One of the nation’s longest-running camps, Total Tennis originally launched in 1978 at the Williston-Northampton School in Massachusetts before moving to a year-round location in Saugerties, New York in 1997. Set on 73 wooded acres, just over 100 miles from New York City, this 25-court facility is at once a tranquil retreat and a magnet for avid tennis players drawn by the five-hour-a-day programs, sumptuous meals prepared by a CIA-trained chef focused on local ingredients, and convivial atmosphere.
A rustic main lodge anchors the property. Check-in formalities take place there just off a large great room with a fireplace, baby grand piano, lots of sofas and chairs, and a bar open late afternoons. There’s also a modest pro shop, a game room and library, a TV room, and an expansive dining room furnished with large picnic tables, the better to encourage making new friends over dinner. Tennis art decorates the public spaces and rooms.
Those rooms, 43 in all, are scattered through the lodge and six cabins, and until recently these accommodations were, let’s call them, “basic.” Renovations in 2018, however, upgraded roughly three-quarters of the rooms, fitting them out with new furnishings, hardwood floors, and redone baths (the remaining quarter, now classified as “retro”, rent for less). About the same time, a new swimming pool and deck was constructed between “The Barn” (more about that later) and the five indoor courts, the latter with a cushioned surface and bright LED lighting. WiFi is now available throughout the rooms and public spaces, one more amenity to go along with the hot tub, day spa, fitness center, game room (in The Barn), and outdoor tennis, pickleball, and paddle tennis courts. And though you might not expect it, the property is beautifully landscaped, with towering trees and beds of flowers and shrubs.
Total Tennis founder Ed Fondiller is using those enhancements as a springboard to launch the 73-acre property as a resort, calling it Kaatsbaan Lodge. “The idea is to lure people up to take a lesson or clinic, or hit on an open court, and then go hiking, biking, or rafting,” he told me. “Although we’re still a committed tennis camp, we’re no longer talking about just tennis. They can stay here, take advantage of the amenities and meals, and then use it as a base to explore the Hudson Valley and historic towns like Saugerties and Woodstock. We are really looking for ways to maximize the potential of this place, particularly in the summer.”
My experience with Total Tennis originally dates to its days at Williston-Northampton School. If the five-hour-a-day program persists from that era, the clientele now sport more arm sleeves and knee and ankle braces. On my last visit to Saugerties, I heard several campers, drawing presumably on past experience, already thinking ahead to how tired and sore they expected to be in a few days and scrambling to book time with the massage therapist. Five hours a day is demanding even on the red clay and artificial clay where much of the teaching takes place. Fondiller still strives to keep a student:pro ratio at 4:1. That assures more personal attention but at the same time ratchets up the number of balls you’ll hit in the course of the day. Such in the nature of his tennis-hungry clientele, however, that I saw four women who no sooner arrived than they donned tennis clothes and headed to the courts—never mind the rigorous schedule that lay ahead of them the next day. And although I wasn’t around to see it, my guess is they also took part in the optional round robin that takes place on Mondays and Saturdays—that’s after having put in five hours on court.
The tennis aside, Total Tennis has also always been about the camaraderie. Group dinners help foster it. So do the swimming pool and hot tub. On weekends, when crowds are larger, there’s often a DJ and dance music in the barn. That said, there’s not much that goes on there at night. Maybe catch some TV in the barn (there are no TVs or radios in the rooms); more likely, catch up and reading and, now that there’s good WiFi, social media.
Tennis Programs. Fondiller adopts a simple approach to his camp: “I try to keep it laid back and relaxed,” he told me. “I want to keep tennis in perspective. If you’re not out there having fun, you shouldn’t be playing.” He himself makes a a point to be on hand at the start of every weekend and midweek camp, introducing the program and helping to sort campers into compatible groups and pairing them with an instructor (campers generally work with the same pro throughout their stay). But the daily instruction—and ½-hour private lessons that are part of every package—he now leaves to his stable of experienced pros, headed by Saif Syed and Devarshi “Bubla” Mitra, who have been with him for 15 and 20 years respectively. All of them take their cue from Fondiller and keep the atmosphere light. Despite its 5-plus-hour-a-day format, this is not a boot camp.
Talk to any of the camp regulars, and the comment you hear over and over again is that they like the people who attend. The recidivism rate is high, so people frequently run into campers they’d met on previous visits. It is not unusual for 75 or more people to show up for a weekend camp.
Weekenders are almost exclusively adults, but midweek during the summer Total Tennis also offers options for juniors ages 6 to 17. When kids and parents come together, the juniors can take part in a summer camp that bundles tennis in the morning with other activities in the afternoon leaving parents free to indulge their passion for tennis without having to worry about their children.
Court Complex: There are 25 courts altogether: 11 red clay, 12 hard (5 of them indoors), and two artificial clay.
Caveat: Any program that puts you with the same pro throughout the week risks the occasional personality conflict. If you’re not happy, my advice is to ask to be switched, even if that means having to join a group of players above or below your level.
Off Court
Golf Courses: Although there is no golf course at the camp, there is one 18-hole course just up the road.
Spa & Fitness Center: A day spa, with six treatment rooms, makes a variety of massages available to campers and other guests. There is also a modest fitness center in a long, narrow room in the building that houses the indoor courts It has several pieces of Cardio equipment as well as multisport stations.
The camp has a recreational swimming pool open during the summer and fall, as well as a year-round hot tub.
Accommodations
Getting there
Seasons: Year-round, however the outdoor season runs from mid May to mid October. During the winter most people come for weekends or long weekends.
Travel Instructions: By Air: The nearest major airport is Albany, 47 miles to the north. By Car: Total Tennis is three miles from Exit 20 off the New York State Thruway. That puts it roughly 100 miles north of New York City. By Bus: Several bus lines connect New York City with Saugerties. You can phone from the drop-off point and someone from Total Tennis will pick you up. By Rail: The nearest Amtrak station is Rhinecliff, New York.
Total Tennis is the best tennis camp I’ve ever attended — including some in Hilton Head. The pros and facilities are great, and the fact that it’s all-inclusive makes it more relaxing than a camp where you have to figure out your own accommodations and meals. And the food is delicious.
PF
Great atmosphere, great food, great time.
KG
My husband and I had a great weekend and really improved our Game. We went with 3 couples and enjoyed the facility Will definitely be back

Total Tennis’ recent refresh of their rooms has transformed their camp from a great place to have fun learning and playing tennis, to a comfortable, attractive great place to have fun learning and playing tennis. Basically, I would **now** bring my GF/wife. The staff is great, the food is excellent, facilities are very good – hot tub is delightful. You will enjoy your stay.
JM
We went to Total Tennis for a weekend. I had heard that the food was delicious but the accommodations were spartan, so I was a bit skeptical. Our room was basic, but clean and modern – nothing rustic or old about it! If you love tennis, this is the place for you. Groups are well divided by ability (my husband was moved out of his group twice to get a better level fit) and there is a good balance between drills, instruction and games. You can play 8 hours a day if you wish and the day flies by. You need to have good weather as the indoor facilities are somewhat limited, though there are plenty of outdoor courts. Meals were very good. There is not a lot to do in the evening – there’s a big “dirty dancing” style building with a pool table, but no bar. Highly recommend for a tennis getaway!
JD
Great food! Should have more than one instructor for beginners, been here more than once as a beginner and it’s the same instructor.
AF
This tennis resort is great. I enjoyed my stay, the instructors and tennis play was excellent, the food was very good, the ambiance great. I had my racquet restrung there too and it was one of the best stringings I have ever had —and it was done quickly. If I have one lessor then perfect comment it is that if you go on a rainy weekend the number of inside courts is limited and therefore your instructive tennis time is too. Otherwise I totally recommend Total Tennis!
DB
Excellent for a weekend getaway or longer. If you’re there just for the tennis, the instructors are first class and really care about improving your game. I’ve found that they can quickly identify key errors and find ways to fix them. What’s more, when I return, it feels like instructors already know my game and will build from there. It’s really very impressive. The facilities themselves are very good. 20 courts outdoors, and a well-managed system to ensure you get the same amount of tennis even if it rains (they have a bunch of indoor courts). But, if you want your weekend to be more than just about tennis, it’s just a lovely place to be. The grounds are very scenic, and the newly renovated rooms are great. The food that Chef Dan prepares is all from locally grown veggies and meats, and it’s excellent. Ellen at the front desk is simply the best person (as well as Chand, Megan…), and she makes sure you feel happy during your stay. There is a hot tub, a swimming pool, golf nearby… We always have a good time when we go, both on the court and off it (they do a nice happy hour on weekend nights, and it’s very sociable) This site asks for “strengths and weaknesses”, so I feel compelled to comply, though it’s hard to find a weakness. So… I will point to the coffee. I often run out in the morning to get my group coffee from Starbucks. But coffee is kind of disproportionately important to me.
GH
Awesome tennis on great courts in a beautiful lush valley. The quality of the tennis is obviously the most important reason to come here, but whenever I’m booking a weekend I’m also thinking about how great and healthy the food is as much as I am about being on the courts, as well the pro’s and other players I’ll be meeting. This place is always a good time and I leave feeling great. Total Tennis is not a fancy resort, I’ve been to some of those, but always enjoy it here much better.
LV
Great food, good instruction, comfortable and laid back. Bar and fireplace very inviting
LS
Really fun weekend. The food is surprisingly decent for a cafeteria setting. Pros are solid and competent. If you’re a high level player (above 4.5), you’ll want to bring friends of an equal level with you, as you’d be placed in a group with lower players (4.0) otherwise (since there are rarely 4.5+ players attending).
RK
I love the food, the tennis, the instructors and the faviloity. NO COMPLAINTS HERE!!

My family has been going to Total Tennis for over a decade. WE all love it there. The instruction is fantastic, the facilities are top notch and the food is both healthy and delicious. WE always meet nice people there and it is our favorite place to enjoy mini-vacations. We have told so many people about Total Tennis and everyone has loved it.
FM
Total Tennis is my annual destination for great instruction, amazing food, and new friends! I started going to Total Tennis when I moved to NYC from Florida. There, there were courts everywhere but in NYC, courts and court time are hard to come by. Now, every single Memorial Day Weekend, it’s a girls trip. We love hitting with Lydia and all the guys… Can’t wait to go back!
ML
Love everything about Total Tennis. Especially the selection aid food. We return every Columbus Day weekend and my group grows every year.
DD
Great weekend getaway. Great food, great lodge, great hosts, great tennis! Very reasonable and a beautiful location. We’ve been many many times. It’s our favorite place to go!
AB
Love this place. The only problem is that even though I play hours of tennis each day, the food is so good that I end up gaining weight,,!!!
DD
Friendly and attentive staff. Excellent food. And lots and lots of great tennis and instruction. You can be sure of two things:1) you’ll be sore when you’re done and2) you’ll be a better tennis player.
RL
Wonderful facility. The courts are first rate. The rooms have all been renovated and the food is out of this world. All of the pros are great. The location can’t be beat – in the Catskills mountains. You will get lots of time to play tennis – for fun or to improve your game. You will also have time to explore the mountains, enjoy the spa, pool and jacuzzi or just relax.
TG
I believe the quality of the camp is awesome, great to get concentrated lessons. I like the upgraded rooms in the photo you sent. thanks, will make it nice next time we go.
AB
Great way to hone your skills and have a good time doing it. Facilities were first rate and after a long day of lessons there was plenty of fun recreating to be done in the game rooms. Also a very friendly and social environment, conducive to conversation and meeting new people.

I live close to Total Tennis and go there regularly for lessons. On occasion, I have attended tennis “camp” for individual days. I have never stayed in any of the guest rooms, so I have no opinion about that. I can tell you that the food served at lunch and dinner is GREAT. Not gourmet, but fresh and delicious. Of course, that’s not what you go to tennis camp for. The instructors are great. I am familiar with all of them and they know their stuff. I have visited 3 other tennis camps and I can tell you that, of those I have visited, Total Tennis has terrific instructors!
KF
Total Tennis is what its name same says, Total Tennis. I went with friends for the tennis camp. The first impression, it was a Rustic retreat with lots of tennis courts. Rooms were clean with a great view, but minimally furnished, but had everything we needed. Camp has its own solar panel farm to power, so being “Green” was really nice. Food was fantastic. I was on a diet when went to the camp and had plenty to choose from and everything I had was great. Many of the veggies are locally grown on site so were picked that day. The Tennis instruction was great. Students were divided to groups based on what rating they thought they were. Then groups warmed up and coaches gave quick evaluations to make sure students were in correct groups. I was in the 4.0+ group. We had two pros (one a current college player on summer break) for six students. The small group gave us lots of personal attention and the chance to fine tune our skills in customized group program, instead of a generic program that makes us work on skills that we have already mastered. When I got back home, my tennis friends noticed immediate I was playing at a full level higher than when I left. A great thing to achieve in a three day camp. My Friends and I are spread out across the country and we enjoyed the camp so much we plan to make it an annual trip.
PL
Strength. Commraderie with staff and players, amount of hitting . Weakness. It’s a camp not a hotel
AS
I have been here twice. My basis of comparison is the other camps at Amherst (3 times), Lawrenceville (NJ) and Swarthmore I have attended. My first time at TT was not so great because the group was not at my level (4.0) and the instructors were so so at best. This year, however, I had a great time in a group of eight with two excellent Brazilian instructors. The food is great, the rooms are improved but still not great, socially it is great and the tennis can be excellent if you get lucky with your group and instructors. Amherst is a tougher camp physically and they run a doubles round robin in the evenings for those who have something left in the tank. That activity is lacking at TT. I went with a friend of comparable tennis level this year, which was a good idea because I knew I had at least one person at my level. I went midweek in June. Weekends might be better to ensure a good matchup of people at the 4.0 level. Amherst is a more sure bet for a challenging tennis experience, but is less social.
AM
Love it, go every year with 12 guys from my team. Boobala and Tye are the best. They both diagnose and fix your problem in no time at all. Added bonus is that the food is unbelievable. If I was injured I would still go to eat the food!
WA
Great food and fun!
SZ
Beautiful resort in a bucolic town. The lodge was very homey and comfortable. All the guests hung out in the lodge. We all played board games. It was a lot of fun. The tennis was terrific. The food was excellent. The accommodations were very comfortable. It was really fun. I would definitely go back.

My daughter and I last went to Total Tennis the summer of 2013. We were there for the three day midweek session in July, arriving on a Sunday for dinner and leaving Wednesday after lunch. We had a morning session as well as an afternoon session each day. My daughter and I are strong, experienced recreational players (Joi is a 4.5 and I’m a strong 4.0 super senior.) Our instructor was a strong player who was able to individualize the instruction for the varied levels in our group. I picked up a couple of pointers that I was not aware I was neglecting. Namely, bend my legs more when I serve. The food was excellent too. One cannot fault the staff for the extremely hot weather during this time. We hydrated and used the pool after the morning session and after the afternoon session. We chose to stay outside for the PM session on the clay courts, rather than go indoors on the hard courts. One thing that I really appreciated was that Total Tennis had my $400 deposit from 2012. Unfortunately, I injured my knee and needed meniscus surgery in 2012. They allowed me to use that deposit and apply it for the 2013 session without any loss of my deposit. That’s tops in my book. Joi and her Dad had a good time, and I’m sure we’ll be back. I also had a fine massage there too.
CR
The instruction was great, the food excellent. The owner’s attitude was not so great. He put my husband and myself in a group with beginners and the pros are not allowed to move you. He refused to speak to me after dinner. I get the feeling he doesn’t really care if you come back, that you are “expendable”
AA
Good instructions. Close to ny and NJ. Very goodfood. Swiming and hot souna are great after skiing. Wonderful mini vacation.
JC
I have received compliments from several people I referred to Total Tennis after my visit. They found it as excellent as we did. My wife is a beginner and had a great experience with her instruction program and fellow learners. Ed Fondelier has created a really solid teaching program. We had tried two other programs earlier the same year, and they really do not hold a candle to Total Tennis, for my game. I play winter league senior doubles and had very specific goals: improve consistency overall; improve topspin speed, add topspin return stroke to high balls. Not too much to ask for 3.5 days, right? Guess what? TT nailed all three goals plus added a new put away stroke for me. I played number one te entire following season, had a great season. I want to go to TT every year. If I cannot, at least I will confidently recommend my friends go.

My weekend at Total Tennis was my first tennis camp experience. I felt that I was matched up with a nice variety of players in my group. The best thing I came away with from Total Tennis was a very important change to my game that I learned during the private instruction session. The food was awesome…wholesome and delicious. The down side was that it rained the whole weekend and there were not enough indoor courts to maintain a small group size; our group was about 6-8 people. The courts were not well-ventilated and given the heat and humidity, that made it pretty rough.
MD
Spent a weekend there in the Spring of 2012. Unfortunately, we had rain on one of the days and the staff did their best to make the experience a positive one. We didn’t get as much tennis in as I would have liked, but I feel like I did take away some helpful suggestions. This was my second visit to Total and I again found the pros to be helpful, enthusiastic and professional. The setting is fantastic and the food has really improved from an already pretty strong place. Many of the vegetables are grown on site and they work with many local producers to ensure freshness. The evening has a fine wine and cheese social and a dance party in the barn. A great time, particularly if you’re with a group of people.
PD
Love this place as it’s all about tennis and good food. Like the rustic camp atmosphere where you really bond with other camp participants. Also, it’s great that you can room with your child while they attend the junior program. The pros and the instruction are excellent as well and they do a good job of matching player levels in the groups.
SA
Great instruction, but a lot of hours in a short time.
AC
I’ve gone to Total Tennis several times and have always had a great experience there. The coaches are excellent–enthusiastic and knowledgeable. It’s a very friendly and relaxed place, with lots of returning guests, but very warm towards newcomers. The lodging is far from luxurious, but it’s comfortable, clean and cozy. The food is surprisingly good. A great value and enjoyable time overall for people who are focused on playing lots of tennis.
NR
The tennis was excellent. Both of my pros were great. My only gripe is with the accomodations. I knew about the very basic rooms beforehand, so can’t complain too much. I went there for the tennis and had a great time. I went with my 12 yr old daughter who also thoroughly enjoyed herself. I would definitely go again. And by the way, the food was also pretty good.
LH
Great price, wonderful food, nice facillities. Owner is not friendly, awkward personality. Teaching staff very nice, good teachers, good program. Avoid owner—
JW
This is our third time at Total Tennis. Dollar for dollar, you can’t find a better value in the Northeast for the combination of tennis instruction, food and lodging. The instruction is very solid with the same pros that have been there the previous two times. The pros remembered me from my previous times which was a nice touch. Food is very good with the chef offering plenty of variety for everyone’s taste. Lodging is very very basic with no TV’s or phones in the room, which really wasn’t a big deal since you aren’t in the room much anyway. This encouraged group activity in the main lodge around the fire. They also have a bar open in the evenings in the main lodge and massages available in the afternoon after tennis. While I didn’t do a massage this time, it was very good from my previous visit. All in all, a great tennis camp that’s really a gem for us in NYC.
RP
This is my 2nd time going here in 1 year and my friend’s 3rd time. It seems most people are repeat visitors or new people come with friends who have been here before. On both w/e’s I went, they were completely filled (80 people max this time) so that says a lot for this place. Ellen, the manager, runs the front desk is always very friendly and efficient. Ed is the Owner / Director and there are 20 pros. There is an indoor hot tub, large outdoor pool, big indoor tennis facility used when it rains and in colder months, massages available, and the food is delicious. The views are gorgeous – 20 outdoor courts with mountains behind. There is a hill to get to the courts and the program is somewhat intense (lots of drills, games, instruction, play). Rooms: The earlier you book, the better the room you can request. All are very basic, no-frills,no TV, no phone, some smaller than others, but all clean. You are not in the room for much time, only to sleep and change. 1. Cherry Hill – $25 more a night. Newer bathrooms (with bathtub), full size beds, ¾ wall divider and a nice view. 2. Main Lodge 3. Cabins – Nice, quiet, had separate heat, a porch, a bathtub. 4. Barn – Most (or all?) on the 2nd floor. DJ plays music Sat night so then it is noisy. Our room had a shower (no bathtub) and rooms smaller here than the cabin. Dress: On Friday and Sat night mostly everyone wears jeans. In October, the mornings were very chilly so we dressed in layers. Sunglasses and/or hats a must at times as it was very sunny on the courts. Pros: Observing different pros, some critique more than others. We called beforehand to request specific pros each time (based on friend’s recommendations) and our requests were granted. All the guests seemed satisfied with their pros. Drinks: Upon check-in you get a Total Tennis cup with a lid to use on the courts. I brought my own insulated bottle so the ice wouldn’t melt quickly (as it did last time I was there) and also easier to distinguish my bottle from everyone’s cup. There is Gatorade and water on the courts. I would always stop in the kitchen before going to the courts to fill my bottle with ice and cranberry juice. And for those who want alcohol, there is a bar in the main lodge and also in the barn Sat night. Some people bring their own alcohol but Ed reminds everyone to drink it in their rooms. Food and Program Food is delicious, organic, plentiful, and healthy. Friday dinner 7:30 PM – salad bar, roasted chicken, pasta stuffed with cheese, veggie dishes, strawberry shortcake Saturday breakfast 7:45 – 8:30 – French toast, bacon, eggs, cereals, banana nut muffins, fruit 8:45 – meet at the courts. Ed describes each level (beginner, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, etc). He then calls out the levels and unless you came with your own group, you are put into a group of 4. We were initially with 2 guys who came together but after a short while the pro asked if the guys would mind if they split up because clearly one belonged in a 3.5 group rather than our 3.0. Ed, then brought over a women who thought she was a 3.5 but didn’t belong there and the guy went to her group – a smart move for all concerned. Mini-tennis and drills in the morning. Each person gets 1/2 hour private lesson for the w/e and your group decides who goes when(Sat 11:45, 3:15, 3:45 or Sunday at 11:45). If you take the 3:45 on Sat you can’t do the round robin play. Sat lunch 12:00 – salad bar, pastrami and swiss on bread, tuna, veggies, choc chip cookies, fruit, 1:15 – demo by the pros, then back into your group. 4:00 – 5:00 optional doubles round robin play You start with a partner and play against 2 others for 15 minutes. If you win you stay on the court, if you loose you move down a court and switch partners. You do this 4x. Sat 6:30 – 7:30 – wine and cheese party Sat dinner 7:30 – salad bar, sirloin slices, mashed potatoes, swordfish with mango sauce, great pasta with porcini mushroom sauce, veggies, ice cream sundaes, etc. Sat 9-11 dancing in the barn with Goldie the DJ – bar, dancing, ping pong, pool, foosball Sunday breakfast 7:45 – 8:30 – pancakes, eggs, cereals, fruit, banana nut muffins 8:45 – meet at the bleachers . If you played on clay one day, you are then assigned to play on hard or grass surface courts. Sun lunch 12-1:00 – meatloaf, tomato and mozzarella on bread, tuna, spag. squash, pasta, kale and other veggies, oreo brownies 1:15 demo by the pros More emphasis on games and playing this afternoon. 3:15 your week-end at Total Tennis ends…..don’t forget to tip the PROS ! Note: There were 6 people who came up Thursday. For an extra $100 you get an extra night, 3 meals, and some tennis instruction Thursday and Friday – something we will consider in the future.

It is great that they also have indoor courts in case it rains. Ed is a wonderful person and you can certainly feel his love for tennis. I have been going there since they first opened in Saugerties. The food is fantastic. The rooms are clean and I do enjoy the cabin atmosphere. Their cat Tiger looks forward to my vists as we have become friends, and I always bring him food. Ellen at the front desk is so helpful and makes you feel welcome. I think Tye, Tony & Bugala are fantastic pros and the make Total Tennis special.
SB
I’ve been to Total Tennis 3 times now, twice in the outdoor season and once for an indoor session. Each time has been a different experience, but the quality of instruction, great people (both staff and ‘campers’) and really tasty food has been consistent. It’s not a luxury resort…but the rooms are clean and functional, and after all, you’re there for the tennis. They do have on-site massages, and I highly recommend ending your day with one. Ellen (runs the desk and I think manages the place) is great, very helpful, friendly and nice. I highly recommend Chase for a pro, and have heard great things about Vic, Lidia and just about everyone there. Alan the bartender is great, takes great care of the guests. And in the outdoor season, DJ Goldie makes for a really fun scene in the barn. The crowd is varied, but I’ve found the people there to be very friendly and fun for the most part. Ages range from 20’s to 60’s, and a pretty balanced mix of men to women. Lots of groups of friends, but if you come alone, you’ll have no problems making friends and finding people to hang out with. I would have no issues going by myself. You get a little more play time in the outdoor season, and it is admittedly less than ideal if there’s rain and you have to move indoors. But they’ve got it down pat in terms of split sessions in the morning and afternoon, and it works out just fine for the most part. I’m an intermediate player and have gone with total beginners — we all feel like we learned/improved while there, had a great time and would go back again and again. It’s a great deal – lots of tennis, high quality food (surprisingly so!) a pretty setting relatively close to NYC. Can’t wait to go back!!
HK
Once you are in a group, that will be your instructor and fellow tennis players so be sure you have a good level and rapport with your instructor (strong enough? Rigorous enough?) and ask to move if it does not meet your needs or expectations. FOOD is excellent here, Very good Pros, lovely clay courts and mountain rural setting in the Catskills. Accommodations are clean but think “summer camp” rustic. Excellent hot tub and quality of spa services, and service to meet the needs of guests, are commendable and homey. You may feel shorted on the total number of hours you receive on the court (compared to advertised schedule) which seems well within their means to correct. Due to work schedules I ended up with three different pros. 1 was “excellent” 1 was “very good” and the third was too slow paced and I was not learning anything new…I moved out of that group. this is a great place to go if you want to travel solo, and plenty of married and single tennis players do so…meals are friendly and folks sit together.
KM
Instruction was good and as my group changed so did the focus. Great rustic setting for a fall tennis get away. The foliage was a great back drop. Rain you go indoors, otherwise outside. Food was a big plus, with the talented Chief. Better with a group or a friend but everyone is friendly. Big weakness is they advertise five hours a day and a 1/2 hour private per stay; most days are really only four to max four and a half hours. Not much going on in the evenings during the week. Overall a good value.
BW
Just back from a weekend at Total Tennis that reinforces my opinion that this has to be the best tennis camp around if you are flying solo. Communal on-site dining makes for instant friends. Level of instruction is superb and the food from Chef Dan (Culinary Inst alum) is firstrate. Yes, the accommodations are “rustic” but what’s wrong with that in the foothills of the Catskills! I go at least once a season, albeit this weekend was hot, hot, hot. (need salt pills) Ellen and Theresa at the front desk supplant lack of “creature comforts” with great efficiency and good humor. And the “rustic” swimming pool was finally warm enough to swim in.
JS
Beautiful setting and great food. I looked forward to the meals every day. Tennis instruction was just average…would have preferred to have pros rotate through the courts. The rooms are basic and the facilities and courts show a lot of wear.
DA
For better or worse the best thing about Total Tennis was the food, which was wonderful. The tennis was okay. Loved the facilities – – beautiful setting and great courts but the instruction and drilling was only adequate. That being said, I would return simply because the value was tremendous.
NA
Set in the Catskills Mountains, Total Tennis offers a beautiful setting for fairly good tennis instruction. The facility caters more to beginning to intermediate level players; more limited use for advance players. The rooms are no frill rustic accommodations (no tvs in the rooms) but the food is mostly locally produced and excellent. Overall, it is worth going to for a few days of play.

The best (and only) east coast indoor tennis camp, excluding Florida. It’s all about tennis & fantastic food. Lodging is very basic but clean. The pros were very good. 4 hours of instruction each day and 1/2 hour private lesson included for the weekend. Great value for your dollar. Try to go with your own group of 4 if possible. Every meal including breakfast was prepared fresh & was delicious. Highly recommend this place for a winter getaway.

Total Tennis is the best tennis camp I’ve ever attended — including some in Hilton Head. The pros and facilities are great, and the fact that it’s all-inclusive makes it more relaxing than a camp where you have to figure out your own accommodations and meals. And the food is delicious.
Great atmosphere, great food, great time.
Great food! Should have more than one instructor for beginners, been here more than once as a beginner and it’s the same instructor.
Great food, good instruction, comfortable and laid back. Bar and fireplace very inviting
Love everything about Total Tennis. Especially the selection aid food. We return every Columbus Day weekend and my group grows every year.
Great weekend getaway. Great food, great lodge, great hosts, great tennis! Very reasonable and a beautiful location. We’ve been many many times. It’s our favorite place to go!
Love this place. The only problem is that even though I play hours of tennis each day, the food is so good that I end up gaining weight,,!!!
Friendly and attentive staff. Excellent food. And lots and lots of great tennis and instruction. You can be sure of two things:1) you’ll be sore when you’re done and2) you’ll be a better tennis player.
I believe the quality of the camp is awesome, great to get concentrated lessons. I like the upgraded rooms in the photo you sent. thanks, will make it nice next time we go.
Strength. Commraderie with staff and players, amount of hitting . Weakness. It’s a camp not a hotel
Love it, go every year with 12 guys from my team. Boobala and Tye are the best. They both diagnose and fix your problem in no time at all. Added bonus is that the food is unbelievable. If I was injured I would still go to eat the food!
Great food and fun!
The instruction was great, the food excellent. The owner’s attitude was not so great. He put my husband and myself in a group with beginners and the pros are not allowed to move you. He refused to speak to me after dinner. I get the feeling he doesn’t really care if you come back, that you are “expendable”
Good instructions. Close to ny and NJ. Very goodfood. Swiming and hot souna are great after skiing. Wonderful mini vacation.
Love this place as it’s all about tennis and good food. Like the rustic camp atmosphere where you really bond with other camp participants. Also, it’s great that you can room with your child while they attend the junior program. The pros and the instruction are excellent as well and they do a good job of matching player levels in the groups.
Great instruction, but a lot of hours in a short time.
Great price, wonderful food, nice facillities. Owner is not friendly, awkward personality. Teaching staff very nice, good teachers, good program. Avoid owner—
Friday dinner 7:30 PM – salad bar, roasted chicken, pasta stuffed with cheese, veggie dishes, strawberry shortcake Saturday breakfast 7:45 – 8:30 – French toast, bacon, eggs, cereals, banana nut muffins, fruit
8:45 – meet at the courts.
Beautiful setting and great food. I looked forward to the meals every day. Tennis instruction was just average…would have preferred to have pros rotate through the courts. The rooms are basic and the facilities and courts show a lot of wear.
For better or worse the best thing about Total Tennis was the food, which was wonderful. The tennis was okay. Loved the facilities – – beautiful setting and great courts but the instruction and drilling was only adequate. That being said, I would return simply because the value was tremendous.
