It would be tempting to attribute Kurt Edelbrock’s commitment to tennis to the fact that he owns the courts at Taos Tennis at Quail Ridge Taos as well as the nearby swimming pool and building that houses the pro shop.
But the truth is Edelbrock has been running a solid program on these courts since 1980 (with a few brief lapses when owners mistakenly thought they could to better), long before he became the proprietor. And it’s also true that under his ownership the complex expanded from eight to ten courts, a necessity to meet the demand he created, especially in summer, when there are one or more tennis activities scheduled for adults every day. He supplements that with several sanctioned and unsanctioned tournaments during summer and fall and weekly sessions for juniors and a couple of summer junior day camps. And such is his passion, that even in winter, he’ll spread sheets of black visqueen (a polyethylene plastic) over a couple of courts to melt the snow, so it is actually possible to play there year-round.
“This is my heart and soul,” he told me as we sat courtside having beers after a late-afternoon clinic. “We’ve got such an athletic community that a facility like this can stay busy,”
If you show up at the courts—whether you rent one of the adjacent condos or stay anywhere else in town—and the staff will find a way to get you involved.
Edelbrock did not start out to be a tennis player. A solid athlete—he lettered in five sports and captained the football team at a small junior college in Southern California—he didn’t take up tennis until he was 22 and living in Arizona. He went on to graduate from the University of Arizona, studying kinesthesiology and biomechanics, where noted tennis coach Bill Murphy helped him with his game even though he wasn’t on the team. That led to a head pro position in Tucson and in 1980 to an offer to run what was then the Tennis Ranch of Taos.
“From the time I was 10 I wanted to run a resort,” he remembers. “And because I started tennis later in life, I still have a lust for the game. I enjoy every day I’m on the tennis court.”
At Taos Tennis he has either a clinic or drop-in doubles or both scheduled for every day of the week for adults. He supplements that with several tournaments, two of them sanctioned, the largest of which draws 140 competitors. “After most of the events we’ll have cocktails or brunch afterwards,” he told me. So he draws widely. On any given day, he says they get “a nice blend of condo owners, guests, and people staying in town.”

Accommodations
The resort consists of clusters of individually owned condominiums, each with a full kitchen and a wood-burning kiva fireplace, and all within an easy walk of the courts. Edelbrock himself manages about 25 of the units, so by renting through him you’re assured of full membership privileges. For more information about lodging, visit Quail Ridge Taos.

Definitely the spot for tennis buffs if you are in Taos New Mexico. Plenty of courts, reasonable court fees, very friendly and helpful staff, and frequent drop-in play. An added bonus was the great pool next to the courts which had morning lap swim which my wife took advantage of while I was playing.

My husband and I took a quick trip to Taos. What a surprise walking into the Quail Ridge Tennis Resort. Kurt and Sid were immediately and completely welcoming and more than happy to get us on the court to hit with their members. They even strung my racquet and made sure I was happy with everything they were doing. They opened their arms and facility with smiles, laughter and warmth, like we had known each other for years. Because of them and their effortless ease, the experience with their facility is one that will never be forgotten. We are looking forward to going back and spending much more time with this funny, well experienced duo. If you are ever in Taos and you love tennis, this is a MUST!!! ????????

A friend and I stopped by the resort on a working vacation to Taos, hoping to play pickleball. Kurt was in the Pro Shop and said sure we could play. He then walked us to the courts and told us of the improvements (resurfacing) he shortly intends to make even though the courts are already quite good. Great experience!

Sid and Kurt were great! I am a 4.5 player from Miami who visited Taos for two weeks and was looking for matches. Sid was able to get me matches almost every day of the week. They also had a ball machine to work on specific shots. The matches were great but the new friends I made even better. I played in a competitive/friendly weekly round-robin doubles group. I would recommend Quail Ridge to anyone looking to work on their tennis game while vacationing in Taos. The setting is stunning with the mountains as a backdrop. The charming village of Arroyo Seco is just up the road and offers great choices for lunch. Many other great restaurants in the vicinity. Outdoor dining in the spring and summer is a specialty. Many music festivals and art museums to round out your stay. And of course the hiking trails are second to none. If you are thinking about combing a relaxing but active vacation with lots of tennis Quail Ridge is the place for you.

This was our first time in Taos and we were looking for somewhere to play tennis and came upon Quail Ridge and I am so grateful we did!! By far the best tennis resort we’ve been to—courts are in great shape and staff are extremely helpful, not to mention the views of the mountains here are amazing! We can’t wait to return and play again soon!
NB
Kurt went above & beyond to make us comfortable and welcome us to the facility. We played five sessions of tennis at this facility. The views from the courts are amazing!

My wife and I have been coming here for the past 30 plus years with never a disappointment. The facilities, atmosphere, and the staff have always surpassed all expectations. The setting, at the foot of the Wheeler Peak wilderness area, gives one a spiritual sense. With many local regularly playing matches are always available and the pros will arrange a competitive match for you. Tournaments are available several times a year. This is simply a fine tennis experience for anyone. PS. Taos Ski Valley is just a few miles up the mountain for you in the winter and transportation is available from the resort.

I am 62 and still very active with a few pains here and there. While tennis was a big part of my life until age 40, I still love to hit and get some exercise. I played college tennis at Duke University and in 1979 played number one doubles and was Captain of the team. I have traveled and played in many places in the USA and what was most appealing about this resort was the fact that there are many activities for all levels of athletic skills. I have recently taken up pickle ball and had the time of my life meeting so many nice people of all levels of the game from beginners to tournament players. I was here from mid July to end of July and the weather was perfect-rained a couple of times but only in late afternoons because the mountain range blocks/difuses the storms. It is so dry you barely perspire but you better drink lots of water because your body just absorbs it like a sponge. Sun is hot and strong because of the 7,000+ altitude but never too hot. Kurt’s tennis instruction and assistant pro’s are polite, fun and knowledgeable so you will get better if you want to put in the effort. One of the highlights of theis resort is it’s location at the foothills of a mountain range which affords very special views and above all no noise from any type of human polution-very little traffic to go anywhere. Never would have thought about finding exceptional food in Taos, New Mexico. There is a great restaurant right on the premises called Common Fire where you can find the sophisticated dishes at reasonable prices and eat on the outdoor patio under shade-so nice! Lots of good tex mex, pizza and casual dinning. Best burgers I have ever had at 5 Star burgers. I am more of a vegetarian but I had to try one-fabulous. Restaurants all have vegetarian options. There is a first class golf club with unbelievable scenic views and very well maintained gold course. I played twice and never had anyone in front of behind me. And there is river rafting, a great spa with mineral water pools (the oldest in the USA) about 45 minutes away. Oh and forgot to mention hiking. There are so many different hikes for all levels. No dangerous animals or treacherous terrain-at least I did not go on any extreme hikes!
MC
If you want good tennis: instruction, drills, lots of games, then this is the place. The weather is reliable so we never got rain in the mornings – minimal in the afternoons. Kurt and his pros are excellent instructors. My game improved so much in the week that I was there. The setting is gorgeous with views of the mountains. You are right next to the city of Taos and there is interesting shopping, sites, galleries, and great restaurants. A trip to Taos ski area is close by too. The pool is a great way to cool off after tennis. The price for accommodation is unbeatable! I will be going every summer!
HP
Excellent value for cost. The head pro Kurt is an excellent instructor, along with his assistant pros they provided daily clinics. They also would set up matches for us. The resort has a restaurant on premises. A pool and hot tub are also there. The resort is a very short drive to the town of Taos which offers numerous restaurants , galleries and shopping. Additionally if you enjoy hiking there are unlimited trails in the area. This was our third stay at Quail Ridge and we plan on future stays. We enjoyed the resort the friendly staff and the Taos community
EG
Our family took a road trip out west this summer. After lots of hiking and exploring we stopped in Taos and my son was itching to play some tennis. I called Sid and he was willing to find someone for him to play a match with on short notice. Sid succeeded and my son had a great time hitting in the high altitude. The facilities are very nice and the staff are friendly. I recommend Quail Ridge to anyone in the Taos area. If we ever make it out that way again we will be stopping in.
RC
This was an amazing setting with great courts and staff. I was very happy with all aspects and returned from Albuquerque 4 days later to spend the remainder of my time in New Mexico. A wonderful getaway and plenty of tennis at all levels. Highly recommend this facility and the beauty of the area. Plan to return soon!! I have taught tennis and managed a pool and tennis club for 28 years. I plan to share my experience at Quail Ridge with all my students, friends and club members. This is the way tennis and nature were meant to blend!!

Needing a break from our long , peripatetic adventure in the American West, Penny and I went online and found Quail Ridge. Our need was lodging and a place to play sparring, exercise tennis. Because of a recent telephone service snafu we were unable to pre-book, so we dropped in at the resort. We were warmly welcomed by Sid and Kurt and arrangements were made for wonderful accommodations with a million plus view and membership to the club. We were on the court in no time that day and Sid and Kurt made us feel at home for the next few days of our visit. We would highly recommend Taos Tennis at Quail Ridge not only for people like us but for those seeking tennis instruction, singles or doubles pairing,or tournament play-all of which we admired during our stay.
DS
After being neglected since 2008, Taos is on the Verge of becoming again a hot spot; thx to the ski resort renovation, generous and maybe thx to well known personalities hanging around.., the winter and the summer activities are now plentiful- Say hello to Kurt, a real gentleman owner of the the Taos Quail tennis club; the town is offering an exceptional environment and climate to relax, eat superb organic local food; nobody is joking with quality of life a d food around here… so if plan to stay in the condos surrounding the court (play non stop) or in ranch near by; unwilling play and then enjoy a long swim in the 25 yards pool in the middle of the tennis courts. The common fire restaurant open all day(!) offer grilled veggies on a center fire w outdoor indoor high or regular mix (meet owner Andy)

When visiting my sister last week I had the great opportunity to participate in two different clinics at Taos Tennis. I was warmly greeted by Sid in the Pro shop and equally well received by Kurt, the head of Taos Tennis who seemed knowledgeable, experienced and like he truly enjoyed teaching tennis to all, regardless of levels. Both pros, Dale and Quinn, were also great and I learned a lot in the short time I spent at Taos Tennis. Overall I left feeling part of a community both by those that run it and the various players who I had never met before. It was friendly but professional and seems to attract employees and players who love the game. I can’t wait to return next time I’m in Taos. ps although I didn’t have food onsight, there is a fantastic restaurant next door, The Common Fire, where I also enjoyed two great meals with a lovely ambiance and good conversation with the owner.
BF
We attended the 2018 Annual Taos Tennis Tournament at Quail Ridge. The staff are extremely helpful and the tournament is well run even during weather situations. You can’t find a better place to stay if you love tennis and a beautiful locale. Kurt will always find you a tennis match and they have drills and mixers going on almost every day of the week. I would recommend this resort to any level tennis players. They also have a wonderful pool and hot tub and now even have a few pickle ball courts for those who enjoy both tennis and pickleball. An A+ resort.
TG
10 well-maintained courts, friendly staff, in a beautiful high desert location. No negatives from this high school tennis coach.
JB
This was my second year to drop by on my way through Taos. Kurt and his staff were fantastic. Was able to join a class and find a tennis player for singles with no trouble. The weather was amazing. Also enjoyed the restaurant. What a friendly place. Next time I will stay even longer!
JF
I had a wonderful time at Quail Ridge Taos . Kurt Edlebroock is a fantastic host and pro. His staff is top notch! Sid, the shop manager kept us laughing, and had each day running smoothly for all of our events. I am looking forward to getting back to Quail Ridge for more great tennis and fun. Thank you Kurt, Sid and the rest of your great staff.
KF
Beautiful setting. Courts in excellent condition. Staff exceptional!
TW
Quail Ridge is a hidden gem!! ……mountain views, blue skies, warm temps – tennis atmosphere you can only dream about. There are ten courts in great condition, and a well stocked shop with tennis apparel, shoes and rackets. Kurt Edelbrock, the club pro, takes pride in making sure his guests are taken care of to the highest standards. A group of us stayed at the Resort with convenient access to the courts, pool/hot tub and a small restaurant. Taos is close by for an afternoon of shopping and great places to eat. We attended the “Elevated Tennis Camp” and had a wonderful weekend of instruction, drills, games and laughs. Planning to make this trip an annual event.
GG
I discovered Taos Tennis at tennis resorts online. This is a beautiful setting with Mountain View’s and well-maintained courts and facilities. Kurt and Sid are genuinely friendly and super accommodating. They welcomed me into the tennis community and set up matches for me with locals and regulars. They even filled in when we were short a player. Tennis instruction with Kurt was outstanding. The overall value was unparalleled. I went for a week and stayed for 3 weeks. I look forward to returning.
JK
Unique. Special. First, the physical description; then the more-important intangible ambience. The club and resort sit in the Taos valley a few miles north of the town on the road to the ski area, surrounded by stately peaks. You sit on the porch of the tennis club after a morning of play and, in the summer, watch the afternoon thunderheads roll in. The owner of the tennis club is the boundlessly energetic Kurt Edelbrock. The Quail Ridge Resort consists of several dozen privately-owned condos adjacent to the courts, and is formally separate from the tennis club. However, Kurt manages many of the units, so there is a close practical connection. The club consists of ten hard courts, a swimming pool and spa, and a pro shop and reception area. It serves both locals and resort guests. Don’t expect five-star elegance. The condos are basic 1970s-style, though serviceable enough. So what is special about this place? In a phrase, the exceptionally-welcoming hospitality. Kurt and his affable associate Sid are tireless in arranging drop-ins and set matches for us temporary “members”. So you can come by yourself and be instantly fitted into the little civilization that Kurt and Sid have created here. Anyone who has jawed or bought his way into standard clubs around the world will recognize how rare this is For anyone who comes for the tennis in a companionable setting, rather than to be seen or to be pampered, this is the place.
RN
Nice, well maintained facility. Lots of opportunity to play tennis or pickleball. The staff was great. Kurt and Cid were very helpful and friendly. We plan to spend a month in the area next year.
TS
After reading about Taos Tennis at tennisresortsonline.com, I booked three days there as part of a one month journey across the USA. That turned out to be a great experience – we could not have been more fortunate in our choice of tennis resort. Me and my girlfriend stayed at a resort apartment, and received terrific service from start to end: We enjoyed free court time and ball machine, inspiring pro tennis instructions, and they even arranged a match for me with a local player on very short notice. Both pro shop and resort staff were great company, very friendly and extremely service minded. Taos, the scenery and climate was even better than expected as well. We had several other good tennis experiences later on our trip across the country, but Taos Tennis was the by far best private tennis resort experience we had. The Value was just incredible – If I knew a place like this in Europe, I would fly in several weeks a year to play
WC
My family and I come here every year and have found the service friendly, accessible and gracious. Our children love the tennis lessons and the expert instructors have instilled in them an enthusiasm and love for the sport. I am very grateful to the Quail Ridge and everyone who is associated with them.
DB
An outstanding setting with excellent courts. If the weather is not accommodating wait an hour and it will be. The staff is continuously accommodating. The rooms at the complex are comfortable, clean and well appointed. We typically go for a tournament the second weekend in July every year and never fail to enjoy this. Kurt runs a tight ship and an efficient tournament. Staying here is not like staying at a hotel but a very comfortable summer camp.
CR
Kurt is friendly and runs a fun tournament. Players from New Mexico, Colorado , and Texas primarily attend. Competition is strong and everyone is friendly. Player party on Saturday is a good time. The resort features condos on site. Courts have been resurfaced within the year.
PS
Great stop. Beautiful setting, incredible views and weather. Great proshop staff. Very friendly and helpful.

Taos Tennis at Quail Ridge is a gem of a small resort about 10 miles north of the tourist destination, Taos, New Mexico. The resort is a mecca for local players and visitors alike. The courts and court side pool are kept in top form, a difficult proposition given the intense Northern New Mexico climate that encompasses a wild range of temperatures and moisture. The setting of Taos Tennis is almost unparalleled. At 7,000 feet elevation, situated on a sage-covered plain, one plays with giant panormaic views of 13,000 foot mountains, the famed Taos Pueblo, and the Rio Grande as it snakes through the the vast Taos Valley plateau. I was in Taos for a month, bought a monthly pass, played some pick up tennis and then more consistent tennis with a friend. You won’t meet friendlier, more helpful staff who know the game and the business. There’s a wonderful restaurant/cafe next door and the club is contained on two sides by attractive condominiums. Taos is a beautiful place to visit and having Taos Tennis at Quail Ridge available is a big, big bonus for visitors who must play wherever they go.
JM
The most breathtaking scenery. Friendly staff and great instructors. The elevation can cause concern and Kurt and his team ensure that the pace meets everyone’s abilities. Truly enjoyed the Shot of the day clinics and for a more customized option, a private lesson. You can’t go wrong. I learned a tonne. Only drawback was there is no night play, but for me this was not a concern.
RE
Great tennis resort; Kurt Edelbrock is a wonderful instructor! Weather is fabulous and the backdrop of the mountains makes it a beautiful setting. Lots of courts and lots of fun people to play with!
EP
Excellent facility and the great staff. Wonderful atmosphere to play. We felt totally at home. Many thanks,
TK
Kurt Edelbrock, the Pro and Owner was a fantastic coach. We got 14 hours of instruction and play in four days and I came out of it a much better tennis player. Staff was extremely helpful and engaging. The courts were in great shape and you can’t beat the background views while playing tennis!
BJ
Kurt Edelbrock (owner & pro) is an excellent coach. Will improve your game. Come ready to work hard. Magnificent New Mexico weather, mountains, sunsets, food.
MH
With 10 courts, spectacular mountain views, wonderful mild summer weather, excellent pricing, and a great teaching staff, I would highly recommend this facility. Head pro Kurt is fantastic and works on all aspects of your game. After his teaching clinics, he always made sure I had guaranteed matches with his other players. The complex is quiet at night but this resort is ideally located about 4 miles from the downtown Taos historic plaza so there are plenty of restaurants and nightlife nearby. Very nice to have rental condos with full kitchens in the tennis complex rather than stay in a regular hotel room.
CJ
Taos Tennis is the friendliest tennis place I’ve been to. Everyone gets along and the quality of the instruction is top notch. Everything is very affordable. It sits under picturesque mountains and has a great restaurant attached. My vote for best tennis place ever.

I have been a member of Taos Tennis at Quail Ridge Taos for over seven years. It is a comfortable, beautiful and amazing club to be a part of. Kurt is one of the most friendly, supportive and generous pros and club owners I have ever known. The setting is spectacular with an amazing view of the mountains. The staff is always ready to respond to your questions and needs. It is amazing that even in the middle of winter Kurt finds a way to keep a few courts open for use on the mild days which we have most every month. Come try Tennis Taos … It is a friendly and family-feel place.
KR
I have enjoyed several tennis tournaments at Taos Tennis at Quail Ridge Taos. Kurt E. and his staff are super friendly, organized, and manage the weekend with the spirit of fun. I particularly enjoy the ease a which they juggle so many details (food, tennis schedule, providing information to so many of us, etc).. I can’t wait to return! Beautiful setting and so close to lots of restaurants for music and food. I also appreciate families join in and many brought their pets! I’ll be back next year for sure.
SS
Enjoy friendly, quality tennis with interesting people. The summer weather is perfect for tennis.

TAOS TENNIS at QUAIL RIDGE, TAOS,NM is absolutely the most fun, most entertaining, ;most enjoyable place my sons and I have ever played. Despite all the charm, amazing landscape nestled near the mountains in Toas, offering incredible views, and as-relaxed-as-you-want-to-make-it atmosphere… you will still find plenty of highly talented competition on the courts, as the local best, Kurt and friends, as well as a draw from many states, bring in high level tennis players! One can also come to very relaxed and less competitive/more fun events as well. Quail Ridge and Pro Kurt Edelbrock offer everything under the sun, A to Z, and you will not find a more fun, kind, thoughtful and most generous host for a tournament on the planet. Truly a one of a kind tennis, resort, mountain, outdoor and life experience. We escape here as often as life allows. Even if you dont play tennis ( I have been injured most of the last 2 years and played only a handful of times) , this is a resort a lot of non-tennis players come to as well for its location (Taos), mountains, mountain recreation, fresh mountain air and Quail Ridge’s on-site amazing host-owner, Don’t let not playing tennis stop you from coming to enjoy this place! Gary, Jack and Ryan Herrmann….and our hybrid Timber!

Taos Tennis is a hidden surprise in northern New Mexico for visitors as well as full- and part-time residents. From May to October, there are many reasonably priced weekly clinics as well as “Drop-In” doubles for men, women and mixed. Small but excellent teaching staff also do private lessons. Staff will also set you up with singles games if desired. Many players fly in for a week’s vacation every year and stay in one of the Quail Ridge condos. Courts remain available in off-season during reasonable weather, with a couple of the courts cleared of snow. In Taos you really can ski in the morning and play tennis in the afternoon on many days. And the resort is conveniently located about halfway between town of Taos and Taos Ski Valley. Several tournaments each summer, including at least one USTA-sanctioned. It’s one of the things that has made owning a second home in Taos worthwhile.
KD
Taos Tennis is a wonderful resort to play tennis, hike, shop, and experience wonderful and unique dining. The views and climate are spectacular. I love o play tennis or take a tennis workout in the mornings, have a wonderful lunch, and then head to the mountains for endless miles of hiking.
MW
We enjoyed it so much last year we had to come back! Taos is a great place and playing tennis in 60-70 degree weather at Quail Ridge sure beats 100+ in the Dallas summer. Kurt runs a great program – good instruction, strategy and arranging players (both locals and visitors) for good match play. We highly recommend this for anyone (or any group/team) looking for a fun tennis getaway. We’ll be back!
AV
I have been going here for the past 12 years and I absolutely LOVE it! Quail Ridge is where I had my very first tennis lesson and I loved it so much I now I play in college. The atmosphere is great with a picture perfect mountain view and the locals are extremely friendly!
CW
We had so much fun with the teaching staff and players, we ended up staying an extra week.
DZ
come options to relax, read, enjoy scenery, and great places to eat. Kurt and team make you feel welcome and goes the extra mile to ensure they exceed your expectations. We have pre booked August of next year.

The pool is a great way to cool off after tennis. The price for accommodation is unbeatable! I will be going every summer!
10 well-maintained courts, friendly staff, in a beautiful high desert location. No negatives from this high school tennis coach.
This was my second year to drop by on my way through Taos. Kurt and his staff were fantastic. Was able to join a class and find a tennis player for singles with no trouble. The weather was amazing. Also enjoyed the restaurant. What a friendly place. Next time I will stay even longer!
Beautiful setting. Courts in excellent condition. Staff exceptional!
Unique.
Nice, well maintained facility. Lots of opportunity to play tennis or pickleball. The staff was great. Kurt and Cid were very helpful and friendly. We plan to spend a month in the area next year.
My family and I come here every year and have found the service friendly, accessible and gracious. Our children love the tennis lessons and the expert instructors have instilled in them an enthusiasm and love for the sport. I am very grateful to the Quail Ridge and everyone who is associated with them.
Kurt is friendly and runs a fun tournament. Players from New Mexico, Colorado , and Texas primarily attend. Competition is strong and everyone is friendly. Player party on Saturday is a good time. The resort features condos on site. Courts have been resurfaced within the year.
Great tennis resort; Kurt Edelbrock is a wonderful instructor! Weather is fabulous and the backdrop of the mountains makes it a beautiful setting. Lots of courts and lots of fun people to play with!
Excellent facility and the great staff. Wonderful atmosphere to play. We felt totally at home. Many thanks,
Kurt Edelbrock, the Pro and Owner was a fantastic coach. We got 14 hours of instruction and play in four days and I came out of it a much better tennis player. Staff was extremely helpful and engaging. The courts were in great shape and you can’t beat the background views while playing tennis!
Kurt Edelbrock (owner & pro) is an excellent coach. Will improve your game. Come ready to work hard. Magnificent New Mexico weather, mountains, sunsets, food.
I have been going here for the past 12 years and I absolutely LOVE it! Quail Ridge is where I had my very first tennis lesson and I loved it so much I now I play in college. The atmosphere is great with a picture perfect mountain view and the locals are extremely friendly!
We had so much fun with the teaching staff and players, we ended up staying an extra week.
come options to relax, read, enjoy scenery, and great places to eat. Kurt and team make you feel welcome and goes the extra mile to ensure they exceed your expectations. We have pre booked August of next year.
Beautiful setting, lots of enthusiasm. Kurt is a gentleman and a knowledgeable pro. Great fun to spend a weekend playing tennis.
