There may or may not be an adobe cottage within the walls of the white-columned mansion at the heart of the Silverado Resort.
General John Franklin Miller, who later became a U.S. Senator, built the elegant 14-room home in the 1870s on a site along Napa Valley’s Milliken Creek. Before he could begin construction, however, he faced a dilemma: there was already a Spanish adobe cottage on that spot, and local superstition held that ill fortune would befall whomever destroyed the adobe structure. Taking no chances, Miller is said to have built around it, a possibility that the three-foot-thick walls at the southwestern corner of the mansion seem to support.
Whatever the truth to that legend, the 1,200-acre Miller estate ultimately became the Silverado Resort, welcoming its first guests in 1966 and quickly emerging as a major vacation and conference option in the Napa Valley. It has a full range of amenities, including 36 holes of golf, a spa and fitness center, and a dozen hard courts.
USPTA Elite Pro Katie Dellich has presided over the resort’s tennis programs since 2012. Originally from Pennsylvania, she played Division I tennis for Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh then launched on a worldwide teaching and coaching career at resorts and clubs in places as far flung as the Maldives, Caribbean, Dubai, Hawaii, Mexico and as close as Virginia and Southern California before she finally settled in Napa.
Tennis Programs: Dellich and her staff offer the staple of clinics and private lessons, but have increasingly attracted attention for their three-day/two-night “Backhand, Vines and Volley” tennis getaways, holiday programming, customized camps, and—unusual in the Napa area—Spring Break and summer camps for kids that combine tennis with swimming and golf. Court Complex. Silverado’s 10 courts occupy two locations: there are three courts near the mansion, which is where a small room with a bare minimum of pro-shop accoutrements serves as the main staging area; there are another seven hard courts adjacent to the spa across the road. Court fees: free to guests.
Off Court
Golf Courses: Robert Trent Jones, Jr. originally designed the 36 holes of golf at Silverado. PGA Hall of Famer Johnny Miller subsequently redesigned both to treat golfers to oak-lined fairways, dozens of water crossings, and elevation changes.
Spa & Fitness Center: The Roman-inspired spa encompasses 16,000 square feet and offers an array of massages and treatments, including aromatherapy, Himalayan salt stone, Chardonnay sugar scrubs, deep-tissue massages, and packages tailored specifically to golfers. The men’s and women’s locker rooms have saunas and steam rooms and both open out onto a 25-meter lap pool with outdoor whirlpools, and garden treatment cabanas. The spa building also houses a well-equipped fitness center, with weight-training and cardiovascular equipment, as well as some 30 exercise classes, among them cardio, yoga, and step. A Spa Cafe serves smoothies, salads, coffees, and more.
In addition to the lap pool at the spa, there are nine other swimming pools scattered throughout the property. There are also courts for bocce.
Dining: There are several restaurants, chief among them The Grill, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, al fresco if you like, from a menu that focuses on Wine Country cuisine. There is also the Silverado Market and Bakery, for soups, salads, coffee, picnic fare, groceries, and miscellaneous items.
Accommodations
Rather than a central hotel, it has scattered its 370 rooms through more than a score of low-rise buildings. Every room has a balcony or terrace and everything from a junior suite to one with three bedrooms also has a wood-burning fireplace.
Getting there
Seasons: Year-round.
Travel Instructions: There is a county airport in Napa; however, most visitors arrive at either San Francisco International (SFO), Oakland International (OAK), or Sacramento International Airport. Travel time is roughly 1 hour from Oakland, 75 minutes from San Francisco or Sacramento.
Simply put, this is an amazing and unique tennis program, with unmatched tennis pros. If you are looking for skilled, knowledgeable pro’s this is the tennis facility for you in the Napa valley and beyond.

Visited Silverado for a long weekend attending a friends wedding. Was lucky enough to take a few clinics with Jacob and Katie while there. The clinics were fast-paced, informative, and a lot of fun. Wish I was there longer! Looking forward to my next visit!

Silverado is a beautiful resort with a great tennis staff that can get you connected with the local tennis enthusiasts. We had a great time playing tennis at the facility and met some outstanding tennis players.
DW
This was our family’s first visit to California. Absolutely wonderful weather in beautiful Napa Valley. My wife and I thouroughly enjoyed our pampered spa days while our daughter stayed on schedule with the resident tennis pros. Everyone was professional and courteous meeting our changing schedule and late notice. We will make this an annual visit.
SM
Jacob and Katie are just wonderful. The clinics they ran were fast paced, full of fun drills and very useful instruction. They were flexible and very personable. I would take lessons from either of them again in a heartbeat.
JC
Coaching was very professional. Coming for 2 days of morning clinics, it is not enough time to re-engineer my entire game and the coaches know that. They worked on footwork, touch and shot selection … not messing with my grip or swing(bad old habits). They were very accommodating of our requests and it is a beautiful setting.
CH
Great tennis destination. Jacob goes out of his way to pair guests with locals for matches and tournaments. Clinics are also excellent Silverado should be known for it’s tennis and not just Golf?
YM
I totally recommend to book tennis at Silverado Resort and Spa. I contacted Silverado Tennis to request social match for our weekend trip. I wanted to take either clinics or play social match with local club members. Jacob, a coach at Silverado, contacted me immediately to set up social matches with the club members and resort guests. He also stepped in to sub to play with us. It was a pleasure to play with them. The facility was beautiful and well maintained. Staff members were friendly and professional. I defenitely would like to come back to Silverado Resort to play tennis there.
IV
Great instructors. They really do teach you something each time and help you develop your game. Will also work on the nuisances of your particular game/techniques. Clinics haven’t had too many people that you didn’t get attention. Semi privates were great and the player I was paired up with were very friendly, with good attitudes, and love tennis and the community silverado builds and creates! Drive from East Bay, (over an hour) and I think it’s very much worth it. Haven’t had a bad experience and facilities are great! Only draw back is I am. It sure you have access to the gym after a clinic, but would be very nice to be able to get in the gym after a session. So I’ll have to check that out next time I am there.
AN
First off, it was great to get complementary private tennis lesson as part of the lodging. Jacob, the instructor was great and taught my wife and I within one hour a couple of new tennis skills
JS
Silverado is a lovely place for a family getaway involving golf or tennis! We had a lovely two-bedroom suite with a kitchen. The staff was extremely friendly – particularly the Director of Tennis who made sure we had matches to play with locals everyday! We can’t wait to visit again. The tennis clinic we took was great also.
EM
Nice, pretty club facility. Courts are in fair condition but no lights. Lacks tennis clubhouse/dedicated restrooms (shares pool area.)
RM
Lovely setting, great weather, with two excellent and friendly pros, Jacob Hansen and Katie Dellich.
NM
James Rutherford and Jacob Hansen were tennis instructors for all 3 of my children, as well as for me and my husband. They were always on time, always in a good mood and a smile, always patient. They worked well with beginner level (my kids), intermediate (myself) and advanced (my husband). We all learned a lot of technique from both instructors, which we have retained and incorporated into our game. I would highly recommend both of these instructors.
FM
We did a week of private lessons for our daughter who is going on to try out for the high school team. Scott Teller gave our daughter lessons. Scott was good about not overwhelming my daughter with information. He broke down the game into more a more simple and understandable view. This proved to be an effective method, and our daughter felt like she improved a lot, and has learned how to correct her mistakes. We felt as though Scott was patient, and the experience overall was fantastic. We will look for Scott next year: He is an excellent instructor.
LF
My husband and I had a great joint lesson with Jacob in the fall of 2012. So good, in fact, that I called after I got back to the room and made an appointment for a second lesson the next morning, this time just for me! My husband and I are at different levels, but he did a nice job of working with both of us and giving us both some tips to work on. And then in my lesson he really helped me correct an issue in my forehand.
LA
We had a great time here! Very accommodating to our needs.
RS
I had a great time playing tennis at the resort. Katie and Jacob were the 2 coaches and they organised a great group lesson which was so much fun. I also had 1 to 1 coaching and it really helped improve my game.
TD
Jacob and Katie are an amazing team. My son Andrew, has really developed his tennis skills under Jacob’s leadership. Jacob and Katie teach tennis in a way that is fun, creative and addictive.
RS
The instructor was very knowledgeable, skilled and easy to work with. The instructor offered great analysis of my style of game and easy instruction on how to improve. Visual tools were very helpful and it was the first time I had ever had that kind of instruction. The lesson was fun and will help improve my skill. I hope to return in the near future. Kudos to Jacob.
JC
I went to vacation at the Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, CA. The reason I went there was for my 50th birthday. I had a tennis lesson with the Tennis Pro Katie. Katie was simply amazing. What I liked about Katie is that she did not try to change my game but instead enhanced my already existing tennis skills. We worked on my serve and two handed backhand and saw a really big difference the following week playing at my home court. Thank you Katie !. Out of 1 to 5 stars I rate Katie a 10 stars.
JV
Location, location, location! Couple that with Jacob Hanson, the tennis instructor, and you have a match made in tennis heaven! My 24 year old son (novice player) and my 14 year old son (experienced) each took a lesson from Jacob. He went above and beyond what one would normally expect. He was the consummate professional and I will definitely look forward to visiting beautiful Napa Valley and particularly the Silverwood Tennis courts in the near future.

Silverado Resort has all the recreation and relaxation you need all on the beautiful resort property: Tennis, Golf, Swimming, Bocce, workout facility, Spa and Salon & restaurants. Silverado’s great location is is within minutes of downtown Napa and Yountville. It’s an amazing place for family get-aways and couples too. The tennis program is exceptional. The instructors for both kids and adults are fantastic. I have attended many of the Silverado tennis clinics and have had private instruction and the PBI instructors/method are the best. I can see marked improvement in my game and have retained valuable strategies. The tennis courts are centrally located near the main resort pool and mansion which is a plus.
AK
Lots of well maintained courts, tennis director helpful and nice. Lighting on the courts at night needs improvement.
LH
Great experience .. these PBI guys are top shelf who were professional, fun and in general just good guys. Always willing to help out and run a great program. This is a must see destination.
CE
I enjoyed and benefited from both a private lesson and the group clinics. Both were fun and instructional. The courts at Silverado are fantastic. I cannot comment on a weakness as there wasn’t one.
CL
Great instructors and setting. Beautiful weather, too!
JH
I really enjoyed the morning clinics at Silverado and went to a whole week’s worth of them. Each one was well taught to a range of abilities and definitely honed the skills intended. The only weakness I can put down is I wish they were longer! I would recommend the clinics to anyone visiting Silverado.
DJ
We enjoyed our 4 nights at Silverado. Jacob had arranged MXD miatches for us 3 mornings…good matches, nice people. Resort is beautiful with its setting in the Napa Valley. With tennis in the morning, seeing the valley & wineries in the afternoon and delicious dinners in the evening, we had a great time. Plan to return again!
DL
The tennis program is very good. I liked to do the clinics and could meet people to play. I think this was long over due for Silverado.
DS
You can’t go wrong with the Silverado Resort. Tennis and then wine tasting? Yes! The resort is situated in the hills of Napa and is led by Jacob Hansen and James Rutherford. They are two of PBI’s finest – really nice guys who care about not only tennis but also the people they teach. I was overly impressed with both of them as they offered me (a 4.0) the chance to play in a doubles pro-am with themselves and another pro. When I had to pass because of a commitment with the wife, they offered to hit with me the day after! They do a great job in organizing the clinics – called “stroke of the day” – and also do a nice job of matching up the talent in the classes by playing-in. They also do a great job of facilitating matches between guests. Taking my phone number and my availability was one of the first things that James did. The place is also very well priced – $20 for a clinic at privates at $80 or so. The trick is to save all of your money on the tennis courts in the morning so you can blow it at wineries in the afternoon. Bravo to the guys at Silverado. First-class experience all the way around.
JB
Friendly staff and beautiful setting. They create a wonderful environment for a tennis player.
JP
Beautiful property with plenty of courts. Jacob and James made sure we had all the lessons and matches that we wanted and we were able to get into some matches with some other guests and members. Both pro’s gave excellent tips and were patient with us. Can’t wait to go back!
GS
Jacob was a great! instructor! Very patient and very helpful! No weaknesses. Wish we could do another lesson.
LM
Napa Valley is beautiful, the staff at the Silverado resort are top-notch and I’d love to hold another meeting at this venue. Jacob Hansen assisted me prior to arrival and on-site he helped my Tennis Chair with the tournament. Kudos to Jacob on his exceptional customer service!

Recently visited the Silverado Resort to attend a business conference. During my down time I spent some time taking 2 hour long lessons. I am a novice player that recently started playing at the beginning of the year. The Silverado Resort is part of the PBI (Peter Burwash) group of international tennis instruction. I was not familiar with them until my visit, but was told that they all instruct the same way making it easy for some one to bring what they have learned from one place to another while travelling. My instructor was Jacob Hansen. Jacob was an excellent teacher and very patient. He used simple but effective techniques to improve my ground strokes as well as making better contact with the racquet. During my lessons over the two day period i was able to tune up both my forehand and back hand as well as develop decent shot placement over the court. This is something i would not have believed if you told me before my weekend working with Jacob. I was extremely pleased with the value of the lessons and would definitely recommend him as a pro to anyone looking for a good coach to motivate and push your skill set. The resort had all hard courts that were well maintained. There is no fee to use them for resort guests and club members. They have nice equipment for rental for the day. I really don’t have anything negative to stay about my tennis experience there. The resort is set on a large country club with a nice view of the surrounding Napa hills and is close to downtown Napa. We did not do much else on the resort so i cannot comment on the other amenities. The suite are large and accommodating but a little older than some other upscale resorts. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Would definitely recommend as a great place to consider for lessons if in the area.

Great hit with Jacob, arranged a fun match while visiting. Great place to play! Make sure you all say hi to Jacob when your there. He followed through at every level and made sure I had a great tennis experience. A must visit to the wine country.

We took our ladies 4.0 team to Silverado for a two day clinic and were VERY pleased. The level of instruction was excellent and lots of fun! This was shortly after the program had begun and we seemed to have the place all to ourselves. We had drills and instruction in the morning and then practice/play in the afternoon. The entire staff couldn’t have been better nor made us feel more at home. Lots of laughs and great skill development!
PD
It was all good!
CD
This is a beautiful place to enjoy a vacation and experience a wonderful tennis atmosphere. The tennis courts are bountiful and well maintained. Lessons and clinics are available daily and the tennis pros are very nice and knowledgeable. My game took a huge step forward. Thanks guys.
YW
I went to Silverado for a Girls Weekend. None of my friends played tennis so I made my way to the courts myself hoping to get in a game or lesson. Right away I was greeted and told that there was a drop-in at 4pm which I attended. I got a chance to play with others my level as well as play mixed with the pros there, Jacob and James. Afterwards, Jacob had set me up with some other ladies to play the next day. I had so much fun. I played 2.5 hours my first day, and then 3 hours the next. I had to cancel the lesson I had set up because I didn’t think my body could take anymore. In any case, I loved that I was able to get a lot of tennis in 2 days as well as being matched to play with people around my level. The courts are nice, but may be due for some resurfacing…there were a few cracks on one of the courts I had played on. Other than that, Silverado is a great destination for someone wanting to get some tennis in even if you don’t have a partner. I’m so glad I brought my rackets. Since I’m also a golfer, I got in a few hits at the driving range and chipping greens. Nice facility for practicing golf. I didn’t get a chance to play the golf course. I will definitely have Silverado in mind for a future vacation.

Wonderful Resort!! Great Tennis, great golf, beautiful spa. Loved it!!!

Exceptional fun

The Silverado is a perfect getaway for tennis lovers. Located in the heart of the wine country, it’s a relaxed, friendly resort with a new and improved tennis program. I had a great clinic with Jason. Small group setting, new information, affordable prices – it’s really going to improve my game. He planned a fun baseline / transition to net drill that kept us on our toes! I will be back for some more tennis and fun in the sun.
CK
Tennis facility was very nice. Pro was great, fixed a problem or two! Can’t beat the location in the heart of Napa.
KK
If you like cool summer morning tennis, this is the place for you. If you play tennis and your spouse golfs, this is the ticket! Beautiful and scenic surroundings and nice outdoor hardcourts. I emailed ahead of time and they were very quick to send a schedule and set up things for me while I was there for the week. Daily drills and the pros will help set up matches for your level of play. A great asset when you are preparing for a tournament. They have mixed and round robin during the week but check ahead before you go because some are on the weekend, too. The staff went over and above finding matches for practice and did a great job on the drills. They fixed my backhand and serve in two of the morning clinics where years of lessons at home didn’t seem to fix. Even got to play with some of the full time residents who were very nice and welcoming. The only concern is that a drop in drill had 8 on one court one morning…we still had fun but didn’t get to hit as many balls. Maybe 2 pros would have been better but being a drop in they didn’t know how many were coming each and every day. Maybe suggest a sign up if you know you are coming for sure to get a better feel for the numbers. Maybe offer better options for water/beverages like Gatorade or Soft Drinks especially if you are doing the drill. Maybe a “wine and cheese” tennis evening event since it is in the Wine Country. All and all a great experience and the staff is doing a great job! Thanks to James for his attention to details and even a thank you follow up. I don’t even get that at my home club in Ohio!!!! Also, thanks to Jacob for fixing my serve!
KK
I chose the Silverado because the resort’s tennis program is managed by Peter Burwash International. PBI has an outstanding reputation, and I was not disappointed! Jacob and James were both courteous and professional. Lessons with Jacob were challenging and enjoyable, and I noticed an immediate improvement in my level of play. Overall, the resort’s tennis program offered a variety of activities, the spa was relaxing, and the food at the resort’s restaurant was excellent(although it would be nice to see vegetarian options on the menu). I would highly recommend the Silverado for anyone planning a tennis vacation.
SC
I was just here with my girlfriend over the weekend and Silverado not only has a ton of well maintained courts, but a friendly and hard working staff who were great at organizing matches, clinics and lessons during our stay. James and Jacob were total professionals and made our vacation one to remember. I would highly recommend booking a clinic or lesson if you’re headed there.
RL
Great resort, Jacob was very accommodating. I like the PBI system. Don’t hesitate to go.
AS
My wife and I ad a very nice time at Silverado. Strengths: a multi-sport facility in the gorgeous Napa Valley. Tennis staff was exceptionally friendly and accommodating. Weaknesses:No vegetarian entrees at restaurant.

This was shortly after the program had begun and we seemed to have the place all to ourselves. We had drills and instruction in the morning and then practice/play in the afternoon. The entire staff couldn’t have been better nor made us feel more at home. Lots of laughs and great skill development!
It was all good!
This is a beautiful place to enjoy a vacation and experience a wonderful tennis atmosphere. The tennis courts are bountiful and well maintained. Lessons and clinics are available daily and the tennis pros are very nice and knowledgeable. My game took a huge step forward. Thanks guys.
Tennis facility was very nice. Pro was great, fixed a problem or two! Can’t beat the location in the heart of Napa.
Great resort, Jacob was very accommodating. I like the PBI system. Don’t hesitate to go.
My wife and I ad a very nice time at Silverado. Strengths: a multi-sport facility in the gorgeous Napa Valley. Tennis staff was exceptionally friendly and accommodating. Weaknesses:No vegetarian entrees at restaurant.
