You don’t need to spend more than a few minutes in the modest pro shop or around the courts at Tops’l to begin to sense an almost palpable enthusiasm for the game and its players. Drop in unannounced, and the first question someone is likely to ask is not “Can I help you?” but “Are you looking for a game?” You’re made not simply to feel welcome but wanted, even needed. Without actually stepping on the courts you can sense that tennis matters there, and despite competition from an alluring beach, you find yourself nonetheless being drawn back to the racquet club just to be part of the action and camaraderie.
Depending on your perspective, Tops’l is either a tennis resort with a beach or a beach resort with tennis, but either way there is no competition from golf or any other recreational amenity. That alone underscores the high value the resort puts on tennis. But it’s one thing to offer tennis as an amenity, quite another to ensure that guests take advantage. And the entire staff, from tennis director Joe D’Aleo on down behaves as if the racquet club were not so much a workplace as a second home. Their enthusiasm and personal attention helps make Tops’l a haven for vacationers who themselves want to spend hours on the court.
Tops’l opened in 1985 on 52 beachfront acres adjacent to the Topsail Hill State Preserve. The architectural motif throughout is toned down Mediterranean, with rough cream-colored stucco and red tile rooms. There are numerous one- and two-story condos to either side of the entrance road and around the tennis courts. Most of the development, however, is concentrated along the beach, where several tall towers rise behind the primary dune line. These overlook another stretch of magnificent Gulf Coast beach, all white and high dunes. The newest of those towers has 164 2- and 3-bedroom units with balconies and oversize windows. Between it and beach is very large pool with an expansive deck, private bathhouses, and cabanas, whirlpools, and a small poolside restaurant called the Pavilion for lunch and snacks. All of this is linked by an on-property shuttle.
Although I’d prefer not to look up from the beach and see that cluster of monoliths, I am otherwise a huge fan of Tops’l. Part of its appeal is directly attributable to the genuine enthusiasm of its tennis staff, and part to the resort’s focus on tennis. There is no golf course here to divert attention from what’s happening at the 12-court tennis complex. And in fact because that complex also has an exceptionally well equipped and well staffed fitness center—which includes indoor and outdoor swimming pools—the courts are a more than usually appealing place to hang out.
The tennis complex and clubhouse consists of 12 Rubico courts (a kind of clay), one of them a small stadium, and 10 of them with lights. All have been laid out on a series of terraces each protected from the wind by the surrounding townhouses and pine trees. Recent renovations to the club have included a new Club Tiki bar and restaurant next to the club pools. The interior of the clubhouse also received attention in the form of an updated steam room and sauna. Walkways, grass, and shrubs separate one pair of courts from the next. And each pair of courts has a patio covered by a large blue awning for shade and furnished with chairs and tables and water coolers. The club has some 650 members, about 100 of whom live locally.
Tennis Staff: Joe D’Aleo the Director of Tennis has been on staff at TOPS’L for over 19 years. He has an affable personality and devotion to the game, which ensures a great atmosphere and enthusiasm for tennis and tennis players. A USPTA-certified elite professional who played for Georgia Tech, he brings both teaching and playing skills to the position. “TOPS’L is all about tennis and making sure that all of our tennis guests feel like they are members,” he says of his approach. “We always go the extra mile to make sure all of our guests get all the tennis they need during their stay.” Sharing his enthusiasm and approach is head pro Sam Vickroy and Assistant pro Tyler Marengo.
Tennis Programs: Tops’l has a tennis desk whose staff devotes much of their time to setting up games. During the busy summer, there is also an active weekly calendar of clinics, drill sessions, and round robins, including a Play with the Pro clinic and a very well attended Saturday morning mixed social round robin. That last event draws as many as 40 players and is successful because D’Aleo does not simply throw players together but instead invests time and effort in trying to match everyone according to their level. In the spring and fall, TOPS’L has been very successful in recruiting league teams to come down for long weekends by offering a combination of clinics, round robins and tournaments. These have proven to be very popular. All in all, TOPS’L offers 13 different tennis packages, variously for individuals, groups and teams or they can customize a tennis package to fit your needs.

Beach: Those towers notwithstanding, the resort has been sensitive to the natural environment. The tall dunes along the beach remain intact, and so to reach the broad boulevard of white sand you cross over the dunes on a wooden boardwalk. In spring, scrub magnolias bloom right on the dunes as does purple-flowered Florida rosemary.
Golf Courses: A complimentary 18-hole mini course aside, TOPS’L does not offer on-site golf, though arrangements can be made to play locally.
Spa & Fitness Center: The fitness center at the courts has a large, well-equipped, spaciously laid out, and well-staffed workout room with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the courts. Other facilities include indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a racquetball court. Aerobics, yoga, and water aerobics classes are also available. There is a massage therapist on call at the Racquet Club (there are two massage rooms at the tennis center). Just outside the entrance to the resort is the Blue Heron Spa, an independent operation that offers a more extensive array of services.
A lighted fitness trail (much of it asphalt) with 20 Parcours stations runs from 1¼ miles, from the beach condos around the courts and back.
Children's programs: From Memorial Day to Labor Day, Tops’l operates a camp for children ages 5-12. It consists of a variety of activities, mostly outdoors, and runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday (and includes an afternoon junior tennis clinic). Babysitting services can also be arranged.
Dining: The Ocean Club Restaurant at the entrance to Tops’l provides a convenient place for high-quality evening dining, complete with a live band for entertainment. Curiously, however, there is no place on property for breakfast (though the Sandbar Market & Emporium in the TOPS’L Clubhouse does sell some of what you may need to make breakfast), and only one place for lunch, the Blue Dunes Grill next to the pool on the beach. There is also a small outdoor Tiki Bar poolside.
Accommodations
Lodging ranges from suites and studios to 3-bedroom condos variously located on or near the beach or around the tennis courts. Rates vary seasonally, but differ from those in southern Florida by being highest in summer and over Spring Break, lowest in winter.
Getting there
Seasons: High season here is May to Labor Day, when tourists are more prevalent; however tennis teams and groups of players tend to come during spring and fall.
Travel Instructions: By Air: Although there are regional airports in Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport(VPS), 30 minutes west, Pensacola Regional (PNS), 90 minutes west, the new major gateway is Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP), roughly an hour’s drive to the east in Panama City. We stayed in Tennis Village 12 and it was so nice, clean, efficient, quiet and so cutely decorated! Beds were so comfortable! The villa had everything we needed. Loved the shuttle service that takes you to the beach or anywhere on the resort property! I couldn’t tell you one weakness here. It rained one day so we walked to the Blue Sky Nail Salon and got pedicures and they were the best!

We landed at Tops’l Tennis solely based on location, availability and price. We arrived in Miramar Beach area with no reservations or knowledge of the area. After two nights at the nearby Courtyard we ended up in a tennis condo at Tops’l. The first morning there, the clinic was cancelled due to the low temps, so I scheduled a lesson with Joe for the next day. Please note, I’ve played at facilities all over the country, some of the finest facilities out there. I’ve taken many lessons from top/name professionals, but the lesson from Joe…..best I’ve had in the last 15-20 years. He is quick to evaluate your game and where you need improvement. With me it was ‘tweaks’, fine tuning, minor adjustments, all of which he was very good to point out. There is a lot of activity around the courts. After the lesson Joe introduced me to a ‘local’, who in turn introduced me to others, and I ended up having a terrific tennis experience there. It is an open, friendly place that is welcoming to strangers and wants to make sure you have a good time. The courts are all har-tru, very well maintained and layed out in a very nice manner……..no more than one adjacent/next to another. The layout requires you to walk amongst the courts which increases your interaction with others and the possibility of meeting other players. The courts are surrounded on 3 sides by condo’s and by the clubhouse and pool facility on the other. It is a very appealing, comfortable setting.

We have a group of 12-15 that go every year for the excellent service we get from Joe D’Aleo the head tennis Pro who does a wonderful job of organizing our accommodations and court time. The courts are right out the back door of the condos and always in very good shape, ready for play. Being in San Destin Florida restaurants are very good and easy to get to. Tops’l never fails to deliver! We recently returned to Tops’l for the Helen Drake tournament. Always a fan favorite. Probably our 7th or 8th time playing this event, and it continues to be one of the best in the south, and the nation. High level tennis, great scheduling, smooth running, and accommodating and professional staff. Joe and his staff are available during the entire span of the event. We travel to Tops’l from TN, and it’s worth the 6.5 hour trip, every time. Go for the tournament, and return to enjoy fun round robins, pick up matches or a quick hit with a top pro! We try to get to Tops’l once or twice a season. The clay is spectacular and the beach is gorgeous. The pools at all the properties are fantastic, and so well maintained. This years 35th Helen Drake @ TOPS’L was my first but hopefully not my last. It was a good time. The facility as a whole was/is top notch! The Director of the tournament was very professional, as well as pleasant. Sadly, living on a VERY limited budget, I could never afford to stay on the property while at the tournament. I had to see what the Helen Drake was all about…and I am so glad I did. I truly feel this was the best designated tournament I have been involved in. The only negative was the lack of breakfast and lunch snacks.

Stayed down the street a couple of years ago and wanted to try TOPS’L Beach an Tennis Resort for a change. You get a choice of properties with different benefits to choose from. We choose the Beach Manor with mixed results. Our property did not have tennis privileges so we were not happy. Tops’l has a great facility, not sure excactly how many courts, but they are all nestled between 2 floor apartment buildings, giving a sense of your own private courts. We travel as a group of 8 from Atlanta each year and always get 4 or 5 hours of coaching each year. Although we range from 3.5-4.5 the coaching is done in a way where we all benefit. It’d relaxed but informative and fun. Coaches joe & sam are a couple of fun, yet knowledgable pro’s who can get the extra mile out of us. All in all a great place, with great coaches and we’ll be returning again next year.

Went there w/a group of ladies that I play tennis with in my community. Got there on a Wednesday afternoon just in time to play 2 hours of fun tennis and get in a little exercise after the ride over. I recently played in the Helen Drake Tournament at Topsl. It was a great tournament, very well run. I used to vacation at Topsl once a year, last year I bought a Condo there. The facilities are great and well maintained. 12 Rubico clay courts, 10 lighted. 3 full time tennis pros. There is a private beach on the Gulf, white sand, clear warm water. 5 pools and a big gym. Can’t beat it, and it’s a lot less expensive than South Florida.

I recently attended the 33rd Annual Helen Drake Invitational Tennis Tournament at Tops’L. Extremely well run tournament. The Tournament Director, Joe and his staff did a fantastic job with this tourney. I will absolutely come back to play in this event next year and will be sure to tell others what a great event it is. The facilities were fabulous and the whole staff was extremely friendly.

Tops’l is an amazing place. So much to do. Of course the tennis courts are excellent. But there is so much more. There is a great workout facility. Multiple exercise classes are available–yoga, boot camp, water aerobics and many more. There is a fine dining restaurant on site as well as a tiki hut for casual dining. The staff works very hard to arrange activities for every interest. There were bingo and game nights as well as pot luck dinners for everyone to attend. There is a free tram service that can take guests from condo to tennis and to the beach. There is something at Tops’l for everyone. Highlights are definitely the tennis and those gorgeous white beaches.

Just returning from Santa Rosa Beach and thought I would share my tennis experience. I was able to play at Tops’l It totally lives up to its well deserved reputation as a top flight resort. The courts are in great shape, locker room and amenities are first class and most importantly you are treated like you are the most important guest there. The pro, Sam Vickroy is one of the best pros I have ever met. He has all the skills you look for in a great pro. He is equally versed a s a coach and a player. He has a great way coaching players of all levels. I was on court with him twice and can’t wait to get on court with him again. My teammates and I have driven from Georgia to Tops’l for the past 4 years, passing up other facilities primarily because of the Tennis program and the villa’s in such close proximity to those courts. The tennis instruction is SUPERB!! None better in the country. Joe, Sam are the BEST out there in the tennis world! The villa interiors could use some updating and maybe longer hours for the ‘tram service’ to operate to be able to get around the property after a match concludes at 7pm. The helen drake tourament is most likely the best independent tourament in florida. Scheduling and court time are fair and consistent. Even with the rain delay, play resumed quickly. It is probably the most enjoyable touraments I play in. Everyone shoud put this on their calendar.

Each year, I travel to TOPS’L with a crew of about 39 like-minded tennis and fun enthusiasts to enjoy a long weekend of non-stop play. There’s never a shortage of well-maintained courts for our girls to enjoy. Joe and his awesome tennis staff hold a round robin tourney on Saturday morning complete with prizes for the winners… But the best part is meeting and plaiying with folks from other states. The brand new outdoor Tiki Bar is a wonderful addition, complete with a friendly and accommodating bar crew. The only negative is “lights out” on the courts at 9:00 pm. Guess that’s not a negative for everyone though. 🙂

Much of our time off the court was spent at the new Tiki Bar or the hot tub which are both steps away from the courts. We look forward to September/October every year for our Ladies trip to Tops’l. The resort itself is the perfect size (not too big and not too small) and offers all the amenities anyone could want, including one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. One drawback with the courts was too little clay so the lines were higher than the clay. Bad bounces and also shows would get caught on the line edge periodically. Joe runs a great teaching facility and is always busy with lessons. The tennis villas are great because they are so close to the courts. The beach is not too far away and a shuttle can drive you on property.

The clay courts are immaculate. Despite the rain during our stay, the surfaces dried quickly and did not cause large delays waiting for drying. The professional tennis staff was friendly and went out of their way to accomodate guests and lessons. There is a very well-appointed health club facility in the tennis club which is a nice plus for those rainy days or if you just wanted a steam or sauna experience. There was a wide variety of classes for clients of all ages. The resort also has beautiful white sand beaches for those non-tennis moments!

The tennis instructors know and remember your name after one meeting and greet you thereafter as if you’d been their friend for years. The only concern I would express to friends would be the relative lack of other day long activities should they not wish to play a lot of tennis (it is of course a tennis resort and the Gulf weather during our time there did not favour time on the beach); I also found difficulty in finding hitting partners/ mixed doubles matches during our first days there. Perhaps that is to be expected on a first visit…once we had taken part in a few clinics and met people, that difficulty disappeared (of course, our week was just about up !! Longer stay next year !!)

We stayed in Tennis Village 12 and it was so nice, clean, efficient, quiet and so cutely decorated! Beds were so comfortable! The villa had everything we needed. Loved the shuttle service that takes you to the beach or anywhere on the resort property! I couldn’t tell you one weakness here. It rained one day so we walked to the Blue Sky Nail Salon and got pedicures and they were the best!

We landed at Tops’l Tennis solely based on location, availability and price. We arrived in Miramar Beach area with no reservations or knowledge of the area. After two nights at the nearby Courtyard we ended up in a tennis condo at Tops’l. The first morning there, the clinic was cancelled due to the low temps, so I scheduled a lesson with Joe for the next day. Please note, I’ve played at facilities all over the country, some of the finest facilities out there. I’ve taken many lessons from top/name professionals, but the lesson from Joe…..best I’ve had in the last 15-20 years. He is quick to evaluate your game and where you need improvement. With me it was ‘tweaks’, fine tuning, minor adjustments, all of which he was very good to point out. There is a lot of activity around the courts. After the lesson Joe introduced me to a ‘local’, who in turn introduced me to others, and I ended up having a terrific tennis experience there. It is an open, friendly place that is welcoming to strangers and wants to make sure you have a good time. The courts are all har-tru, very well maintained and layed out in a very nice manner……..no more than one adjacent/next to another. The layout requires you to walk amongst the courts which increases your interaction with others and the possibility of meeting other players. The courts are surrounded on 3 sides by condo’s and by the clubhouse and pool facility on the other. It is a very appealing, comfortable setting.
The worst condo I have ever staying in the 25 years I have been going. Nothing worked. Ice maker broken. The dryer didn’t work. Water leak on floor right when we got there. The place was falling apart.
We have a group of 12-15 that go every year for the excellent service we get from Joe D’Aleo the head tennis Pro who does a wonderful job of organizing our accommodations and court time. The courts are right out the back door of the condos and always in very good shape, ready for play. Being in San Destin Florida restaurants are very good and easy to get to. We will be back for sure with our group next year as our tennis destination!!

We travel to Tops’l from TN, and it’s worth the 6.5 hour trip, every time. Go for the tournament, and return to enjoy fun round robins, pick up matches or a quick hit with a top pro! We try to get to Tops’l once or twice a season. The clay is spectacular and the beach is gorgeous. The pools at all the properties are fantastic, and so well maintained. We travel with our young son, and the kids activities and movie nights are fantastic! You can look hard, but you cannot find a better Tennis/Beach vacation for the entire family, then Tops’l.
I visit Tops’l every year in April for their annual Hellen Drake Tennis Tournament. This is a tournament and a vacation that me and my friends look forward to every year. The quality of of this event starts when you check in, all the way to the tournament directors. I would recommend this resort and tournament for any tennis enthusiasts. I already have booked my room for 2020.
Top notch tennis and workout facility. 14 Har-tru court in very good condition.. Gym has just been upgraded with latest equipment. Indoor/out pool.. hot tub, steam room, massage rooms.. two other outdoor pools…2 tiki huts for food/drink (clubhouse and at beach) Beach a 5 minute walk from clubhouse…. one of the best beaches ANYWHERE…. and I have been all over the world Shopping…restaurants galore in area (Emeril lives in town and has a restaurant near bye..) Ocean Club right outside guard gate is great food ! Let Joe and Sam take care of you….
I attended the Helen Drake Tennis Tournament at Tops’l. As always, the tournament was well organized and the courts were great. We stayed in a tennis villa right beside court 3 and watched some great tennis matches! Always look forward to this tournament!!

I brought a team of 10 players and we had a blast at the beautiful Tops’l resort. Joe D’aleo, tennis director, made sure my team was taking care of. Him and his tennis assistant, Sam, ran fun and competitive drills with my group. The tennis courts were in great shape. The facility was clean and the staff very professional. The villas were a few steps from the courts. The pool, steam room, hot-tub, and tiki bar added a very relaxing touch to our trip. We will definitely come back.

TOPS’L is a tremendous tennis experience. It is a great facility with other great amenities, housing, best beaches in the world, new fitness center and a great staff. The design of the tennis facilities is the best I have seen near the ocean. The courts are protected from the wind and it is a very social place. It is extremely easy to get in a game. There are lots of tennis playing visitors and the best attribute is that the local players are very good in accommodating visitors into their tennis games.

This is wonderful tournament every time I get the opportunity to play. Joe, Scott and the staff run a great tournament. The courts are well kept / watered, the matches are on time and the facility is top notch. Everyone is so friendly / welcoming. You literally feel like you are playing in your own backyard.
This years 35th Helen Drake @ TOPS’L was my first but hopefully not my last. It was a good time. The facility as a whole was/is top notch! The Director of the tournament was very professional, as well as pleasant. Sadly, living on a VERY limited budget, I could never afford to stay on the property while at the tournament. I had to see what the Helen Drake was all about…and I am so glad I did. I truly feel this was the best designated tournament I have been involved in. The only negative was the lack of breakfast and lunch snacks.

Stayed down the street a couple of years ago and wanted to try TOPS’L Beach an Tennis Resort for a change. You get a choice of properties with different benefits to choose from. We choose the Beach Manor with mixed results. Our property did not have tennis privileges so we were not happy. On the bright side, I played the Helen Drake tennis tournament at the onsite tennis club and had a very fine experience. Well run, very organized, great facility, and Director Joe Alero runs a superd event! Just make sure that yor rental has tennis privileges!

A great resort with wonderful tennis facilities. The staff really welcomed our group for our tennis week. The courts were well maintained, the pro shop had a great variety and great sale on their tennis clothes. The meals provided were very good and the accommodations were very handy to the courts. This is the 21st year I have organized our lady’s tennis trip to Tops’l. Joe and his staff are wonderful and very easy to work with. Each year I bring a group of 10 to 14 ladies and we have always had a great time. We can’t wait till next year!!!

Tops’l is an awesome resort! I just returned from my fifth trip there, playing tennis with my 3.0-3.5 ladies crew. The resort is pristine, with beautiful white sand beaches, great pool areas, and a nice gym and spa. We’ve stayed in the rental houses and condos – both are great, very comfortable. Most important, the tennis pros are terrific – and the clay courts are so much fun!
I visited Tops’l on May 4 of this year. It had been 6 years since my last visit and it was just as lovely as I remember. The accommodations were very good, the resort itself was immaculate, from the beautiful landscaped grounds, the fantastic tennis center, pools — a tennis player’s paradise. The beach is fabulous. The tennis (the reason we keep going back) is the best. Joe, Sam and Tyler are professionals and work with us to help improve our game. Everything on the premises, we hardly left the grounds.

Tops’l has a great facility, not sure excactly how many courts, but they are all nestled between 2 floor apartment buildings, giving a sense of your own private courts. We travel as a group of 8 from Atlanta each year and always get 4 or 5 hours of coaching each year. Although we range from 3.5-4.5 the coaching is done in a way where we all benefit. It’d relaxed but informative and fun. Coaches joe & sam are a couple of fun, yet knowledgable pro’s who can get the extra mile out of us. All in all a great place, with great coaches and we’ll be returning again next year.
TOPS’L consistently provides excellent service, accommodations, and experience for tennis trips. Located at the gorgeous beach setting of Destin, there is plenty to do once tennis is over for the day, too. We look forward to going each year.

We are from Louisiana and annually we have traveled with our entire high school tennis team to Tops’l for years. The facilities are great. Courts are right outside your room no matter where you are in the resort. More importantly the Pro’s there are wonderful. Accommodating in everyway. Hands on teaching offered almost all day. And if you want a match they usually can easily get you one. Great Tennis Community.

We recently celebrated the 20th Anniversary of our team attending TOPS’L with our tennis group from Atlanta. For 20 years this group has made a kind of reunion around tennis and have always had a fabulous time. Joe and his team offer professional instruction and the facility is always in topnotch condition. Went there w/a group of ladies that I play tennis with in my community. Got there on a Wednesday afternoon just in time to play 2 hours of fun tennis and get in a little exercise after the ride over. Next two mornings had 2 hours of great drilling from the pros. What a fun girls outing, our condos were right next to each other which made it very convent to enjoy lunch and dinners together. We will be returning back in the fall, as we all loved the time spent there!
We love Topsl! We travel to Destin twice per year and stay at the tennis villa. Sam and Joe are the best pros! We hope to retire there….in about 20 years or so!

I have been visiting Tops’l Beach and Racquet club for 6 Consecutive years for an annual guys tennis trip. Joe and his staff do an excellent job coordinating clinics for a variety of skill levels and provide plenty of court time to practice what we learned. We are planning our annual trip for 2017 and really looking forward to the time at Tops’l.

Our group of 10 to 15 couples have been going to Tops’l for almost 30 years. We all stay in tennis villas and play for at least 4 hours a day thanks to courts being reserved for us in advance. This is a great tennis facility and a wonderful place to socialize (party) with friends. The head pro does a great job of making sure that all of our needs are met. In addition to the tennis there several swimming pools, a fantastic workout facility and the beautiful beaches of Destin. In short, it’s a slice of paradise.

The pros at Tops’l are excellent and each has his own specialties! The facilities and activities are fair priced and varied, even if you don’t play tennis. The Helen Drake Invitational just celebrated its 34th year. For me, it was my first time playing in this extraordinary tournament. Topsl HarTru courts are attractively laid out, exceptionally maintained and very spectator friendly. Joe DAleo and his staff along with a great group of volunteers conducted a truly outstanding tournament in one of the most appealing venues of any tennis facility in the country. Great tennis, enchanting evening ambiance surrounding night matches make this a most enchanting tournament. Great fun!
My husband and I just played the Helen Drake tournament at TOPSL, we’ve been coming for several years, and it just continues to get better every year. The facility is outstanding, the staff is excellent, and Joe D’Aleo is one of our favorite tennis directors and tourney directors. Thanks to Scott for always running a smooth event with few delays.
Clay tennis courts well maintained. Situated so that courts are shielded from strong winds that are common so close to the ocean (Gulf). The amenities fees for use of courts, gym and swimming pools are $45 per day for a couple. Staff does an excellent job of hosting/staging the annual Helen Drake USTA tournament each April. Gorgeous white sand beaches a short walk from tennis facility.
Great value…..helpful staff…..good players available to play singles….biggest weakness is being in a part of the country where a little 5 year boy wears a shirt saying ” suns out …guns out!”

What could be better? We rented a court side townhouse in beautiful Destin FL (incredible beach). Tops’l has a great tennis community and a friendly, talented staff. Not just the tennis pros but the entire staff. Courts are in great shape. Add wonderful restaurants in the area, beautiful drive down 30A and you have a rich, fulfilling vacation experience.
I recently played in the Helen Drake Tournament at Topsl. It was a great tournament, very well run. I used to vacation at Topsl once a year, last year I bought a Condo there. The facilities are great and well maintained. 12 Rubico clay courts, 10 lighted. 3 full time tennis pros. There is a private beach on the Gulf, white sand, clear warm water. 5 pools and a big gym. Can’t beat it, and it’s a lot less expensive than South Florida.
I recently attended the 33rd Annual Helen Drake Invitational Tennis Tournament at Tops’L. Extremely well run tournament. The Tournament Director, Joe and his staff did a fantastic job with this tourney. I will absolutely come back to play in this event next year and will be sure to tell others what a great event it is. The facilities were fabulous and the whole staff was extremely friendly.

Tops’l is an amazing place. So much to do. Of course the tennis courts are excellent. But there is so much more. There is a great workout facility. Multiple exercise classes are available–yoga, boot camp, water aerobics and many more. There is a fine dining restaurant on site as well as a tiki hut for casual dining. The staff works very hard to arrange activities for every interest. There were bingo and game nights as well as pot luck dinners for everyone to attend. There is a free tram service that can take guests from condo to tennis and to the beach. There is something at Tops’l for everyone. Highlights are definitely the tennis and those gorgeous white beaches.

Great place for Vacations
For 19 years my friends and I have been coming to TOPS’L for tennis and we are all looking forward to number 20. The tennis professionals are knowledgeable, encouraging and friendly. I would highly recommend them to any level tennis player who is seeking to improve their game.

Just returning from Santa Rosa Beach and thought I would share my tennis experience. I was able to play at Tops’l It totally lives up to its well deserved reputation as a top flight resort. The courts are in great shape, locker room and amenities are first class and most importantly you are treated like you are the most important guest there. The pro, Sam Vickroy is one of the best pros I have ever met. He has all the skills you look for in a great pro. He is equally versed a s a coach and a player. He has a great way coaching players of all levels. I was on court with him twice and can’t wait to get on court with him again. Our family will be going back to the Emerald Coast and looking forward to more tennis at Tops’l.
My teammates and I have driven from Georgia to Tops’l for the past 4 years, passing up other facilities primarily because of the Tennis program and the villa’s in such close proximity to those courts. The tennis instruction is SUPERB!! None better in the country. Joe, Sam are the BEST out there in the tennis world! The villa interiors could use some updating and maybe longer hours for the ‘tram service’ to operate to be able to get around the property after a match concludes at 7pm. Otherwise, perfect facility, perfect tennis…just perfect!!

The helen drake tourament is most likely the best independent tourament in florida. Scheduling and court time are fair and consistent. Even with the rain delay, play resumed quickly. It is probably the most enjoyable touraments I play in. Everyone shoud put this on their calendar.
I had a great time. My room was beautiful, great view of the gulf. Tennis pros were awesome, super friendly. I can’t believe how much I learned in just a few short days. Can’t wait to come back.

Each year, I travel to TOPS’L with a crew of about 39 like-minded tennis and fun enthusiasts to enjoy a long weekend of non-stop play. There’s never a shortage of well-maintained courts for our girls to enjoy. Joe and his awesome tennis staff hold a round robin tourney on Saturday morning complete with prizes for the winners… But the best part is meeting and plaiying with folks from other states. The brand new outdoor Tiki Bar is a wonderful addition, complete with a friendly and accommodating bar crew. The only negative is “lights out” on the courts at 9:00 pm. Guess that’s not a negative for everyone though. 🙂
Tops’l is a fantastic facility with an excellent tennis staff! Well organized and competent instructors put you through the paces on the courts and challenge you to improve your game. Very good at varying style and instruction for all levels of tennis player, too.
Tops’l Tebnis Resort is an awesome place for your next retreat !! The staff are exceptional with their customer service. I come to tops’l twice a year and always enjoy my stay. I meet new people (from tennis players all over the region to individuals coming for the wonderful beach). Joe and Sam are two wonderful tennis pros who always teach me something new to take back with me to improve my game. The villas are very nice at Tops’l. Sometimes there are things missing like a broom but that is minor. I would encourage anyone and everyone to visit Tops’l !! It’s the perfect getaway that’s close to all the shops and two great beaches!!
A group of 14-17 guys from Atlanta make our annual pilgrimage to Tops’l for several days of relaxation and ton of tennis. We always enjoy the facility (tennis and non-tennis) and especially like our on-court instruction. All of the coaches provide excellent strategy tips and are very personable to boot. A great time is had by all year after year!
What a wonderful experience! We were so pleased with Joe D’Aleo’s instruction and helpful playing hints. He was great to work with. We plan on going back to this resort soon and participate in more lessons with this instructor. This racquet resort is certainly highly recommended by this reviewer.

Great tennis clinics with dynamic, personable, motivating instructors. The facilities are beautifully maintained and programs run on time. Super friendly atmosphere throughout the resort. The Tennis Village Villas are a home away from home. They’re beautifully appointed with all the amenities you’d ever need. You just have to bring your own beach towel as they’re not offered at the pools or the beach.

As a first time experience I was a bit skeptical, almost immediately after meeting and playing with Joe understood that this is the place I hoped it would be. Positive feedback and support was very encouraging. Ok so I’m still not ready for the A team but look forward to going back to Tops’l for another great experience.
Joe does an excellent job of making guests feel welcome. He brings a positive attitude to the game and works well with all levels while providing tips along the way. I am a beginner and Joe was willing to play with me. I felt at ease during the set and got a better understanding of game strategy while having fun playing tennis. The other guests were also very friendly and the facilities are great. I used the steam room and aerobics room to stretch after tennis.

Absolutely loved the Tennis Villa, the Tennis Pros were exceptional. Would recommend to anyone. Only thing that was not a plus was the lack of dining options. There was just one beach bar on the resort, which was closed most of the time since it was out of season.
This was our group’s 13th year at Tops’l, and we have enjoyed every visit there. Joe Daleo, the Director of Tennis, is extremely friendly, helpful, and accommodating. The grounds and courts, like the staff, are very nice, but not at all pretentious.
My group of 32 women go to Tops’l every Fall. We go for great tennis, great fun, and great food! Joe and his staff are always helpful in booking courts, having an impromptu lesson, and, more recently, playing weatherman. 🙂
The Saturday morning mixer is a great way to “mix it up” with others who are staying at the resort for tennis as well. Much of our time off the court was spent at the new Tiki Bar or the hot tub which are both steps away from the courts.
We look forward to September/October every year for our Ladies trip to Tops’l. I would highly recommend this resort to any group, couples, or individuals looking to get away for a vacation with tennis in the mix.
We started with 4 guys and now have 16. We have 2 hours of drills every morning. After we have lunch enjoy time at the beach, pool and health club. In the afternoon we have a round robin. There are plenty Restaurants in the area to go to. Every year it seems to get better. We are already planning our next years trip.
Exceptional tennis instruction. Pros really make you feel welcome. Loved meeting ladies from other parts of the country and some locals. Courts are in great shape, resort is clean and well maintained . There are many options for lodging. Staff goes above and beyond to make sure the guests have a good experience. I go with a group of 8 ladies, but would go there alone or with a smaller group. Very enjoyable!
Courts are immaculate. You can have a match within hours – very accommodating. One pro is phenomenal, others are so-so. Fitness center is a bit dated, but well equipped.
My wife and I come down every April to play in the Helen Drake tennis tournament at Tops’l. Will never miss it! Amazing accommodations and amenities and professional staff. Awesome experience!
The tennis program was terrific! Joe and Sam both bring improvements and strategy to our doubles game. They planned our trip with as much tennis as we could handle 🙂 Will definitely return. Only weakness was with our check in. We received the wrong condo key and on the 4th we had to get new card because they did not work anymore. The checkout was the 5th.
Had a wonderful time, great beach and the tennis instruction was wonderful. Learned a lot while there and got to play a lot of tennis. Its the 3rd camp/clinic I have attended, each at a different location and this was by far the best.
We loved the tennis villas, especially the corner unit where we stayed. We were surrounded by tennis courts and woke up every morning to the sound of tennis balls. Tops’l’s head pro, Joe, was very friendly and helped w/ some excellent tips to help improve our games. We loved the shuttle that picked us up at our until and took us to the beach. The resort’s location on the Emerald Coast was a welcome break change from more southern locations in Florida!
Joe and Sam were personable, approachable and knowledgeable tennis instructors for all levels in our group (2.5 to 4.0). Just the right amount of intensity and fun for everyone. The resort itself is the perfect size (not too big and not too small) and offers all the amenities anyone could want, including one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. Everything is within walking distance, inclduing an off-site shopping area with several restaurants, a Publix, etc. The lodging was excellent. Spacious well-appointed bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, and a full kitchen. A true home away from home — but much nicer than my house!!! And everyone at the resort was friendly, helpful and welcoming, including the front desk, the gatehouse guard, maintenance and maid service.
For the last 20 years, Tops’l remains the friends and family favorite tennis and vacation destination. Tennis and workout facilities are exceptional, staff (particularly Joe) is enthusiastic, knowledgeable and friendly. We keep looking forward to the nest opportunity to go back to the Tops’l Resort.
This is an awesome location. You will have access to food, grocery and really nice restaurants all within 5-10 minutes of the location. Not to mention that it sits just a few minutes from main beaches. The courts play fantastic, the clay is really well maintained.
The staff was very helpful and always available to answer questions. The tennis courts are kept up nicely with getting watered and smoothed out often throughout the day. One drawback with the courts was too little clay so the lines were higher than the clay. Bad bounces and also shows would get caught on the line edge periodically. Joe runs a great teaching facility and is always busy with lessons. The tennis villas are great because they are so close to the courts. The beach is not too far away and a shuttle can drive you on property.
Fabulous resort with great tennis facilities! Highly recommend the Hele Drake tournament and I look forward to playing it again next year.,

It is a great place. The courts are great, and the teaching staff are knowledgeable and fun to work with. The atmosphere is beautiful, with easy access to the courts. There are restaurants of all kinds everywhere, with all kinds of available types of food. I can’t wait to go back! I love it!
the staff, tennis professionals and accomadations were outstanding….we have have been going for the past 17 years…it is a favorite place if you enjoy an active vacation.
TOPS’L is a beautiful place with comfortable condos right by the tennis courts and in walking distance from the beach. We have been going there for 8 years and just love it. We play tennis almost all day and enjoy the sunset on the beach and meet new people that share a similar passion.
We are now missionaries in Africa. When we came to TOPS’L this year we had not played tennis for 2 years because there was no place for us to play in Africa. The pros greeted us with open arms and were so kind. They donated rackets, a net and tennis balls for our orphanage in Africa! Now, that is awesome and we are forever grateful. You will not regret spending your tennis vacation at TOPS’L. You will want to go back over and over again.

We’ve been going to Tops’l for 7 years now. The accommodations are beautiful and the tennis instruction is incredibly helpful. We come with a group of women twice a year and it is never difficult to get a group to commit because we have such a good time. The pros are a lot of fun and the nightlife and restaurants are great.
This was our group’s 12th year at Tops’l. Every one of our trips has been extremely enjoyable. Joe Daleo and his staff are friendly and accommodating. The grounds and courts are very nice, and very well maintained. I highly recommend this resort.

Tops’l combines the best of two worlds–a beautiful beach setting with a great tennis facility. It offers an outstanding tennis experience for players of all levels and for individuals as well as teams. Head pro, Joe D’Aleo, and his staff are knowledgeable instructors and offer clinics that are both challenging and fun.
Employees throughout the facility are friendly, accommodating, and most professional. The tennis villas are attractive, well appointed, and comfortable. The entire facility is very well maintained. This was my third visit to Tops’l, and I highly recommend it!
I thought this was an incredible place. I went there with 7 other girls from my tennis club and we really enjoyed working with the 3 different coaches, Joe, Scott and Byron. We all felt like we learned more on this one weekend and we were able to take what we learned and apply it on the court. We also enjoyed the round robin matches with the girls from Louisiana and felt like they did a good job of matching us up with different people. We also really enjoyed the tennis villas and the pools, spa and of course the beach. I’ve been before and we are planning our next trip already!
The grounds, staff, accommodations, and food are all superb! We were made to feel like long time members even though this was our first (but certainly not last) visit. Tops’l is a great place to be!
2012 was the 4th year my tennis team has weekended at Tops’l, and we have loved everyone. We are getting better each year and love the clinics designed for us by Joe, Sam, and Byron. We are already taking about next year.

Hey tennis lovers, The instructors (Joe, Sam, and Byron) at TOPS’L are exceptional. We are older players and they did not try to change every aspect of our game in a few days. They worked with us where we are in our tennis journey and we really appreciated their help with our doubles game. Can’t wait to go back next year. Thanks to all of you.

I would say the coaches here are THE BEST my team has ever encountered. They pick up on the little things that matter so much in your individual game. I would recommend this resort to any tennis team. The facility is well maintained and the condos are perfect. Definately at 5 star tennis facility..
We were thoroughly delighted with the courtesy, efficiency and friendliness of this Resort. The tennis courts are top class and the people are great. Plus, the tennis was excellent with absolutely no problem in getting great games.

The clay courts are immaculate. Despite the rain during our stay, the surfaces dried quickly and did not cause large delays waiting for drying. The professional tennis staff was friendly and went out of their way to accomodate guests and lessons. There is a very well-appointed health club facility in the tennis club which is a nice plus for those rainy days or if you just wanted a steam or sauna experience. There was a wide variety of classes for clients of all ages. The resort also has beautiful white sand beaches for those non-tennis moments!
My family and I stayed here over spring break and could not have been happier with the resort. It was the perfect combination of close to the beach and a top notch tennis resort. We took several lessons from Joe and he made us feel like there was no one more important to him. I worked with him on getting the right tennis package before we came and was thoroughly impressed with his ability to customize everything we needed down to the actual lessons themselves. While Destin was of course crowded during spring break, the resort felt uncrowded and welcomeing at every turn.
We took a group of 12 ladies down for a girls tennis weekend and we had a great time. We played 9 hours of tennis in 2 days. Joe, Sam and Byron are great in helping us improve our games!
Once again this year, my wife and I enjoyed our vacation at Tops’l. The clinics are instructional and very helpful. We got really good advise on how to improve. The staff makes us feel very welcome and we enjoy the people we meet.
Excellent value for the money. Staff very friendly, conscientious, client oriented. The tennis program is excellent, as is the level of instruction. The tennis instructors know and remember your name after one meeting and greet you thereafter as if you’d been their friend for years.
The only concern I would express to friends would be the relative lack of other day long activities should they not wish to play a lot of tennis (it is of course a tennis resort and the Gulf weather during our time there did not favour time on the beach); I also found difficulty in finding hitting partners/ mixed doubles matches during our first days there. Perhaps that is to be expected on a first visit…once we had taken part in a few clinics and met people, that difficulty disappeared (of course, our week was just about up !! Longer stay next year !!)
Great tennis resort with a cozy feel. We’ve been there twice now and have already booked a 3rd trip with friends. Definitely the best value out there with a friendly staff getting you to play tennis rather than trying to maximize profits. This resort is for tennis court junkies who just want to play and hit balls. There’s something to do for everyone whether they play tennis or not in the surrounding community.
director of tennis, joe d’aleo, runs a great tennis experience! interstate team challenges are held both spring and fall….even senior events!…..to the delight of 3.0 – 4.5 level players. it’s awesome! check it out. wonderful tennis, beautiful condos, and amazing ocean…quite a package.

Tops’l Beach and Racquet Resort is one of the most consistent places to vacation. Year after year you can count on the quality of the Courts and service by the facility.
Just completed our 11th annual trip to Tops’l. Had over 40 people, and all had a wonderful time. Joe Daleo (head pro) is a great instructor and a fantastic host. Very nice courts; can choose beachfront or courtside condos; lots to do in the area; highly recommend Teps’l.

I cant say enough good things about the tennis staff and accomodations at TOPS’L. We actually chose TOPS’L for our 15 year anniversary!!! Within a month of leaving, we returned for more tennis and great instruction. What a great place–we are currently planning another trip for October 2011.
