Originally from Orange County, California, where she played high school tennis, Hannsz went on to pursue degrees in Marketing and International Business, at the Fashion Institute of Design and Pepperdine University respectively. Originally her career took her to Los Angeles and then Oahu working in the film industry doing production, assisting directors, and taking on stunt work. She came back to tennis after moving to Austin, then joined Hanalei Bay in 2012 as head pro. Certified by the USPTA and in USTA Cardio, she offers a diverse roster of weekly activities, including clinics, Cardio tennis, and a variety of junior programs. She also runs a Sunday round-robin and organized doubles play another three days a week.
Court Complex: Their racquet facility has 4 artificial turf courts and 2 hard courts, which overlook the ocean, as well as 6 new pickleball courts.

My wife and I recently returned to Seattle from our annual two week visit to Princeville on the Island of Kauai. On this visit, we were determined to play more tennis than we usually do because our daughter, who played college tennis, would be staying with us for one of the weeks. We purchased a monthly family membership at the Hanalei Bay Resort Tennis Club for a total cost of only $150 dollars with unlimited tennis play for the three of us which includes unlimited pickleball. What a deal, especially considering that we weren’t staying at that resort. The courts were in excellent condition (2 hardcourt courts, 4 artificial grass sand courts, and 6 dedicated pickleball courts); and the views over Hanalei Bay to Bali Hai were spectacular. The quick drying, artificial sand grass courts were particularly nice considering the intermittent rain likely to accompany any vacation to Kauai. But perhaps the most impressive feature was the Club’s pro, Mary Hannsz. In addition to our regular tennis games, both my daughter and I took individual lessons from Mary and were so impressed by her knowledge, skill and ability to convey her recommendations to improve our games. Also, the Club made available daily tennis clinics at a reasonable cost; and, if requested, Mary would arrange matches with other comparably skilled Club members.
I visit my daughter twice a year in Princeville. I always look forward to Coach Mary’s Stroke of the Day. On Friday’s, we practice all the strokes to music. Mary provides the leadership, and routine instruction I appreciate. I am working on my footwork and improving my forehand stroke. Mary’s positivity generates participants that are glad to be working on their own individual game and return for more. Fun drill games keep us moving and alert. I come back each day because it is fun, and challenging. I come back because I have met so many supportive people on the courts over the past 5 years. I just took a private lesson today, and Mary was so patient and positive as she walked me through changing up my forehand. Intentional tennis is my new mantra! Thanks, Mary.

Mary directs a varied and quick drill so everyone gets to hit a lot of balls. Her focus on a specific technique each drill helps focus and refinement for all the players. Live play at the end of the drill gives a chance to implement her instructions. She is not only a talented professional, she’s incredibly pleasant!
I live 4 months of the year on Kauai and play tennis 2-3 times a week with Mary. She is very talented, kind, responsive, and has been a joy to play with. I am a member of other tennis clubs in Aspen and London and HBR program under Mary ranks as the best. I enjoy seeing local players frequently but an added bonus is meeting visitors from around the world.

Great facilities for tennis and pickleball in a beautiful resort with unparalleled views of Hanalei Bay. A truly stunning viewpoint to play tennis from. Very knowledgeable and friendly pros. They offer a variety of programming for adults and kids. Loved everything about it.
I have no doubt that this is THE most beautiful place in the world to play outdoor tennis. There are hard courts and synthetic courts, which are our favorites. Playing in the rain is NO problem on them since they drain so well and our joints never hurt after playing for hours everyday.
Mary, the pro, is one of the hardest workers we know. She runs daily clinics, does individual lessons, holds kids camps and several tournaments throughout the year.
She is one of the reasons we chose Kauai for our second home.

The Hanalei Bay Resort tennis courts are the most beautiful courts I have ever played in! The only downside to these courts is that the beautiful environs make it hard to focus on the game. I played 3 days out of the 5 days I was in Princeville and had a wonderful time. The coaches were a pleasure, the other guests and locals were supportive and positive, and it was a very welcoming community for those who want to play while traveling. I highly recommend the club and courts to all those staying in the area, and Mary was excellent in helping coordinate my clinics and sessions before and during my stay.
Mary is a wonderful instructor and the facility is top-notch. My wife and I had a group lesson and Mary was able to assess our different levels almost instantly. She also has a personality that just makes you wanna play more tennis! Top tier pickleball courts and excellent teaching staff. My husband and I had a wonderful clinic experience with Jay – very personalized and helpful. He quickly assessed our skills and was able to give us valuable feedback and drills that were spot on for improving our games – ways we can keep drilling with each other. Also, fun and personable time on the courts. We came back for open play and met some competitive and fun players with the HBR community.
I have attended the daily tennis clinics led by Mary Dang-Hannsz for over ten years when in Kauai and love-love-love them! They are fun and have improved my tennis game– great to meet fellow tennis players from all over! Mary is very observant of each player’s tennis strokes. All the instruction that she has provided is delivered in an easy to understand manner and make a difference. Mary has developed an all round racquet sports program suitable for all ages. I especially enjoyed her shot of the day class. She has a unique ability to communicate shot improvements that the student can visually understand. Not only that the class was so fun and a blast! I highly recommend her tennis program.

I have been taking lessons from Mary at Hanalei Bay resort for seven years now. Mary is the best instructor that I have had her methodology in teaching tennis exceeded my expectations. The first thing I do when I arrive for my vacation in Kauai is schedule my Tennis with Mary.

I learned so much in my first lesson that I decided to take another one the next day. Mary is patient, insightful and inspiring. I went home ready to dust off my racket and get back into the sport. We visit Hanalei Bay Resort from nearly every year! I really enjoy the facility because of the variety of playing surfaces. We love playing tennis and specifically chose the resort because of Mary and her fantastic tennis program. She brings the teaching skill-set, the patience, and frankly, the fun and Aloha spirit that bring us back year after year. I always play better when i get home from the skills i pick up at the clinics. I found Mary and her clinics after a google search of tennis facilities in Princeville and I am so glad I did! Her clinics are great fun and great exercise. She was also able to hook me up with other members of my level for some competitive matches. The courts are wonderful, rain or shine tennis and you cannot beat the setting.
Mary is beyond amazing! She has a very calm skilled way of teaching tennis, yet still so fun. She inspires my daughter and I to become life long tennis players as you see her love and commitment to the sport. Some of the most beautiful and picturesque courts in the world. Just playing in such an iconic location inspires you to elevate your game. Mary is a knowledgeable instructor who knows how to assess your game and break complex instructions down into simple and actionable steps that lead to improvements right then and there. She’s also welcoming and wants you to enjoy tennis as much as she does. She’ll always make time for a quick chat, or even shoot me a text if someone is down a doubles partner. Whenever I visit HBR I feel like I’m one of the gang.

The facilities at Hanalei Bay Resort are terrific and Mary creates a fun and welcoming environement. I always get great tips to improve my game and she has amazing patience for the less good players like myself. Not only do I learn but it is enjoyable and one of the main reasons we visit every year. Not only does she provide 1:1 coaching but she facilitates group and kids sessions and there is always somethng going on. I’ve learned to book erly as she has a busy schedule! The addition of pickleball is an added plus for the entire family and those that prefer it over tennis.
