Saddlebrook Resort has a well-deserved reputation for staging one of the most—if not, the most—demanding tennis programs on the planet. The underlying philosophy owes much to the training techniques of the legendary Australian Davis Cup coach and notorious taskmaster Harry Hopman. His was a taxing regimen designed at once to improve technique and push the envelope of his charge’s stamina and endurance. That reputation for toughness draws aspiring juniors to its academy and committed adults, the latter attracted to the blend of rigorous workouts and Saddlebrook’s full resort amenities.
Saddlebrook Resort garnered awards for its design when it opened in 1981. The 480-acre layout, 25 miles north of Tampa, places the lodging, restaurants, shops, a lakesize swimming pool, tennis courts, spa, golf clubhouse, and meeting rooms at the center of a halo of golf fairways, condos, and residential neighborhoods. Centralizing all of the major amenities creates what they call a “Walking Village.” Foliage is lush, ponds and lakes dot the property, and birds are abundant, including several endangered species for which this is a refuge and a rookery.
This is hardly the setting you’d expect for the mother of all hard-core tennis camps, but having all those amenities provides relief from the rigors of the daily regimen while its guard gate provides privacy and security—one reason touring pros visit between tournaments to work on their games. Its juniors, both live-in and short term, hope the program will set them on the road to greatness (or at least a college scholarship), while adults come looking to get in shape, test their physical mettle, or perhaps search for a magic elixir to cure, once and for all, the flaws in their game. It is also often true that the adults frequently underestimate the physical demands a program like this makes, and that even though none has ever in his or her life played five hours of tennis a day, they somehow think they are ready for five hours a day of drills.
Although the historical philosophy of the program has to push you to the point that your game breaks down, find what is salvageable in the rubble, and rebuild from there. That said, after my last visit I came away thinking that this approach has mellowed somewhat in recent years. In my early participation in the Hopman program, as it was known then, I remember being chastised for ignoring a feed too wide for me to reach, only to have the next fed wider until I learned that it was crucial to make an attempt even when you thought you had no chance of reaching the balls. I remember, too, the so-called “bucket of ball” drills and “kamikaze” drills that had you scampering right and left and back again until you pleaded exhaustion or the pro was convinced you’d had enough.
My sense is that while the regimen remains demanding, the boot-camp approach has been abandoned. None of the pros on my latest visit adopted an in-your-face drill sergeant’s demeanor (though I was told that if that’s what you want, it is available). Instead, they established key concepts essential to hitting well—early preparation, eyes on the ball, full follow-through—and then ran drills and competitive exercises to put those concepts into practice. Still, there were times when we were grateful for the break afforded by the need to pick up balls.
Although there are exceptions, you typically stay with the same pro throughout your stay (barring his or her days off), so they oversee your progress first-hand. They tailor the work to the abilities of the campers they oversee. Rather than stand in one place and hit picture-perfect strokes, you pretty much have to run for every ball. Like the pros, you’ll do a lot of two-on-one drills, and if your skills permit it live-ball drills and competitive games with the other campers on your court. The process can be exhilarating, demoralizing, or both, but you will come away from this program knowing where you stand with respect to your aerobic conditioning and what you really need to do to take your game to the next level.
If courts alone were the measure of a great tennis resort, then Saddlebrook would rank near the top. It has 45 courts altogether, including hard, clay, red clay, Rebound Ace (the surface formerly used at the Australian Open) and grass, all of which—the grass included—are available to guests. The major complex is near the center of the resort. There is a secondary complex a mile away in Lakeside Village, which is also the site of the 3,000-square-foot fitness center and high-performance complex and where the juniors enrolled in the academy work out. All of the courts are laid out in clusters of two to five separated by an awning-covered patio furnished with chairs and a refrigerated water fountain.
Tennis Staff: Although Harry Hopman, the legendary Australian Davis Cup coach, died in 1985, the organization he built survives. The core group of staff, many longtime Saddlebrook pros, expands and contracts based on how many adults are enrolled in the programs—as many as are needed to keep the student:pro ratio at 4:1 of less.
Tennis Programs: Although the resort itself offers some perfunctory stroke-of-the-day clinics (run by tennis-academy staff), the real reason a tennis player would come here is the Hopman-inspired camps.
Unlike some other dedicated facilities and college-campus programs, Hopman’s does not include any meals in the package, so for other dining you’re left to fend for yourself at the quite good but pricey restaurants at the resort itself or pile into cars for trips beyond the resort. Caveat: The Saddlebrook program can be among the most physically demanding of all the camps, so start a workout regimen weeks before you come down. Bring two pairs of tennis shoes, several changes of clothes (washers and dryers are available in each lodging cluster), a hat, sunblock, two racquets if you have them (broken strings are commonplace), and overgrip.
Off Court
Golf Courses: Saddlebrook has two 18-hole courses, both designed by Arnold Palmer, and an Arnold Palmer Golf Academy. Tee times for any of the following courses can be reserved.
Palmer Course: This course is characterized by open, undulating fairways, and an abundance of lakes, streams and ponds. Par: 71. Length: 5,212-6,469 yards.
Saddlebrook Course: Though flatter than the Palmer course, this one is also tighter, with tree-lined fairways and water on most of its holes. Par: 70. Length: 5,183-6,603 yards.
Spa & Fitness Center: The 7,000-square-foot Spa in the walking village has 12 treatment rooms offering massages, hydrotherapy treatments, and some beauty services; however, it is currently closed. Campers who can still walk at the end of the day are welcome to use the 3,300-square-foot, state-of-the-art fitness center in Lakeside Village, a 10-minute walk from the Superpool, but it’s rate that anyone does so. It has a full line of Cybex equipment plus treadmills, stair steppers, recumbent bicycles, elliptical trainers, and rubber-encased freeweights all in rooms with views of a swimming pool or volley ball pit. Personal trainers are on hand to help you craft a workout regimen. There is also an adjacent high-performance sports center, which offers specialized training programs often to professional athletes.
The centerpiece of the resort is its half-million-gallon, amoeba-shaped Superpool, said to be the largest in Florida. At 270 feet long, it is vast enough to contain a 25-meter lap pool, water volleyball and water basketball courts, and a diving area. Around it are children’s wading pools and two heated whirlpools. There is another swimming pool near the Sports Village & Fitness Center. Otherwise, recreation run to bike trails around the property and bass fishing in the privately stocked lakes.
Children's programs: The S’Kids Club operates year round providing supervised activities for kids ages 4-12.
Dining: The TD’s Sports Bar has light fare and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Dempsey’s Steakhouse is currently closed; however it’s menu prime beef and seafood is available at TD’s Sports Bar. There’s also a pool bar for lunch and poolside cocktails.
Accommodations
There are a total of 790 rooms and suites at Saddlebrook, most of them in 50-unit clusters variously arrayed near the main clubhouse and pool, or out along the golf fairways. Each cluster has an ice machine and washer/dryer. The most basic accommodation is a hotel room with two double beds and a private balcony or patio. The alternatives are one- and two-bedroom suites (which anywhere else would be called condos). These have full kitchens (with coffee makers and dishwashers; most have microwaves, if not you can request one), separate living and dining areas, and one or two bedrooms, each with a full bath. The living room opens onto a patio or balcony. High-speed Internet access is available throughout the resort.
Anyone who enrolls in the Saddlebrook International Tennis program is eligible for discounted room rates. By booking tennis and lodging together, you get a deluxe guest room, 5 hours/day of intensive tennis, complimentary court time, daily lunch, and access to the fitness center and spa. One- and two-bedroom suites with full kitchens are also available.
Getting there
Seasons: The resort and its Hopman tennis programs operate year-round; however, given the grueling nature of these clinics, you should think twice about coming in summer—unless, of course, you want to work out in hot, humid conditions. Principally for that reason, the camps are generally two to three times larger during the fall, winter, and spring than in summer.
This is my third year in a row at Saddlebrook. My first year was great, second year had some issues, and this year was pretty good. Overall, it’s a great place to really get steeped in tennis, esp. versus Newcombe Ranch or Amelia Island. Strengths – One of the few places you can get 5 hours of tennis a day. – Large number of adults, so they can generally match each court of four evenly – Pros are all knowledgeable, and they do a good mix of technique, drills, and games. – You will get better with he repetition – Junior program is really really good (I had boys 10 and 12). Weaknesses – My main reason for a Saddlebrook is that it seems to have more players at the 4.5 level (like me). However, this time this wasn’t really the case, though the pro made up for it with some extra time. – They messed up my schedule the first day, though they did recover. Last year, they did the same thing and had no pro for us. I’d recommend making sure they are ready for you as it seems disorganized. – Rooms are really old and outdated, and not clean (in fact I killed a cockroach one day). It’s probably the worst hotel room I’ve stayed in since I’ve graduated college. You definitely go for the tennis not the rooms. – The food options are limited for dinner (and not that great), but the lunch at the pool cafe is excellent.

I booked a two day stay at Saddlebrook for the tennis camps and wasn’t sure what to expect. I arrived early that morning and mistakenly thought I could sign up on the spot. I was informed that classes were booked for the entire week so needless to say I was thoroughly dejected. However, the staff couldn’t have been more accommodating. The staff took down my number and said someone would contact me shortly. In the meantime Pete from the Pro Shop, with 30 years experience, gave me advice on strings, tension and even checked the tension of my racket free of charge. Pete also provided me with the new Rodger Federer Legacy balls in exchange for my feedback. A short time later, Tennis Director Shawn McGee greeted me, apologize for any confusion and delivered on his promise to make things right. The tennis camps were as advertised. The instructors were friendly, knowledgeable and kept things going at a steady pace. All participants were grouped according to skill level. The majority of the 40 plus courts were clay and well-maintained. Water, Gatorade and fruit were readily available where you trained. However, the highlight of my stay was the one-on-one instruction with Shawn McGee. In 5 minutes, (yes 5 minutes) Shawn had me hitting consistent shots with ease. He also dramatically improved my serve. Shawn simplified things which allowed me to focus on core fundamentals. I would highly recommend giving Saddlebrook a try. Personally, I look forward to returning.

Saddlebrook Resort’s tennis getaway was so nuch fun. It was out of my comfort box to go away for a long tennis weekend with my friends (a few of them it was a repeat trip to Saddlebrook) — Saddlebrook did not disappoint in any way. Having 2 full days of tennis (Saturday and Monday)- with Sunday as a down day– was a perfect schedule for our group. We were challenged with our Pro Mark and Larry and learned some things we needed to work on to improve our game. The instruction was given in a positive manner. On our last day of the clinic– we started getting confident in our skill improvements. To the point where one of our ladies said to our Pro Mark who was feeding us tennis balls– “Is that the best you can do?” Lots of laughs for sure. All of us are in our 50’s– so no one was going to quit their day job and go on the tennis circuit. The instruction was geared to our skill level and our desire to play the best we can with a touch of fun competition. Definitely going back in 2020. Thank you, Saddlebrook.

I recently had great experience with Coach Will D. Rhame, my first 3 hours with Tennis!! I was very impressed with his style to proceed the coaching by maximizing my own natural inclination and reaction to the ball. He didn’t teach me the posture 1-2-3, but he emphasized a lot on how to keep connected with the ball by eye tracking but also by mentally focus. I think it was extremely useful and I can even do a serve after this 3 hours. Greatest lesson ever! Thanks Will!
HP
We were very fortunate to have Will Rhame as our coach for a three day, intensive clinic. His style of instruction was very logical and made a great deal of sense. His teaching style was very positive and encouraging. He makes very practical suggestions to allow you to understand the physics of tennis and his insight helps you to understand the reasoning behind his techniques.. As two long term USTA players who have experienced many different coaching styles, Will was by far the best. The resort was fine for a three day stay and I would highly recommend the tennis program for any level. If you’re lucky enough to spend your time with Will as your coach, you will come away with a renewed confidence in your game and appreciation of the skill and competence of a great teacher.

I spent two glorious days in the Hopman tennis program at Saddlebrook. I’ve had many lessons over the past 10-15 years, but I came away from this experience thinking that it was the best ever — most intensive, most individualized. My teacher both days was a young pro named Richard, who was just terrific. He broke strokes down into their component movements and weight shifts, explaining the underlying rationale every step of the way. Exactly what I needed! (I also got some excellent feedback from a pro named Juan.)
AS
Hank was our tennis pro and exhibited endless patience and good hunour. He was very good at intellectualizing and communicating the parts of strokes. We made great strides in our games in just two days!
KR
Another week of great tennis at Saddlebrook! The instruction is excellent and as intense and active as you want. They go to all means to match player levels on court and to ensure you receive the instruction and challenge that you request. They provide group warm-ups both before the morning and afternoon sessions – these warm-up sessions are thorough and very effective. The rooms are slowly being upgraded so ask for a renovated room. After 12 years, we are still going back!
MH
I had a great time! My wife got me this for my birthday I flew down by myself the rooms are giant w a full kitchen and sitting area, get a car as you can go to the casino and to Berns steak house to eat. The tennis facilities are top notch. The instruction was perfect it has improved my game. I did all five hours for three days and it nearly killed me… Next time I may just do the mornings and enjoy myself. If you plan on doing the full days be in shape. I look forward to returning.

My friends and I just finished our five day visit at Saddlebrook with the Saddlebrook (Hopman) program. Our visit has exceeded our expectations. Our coaches (Coach Larry and Coach Will) are top notch. Not only did they provide great feedback with regard to our mechanics, they also helped us with the mental aspect of our game. Prior to our lesson each morning, Coach Will would ask one of the resident pros to provide us with a demonstration and encourage us to work on that during our lesson. All of the pros there are personable and made our experience fun. In addition to the Har-Tru courts, Saddlebrook also has Hard, Red Clay, and Grass courts as well. The friendly staff at the Pro Shop can assist with making reservations to play on those courts. The rest of the resorts is very nice. All of the staff are professional and hospitable and the pool and spa are nice. The restaurants have a great selection of foods. If you are in a mood for something different, Wal-Mart and other restaurants are just a mile or two away from the resort. Although our room is a bit dated, the beds are very comfortable. Overall, we really enjoyed our time at Saddlebrook and will definite visit again in the future.
MS
My husband and I attended the clinic in October. Five hours a day was a grueling regimen for us, but because Will kept us so engaged, we didn’t want to stop. He kept the lessons fun and fast paced. We just can’t say enough about Will’s professionalism and expertise!
HM
I spent Thanksgiving weekend at the Saddlebrook Resort. I’m in my mid 50’s, and I started playing tennis when I was 40. I learned more during my weekend at the Saddlebrook Resort than I learned from years of taking lessons here and there with different coaches. I will definitely be back to continue improving my game.
SW
Excellent tennis for private lessons. Lodging decent. Food excellent and chef very accommodating with personal requests ( I am Vegan).

I just spent two and half days at Saddlebrook/Hoppman and will definitely return. Our group was 4 men in their 50s who are 4.0 players. We had Will as an instructor for all three days. Will is a very positive, energetic and enthusiastic pro. He offered direct and simple instruction. He made the trip! With her simple service instruction I got 12 straight first serves in the box. Thanks will!
BR
The Saddlebrook tennis instruction is excellent. Our group spent two days with Will and learned tons about the game and had lots of fun while doing so. Though the tennis is intensive, this is not just for experienced players. The team of pros were just as committed to working with beginners and made everyone feel welcome and special. Highly recommend.
DR
My husband and I along with another couple enjoyed our 2-day tennis camp at Saddlebrook Tennis Hopman Program. Our Coach Will and the entire staff were fantastic. The accommodations exceeded expectations and the restaurants and cafes served excellent food. The tennis program is the best we have ever experienced. We highly recommend Saddlebrook and the Hopman Program.
SW
I was at junior summer tennis camp at Harry Hopman in Saddlebrook back in 80’s. After all these years, I took lessons as an adult player and I must say, I thank them for a evergreen training method and intensity of tennis drills depends on your skill level. As for staff, from the director Mr. Howard Moore, who was there when I was a junior!, to coaches and people at the tennis shop are very professional and nice people. That being said, I would highly recommend this place for any ages, any experience level in tennis, becasue one thing I know is that you go home with much improved tennis and also great shape from all the trainings.
JS
The tennis experience at Saddlebrook is outstanding. Excellent tennis facility in a lovely setting. We attended the high performance clinics and the pros kept it fast paced and fun. They were great at zeroing in on exactly what we needed. Howard and Shawn run a great program. A must go experience. Already planning our next trip!
DW
I had a wonderful time and learned a lot. I had Coach Will and we started at the basics and worked the baseline, serve, volleys, drop shots, return serves. Coach Will gave me instructions that helped and terminology that I had not heard of before. I definitely came away I think improved but things to work on. I had an individual day lesson & I hope to come back again and would love to come back and have a lesson with 3 others to learn double strategy. I was disappointed in arriving at 7:50 and since I had to get up and 6:00 and leave the home at 6:30 and when I arrived I thought there would be at least a banana but no food the entire day, except for lunch time that I paid for my own lunch. The brochure and site says to include food and refreshments.
NW
Just finished my second stint at Saddlebrook and the program continues to exceed my expectations. The pros are top notch. In about 2 hours, Shawn managed to fix my forehand and had me consistently hitting with top spin (which I’ve never been able to accomplish) and power. Will helped me develop my serve and got me to concentrate on keeping my eye on the ball, such that I feel confident in getting my first serve in, with power. I attended 5.5 days and have left a much better player than when I arrived. The secret to Saddlebrook’s success is, I think, the flexibility and knowledge of the pros. The really good ones take different approaches that suit whomever they are teaching on any particular day and the just-good ones are still knowledgeable and can help tune your game. All of the pros there are personable and make your experience fun, and Howard (the director) is a friendly force of nature. I encourage everyone to stop in the Pro Shop and talk with Pete, the master racquet tech there. He set me up with several demo racquets, patiently answered my neophyte questions, and is just generally a warm and sharing guy. Also, shout out to Zack (Zach?) for teaching me about the physics behind different types of string. The rest of the resort is fine. All of the staff are professional and hospitable and the pool and spa are nice. As is mentioned elsewhere, the rooms are a bit dated and not as luxurious as you might expect. That being said, they all feature balconies or patios and the beds are comfy. I will continue to rave about the tennis program and encourage other players to check it out.
XC
I am an intermediate player and had two full days of adult tennis camp with Will. He is an excellent instructor – patient, attentive and also very helpful in pointing my areas of improvement. Will is also very positive and helped players how to prepare themselves both physically and mentally for the game. Lastly, he’s also an incredibly funny guy which made the whole experience incredibly fun and enjoyable for a recreational player like me. It was an extremely rewarding experience and I would definitely go again.
JQ
I came to the tennis academy for three straight years and had the best experience of my life. It’s a small school, but the students become very close. We train together, hurt together, and have fun together. It doesn’t take long to realize that these people become a second family, which you can always reach out to no matter what. The academics could be stronger, but if you’re diligent about your work and understand that you need to prepare for college, you will do fine. In the long-run, this Saddlebrook family becomes a wide network of talented, hard-working, and culturally rounded people sprinkled all over the world. It’s a gift. If you’re a parent wondering if you would like to send your kid to Saddlebrook Prep, consider this… I believe that half of the responsibility of a parent is to develop roots for their children, instil great values at home. The other half of the responsibility is to give them wings, let them out of the house and experience the real world. Saddlebrook is an unbeatable experience for kids because they will be nurtured and given a solid program, but they will also have the chance to make their own choices, which is what will make them grow. Shout out to the teachers, coaching and resort staff.

Prior to the spring USTA spring season, I had the most amazing tennis experience of a lifetime and would highly recommend this tennis academy to those who are willing to grind it out to significantly improve their game. Howard the director has assembled the dream team of pros. Every pro is of the highest caliber and does one on one needs assessments to ensure they can help players achieve their specific goals. The combination of personalized attention, one on one coaching, skill drills, and live ball action helped me build my confidence and truly believe in myself. After five days of intensive training, I flew home and immediately applied my learnings to be a much more offensive minded player. My winning record has improved and my spring USTA combo team went to States . The pro, Will Rhame, whom I had the opportunity to work with the most made a significant and lasting impact on not only my technique, game, and footwork but more importantly my mindset. Before, during and after I play, I think about his advice and tips. Thus when I walk off the courts after giving it my all, I know he is proud and is my biggest fan regardless of the results of the day. I will definitely go back and would be honored to work with Will again. He has continued to support and encourage me throughout the summer USTA season. Winning record continues to improve and thanks to Will’s coaching, I will be going to States on 3 different summer including singles.
JS
Clinics were run by very positive, attentive, supportive, experienced, knowledgeable, and helpful pros. Will Rhame worked with my wife and I, and we are grateful for his mindfulness approach, this was one of the best clinics we have attended.

I’ve been to Saddlebrook on numerous occasions. Started out going as a “tag along” and while my husband was in the “tennis camp”, I was enjoying the resort and taking an occasional 1 hour tennis lesson. Once I got involved in the 5 hour a day tennis camp, I was hooked. I loved what I was learning and recognized the difference the instruction was making for my tennis future. This year’s trip was a bonus as a foursome from home made the trip together. Will – was our tennis coach and I was delighted to have his insights helping us immensely with the mental approach to the game. In a short amount of time he helped each of us with our strengths & weaknesses, along with improving our playing ability with a few precious tweeks to our racquet preparation, FOCUS, and competitive attitude. I found GREAT Value in his approach, it was just what I needed and is already making a difference. Everyone at Saddlebrook — with Hopman Tennis and the Resort, went above and beyond in providing exceptional customer service. I look forward to the next trip to Saddlebrook!!!

I am 67 years of age; this is my first tennis camp. My tennis friends from home asked if I would like to join them. I said I would try anything once. It has been such a good experience I will come back to Saddlebrook again! We were a group of 4. Our pro/coach was Will. He was the BEST! His drills and instruction were appropriate for our skill level and age! He addressed what we needed AND what we asked for. I liked that he spent time on the mental part of the tennis game. I left as a TENNIS WARRIOR! The only disappointing part of the trip was the weather; we arrived after Tropical Storm Alberto! We were literally washed out one afternoon! Howard, the tennis director, scheduled a rain check day while we were there. Weather did not always cooperate! Saddlbrook Resort is lovely. The site is luxurious! Staff was always friendly. Pete in the Tennis Pro Shop shared tricks to wrapping a grip. Ben at the outdoor sports bar/grill by the pool was attentive and always smiling! Food and service at TD Sports Bar was excellent. We did not go off site to eat the 5 days we were there. THANK YOU SADDLEBROOK!

My wife and I showed up for 4 nights and 3 days – including 3 days of adult tennis camp. First time visit. Could not have been happier with the tennis and the instruction. Larger numbers of players each day. We had the same instructor (Will Rhame) for 5 of the six “sessions”. We were both very happy with him and he added much to our games(me a 3.5, wife a 4.0). In fact for the first 3 sessions, it was just the 2 of us on a single court with Will. He kept his suggestions simple and did not try to make major changes. “Racquet back, watch the ball”. Simple, but easily forgotten. On our last day, we had one player on our court who was not at the same level as other 3, which made it awkard, but was not horrible. The morning stretch with Larry is awesome an something that many adults ignore. Mostly, this was FUN. The entire staff was terrific. A much better experience than some resorts offer with a menu of clinics to sign up for. The tennis was everything we had hoped for and we will return. Howard Moore (the director) even bought us all drinks at the pool one afternoon!! We also were offered a (free) individual video analysis. As for the resort, it is a little tired and in serious need of a face lift. But the room was comfortable, the pool inviting, and the food adequate. Also, there are plenty of options off site for food and night life if one is interested. The poolside bartender was overwhelmed and a second person would be a huge upgrade. We ate breakfast and lunch in our room which saved time, energy, and $. A welcome break in the middle of 5 hours of tennis daily. It is too easy to dwell on the negatives, but our trip was fun, relaxing, and added to our tennis games and enjoyment. If one wants to ensure equal caliber of players for your level, bring a group for even more fun.
ML
I received both mental and physical improvements to my game. I was not expecting the mental. The critique using video was very helpful. We worked on all aspects and also spent time on anything specific that we wanted to work on. I also enjoyed it.

I’ve gone to Saddlebrook for four years. This time stayed on site, in a deluxe room. Their accommodations get you reduced rates for the tennis, and they give a complimentary credit card worth $30 for each day of your stay. For me that was $180 to spend in the facility! I used to stay at a cheap hotel offsite. Not anymore. The tennis is well organized, with lots of court time, and very good instruction. I’m 4.5, but they are worth it for 3.0, and up, and for doubles teams as well. The women on the court next to me, who apparently played doubles against each other quite often, were so pleased by their lessons, that they requested the same instructor for the week.
MJ
I just returned from a glorious 4 days at Saddlebrook Golf and Tennis Resort. The trip was organized by a good friend and fellow tennis addict. He and I have been playing for around 3 years and play at a 3.5-4.0 level. The facility was very well maintained, attractively landscaped and fully equipped with a full-service spa, humongous pool and solid restaurants in addition to the golf and tennis facilities. Despite its 30+ years the facility has held its age well and provided a scenic background to our tennis exploits. The rooms were clean, spacious and well appointed. The housekeeping staff did a great job including reading our notes and accommodating our requests consistently. The goal of our trip was simple, tennis, tennis and more tennis. We achieved our goal and more. I cannot emphasize enough how instrumental the Tennis Program Director, Howard Moore was in the realization of that goal. When we expressed some concerns about one of the trainers we had been assigned on our first day, Howard, stepped up to the plate and address our concerned by stepping in and training us himself until another trainer was available. Howard is a dynamic, charismatic personality with an obvious passion for the sport and his training program. His enthusiasm and energy are both endless and contagious. As a result you keep hitting, no matter how tired you are, hoping to absorb as much as you can, for yourself and for him. We had a great time and look forward to our next visit.

I spent a week at the Saddlebrook Resort outside of Tampa, FL, and I participated in 5 mornings and 4 afternoons of tennis clinics. We worked with Miguel throughout our time there and he was an outstanding coach who helped us develop a tennis weapon to use in our games. From time to time, we worked with other pros there, including head pro Howard. All the pros there were all very sharp, able to figure out which part of our games needed work almost immediately. They learned our skill level and tailored drills or recommendations to our games. I came out of the stay with a lot of stuff to work on, and upon returning I found that my game improved a lot. The clay courts also were very easy on the knees and body. I’m very glad I went.
DH
The Hopman Tennis Instructors are phenomenal. We have been many times and the amount of tennis each day in clinics is unmatched by any other club. However if you want you can just hit for 5 hours, but we go to learn, drill and get our butts in shape. The pros have so much fun with our group as we are eager to learn. We are headed back again in July. We cannot wait.
TH
I had a wonderful time. Miguel Ternera was my coach for the two days that I was there and he was absolutely excellent! He taught to my skill level in a way that I could understand and implement changes straight away. He is incredibly knowledgeable and his teaching techniques are effective. He pushed me hard, but not so hard that I felt defeated. I left the training wanting more and wishing I could stay longer. A.j. Stilwell led our morning and afternoon stretches and also did a little demonstration each morning of the proper way to do backhand and forehand. He is amazing and truly impressive. Overall, I had a wonderful experience and I would highly recommend Saddlebrook Tennis to anyone who is looking to improve their technique and game.
MR
Coach Miguel is an amazing coach, he made this trip so enjoyable with his experience, knowledge, and drills it was a pleasure to learn from him and pick his brain. ‘Aye yai yai’, I can still hear it when I don’t move my feet, thanks again coach Miguel. The Tennis shop is amazing, very friendly and knowledgeable such a pleasure you can tell they are passionate about tennis. The rooms are ok, they could use an upgrade, but with all the tennis I played the room was simply a place to rest my head, and the Spa was amazing, a must visit if you’re going to be on the courts for a few days. All and All GREAT tennis facility for all levels.
TO
I travelled with 4 fabulous friends, one with a birthday wish to visit Saddlebrook Resort to play tennis and have a girls’ long weekend. Our mornings started off with 3 hours of fast-pace drills, lunch break, then 2 hours more of tennis. Personally, I was exhausted (out of shape), but I loved the clinics and received both great instruction and a great workout from Coach Miguel. Erin in the Hopman office is fabulous, if you have any requests, questions, etc., she is your go to woman. Then there is The Howard Moore, director, social director, love all around go to guy. I would highly recommend the Saddlebrook Resort Hopman Tennis program and look forward to returning in the fall.

Came to the resort in mid-March 2018 for the 5-day tennis program. We were worried that we might struggle to complete 25 hours of tennis instruction over 5 days, but were pleasantly surprised that we all survived, and occasionally thrived, during the program. The teaching staff were great (thanks Marc and Larry!) and helped us to go from “hitting shots” to “hitting spots”. The clay courts were easy on the joints, and we were teamed up with players who were at our level. The morning dynamic warm up and stretch were fun (yes, fun), and the demonstrations were inspirational. Occasionally, we ran out of water/gatoraide during the day, and a few times, the fruit truck failed to come, but these were the only inconveniences that we experienced. I would totally recommend this camp for anyone who wants to take their game to the next level.

The tennis program is AMAZING!!! The ratios of players to pros is ideal (4:1) allowing the pro to focus on individual needs. We did 2.5 days and wished we could have done more! The tennis personal are extremely nice and customer satisfaction is very important. The resort grounds are beautiful! It is isolated so renting a car is a good idea. We used Uber to get around, but it adds up fast. There are only three restaurants on the resort and the food is very limited. We found the poolside to have the best service and food. Vegetarian options are VERY limited. The rooms are clean and spacious, although very dated. Bottom line, I would return because the tennis program is so good.

Nice resort, accommodations good, tennis facility good and tennis pros very knowledgeable. The implementation of stretching was very on point as that’s an important part of the game. We enjoyed our professional very much but perhaps might have liked to have time with a few others just to get a sample for our first time. Howard was a wonderful leader, very informative as well as friendly and energetic. Great demonstrations as well as strategic things to work on. Overall, a great experience and we would recommend to our friends.
DS
The tennis professionals were friendly and knowledgeable. The accommodations were spacious and conveniently located close to the tennis courts. Howard, the tennis director, was very welcoming and involved in the teaching on each and every court. The pool area was lively during the weekend.

Just got back from Saddlebrook had a great time. Instruction was mixed first 2 days we had a a young teacher who focused only on drills but third day had Mark who was full of knowledge. Saddlebrook made it up to us by offering a free day of instruction next year. Great value and they aim to please.

The tennis program is very efficiently run with good, effective pros on some well maintained clay surface (other surfaces ie red clay, hard and grass are also available). The format is very well thought out: 10 min stretch and warm up, stroke of the day demonstration, 3 hours of play, lunch break, then another 2 hours of play. Every member of the tennis teach staff are attentive and eager to pass on any tips that they feel might help your game. This year especially it had a very positive and upbeat vibe. I have been attending this program for over 8 years and I always enjoy the variety of coaching staff. Even Howard very energetically comes over and gives you a workout!

Exceptional overall experience – from warm up to pro time, never seems to fail and beat my expectations. This is my 6th year attending at least twice a year, our pro Tyler this time tailored an amazing program suited to my groups needs. He was extremely knowledgeable and engaging and really in tune with our level of play and crafted specific drills to support our needs and growth.

Another great trip (4 years in a row). Shawn was great in adjusting and finding the right group given some limitations I was dealing and Robert, Jeff, AJ and Hank all great instructors. You also must visit Peter in the pro shop – he is a stringing guru and I always leave with a great set-up.

We came to Saddlebrook to celebrate my birthday with a few friends. The clinic was outstanding. Howard and Shawn run a great program. Even though there were over 40 people each day, the program seemed to be very organized and people seemed to have a lot of fun. Out pro Tyler was terrific. He is very knowledgeable and knows how to explain things in many different ways so everybody gets to understand it. I wish I was able to do more than 3 days! Definitely learnt a lot. The Pool Bar is a great place to go after the clinic. And the steakhouse has some very delicious things on the menu. The resort is beautiful and well maintained. Overall we had a wonderful experience and we will be back soon!
MS
The tennis and accommodations were wonderful. Mark our instructor for tennis was dedicated and responsive.

I travel with a group of 8 guys. This is our 4th year at Saddlebrook. The pros are very knowledgeable and on par with the level of coaching that we require.. Howard jumped in on our clinic and spent a very intense 30 minutes with us. It was Fantastic and invaluable!!

Such a great experience at the Hopman Tennis Center. Their rennis program strength for serious tennis players who want improve their game. All the pros are very experienced and enthusiastic. Coach Larry was wonderful, I learned so much and had the best lessons. Director of adult program Howard Moore personally observed and designed the best plan for improvement for each and every student! The courts are beautiful and well maintained. I highly recommend this program!!!

My most recent trip to Saddlebrook Tennis for adults was so beneficial to my game. I left with feeling very positive and excited, knowing that there is new potential in my game. I have been there several times over the years, and during each visit the pros focus on what will lead to improvements in my particular game and strokes. They clearly explain in a very understandable way the reason behind why to change a stroke or maybe something to add. I like that they don’t make huge changes in my strokes, instead focusing on what is going to lead to significant stroke and game improvements specific to me. And that gets me feeling excited and looking forward to working on my game and having even more fun playing.

Howard Moore and team run a first rate tennis operation at a beautiful tennis facility on the amazing Saddlebrook resort. Spent five days hitting thousands of tennis balls with excellent players with never more than four players to a court. The tennis staff is exceptional and extremely knowledgeable (had the opportunity to work with several instructors) providing tons of insights and instructional guidance throughout the week. All the tennis instructors had a wealth of playing experience at the top college level and beyond, but also had years of experience coaching. The drills were very intense and well structured. All the instructors worked to the common goal of improving my game and taking it to the next level – which they did. This is a great tennis program for anyone looking to make big jumps in their game. Look forward to coming back real soon.

Unfortunately, our first visit to Saddlebrook was during a Florida wide unusually coldspell. Like everybody in Florida, we froze. Yet our child, a competitive tennis player, absolutely adored the tennis program (especially the coaches) and insisted that we go back for our next Holiday. WHAT ELSE CAN YOU ASK FOR? Thus, a few months later, we were back at Saddlebrook and the experience was even better. We can’t post a review on Saddlebrook without mentionning Peter, the erudite & humble stringer, who, simply put, is a really nice person.
We want to see your racquet sports vacations! When you’re documenting your trip, tag @TennisResortsOnline on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn and use #TROAdventures for a chance to be featured on our page.

Hank was our tennis pro and exhibited endless patience and good hunour. He was very good at intellectualizing and communicating the parts of strokes. We made great strides in our games in just two days!
My husband and I attended the clinic in October. Five hours a day was a grueling regimen for us, but because Will kept us so engaged, we didn’t want to stop. He kept the lessons fun and fast paced. We just can’t say enough about Will’s professionalism and expertise!
