This is not a “center” but a “campus,” an aptly evocative word to describe what the U.S. Tennis Association has carved out of the pasteurlands at Lake Nona, an easy 15-minute drive southeast of Orlando International Airport. One hundred lighted tennis courts fan out across the 65-acre property, anchored by a building housing , among other things, USTA offices. The courts cluster in neighborhoods—Collegiate, Family, Team USA, Tournament and League, Player Development—each with lockers, showers, shade, and relevant amenities. Six are indoor, six are European red clay imported from Italy, the rest a mix of hard, clay, and Rebound Ace. Two—one clay, one hard—are configured as 500-seat stadiums. Fully 84 of these courts have Playsight technology to live stream on-court action, so that college alumni can login to watch their teams compete, grandma and grandpa can see how their children are doing in junior matches, and your friends can follow you progress if you’re playing in one of the sectional or senior events that rotate through the new campus. Of those, 32 have Playsight’s SmartCourt technology to record and analyze matches. And scattered throughout are phone and tablet charging stations and 25 hydration stations, or water-bottle fillers, delivering filtered water. There’s a pro shop managed by Fromuth with a “Racquet Bar” where you can not only get your racquet restrung but also consult with experts about customizing it to meet your needs. Finally, if you get hungry, food is as close as the Netpost Grill in the welcome center.
A number of top American players have visited the campus to train, among them Madison Keys, Frances Tiafoe, Reilly Opelka, and CiCi Bellis, but the USTA’s aspiration obviously went far beyond creating a world-class professional training facility. Coaches with top juniors are encouraged to bring their players to the campus for short-term stints—it is emphatically not a residential academy—to take advantage of the expertise within player development. The sprawling camp hosts 100s of tennis tournaments each year, most of them junior, senior, NTRP, league, and state and local championships. There is also a series of drop-in clinics, with themes like live-ball doubles, Cardio tennis, Innovation tennis, Tennis 101, Tennis 102, and Novice tennis as well a wheelchair and veterans programs. The campus schedules open social play sessions (mostly doubles, though with some singles sessions) as well as special holiday social round robins. On top of that there are summer camps for juniors and 3-day National Campus Adult Camps on selected dates. Or put together a group of 8 or more and design your own camp, staff by campus pros. Oh, and by the way, private lessons and open court time are offered as well.
As an avid tennis player, you owe it to yourself to visit the campus whether or not you’re taking a camp or enrolled in one of its many tournaments. It’s an easy detour from the airport before continuing on your way to Orlando’s theme parks or one of its more traditional tennis resorts.

They take tennis incredibly seriously, but also incorporate fun into the mix so it makes you want to push yourself even further. Proximity to airport is a blessing and a curse.

This is by far the best facility in Florida, if not the U.S. Before moving here, I visited dozens of public and private tennis places all over Florida and it was an easy decision to move here to the Lake Nona area of Orlando, close to the USTA National Campus. They have great daily programs for kids, adults and even hard core training for college players and future pros. My husband and I have visited the USTA National Campus twice for adult tennis camp and instruction. During our second visit we took all of our adult children who play tennis at various levels with us. The facilities are amazing. The adult camp is well-organized, flexes to multiple levels of play, and provides the strategic component of doubles that goes way beyond stroke instruction. While we had two coaches who stayed with our group of 8 for the whole three days, other instructors are rotated in for specific aspects of the camp like kinesthetics or the mental game or partner communication. Every day there is also private instruction time as well as play time built in. The complex offers pickleball play and instruction and we tried out Padel, which was really fun. Also there was a collegiate tournament, regional USTA tournament, and professional Pickleball tournament going on all at the same time which was festive and exciting. It is amazing to watch high level players. The pro shop has a wide variety of men and women’s clothes. A new outfit and new shoes are a must each trip. The racquet shop is amazing and so quick about getting new strings put on. They also have a lot of demo racquets. The Lake Nona area offers a variety of hotels at various price levels. There is also a huge variety of food options from quick to fancy available. I cannot wait to go back!!!!!! I cannot imagine a better place to improve my game and have a lot of fun.

I am an intermediate player. I have taken many classes, such as private, semi-private, group lessons, and team lessons. Each session was highly effective in improving my skills. The coaches are excellent. Their time management and advice for each private or group lesson are outstanding.
The transitions and explanations between topics are well planned, allowing me to enjoy every moment. I can confidently say that my skills have improved, and I always make a note of what I have learned.
The coaches provide valuable advice, and I find it necessary to write it down.

One of the things that stands out to me is that every camp has a plan, playbook, and theme. Through the camp all of the instructors reference back to that theme for each segment. This reinforcement learning helps the lessons stick with you long after the camp!

I have attended the Intermountain Camp at the USTA National Tennis Center for the past 4 years. It is truly a magical experience that has elevated my game in so many ways. The instructors are excellent, the facilities top notch, and the atmosphere is super fun. I look forward to my annual trip to Orlando to grow and have fun at the game I love.
