Roughly 20 miles north of Phoenix, Arizona, the Carefree Highway slips away off Interstate 17 and runs due east toward the desert foothills. It ends at a hulking mound of 12-million-year-old granite rocks as haunting as the monuments of lost civilizations. It’s as if the Earth itself had heaved up a great dam against the urban sprawl that is rapidly devouring acre after acre of the Valley of the Sun.
Hidden behind those rocks is a 1,300-acre resort sensitively designed to preserve the raw power of the surrounding Sonoran Desert while cradling guests in uncommon comfort. Dubbed The Boulders, it takes the very shape and color of the rocks as an architectural model. The main lodge blends so well with the stones behind that from a distance it seems to be part of the landscape itself. So too do the 160 generously sized rooms, which have fireplaces, traditional viga ceilings, leather chairs, and private patios or balconies. Scattered below that pile of rocks, they occupy low, pueblo-like casitas the color of adobe and are thus themselves barely visible among the saguaro cactus, feathery palo verde trees, and the rest of a botanical garden of desert foliage. Rabbits, quail, and roadrunners scurry across paths and in and out of the foliage.
No less impressive are its two sterling golf courses—both the North Course & the South Course rank among the top 75 resort courses in the nation—and its tennis club and spa. There are natural trails and paths around the grounds including el Pedregal on the far side or to the top of the rock for sunset views across the Valley of the Sun.

We live in town but we go to Boulders for tennis lessons for the kids because Jheng is there! She is wonderful with our kids and gives very clear directions and what each child needs at the moment. She also helps with equipment selection and repair. Jheng also helped me to stop being a helicopter parent and the let the kids learn on their own paces. I highly recommend working with her – whether for short visits or like us, long term if you are around.
My boyfriend and I were visiting from NY for a wedding last week. We had the pleasure of having a couple of lessons with Jheng while we were there. She is Such an Awesome tennis instructor. At the end of our sessions, my boyfriend and I were finally hitting balls against each other. At first she’s is a little intimidating but she’s is actually very friendly and very caring. We’ve heard a lot from people that she is an outstanding instructor. We were very satisfied
Great tennis courts.
Jheng is a wonderful tennis instructor. I always learn something new. Her clinics are run very well and I get a great work out every time!
I had a wonderful experience with the tennis program at The Boulders Resort & Spa Scottsdale.
Jheng, the teaching pro is incredibly energetic and engaging. Her lessons keep you constantly moving, and she carefully observes each player to identify areas for improvement, offering precise and helpful advice. She is truly an outstanding coach.
Having played on many different courts around the world, I can confidently say that the Boulders is one of the most beautiful tennis resorts anywhere, it never gets old.
The facilities are also excellent too! Water, ice, and towels are always available, and the restrooms are clean, making it a very comfortable place to enjoy tennis.
We were so happy to be back at The Boulders seeing the new tennis courts and seeing Jheng still teaching there. She was always very pleasant and a great tennis instructor. My family love her happy attitude on the tennis courts. Boulders are very, very lucky to have her.
The grounds were slowly being maintained which is nice.
We are not impressed with the Spa. Slow service.
We got upgraded to a villa because the room they gave us has some issues.
Hopefully when we come back next year, our favorite tennis Pro Jheng will still be there!
Jane is an amazing tennis pro and an excellent instructor. She has been at The Boulders for many years and has a great following.
She is very professional and caring. She has many repeat guests who come back every year just to work with her. I highly recommend her.
We came back at The Boulders for Easter weekend. We were so glad Jheng was still there to give us lesson. Her drills were so full over the weekend that we could not get in. She created a third drill just to accommodate us and some other hotel guests. I believe the members were all taking her drills every week … amazing. She is such a phenomenal instructor. Her drills were all fun and very lively.
We love her great sense of humor.
The courts were newly resurface..it’s beautiful. The tennis shop also had a new face-lift, unfortunately its the same merchandise since last year. Not impressed with the buyer.
Our hotel room was still same old outdated room. Everything is so expensive.
We played golf, also not impressed with the
golf staff, not friendly at all. During Easter weekend, they renovated the resort pool so all hotel guest were all at the club pool. Not sure why renovate pool during busy season.
Grounds need more attention. Such a shame, The Boulders is such a beautiful property.
We will be back for more fun tennis with Jheng. We hope she stays, we believe she been at The Boulders for 26 years.
I just took a clinic with Jheng this morning. She is a wonderful instructor and keeps everything flowing. I had not played tennis in a while and it was a really fun morning. Courts 1-2 have just recently been refinished and look great. I highly recommend her clinics at The Boulders.
The Boulders Resort and Spa has a fun spirited tennis program lead by Jheng Wekow. In her 26 years at The Boulders guests return year after year because of her outstanding teaching, her energetic live ball drills and dynamic enthusiasm has made tennis fun for guests, members and members families visiting
throughout the year.
Boulders tennis courts have had a refresh with the addition of 2 new cushion courts recently being installed. So now 3 great courts in a row (1,2&3). Courts 4 and 5 have been patched and painted but there are still cracks. Have had numerous clinics with Jheng the female tennis pro there. She is enthusiastic, lively and fun! Be warned she will tell you what you are doing wrong! Which is how you learn to be better. The situation is idyllic in a boulder strewn desert landscape! Haven’t stayed at the resort for a number of years so can’t comment on the rooms.
I recently played tennis at The Boulders they have resurfaced the courts that were in need of it (courts 1 and 2) and they are beautiful! They are restored to like new.
THE BOULDERS recently resurfaced their tennis courts. They are second to none and absolutely stunning. Their lead pro, Jheng is amazing. She engages with guests and players. Friendly, knowledgeable and concerned. Love this facility. Will definitely return.
My husband company stayed at The Boulders this weekend and I had the opportunity to take the drills. Jheng was AMAZING! love her drills, very lively and I learned a lot. There was 3 other guests and I believe 2 members. They said it was unusual to have 5 but Jheng handle it beautifully.
Yesterday, we had PB clinic in the afternoon but not as great… it was just ok.
Unfortunately, PB courts and tennis courts were all cracked. Such ashame, a beautiful place with nice scenic views of the mountain and Boulders pile.. everything needs a face-lift.
Definitely will come back for Jhengs fun teaching.. She’s the best!!!
My husband and I stayed at The Boulders multiple times. We chose The Boulders because of the outstanding tennis program. The daily drills conducted by the female tennis pro was EXCEPTIONAL!!! She is full of life and energy. Her critics were so right on. We love her 💗💗💗💗 she also found us members to play with during our stay. We were very content.
Such a beautiful place to stay but rooms were outdated. Food in the restaurants are a little expensive.
My tennis experience is phenomenal. My husband and I had a semi private with Jheng last December and she was excellent. I came back last month to join her clinic and I had a blast with 3 other members.
Tennis is top notch here!!!!!
The Boulders is such a very unique place and has Spectacular surrounding, but no one has not been taking care of it. Luckily we stayed at a hacienda 522 very beautiful and very clean.
Tennis was our main reason why we went there. We scheduled lessons and drills for my husband and I. The lady in the shop scheduled our privates with the male Pro, and he was just
an okay instructor, we think he is good with beginners, then we had our drills/ clinic with the female Pro (Jheng). I must say she was such an amazing instructor, best ever. What a treat… her teaching helped us in so many ways with our game.
We my husband and I are coming back to see her again.
Sadly, the tennis courts and PB courts need help
I have been taking lessons from Jheng at The Boulders for years. She is an excellent tennis professional. She has taught me how to use my strokes to win. I drive 45 minutes from Phoenix every week for a lesson. Tennis courts 1 and 2 need help. Bits and pieces of the courts are coming off and the bottom of the fence is ragged. One time when I was there, a lady almost fell on one of the areas where the court is damaged.
Tennis clinics and lessons with Jheng was absolutely fabulous!!!! My 4 other friends came last April for 3 days of drills at The Boulers and Jheng gave us such a wonderful time. What a great experience!!! Yes we were exhausted but we have learned so much from her. The Boulders is super lucky to have her.
We hope when we come back next year, the courts will be all fix from chipping and cracks
Jheng is a fantastic tennis coach! My kids have been taking lessons with her for the past year and they are learning a ton – building a solid foundation, developing good habits, and learning how to “place” the ball to win the game. She is always upbeat and smiling! Highly recommend taking lessons with Jheng!
Best female tennis professional anyone could ask for! Jheng Wekow in her 25th year brings excellent teaching, high energy enthusiasm and sets an extremely high bar for tennis fashion. Jheng is simply the best teacher offering clinics and one on one mentoring to members and hotel guests. She makes being on the court fun for everyone!
A friend of mine came to The Boulders last year and told me that tennis at the Boulders was really good. So, I booked and stayed at The Boulders for 5 days and took clinic 4 days. I was really amazed and very impressed by the female instructor (Jhang) she was awesome and very knowledgeable and she will tell you directly what she thinks of your game. At first I was intimidated but then again I understand her point. I would have love to take her back to our club. The tennis shop was lacking tennis outfits. Not sure if the buyer is aware of what tennis outfits looks like??? The lady in the tennis shop doesn’t seem knowledgeable about tennis.
I took 1 pickleball lesson but I felt like the instructor doesn’t knows what he is talking about, AND he talks too much…I did not take a lesson to get a lecture
Lastly, the view from the tennis court is breathtaking. That is probably why people don’t pay attention to the tennis courts. The courts were all in bad conditions. They were all deteriorated, poorly maintained and unsafe.
I’ll come back ONLY for Jhang’s amazing teaching….
Tennis courts are not in a good condition–dirty, cracks are widening
A BEAUTIFUL place to play tennis in Carefree Arizona. Small and friendly, it’s the best!
This is a wonderful club. Good competition, but at the same time, everyone is SO welcoming. Great pros, who give individual players superb support. And beautiful grounds, courts and views that create an outstanding atmosphere / experience.
We are residents of The Boulders and very much enjoy playing pickleball. The staff – Jheng and Cris, are very welcoming and helpful. They respond immediately to request for scheduling, equipment and after we play always ask if we had fun and enjoyed ourselves. They are very accommodating and provide a fun atmosphere.
The pickleball staff of Jheng and Cris is exceptional. They are very welcoming, accommodating, energetic and helpful. Each time I see them they remember my name, ask if they can help me and smile! Great team!
The resort is in a beautiful setting with great weather, the cuisine is excellent and the tennis courts are very well maintained. The tennis pros are also top notch.
If you play tennis, the Boulders is the place to do it. Great facilities and a great staff.
Staff is the BEST…always friendly, helpful. Courts in great shape.
Great tennis pros who are fun and give very good instruction Highly recommend the tennis clinics
I am a senior tennis player who appreciates being able to play at a great facility against good competition, for my age. The tennis pros are very busy, teaching all levels, which includes critical instruction, as necessary. The club is very busy during winter months. We start very early in the summer. Love the club!
Boulders excels at tailoring programs to individual needs and levels. It is a good community member and supports local tennis as well as visiting guests
The setting of the Boulders Tennis Garden is beautiful. The teaching staff of Dale Light and Jeng is excellent. They are patient, have excellent personalities, make their lessons fun and know their tennis.
The Boulders tennis pro’s and staff provide personal attention to your game, training needs and enjoyment of the tennis experience. My thanks to all involved!!
first of all, who would have thought nor dream of this wonderful place will offer us a great lesson with a very energetic teacher who spoke French. We were not expecting this kind of surprise. We LOVE Jheng!!! She was awesome in so many ways. We will definitely come back just beacuse of her.
This is an absolutely beautiful tennis and golf resort with beautiful vistas and a most welcoming staff. They have 2 excellent teaching pros on staff and are happy to try and arrange a game for you at your level and will go out of their way to make your tennis experience one you won’t soon forget.
You can’t beat the weather in Phoenix during the winter months and The Boulders is a beautiful tennis destination. Dale Light is the total package. He can work with children, league teams and could coach a player on the tour. If you are serious about learning the game of tennis, he is not to be missed. His philosophy is simple: “Has your game improved over the years? If no, why not?” The tennis shop is small but has a surprising variety of choices. The staff goes out of their way in finding you a game and providing racket rentals. Jheng in particular has a fun personality and is very knowledgeable. They converted one of the eight courts to pickleball. While it is probably good for business and the right thing to do, us true tennis players can find the sound annoying. All in all, thumbs way up!
2 pros with different and interesting approaches to the game. One Zen like, the other tells it like it is. But both friendly, caring and will do what they can to provide a wonderful experience. Our favorite for years. Shhh!
I have gone to The Boulders with a group of 3.5/4.0 Level ladies 3 years in a row. We could not be happier with every aspect of the trip. The Boulders tennis staff tailors a program for us based on our requests. The pros (Dale and Jheng) are exceptional. They work together to help us become more well rounded tennis players both as teammates and individual players. They are extremely positive in their approach and are great at honing in on what will help each individual the most. In addition, the tennis facilities are excellent and the court setting is breathtaking. We enjoy delicious lunches at the spa in between our tennis sessions and relax in the hot tub before cleaning up for dinner. The whole experience is something we all look forward to each year. I cannot wait to go back!
The staff ar the resort is very friendly. The tennis pros are amazing and fun. Have gone three years in a row and can’t wait until next year.
This visit has become an annual tradition for my tennis team. Dale and Jhegn are outstanding tennis professionals. Dale focuses on the whole picture: balance, movement, feel and emotion all while giving technical advice to improve your game. We are a group of women that range in age from 30s to 70s. Dale and Jhegn can instruct for improvement at all ages and levels. The resort also takes care of every need: they shuttle us between the tennis center, hacienda, spa and restaurants. The spa has incredible services, facilities and shopping! We’ve also enjoyed eating at every resort restaurant and highly recommend The Spotted Donkey.
The Boulders is such a gem in the Arizona desert! The Tennis Director, Dale Light has done a fantastic job for the past 3 years with our annual ladies Tennis trip. Every year we come back with new lessons for on and off the court. It’s hard to put into words his positive impact to our very diverse group. The Assistant Director, Jane brings the perfect balance of energy to Dale’s Zen and pushes us all on the court to get to the next level. The Hacienda accommodations work great for our group, we also love the spa lunch, workouts/stretching classes and a trip to the spa . The countdown til next year starts as soon as we leave. Thanks to the Boulders for creating such amazing memories for this special group!
Fabuous setting, beautiful courts, very friendly and talented staff.
This is a beautiful Resort in a stunning desert setting. The courts are in fabulous shape and the staff is very friendly and accommodating. It is definitely worth planning a visit here!
The Boulders is the best place I have ever played tennis. I have played for over 40 years and recently moved to Scottsdale AZ near The Boulders. I was worried that I would not find the quality of a resort I was looking for but was soon relieved of that concern when I visited The Boulders. I was welcomed by Jheng and Dale, the two top-notch pros running the facility. They are extremely professional and excellent instructors of the sport. The courts themselves are perfect, beautifully maintained. There is plenty active players at all levels to keep everyone constantly involved, and lots of social activities to add to the competitive tennis. When you are here playing tennis, seeing the views surrounding the courts, the atmosphere makes you feel like this is tennis nirvana. Love it!
The courts here are maintained beautifully, the staff is friendly and the pros are outstanding. The tennis facility at the Boulders Resort (which includes a superb golf course and clubhouse as well) is located in an area full of giant natural boulders and desert landscaping in the town of Carefree, Arizona. A great experience!
Dale light provides a very pleasant place for scheduled or pick up tennis
