruction for the $$$. My husband, who has been playing tennis for over 30 years, said the private lesson we did with Larry was the best he had ever experienced. We will definitely be back

Saddlebrook is fantastic! We went there in April with our 13 and 17 year old children and enrolled them in the tennis program. The instruction and attention were first rate. The instructors are very attentive and personable. Howard in particular was wonderful – excellent instruction and easy going. The setting is very easy to navigate with the pool, restaurants, etc. centrally located. Our room was clean and comfortable. We plan to return in October for the adult program. If you’re looking for a beautiful resort with excellent tennis instruction, you found your place.

My son Arya, recently turned 13, attended a week-long tennis camp at Saddlebrook. He plays in a high-performance academy in NJ and trains 6 days a week averaging 15 hours a week of tennis. For his spring break, we decided to go to Saddlebrook and change his routine. We arrived Sunday afternoon and checked in to our room. Tennis lessons start Monday morning at 8 Am. He played with other campers from 8 am until 11 am. After the morning session, the coaches decided he should play with the academy kids. In the afternoon session, from 1 pm to 5 pm, he played with the academy kids. He had an amazing time. From Tuesday, my son started lessons at 9 am instead of 8 am because that is when academy kids arrive. Most of the morning sessions were private or semi-private and the afternoon sessions were typically 2 to 3 kids to a court. Arya loved the afternoon sessions with the academy kids. He made some really good friends. Throughout the week, he played with a variety of coaches and every one of them are excellent. Every coach is a little different, but Arya responded well to all of them. I met other families from the northeast who brought their kids for training and they loved the place as much as I did. The resort itself is beautiful. The buildings are a little older, but well maintained. The tennis facility is truly wonderful. We had an amazing week and we are already planning our next trip back.

Hey tennisresortsonline.com… why is Saddlebrook only ranked #20 on your list? Cuz when it comes to tennis… Came here with my wife and high school daughter, who is on her tennis team (and I’m old but played on my high school team). We all participated in the 5 hour camp for three days. The resort was buzzing with activity since Saddlebrook is hosting the FedCup (USA vs. Czech Republic). The pros here are really communicative. They do many of the same drills that we’re all used to doing at our home club (plus some new ones that I intend to use again in practice), but the staff here really do a great job in talking about the strengths and weaknesses of each person’s game. Special kudos to the “Tennis Whisperer,” Coach Shawn McGee. He’s really a special talent when it comes to teaching the game of tennis. He had my daughter change her stroke in subtle ways that really amped up the pace of her hits on both the forehand and backhand side. Our whole family has come away with a few new weapons to try out back home. Thanks, Saddlebrook!

Saddlebrook is a wonderful place to go for some intensive tennis clinics. Pros are all knowledgeable and they offer all types of surfaces.
MR
I went for a week of tennis– I was not sure my body was up to the task. It is a week of physical workouts . The instruction was very good, they came up with creative drills, and worked on items you wanted to address. They definitely put you in groups within your own level. You tend to establish a repore with the people in the group. Great time, courts were well kept and the instruction was excellent . Give it a try — you will like it
AT
As a beginner, I was assigned to Larry for my five full day tennis “vacation”. Larry could not have been a better instructor for someone like me. Although it was a little intense, I learned a lot and still enjoyed the process. Pros: breaks down all the types of swings. Cons: need more drills.

Saddlebrook is my “happy place”. My husband gave me a trip to Saddlebrook as a birthday gift over a decade ago and I have been hooked ever since. Now I go with friends, by myself, with him, anytime I can –and each time it’s an excellent experience that improves my game and takes away all stress. Here’s the checklist; you can’t get this anywhere else: 1) Five hours of tennis clinics available each day; 2) 4:1 max student to instructor ratio; 3) Outstanding instructors; 4) Outstanding leadership — Program Director Howard Moore designs and oversees things to ensure that each person’s experience is optimal; 5) Video-taping and personalized feedback; 6) Great climate year-round –always outdoors; 7) Comfortable environment –everyone is friendly (tennis staff, resort staff, fellow guests). All you have to do is show up and everything is taken care of for you. Tennis clinic from 8-11. Break from 11-1 (for me, this is time for lunch by the pool, watching pros practice, checking out the pro shop). Tennis clinic from 1-3. Then there is time for drinks by the pool or a spa treatment or checking out the wildlife (the birds are amazing). All meals are available on property. It’s close to the Tampa airport. You can choose a hotel room or suite (with kitchen). But back to the tennis… Saddlebrook is also a place where pros have been created and developed and come back to practice. When I was there a few weeks ago, during my lunch break, I watched Sam Stosur and John Isner working on their games! It’s great having the opportunity to work with different instructors. Each has his/her own way of expressing how to execute a stroke or doubles or singles strategy. I have learned new terms from Phil, like “Shankapotomus” (not good), been given great lessons, tips, and feedback from Howard, Sean, Vlad and Zora, and even got advice on upgrading my racquet –which I did and I’m very happy about. Saddlebrook is the only place I’d ever take a tennis vacation. When you experience the best you just can’t compromise or stop going back!
CS
We found the camp to be physically intense but not overwhelming with good breaks and many camp-provided amenities and refreshments. The quality of the instruction was superb with direct instructor feedback after almost every stroke. The variety of drills and point play kept things fresh and interesting. Great value for a 5 hour per day adult camp with a 3:1 student-teacher ratio. The resort was fantastic. Great food, great service, great amenities. We enjoyed time in almost all of their restaurants (fine and casual dining) as well as the spa and pools. We would definitely return.
LM
Saddle brook Tennis program improved my game. The clinics are proper size and the instructors have the skills to quickly assess your game and individualize teaching. My two private lessons with Larry also helped my game. He has many years of experience that allows him to hone in on your weaknesses and make rapid corrections. Larry showed me patterns to win my singles matches and he is keen on the psychological aspect of winning. Thank you to Larry and the saddle brook tennis center.

I coach tennis at a school in the Boston area and brought my team down for 5 days of preseason training. This was all of our first time at Saddlebrook. While the kids played at the junior camp, I participated in adult clinics. We were all impressed with the coaching staff, the facilities, and the services available. The team felt that they got a solid workout each day and appreciated the low athlete to pro ratio and being able to hit with a lot of different kids of all ages and experience levels. They especially enjoyed the drills designed to improve the mental side of their game. At the end of each day, they were exhausted but pleased that the resort offered buses to Walmart and the mall so they could pick up snacks and go out for frozen yogurt. As an adult, I felt comfortably challenged by the clinics. I mostly worked with DJ and Larry who were excellent pros who helped me break down each part of my game and improve piece by piece. They introduced a ton of different drills and did an outstanding job of simplifying and scaffolding each stroke and explaining a variety of match scenarios. Overall, it was a win-win: the kids had a great experience and I got to improve my game while chaperoning.

I cannot believe how FANTASTIC this Tennis Resort is… Larry and Howard are the FINEST instructors EVER!! They recognized my (errors) and fine tuned a way to repair them… I learned more in my time here than my 5 years of playing!!! We will be back!
KS
This was my first experience at a tennis camp. I absolutely loved it!!! The booking process is very easy and is all handled through Hopman. Sandra was so responsive to our questions and needs. The instructors are all really nice and professional. They really take the time to get to know the players and adapt a plan for their stay. The directors (Howard and Sean) were very involved and definitely made sure all players were happy. The level of instruction was really strong and again, adapted to the players they were teaching. I can’t wait to go back!

I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation for the excellent service of the Hopman tennis center team this week. The office and pro shot were so accommodating, helpful and pleasant as I added extra sessions and lessons for myself and my 6 year old twins. The coaching team was fantastic. Especially coaches Carol and Jeffrey who took amazing care of my 6 year very active twins. The twins have never really been in formal tennis lesson before and Carol and Jeffrey brought out the very best in them. And the kids both had so much fun in the first day afternoon sessions that they asked to do morning and afternoon. After that, they even wanted more, so we added private lessons to a few days, which meant that for several days they were in 6 hours of instruction and still wanted to play more after that. A very good reflection on the coaching! Also I’d like to acknowledge Larry. He was outstanding. He managed a very diverse group (me being the weakest link:) ) one afternoon, with skill, humor and expertise. He also was an excellent teacher for my friend and I ?when we did a semi private lesson with him on another day. We learned more in that hour than we thought possible. He was terrific in every aspect. Such a depth of knowledge. Great pedagogy approach and a lot of passion and genuine interest in making us improve our skills. We are grateful that the team at Saddlebrook make tennis accessible and interesting. My family will definitely be back again as often as we can.

We had so much fun! Howard, the director, went above and beyond for us. He was friendly to everyone (all the groups). Inviting everyone to the bar afterwards to socialize. How nice is that? Like one big family. Especially loved Sean as our pro. Loved how Howard jumped in on all the courts. Very useful tips.

Had a great 5 day 2 sessions/day experience at Saddlebrook a few weeks ago. I was fortunate to have an excellent pro, Zora, for all 5 days. A friend of mine joined me for 6 of the sessions. The staff made sure we had well matched players on the court with us(we are 4.5 level). I understand that Saddlebrook is emphasizing keeping everyone’s group equal in tennis ability. Pluses: All the pros are accomplished players and have great backgrounds. Zora is outstanding, but I saw great teaching down the line. You will hit more tennis balls at Saddlebrook than any other place I know(I’ve been to several others) The pros are very willing to spend extra time working on a weakness. The more work you are willing to put in, I guarantee, the more improvement you will see. You may think that’s true everywhere, but at Saddlebrook, they will show you innovative ways to break down your old habits. Zora played many points with us and participated in some of the drills as needed. That kept the tennis lively and competitive. Negatives: The resort itself is nice and the rooms are good, but no Wow factor. Restaurants and exercise facility are also all good. There is a full service Spa which is supposed to be very good, but I’ve never been in it(I’m a guy). It’s easy to fly into Tampa. Wesley Chapel is 40 minutes away and there isn’t much around. Going into Tampa for nightlife is too big of a deal in my opinion, though others do it.
JH
I’ve been going to Saddlebrook for the past 25 years with friends and family. Howard Moore and his staff do a great job of ensuring an intense, fun experience for players of all levels. There are never more than 4 players per court, so the action is non-stop. My pro this year was Zora, who pushed me just hard enough and gave sound feedback on my stroke technique. She really understood my game and gave me tips I could use right away. I know of no better way to work on my game and prepare for the summer tennis season than a long weekend at Saddlebrook.
BK
I want to tell all who are looking for a tennis camp to highly consider Hopson at Saddlebrook. I am a 74 yr. old former club payer who went to this camp to sharpen my club game in ATL who benefited greatly from the coaching/instruction from Coach Larry. I have been to 7 camps in my career and he was the BEST coach above all. The difference was he taught strategy in addition to stokes, etc. His teaching method is awesome—-take advantage !!
CG
At Saddlebrook visiting friends in the community and took a morning 3 hour camp with a friend taught by AJ. We really liked AJ–he fed us millions of balls and offered good pointers and instruction. The Saddlebrook facility itself was a bit sleepy and looked a little run down; it could use some cosmetic upgrades. The head of the Hopman tennis facility was very charming and friendly and gave us Saddlebrook shirts and totes. I would definitely visit again.
MF
The atmosphere at Saddlebrook is the perfect combination of intense tennis, a friendly and supportive staff pushing you to improve, and a swim in the pool or visit to the hot tub. Zora was my pro and she was awesome, both instructive and supportive. You are placed on a court with others of the same skill level. You will push yourself and hit more balls than you ever dreamed you could. But you will improve and have a great time along the way. Howard does an excellent job overseeing the staff and participants. Phil and Larry are also big favorites of our family!

I just returned from attending 3 days at the Hopman 5 Hour Adult clinic at Saddlebrook. It was a great 3 days and a wonderful break from the winter weather in Canada. The sessions were 3 hours in the morning and another 2 hours in the afternoon, with 2 hours in between for lunch. The instructors made sure that everyone stayed hydrated and pushed the pace enough to challenge everyone within their limits. The 5 hours flew by. We covered the basic strokes and had enough time to run drills and reinforce what we learned. During the 3 days I worked with Zora, Phil, Tai and Vlad. They were all excellent and kept things fun. My wife did not join me on this trip because the review of the tennis program gave the impression that it was a “bootcamp” along the lines of the navy seal training. I didn’t need to worry and it would have been fine if my wife had joined me. The instructors adjust the intensity to the ability of each group. It was a great trip, I’ll attend again.
HC
Amazing tennis program. I feel stronger and more competent in just three days. The pros are knowledgable and seem to really want to help people. I saw my peers improve dramatically right in front of my eyes. The resorts grounds are well kept and the staff is very personable; the pool bartender called my by name all week. The rooms themselves, though clean, are outdated. I would like to see them remodeled, especially for the cost.
JD
I came to improve my technique. The instructors are patient, attentive and very friendly. The instructors watch, suggest adjustments and through repetition coach you through how to achieve consistency on the finer points of technique. If you stay for several days you will have an opportunity to receive insight and instructions for a variety of people. Their main goal is to make you a better player at your level by explaining how the flaw in your technique adversely impacts you game. I take a one hour lesson a week. In five days, I have had the equivalent of six months of lessons, but with significantly more repetition, producing a real improvement both results and confidence. I will continue with my weekly lesson, but i will come back here again.
JS
I spend a week at the resort back in March 2016 with my then 14 year old son and my wife. My son was signed up for the junior camp for the full week. Unfortunately he caught a stomach bug and couldn’t fulfill the full program. On top of that he was placed with a school group where he didn’t really fit in. We brought our concern to the attention of the Tennis director Howard Moore and were very impressed with the attention and solutions offered to us. We were allowed full credit at a future trip all we had to do was call. This past week I went back with my son and we had personal training by Howard Moore and his head coach which was very useful. Impressed with the follow up and the level and quality of the instructions is impeccable. We will definitely go back.

I’m a 3.5 USTA player and this was my third time to Saddlebrook. They’ve changed the program since I was last there to be less focused on footwork and feeding drills to incorporate more live ball play. I was hoping to get mor tips to improve the strategy in my play. I even wrote them ahead of time to tell them my goals. The first day, they had me in a group with someone who was a beginner and couldn’t do short court rallies. I asked to be moved after 15 minutes, which they did. The next day, they put the same person in my group again when more people joined the classes. I complained again and they moved me. Unfortunately, I was with a different pro each day with different ones giving you different feedback and that always makes me mental, which I warned them about before I arrived. Phil was the best instructor and I wish I had him throughout. I think he would have given more strategy that would have been useful for me. I’ve been to many adult tennis camps. I don’t think I’d go to Saddlebrook again. The best part about it is the intensity of the program. You can play all day if you want. Most camps don’t have at least five hours a day of instruction. But they are limited by which players sign up for the clinics and you might end up in a group with people who don’t have your skills. For the money and strategy you get, Newcombe’s ranch and Wintergreen are much better values.
SE
The tennis workouts are exceptional. The teaching pros are always positive and help you improve your strokes and fitness at the same time making it fun. I will definitely return. The golf courses are beautiful.
CR
Strengths Tennis staff and specifically leadership. Howard Moore was enthusiastic, helpful, knowledgeable and very professional Courts were in good condition Lessons were helpful Weaknesses Pricey accommodations on property. Some staff unfriendly
RP
Saddlebrook Tennis is the best tennis resort in the world. The highly motivated Howard Moore helps lift your tennis game and your spirits with his enthusiasm and knowledge of the game. The pros that run the drills are the best I have ever worked with. I have been to several tennis resorts in Florida and this is by far the best, which is why I continue to come back here.

I just came back from a 5-day intensive adult athlete training bootcamp at Saddlebrook. This was my second time in two years. The great majority of participants were very good players in their mid-30s to mid-50s with above average physical condition. I’ve spent all week with Edward, a young pro with a modern ATP style. He rapidly zoomed-in on my handicap and made me practice all week with creative and demanding drills. He didn’t give up on correcting my shortfalls so that at the end of each day I really felt like progressing. Although we were working hard, we also had a lot of fun. The atmosphere in our group was awesome. I love Saddlebrook for that and for many other things such as a very friendly and customer-focused staff, a superb facility with a giant pool, large rooms with kitchenettes, family-friendly location (my son was enrolled in the junior tennis program while I was doing the senior one) and above all, great tennis for a serious adult athletes like me!
SG
The tennis instruction was top notch. After working with Larry for three hours on Day 1, I felt noticeable improvement in every aspect of my game. He has a wonderful personality and manner for teaching while knowing just what to say to achieve improvement and results.

In mid-December, we had a great 2 1/2 days at Saddlebrook. First, the tennis instruction was first-class, carefully tailored to each player’s experience level. Within the first 30 minutes, the set of coaches evaluated each player and not only paired players by ability level, but already focused with each indivdual on specific areas to address. I was lucky and ended up with 5 hours coaching one of the days one on one with coach Vlad. The other days, my wife and I were paired with other players and worked with coach Larry. Lot’s of fun competitive play along with the coaching. And the video analyses by coach Tai was quite instructive. The har-tru courts were in great shape, and we also had a chance to play on red clay (the grass courts were too wet to be playable). And the resort itself and the accomodations were excellent. The Dempsey Steak House dinner onsite was superb, with the sea bass the best I have ever eaten anywhere (despite it being a steak house). Basically, can’t beat Saddlebrook for a bucket list experience. And one of the fellow players has been back for 27 straight years !!
AR
Outstanding tennis learning experience. 3 hours in the morning and two in the afternoon. Mostly excellent pros and if you get one that does not mesh Howard the director will tweak your program until you get paired up with the correct pro. Players from 2.5 up to high level programs, and from age 18-75 are there in the adult programs. I have been there 5 times. Sometimes they video serve or shots, sometime you can play on the red clay or grass, but always you will learn. Tennis program great. Golf instruction also good. Rooms are dated a bit and internet comes and goes. Great breakfast. Try to get a package with breakfast and parking included.

Just returned from two days of drills and playing and can say without question I left hitting the ball better and understanding some fundamentals better. Our instructor Zora was great and quickly diagnosed some problems with my forehand and by the end I was hitting well. STRENGTHS: Great instructors, great student-instructor ratio, high quality facility WEAKNESS: Need more match simulation play

I recently went through the Hopman program at Saddlebrook. I’m a 4.0-4.5 player, and this was my first time going through an onsite camp as an adult. The tennis staff at Saddlebrook are fantastic. Howard is a real gentleman with an infectious attitude about tennis. My wife actually surprised me with this trip. But I learned afterwards she had multiple conversations with Howard directly where he provided everything she needed to plan this trip. When I arrived, he personally asked if there was anything he could do to make my stay better. I requested to train on the red clay in addition to the green surface, and he immediately obliged. Howard performs the morning demonstrations as well, and the passion and insight that goes into his instruction really keep everyone’s attention. Roberto was one of the pros that I worked with. A real student of the game and competitor. A great pro to work with if you’re focused on tactics in particular. After the first day with him I realized I’d been hitting backhand volleys wrong my whole life. And with a couple of simple changes, that shot is now 10 times better. He’s also not afraid to keep you working – which was fine with me. Tai was another pro that I worked with. This guy is a fantastic communicator – a great tennis coach. Right away you can tell he is a really good player. But when he offers feedback – he finds ways to get things to sink in. Before you know it you’re hitting 100% better with a few small changes. He also has a great attitude and comes across as a real leader. Getting a chance to work with Tai was a GREAT opportunity. The tennis facilities were outstanding. Well maintained courts in a great setting. Lunch at Inspirations restaurant was also very good. Really hot, fresh food and good specials. The spa was also very nice – and I had a sports massage which was much needed after so much tennis. There aren’t many weaknesses that come to mind. I guess the rooms are a little bit dated. But still clean and comfortable. I wasn’t there to spend a bunch of time in my room anyway, so that wasn’t a huge deal. If you want to go work on your game with some serious tennis people, Saddlebrook is a great choice. Thank you, Howard and team for making my experience so memorable.

I’ve been to Saddlebrook more than once, I think it speaks volumes when the majority of fellow tennis players are return clients. The knowledge level, courtesy and professionalism is second to none compared to other tennis resorts. Howard Moore (Program Director) is an absolute joy to be around. The staff (Zora/Phil the ones I mostly interacted with this visit) of tennis pros are friendly, infectious and upbeat. The groups are small enough to keep the drill personal. The entire staff at Saddlebrook (front office/housing) made my visit a complete joy. It is no wonder when I go somewhere else I always return to Saddlebrook.

Three of my best friends and I attended a 3-day camp in October 2016. Our Tennis pro we were assigned kept us moving – we worked on every aspect of our game. He also allowed us to provide feedback about what we wanted to do more of both as a group and individually – so, it was tailored to our needs, yet still demanding and fun. We all came away knowing more about the game and improved players – a huge success. I also want to point out that the Program Director, Howard Moore, was top-notch and runs a very tight ship. All four of us were impressed to his hands-on approach and focus on making sure every attendee received the best experience possible. He also invited each of us to a personal coaching session with him – something I will never forget! He is a true professional and wonderful ambassador for the sport of Tennis. In summary, our trip to Saddlebrook was very worthwhile not only for the tennis, but also for the very spacious and comfortable resort.

These guys do a terrific job of putting it all together. There was a large group so we could be matched with players of similar ability. They were able to accommodate my college age daughter as a beginner for a couple days without difficulty. They really took care. Our group had Zora and she could immediately see what each of us needed to improve. She consistently pushed us for the necessary changes. Not too much, not too little. She is a great instructor.
KM
The tennis was great! We were there for 3 days in mid Sept, Zora Vlckova was our pro. She did a great job keeping us motivated in the Florida heat and gave us a ton of tips that I’ve been able to use at home. I would highly recommend her!
JP
Our instructor was Edward. He was fantastic. made us work very hard but fair. worked with each person on their area of need and would not leave the stroke until the person made progress the best session I have ever had will ask for Edward again when I visit again
WW
The tennis was phenomenal. Zora was our pro and she was extremely knowledgable and enthusiastic about tennis. The food was 5-star in my opinion. I had a steak that was one of the best I have ever had. The lodging was acceptable. It was clean (which is critical) but a little bit dated and in need of a re-fresh. It would have been nice to have WiFi in the rooms and some access to recent movies in the rooms. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. As far as a tennis experience, it was top notch. I would like to return with my tennis buddies.

My experience at Saddlebrook was great! I would recommend the tennis program to anyone who would like to improve their tennis game but is willing to work hard. The instructors make the whole experience worthwhile. I was most impressed with Zora, Vlad, and Phillip. They were able to teach technique that was tailored to improve your game. They are fantastic tennis instructors! I plan on returning next year.

Had a great time overall, but the resort is getting outdated and it is expensive. The whole experience needs a bit of polishing. Had fun, but we left thinking there must be something better.

The tennis program at Saddlebrook is fabulous. My wife and I have returned 3 times in the last 2 years and will without a doubt be going back again. All of the teaching pro’s do an excellent job but one in particular stands out with exception. Zora, a former WTA player and collegiate standout, brings us back time and time again. Her attention to technique and all around play makes every drill session with her a pleasure, while being very productive. Regardless of your level of play, 3.0, 5.0 or anywhere in between, I assure you Zora will give you several coaching tips to improve your game. She exhibits a great personality and hard work ethic in everything done on the court. Hats off to Saddlebrook Tennis and our sincere thanks to Zora in particular for everything you have done. Keep up the great work!!

I highly recommend the tennis program at Saddlebrook. I received more attention and instructor then I thought I would receive. the instructors know each person individually and work to improve and I had so much fun too. I highly recommend Tia Liam & Vlad. It was my first visit and so look forward to going back. It is great for all ages.

I really enjoyed my time at Saddlebrook and I really improved my game. All of the staff were very friendly, knowledgeable, and did a terrific job of pointing out things I could improve on. I also appreciated that they asked me what I thought I needed to work. They also did a great job of making sure all of the tennis is fun at the same time. I would definitely go back in the future.
JS
The tennis is challenging and very hard but well worth it! The instructors were great-especially Larry and Tai Lam. Howard, the program director was very accommodating to our needs and tailored the programs for us and our daughter. Spa was excellent.I had a great massage. We would highly recommend Saddlebrook and hope to go back soon.

I had a great time at Saddlebrook! Justin was my instructor for my 3 day visit and he did an excellent job. Brought a lot of energy! Very helpful tips and individual teaching!

The Hopman Program at Saddlebrook was an exceptional experience. Having a group of 4 players to 1 instructor allows for maximum attention to individual instruction, and plenty of repetition. I appreciated the focus for the entire group on a specific play strategy each morning session. Certainly 2 sessions per day allows the tennis enthusiast everything they could want. Thanks to Howard and Shawn for their overseeing the program. Special thanks to Zora for working with our group. She was outstanding.

I spent 4 days at Saddlebrook this year – and they did a great job of working me very hard. This is not a clinic for those not really wishing to push themselves as it is 3 hours in the morning and 2 in the afternoon – I loved it. Zora was very organised, well structured in her group coaching – her teaching points were excellent and her communication very good. I also took a private lesson with her – and she I can honestly say transformed an adequate backhand into a weapon – her patience, consistency of teaching point and communication was excellent. Saddlebrook is exceptional for those really wishing to push themselves – it was so much fun – and nothing is ever too much for Howard and his team. My nephew was there too and he loved the children’s programme. They go out of their way to cope with individual needs. Simply the BEST !

Give it a try — you will like it
As a beginner, I was assigned to Larry for my five full day tennis “vacation”.
The tennis workouts are exceptional. The teaching pros are always positive and help you improve your strokes and fitness at the same time making it fun. I will definitely return. The golf courses are beautiful.
Strengths Tennis staff and specifically leadership. Howard Moore was enthusiastic, helpful, knowledgeable and very professional Courts were in good condition Lessons were helpful Weaknesses Pricey accommodations on property. Some staff unfriendly

The tennis was great! We were there for 3 days in mid Sept, Zora Vlckova was our pro. She did a great job keeping us motivated in the Florida heat and gave us a ton of tips that I’ve been able to use at home. I would highly recommend her!
Our instructor was Edward. He was fantastic. made us work very hard but fair. worked with each person on their area of need and would not leave the stroke until the person made progress the best session I have ever had will ask for Edward again when I visit again
