Twenty-four people showed up for a social round-robin on a Monday morning during my last visit to Waterville Valley Resort. The fee was $2/person for members and Waterville pass-holders to cover the cost of balls. Pairings were done by handing out playing cards: as a red 3 I played with another red 3 against the two black threes, and before the morning ended I’d played with or against most of the other players, most of whom seemed to be locals or second home owners.
Terraced into a grassy hillside and surrounded by forested mountains, Waterville’s 18 red-clay courts rank, among the most beautiful places I’ve played. The resort encourages guests to take advantage of the tennis and many other outdoor activities by offering a special “Summer Unlimited” package through several of the lodges and condominiums. The pass that comes with it affords everyone in the room complimentary access to everything from tennis and golf to bike rentals, athletic club facilities, watersports on the pond, the chairlift to the top of the mountain (where there are hiking and mountain biking trails), and even ice skating. With so much recreation available, it’s comforting not to have to think about cost each time you take up an activity.
The resort itself huddles in the valley. At its core stands a Town Square, a collection of shops and restaurants set beside a pond that spills over a rocky flume into a creek. Inns, lodges, and condo complexes fan out around it.
Not many resorts can trace their enthusiasm for tennis back more than a century. Waterville Valley still has the red-clay court that first lured players to this part of New Hampshire’s White Mountains as long ago as 1884. Now a sunken stadium with grassy berms, it has been in continuous use ever since. What has changed over the last century is the size of its complex: now there are 18 red-clay courts and another two synthetic grass indoors at the nearby Athletic Club. Tennis remains, after more than 110 years, a reason to visit. Tennis director Tom Gross, Jr., who trained with Rod Laver, Roy Emerson, and Lew Hoad among other legends, owns the tennis complex and the Athletic Club and runs it with an eye to satisfying the families of avid players who vacation there during New Hampshire’s glorious summers and fall.
Tennis Staff: Born in New England, Gross showed considerable talent as a child, winning his first tournament at age 6 and then going on to play for New England College while majoring in creative writing and history. But his love of teaching tennis determined his direction. “I made a commitment at 14, 15 years old to teach,” he remembers. “While friends of mine were playing the New England juniors, I was teaching.” During the tennis boom, he first taught for Laver-Emerson Tennis Holidays and then became its national director when Emerson left. He still employs much of their methodology in his teaching and clinics. He tends to focus on such things as preparation, contact, and follow-through r”ather than on the intricate details of technique. His first question for anyone taking a lesson is often “what’s your playing schedule?” That answer determines his approach to teaching. “If someone plays only once a week, then you have to be careful to take what they have an make them better,” Gross notes. “If they have time to practice, then you can be a little more creative.” Above all strives to keep it fun.
Tennis Programs: Each morning during the summer the tennis center schedules 90-minute clinics for adults and juniors. Those are followed by well-attended adult round robins, which take place daily, and by another for juniors, which takes place three times a week. Game matching tends to be rather more perfunctory: there is a “Looking for a Game” board and when pressed the staff may try to help but tends to rely more on natural selection of the clinics and round robins to bring guests together. There is some kind of tournament almost every summer weekend. The pro shop, a tiny timber structure with a deck overlooking the courts, has all the services you’re likely to need. For details about the programs, see Waterville Tennis.
Court fees: No charge for those on “Summer Unlimited” packages; otherwise, $50/hour for singles, $50 for 90 minutes of doubles.
Waterville Valley Resort is also home to New England Tennis Holidays at Waterville, which offers 2-to-5-day tennis camps from Memorial Day to Columbus Day.
Off Court
Golf Courses: The resort has a 9-hole golf course, which winds around the valley floor; however guests also have privileges at the public Owl’s Nest Golf Course in Thornton, roughly a dozen miles away. Designed by Cornish, Silva & Mungeam, Inc., this 6,818-yard, par 72 championship course follows the natural topography of the Pemigewasset River and the White Mountain National Forest. It has five sets of tees on each hole, bentgrass fairways and manicured greens, which makes it accessible to golfers of any skill level.
Spa & Fitness Center: The Athletic Club has swimming pools, whirlpools, saunas, steam rooms, an indoor jogging track, and a selection of weights and cardiovascular equipment. Massages are also available.
Kayaks, pedal boats, and canoes are available for use on Corcoran’s Pond, there are mountain bike trails and a mountain-bike park, an ice-skating rink, hiking trails to the summits of the valley’s 4,000-foot peaks, and a gymnasium for basketball and indoor floor hockey.
Children's programs: Waterville runs a summer recreation camp for children ages 4 to 16. Activities vary by age, including some specifically for teens. The resort also operates a free valley-wide shuttle bus to make getting around easy.
Dining: There are half a dozen places to eat in Waterville, from delis and pizzerias to seafood and steaks in the Wild Coyote Grill at the Athletic Club
Accommodations
Rooms in Waterville Valley range from simple accommodations for 2 in a country inn to 3-bedroom condos capable of sleeping 6.
Getting there
Seasons: The outdoor tennis season runs from June through October, though play is possible indoors year-round.
Travel Instructions: The nearest airport is Manchester, NH, 70 miles to the south. Other options are: Boston, 130 miles; Montreal, 225 miles; and New York, 325 miles.
We took both a group clinic and private tennis lessons with pro Tom Gross at Waterville this past summer. After being away from the sport for some time, Tom had us hitting like pros again in no time at all. He is one of the best teachers we have ever had. Thank you Tom for getting us back in the groove!
MT
We had a wonderful experience at the Waterville Valley Resort the summer of 2018. Tennis lessons for the whole family in a picturesque setting. The instruction was quality and fun. We can’t wait to go back next summer for more!
MK
the view. the courts are special
AM
Very nice welcoming people in the office and to play with. Tennis social round robin is fun. Well maintained clay courts and often available. Love the community and great hiking, food, kids activities. My son enjoyed the day camp at the school and they arranged great lessons for my 10 year old who now loves the game.
MK
Enjoyed the beautiful amenities ,scenery and professional courteous staff.

We’ve been going up to see Tom for many years, this year we also put our grandchildren in the clinic. I had USTA sectionals coming up and went to have Tom help with my volleys as well as ground shots. It really helped to have his coaching in my head while I was there. So glad to have the opportunity.

My husband and I went to WV for a getaway weekend in August. We took morning tennis clinics with Tom, the Director of Tennis. He gave us excellent instruction focusing on a few very useful concepts for our 3.5 level skills, including my husband coming back from some injuries. He presented similar ideas to what other pros have taught us but expressed in slightly different ways that clicked with us. I look forward to truly incorporating these into my game. I would love to return in the future for a “refresher” and additional lessons. The red clay courts and the beautiful mountain backdrop were a treat. We were not there long enough for more games as we wanted to hike in the afternoon. There was a long list of people wanting to play on a board in the pro shop so we should have been able to find additional games. There were also daily round robins had we not done the clinics.
KG
I loved it there! The Pros were great, fun and good times here. I have been now 3 times, and I think it be a regular yearly event for me from now on. Tennis was very big part of my life and a young girl. I even began to teach in my 30’s due to the help of a tennis Pro from PBI tennis pros. The encouragement I got this past weekend Aug 17-19th in Waterville Valley, has me ready to keep on keeping on with my tennis and enjoy more weekends here and maybe other tennis resorts too!!

Tom is the best tennis instructor I have ever had. I hadn’t taken a lesson in many years. I was once pretty decent 20 years ago. Within two lessons, I started to see glimpses of an old self due to Tom’s ease and to the point instruction. I am a visual learner and the way he spoke allowed me to “see” what adjustments I needed. He’s awesome!
LC
The instructors are great teachers and were attentive to everyone’s individual needs and goals. The drills were excellent. The tennis courts and amenities are very good.
DH
A college buddy and I (we are now 5 yrs old) wanted to get in a couple days of advanced tennis instruction and chose Waterville Valley. It was fantastic. Tom is great. He has great, and easily digestible, advice. He also has a great set of drills to bake in concepts. We thoroughly enjoyed it.
TB
The tennis camp was great. The instructors did a fantastic job helping to improve my game. They did not try to change too much, but gave you plenty to work on moving forward.
AH
Great tennis academy with a very good pro! 18 courts surrounded by mountains, beautiful scenery and very friendly staff. Perfect place to spend time if you love playing tennis. Daily tennis clinics for adults and kids during summertime. Many good players in the club. Love it there…
OF
The best tennis instruction I’ve ever had. Really helped my game.
CD
Easy trip less than two hours from Boston. Beautiful valley at the end of the highway in the national forest. From the beautiful tennis courts you see mountains in all directions . I have improve my game so much through clinics and from social doubles on Wednesday afternoons. All of my four kids have taken lessons and have grown to love the sport. The pro shop has everything you need to play the game and it’s close to other amenities in the resort like the swimming pool which also has indoor courts. I was not a tennis player until I tried playing here and it’s so beautiful anyone will be converted .
JT
My wife and I are longtime visitors to WV and beginner tennis players. We decided to take lessons and play a little and really enjoyed it. The instruction was excellent and the courts and scenery are second to none. We also signed up our 5 year old for lessons and she had a great time as well. We look forward to returning in years to come!
JO
Tom Gross is an exceptional tennis coach who intensely committed to his students success. He has strong beliefs about the best ways to teach club level players and is a master at analyzing and teaching proper stroke technique.

An easy drive for a long weekend from Boston brought us to a beautiful and relaxing setting at Waterville Valley. This place is the opposite of pretentious, very friendly, casual, easy to use and gorgeous. Played in a tennis clinic each morning and hit a ton of balls. Great instruction from Tom. I am a solid player and dont need much help but in addition to getting the hitting in Tom gave me simple little tweaks that are very helpful. The courts are pristine, red clay – in great shape. The rest of the resort also has plenty to offer. Full service pool and athletic facility, multiple restaurants in the cute town square, walking trails, bike rentals and world class day hiking. There is plenty to do here. Love it and we will be back.
WG
Great way for a group of tennis friends to hone their skills, even if just for the weekend! Nice that they video your swing so you can actually see what you are doing. Coaches are knowledgeable, and nice to get a different view from lessons at home. Did not stay at the resort. Stayed at a friends condo nearby.

Love playing here

Just plain wonderful, from the ability to book a court to refreshments on the deck after a few sets…fantastic
MH
An abundant number of clay courts , perfectly maintained in a setting surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest. Professional coaching available , as well as pro shop. Indoor courts available at White Mountain Athlettic Club that also houses indoor-outdoor pools, fitness rooms, massage room. Waterville Valley has hiking and biking trails, lodging, a variety of restaurants, and is the home of Curious George.
RV
I love the sense of community at WV. There are a lot of the same folks each summer and it’s like catching up with old friends.
TB
The best Clay courts surrounded by the White Mountains. Everything is within walking distances from Restaurants , Hiking trails, swimming, biking and many other outdoor activities. Very family oriented Resort..

Having spent at least a week each summer since 1995 – I can say that WV is an idyllic place for families. There is so much to do and the Tennis Center is just perfect. Tom Gross runs a terrific operation.
SM
Amazing location – friendly but professional staff – great involving activities for people who want them and lots of available courts if you have your own group pre-set. resort has a family feel but the level of tennis instruction is outstanding
TK
The best the view is the best in the world

Very friendly staff. Beautiful setting. With courts kept in excellent shape. The teaching is top notch … the philosophy is to improve your game based on what you already do.
TC
Overall excellent resort. Beautiful setting, surrounded by mountains. Tom Gross, the head pro, is first class. Also, the 18 red clay courts are in terrific shape. Tennis as it is meant to be played.

great courts and pro

It was great! Tom was an excellent instructor…he was very throrough in explaining what he needed for me to do to obtain the level of strength that I have acheived

I live in CA and travel back to NH to visit my wife’s relatives once or twice a year. So I bring my rackets and look for new places to explore and play. This summer was outstanding when I found Tom Gross up at Waterville Valley. We were staying in the area for only a few days, but I managed to get two lessons in with Tom. I play 4.0-4.5 and I have a coach that I have been working with for 3+ years back here in the San Francisco bay area. I loved Tom’s “old school” approach to tennis and I wish I was there longer to work with him. He will push you as much as you want to be pushed- we had two very intense sessions with him and we figured out some little tweaks to my two hand backhand and we worked on a monster kick serve. I’ll be back next summer! Oh yea- absolutely beautiful setting up in the white mountains against the red clay courts….
LM
My family loves our vacation time together at Waterville Valley and have been spending time in July there for 41 years in a row! My parents, children and grandchildren come together. We are all on the tennis courts together and Tom and his staff have taught all of my children and grandchildren how to play! My children have been on tennis teams through highschool and college with his guidance and my older son still plays on a competetive men’s team at 37!!! Tom, Waterville and the clay courts are part of our families history!!! I would highly recommend it. It is a really special place.
WB
We love Waterville Valley Resort.Have been going for manny years with our family. The tennis pro has been there for manny years and is great and has made tennis a wonder fun sport for all of us. Manny fun things to do there besides tennis also.Would recommend it to anyone.
JS
The tennis facilities there are terrific and Tom Gross was an excellent instructor. I thought the drills that Tom did with us were challenging and very effective in helping to improve my tennis skills.
CS
The entire staff is amazing at really teaching you about tennis, not just having you repeat your mistakes. Lessons for the kids are always fun and you can’t beat that view.
MK
the view is beyond special courts are in great shape
MB
Waterville Valley has the best tennis facility I’ve ever been to. There are 18 clay courts, so getting court time isn’t an issue. The Pro is always on hand for a lesson for kids or adults. There are fantastic kids’ lessons, which allow the adults to play while keeping the kiddies busy. And – all of this while you look out onto the mountains around you in one of the most beautiful places on earth! After tennis, you can go boating, play a round of challenging golf, take the ski lift up with a mountain bike to ride down the mountain, hike, swim, or grab an icecream in the town square. This is an exceptional place to visit.
CL
Love WVV. Tom Gross is a great pro. Very nice red clay. Nice scenic escape to the white mountains coupled with a great tennis center.
BH
{New England Tennis Holidays Camp]. The courts are great, our two pros (ration was 6-2) were excellent. Strength was the quality of the teaching. I highly recommend this camp. Only weakness was the indoor “carpet” the day we had to go indoors.
DW
Excellent instruction, informative, encouraging and fun. Lovely setting, easy to drive to, very hospitable lodging offering a superior breakfast buffet. The restaurants serve too slowly for a good lunch experience, but the tennis program will find a fix for that. Go and Enjoy!
JB
Waterville has a great tennis program! The courts are wonderfully maintained and the staff is helpful and friendly. The instructors are no nonsense and able to hone in on your personal needs quickly. Love going there!
CS
The staff is super kind and the view from the courts couldn’t be better!
ES
True red clay courts in excellent condition. Frequent cloud bursts keep them moist and soft nestled in a mountain paradise. Nice people. No attitude. An educated, respectful community shows up for doubles every morning and the ITA they host every summer brings out top East Coast college players.
DV
A small quant town with an abundant amounts of activities for every age. The tennis center is placed on the valley floor surrounded by mountains. Priceless! I took a tennis lesson with Mr. Tom Gross at the outdoor tennis center late fall 2016. Tom was professional and very much a big help with improving by backhand. The young lady who worked at the pro-shop took excellent care of all of my families lesson scheduling . Thank you, we’ll be back for sure!!!
TS
The resort is situated in the middle of the white mountains with 360 degrees of wilderness surrounding you on magnificent clay courts. The cool mountain air keeps you refreshed even on the hottest summer day. In addition to the out side cours the balky also offers inside facilities at the athletic center also in the center of the town. The center of town is a pristine lake that offer a great place to take a dip or paddle a small boat around between games. The life’s in town are filled with happy and friendly employees and there are many place to grab great food to refill the tank after a long day of hit the ball. All of these amenities and great staff are one two hours north of Boston Logan airport and just over an hour north of Manchester international marketing it very convenient to get to. The only down side that I can find is that you can feel a bit isolated from the rest of the world. Great place, I could write so much more but I only have so much time. I would tell my friends to just check it out, I promise you won’t be disappointed.
SA
18 of the BEST clay courts with the most AMAZING views!

Great instruction from Tom Grosse, the best

The beauty of Waterville Valley is awe-inspiring. Yet more so, the staff made you feel as if you were their family.

Tennis pro was amazing. A born teacher. He was so helpful for me, somewhat of a beginner, and he changed my husband’s tennis serve. The tips he gave him really stuck. My husband still comments on how his serve has changed and how grateful he is to him. We will definitely be back. His enthusiasm for teaching hasn’t faded after all his years of teaching. He’s great. I rarely write recommendations but he’s worth writing about.
