Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the United States, and California has quietly become one of the most exciting states in the country to play it.
The luxury sports vacation has evolved. Travelers are no longer content to spend a week in a beach chair. They want mornings of competitive drills, afternoons of doubles, and evenings of farm-to-table dining with a mountain view.
Few states in America have cultivated such a storied, year-round tennis culture, and fewer still can claim a concentration of world-ranked resorts like the Palmetto State.

For the 487-room Westin La Paloma Resort & Spa, the Santa Catalina Mountains are not so much backyard as backdrop. The view from its terraced lobby looks north across a free-form swimming pool at a line of rugged desert peaks in the near distance. The rooms have been spread out through some two dozen stucco buildings painted a rosy hue. It’s thoroughly civilized though lucky guests occasionally come across bobcats playfully batting old tennis balls around the court as if they were house cats.

Getting there
Seasons: Although the resort is open year-round, the best period for tennis runs from late September into May.
Travel Instructions: Tucson claims to get 350 days of sunshine a year, more, says the Convention & Visitors Bureau, than any other city in the U.S. Expect high temperatures in the mid 60s in winter, in the upper 90s in summer. The rainiest months are July, August, and September.
Terrific staff, both knowledgeable and friendly. Great place for everyone from first timers to advanced players, and plenty of people to hit with or play doubles with. Indoor courts mean you can play when it’s raining out, and you can always practice w a high tech ball machine.
