Originally from Orange County, California, where she played high school tennis, Hannsz went on to pursue degrees in Marketing and International Business, at the Fashion Institute of Design and Pepperdine University respectively. Originally her career took her to Los Angeles and then Oahu working in the film industry doing production, assisting directors, and taking on stunt work. She came back to tennis after moving to Austin, then joined Hanalei Bay in 2012 as head pro. Certified by the USPTA and in USTA Cardio, she offers a diverse roster of weekly activities, including clinics, Cardio tennis, and a variety of junior programs. She also runs a Sunday round-robin and organized doubles play another three days a week.
Court Complex: Their racquet facility has 4 artificial turf courts and 2 hard courts, which overlook the ocean, as well as 6 new pickleball courts.
Fees: None for guest of the resort; otherwise there are membership fees.

Mary Hannsz is the most dedicated instructor I have ever seen. Kash my son started under her wing at the age of 7. He now just turned 10 and playing with 12 – 15 year olds and hanging on strong because of Mary Hannsz. I myself coached a number of teams for my 2 other sons & daughter a number of years ago in baseball, soccer, roller hockey and basketball. Mary Hannsz is as good as it gets.
Highest recommendation. The stars align perfectly here. Amazing instruction and support from Mary and her team, one of a kind location! I can’t imagine a better place to play!
It would be hard to imagine a better tennis facility than the Hanalei Bay Club. There are different playing surfaces and an abundance of courts. Of course, the setting is unmatched over-looking Hanalei Bay and the Pacific Ocean. None of this is even close to the best asset of the club,Mary Hannsz, the pro at the club. We vacation at the Hanalei Bay Resort every other year. Our daughter, who is an avid tennis player and was all-conference in high school, takes lessons from Mary every time we go. Sierra is an experienced player but, in our couple of weeks, Mary diagnoses and works with Sierra to make clear improvements in her game by making small improvements that cause large results. We also watch the tennis events that are going on while we are there. Mary has clinics for youngsters that are obviously enormous fun for the kinds. There are group lessons from beginners who are trying out tennis for the first time to groups of experienced players and individual lessons. Everything is done by Mary with the utmost professionalism and with the utmost enjoyment for everyone playing. Tennis is a great sport that requires hard work and quality training to get better. It also is a sport that is great fun. The Hanalei Bay Club and Mary Hannsz provide the best of both.
I play at Hanalei Bay Resort every year and always look forward to Mary’s clinics. This year I also booked a private lesson. Mary is a fabulous pro. The lesson was well worth it and continues to pay off.
As noted in other reviews, rain is not a problem as the courts have a composite surface with sand so they continuously drain.

HBR was absolutely fabulous! I cannot imagine a more stunning setting and the instruction was top-notch! Mary was fantastic! My girls wish they could bring her home with them. We participated in both semi-private and group lessons; both were excellent. We are already looking forward to our next opportunity to play and take more lessons there. Highly recommend!
I come and play at HBR two months a year and it is a fabulous experience every time. Mary is a wonderful teacher and runs the club with total professionalism and warmth. The locals are welcoming and inclusive of all who want to join games. There is no more beautiful setting in the world to play tennis and you can even play in the rain on the well draining courts. My husband and I did a one off lesson with Mary and had a lot of fun getting some pointers on technique. Mary gave us each some personalized tips and we got in lots of reps in our hour together. We liked Mary’s emphasis on injury free tennis, and would highly recommend coming to do a lesson with her, regardless of how well or often you play tennis, as she adapts to skill level and has something to offer everyone!
I was fortunate enough to have Mary as a tennis instructor this summer. I had never played tennis before in my life and feel so incredibly lucky to have had her as a teacher. Although I have no reference as a player I am 100% sure she is the best! Her lessons are both fun and challenging and I loved the way she explained things to me in a thorough and approachable manner. On top of being a great teacher she is a wonderful person to boot!
