Twenty-four people showed up for a social round-robin on a Monday morning during my last visit to Waterville Valley Resort. The fee was $2/person for members and Waterville pass-holders to cover the cost of balls. Pairings were done by handing out playing cards: as a red 3 I played with another red 3 against the two black threes, and before the morning ended I’d played with or against most of the other players, most of whom seemed to be locals or second home owners.
Terraced into a grassy hillside and surrounded by forested mountains, Waterville’s 18 red-clay courts rank, among the most beautiful places I’ve played. The resort encourages guests to take advantage of the tennis and many other outdoor activities by offering a special “Summer Unlimited” package through several of the lodges and condominiums. The pass that comes with it affords everyone in the room complimentary access to everything from tennis and golf to bike rentals, athletic club facilities, watersports on the pond, the chairlift to the top of the mountain (where there are hiking and mountain biking trails), and even ice skating. With so much recreation available, it’s comforting not to have to think about cost each time you take up an activity.
The resort itself huddles in the valley. At its core stands a Town Square, a collection of shops and restaurants set beside a pond that spills over a rocky flume into a creek. Inns, lodges, and condo complexes fan out around it.
Not many resorts can trace their enthusiasm for tennis back more than a century. Waterville Valley still has the red-clay court that first lured players to this part of New Hampshire’s White Mountains as long ago as 1884. Now a sunken stadium with grassy berms, it has been in continuous use ever since. What has changed over the last century is the size of its complex: now there are 18 red-clay courts and another two synthetic grass indoors at the nearby Athletic Club. Tennis remains, after more than 110 years, a reason to visit. Tennis director Tom Gross, Jr., who trained with Rod Laver, Roy Emerson, and Lew Hoad among other legends, owns the tennis complex and the Athletic Club and runs it with an eye to satisfying the families of avid players who vacation there during New Hampshire’s glorious summers and fall.
Tennis Staff: Born in New England, Gross showed considerable talent as a child, winning his first tournament at age 6 and then going on to play for New England College while majoring in creative writing and history. But his love of teaching tennis determined his direction. “I made a commitment at 14, 15 years old to teach,” he remembers. “While friends of mine were playing the New England juniors, I was teaching.” During the tennis boom, he first taught for Laver-Emerson Tennis Holidays and then became its national director when Emerson left. He still employs much of their methodology in his teaching and clinics. He tends to focus on such things as preparation, contact, and follow-through r”ather than on the intricate details of technique. His first question for anyone taking a lesson is often “what’s your playing schedule?” That answer determines his approach to teaching. “If someone plays only once a week, then you have to be careful to take what they have an make them better,” Gross notes. “If they have time to practice, then you can be a little more creative.” Above all strives to keep it fun.
Tennis Programs: Each morning during the summer the tennis center schedules 90-minute clinics for adults and juniors. Those are followed by well-attended adult round robins, which take place daily, and by another for juniors, which takes place three times a week. Game matching tends to be rather more perfunctory: there is a “Looking for a Game” board and when pressed the staff may try to help but tends to rely more on natural selection of the clinics and round robins to bring guests together. There is some kind of tournament almost every summer weekend. The pro shop, a tiny timber structure with a deck overlooking the courts, has all the services you’re likely to need. For details about the programs, see Waterville Tennis.
Court fees: No charge for those on “Summer Unlimited” packages; otherwise, $50/hour for singles, $50 for 90 minutes of doubles.
Waterville Valley Resort is also home to New England Tennis Holidays at Waterville, which offers 2-to-5-day tennis camps from Memorial Day to Columbus Day.
Off Court
Golf Courses: The resort has a 9-hole golf course, which winds around the valley floor; however guests also have privileges at the public Owl’s Nest Golf Course in Thornton, roughly a dozen miles away. Designed by Cornish, Silva & Mungeam, Inc., this 6,818-yard, par 72 championship course follows the natural topography of the Pemigewasset River and the White Mountain National Forest. It has five sets of tees on each hole, bentgrass fairways and manicured greens, which makes it accessible to golfers of any skill level.
Spa & Fitness Center: The Athletic Club has swimming pools, whirlpools, saunas, steam rooms, an indoor jogging track, and a selection of weights and cardiovascular equipment. Massages are also available.
Kayaks, pedal boats, and canoes are available for use on Corcoran’s Pond, there are mountain bike trails and a mountain-bike park, an ice-skating rink, hiking trails to the summits of the valley’s 4,000-foot peaks, and a gymnasium for basketball and indoor floor hockey.
Children's programs: Waterville runs a summer recreation camp for children ages 4 to 16. Activities vary by age, including some specifically for teens. The resort also operates a free valley-wide shuttle bus to make getting around easy.
Dining: There are half a dozen places to eat in Waterville, from delis and pizzerias to seafood and steaks in the Wild Coyote Grill at the Athletic Club
Accommodations
Rooms in Waterville Valley range from simple accommodations for 2 in a country inn to 3-bedroom condos capable of sleeping 6.
Getting there
Seasons: The outdoor tennis season runs from June through October, though play is possible indoors year-round.
Travel Instructions: The nearest airport is Manchester, NH, 70 miles to the south. Other options are: Boston, 130 miles; Montreal, 225 miles; and New York, 325 miles.
As a Swiss girl, I found the Waterville Valley Tennis Center incredibly welcoming.
The people are genuinely kind and highly talented, which greatly helped me improve.
I made significant progress in a short amount of time, thanks to Tom Gross, who is truly an outstanding teacher.
He made everything clear and easy to apply.
I honestly regret not living there, as I would definitely take lessons every day.
Overall, this was an amazing experience, and I look forward to returning and taking more lessons.

Tennis Instruction 11/10
Location 10/10
Fun factor 10/10
Firstly should start by saying Tom is a truly outstanding instructor.
The main idea of our stay was to get coaching for our 8 year old son (“Jaimo”). He had some good shots but had issues with the forehand and we hadn’t made much progress with the serve. Tom totally transformed both shots in 3 sessions as well as significant improvement on his volley. And he made it so much fun! I don’t think my son has ever enjoyed coaching that much.
My wife (complete beginner) and myself (previously played a lot but rusty) also did the adult clinics and we both achieved quite frankly amazing results. Tom’s clinics were just masterful – he is really able to get everyone improving at the same time and his sense of humor and fun are very infectious. Tom clearly has a lot of experience playing and teaching at the elite level and he is able to take those nuggets and communicate them effectively to all player levels. He is also the best feeder of the tennis ball I have ever seen.
In conclusion can’t recommend WV tennis enough and we’ll hopefully be back soon.

Waterville Valley Tennis Center is a wonderful tennis facility with great pros and staff.
My wife and kids and I, spent a family week at Waterville Valley and we all signed up for tennis clinics ; I ended up in a couple private lessons too. I have been playing tennis for 40 years and figured I had nothing to learn but TOM brought me back to and beyond my peak form.
He fixed my serve, forehand and greatly improved my volleys in a couple hours.
His instruction is amazing, fun and inspiring. The facility and views are fantastic and dreamy. We can’t wait to go back.
The Athletic Center and pools are awesome and having indoor courts was perfect for a couple rainy days.
We actually went home to Connecticut and a few weeks later I ended up winning our local summer Open Men’s Double tennis tournament !!! Thank you Tom !!!

Can I give this resort 10 stars? Tom is a tennis genius. I started the summer at a pretty basic level and improved tremendously thanks to Tom’s smart clinics. My forehand, backhand and volley all got so much better. Plus, I saw all my fellow students improve in just 1-3 clinics. He gives thoughtful, tailored advice that helps each player improve, no matter the level they come in on, instead of the robotic, generic tips I’ve gotten elsewhere. He’s able to convey everything from form to strategy in an accessible, fun way. I’m almost reluctant to go to any other coaches this fall. Plus, the clay courts are really nicely maintained. Highly recommend!

Enjoyed my time at Waterville Valley Tennis. Spent 3 days playing tennis and taking daily clinics. Tom’s clinics were excellent. He provided constructive instruction in a kind and gentle way. Looking forward to going back and staying longer.
IS
Excellent instructions, friendly staff, great clay courts!!
BN
Beautiful red clay courts surrounded by mountains. Just had a clinic with Tom and it was excellent. Tom picked up little things we were doing wrong and works with us to improve them. The lesson is enjoyable and the time is well spent.
JS
My husband and I took a couple of clinics with Tom and he was excellent. He was able to identify and correct our technique and he made the sessions fun and exciting! Highly recommended!!

Great experience on the tennis court. Tom, the instructor, was very helpful and really helped my game.

Most amazing views at any tennis court anywhere!
JK
The tennis at Waterville Valley is fantastic, thanks to the exceptional instruction and enthusiasm of Tom Gross, Jr. Tom is a phenomenal coach. He’s positive, insightful and is able to break things down to achieve results quickly. We stayed for a week and wish we could have stayed longer. We certainly would love to come back. Tom gave fantastic coaching advice on our serves, among other things. His clinics are small – 4 people max – because he actually evaluates what everyone needs to work on and then works on it. The clinics aren’t just a lot of ball hitting as so many clinics are at other places – it’s individualized instruction too. Call well in advance to sign up because with that number of spots, the clinics can fill up. The courts are beautiful – red clay, very well maintained. There are two indoor carpet courts at the Waterville fitness center for the days it rains. In short, we highly recommend Waterville Valley tennis and can’t thank Tom enough for the experience.
VC
Beautiful views! Great coaching!
Tom can analyze and improve one’s stroke in a session. I definitely became a better player after only a couple of clinics. I also loved to see that he can make it a great learning experience even when different level players sign up for the class. I strongly recommend coming to the clinics.
MM
Phenomenal instruction and coaching! One lesson with Tom is like 10
elsewhere. Our kids loved it.

The pros are incredibly talented and offered feedback that I hadn’t received from any other pros in my time playing tennis, which was incredibly helpful! The video analysis was very helpful. In addition, I found myself saying “I love this drill” to every single one we did. Duncan and his team are high energy, funny, and truly committed. The views are picturesque with the beautiful white mountains surrounding you. The only downside, honestly, to the outdoor courts was that the bathroom facilities is a porta potty. Highly recommended and I know I will plan to be back!
JH
An excellent program. Great instructors. Fun and educational in a beautiful setting

We had such a great time! Thanks Duncan and staff!

The highly experienced staff provides topnotch, expert instruction with friendly, personalized attention tailored to each individual, all delivered in a relaxed, fun context. Your skills and game will definitely improve regardless of your existing level of expertise.

Great family, get away, and Tom Gross, who runs the tennis program, is the best! One lesson with Tom is like a month of practice and instruction anywhere else.
JP
Highly recommended. Lots of detailed instruction and feedback on my individual strengths and weaknesses. They videotaped some aspects and then went over the videos with us individually which was a huge help. I came away with a few good pointers to work on. It was also a lot of fun; I didn’t want it to end! Will definitely be back next year if possible.

I love this place, have been coming back year after year since I was a kid. Tommy G taught me all I know about tennis.

Thumbs up. Great instruction, fun atmosphere. Highly recommended.
FR
What a great weekend we had with Duncan and JJ in stunningly beautiful Waterville Valley. Their instructional approach hits the right balance in finding a few take home points for further attention, without sacrificing fun on the court. Nor do they overload players with a long list of what to do differently, which I find can inhibit actual learning. It’s the next step that they focus on, something achievable in the near term. The on-court instruction was nicely enhanced by worthwhile video sessions, better than most I’ve experienced in the past. Overall, New England Tennis Holidays is highly recommended, and I doubt anyone will be disappointed.

loved Tom Gross!

Tom’s tennis lessons are phenomenal. The view is spectacular.

Tom Gross gives outstanding tennis instruction, as invested in improving my game as I am
DC
This is my second year at Waterville Valley with Tom. He is a fantastic pro and sees deeply and clearly into your game with expert analysis. Really improved my backhand and serve.
MJ
The tennis pro Tom was exceptionally patient with me as I played for the first time. He thoroughly explained the necessary techniques in a very low pressure and fun way. I learned a ton in 90 minutes and can’t wait to go back for another clinic!!!
LG
Tennis lessons with Tom were exceptional. The style of coaching and methods used to motivate and teach were phenomenal. Also, there were ample tennis courts available and all very well maintained.
JS
Duncan and his staff were excellent; gregarious, knowledgable, enthusiastic and encouraging – all the qualities one would hope for in a tennis coach. The drills were well thought out and executed, balancing work and fun. Duncan, Eric, Rob, Duncan and JJ all used different methods but they meshed well and they were able to accommodate a myriad of levels amongst the participants. The setting was superlative. Red clay foreground and majestic green mountains for a background. Duncan was available at odd hours and went the extra mile, accommodating me and my wife’s lodging questions. He even had excellent dining recommendations. My only regret is that our stay wasn’t longer.
BF
Fantastic Coaches!! They want to.make sure you take home the things you learned! Great variety of drills and games!! 4th coming here!

Tom Gross is a great instructor.

Our group had a great experience and learned a lot about our strengths and weaknesses. Being videotaped was very helpful with an expert pro highlighting what we were good at and what we needed to work. Nice group of pros and participants with a great up beat attitude. We are looking forward to going again next year!
KK
Thoughtfully organized program, experienced coaches, good ratio coaches per campers. Sticking to time, providing video analysis and customizing the experience as much as possible so that every participant could get away with something specific to work on. Fun, entertaining, great value for cost. Great location, good food (lunch) options and overall great atmosphere. Can’t point weaknesses as have not been to other camps yet so nothing to compare to.
JH
Amazing tennis weekend! Gorgeous location, great coaching staff & programming and a really nice and friendly group of attendees. Coach to player ratio was wonderful and video swing analysis was also very helpful. Great value for the money and looking forward to returning!
MS
This was the perfect tennis camp/holiday we were looking for. The instruction was excellent and very personable. The location was beautiful. This accommodations are clean, convenient and fine. They are not high end, but you come to this program for the excellent tennis which renders any quibbles with the accommodations moot. We loved it and plan to return again and again and again……
IS
The Team at Waterville Valley was fantastic! Tom Gross Jr., the head pro, rebuilt my game in just 9 days in a way that I will forever be grateful! I have never worked with anyone who has so much tennis skill themselves and is also a superbly gifted teacher.
LG
I’ve been participating in Tom’s clinics for years and appreciate the passion, consistency and patience he brings to tennis instruction. He is able to seamlessly run clinics with a wide variety of skill levels so both the novice and expert players get their money’s worth. It’s hard to imagine a more picturesque venue in which to play…you are surrounded by gorgeous views of the White Mountains. It’s worth noting that the clay courts are fastidiously maintained; they are watered as needed to reduce dust and groomed as needed every morning and later in the day as needed as well. Pickleball is not an option at these courts.
TG
Picking up tennis as an adult, I joined a local tennis club and take clinics and private lessons. Here in Waterville Valley on vacation I decided to check out the tennis scene. To start with the courts are gorgeous–the red clay makes you feel like you’re playing at Roland-Garros except you’re surrounded by beautiful mountains. This setting has got to be tough to beat, plus in the summer, the weather in NH is perfect for any outdoor sport. I took a clinic and private lesson with Head Pro, Tom Gross. Tom is fun, engaging, and clearly a master tennis coach. He really cleaned up my game and is the only coach I’ve had who has given pointers on my serve that allow for consistency and confidence. I’ll be visiting him for a lesson whenever I’m in the Valley. Played in a Social Round Robin today and it was a friendly, welcoming and super fun scene. Met a lot of great players and was able to arrange for future matches. So overall, gorgeous courts and setting, expert instruction, and robust social playing scene. If tennis is not your thing there are countless other outdoor activities in the area and a picturesque town square with frequent live music and events and quaint shops and restaurants. Waterville Valley has it all.
NS
We love Waterville valley!! It’s beautiful, everyone is friendly, and there is tons to do for adults and kids
JL
We love going to Waterville Valley Resort! The main draw to this resort are the clay tennis courts. They are kept in excellent condition and are always available to play on. Tom Gross and his clinics are informative and easy to follow-he really does build upon what a player has. The Round Robin socials are a great way to meet other players and enjoy playing matches. The fitness center and pool offer additional fun and relaxation. This resort has all you need for a vacation with incredible views!!
BC
Tom Gross runs an outstanding set of programs at the Waterville Valley Tennis Center. The clay courts are pristine and the scenery is breathtaking. Tom is a superb instructor able to move individuals to another level in one or two sessions. He can see the exact problem and he demonstrates the solution so effectively, all with humor and fun along the way. My husband and I both experienced significant results after just 3 group clinics – amazing!
GS
Tom Gross is an incredible teacher. I hadn’t played tennis since prepandemic, and I’ve never gotten much beyond advanced beginner though I love the sport. After one lesson with Tom, my forehand had improved considerably. After 3 clinics, I was serving consistently and my forehand, backhand and volleys were so much better. In a doubles match, I hit 4 winners at the net I would never have gotten before that. He’s a thinking person’s instructor, which fits my learning style — giving tips tailored to your game to make the most of it. Highly recommend!
BG
I was just here for a tennis clinic. I was not staying at the resort. Just fulfilling my tennis needs while at another location about 20 miles away. Best lesson I had all year. I was corrected in this one lesson without asking to be corrected. Tom knew exactly what was needed to correct my stroke. Once he simplified it for me showing me visually what needed to be done, I was able to apply it and correct my stroke for both forehand and backhand. Now I’m more consistent on placing the ball where I want it to go. A big Thanks to Tom. All strengths here, no weaknesses.
AL
We love Waterville Valley tennis! Courts are in the most beautiful setting with views of the mountain and fresh air. Clinics are predictable and it’s a great place to learn how to play. Round robins welcome visitors and locals. A great place to live, regularly vacation and visit!
AL
We love New England Tennis Holiday! Duncan and his team of pros are very knowledgeable and fun! Days are well planed, with just enough predictable structure and variety. Videotaping and providing feedback on a shot of the day is their specialty. Ratio of pros to campers is always excellent. Highly recommend!
MM
My husband and I have attended many tennis camps and both agree that Duncan’s instruction is by far the best we have experienced. His friendly, upbeat attitude, patience, and the variety of drills and games offered made the five hours of daily tennis fly by. Plus, the setting is truly beautiful — we plan on returning!
PN
I had a great experience participating in a tennis camp in June 23. The tennis courts have a fabulous view of the mountains. Playing on clay courts with greenery and mountains on all sides is a spectacular experience. The tennis lessons are well organized. Many activities are available outside tennis. Overall a great experience.
KW
My first time attending a 3-day clinic at NETH and the camp surpassed my expectations. Each morning focussed on a particular technique and was reinforced throughout the day and with afternoon point play. The biggest takeaway for me was the video analysis of the key strokes and I learned a lot about how to improve my play. The session was full with other tennis enthusiasts and the level of play was very competitive. Duncan, JJ and Nick all worked well together, providing individual corrections where needed while keeping the sessions light and fun. I look forward to returning in the future.

We love Waterville valley!! It’s beautiful, everyone is friendly, and there is tons to do for adults and kids
We love Waterville Valley tennis! Courts are in the most beautiful setting with views of the mountain and fresh air. Clinics are predictable and it’s a great place to learn how to play. Round robins welcome visitors and locals. A great place to live, regularly vacation and visit!
